Abstract:
Most industrial and SCADA-like (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems use proprietary communication protocols, and hence interoperability is not fulfilled. However, the MODBUS TCP is an open de facto standard, and is used for some automation and telecontrol systems. It is based on a polling mechanism and follows the synchronous request–response pattern, as opposed to the asynchronous publish–subscribe pattern. In this study, polling-based and event-based protocols are investigated to realize an open and interoperable Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environment. Many Internet of Things (IoT) protocols are introduced and compared, and the message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) is chosen as the event-based, publish–subscribe protocol. The study shows that MODBUS defines an optimized message structure in the application layer, which is dedicated to industrial applications. In addition, it shows that an event-oriented IoT protocol complements the MODBUS TCP but cannot replace it. Therefore, two scenarios are proposed to build the IIoT environment. The first scenario is to consider the MODBUS TCP as an IoT protocol, and build the environment using the MODBUS TCP on a standalone basis. The second scenario is to use MQTT in conjunction with the MODBUS TCP. The first scenario is efficient and complies with most industrial applications where the request–response pattern is needed only. If the publish–subscribe pattern is needed, the MQTT in the second scenario complements the MODBUS TCP and eliminates the need for a gateway; however, MQTT lacks interoperability. To maintain a homogeneous message structure for the entire environment, industrial data are organized using the structure of MODBUS messages, formatted in the UTF-8, and then transferred in the payload of an MQTT publish message. The open and interoperable environment can be used for Internet SCADA, Internet-based monitoring, and industrial control systems.

Abstract:
Abstract Industrial networks combine elements of distributed control systems: process stations, operator stations and engineering stations. DCS stations often communicate using a dedicated, closed communication protocol. The industrial networks can be also used to manage communication between the stations of various systems, separate in terms of configuration. The process station communicates here with an external operator station, that is the SCADA system. For this purpose, the process stations and the SCADA systems can also communicate according to standard communication protocols, e.g. Modbus TCP. The paper examines the selected variants of diagnosing the communication status between the process station and the external operator station conducted according to the Modbus TCP protocol. The practical methods of finding the communication system unfitness causes are discussed.

Abstract:
The increased number of cyber threats against the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and automation systems in the Industrial-Internet-of-Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 era has raised concerns in respect to the importance of securing critical infrastructures and manufacturing plants. The evolution towards interconnection and interoperability has expanded the vulnerabilities of these systems, especially in the context of the widely spread legacy standard protocols, by exposing the data to the outside network. After gaining access to the system data by launching a variety of attacks, an intruder can cause severe damage to the industrial process in place. Hence, this paper attempts to respond to the security issue caused by legacy structures using insecure communication protocols (e.g., Modbus TCP, DNP3, S7), presenting a different perspective focused on the capabilities of a trusted platform module (TPM). Furthermore, the intent is to assure the authenticity of the data transmitted between two entities on the same (horizontal interoperation) or different (vertical interoperation) hierarchical levels communicating through Modbus TCP protocol based on functionalities obtained by integrating trusted platform modules. From the experimental results perspective, the paper aims to show the advantages of integrating TPMs in automation/SCADA systems in terms of security. Two methods are proposed in order to assure the authenticity of the messages which are transmitted, respectively the study presents the measurements related to the increased time latency introduced due to the proposed concept.

Abstract:
Communication through the internet is one of the dominant methods of exchanging information. TCP and UDP are the transport layer protocols responsible for transit of nearly all Internet communications. Due to the growth of real-time audio and video applications, UDP is being used more frequently as a transport protocol, but unlike TCP, UDP has no mechanism for congestion control leading to wasted bandwidth and poor performance, so the DCCP protocol has appeared as a replacement for UDP. In this article, the author performs some simulations using NS2 for Drop Tail and RED queuing models to evaluate the performance of TCP, UDP, DCCP CCID2, and DCCP CCID3 protocols in congested wired networks. The performance metrics used are throughput, end to end delay, number of sent and lost packets. The obtained results show that the DCCP CCID2 performs the best throughput with the minimum of delay as compared to UDP, TCP, and DCCP CCID3.

In control technique there is evident highly expressive trend of shifting from efficient central managing systems towards smaller systems which are distributed on technology and which are connected by communication bus. There is no need to link all signals to central management system, operation is then distributed and realized directly in individual parts of technology. That’s why these systems are called distributive managing systems. Distributive managing systems are widely used not only in industrial applications but also in buildings, cars, etc..

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The recent performance improvements of wireless communication systems are presenting possibilites for the use of wireless networks for industrial applications, which typically impose severe restrictions in terms of response time and flexibility. Traditionally most of the industrial protocols employ cable connections, which have limitations in terms of flexibility and development oportunities. The industrial protocol used for this project, is the Modbus protocol. This protocol is developed and implemented on a wireless environment by using data radio modems. The Modbus protocol is a master/slave protocol which provides an industry standard for industrial data transfer. A Modbus driver is designed for radio networks, so that it can function with different PLCs and SCADA packages, supporting Modbus protocol. This enables control and monitoring to be excercised over a long distance, and enables control equipment to be placed as required and not with particular wiring restrictions.
Die Modbus protokol is as basis in hierdie projek gebruik.

