Recent trends in wireless communication systems show a significant demand for the delivery of multimedia services and applications over mobile networks - mobile multimedia - like video telephony, multimedia messaging, mobile gaming, interactive and streaming video, etc. However, despite the ongoing development of key communication technologies that support these applications, the communication resources and bandwidth available to wireless/mobile radio systems are often severely limited. It is well known, that these bottlenecks are inherently due to the processing capabilities of mobile transmission systems, and the time-varying nature of wireless channel conditions and propagation environments. Therefore, new ways of processing and transmitting multimedia data over mobile radio channels have become essential which is the principal focus of this thesis. In this work, the performance and suitability of various signal processing techniques and transmission strategies in the application of multimedia data over wireless/mobile radio links are investigated. The proposed transmission systems for multimedia communication employ different data encoding schemes which include source coding in the wavelet domain, transmit diversity coding (space-time coding), and adaptive antenna beamforming (eigenbeamforming). By integrating these techniques into a robust communication system, the quality (SNR, etc) of multimedia signals received on mobile devices is maximised while mitigating the fast fading and multi-path effects of mobile channels. To support the transmission of high data-rate multimedia applications, a well known multi-carrier transmission technology known as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been implemented. As shown in this study, this results in significant performance gains when combined with other signal-processing techniques such as spa ce-time block coding (STBC). To optimise signal transmission, a novel unequal adaptive modulation scheme for the communication of multimedia data over MIMO-OFDM systems has been proposed. In this system, discrete wavelet transform/subband coding is used to compress data into their respective low-frequency and high-frequency components. Unlike traditional methods, however, data representing the low-frequency data are processed and modulated separately as they are more sensitive to the distortion effects of mobile radio channels. To make use of a desirable subchannel state, such that the quality (SNR) of the multimedia data recovered at the receiver is optimized, we employ a lookup matrix-adaptive bit and power allocation (LM-ABPA) algorithm. Apart from improving the spectral efficiency of OFDM, the modified LM-ABPA scheme, sorts and allocates subcarriers with the highest SNR to low-frequency data and the remaining to the least important data. To maintain a target system SNR, the LM-ABPA loading scheme assigns appropriate signal constella tion sizes and transmit power levels (modulation type) across all subcarriers and is adapted to the varying channel conditions such that the average system error-rate (SER/BER) is minimised. When configured for a constant data-rate load, simulation results show significant performance gains over non-adaptive systems. In addition to the above studies, the simulation framework developed in this work is applied to investigate the performance of other signal processing techniques for multimedia communication such as blind channel equalization, and to examine the effectiveness of a secure communication system based on a logistic chaotic generator (LCG) for chaos shift-keying (CSK).

Abstract:
Different parts of source encoded multimedia streams such as those associated with standard image or video formats possess different levels of importance with respect to their contribution to the quality of the reconstructed image or video. This unequal importance among data within a codestream gives rise to preferential treatment of the more significant parts of the codestream compared to the less important parts. Similarly, visual information offered by certain regions of an image or video may attract viewer’s attention more than other parts of the viewing area. As a consequence, preferential treatment of important data and information can play a vital role in mobile multimedia services in order to preserve satisfactory quality of service under the harsh conditions of a band-limited, error-prone wireless channel. In this thesis, we therefore, investigate how preferential coding can be used to protect multimedia services more efficiently against transmission errors. For this purpose, an error sensitivity analysis of the specific application is utilized as a basis to design efficient unequal error protection (UEP) schemes. The performance of the proposed preferential coding schemes is evaluated using objective perceptual quality metrics in order to account for the fact that humans are the ultimate judges of service quality. The thesis is divided into four parts. In the first part, region of interest (ROI) identification, coding and advantages of ROI coding for different applications are investigated. In addition, a framework is proposed for using ROI coding in wireless imaging. The second part analyses the error sensitivity of wireless JPEG2000 (JPWL) in terms of perceptual quality metrics. It is also shown that using reduced- reference perceptual quality metrics as error sensitivity descriptor (ESD) in JPWL increases the effectiveness of ESD. Specifically, this type of metrics correlates well with subjective quality assessment and provides an additional estimate for the obtained quality. In the third part, two UEP schemes for JPWL are proposed and compared with equal error protection (EEP). Their performance is evaluated in terms of perceptual quality metrics such as structural similarity index and the visual information fidelity criterion of the reconstructed image and their benefit over EEP is revealed. Finally, in the fourth part, a framework for optimized preferential coding of ROI based images and videos is proposed. Specifically, a dynamic programming algorithm for optimal parity distribution is provided.

