Abstract:
This thesis investigates the feasibility of deploying mobile communication networks at the THz frequency range. Three areas were identified as the major issues on the way towards realising a functional THz mobile communication system: the high atmospheric attenuation levels and obstacle shadowing at the THz range, the deficiency in THz devices suitable for mobile telecommunications and the availability of reliable models for the analysis and design of THz radio networks.

Owen, Thomas. "Mobile technologies for chronic condition management." Thesis, Swansea University, 2015. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42665.

Full text
Abstract:
The management of long term chronic conditions is a complex and challenging task. The process relies on individuals engaging in regular recording of factors that affect their health. Yet currently, the mobile tools that people carry with them are not being fully utilised to assist in this process. This Thesis reports on research that has been completed to understand the role that mobile technologies can have in supporting people with chronic conditions. An individual engaging in personal monitoring is concerned with the data they collect, not the process used to capture the data. The results of the research conducted contribute to an advancement of knowledge around how mobile technologies can assist in personal reflection on health information to provide greater understanding of chronic disease management This understanding of the role of reflection in chronic condition management can then be used as a platform to improve the mobile interventions in future implementations. These findings are arrived at by conducting an initial investigation into the usage of existing health monitoring devices and an evaluation of these devices is detailed. The results of this early work suggests there exists a gap between real practice and the role that mobile technologies can play in assisting with the process. A deeper understanding of the management practices of people with diabetes is then achieved through a set of interviews with individuals with diabetes. The findings then define a model of chronic disease management, named the 'Diabetes Management Cycle.' Following the definition of the cycle, a mobile application was implemented and deployed during a four week evaluation with individuals with type 1 diabetes. This system was designed to support existing management practices and implemented simple methods of information capture. A second application was then developed to enable increased monitoring and subsequent reflection amongst individuals with cardiovascular conditions. The application was deployed in a six week in-situ evaluation and it was discovered a personalised 'tagging' mechanism allowed for the discovery of patterns affecting health. Based on the findings of the studies, the Thesis concludes by presenting definitions of ready- to-hand in the short- and long-term contexts of mobile health management. These ready-to-hand guidelines provide a platform for future research projects to build upon.

Summet, Valerie Henderson. "Facilitating communication for deaf individuals with mobile technologies." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/33878.

Full text
Abstract:
Communication between deaf individuals and hearing individuals can be very difficult. For people who are born deaf, English is often a second language with the first language being American Sign Language (ASL). Very few hearing people in the United States sign or are aware of Deafness, Deaf culture, or how to appropriately communicate with people with hearing loss. In this thesis, I concentrate on the role that mobile technologies can play in ameliorating some of these issues. In formative work with Deaf teenagers in the metro-Atlanta area, I investigate the role that communication technologies play in the lives of many Deaf individuals and examine how these devices have effected their communication patterns and social circles. Specifically, the teens identified problems communicating with hearing individuals such as close friends and family in face-to-face situations. Having identified sign language use at home as one of the earliest interventions for Deaf children, I investigated the use of mobile phones for learning survival-level ASL. I created a prototype software application which presented short ASL lessons via either a mobile phone or desktop web-browser. The software presented the lessons via one of two different scheduling methods designed to take advantage of the spacing effect during learning. I designed and conducted a study of forty individuals with no prior ASL knowledge which compared the effects of both scheduling algorithm and platform. My results show that individuals who used a mobile phone platform and received a group of lessons at one time performed better on post-test receptive and generative ASL metrics than did participants in the three other conditions.

Rowell, Corbett Ray. "Mobile device antenna design & isolation technologies." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B50533897.

Full text
Abstract:
Mobile device antenna design and isolation technologies are thoroughly investigated in this thesis. The antenna design parameters for mobile devices are quantified using practical restraints by analyzing almost 60 mobile handsets and the effect of materials, human tissue, manufacturing, and antenna type/placement on antenna design and then mapped into Wheeler-space that correlates the spherical wave modes with the antenna performance. The isolation technologies with mutual coupling anti-resonances are unified by a single performance parameter to distinguish them from the more traditional isolation technologies. This unifying performance parameter is the group delay between two antennas where high group delay indicates the presence of a bandstop filter in the form of either a PCB or an antenna modification. This thesis analyzes both PCB and antenna modifications with high group-delay and demonstrates these types of antennas can be placed in close proximity without affecting other performance parameters. It is also shown that both the PCB and antenna modifications contain two isolation methods where each isolation method is a mirror complement of the other method. Some antenna geometries can also increase the mutual coupling in order to improve the antenna performance using a phenomena called over-coupling. These over-coupled antenna systems can result in lower SAR for the cellular antennas and decreased array sizes for NFC/RFID/wireless-power antennas, resulting in better performance of antennas inside mobile devices.

