The heterocyclic indole structure has been shown to be one of the most promising scaffolds, offering various medicinal advantages from its wide range of biological activity. Nonetheless, the significance of 3-oxindole has been less known. In this study, a series of novel 3-oxindole-2-carboxylates were synthesized and their antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infection was evaluated. Among these, methyl (E)-2-(3-chloroallyl)-4,6-dimethyl-one (6f) exhibited the most potent inhibitory effect on HIV-1 infection, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.4578 μM but without severe cytotoxicity (selectivity index (SI) = 111.37). The inhibitory effect of these compounds on HIV-1 infection was concordant with their inhibitory effect on the viral replication cycle. Mode-of-action studies have shown that these prominent derivatives specifically inhibited the Tat-mediated viral transcription on the HIV-1 LTR promoter instead of reverse transcription or integration. Overall, our findings indicate that 3-oxindole derivatives could be useful as a potent scaffold for the development of a new class of anti-HIV-1 agents.

This study examined how electronic tax system (E- tax system) reduces tax evasion in Nigeria. The survey sample was drawn from Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) staff and small and medium-scale enterprise taxpayers registered in F.C.T., Abuja, Nigeria. Primary data was derived from a questionnaire administered to a population of 60 officials and employees of the FIRS and taxpayers at a small and medium-scale enterprise registered in F.C.T., Abuja, Nigeria. The secondary data used was extracted from the tax revenue collection report on the FIRS platform for 2000–2019 (20 years). The conclusive research design was used. General linear model and linear regression were used to analyze the data collected. The E-tax system was measured using actual tax revenues and the level of electronic tax services. In contrast, tax evasion was measured using tax compliance and mind-set of taxpayers towards E-tax system. Taxpayers’ attitudes towards E-tax system, actual tax revenue, tax compliance and the level of electronic tax services were used as mediating and control variables; thus, results established a significant relationship, and this relationship is an adverse one. The work shows that an effective electronic tax system will significantly reduce tax evasion. Therefore, the proper implementation of the electronic tax system helps mitigate the problem of tax evasion that causes economic and social detriments in the tax administration system.

Tujuan yang ingin dicapai dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji bagaimanakah penerapan pembelajaran kooperatif tipe TAI (Team Assisted Individualization), mengetahui keaktifan siswa dan mengetahui presentase ketuntasan belajar siswa pada materi sistem persamaan linier dua variabel siswa kelas X SMK Negeri 3 Probolinggo Tahun Pelajaran 2018/2019.
Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif. Jenis penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK).
Kesimpulan yang dapat diambil dalam penelitian ini Penerapan pembelajaran kooperatif Teams Asssisted Individualization (TAI) dengan Authentic Assesment membuat siswa menjadi aktif dalam proses pembelajaran. Hal ini dapat ditunjukkan pada hasil analisis data observasi siswa. Persentase aktivitas siswa untuk mental activities, writing activities, oral activities, visual activities, listening activities, dan tidak aktif pada siklus I masing-masing sebesar 33,1%, 36,65%, 33,27%, 31,58%, 25,16%, dan 20,27% pada siklus II sebesar 37,83%, 40,54%, 36,14%, 34,45%, 28,37%, 19,42%. Pada aktivitas kegiatan kelompok persentase keaktifan untuk oral activities, visual activities dan tidak aktif untuk siklus I masing-masing sebesar 48,43%, 42,96%, 23,43% sedangkan pada siklus II sebesar 53,9%, 46,87%, 17,18%. Persentase ketuntasan belajar secara klasikal setelah penerapan model pembelajaran TAI dengan Authentic Assessment pada materi system persamaan linier dua variable siswa kelas X sebesar 91,89% untuk siklus I dan 94,59% untuk siklus II.

ABSTRACT Proteins that are produced for commercial purposes in Bacillus subtilis are commonly secreted via the Sec pathway. Despite its high secretion capacity, the secretion of heterologous proteins via the Sec pathway is often unsuccessful. Alternative secretion routes, like the Tat pathway, are therefore of interest. Two parallel Tat pathways with distinct specificities have previously been discovered in B. subtilis. To explore the application potential of these Tat pathways, several commercially relevant or heterologous model proteins were fused to the signal peptides of the known B. subtilis Tat substrates YwbN and PhoD. Remarkably, the YwbN signal peptide directed secretion of active subtilisin, a typical Sec substrate, via the B. subtilis TatAyCy route. In contrast, the same signal peptide directed Tat-independent secretion of the Bacillus licheniformis α-amylase (AmyL). Moreover, the YwbN signal peptide directed secretion of SufI, an Escherichia coli Tat substrate, in a Tat-independent manner, most likely via Sec. Our results suggest that cytoplasmic protein folding prior to translocation is probably a major determinant of Tat-dependent protein secretion in B. subtilis, as is the case with E. coli. We conclude that future applications for the Tat system of B. subtilis will most likely involve commercially interesting proteins that are Sec incompatible.

Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mendapatkan bukti empiris terkait actual usage dari penggunaan e-learning dengan pemediasi intention to use. Data dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 135 kuesioner yang disebarkan kepada mahasiswa Universitas Airlangga yang sempat memanfaatkan AULA. AULA merupakan portal e-Learning di Universitas Airlangga, yang merupakan singkatan dari Airlangga Univeristy e-Learning Application. Alat uji yang digunakan adalah Warp PLS. Perceived usefulness yang dirasakan pada penggunaan e-learning tidak memberikan pengaruh pada actual usage. Perceived ease of use memiliki hubungan signifikan pada intention to use. Hasil pengujian pengaruh tidak langsung menunjukkan perceived usefulness mempengaruhi niat perilaku untuk menggunakan teknologi. This study will suggest public services, particularly town organizations required by the local area in East Kotawaringin during the Covid 19 pandemic. Information examination was done in this concentrate on utilizing the Partial Least Square (PLS) strategy utilizing WarpPLS programming form 7. A complete mathematical model for measuring the parameters of the scattering matrix for a measurement object [Sx] in the form of a four-port network is developed, in which the mathematical model of the eight-port error is described by 16 parameters of the scattering matrix [E]. In addition, in comparison with the 12-parameter model of the eight-port error network, four parameters are included, which allow taking into account leaks, parasitic transmissions of microwave modules under study (microwave microassemblies). Due to the use of matrix analysis methods, the equations in matrix form are obtained that connect the matrices of the measurement object [Sи] and the actual values of the matrix parameters [Sx], with the aim of enabling the solution of these equations instead of the scattering matrix [E] to use a transmition matrix [T] in the form of cellular matrices [Taa], [Tab], [Tba], [Tbb].

