Abstract:
Nokia scaled up remarkably quickly in the 1990s, faster than any producer of a complicated product ever had before. However, by 1995 Nokia had lost control of its supply chain, going through what it refers to as a “logistics crisis.” This chapter reviews and analyzes the factors that allowed extremely fast growth, and also discusses how Nokia was able to recover from the logistics crisis by bringing greater discipline to how Nokia Mobile Phones was run and greater sophistication to supply chain management. Nokia also created a New Venture organization with a mission to search for a “third leg,” beyond the successful Mobile Phones and Networks businesses. The chapter analyzes how these developments enabled the continuation of extraordinarily rapid growth through the late 1990s, but also sowed the seeds of later difficulties.

Abstract:
This is a book about worldschooling and the families who educate their young children while traveling the world. Adopted primarily by white, middle-class parents from the Global North, worldschooling represents a new kind of life strategy, one that starts with seeing the world as their children’s classroom, but extends to the way worldschoolers parent, perform family life, work digitally and remotely, create communities online and on the road, and negotiate a sense of belonging and global citizenship on the move. While worldschooling appears to be a countercultural practice, it is actually emblematic of the mobile lifestyles that are becoming more common in contemporary society as individuals search for the “good life” in uncertain times. Based on a “mobile virtual ethnography” of traveling families, the book illustrates how this mobile lifestyle project is interwoven with the new individualism of late modernity, the new technical and economic arrangements of neoliberal capitalism, and the new uncertainties of life in a risk society. Each chapter details the strategies worldschooling parents deploy to live a good and morally justifiable life under the turbulent conditions of late modernity while preparing their children to thrive in an uncertain future. This analysis reveals that mobile lifestyles do not transcend social hierarchies, but introduce new mechanisms of distinction. Instead of transmitting economic capital to their children, worldschooling parents secure their children’s position of privilege in an uncertain world by equipping them with new forms of social, emotional, and cultural capital derived through mobility.

Hutchinson, G. O. What is a Setting? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198805823.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
The idea that a poem has ‘a setting’, this chapter argues, should give way to a more dynamic sense of changing spatial contexts. These contexts form part of a structuring which informs much personal lyric poetry, as is illustrated from Alcaeus and Horace: in this structuring, situation and resolution are in conflict, and the conflict is often heightened through opposing spaces. Spaces frequently contrast in scale; one spatial context often changes in a poem; spatial contexts are commonly not real or immediate. The poetry is mobile and unpredictable, but shaped by deep structures—which, in contrast with some genres, it does not keep to a normal sequence. Opposed spatial domains are exemplified from Joseph Roth, the search for structures from Lessing.

Abstract:
This chapter seeks to identify principles that we can glean from nature regarding the design and operation of hands, and to show how they influence robotic hands and can improve their performance. The need to grasp and manipulate objects is faced by a wide range of animals, from insects to humans. The corresponding variety of solutions is immense, ranging from pincers to hands. However, a number of strategies appear repeatedly including the use of compliant, articulated appendages to achieve a large workspace and the use of automatic responses to tactile stimuli. Mobile robots face similar challenges and can exploit similar solutions. Numerical simulation is useful for analyzing hands that are required to grasp a range of objects and impart desired forces and motions. However, grasp simulation is inherently complex and the design search space is large. Hence, it is useful to examine natural exemplars to guide the design process.

Abstract:
While small in number, the place of the Indian in South Africa has historically loomed large because of their strong commercial and professional middle class, international influence through India, the commitment of many Indians to the anti-apartheid struggle and the prominent role that they have played in political and economic life post-apartheid. A History of the Present is the first book-length overview of Indian South Africans in the quarter century following the end of apartheid. Based on oral interviews and archival research it threads a narrative of the lives of Indian South Africans that ranges from the working class men and women to the heady heights of the newly minted billionaires; the changes wrought in the fields of religion and gender; opportunities offered on the sporting fields; the search for roots both locally and in India that also witnesses the rise of transnational organizations. Indians in South Africa appear to be always caught in an infernal contradiction; too traditional, too insular, never fitting in, while also too modern, too mobile. While focusing on Indian South Africans, this study makes critical interventions into several charged political discussions in post-apartheid South Africa, especially the debate over race and identity, while also engaging in discussions of wider intellectual interest, including diaspora, nation, and citizenship.

Abstract:
Advances in online technology and news systems, such as automated reasoning across digital resources and connectivity to cloud servers for storage and software, have changed digital journalism production and publishing methods. Integrated media systems used by editors are also conduits to search systems and social media, but the lure of big data and rise in fake news have fragmented some layers of journalism, alongside investments in analytics and a shift in the loci for verification. Data has generated new roles to exploit data insights and machine learning methods, but access to big data and data lakes is so significant it has spawned newsworthy partnerships between media moguls and social media entrepreneurs. However, digital journalism does not even have its own semantic systems that could protect the values of journalism, but relies on the affordances of other systems. Amidst indexing and classification systems for well-defined vocabulary and concepts in news, data leaks and metadata present challenges for journalism. By contrast data visualisations and real-time field reporting with short-form mobile media and civilian drones set new standards during the European asylum seeker crisis. Aerial filming with drones also adds to the ontological base of journalism. An ontology for journalism and intersecting ontologies can inform the design of new semantic learning systems. The Semantic CAT Method, which draws on participatory design and game design, also assists the conceptual design of synthetic players with emotion attributes, towards a meta-model for learning. The design of context-aware sensor systems to protect journalists in conflict zones is also discussed.