A company in South Africa is a three-phase induction motor protection relay manufacturer. The function of the protection relay is to capture running data, to provide protection against possible damage, to control an electric motor and to communicate this data to the System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system in a control room. In the case of remote sites e.g. a pump station, the protection relays are used as standalone units. The protection relays are equipped with communication facilities to be used in an instrumentation environment. If a trip occurs or settings need to be changed a technician has to visit the remote site and address the problem. The ideal cost and time effective solution is to perform these tasks remotely via a reliable wireless network. A study was conducted to ascertain the viability of using the standard GSM cellular networks in South Africa to effectively control electric motors and to communicate with the Motor Protection Relays (MPRs) controlling the electric motors in order to determine the status of a motor, settings of the motor, trips that occurred and time of occurrence. It was shown that a node controller could be used to store all the data from various electric motors at a single location. It was also shown that the data from the different electric motors could be analysed at the node controller and that communication can then be initiated from the controller to a responsible person via the GSM network. It was further illustrated that, by making use of the GSM networks in South Africa together with the short message service (SMS), communication and control can be effectively established. SMSs proved to be a reliable means of communication between cellular phones, an embedded network and MPRs. It was shown that software protocols, although slower in communication speed, proved to be reliable and effective for the purpose of transferring information between the node controller and the motor protection relays connected to the electric motors.

Abstract:
The congestion control mechanisms of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) are very effective in providing best effort service in wired networks, where packet losses are mainly due to congestion in the network. In wireless mobile networks, more often than not, loss of packets is because of corruption of data on the wireless link. The TCP sender responds to these losses as if they are due to congestion, by reducing its congestion window, thereby reducing the rate of flow of packets. The reduction in congestion window is a necessity when network is experiencing congestion to avoid congestion collapse but it is not required if packet losses occur due to corruption of data on the wireless link. This unnecessary reduction in congestion window for corruption losses is the main reason for poor throughput of data transfer in wireless networks. The reduction in congestion window for corruption losses can be avoided if TCP can successfully differentiate between packet losses due to congestion and corruption. We suggest enhancements to TCP that, if implemented, will help the TCP receiver in separately identifying corruption losses and congestion losses. The enhancements are suggested over and above standard TCP NewReno and we call this new scheme as "NewRenoEln (NewReno with Explicit Loss Notification)". We suggest that the TCP sender attach a separate checksum for the TCP header with the packet. Since the length of the TCP header is much smaller as compared to the length of the TCP packet, there is a large probability that the TCP receiver will receive the header portion of the TCP packet without error even if the data portion of the packet is corrupted. Once the header information is found to be correct for a corrupted packet, the receiver can generate reliable Explicit 5oss Notification (ELN) for the sender. We derive an expression for the probability of a receiver generating successful Explicit Loss Notification, assuming a generic link layer protocol that is used for data transfer over wireless link. With this analysis, we show that there is large probability that receiver will generate successful ELN for various channel conditions We also suggest modifications to the sender behavior on receiving successful Explicit Loss Notification from the receiver. With these modifications, the TCP sender will recover from corruption losses without any reduction in congestion window. There is also a need to develop a unified analytical approach for the evaluation of TCP performance. We develop an analytical approach for the performance evaluation of NewRenoEln scheme. We compare the throughput results obtained by analytical calculations with results obtained by simulation and find them to be very close to each other. We also compare the performance of the proposed scheme NewRenoEln and the standard NewReno TCP via simulation as well as analytical approach, and find considerable improvement in throughput over wireless links.

Reliable transport protocols such as TCP are tuned to perform well in traditional networks where packet losses occur mostly because of congestion. TCP is intended for use as a highly reliable end-to-end transport protocol for transporting applications such as World-Wide Web (WWW) between hosts in packet-switched computer communication networks. TCP was originally designed for wired links where the error rate is really low and actually assumed that packet losses are due to congestion in the network. However, the increasing popularity of wireless networks indicates that wireless links will play more important role in future internetworks but TCP performance in such networks suffers from significant throughput degradation and very high interactive delays. TCP responds to all losses by invoking congestion control and avoidance algorithms, resulting in degraded end-to-end performance in wireless and lossy systems. Thus, in a bid to show and determine the possibility of adapting TCP protocol for optimal performance on the wireless link, this paper reviews and models the behaviors of TCP variants with a view to evaluate the end-to-end performance analysis of TCP versions: TCP Reno, TCP SACK and TCP Westwood (TCPW), which are designed to improve the performance of TCP in lossy networks. A wireless network model was developed using NS-2 network simulator which and the model was simulated. The results were analyzed in MATLAB 6.5 using throughput as a metric for comparison. The overall results indicate that TCP Westwood (TCPW) demonstrates better performance indices over other versions in a hybrid wireless network environment.

