Kurebito, Megumi. Koryak. Edited by Michael Fortescue, Marianne Mithun, and Nicholas Evans. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199683208.013.46.

Abstract:
The present chapter focuses on verbal polysynthesis in Koryak, a member of the Chukotko-Kamchatkan language family and aims to show how a polysynthetic holophrase is formed in this language. The result of the examination reveals that the language owes the major driving force in promoting verbal polysynthesis to incorporation, especially noun incorporation (NI). In NI, polysynthetic incorporative stems are derived through NP incorporation, multiple nominal incorporation, double P-argument incorporation (though not always accepted), and adverbial incorporation. Denominal verbal affixes which express concrete verbal meanings such as ‘make’, ‘go gathering’, and ‘look for’ can also derive polysynthetic holophrases by (quasi)-incorporating one or more modifiers and adverbial stems. The polysynthetic stem thus formed is enclosed and shaped into a polysynthetic holophrase by verbal inflectional categories such as aspect, mood, and agreement in person and number with the core argument.

Abstract:
Each Concentrate revision guide is packed with essential information, key cases, revision tips, exam Q&As, and more. Concentrates show you what to expect in a law exam, what examiners are looking for, and how to achieve extra marks. This chapter discusses the process of incorporation and the advantages and disadvantages of conducting business through a company. The three principal methods by which a company can be incorporated are: incorporation by Act of Parliament, incorporation by Royal Charter, and incorporation by registration. The advantages of incorporation include perpetual succession, asset ownership, and the ability to commence legal proceedings. The disadvantages of incorporation include increased formality, regulation, publicity, and civil liability.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the competition by states for incorporations. More specifically, it examines three scholarly debates over state competition for incorporations: the “directional” debate, centered around the question of whether firms, if given a choice, will opt for corporate law rules that maximize shareholder value, corporate rules that maximize managerial benefits, something in between, or something else entirely; the “competition” debate, which is concerned with whether, how, and which states compete for incorporations; the “federalism” debate, which deals with the desirability of federal corporate law as an alternative to the present regime, where many corporate law rules are determined by the law of the firm’s state of incorporation. It also analyzes the empirical evidence in relation to all three debates.

Abstract:
In the large body of literature on ecological and evolutionary mechanisms underlying transitions between planktotrophy and lecithotrophy, the focus has typically covered long evolutionary timescales; that is, evolution of complex larval traits is generally discussed in the context of phylogenetic patterns detectable at the level of families, classes, or phyla. An analytical approach incorporating comparative phylogenetics is increasingly used to address these long-view questions. Here, we discuss what has been learned from taking a comparative phylogenetic approach and the limitations of this approach. We propose that approaches based on a closer view—that is, analyses that focus on genetic, morphological, and functional variation among individuals, populations, or closely related congeners—have greater potential to answer questions about mechanisms underlying the loss and regain of major complex characters such as feeding larvae.

Wetzels, Leo, and Stella Telles. Polysynthesis in Lakondê, a Northern Nambikwaran Language of Brazil. Edited by Michael Fortescue, Marianne Mithun, and Nicholas Evans. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199683208.013.42.

Abstract:
Lakondê, together with Mamaindê and Latundê, belongs to the Northern Nambikwara branch of the Nambikwara linguistic family spoken in Northwestern Brazil. The language is head-marking, predominantly suffixal, and of great derivational productivity. It has an elaborate system of nominal classifiers; it is incorporating, with nuclear arguments integrated in the morphology of the verb. Lakondê has two ways of incorporating nouns: one is prefixal when the incorporated morphemes represent body parts; the other is suffixal, involving nominal classifiers. When the incorporation occurs in dynamic verbs, the integrated classifier morphemes assume the role of direct object. The verbal template provides for more than thirty morpheme positions, which, from the point of view of their function, can be categorized as argumental, adverbial, evidential, and TAM. Flexional suffixes may function as nuclear arguments and dispense with the lexical realization of the subject and the object. With these characteristics Lakondê may be classified as a typical polysynthetic language.