Abstract:
This thesis describes several concepts associated with the transmission of multimedia services over mobile radio access networks. The error performance and traffic requirements of real-time video transmission over the General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) access network and its successor Enhanced-GPRS is examined. In view of this. video error resilience techniques which exploit channel prioritisation mechanisms are introduced with a view to increasing the robustness of received video sequences encoded with MPEG-4 to channel errors. These include stream prioritisation using unequal error protection and region-of-interest prioritisation for use in multiparty communications and streaming applications. A new forward-error correction scheme for EGPRS which uses iterative serially-concatenated convolutional-Reed Solomon codes is designed and is shown to significantly enhance the error performance for real-time services. A study of (he use of backward error correction mechanisms when transmitting streaming multimedia services is carried out, and a new retransmission scheme is introduced to increase the capacity of the radio access network when supporting streaming services

Abstract:
The use of Internet Protocol (IP) based mobile wireless transmission is increasing as novel multimedia applications are being deployed. Mobile wireless channels and IP based communications are inherently prone to errors and packet losses. Error resilience features and Forward Error Correction (FEC) at the application layer (AL) are often used to protect the video data against losses. The amount of redundancy added by the FEC attempts to counter the worst channel Signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) but the protection generally comes at a high complexity and overhead. It is thus imperative to design FEC solutions which are adaptive to the varying wireless channel conditions, i.e., bandwidth and packet loss rate. This adaptive behaviour becomes even more important for transmission to heterogeneous receivers. Fountain codes are rateless codes which can be used to potentially generate an unlimited number of encoded packets from a limited number of source packets. The decoding is possi ble if the number of received encoded packets at the receiver is just a little more than the source packets. As each portion of encoded video data does not have equal importance for the video re-construction, this characteristic can also be advantageously exploited while designing FEC solutions by providing more protection to important portions. Random linear codes (RLC) based schemes have been compared with Raptor codes, and RLC solution is proposed for the mobile television broadcasting standards like Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) and DVB-T2 (Second Generation Terrestrial). A reliable unicast video communication solution based on Luby Transform (LT) codes is proposed by exploiting unequal error protection (UEP) for encoded video data partitioned with the Data partitioning (DP) and slicing feature of H264/AVC. A comparison of layered video data transmission with Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay collaboration strategies is provided. A novel scheme for multiple description coding (MDC) has been proposed and its advantages highlighted through simulations over relay based multi hop channels, like Long Term Evolution- Advanced (LTE-A). An algorithm has been proposed which takes into account the PSNR contribution and temporal significance of each slice to prioritize H.264/AVC sliced video data. The simulation results with systematic RLC show the usefulness of the proposed scheme for applications such as video-on-demand (VoD).