The processes of the global economic crisis and its effects affecting the whole life of the State, including the tax system, require examination of their influence on changes in tax culture. To justify the importance of tax culture research, analysis of links between taxes and culture and the tax system from philosophical, social-cultural and theological aspects are presented in the dissertation. The dissertation presents the systematic analysis of the conception and preconditions for formation of the tax culture, specifies conception of the tax culture, and identifies factors affecting the tax culture. Assumptions concerning assessment of tax culture have been validated by assessing how factors determining the tax culture are reflected in macroeconomic indicators, by means of taxpayer opinion survey for specification of the conception of tax culture and for determination of the key factors determining it. The four stages are included into the systematic Tax Culture Assessment Model, which encompasses specification and systematization of factors affecting the tax culture, identification of the most important factors, selection and justification of the indicators reflecting those factors, development and validation of the mathematical model for assessment of the tax culture, and substantiation of universality of the Tax Culture Assessment Model. E-tax is an important function of e-government since it is highly related to the life of citizens (Wu & Chen, 2005). So in this paper I have discussed the factors influence the citizen adoption of government e-tax service. I have used the decomposed TPB model as my research model. This model integrated two important theories – TAM model and TPB model. The taxpayers were divided into adopters who have used the e-tax service and non-adopter who has used the conventional method to pay their tax. And the effect of these factors for adopters and non-adopters are different. Therefore, understand the factors’ effect can help governments formulate the corresponding measures to promote more citizens to use the e-tax service and lead to better planning and implementation of e-tax service.

A survey conducted by the United Nations in 2016 endorses this fact, showing a high rate of technological development with respect to e-government. However, the same publication showed the low rate of citizen participation about it. These results show how, although there are many government technological services, these do not focus on the citizen or in their active participation, but mainly on technological development. In the present study, an adoption model is proposed, extending the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) incorporating public value, specifically environmental sustainability, as an external variable. The validation of the proposal was made through a validated survey with experts in the environmental field and applied to citizens of the Peruvian capital. Our results show that environmental sustainability is a factor that positively affects the adoption of e-government in Peru and that should be considered by the authorities as an enhancer of citizen participation about it.

