Full textYoung children, before ent4ering into kindergarten, may have gone through various modes of nursing. Our research details with the effects of this mode of nursing as the detected in the first year of kindergarten, on a sampling of children respectively nursed by their mother, a maternal assistant or in a lady nursery. The scope of the study includes analyses of the behavior of the children in the classroom and in the playground one month after school return, en the second and in the third quarter. We analyze the behavior modes concerning social relations hip between children and with the teacher, and concerning equipement use and activities. Our results indicate that a stable and collective mode of nursing has positive influence on integration into kindergarten, mainly on the point of view of social relationship. The children nursed by their mother or by their nurse use different behavioral modes: they are slower to integrate into the group of equals; they are more dependent on the adult

Full textWomen's participation in the labour force doesn't depend only on economic variables such as women' wage and family incom e. In fact we always have to take into account the impact of child care modes on this participation. For this reason, the presence of relatives in the household, who constitute a potential source for child care, has also an affect on woman's decision to participate in the labour force. Considering the impact of female participation on the labour market , we find that the increase in the number of women in the labour force has a negative effect on the wage level of younger workers

Full textIn France, work-family policies rely mainly on the development of formal childcare. Yet grandparents still have an important role in the daily arrangements of families. How can this involvement of grandparents be explained? By allying the contributions of the sociology of the family and the studies on work-family reconciliation, and based on the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, this thesis examines to what extent the efforts of parents to articulate professional time and family aspirations are often stopgap solutions made on a daily basis. The use of grandparental childcare is a case study for such analysis. This thesis focuses on two logics. First, while there is a norm of what is good grandparenting that determines the way grandparents should get involved in childcare, it originates from the upper-classes and is not homogeneously internalized in all social categories. Parents' educational strategies and expectations regarding grandparents differ according to their social background. Second, professional, family and institutional contexts act as constraints and opportunities that influence parents' daily arrangements and lead them to modify their educational strategies as to the degree and forms of grandparents' involvement. The analysis of the articulation of these logics makes it possible to identify four types of use of grandparents for the care of young children: temporary fix care, routine care, intensive care and leisure care. This thesis also shows how grandparent involvement affects child development. It invites us to consider grandparental childcare as a broad set of practices through which inequalities can be transmitted

Full textFamily policies in Europe have undergone significant changes in the last few decades, improving the well-being, functioning, and responsibilities of families with children. This thesis aims to investigate how paternity leave policies impact parental mental health as well as explore how Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) impacts children's socio-emotional development throughout childhood. The first article of this thesis examines the relationship between paternity leave uptake in France and mothers' and fathers' post-partum depression two months post-birth, using data from a nationally-representative birth cohort. Fathers who took paternity leave as well as fathers who intended to take paternity leave had lower odds of PPD compared to fathers who did not take paternity leave. Conversely, mothers whose partner took paternity leave had higher odds of PPD.The second article of this thesis explores the relationship between different types of ECEC attendance (centre-based childcare, informal childcare, and exclusive parental care) prior to primary school on children's internalizing and externalizing symptoms from 5-13 years across five European countries. The study found that children who attended centre-based childcare have slightly lower internalizing and externalizing symptoms between 7-13 years, but children who attended informal childcare had higher internalizing and externalizing symptoms between 7-13 years. This thesis highlights the importance of considering aspects such as mental health and children's development when developing family policies. Further research is needed to understand the effects of a longer paternity leave on mother's PPD. Additionally, policies that enhance access to affordable, subsidized centre-based childcare prior to primary school can be one step in improving children's socio-emotional development

Full textThis thesis aims to comprehend how children in joint physical custody evolve themselves in terms of socio-emotional adaptation and quality of life and analyzing the factors that could have an impact on their socio-emotional development. This study is based on a theoretical eco-systemic approach (Bronfenbrenner, 2005). Considering person, family and context to be the scales of comparision for the development of these children. The operational model of« the Process–Person–Context–Time » (Bronfenbrenner, 1996), allowed us to analyze the contribution of the aforementioned factors on these children.According to this perspective, 38 families having 56 children between the ages 4-12 years old in joint physical custody participated in this study through a questionary. The socio-emotional development was analyzed by taking into account the « Autoquestionnaire Qualité de vie-Enfant-Imagé » (A.U.Q.U.E.I. ; Manificat & Dazord, 1997) and the « Child Behavior Checklist » (C.B.C.L. ; Achenbach, 1991). The mothers and/or the fathers were also queried to evaluate their parenting abilities by using several tools as follows the « Coparental Interaction Scale » (Ahrons & Wallisch, 1987), the « Parenting Alliance Inventory » (Abidin & Brunner, 1995) and the « Post-Divorce Conflict Scale » (Sonnenblick & Scharwz, 1992). The post-conjugal relationship was analyzed by the following « Coparental Interaction Scale, nonparental dimension » (Ahrons & Wallisch, 1987) and « Attachment Scale » (Kitson, 1982).Our principal results indicate that children in joint custody testify globally a satisfactory quality of life particularly in the sphere of family upbringing. Also approximately three quarters of the total children can be placed in the non- pathological zone on the internalized adaptation and the externalized adaptation scale. Amongst the factors taken into consideration, we note that first of all there is a significant effect of the sex and age of the children between 4 to 6 years tend to show less personal internalizing problems. While the girls can be placed on the pathological scale of externalizing adaptation in a larger number compared to the boys. Secondly, the results reveals that the co-parental relationship influences the socio-emotional development of children and that the covert hostility constitutes the most raddled risk factor. However, this result varies according to the age of children. Finally, the impact of the characteristics of the context is highlighted, namely the post-conjugal relationship, the degree of hostility before the separation and the type of agreement that the parents express of their children’s development. Nevertheless, it is proved that this influence is indirect but moderated by the co-parental relationship. The total of the obtained results allows us to propose new perspectives and leads for intervention