Today, it has become conveniently possible to host Web Services (WS) on mobile node using a Mobile Web Server (MWS). To address a vast range of use cases, these hosted mobileWS may be implemented to offer synchronous and asynchronous execution styles depending upon the requirements of mobile application. Thus, the MWS actually provides the necessary architectural capabilities to handle and process incoming requests for each class of service. But, it is very vital for these servers to simplify the service access and creation mechanisms, so that, the processing overheads on the hosting node are reduced. Previously, research has shown promising optimizations in MWSprocessing by using theREST architecture style for service access and creation. However, the mobile WSoffered by the existingMWSusesXML based payload for information exchange, which restricts the incorporation of the rich multimedia content, such as, audio and video data. As a consequence, the true potential of the REST -based server architecture is not utilized. This thesis addresses architectural and transport layer issues to enable the exchange of rich multimedia content between mobile nodes using mobile WS over the live wireless data networks. The research work is focused on the implementation of multimedia streaming protocol standards, such as, the RTSPand theRTP, into the existingREST-basedMWS architecture. Also, to enable the controlled Mobile-to-Mobile (M2M) media streaming capabilities, the thesis uses both TCP and UDP as transport layer protocols for signaling and data transmission, respectively. The control functions are implemented by mapping the synchronous and asynchronous mobile WS to the RTSPmethods. The implementation extends the states of the asynchronous mobileWS to offer these multimedia control functions. The issues related to the firewalls and Network Address Translation (NAT) are addressed by the development of an Intermediate Access Gateway (IAG),which offers the functionality based on the STUNandTURN concepts. This work enables mobile WS basedM2M media streaming either through the directly established connection with the peers, or via the IAG. Thus, the developed proof-of-concept prototype demonstrates the streaming capabilities of the extended MWS architecture over any wireless data networks.

Abstract:
People like to consume multimedia content on mobile devices. Mobile networks can deliver mobile TV services but they require large infrastructural investments and their operators need to make trade-offs to design worthwhile experiences. The approximation of how users experience networked services has shifted from the inadequate packet level Quality of Service (QoS) to the user perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) that includes content, user context and their expectations. However, QoE is lacking concrete operationalizations for the visual experience of content on small, sub-TV resolution screens displaying transcoded TV content at low bitrates. The contribution of my thesis includes both substantive and methodological results on which factors contribute to the QoE in mobile multimedia services and how. I utilised a mix of methods in both lab and field settings to assess the visual experience of multimedia content on mobile devices. This included qualitative elicitation techniques such as 14 focus groups and 75 hours of debrief interviews in six experimental studies. 343 participants watched 140 hours of realistic TV content and provided feedback through quantitative measures such as acceptability, preferences and eye-tracking. My substantive findings on the effects of size, resolution, text quality and shot types can improve multimedia models. My substantive findings show that people want to watch mobile TV at a relative size (at least 4cm of screen height) similar to living room TV setups. In order to achieve these sizes at 35cm viewing distance users require at least QCIF resolution and are willing to scale it to a much lower angular resolution (12ppd) then what video quality research has found to be the best visual quality (35ppd). My methodological findings suggest that future multimedia QoE research should use a mixed methods approach including qualitative feedback and viewing ratios akin to living room setups to meet QoE’s ambitious scope.

The continued improvement of transistor performance has increased the limit on the peak energy-efficiency of wireless transmitters. Nevertheless, the average efficiency with mobile multimedia communication is decreasing due to escalating design requirements on linearity and bandwidth. Therefore there is an increasing gap between the peak and average efficiency. Furthermore, the nature of user mobility mandates reliability over environmental changes and device aging. To address these two pervasive issues of efficiency and reliability, we pursue solutions at both the architectural and algorithmic level. This thesis proposes energy-efficient wireless transmitter architectures that also improve transmitter reliability. First, mobile adaptive predistortion to improve transmitter reliability is presented. Second, parallel segmented modulation (PSM) to improve average efficiency is introduced. A prototype PSM transmitter chip for gigabit Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11ac VHT160 standard) is designed, which integrates a watt-level switching RF power amplifier and a subsampling observation receiver for low-power adaptive predistortion.