[EN] In medicine, the diagnosis based on computed tomography (CT) imaging is fundamental for the detection of abnormal tissues by different attenuation values on X-ray energy, which frequently are not clearly distinguished for the radiologist. Different methods have been developed to reconstruct images. In this work we analyse and compare analytical and iterative methods to resolve the reconstruction problem.
Today, in practice, the reconstruction process is based on analytical methods and one of the most widely used algorithms is known as Filtered back projections (FBP) algorithm. This algorithm implements the inverse Radon Transform, which is a mathematical tool used in Biomedical Engineering for the reconstruction of CT images.
From the very beginning of the development of scanners, it was important to reduce the scanning time, to improve the quality of images and to reduce the reconstruction time of images. Today's technology provides powerful systems, multiprocessor and multicore processor systems, that provide the possibility to reduce the reconstruction time.
In this work, we analyze the FBP based on the inverse Radon Transform and its relation to the Fourier Transform, with the aim to achieve better performance while using resources of a system in an optimal way. This algorithm uses parallel projections, is simple, robust, and the results could be extended for a variety of situations.
In many applications, the set of projection data needed for the reconstruction, is incomplete due to the physical reasons. Consequently, it is possible to achieve only approximated reconstruction. In this conditions, the images reconstructed with analytical methods have a lot of artefacts in two and three dimensions.
Iterative methods are more suitable for the reconstruction from a limited number of projections in noisy conditions. Their usage may be important for the functionality of portable scanners in emergency situations. However, in practice, these methods are less used due to their high computational cost. In this work, the reduction of the execution time is achieved by performing the parallel implementation on multi-core and many-core systems of such iterative algorithms as SART, MLEM and LSQR.
The iterative methods have become a hot topic of interest because of their capacity to resolve the reconstruction problem from a limited number of projections. This allows the possibility to reduce the radiation dose during the data acquisition process. At the same time, in the reconstructed images appear undesired artefacts.
To resolve the problem effectively, we have adopted the LSQR method with soft threshold filtering technique and the fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm for computed tomography imaging and present the efficiency of the method named LSQR-STF-FISTA.
The reconstruction methods are analysed through the reconstructions from simulated and real projection data. Also, the quality of the reconstructed images is compared with the aim of drawing conclusions regarding the studied methods.
We conclude from this study that iterative methods are capable to reconstruct images from a limited number of dataset at a low computational cost.[ES] En medicina, el diagnóstico basado en imágenes de tomografía axial computerizada (TAC) es fundamental para la determinación de anormalidades a través de diferentes valores de atenuación de la energía de rayos-X, las cuales, frecuentemente, son difíciles de ser distinguidas por los radiólogos. Se han desarrollado diferentes técnicas de reconstrucción de imagen. En este trabajo analizamos y comparamos métodos analíticos e iterativos para resolver de forma eficiente el problema de reconstrucción. Hoy, en la práctica, el proceso de reconstrucción de imagen se basa en algoritmos analíticos entre los cuales, el algoritmo de retroproyección filtrada 'filtered backprojection' (FBP) es el más conocido. Este algoritmo se usa para implementar la Transformada de Radon inversa que es una herramienta matemática cuya utilización principal en Ingeniería Biomédica es la reconstrucción de imágenes TAC. Desde el comienzo del desarrollo de escáneres ha sido importante reducir el tiempo de escaneo, mejorar la calidad de imagen y reducir el tiempo de reconstrucción. La tecnología de hoy ofrece potentes sistemas con varios procesadores y núcleos que posibilitan reducir el tiempo invertido en la reconstrucción de imágenes. En este trabajo se analiza el algoritmo FBP basado en la Transformada de Radon inversa y su relación con la Transformada de Fourier con el objetivo de optimizar su cálculo aprovechando al máximo los recursos del sistema. Este algoritmo se basa en proyecciones paralelas y se destaca por su simplicidad y robustez, y permite extender los resultados a una variedad de situaciones. En muchas aplicaciones el conjunto de proyecciones necesarias para la reconstrucción puede ser incompleto por razones físicas. Entonces, la única posibilidad es realizar una reconstrucción aproximada. En estas condiciones, las imágenes reconstruidas por los algoritmos analíticos en dos o tres dimensiones son de baja calidad y con muchos artefactos. Los métodos iterativos son más adecuados para la reconstrucción de imágenes cuando se dispone de un menor número de proyecciones en condiciones más ruidosas. Su uso puede ser importante para el funcionamiento en escáneres portátiles en condiciones de urgencia en cualquier lugar. Sin embargo, en la práctica, estos métodos son menos usados por su alto coste computacional. En este trabajo presentamos el estudio y diversas implementaciones paralelas que permiten bajar el coste computacional de tales métodos iterativos como SART, MLEM y LSQR. Los métodos iterativos se han convertido en un tópico de gran interés para muchos vendedores de sistemas de TAC clínicos por su capacidad de resolver el problema de reconstrucción con un número limitado de proyecciones. Esto proporciona la posibilidad de reducir la dosis radiactiva en los pacientes durante el proceso de adquisición de datos. Al mismo tiempo, en la reconstrucción aparecen artefactos no deseados. Para resolver el problema en forma efectiva y eficiente, hemos adaptado el método LSQR con el método de filtrado 'Soft Threshold Filtering' y el algoritmo de aceleración 'Fast Iterative Shrinkage-thresholding Algorithm' para TAC. La eficiencia y fiabilidad del método nombrado LSQR-STF-FISTA se presenta en este trabajo. Los métodos de reconstrucción de imágenes se analizan mediante la reconstrucción a partir de proyecciones simuladas y reales, comparando la calidad de imagen reconstruida con el objetivo de obtener conclusiones respecto a los métodos usados. Basándose en este estudio, concluimos que los métodos iterativos son capaces de reconstruir imágenes con el conjunto limitado de proyecciones con un bajo coste computacional.
[CAT] En medicina, el diagnòstic basat en imatges de tomografia axial compueritzada (TAC) és fonamental per a la determinació d'anormalitats a través de diferents valors d'atenuació de l'energia de rajos-X, les quals, freqüentment,són difícils de ser distingides pels radiòlegs. S'han desenvolupat diferents tècniques de reconstrucció d'imatge. En aquest treball analitzem i comparem mètodes analítics i iteratius per a resoldre el problema de reconstrucció. Avui, en la pràctica, el procés de reconstrucció d'imatge es basa en algorismes analítics entre els quals, l'algorisme de retroproyección filtrada 'filtered backprojection' (FBP) és el més conegut. Aquest algorisme s'usa per a implementar la Transformada de Radon inversa que és una eina matemàtica la utilització principal de la qual en Enginyeria Biomèdica és la reconstrucció d'imatges TAC. Des del començament del desenvolupament dels lectors òptics ha sigut important reduir el temps d'escanege, millorar la qualitat d'imatge i reduir el temps de reconstrucció. La tecnologia d'avui ofereix potents sistemes amb diversos processadors i nuclis que possibiliten reduir el temps invertit en la reconstrucció d'imatges. En aquest treball s'analitza l'algorisme FBP basat en la Transformada de Radon inversa i la seua relació amb la Transformada de Fourier amb l'objectiu d'optimitzar el seu càlcul aprofitant al màxim els recursos del sistema. Aquest algorisme es basa en projeccions paral·leles i es destaca per la seua simplicitat i robustesa, i permet estendre els resultats a una varietat de situacions. En moltes aplicacions el conjunt de projeccions necessàries per a la reconstrucció pot ser incomplet per raons físiques. Llavors, l'única possibilitat és realitzar una reconstrucció aproximada. En aquestes condicions, les imatges reconstruïdes pels algorismes analítics en dues o tres dimensions són de baixa qualitat i amb molts artefactes. Els mètodes iteratius són més adequats per a la reconstrucció d'imatges quan es disposa d'un menor nombre de projeccions en condicions més sorolloses. El seu ús pot ser important per al funcionament en escáneres portàtils en condicions d'urgència en qualsevol lloc. No obstant açò, en la pràctica, aquests mètodes són menys usats pel seu alt cost computacional. En aquest treball presentem l'estudi i diverses implementacions paral·leles que permeten baixar el cost computacional de tals mètodes iteratius com SART, MLEM i LSQR. Els mètodes iteratius s'han convertit en un tòpic de gran interès per a molts venedors de sistemes de TAC clínics per la seua capacitat de resoldre el problema de reconstrucció amb un nombre limitat de projeccions. Açò proporciona la possibilitat de reduir la dosi radioactiva en els pacients durant el procés d'adquisició de dades. Al mateix temps, en la reconstrucció apareixen artefactes no desitjats. "As the delivery of healthcare has become more sophisticated, scientific, and complex, the need for HIM (Health Information Management) professionals at all levels has increased, and the role and status of those managing these functions has increased accordingly." (AHIMA, September 24, 2007). Studies by the Institute of Medicine and others have found suboptimal technology use throughout the healthcare industry. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) developed the e-HIM Virtual Lab (V-lab) to train students in the use of new technology applications in response to IOM findings. Faculty are the gatekeepers for use of instructional technology in educational settings. Many disciplines have evaluated instructional technology use by students. There are very few studies on faculty use of instructional technology. There are no published studies of the determinant factors influencing health information management (HIM) faculty use of instructional technology. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the faculty's attitude and behavior toward the use of the V-lab instructional technology. A non-random one group pretest posttest design was used to test the hypothetical Instructional Perception -Technology Acceptance Model (IP- TAM) for faculty perceptions regarding system functionality, usability and technology acceptance. The Path Analysis determined the strongest construct indicators for intent to use the V-lab were Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease Of Use (PEOU), System Functionality and Usability (SFU). These findings support the recommendation for a collaborative examination of the existing V-lab systems to improve utilization and success.Ph.D.