Zhu, Ming. "High-capacity communication systems using advanced optical and wireless technologies." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53525.

Full text
Abstract:
The increasing traffic demand from the use of 3G/4G, streaming, and other broadband wireless services exposes existing bottlenecks in the communications infrastructure and the coordination between the wireless network and its wired counterpart. While wireless systems are constantly evolving to newer generations and higher capacities, their supporting wired networks urgently require advancements in both architecture design and enabling technologies. New optical access systems specifically tailored for the unique natures of various wireless standards are investigated. This dissertation presents the design and experimental verification of high-capacity optical-wireless communication systems using advanced electrical and optical technologies. Technologies such as high level modulation and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) to increase the spectral efficiency is approaching the Shannon limit. New frequency bands with larger bandwidth are to be explored; for example, millimetre wave (mm-wave) spectrum range (30-300 GHz), especially the license-free spectrum located in 60 GHz. Although fiber-optic systems excel in the high-bandwidth core network, as bandwidth demand increases, more and more progress has been made towards the usage of fiber in the last mile. Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) technology has been proposed as a cost-effective optical access solution to support high-speed wireless communications, especially at the mm-wave band. Signal processing and coordination are centralized at the central office (CO), making the system economical and simple to build, operate, and maintain. Moreover, RoF systems are capable of delivering radio signals with different frequencies and protocols simultaneously. Therefore, the advantage of integrated fiber wireless systems leads to the first research topic of this dissertation: multi-band multi-service RoF systems. With an emphasis on the uniformity of the RoF platform that accommodates both legacy wireless services and advanced mm-wave services, the first part of the dissertation presents two schemes - analog all-band RoF and band-mapped 60-GHz RoF - to cover distinct application scenarios. In the all-band RoF access architecture, lower RF signals, such as Wi-Fi and cellular signals, and 60-GHz signal are transmitted at their original carrier frequencies for both indoor and outdoor coverages. On the other hand, the band-mapped mm-wave RoF scheme, fully utilizing the wide 7-GHz bandwidth at 60 GHz, delivers multiple converged high-speed services only through 60-GHz wireless link, which is especially suited for in-building broadband wireless access. The experimental verification of an all-band RoF system featuring relaxed component requirement is introduced, followed by a real-time multi-service demonstration in the proposed band-mapped 60-GHz RoF system. This dissertation also presents the design, analysis, and experimental demonstration of next-generation high-capacity cellular networks to keep up with the ever-growing bandwidth demand and performance requirements. New mobile backhaul (MBH) architectures based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) are proposed along with a simple and low-latency clock distribution and recovery scheme. The transmission of OFDMA signals in the dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) network with flexible clock rates and DSP-free clock recovery is implemented. Also, a spectrally-efficient, low-complexity clock distribution and recovery scheme for OFDMA-based MBH in coherent ultra-dense WDM (UDWDM) system is demonstrated. Finally, mobile fronthaul (MFH) architectures based on subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) technology, which significantly reduces the requirements on both the number of wavelengths per cell site and the optical bandwidth of the optical transceivers, are systematically investigated. Additionally, two upstream schemes, tailored for the uplink (UL), are introduced to maintain low complexity, and more importantly, to achieve high spectral efficiency by wavelength sharing. Therefore, Internet-access-oriented optical-wireless systems using Wi-Fi and other emerging mm-wave technologies are developed along with the optical fronthaul and backhaul for cellular networks in this dissertation. Moreover, with the proposed techniques, heterogeneous networks can be seamlessly provided even with different services, radio nodes, and performance requirements.

Abstract:

Market information and established communication between seller and buyer play an important role in business activities. This thesis investigates the Transkei area in the Eastern Cape
Province, South Africa to find out how to empower rural farmers by providing them with less-expensive mobile technology enabling them to post and advertise their produce, access market
information on a common database, and find and communicate with potential customers. The farmers&rsquo
requirements were identified using quantitative and qualitative methods and a prototype
consisting of USSD and web applications was developed. It allows the farmer to follow a sequence of menu commands to send a request to the database and access market information, such
as commodity prices, and post information about their own produce so as to attract more customers. The low cost of USSD and the ubiquity of mobile phones enable the system to be usable, affordable and effective. During the final stage of development, the system was tested successfully and addressed a major problem faced by farmers, i.e. lack of access to market information.

Peng, W. "Remote online machine condition monitoring using advanced internet, wireless and mobile communication technologies." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2011. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/288/.