Abstract:
Representation of multimedia requires large amounts of data. Therefore, multimedia source signals are compressed to reduce the data rate that would otherwise be required for its transmission. However, compression renders multimedia data more vulnerable to transmission errors. Therefore, error protection is needed when transmitting multimedia to mobile users over wireless channels. As channel coding adds parity symbols to the data for error protection, which in turn increases transmission data rate, efficient utilization of this added parity budget becomes a key for insuring quality of service for mobile multimedia. Computing the optimal parity allocation among packets of a multimedia stream may not be possible in realtime due to the huge number of ways the parity can be assigned to these packets. Therefore, it is important to design powerful error protection schemes while imposing low computational and memory demands on the system. This is particularly true for systems having limited resources, such as mobile handheld devices. Given that human beings are the final judges on the quality of multimedia services, it will also be beneficial to use perceptual quality metrics that correlate well with human perception when evaluating different error protection schemes. In this work, we have considered the above aspects when designing error protection for mobile multimedia: Providing near optimal performance while keeping complexity low; designing and evaluating of error protection schemes based on perceptual quality metrics. The thesis is divided into five parts. In the first part, region of interest (ROI) identification, coding and advantages of ROI coding are investigated. In addition, a framework is proposed for using ROI coding in wireless imaging. The second part provides a number of unequal error protection (UEP) schemes for wireless imaging ranging from very simple and less efficient equal error protection to very complex yet optimal error protection. The proposed error protection schemes provide an excellent trade-off between performance and omplexity. In the third part, a framework for perception-based error protection of images and video streams is proposed. This framework is based on the fact that the human visual system is more sensitive to quality degradation in the ROI compared to the background. The proposed error protection scheme provides excellent performance. Part four deals with realtime systems and/or systems having limited memory and processing resources. Specifically, an UEP is proposed for wireless imaging systems which provides near optimal performance and puts very low processing/memory demands on the systems. Finally, in the fifth part, optimal UEP is analyzed. Based on the analysis, optimal UEP is modeled using several mathematical models. Each of the considered models is evaluated for its fitness in providing error protection. The simulation results show that most of the investigated models give excellent performance.

Abstract:
The research reported in this thesis explores issues of information design for mobile devices, in particular those relating to selection and presentation of on-screen information and interactive functionality for users of mobile phones. The example domain is that of mobile tour guides for tourists, local people, students and families. Central to the research is the issue of multimodality, particularly the graphic and interaction design issues involved in viewing video, in combination with other media, on a mobile device, in an outdoor context. The study produced three main results: 1. An analytical framework for user-experience concerns in cultural heritage settings, 2. Design recommendations for outdoor mobile multimedia guides and 4. Refinements in methods for collecting and analysing data from fieldwork with visitors in cultural heritage settings. Those results were formulated for the use of mobile guide designers. The methodology used to inform and structure the work was Design Research, involving literature review and empirical work, including user trials of a prototype tourist guide developed in the project. The literature review covered areas of tourism, multimedia design, mobile HCI and existing mobile guides. Outdoor fieldwork exercises were carried out with three different cultural information sources - human tour guide, paper based guide and mobile guide app - in order to identify any problems that visitors might have and to gather requirements for the development of a mobile cultural guide. Qualitative analysis was applied to analyse the video observations and questionnaires completed during the tours. Requirements were grouped and analysed to give substantial information for a conceptual design. Personas and scenarios were created based on real participants and situations that occurred on the tours. A mobile guide prototype was developed and evaluated in the field with visitors. Qualitative analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Visitors were asked about their preferences among various multimedia design elements and answered a questionnaire on their experience. The elements that affect the user experience with outdoor mobile guides were categorised and organised into a framework. It became apparent that users' experience of technology (in this case the mobile tourist guide) and environment are affected by context, content and look and feel elements. This framework of user experience generated a design toolkit with a collection of recommendations for designers of such systems. The recommendations are described in context of usage and have a rating system with strength of evidence and confidence based on how often they appeared in the field works and solutions tested.