Purpose: Low citizen adoption rates jeopardize the success and proliferation of e-government systems. This study aims to understand how the perception of environmental sustainability (ES) can influence a citizen’s intention to use e-government systems. Design/methodology/approach: In a case study in Peru, the technology acceptance model (TAM) adoption model is extended with the construct of ES and evaluated with structural equation modeling. An 18-element, in-person survey was constructed and administered to citizens of Lima, Peru who had prior exposure to e-government systems. Findings: The results show that citizens can be positively influenced to adopt e-government systems if they perceive that doing so will contribute to ES. Research limitations/implications: As this was a preliminary study, further research should focus on specific, as opposed to general, e-government systems, as well as encompassing a broader cross section of the population. Practical implications: Administrators of e-government initiatives can consider public-interest factors, alongside of the common self-interest factors, when looking to improve adoption rates of e-government systems. Originality/value: This is the first time that TAM has been extended with the construct of ES.

The final work of master studies reviews various industrial robots constructions and parameters, from which they are characterized. Robotics systems and control of flexible production have been discussed in here. Various robots’ drives and their control advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. In the practical part original robot global movement platform is suggested and algorithm of two flexible production bays handling is created. Static characteristics of linear drive used in platform are calculated. Using software package “Matlab Simulink” model of symmetrical linear induction motor (LIM) is created and dynamic characteristics are gained. Concluding part presents inferences and suggestions.

Linear induction motors are applied in equipments with different requirements set up to the controlled motion parameters. Investigation of motoring and breaking modes remains the relevant problem nowadays. The scientific novelty is based on analysis of non-symmetrical operation modes of linear induction motor at supplying it by a voltage source, developing a generalized model of motoring and breaking dynamic modes and analyzing influence of linear motor windings connection way and control parameters on dynamic breaking characteristics. The coordinate transformations of linear induction motors dynamic models, based on rotational motor with assumptions valid for low speed motor and multi-pole motor, are considered. Mathematical and computer models to investigate symmetrical dynamic modes of linear induction drives are presented. Generalized model to investigate non-symmetrical dynamics modes is elaborated. The results of simulation are presented by dependences on the main variables in the time domain, and dependences on both constructional and control parameters that give possibility to optimize constructional parameters of motors.

In the last few years, many researchers have highlighted the economic and cultural impact that crafts have on the development of territories, enhancing local identities and traditions. Various researches also point to the close relationship between trade (sometimes called ‘neighbourhood’ trade), crafts and historic centres, in terms of quality of life, and socio-economic and identity development of territories, showing their new centrality to processes of urban development and regeneration and the formation of social capital. It is evident how enterprise contributes to local development through social interactions based on negotiated and open collaborations between microenterprises, community and network. It was well argued how small business (commerce, crafts and neighbourhood stores) has always played an important role as a social garrison in sparsely populated areas, allowing cities and particularly urban centres to become more lively or livable, being able to give or take away quality from the city and the territory, attributing peculiarity, security and specificity to places or trivialising them in a homogenised landscape. Among the services of social utility recognised to the artisan workshop are: the guarantee of services useful to the livability of the place, the garrisoning of territories and the development of social relations, the promotion of local identity and its know-how, and the creation of employment opportunities through modest initial availability of capital. At the same time, the worsening recessionary dynamics that have occurred in the global economy over the past two decades and the disruptive digital transition have exposed such enterprises to increasing difficulties, disruptively accentuating the decline in competitiveness and propensity to innovate of a large proportion of craft SMEs, of which the socioeconomic literature does not see significant adaptations to the changed environment, such as reconfiguring the business model, adopting a totally new strategic plan adapting to the digital transition, generational transition, and adopting innovative organisational or system behaviours. This volume presents the Venice Original E-Commerce case – a project carried out by the Venice Metropolitan CNA thanks to the support of J.P. Morgan, the support of the Venice Rovigo Chamber of Commerce and the sponsorship of the City of Venice and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice – as a reference project intervention to focus on a possible model of intervention to support culturally-valued artisan micro-enterprises, intervening on the process of strategic renewal and the conditions to foster generational turnover, understood as an opportunity to fill the gap on the digitisation of the artisan sector.

Evidence of this, now as in the past, are the serried ranks of poets who for centuries have sung its praises and raised it to the rank of myth. This brief anthology proposes only a few of them, among the most renowned of recent generations. In a truly original way these poets have managed to convey to the hearts and minds of their compatriots their own stunned vision of the city, illustrating emotions that cannot fail to move even the Florentines and, in a broader sense, we Italians as a whole. Thus what is offered in these pages, in fine Italian translation, is this mesh of voices, an intimate and enthralling polyphony of city, poet and reader, unfurling in an evocative melody and proposing the legend of Florence in a new light – possibly more authentic and illuminating.