Full text
Abstract:
A conceptual model with wireless and mobile techniques is developed in this thesis for remote real-time condition monitoring, which is applied for monitoring, diagnosing, and controlling the working conditions of machines. The model has the following major functions: data acquisition, data processing, decision making, and remote communication. The data acquisition module is built up within this model using the sensory technique and data I/O interfaces to acquire the working conditions data of a machine and extract the physical information about the machine (e.g. failure, wear, etc.) for data processing and decision making. The data processing is conducted using digital conversion and feature extraction to process the received analogue condition data and convert the data into the physical quantities of working condition of the machine for sequent fault diagnosis. A real-time fault diagnostic scheme for decision-making is applied based on digital filtering and pattern classification to real-time identify the fault symptom of the machine and provide advice for decision making for maintenance. Process control is implemented to control the operation status of the machine automatically, inform the maintenance personnel diagnostic results and alert the working conditions of the machine. Remote communication with wireless and mobile features greatly advance the machine’s condition monitoring technology with real-time fault diagnostic capacity, by providing a wireless-based platform to enable the implementation of data acquisition, real-time fault diagnosis, and decision making through the Internet, wireless, and mobile phone network. The model integrating above techniques and methods has been applied into the following three areas: (1) Development of a Remote Real-time Condition Monitoring System of Industrial Gearbox, supported by the Stimulation Innovation Success programme (2007-2008); (2) Development of a Remote Control System of Solid Desiccant Dehumidifier for Air Conditioning in Low Carbon Emission Buildings, supported by the Sustainable Construction iNET programme (2009-2010); (3) Development of an Innovative Remote Monitoring System of Thermo-Electric-Generations, supported by the Sustainable Construction iNET programme (2010-2011). The combination of wireless and mobile techniques with data acquisition, real-time fault diagnosis, and decision-making, into a model for remote real-time condition monitoring is a novel contribution to this area.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the perceptions of students about using mobile communication tools in web-based instruction. A mobile learning portal that can be used by different mobile devices was designed for this purpose. This portal included a mobile discussion forum and a course information system. Sixty undergraduate and five graduate students from METU/CEIT department used this portal as a supportive learning activity in three different courses throughout two-three, and four-week periods. The discussion subjects related to course content were created by instructors in these courses and students used this portal by sending messages or creating new subjects. Assignment results and announcements were inserted into the system by the instructors of these courses. A user evaluation instrument was developed by the researcher and validated by field experts. At the end of the study, perceptions of students were collected about mobile learning, mobile learning technologies and mobile discussion forums by using this instrument. Descriptive statistics were calculated according to the responses of students. The study results show that most of the students enjoyed using mobile technologies in education and they want to use mobile technologies in other courses. Although they like using mobile technologies, they did not increase the level of learning and motivation of the students much. Furthermore, mobile technologies did not increase the communication between students and between students and teachers despite their highly developed communication capabilities. Students could easily use the mobile technologies but small screen sizes and limited keypads hindered them from performing the operations. According to students, the cost of using mobile technologies is quite important whereas the data communication security is not important.

Abstract:
The mobile Internet could be a new technology helping the firm to improve productivity. But mobile Internet technology, now being widely deployed, still lacks broad usage. The author’s thesis: firms will use mobile Internet technology only if it improves their productivity. His argument reveals four questions: (1) How can the firm evaluate mobile Internet technology? (2) What determines the use in the perspective of the firm? (3) Do standards of implementation exist? (4) Are there business cases of mobile Internet technology use in the firm? These questions are being answered by a thorough observation of the firm’s practice

In recent years, South African universities have been faced with increased massification as a result of more students entering higher education institutions. Some of the students are from poor communities such as rural areas and former black townships which are still educationally disadvantaged. These students, who have been described as ‘digital strangers’ in other studies, have had very little access to or had never used computers prior to university. With increased computerisation in higher education institutions, digital strangers face problems integrating into computer based learning. In contrast to computer access, mobile phone ownership is pervasive and ownership is not socially differentiated in the South African context. This study therefore sought to explore the use of mobile phones to support learning by first year female science students in an extended academic program at the University of Cape Town. Using critical theory, Gee’s notions of Big (D) and little (d) discourses and a qualitative case study methodology, the study examined student’s technological identities. Whilst the results of the study show the powerlessness that digital strangers feel when exposed to computers during their first year of study, the results also show that students identify with their mobile phones because the technology is part of their Discourse. The mobile phone provides emancipation and empowerment that the students need to survive in a challenging science fields through informal and affective learning necessitated by the various internet enabled applications of the technology. The study also showed that students found transferable skills from their mobile phones to computers, thereby enhancing their transition into computer based learning. The study recommends that higher education institutions should consider mobile phones as viable learning tools and the technology should not be regarded as separate from the computer, but rather the two should be viewed as complimentary educational tools.