With the rapid growth of multimedia services, future generations of wireless communications require higher data rates and a more reliable transmission link while keeping satisfactory quality of service. In this respect, multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems have been considered as an efficient approach to address these demands by offering significant multiplexing and diversity gains over single-antenna systems without increasing requirements on radio resources such as bandwidth and power. Although MIMO systems can unfold their huge benefit in cellular base stations, they may face limitations when it comes to their deployment in mobile handsets. In particular, the typically small-size of mobile handsets makes it impractical to deploy multiple antennas. To overcome this drawback, the concept of cooperative communications has recently been proposed and gained large interest in the research community. The key idea is to form a virtual MIMO antenna array by utilizing a third terminal, a so-called relay node, which assists the direct communication. After receiving the source’s message, the relay processes and forwards it to the destination. With this approach, the benefits of MIMO systems can be attained in a distributed fashion. Furthermore, cooperative communications can efficiently combat the severity of fading and shadowing effects through the assistance of relay terminals. It has been shown that using the relay can extend the coverage of wireless networks. In this thesis, we focus on the performance evaluation of such cooperative communication systems and their application to mobile multimedia. The thesis is divided into five parts. In particular, the first part proposes a hybrid decode-amplify-forward (HDAF) relaying protocol which can significantly improve the performance of cooperative communication systems compared to the two conventional schemes of decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF). It is interesting to see that the performance gain of HDAF over DF and AF strictly depends on the relative value of channel conditions between the two hops. The second part extends HDAF to the case of multiple relays. It is important to note that the gains are saturated as the number of relays tends to be a large value. This observation motivates us to use a small number of relays to reduce network overhead as well as system complexity while the obtained gains are still as much as in the large-number case. In the third part, we analyze the performance of DF relaying networks with best relay selection over Nakagami-m fading channels. Besides the diversity gain, we show that the spatial multiplexing gain can be achieved by cooperative communications. We analyze the performance of cooperative multiplexing systems in terms of symbol error rate and ergodic capacity over composite fading channels. Finally, in the fifth part, we exploit the benefit of both diversity and multiplexing gain by proposing an unequal error transmission scheme for mobile multimedia services using cooperative communications.

Limited-battery power is a major constraint in mobile learning. It is important to adopt battery power-saving mechanisms in mobile learning applications in order to extend the duration of learning activities. This thesis explores issues related to power-saving in mobile learning. Streaming of online educational multimedia on mobile devices is a power hungry activity due to large amount of wireless data transfer. A number of power-saving multimedia adaptation techniques for streaming multimedia have been developed in the past. Most of these existing approaches achieve power-saving by uniformly lowering the presentation quality of an entire multimedia stream. These generic techniques will typically lower the visual quality of an entire multimedia stream uniformly, without considering its impact on perceived loss of visual information at different points of the multimedia stream. In this thesis, through a user study we suggest that reducing the quality of educational multimedia beyond a certain level - for power-saving adaptation - can cause perceived loss of visual information in quality-sensitive portions of a multimedia. This could have a negative impact on perceived learning effects and leave the resource unsuitable for learning. The results of the study suggest that different parts of a learning multimedia may have different lowest acceptable presentation quality requirements for avoiding perceived loss of visual information. The participants of the study were able to comprehend visual information in one fragment at a lower visual quality but could not comprehend visual information of some other fragments at the same quality level. To address this problem, we proposed a Content-Aware Power Saving Educational Multimedia Adaptation (CAPS-EMA) approach that suggests a way of delivering each portion of a multimedia in a lowest acceptable quality based on the visual contents of each fragment. We demonstrate an implementation of this approach using a prototype system called MoBELearn. The results of our evaluation studies suggest that the way CAPS-EMA adapts multimedia resources is acceptable to users in power-saving situations. CAPS-EMA requires some authoring processes in order to identify fragments and lowest acceptable quality constraints. An expert evaluation described the activities involved in the authoring process as easy to understand and perform Power-saving multimedia adaptation mostly results in some compromises in terms of visual quality and information content. Existing techniques offer users little control over the adaptation process and they are obliged to accept the consequences of the adaptation. We propose a Learner Battery Interaction (LBI) mechanism that suggests offering users power-saving options and relevant feedback about the expected compromises for each power-saving option. This would enable users to make informed choices about power-saving. We evaluated the concept of LBI through a user study. The results of the study suggest a positive perceived usefulness of the system and that mobile learning applications may benefit from the idea. In the end, we propose a search mechanism for online adaptive learning resources that would help find a personalised learning resource that would fulfil the information needs of a learner in a battery-efficient way. This proposed mechanism is based on the concept of discovery of online open adaptive learning resources. For this purpose, we proposed an ontology model to describe adaptive learning resources, in terms of its adaptive features: learning and presentation features. This model could be used as a basis for implementing the proposed concept of the discovery of versions of adaptive learning resources in order to enable learners to engage in learning activities in a battery-efficient way by searching for online learning resources.