This is, therefore, a new and interdisciplinary theme of research that highlights the technical and theoretical complexity that e-learning specialists and scholars of multimodal communication and emotions address in order to devise new systems of human-computer communication that are more natural and more motivating for learning.

This study explores the idea of a significant business, framing it through the key concepts that define it and illustrating it through a case study that narrates the evolution of a century-old company. Born as an intellectual response to the economic and financial crisis of 2008, the significant business is conceived as an entity capable of enduring over time through the creation of value and its distribution within the community in which it operates. The significant business should be also aware of its own identity and of the need to innovate itself over time considering the synergies and the collaborations that the territory offers, to continue to create wealth. This contribution is part of a series of works that, resulting from numerous action-research projects coordinated by Professor Carlo Bagnoli, have seen as protagonists the companies and their strategic innovation. The starting point of many of these projects is the Manifesto of the Significant Company (Bagnoli et al. 2015), which aims at imagining a business model able to explore and innovate the company to increase its competitiveness, and also to restore meaning to the company itself, through the definition of its own identity. Contributing to previous works, this book explores the idea of significant enterprise by adopting a business and a historical perspective. The first part of the book deals with the business perspective, to introduce the value model commonly used in action research studies undertaken by the spin-off Strategy Innovation of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and to describe the specific model of a significant business. The second part of the book narrates the story of a centuries-long business, Barovier&Toso, exploring its evolutions. Focusing on the different perspectives that shaped the key concepts and narrating the path followed by a centenary company, this work hopes to shed further light on this fascinating theme together with the reader.

Several decades after the major studies that opened the road to these strands of research in Italy too (Ariès, Tenenti), this book offers a series of penetrating and suggestive explorations of a fascinating and complex theme which no reader can consider extraneous.

The essay analyses the changes in labour law by examining working places’ modifications induced by the most meaningful driver: technology. In this perspective, the authors point out three macro scenarios. The first relates to industry 4.0 and to the notion of “cognitive enterprise”. This could, or should, act as a magnet model considering its social and organizational positive consequences. The second is the traditional work organization re-considered in the light of new technologies’ impact; it generates a kind of neo digital Fordism, as does the Amazon model in the logistic sector. The third scenario is linked to the rise of the gig economic, with its “workers on tap” (i.e. the platform economy with the algorithm as a boss). These different scenarios, even if characterised by blurred borders, imply the need to think of Labour law differently than in the past. Beyond its traditional protective function, there should be a promotional one, aimed at developing capabilities and positive liberties of the person in the workplace. In the face of this three-fold dimension of the workplaces and of the expansion of Labour law functions, it is also necessary to rethink its techniques and principles. In that sense, the authors propose a different regulatory perspective: no more rigid and uniform rules, as happened in the “short century”, but a regulation made by differentiation, adaptations, extensions, dilutions. With a unifying value: the reference to the individual, to her/his life project, and ultimately to her/his dignity.

The relationship between Southern Italy and fascism is a little explored theme. The contribution reflects on this subject presenting unpublished conclusions: it starts from a volume by the author named after the monthly magazine 'Il Saggiatore' (Naples 1924-1925) by Gherardo Marone and expands the reflection through a more recent book by Zoppi dedicated to the magazine 'Questioni meridionali', also published in Naples, from 1934 to 1943. The three editors of 'Questioni meridionali' - Giuseppe Cenzato, an entrepreneur who was also the soul of the company, Francesco Giordani, a young chemical scientist, and Gino Olivetti, a politician and industrialist – despite being fascists, they created a periodical that showed how the 'Southern question', never mentioned by the dictatorship, remained, however, alive in its tragic backwardness. Every year, two large issues of the magazine were released, characterized by one or more original studies and always accompanied by extensive bibliographic reviews. Among the topics, analysed by a group of highly qualified scholars and often in comparison with the North of Italy, the following emerged: the railway network, tourism, the demographic and health situation, the birth rate, the difficulties of the construction industry, ports, the economic and production context. The magazine pays particular attention to the city of Naples and its housing drama and to the southern tax system, a primary source of backwardness starting with the problem of local government.

In summer 1923, in the midst of the ‘fight’ to balance the budget, Minister Alberto De Stefani announced the abolition of inheritance tax, pursuant to the ‘full powers’ granted to the government by the Parliament. This abolition – possibly the most iconic act of the ‘financial restauration’ carried on by De Stefani – provoked surprise and interest in the country and abroad but was substantially overlooked by historians. This chapter – first outcome of a research in progress – offers a first historical reconstruction of this episode of early 1920s Italian economic history, by documenting both the positions of an influent advisor of De Stefani, the economist Maffeo Pantaleoni, and even more, the lobbying activity carried on by pressure groups such as the bankers’ association, an influential businessman linked to Mussolini such as Cesare Goldmann, and a young, very proactive association of notaries. Moreover, the chapter surveys the way in which both Italian and international media reported on this case of politics of inequality, offering a different perspective on a crucial period in the consolidation of Fascist power.