Transactional distance (TD) theory argues that psychological and communications barriers have the potential of creating misunderstandings in any formation of learning contexts. Distance education is seen as providing both opportunities and challenges. The distance programme being studied has experienced high deferment rates. However, the lack of communication infrastructural challenges and specifically lack of interaction is one major challenge hindering reduction of TD for remotely dispersed distance learners. It has become evident that WhatsApp popularity has risen; one unique feature is its affordance to enhance communication within a group. Hence, WhatsApp group was used to enhance interactions, as well as nurturing social engagement that creates dialogue and sharing amongst a virtual group. This study was aimed at enhancing dialogue as a potential of reducing TD amongst distance students for purposes of improving their study experiences. This study set out to explore how Salmon's (2000) 5-stage Model could be used as one way of implementing a mobile-mediated WhatsApp group activity as an opportunity to reduce TD. Six pre-service teachers participated in the WhatsApp mediated group activity virtually to try and find out how implementing a WhatsApp group activity could enhance dialogue consequently reduce TD.

Either « developed », « emerging » or « developing », every society is under the IT influence. Among all these technologies is the mobile phone, which through its strong growth, is a challenge both for sociability studies and IT technologies uses studies. This thesis, whose central theme is devoted to NTIC in Morocco and in particular on the mobile phone, aims for exploring, through three parts divided in chapters, the direct or indirect connection existing between the use of the mobile phone and other phenomenons. This study is intended to give parts of answers to the reasons of the strong interest the Moroccan population takes in owning this media and analyse its distribution process as a technological innovation in this society. The most significant part of our study is the surveys carried out in Morocco and France. This field research makes the link between two areas in Morocco and two others in France regarding the MRE1. So, through this contribution, we detect, after the analysis of the surveys, that the use of the Mobile phone does not only result from technologies but definitely issues from multidisciplinary behaviours. It does not only rely on age, sex or social and occupational criteria but calls for the notion of «homo situs», notion which sends back to the black box, made of the the culture, language, religion and tradition of the user

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
The micro-enterprise sector, although associated with mostly informal businesses, shows promise of potential and transitioning to more formal businesses. With this in mind, the South African government recognizes that prioritized sectorial development is needed to stimulate growth particularly in the micro-enterprise sector. Considering that evidence reveals growth and development in small business practices being closely related to the use of different forms of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), if and when strategically applied. Therefore recognizing the importance of ICTs the South African government has embarked on various technology related initiatives to facilitate needed growth and development. Despite this, entrepreneurs in the micro-enterprise sector demonstrate a low uptake of ICTs for their business operations, including the use of mobile technologies which are the most common form of ICTs available to micro- entrepreneurs. Many previous studies have investigated the adoption and use of mobile technologies in the microenterprise sector, but despite this a low uptake of mobile technologies still exists. For this reason, this study investigates and empirically determines the factors influencing the adoption and use of mobile applications for micro-enterprise operations in South Africa, using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model as a lens. The research population comprised a group of micro-entrepreneurs who all are users of a common mobile application (mentorship-movement application). The main aim of the investigation was to determine (i) the factors influencing the adoption and use of mobile applications for micro- enterprise operation, (ii) if the experience gained and their satisfaction associated with using the mentorship-movement application will influence their behavioural intention to use other mobile applications for business. The study was conducted objectively and used hypothesis testing as the means of investigation. Data was collected through the use of a survey questionnaire. The findings of the study indicate that ii | P a g e performance expectancy and effort expectancy positively influences the micro-entrepreneurs behavioural intention to adopt and use mobile applications for micro-enterprise operations. The findings also observed that social influence has no impact on the micro- entrepreneurs’ behavioural intention to adopt and use mobile applications for business. Facilitating conditions and behavioural intention were found to positively influence the use behaviour of the micro-entrepreneurs when it comes to adoption and use of mobile applications for business. Moreover, the findings confirmed that experience and satisfaction in using one mobile application does not influence the behavioural intention of the micro-entrepreneurs to use other mobile applications for business. The factors which have been found to bear influence on the adoption and use of mobile applications amongst micro-entrepreneurs in South Africa have implications for both policy and practice. In particular, the findings of this study may be used to inform the design of the various programmatic interventions which seek to improve outcomes of the micro-entrepreneur sector. This includes interventions by the Department of Small Business Development and that of the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA).

Abstract:
Are mobile phones the best vehicle for reducing gender inequality in the developing world? ICT experts champion the use of mobile phones to improve women’s lives, and various stakeholders have invested millions of dollars to launch mobile phone programs for women. Yet, given high female illiteracy rates, patriarchal societies, and other structural and cultural barriers in developing countries, many scholars contend that limited access to ICTs can perpetuate gender inequality. Rooted in the theory that women’s empowerment and equality are inseparable and necessary components for the realization of sustainable economic and social development, this paper aims to determine if stakeholders are jumping on the mobile phone bandwagon too soon by using a multivariate regression of cross national data to demonstrate whether or not mobile phones fall short of advancing women at the same rate that men develop.