This study in the aerospace ground equipment (AGE) apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, examined the use of mobile digital devices to determine which device leveraged the best results and was most compatible with military technical training requirements. The sample consisted of 160 students who attended the course between January and June, 2010. Three devices loaded with course materials were issued to the students, who used the devices in the classroom and were encouraged to use the devices to enhance their study time after class. Quantitative data were obtained by comparing block test scores to determine if any device produced a significant change in student learning. Qualitative data were collected from surveys administered to instructors and students to measure which device instructors and students found easiest to understand and use, and student satisfaction with the device. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a statistically significant difference (p < .05) in the block test mean scores between groups using mobile devices and the students in the control group that had no device. Post hoc comparisons on each block showed that there was a statistically significant difference between students using the smartphone and students using the other devices, but no statistically significant difference in the block test mean scores between students using the iPod and the netbook. The netbook leveraged the best results, both in block test scores and student satisfaction. The greatest reported disadvantage of the smartphone and the iPod Touch was the small screen size.

Mobile communication systems have continued to evolve beyond the currently deployed Third Generation (3G) systems with the main goal of providing higher capacity. Systems beyond 3G are expected to cater for a wide variety of services such as speech, data, image transmission, video, as well as multimedia services consisting of a combination of these. With the air interface being the bottleneck in mobile networks, recent enhancing technologies such as the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), incorporate major changes to the radio access segment of 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). HSDPA introduces new features such as fast link adaptation mechanisms, fast packet scheduling, and physical layer retransmissions in the base stations, necessitating buffering of data at the air interface which presents a bottleneck to end-to-end communication. Hence, in order to provide end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees to multimedia services in wireless networks such as HSDPA, efficient buffer management schemes are required at the air interface. The main objective of this thesis is to propose and evaluate solutions that will address the QoS optimization of multimedia traffic at the radio link interface of HSDPA systems. In the thesis, a novel queuing system known as the Time-Space Priority (TSP) scheme is proposed for multimedia traffic QoS control. TSP provides customized preferential treatment to the constituent flows in the multimedia traffic to suit their diverse QoS requirements. With TSP queuing, the real-time component of the multimedia traffic, being delay sensitive and loss tolerant, is given transmission priority; while the non-real-time component, being loss sensitive and delay tolerant, enjoys space priority. Hence, based on the TSP queuing paradigm, new buffer managementalgorithms are designed for joint QoS control of the diverse components in a multimedia session of the same HSDPA user. In the thesis, a TSP based buffer management algorithm known as the Enhanced Time Space Priority (E-TSP) is proposed for HSDPA. E-TSP incorporates flow control mechanisms to mitigate congestion in the air interface buffer of a user with multimedia session comprising real-time and non-real-time flows. Thus, E-TSP is designed to provide efficient network and radio resource utilization to improve end-to-end multimedia traffic performance. In order to allow real-time optimization of the QoS control between the real-time and non-real-time flows of the HSDPA multimedia session, another TSP based buffer management algorithm known as the Dynamic Time Space Priority (D-TSP) is proposed. D-TSP incorporates dynamic priority switching between the real-time and non-real-time flows. D-TSP is designed to allow optimum QoS trade-off between the flows whilst still guaranteeing the stringent real-time component’s QoS requirements. The thesis presents results of extensive performance studies undertaken via analytical modelling and dynamic network-level HSDPA simulations demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed TSP queuing system and the TSP based buffer management schemes.