The so called "Startup Act" (Decree Law 179/2012, converted into Law 221/2012), has introduced in Italy the notion of innovative companies with a high technological value, denoted as the innovative startups. Among them, the Italian government includes the category of SIAVS ("Startup Innovative A Vocazione Sociale"), which represents a relatively new field of interest in both scientific and normative perspective. A social startup must satisfy the same requirement of other innovative startups, usually operating in sectors such as social assistance, education, health, social tourism and culture which can have a direct (social) impact on collective well-being. Furthermore, they must produce specific reporting of the produced social impact, enjoying also some tax benefits. In 2020 more than 200 SIAVS are registered in Italy, more than doubled with respect to 2015. This work is concerned with the empirical analysis of innovative companies focused in funding and implementing solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues. Specifically, the aim of the paper is to investigate what are the relevant factors for the arise of SIAVS in Italy. The response variable is based on the number of active social startups in Italian provinces while the set of explanatory variables is composed by economic and demographic indicators at the provincial level. Generalized linear models (GLM) for discrete outcomes are applied and compared, even taking into account the zero-inflated issue arising due to the distribution of these particular data.

This chapter focuses on the presence of the road movie in Quebec cinema. The province’s grands espaces, its famous snowy winters, and the ubiquitous presence of the Saint Lawrence River in the life of its citizens make for a propitious and particularly cinegenic exploration of mobility within the region. After tracing in a preliminary section the cinematic antecedents of Quebec’s contemporary road movies, three films are analysed separately: Stéphane Lafleur’s En terrains connus/Familiar Ground (2011), Philippe Falardeau’s Congorama (2006) and Denis Chouinard’s L’ange de goudron/Tar Angel (2001). The intent is to highlight some of the unique contours and distinct cinematic viewpoints of the francophone province, to assess the varying degrees to which the films’ Québécité takes centre stage, and to ponder Quebec cinema’s place within the larger cinéma-monde category.

E-filing is a new service launched in the year 2005 by the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board. This is in line with the government’s vision to leverage on the Internet technology in extending its services to the citizens and to further embrace the cutting-edge technology of the information age. Via this system, the citizens or taxpayers are able to complete an electronic application form and the necessary payment details with a few keystrokes; therefore completing their revenue declaration within minutes. The purpose of the e-filing service is to encourage every taxpayer to submit their income tax returns through an online system, thus reducing the manual paper-based submission method. This paper examines taxpayers’ intention to use the e-filing system in Malaysia. This paper analyses the factors that contribute towards adoption of such system in Malaysia based on three models: the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Diffusion of Innovation (DOI), and Technology Readiness Index (TRI). The authors’ findings suggest that taxpayers have intentions to use the e-filing systems as they perceive that tax submission method via the internet is more convenient and that perceived readiness towards using this technology is paramount to their belief for using e-filing systems.

This research reviews studies using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to create a modified model and instrument to study the acceptance of Internet technology by consumers. We developed a modified TAM for the acceptance of Internet-based technologies by consumers. We retained the original constructs from the TAM and included additional constructs from previous literature including gender, experience, complexity, and voluntariness. We developed a survey instrument using existing scales from prior TAM instruments and modified them where appropriate. The instrument yielded respectable reliability and construct validity. The findings suggest that the modified TAM is a good predictor of consumer behavior in using the Internet. We found that attitude toward using the Internet acts as a strong predictor of behavioral intention to use, and actual usage of Internet technologies. Future researchers can use the resultant instrument to test how consumers adopt and accept Internet-based applications.

The return to face-to-face teaching has served to value those social dynamics that foster a climate of collaborative learning within the classroom. We defined collaborative learning as a set of activities that transcend the practice of work in group, committing the collaboration of students and teachers in achieving common goals. After many years of putting into practice a teaching methodology focused on the creative learning of architectural drawing, we discovered that this collaborative model could be extrapolated to other learning environments. Throughout this text, it is tried to demonstrate how the teaching experience experienced after several years of teaching in degree, has been consolidated as a pedagogical procedure supported by verified teaching approaches that are transportable to other university areas as advanced as the teaching of Master. La vuelta a la docencia presencial, ha servido para poner en valor aquellas dinámicas sociales que fomentan un clima de aprendizaje colaborativo dentro del aula. Entendemos como aprendizaje colaborativo, un conjunto de actividades que trascienden la práctica del trabajo grupal, comprometiendo la colaboración de alumnos y profesores en la consecución de unos objetivos comunes. Después de muchos años de puesta en práctica de una metodología docente enfocada al aprendizaje creativo del dibujar arquitectónico, descubrimos que este modelo colaborativo era extrapolable a otros entornos de aprendizaje. A lo largo de este texto, se trata de demostrar como la experiencia docente experimentada tras varios años en grado, se ha consolidado como un procedimiento pedagógico apoyado en aproximaciones docentes verificadas que son transportables a otros ámbitos universitarios tan avanzados como la docencia de Máster.

Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent mental disorders, reaching million people worldwide. As they share many characteristics these two disorders can manifest themselves together. In addition, stress is one of the related factors with both depression and anxiety, being relevant in the analysis of these disorders. This paper proposes a model for ubiquitous care of patients with depression, anxiety and stress disorders (DASD) using gamification and biodata, called iAware. A/B tests evaluated with a clinical population the interaction engagement of the patient to the treatment provided by gamification. Based on the patient’s history, the iAware monitors and applies interventions for the patient at the most appropriate time. Six patients used a prototype with a smartband for two weeks to evaluate iAware. Interactions with intervention stages were greater in patients who used iAware gamified. A more detailed analysis is still required. The evaluated patients got more occurrences of anxiety at home. The patients also filled out a survey based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). TAM results show that patients have found the iAware useful in their anxiety treatment routines.