Abstract:
The research conducted as part of our thesis aims at looking into the construction of the utterance of male homosexuality putting forward comparative analysis of recent times. Our concern is communication medium (media environment and digital technologies) as well as the different forms of speaking. Our thesis is organized around three parts. The first part consists in highlighting the context and the characteristics about telling homosexuality. We will suggest to revisit Michel Foucault’s work (through his work La volonté de savoir – The will to know) in order to study the implementation of the discourse about sex and then the construction of sexualities. It is also a question of identifying the variations of the self-ascription from the logic of secret to a protest or even subversive form of logic through different times, with the evocation of the place and the different aspects of “coming out”. In a second part, we will explain the different legacies of the ways to express homosexuality. We will then mention the different ways to represent male homosexuality in films, television and in web series through a linear and genealogical basis from the 1930’s until today. We will next review the practice of cruising according to open or closed areas: this will lead us to question the existence of the liberation of expressive forms. Finally, in a third and last part, we will put forward, from the mobile phone application Grindr, the identification of the different features of the cruiser as well as his roaming in a geo-tracking world. We will discuss more precisely the status and the relationship to image, the identification of the different types of views organized through the applications and the stakes and consequences as part of the utterance of homosexuality

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of mobile telephony in rural communities in Papua New Guinea (PNG). It is a threshold study which reports on research conducted in the earliest stages of mobile phone adoption in these areas. It explores the ways in which this new technology changes people’s lives, social structures and relationships. The research focuses on non-urban communities, which previously had little or no access to modern communication technologies, but which are in some cases still using traditional forms of communication such as drums. It has found that the introduction of mobile telecommunications has generally been viewed positively, although several negative concerns have been strongly felt. Specific benefits related to enhanced communication with relatives and friends living away from home villages, and use of the technology in time-critical emergencies or crises. Difficulties have arisen with respect to the cost of owning and operating a handset, as well as financial and logistical challenges when recharging handset batteries, particularly in areas with no mains electricity supply. Perceived damaging effects of mobile phone access related to sex, crime and pornography. The changes taking place are described through a social lens, by foregrounding the perceptions of villagers. The perspectives of key informants, such as telecommunication company managers, are also discussed. Employing the technique of triangulation (using different methods and sources) has helped to validate the findings of the research project. The sources constantly overlap and agree on the main themes, such as those outlined above. PNG is a developing country which performs poorly on a wide range of development indicators. A large majority of the people live outside of the major towns and cities. It is therefore worthwhile investigating the introduction of mobile phone technology in rural areas. These areas often have poor access to services, including transport, health, education and banking. Until 2007, communities in such regions fell outside of mobile phone coverage areas. In the case of all ten villages discussed in this thesis, there has never been any landline telephone infrastructure available. Therefore, this research on mobile phones is in effect documenting the first ever access to any kind of phone in these communities. This research makes a unique contribution to knowledge about the role of communication in PNG, and has implications for policy, practice and theory. In the policy arena, the thesis aids understanding of the impact which communication sector competition and regulation can have on rural and relatively isolated communities. There are three practical problems which have emerged from the research: cost, battery recharging difficulties and breakage are all major obstacles to uptake and use of mobile telephony in rural communities. Efforts to reduce usage costs, enable easier recharging, and design more robust handsets would allow for increased utilisation of mobile phones for a range of purposes. With respect to the realm of theory, this research sits amongst the most recent scholarship in the mobile phone field, located within the broader communication theory area. It recommends cautionary reading of any literature which suggests that mobile phones will reduce poverty and increase incomes in poor, rural communities in developing countries. Nonetheless, the present research adds weight to mobile phone studies which suggest that the primary advantages of mobile phones in such settings are for the satisfactions of communication of itself, and for social interaction among loved ones.

Abstract:
The generalization of the use of the mobile phone in Africa and Gabon in specific is a reality. It is a behavior with no precedent. It thus raises the question of information technologies and new forms of communication. This in turn invokes the issue of "information era". In this effervescence for mobile telephony, many questions deserve to be posed. Undoubtedly the most significant one is: why this passion? With a critical analysis of this question on realizes that currently this technological developpement doesn't have any importance at least from an economic standpoint. Despite the lack of economic evolution, there is an increasing usage of mobile pones in Gabon. Thus we treat people' attachment to the mobile phones as a need of communication. That being the lesson which one can learn from the generalized establishment of the mobile phones in Africa and in Gabon in particular, one can look at mobile phone usage in terms of interpersonal relations and social relations