A defining aspect of our era is the continuous migration of media consumers toward alternative distribution platforms. These are used to access content formerly available only in traditional media's original format. The intensification of wireless networks and the increasing portability of content, music content in particular, has resulted in radio listeners reverting to wireless delivery technologies to access, discover, listen to, share and store music. This empirical research project explores the consequences of mobile technology on commercial radio by looking at the ways in which mobility is altering the relationship between commercial radio and music fans. The specific research objectives of this study are threefold: (1) to better understand the increasing role of the mobile industry and of wireless delivery technologies as purveyors of music; (2) to explore their repercussions on the viability of commercial radio; and (3) to identify the appearance of effects on the habits and expectations of radio listeners.

The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is intended by the Telco industry, to make it easy for third-party application developers to create new, innovative services that will help to offset the fall in revenue of regular voice services. However, a slow roll out of the system is increasing the chance of a disruptive technology to fill some of the space that IMS hopes to cover. This thesis presents a hands on example of the implementation of such a new innovative service. XMPP has been used as an alternative platform to launch the service, and is thoroughly compared to the IMS in this master's thesis. Ironically the service could not be launched on IMS due to technical problems. Results suggest that XMPP could replace IMS as a service platform, thus disrupting the business model of IMS.

With the advent of mobile Internet the amount of time people spend with multimedia applications in the mobile environment is surging and demand for high quality multimedia data over the Internet in the mobile environment is growing rapidly. However the mobile environment is significantly more unfriendly than the wired environment for multimedia applications in many ways. Network resources are limited and the condition is harder to predict. Also multimedia applications are generally delay intolerant and bandwidth demanding, and with users moving, their demand could be much more dynamic and harder to anticipate. Due to such reasons many existing mobile multimedia applications show unsatisfactory performance in the mobile environment. We target three multimedia content delivery applications and optimize with limited and unpredictable network conditions typical in the mobile Internet environment. Vehicular networks have emerged from the strong desire to communicate on the move. We explore the potential of supporting high-bandwidth applications such as video streaming in vehicular networks. Challenges include limited and expensive cellular network, etc. Internet video conferencing has become popular over the past few years, but supporting high-quality large video conferences at a low cost remains a significant challenge due to stringent performance requirements, limited and heterogeneous client. We develop a simple yet effective Valiant multicast routing to select application-layer routes and adapt streaming rates according to dynamically changing network condition in a swift and lightweight way enough to be implemented on mobile devices. Bitrate adaptive video streaming is rapidly gaining popularity. However recent measurements show weaknesses in bitrate selection strategies implemented in today's streaming players especially in the mobile environment. We propose a novel rate adaptation scheme that classifies the network condition into stable and unstable periods and optimizes video quality with different strategies based on the classification.

Based on multimedia broadcast/multicast service architecture(MBMS), this thesis proposes an efficient QoS-based multicast approach for the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). Our approach adopts the existing scalable-coding technique to provide multiple levels of service quality to diverse mobile devices in the UMTS system. In this approach, two kinds of transmission modes are developed to utilize fully the network resources for wireline and wireless links. An analytic model is presented to investigate the performance of our approach and the 3GPP 23.246 approach. The numerical results indicate that in terms of transmission costs of core/radio networks, our approach outperforms the 3GPP 23.246 approach.

With the increasing demand on multimedia applications over the Internet, and the growing number of mobile smart devices people are using, it is helpful to develop a mobile network architecture that can support multimedia transmission without using infrastructures. We propose that service overlay networks over MANETs can serve as a supplement to the existing 3G/4G networks and Wi-Fi access point networks. In this thesis we present experiment results that show the feasibility of mobile service overlay networks to meet the requirements of multimedia streaming. And also, we improved one of the existing overlay protocols. The improved protocol takes physical location into consideration when establishing connections in the overlay network. It also limits the number of neighbors each node can have, which prevents a particular node from becoming the bottleneck of the network, when connected to too many neighbors. Evaluation results show the new protocol reduces network packet loss rate.