Abstract:
Control and data acquisition systems are required in researching facilities to analyze the behaviour of any process. In this paper, the results of the design and implementation of an automation and control system applied to a microgrid based on renewables energy are shown. The microgrid is located in the Laboratory for Distributed energy resources – LabDER at the Institute for Energy Engineering at UPV. The brain of the system is a PLC, programmed to carry out several tasks to guarantee the correct operation of the system. The measuring devices used are power meters, anemometer, temperature sensors and a solar cell to measure irradiance. The communication protocol used is Modbus TCP IP, Modbus RS-485 and Xanbus. All the information is centralized using a SCADA as an HMI. As a result, a robust control, and data acquisition system, able to manage a microgrid for researching purpose was obtained.

Abstract:
Abstract Investigations using laboratory test benches are the most common way to find the technological solutions that will increase the efficiency of internal combustion engines and curtail their emissions. In addition, the collected experimental data are used by the CFD community to develop engine models that reduce the time-to-market. This paper describes the steps made to increase the reliability of engine experiments performed in a heavy-duty natural-gas spark-ignition engine test-cell such as the design of the control and data acquisition system based on Modbus TCP communication protocol. Specifically, new sensors and a new dynamometer controller were installed. The operation of the improved test bench was investigated at several operating conditions, with data obtained at both high- and low-sampling rates. The results indicated a stable test bench operation.

Abstract:
Ash and slag deposits in coal fired boilers contribute to boiler in-efficiency, capacity reductions, and overheated tubes, which lead to tube failures. Typical on-line cleaning systems are not automated and do not optimize the removal of ash and slag deposits. The paper describes the development and implementation of an Intelligent Sootblowing (ISB) system which monitors data such as heat transfer rate and pendant weight and operates the boiler cleaning devises in an automatic mode. The system operates cleaning equipment to only clean what needs to be cleaned, thus reducing tube erosion and clinker formation. The Intelligent Sootblowing (ISB) system uses the process data, algorithms, thermodynamic models, and ash weight to derive a supervisory sequence control to initiate most effective sootblowing device, when and where necessary. Unique strain gage ash weight measurement feedback is utilized in the system. The system is modular and built with an Open Architecture off the shelf components. It comprises PLC Panels, Data Acquisition Panels and HMI (Human Machine Interface) / EWS (Engineering Work Station) using distributed controls architecture. This system also supports industry standard communication protocols, which provides seamless integration between the ISB system and the plant’s DCS. This protocol can be Ethernet, Modbus, Modbus TCP, DH+ or Serial. The Case Studies will describe existing installations where the integrated system controls the entire boiler cleaning system. One installation is in Texas for an 850 MW, supercritical Combustion Engineering tangential fired pulverized coal unit. The boiler burns Texas lignite coal with as much as 15% Powder River Basin coal blended. The soot blowing system consists of 50 retractable soot blowers and 8 water cannons plus air heater cleaners. Testing for this unit was supervised by EPRI. A second installation is in Louisiana where the system improved overall plant efficiency as much as 1% with a resulting high return on investment. Improvements also included improved heat rate, boiler efficiency, a reduction in spray flow and a reduction in soot blowing events.

Abstract:
Recent advances in PLC, SCADA and leak detection system technologies lead to the development of a highly integrated control system. Interconnected with fiber optic communication speeds (OC-1), this level of integration moves away from the historic model of stand-alone field controllers connected over low speed communication links to a centralized control center which, in turn, exchanges data from the host system to stand-alone leak detection processors. A new system design approach utilized familiar pipeline control elements such as PLC controllers and MODBUS communication protocols in combination with elements more typically associated with an office environment such as Windows NT servers, PC compatible computers, and Ethernet TCP/IP communications networks. These open-architecture components were used to fully develop, debug and test the SCADA system prior to system startup. The pipeline simulator is used as the centerpiece for this process to perform thorough operational validation of the system long before initial linefill. Once the various components were fully tested they were exported to the physical system in an operational state. The result is nearly seamless control systems supported by high data rates, high model speeds, common databases, and multi-channel communications. The increased level of integration has had dramatic impacts in leak detection, system safety, engineering development, operator training, and overall reliability of the control systems. The following paper presents a narrative overview of these new developments in the context of an implementation on Pacific Pipeline System (PPS). PPS is a recently constructed and commissioned 209 km (130 mile), 50.8 cm (20″) diameter, hot crude oil pipeline between the southern portion of California’s San Joaquin Valley and refineries in the Los Angeles basin. Following the Interstate 5 corridor over the “Grapevine”, Tejon Pass, Angeles National Forest and through heavily populated areas, this pipeline traverses some of the most environmentally and safety sensitive regions in the United States. The joint federal and state Environmental Impact Report / Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) set high hurdles for leak detection and control system performance. The historic control architecture and technologies were not adequate. This paper provides an overview of the environmental and physical constraints of the Pacific Pipeline System alignment, hydraulics, pumping and metering equipment, and block valve locations. It also discusses their impact on the design, programming and commissioning of a SCADA system meeting the requirements of the EIR/EIS. The paper then describes in more detail the fiber-optic communication system, control system architecture, SCADA system, leak detection models, simulator models and implementation methods, along with the engineering decisions leading to a comprehensive solution for the SCADA and leak detection requirements.