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to capture the potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs), specifically mobile phones in Africa to alleviate the living conditions and empower households in rural areas, particularly in Sub-SaharaAfrica through information dissemination, rent redistribution, and financial inclusiveness. As the last developed continent, Africa suffers from poverty, lack of essential infrastructure, famine problems, the highest illiteracy rates, and limited access to financial services, so International organizations such as the World Bank argues that the expansion of mobile telephony adoption represents an opportunity to overcome some of Africa’s obstacles through innovative uses in the rural world, which suffers more from physical barriers. We focus on assessing the impact of the innovative uses of mobile phone services in the agricultural sector where I will draw conclusions on mobile phone services’ benefits, quantify them, and advise public and private authorities and organizations to set up suitable services to the populations’ needs

This thesis has taken part as an experimental development within the Learning Ecology through Science with Global Outcomes project. It introduces the area of cross platform mobile application development and provides a possible solution for tackling the current fragmentation of mobile devices and platforms for data collection. During the process, a mobile data collection prototype was designed, implemented and deployed on Android, iOS and Windows Mango by using standards and web standards such as HTML5, CSS3, XForms and JavaScript. The deployed prototype was then tested with users in order to collect the necessary data to help answer the questions that were formulated. The results indicate an ease of use of the prototype in relation to cross platform development and also shows potential benefits such as less code and time. Cross platform development provides a way to counteract the current fragmentation between mobile platforms.

Abstract:
In recent years, progress made in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) has stimulated social and economic globalization, leading to the development of an information society. Widespread campaigns around that society advocated the need and even the urgency for African countries to use these technologies to reach the expected level of development of which the nation Mali is not an exception. In that area telecommunications and affiliated strategies oriented towards universal access play an important role. However, technological advances are involved in the atomization of society especially broadening the gap between men and women. Moreover, stakeholders are concerned by this situation, especially since, according to the United Nations, the lack of access to ICTs is the third crucial challenge for women after poverty and violence. Therefore, the consideration of gender issues and women integration in ICTs and development become more important despite the constraints and the gap between what is said and what is done. This work focuses on issues that include the use of technologies such as mobile phones by Malian women in an environment whereby tradition and modernity tackle each other. In other words, this study analyses how mobile phones, the new practices and transformations it brings in, fit in the daily life of Malian business women

New technologies such as GPS, sensors and ubiquitous computing are pervading our society. The movement of people and vehicles may be sensed and recorded, thus producing large volumes of mobility data. The state-of-the-art database management systems fail to handle such complex data and their processing. This thesis addresses the problem of managing mobile location sensor data. We analyze the limitations of existing work in modeling, querying and indexing moving objects with sensors on road networks. Then, we propose new solutions to deal with these limitations. The main contributions of the thesis are a data model and a query language for moving sensor data, and an access method for in-network trajectories of moving objects. Abstract:
Agriculture is central to the economy of Kenya, but as the population dependent on the same land grows, farmers have been compelled to develop more intensive practices to produce similar yields as in the past. Investments in agricultural research and technology facilitate this intensification and have historically resulted in substantial gains. However, efforts to promote effective transfer of new technologies and methodologies have been stifled by financial challenges to traditional agricultural extension delivery approaches. Extension services involve significant face-to-face contact in farmer fields, through farmer field schools, or at regional events. However with rising costs, the demand for more mobile and adaptable mediums is apparent. This study examines the potential for new methods of knowledge and technology transfer and diffusion of innovation within Kenya, most notably the use of mobile phone services. In order to frame the potential of such services, a national level macro-econometric analysis was undertaken to assess the effects of investments in agricultural research on agricultural gross domestic product. These results were then overlaid on an analysis of 14 case studies examining the effects and challenges of agricultural extension in East Africa. Three potential services, Awaaz De, FarmFox, and Community Knowledge Workers (CKW), were then assessed on a capabilities standard in the context of the rise of the mobile communication markets in Kenya for potential application to extension services. The results indicate that agricultural research is strongly correlated with growth in agricultural GDP and that effective extension services have strongly facilitated that in the past. However, limited flexibility, lack of farmer input, and high costs limit that potential contribution to growth. Mobile communication services may be part of the solution; capabilities of Awaaz De, FarmFox, and CKW are promising, but further research is needed to accurately recommend a service for Kenya’s extension services.