In this paper, we propose the Synchronized Mobile Multicast (SMM) scheme for the real-time multimedia multicast service to achieve three most important characteristics that the traditional Home Subscription (HS) and Remote Subscription (RS) mobile schemes cannot support. First, the SMM scheme supports the one-to-many synchronized multimedia multicast on mobile IP networks to achieves seamless playback of continuous media streams even when both the mobile sender and receivers handoff simultaneously. Second, it analyzes the minimal buffer requirements of the mobile sender, the core router, the foreign agents and the mobile receivers in the multicast tree and formulates the initial playback delay within a handoff Guarantee Region (GR). Further, combined with the fine granularity scalability (FGS) encoding approach in the MPEG-4 standard, the SMM scheme achieves unlimited numbers of handoffs of the mobile sender and receivers only at the cost of degraded video quality for a short period after handoff with minimal extra bandwidth.

With the developing of mobile communications technology, new business opportunity has been brought to the saturated mobile communications market. The high popularizing rate of mobile phone leads the mobile phone to be an indispensable implement. Meanwhile, it is becoming the new passage of sending advertisement, and brings a brand new business opportunity for the related companies of advertising and mobile communications services. Previously, traditional mobile advertisings were short message services without personal-based design. Thus, such advertisements sometimes are regarded as garbage messages. Even more, consumers might have negative attitudes toward advertisers. Under the trend of mobile broadband, 3G & 4G mobile broadband internet gave advertisers the feasibility of providing more diversified and personalized multimedia messages to subscribers. An effective mobile advertising is defined as sending appropriate message to the most potential subscriber at the best time in the right place. Therefore, judging the appropriate content, time, and place to the right subscriber has been the common issue to mobile advertisers and consumers. In this study, research related to mobile advertising were collected and stated for the purpose of inducting 13 factors of personalized mobile advertising. Using Fuzzy Delphi Method extracted six key factors from 13 factors of personalized mobile advertising from experts’ advices. By placing Fuzzy Multi Criteria Decision Marketing Method, this study found goods were more suitable than services to use in personal mobile advertising. In addition, the most important design factors are device type, interests, and preference model. This study combined the real cases in Europe and U.S.A to explore the methods of applying personal mobile advertising for advertisers. The findings of the research can convey the advertisements to the proper consumers effectively and efficiently. Meanwhile, advertising benefit rate (i.e. effectiveness of advertising) and consumer satisfaction would be expected to increase. Plus, operating profit of mobile communications service companies will be created.

The proliferation of mobile devices such as the Apple iPhone entails ubiquitous availability of a variety of multimedia information to users on the move; ready at our fingertips, virtually anywhere and anytime. However, these devices have strong limitations: small screen real estate and restricted input capabilities. Moreover, with the ever increasing number of multimedia data and services, the navigation complexity rises and in turn decreases both user experience and usability. This thesis explores how the affordances of mobile devices can be leveraged to design novel interfaces for the mobile interaction with large multimedia information spaces, toward a more usable and enjoyable user experience. The contributions are placed alongside three main research directions: The first, device-centric interaction, investigates how mobile devices can be used efficiently in spite of the small screen leveraging input modalities such as touch or tilt. It focuses on mobile video browsing as a guiding scenario and contributes an exploration of the design space of mobile video browsers. It further contributes a set of novel interfaces, which are analyzed in an extensive controlled experiment. To state only one example, our analysis shows that the video player included in the iPhone has significant drawbacks; it also points out how future versions can be designed to be more usable. The second research direction, space-centric interaction, pushes the boundaries of the virtual information space beyond the small screen toward the physical environment. It particularly looks at how mobile devices can be used as see-through displays when mapping the virtual information to the physical space. It also contributes an empirically grounded theory thereof and a novel movement time model for the embodied navigation with spatially-aware displays. The third axis of research is devoted to the questions of how virtual and physical space can be tightly integrated, allowing for both device- and space-centric interaction with real-world objects--not just one particular mobile device. Pico projectors are used to project virtual information into physical space, turning objects into dedicated projection surfaces and tangible interaction devices. The thesis investigates this in an exploratory field study. Based upon this study, it advances the field of pico projector interaction by deriving novel interaction techniques. Results from a user study indicate the potential to fundamentally change how we ubiquitously interact with augmented real-world objects.