The topic of e-commerce has become more and more relevant in the last few years. With the advancement of technology and the ever-increasing power of the internet, many people choose this type of presentation instead of the classic “physical” store or office. Of course, this has its advantages: saving a lot of costs, unlimited market, saving time in endless shopping, and more. With the ever-expanding Internet market, online shopping and retailers offering similar types of services have also become more frequent. Tax authorities are increasingly paying attention to this growing industry. In the tax practice, there are already a large number of merchants who have been severely sanctioned for failing to comply with legal requirements for online business. With regard to the distance selling of goods and services / via e-commerce or otherwise / within the EU there are specific provisions in the European VAT Directive creating obligations to register and charge VAT in the country of consumption. Member States tax administrations are also looking for new and more effective digital business control methods to reduce non-taxation and to increase tax collection. That is why a number of countries are introducing electronic audits / audits / on the basis of enhanced exchange of information and control in real time, such as the new requirements of the H-18 Regulations for cash registers and the introduction of CPRMS / Commercial Property Revenue Management System. The topic presented on the need and application of electronic controls and audits has been particularly relevant in recent years globally. It is linked to the rapid pace of e-commerce development and the increasing profits in the sector at the expense of tax avoidance. This is precisely where the research proves the need to apply and develop control over e-commerce, in conclusion, it can even be assumed that the organization and implementation of electronic control / audit is even delayed.

People with disabilities living in Brazil face great difficulties in the tasks of daily life mainly due to the lack of accessibility in public spaces, products and services. In this context, we noticed a lack of a computing tool that embraces both people with visual and hearing impairment. This work presents TATU -- a mobile application for both Android and iOS platforms aimed at supporting people with visual or hearing impairment to enjoy Brazilian tourist attractions, including both open-air and indoor spaces. TATU application has an adaptive interface exclusively designed for each of the impairment user profiles, it can work on guided tour mode by indoor navigation using BLE beacons and outdoor navigation using GPS. Our solution was evaluated by three experiments, one of which was carried out with blind volunteers and TATU application obtained satisfactory results for both spacious attractions with the lowest density of collection items and for the smallest spaces.

Many tax authorities changed the mode of interacting with taxpayers from physical to online as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, to diminish the spread of the virus. Eswatini, the country under study, mandated the use of online tax filing through the e-Tax system for all income tax payers, coupled with a zero-cash-handling policy for tax payment. By means of a difference-in-difference (DID) strategy, reinforced by a propensity score matching (PSM), this paper offers an impact evaluation of the mandate on taxpayer filing and payment behaviour. We present three sets of results. First, we describe which firms are most likely to register for e-Tax – mostly large firms and those in the primary and tertiary sectors. Second, we show that e-Tax uptake significantly improves filing behaviour, as well as payment behaviour. E-Tax registered taxpayers are less likely to file nil (by 60 per cent), declare more turnover and taxable income, and are 70 per cent more likely to pay conditional on filing. Third, we shed light on the mechanisms behind our main findings, showing that the technology improved accuracy and reduced compliance costs. E-Tax-registered treated taxpayers are more likely to file on time, file for VAT, report more accurately, and, on the payment side, to pay their liabilities in full.

Hepatitis E is an emerging issue, with the number of confirmed cases in the UK increasing in 2009-2015, and decreasing slightly in 2016 and 2017. There is some epidemiological evidence of an association of this virus with undercooked pork and pork products. Currently, there is no standardized method for evaluating thermal stability of HEV and also a lack of a suitable assay that can distinguish between intact HEV that can cause an infection and damaged virus which is not capable of causing an infection. This has raised concerns as it is extremely difficult to extrapolate the risk from pork products in relation to cooking practices. We are seeking to address this knowledge gap, which will not only inform our risk assessment, but will also provide an indication if cooking is sufficient to inactivate the virus in foods

Research participants are required to give their consent to participate in clinical trials and nonexempt government-funded studies. The goal is to facilitate participant understanding of the intent of the research, its voluntary nature, and the potential benefits and harms. Ideally, participants make an informed choice whether to participate; one that is based on having sufficient relevant knowledge and that is consistent with their values and preferences. Achieving this objective can be challenging, and as such, many scholars have declared the consent process flawed or “broken.” Moreover, clinical trials are complex studies, and compelling evidence suggests that current consent processes are inadequate in achieving informed choice. E-consent offers a dynamic, engaging consent delivery mode that can effectively support making informed decisions about whether to participate in a trial.

As they increasingly adopt digital infrastructure, public administrations worldwide are increasingly collecting, generating and managing data. Empirical researchers are, at the same time, collaborating more and more with administrations, accessing vast amounts of data, and setting new research agendas. These collaborations have taken place in low-income countries in particular, where administrative data can be a valuable substitute for scarce survey data. However, the transition to a full-fledged digital administration can be a long and difficult process, sharply contrasting the common leap-frog narrative. Based on observations made during a five-year research collaboration with the Senegalese tax administration, this qualitative case study discusses the main data management challenges the tax administration faces. Much progress has recently been made with the modernisation of the administration’s digital capacity ,and adoption of e-filling and e-payment systems. However, there remains substantial scope for the administration to enhance data management and improve its efficiency in performing basic tasks, such as the identification of active taxpayers or the detection of various forms of non-compliance. In particular, there needs to be sustained investment in human resources specifically trained in data analysis. Recently progress has been made through creating – in collaboration with the researchers – a ‘datalab’ that now works to improve processes to collect, clean, merge and use data to improve revenue mobilisation.

Active transportation can play an important role in promoting more physically active and positive public health outcomes. While walking and biking provide significant physical health benefits, their modal share remains low. As a new form of micromobility service, shared e-scooters can enhance the suite of options available in cities to promote active transportation and fill in the gaps when walking or biking are not preferred. Although e-scooters show potential as a mode of transportation, it is unclear whether people will adopt the technology for everyday use. Furthermore, shared micromobility (e.g., electric scooters) is gaining attention as a complementary mode to public transit and is expected to offer a solution to access/egress for public transit. However, few studies have analyzed integrated usage of shared e-scooters and public transit systems while using panel data to measure spatial and temporal characteristics. This study aims to examine the adoption and frequency of shared e-scooter usage and provide policy implementation. To do so, the researchers launched a survey in the Chicago region in late 2020 and collected a rich data set that includes residents’ sociodemographic details and frequency of shared e-scooter use. To characterize the frequency, the researchers used an ordered probit structure. The findings show that respondents who are male, low income, Millennials and Generation Z, or do not have a vehicle are associated with a higher frequency of shared e-scooter use. Furthermore, this study utilizes shared e-scooter trips for a 35-day measurement period from 10 shared e-scooter operators in Chicago, where the researchers used a random-parameter negative binomial modeling approach to analyze panel effects. The findings highlight the critical role of spatial and temporal characteristics in the integration of shared e-scooters with transit.