Abstract:
DIGITAL BOUNDARIES explores the notion of how ICTs and mobile devices can influence the social programming, spatial conditions and construction of public architecture. This topic is derived from the study of Urban Informatics which looks at three key actors: people, place and technology. This can be seen in South Africa where many young individuals inhabit public buildings in the urban environment purely to be connected to wireless internet through their mobile devices. This is done so that they are able to do research for studies, look for job opportunities or socialise. This digital infrastructure then becomes an important aspect of the public realm, not only for personal benefit and need, but for attracting people to place. Situated in the Nyanga Junction precinct south of Gugulethu, the architectural proposition looks at adding digital infrastructure to this complex precinct in the informal area of Cape Town through three scales of architecture; small, medium and large. The small scale is that of Wi-Fi hotspots at street level embedded within the informal market at ten strategically located sites. The medium scale interventions are upgrades to four existing trade posts elevated above at first floor level. Lastly the large scale which is of catalytic and institutional architecture at two proposed sites, of which one is the main architectural focus of the design dissertation and explored further. The architectural programme provides spaces for: IT learning and skills development to help individuals seek employment, collaborative hubs for those developing new entrepreneurial ideas, and youth hubs for students to study and socialise. These three scales and their locality have been informed by social thresholds developed through the theory and technology studies that have been influential in the urban strategy of the design dissertation. It has created a framework for digital infrastructure to be implemented that will help enhance the public realm for a safer and more conducive urban environment.

Abstract:

The purpose is to provide continuous and optimal multicast delivery to multicast members that change regularly their point of attachment from one IP network to another. On one hand, the receiver mobility introduces new issues conceming the question of membership latency, multicast session interruption, packet loss and optimal routing. On the other hand, the source mobility must be considered because it raises a number of new challenges such as source identification, reconstruction of the multicast tree and session interruption due to the handover. Our first contribution is the definition of a taxonomy that is used to describe the main challenges of mobile multicast receivers and mobile multicast sources and the comparison of existing solutions. Our second contribution is the proposition of two solutions to enhance the support of mobile receivers. The first solution optimizes the Mobile IP signalling by avoiding unnecessary signalling traffic between mobile receiver and multicast source induced by binding update mechanism. The second solution introduces a new multicast proxy entity in Mobile IP home networks to optimize the multicast delivery path between mobile receivers and their correspondent home agents. Finally, we propose a new solution to handle transparently source mobility by reducing the multicast routing state change and avoiding the reconstruction of the multicast delivery tree. The performance of our solutions is evaluated by simulation. We conclude this dissertation with a prospective architecture for Mobile IP that uses multiple home agents and a number of future works identified during this study

Abstract:
Our work is divided in three studies : a qualitative study and an ethnographic observation allow us to confront the usage of mobile communication in the Parisian metropolitan and to see how sociability thresholds are built through mobile telephone. The studies analyse the "residential" uses and the users connexion strategies. A third study, focusing on the management and running of the Saint-Marcel station, accounts for the modifications of strategy and users reception on the entire underground network expected to happen in the next few years. This is done, through an exhaustive presentation of the components of that particular station. The presentation allows us to define how the relationships between public, private and virtual spaces come together and to question the setup of technical and human components around four imperatives: to secure, to inform, to supervise and to punish

Abstract:
Establishing a supervisory infrastructure allows a better smart management than an expensive strengthening of distribution network to respond to new constraints at the energies control (Consumption, REN, EV ...). To transmit data, Power Line Communication (PLC) technologies present an advantage in this context. In fact, it enables a superposition of High Frequency (HF) signals on electrical signal 50/60 Hz. However, electric networks have not been developed to this application because of difficult propagation conditions. This research work makes a contribution to develop a simulation platform in objective to transmit data to 1 MHz. In first time, each network element is studied singly and in second time, together, to estimate "Outdoor PLC" transmission performance. The first element studied is the networks variation in function of frequency and time. Several 24h disturbance measurements on LV customers are presented. The second element is the transformers which established connection between Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV). The proposed modeling method is based on a "lumped model" and a "black box model". These models are applied to a 100 kVA H61 transformer most commonly used by French distribution system operator in rural and suburban networks. The third element is the power line used in MV and LV networks. The proposed modeling method is based on a "cascaded model" from the theory of transmission line. This model is applied to one power line used in LV underground network. Each model is obtained from various impedance measurements. To complete, an introductory study on mobile radio communication is performed to remote network distribution

Abstract:
According to the cultural contexts types, which are strategic planning’s and which are modeling’s of the appropriation of communication and information technologies? Are mobile phone devices resulting from a culture from globalization? These two starting questions can be summarized by another: which is the reason of the success of cellular in spite of antagonisms and the cultural affiliations? It results from the fast report that we will specify later on, wl1o makes that more than three huma11 out of four on the world are mobile phone users. This product became totally global; either from West to East or from the South in North. The initial vision of technology is different from the current use. Adoption of innovation models are called into question and are characterized well by the relative advantage, compatibility complexity, experimentability, observability. The ambivalence of marketing concept in the case of the mobiles is an element specified in this thesis in parallel with the consumer behavior and its levels: needs, desires, waitings, requests. The cellular one creates new standards material, spiritual, intellectual and emotional such as for example the dependence. This object becomes, through the Agamben meaning, located inside globalization. It defines new behaviors, new uses and new power relations. The mobile phone is an element of the identity of each user

Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages. Hypermedia for Language Learning))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The high penetration rate of mobile devices all over the world, and especially in South Africa, has significantly increased the relevance of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). The objective of this study is to ascertain the viability of incorporating MALL technology to enhance the language learning experience of South African university students who are studying a foreign language. The students enrolled for the beginners’ German course at Stellenbosch University served as participants in this study, and surveys and interviews were used to establish their exposure to mobile devices, as well as their experiences in relation to the incorporation of Short Messages Service (SMS) into their German course. The results indicate that although the vast majority of students are mobile device owners, only a few students will embrace the idea of using these devices to improve their language skills without any incentive. Without constant motivation and encouragement to use mobile technologies, and the willingness from everybody involved in both teaching and learning a foreign language, mobile technology as a support structure cannot be implemented successfully.

Abstract:
The usage of the mobile Internet has increased tremendously within the last couple of years, and thereby the vision of accessing information anytime, anywhere has become more realistic and a dominant design principle for providing content. However, this study challenges this paradigm of unlimited and unrestricted access, and explores the question whether constraints and restrictions can positively influence the motivation and enticement of mobile users to engage with location-specific content. Restrictions, such as a particular time or location that gives a user access to content, may be used to foster participation and engagement, as well as to support content production and to enhance the user’s experience. In order to explore this, a Mobile Narrative and a Narrative Map have been created. For the former, the access to individual chapters of the story was restricted. Authors can specify constraints, such as a location or time, which need to be met by the reader if they want to read the story. This concept allows creative writers of the story to exploit the fact that the reader’s context is known, by intensifying the user experience and integrating this knowledge into the writing process. The latter, the Narrative Map, provides users with extracts from stories or information snippets about authors at relevant locations. In both concepts, a feedback channel was also integrated, on which location, time, and size constraints were imposed. In a user-centred design process involving authors and potential readers, those concepts have been implemented, followed by an evaluation comprising four user studies. The results show that restrictions and constraints can indeed lead to more enticing and engaging user experiences, and restricted contribution opportunities can lead to a higher motivation to participate as well as to an improved quality of submissions. These findings are relevant for future developments in the area of mobile narratives and creative writing, as well as for common mobile services that aim for enticing user experiences.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fog computing is a promising approach in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) as it provides functionality and resources at the edge of the network, closer to end users. This thesis studies the performance of fog computing in the context of latency sensitive IoT applications. The first issue addressed is the mathematical modeling of an IoT-fogcloud system, and the performance metrics of the system in terms of energy consumed and latency. This modeling will then allow us to propose various effective strategies for content distribution and resource allocation in the fog and the cloud. The second issue addressed in this thesis concerns the distribution of content and object data in fog / cloud systems. In order to simultaneously optimize offloading and system resource allocation decisions, we distinguish between two types of IoT applications: (1) IoT applications with static content or with infrequent updates; and (2) IoT applications with dynamic content. For each type of application, we study the problem of offloading IoT requests in the fog. We focus on load balancing issues to minimize latency and the total power consumed by the system

Abstract:
In the post-industrial era, of the knowledge economy and knowledge; socio-economic activity in Africa is characterized by the informal sector in which the craft plays a meaningful role. Can craftsmen which activity is essentially manual, adapt themselves in new tools of modern communication? What do they use ICTs including mobile phones and the Internet? What representations do they have of these tools? Are they mere consumers of ICTs or can they play an important role in the design of communication tools adapted to their socio-economic environment? This research attempts to answer these questions through a study of practices of mobile phones and the Internet with two types of craftspeople: those common goods producers, mainly located in urban areas and those working in the mine, largely located in rural regions, where problems of infrastructure shortages are most critical. The main theoretical sources are those of sociology and anthropology uses of technology. Emphasizing a constructivist approach and having as main hypothesis adaptability of ICTs to crafts and craftsmen to ICTs, this discussion explores the uses of mobile phones and the Internet by the craftsmen, and their possible contributions to the design ICTs to meet their needs. Of socio-demographic variables crossed with uses of the functionality of mobile phone and Internet, appear fun, utility, and craft-oriented development practices. The contribution of our research in information and communication sciences is in the update of flows and communication needs in the craft sector, real, imagined, and desired uses of ICTs, including mobile phone and Internet, that can be integrated into the design of communication tools

The research focuses on the acceptance of new technologies within the telecommunications industry. The study examines three models namely Innovation theory, Theory of Reason Action (TRA), and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This study explores the technology acceptance models in order to explain why certain monitoring officers at ICASA would prefer specific technologies over others. Models of interest could be the innovation theory, TRA and TAM. After reviewing both models, the author will examine the TAM in detail as a model of interest in this study. In turn, this model is expected to assist us to understand why monitoring officer's at ICASA would prefer a particular frequency monitoring technology over the other.