The use of digital financial services, including money transfers and mobile money, have expanded widely in lower-income countries in the past decade; 47 per cent of the population of sub-Saharan Africa (548 million) had a registered mobile money account in 2020, with 29 per cent of those accounts representing active users (Andersson-Manjang and Naghavi 2021: 8). Among lower-income countries for which data is available, the average number of mobile money accounts is more than double the number of commercial bank accounts. In many lower-middle-income countries, mobile money usage is the same or more than commercial bank usage (Bazarbash et al. 2020). Alongside this growth, governments have increasingly sought to tax DFS, rooted in deeper discussions about the role that technology can play in increasing tax revenue and strengthening overall state capacity (Fan et al. 2020; Okunogbe and Santoro 2021). While capturing revenue from DFS can come from many sources, mobile money taxes in particular have often been introduced due to the untapped revenue potential and the relatively convenient and easy nature of the tax handle (Lees and Akol 2021a) – particularly in relation to, say, corporate income taxes on financial service providers. As noted above, the search for revenue is often closely linked to a desire to capture revenue from workers in the informal economy, who are often framed as tax evaders.

The adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the public sector, including for tax administration, has been hailed as potentially transformational over the last few decades. Its impact has been less far-reaching than imagined. A literature examining the determinants of – and obstacles to – ICT adoption arose as a result, almost exclusively focusing on the experience of high-income countries. However, understanding the experience of adoption in low-income countries is equally important, especially given the potential role that ICTs can play in tackling various development issues, including increasing mobilisation of domestic revenue. To help fill this gap, we present two in-depth case studies of the process of adopting an integrated tax administration system (ITAS) in Uganda and Sierra Leone, based on a series of semi-structured interviews with members of the respective revenue authorities and ministries of finance. Our analysis shows that many of the factors that facilitate and impede the adoption process are the same as those identified in high-income countries. However, we also identify some factors that are more likely to be relevant for low-income countries. These include the impact of the timeline for disbursing donor funding, the processes donors require to be used for procurement, and the quality of legacy data to be migrated into the new system. The need to embark on change management and re-engineering business processes was also recognised more fully than might have been expected in countries with relatively little prior experience in e-government services.

In early 2022, the Agricultural Policy Research in Africa (APRA) Programme of the Future Agricultures Consortium (FAC), in partnership with the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Foresight4Food, held an e-Dialogue series: Towards an Equitable and Sustainable Transformation of Food Systems. This followed an earlier, highly successful series organised with the same partners in the second half of 2020 on What Future for Small-Scale Farming? The latest series included three online Zoom sessions led by APRA over January-March 2022 on topics including COVID-19 and its effects on local food systems and rural livelihoods, and transition pathways and strategies for supporting more equitable and resilient food systems in Africa. These virtual events were designed to replace an international conference that was part of APRA’s original end-of-programme plan, before the COVID-19 crisis prevented large, physical gatherings. The three e-Dialogues brought together APRA researchers and expert commentators from across sub-Saharan Africa, as well as a wider audience. The objective of these dialogues was to examine evidence and lessons from APRA’s six-year collaborative research programme (2016-22) analysing the dynamics of agricultural commercialisation processes, agrarian change and rural transformation in the region. This report looks at their impact, what worked well, and what could have been improved.

Using a sample of more than 12,000 firms in 32 countries, this paper empirically examines the impact of digital technology on the resilience of enterprises during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. After controlling for firm characteristics, macroeconomic conditions, and pandemic prevalence, the paper finds that digital technology had a significant and positive effect on firm performance during the pandemic. The plant hormone auxin is involved in numerous developmental processes, including leaf and fruit development. The tomato (Solanumlycopersicum) gene ENTIRE (E) encodes an auxin-response inhibitor from the Aux/IAA family. While most loss-offunction mutations in Aux/IAA genes are similar to the wild type due to genetic redundancy, entire (e) mutants show specific effects on leaf and fruit development. e mutants have simple leaves, in contrast to the compound leaves of wild type tomatoes. In addition, e plants produce parthenocarpic fruits, in which fruit set occurs independently of fertilization. The aim of this research program was to utilize the e mutation to identify and characterize genes that mediate the specific effect of auxin in leaf and fruit development. The specific objectives of the project were to: 1. Characterize and map modifiers of the e leaf phenotype. 2. Characterize and map suppressors of the e fruit phenotype. 3. Dissect the developmental specificity of the E gene. 4. Examine the effect of fruit-overexpression of identified genes on fruit set and seed production. To identify mediators of auxin in leaf development, we mainly focused on one mutant, crawling elephant (crel, previously called t282), which showed substantial suppression of the e phenotype and other auxin-relatedphenotypes. We have identified the CREL gene as a homolog of the Arabidopsis VRN5 gene, involved in recruiting polycomb silencing complexes to specific targets. We showed that CREL affects auxin sensitivity in tomato. Suppressors of the e fruit phenotype have been further characterized and selected for more profound effects. Expression profiling by RNAseq was used to analyze the effect of e as well as crel on gene expression in leaves and fruits. This analysis has identified putative E and CREL targets. We have initiated studies to assess the role of some of these targets in flower and fruit development. The research has identified potential mediators of auxin response in leaf, flower and fruit development.
