Abstract:
Although there are several Software Development kits and Application Programming Interfaces for client-side location-based services development, they mostly involve the creation of self-referencing location-based services. Self-referencing location-based services include services such as geocoding, reverse geocoding, route management and navigation which focus on satisfying the location-based requirements of a single mobile device. There is a lack of open-source Software Development Kits for the development of client-side location-based services that are cross-referencing. Cross-referencing location-based services are designed for the sharing of location information amongst different entities on a given network. This project was undertaken to assemble, through incremental prototyping, a client-side Java Micro Edition location-based services Software Development Kit and a Mobicents location server to aid mobile network operators and developers alike in the quick creation of the transport and privacy protection of cross-referencing location-based applications on Session Initiation Protocol bearer networks. The privacy of the location information is protected using geolocation policies. Developers do not need to have an understanding of Session Initiation Protocol event signaling specifications or of the XML Configuration Access Protocol to use the tools that we put together. The developed tools are later consolidated using two sample applications, the friend-finder and child-tracker services. Developer guidelines are also provided, to aid in using the provided tools.

Abstract:
With the rapid development of wireless technologies, traditional mobile devices, such as pagers and cellular phones, have evolved from a purely communications and messaging-oriented medium to one that supports mobile data communication in general and acts as an application platform. As shown in a recent survey conducted by MDA, easy access to the present-day wireless Internet has resulted in mobile devices gaining more and more attention and popularity. The growth of and demand for mobile Web applications is expected to increase rapidly in the near future, as a range of software companies and mobile device manufacturers release increasingly accessible tools for creating mobile Web application and services. From a variety of possible development environments of this kind, the author has selected and examined two leading contenders, the J2ME and the Microsoft .NET mobile Web application development environments. This document reports the product life cycle of pilot mobile web applications, designed and implemented in each host environment in tum. A feature-by-feature investigation and comparison of the J2ME and .NET environments was carried out, covering the range of issues necessary for a complete mobile Web application development life cycle. The resulting analysis addresses features and efficiencies of the application development environment and the target deployment environment, the degree to which the resultant services are compatible on a variety of platforms, and the ease with which applications can be designed to be extensible. The thesis offers an objective evaluation of the J2ME and the .NET mobile development environments, which highlights their strengths and weaknesses, and suggests guidelines for designing, creating, and deploying high quality mobile Web applications. The research uncovers no clear winner across all categories assessed. J2ME currently favours situations in which bandwidth is limited and client side processing power is relatively sufficient, it exerts the processing power of mobile devices over distributed network environments. .NET requires a less constrained network throughput, but performs adequately on clients with more limited processing power, supports a more diverse target platform range, and offers a more efficient, in terms of development time, development environment. Both technologies are likely to receive significant user support for some time.

Abstract:
Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, are becoming more popular everyday. This new devices class is constantly evolving on what concerns computing capabilities, allowing users to switch from larger computers to smaller mobile devices in several cases. Everyday new apps for these devices are developed and published in software repositories, enabling users to quickly install and benefit from new software. In order to deal with the multiple resource requests from different applications running in parallel, the operating system’s resource management design plays a key role. Most resource managers available to mobile phones are designed to maximize the performance of the system as a whole, not always taking into account the characteristics of the processes requiring resources in the application layer. This type of strategy can lead to cases where some applications experience longer latencies than desired while accessing resources, compromising the Quality of Service or system security. This work aims to offer a new resource management model for mobile devices, allowing the creation of rules that can prioritize the resource allocation for specific applications according to their needs. Also it implemented a proof of concept prototype version of this model, using the Android platform, confirming its viability.

Abstract:

The purpose with this essay is to examine the phenomenon SMS in TV. Partly by identify the communication process behind the phenomenon and partly by describing it in a editorial and technical point of view. We have analysed the communication process regarding scientific theories in communication, interaction and convergence. With a qualitive approach we have fulfilled four interviews and two small ethnographical field observations. Objects for the interviews and observations have been two Swedish produced debate-programs, broadcasted in TV; Diskus in TV4 and Debatt in SVT2. Our conclusions shows that the phenomenon SMS in TV provides the traditional one-way communicative medium TV a new opportunity to create a feedback-channel between the TV-viewer and the TV-producer. The main purpose with SMS in TV from a TV-producers point of view is to let the TV-viewer have the possibility to send a SMS-message with his or her thoughts or questions to the TV-producer and by that affect the TV-program. Our conclusions also describes how the phenomenon is used in a editorial way and how it’s produced and used in a technical point of view. Further discussions are made regarding problems connected to the phenomenon and it’s future possibilities.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a technological trend which individuals of all ages are embracing. BYOD involves an employee of an organisation using their own mobile devices to access their organisations network. Several incremental risks will arise as a result of adoption of a BYOD program by an organisation. The research aims to assist organisations to identify what incremental risks they could potentially encounter if they adopt a BYOD program and how they can use a framework like COBIT 5 in order to reduce the incremental risks to an acceptable level. By means of an extensive literature review the study revealed 50 incremental risks which arise as a result of the adoption of a BYOD program. COBIT 5 was identified as the most appropriate framework which could be used to map the incremental risks against. Possible safeguards were identified from the mapping process which would reduce the incremental risks to an acceptable level. It was identified that 13 of the 37 COBIT 5 processes were applicable for the study.

Abstract:
The foreign language teaching in Brazil has been subject of lots of discussions around the theoretical approaches and methodologies, which offer improvement to the learning process. The inclusion of the new technologies applied to the school context may support this process, once students since very early get in touch with such tools, what may make facilitate the teacher’s job. The arrival of the mobile devices (smartphones e tablets), with the instantaneous and ubiquitous into the classrooms it has shown itself as being an important pedagogical support, which makes the didactic contents more authentic, appealing and challenging. Therefore, this current research has the following objectives: produce an application to support the English Language Teaching at High School; apply the prototype in the classroom; report the positive and negative aspects of this application; analyze the participation of the students and teacher in class during the application. The theoretical base that guided the learning theories through the use of the mobile devices of Lemos (2010), Lévy (2010); the concept of digital and of m-learning of Sharples, Taylor and Vavoula (2007), Barbosa, Amarolinda e Schlemmer (2011), Marçal, Andrade e Rios (2005) and Moura (2010); the theory of social development and learning or sociointeracionism, interaction and learning according to the studies of Vigotsky (1999) and Vigotsky and Cole (1998); the conception of learning of foreign language through the communicative approach of acquisition and development in multicultural and contextualized of Foster and Ohta (2005) and Krashen (1987); and lastly the concept of affordance under the perspective of Gibson and Pick (2000) and Cakmak et al. (2007). In order to be able to carry out this study we used the following kinds of research: descriptive, bibliographic, experimental, and analytical. The participants of the research were 15 students of the first grade of High School of the Public Educational system from the city of Londrina, Paraná state. The results showed that the mobile devices offer real learning possibilities, provide that the teacher taps them appropriately. The learning of the English language by the use of the mobile Medias has promoted an improvement on the language acquisition, allowing students to create a friendly, motivating and productive environment, optimizing the studying time.

Abstract:

Today’s mobile phones are capable of both fast data processing and communication via a number of interfaces such as 3G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. As the number of mobile phones increases, the distance between adjacent mobile phones decreases. However, the mobile phones rarely communicate directly with each other. This thesis explores the possibilities of communication and work-sharing among adjacent mobile phones by the creation of a communication framework and an application. The communication framework enables both direct and group communication among mobile phones and the application uses the communication framework to share work and improve the download time of a web page. Together they form a system that is used to evaluate the performance in mobile distributed systems. The thesis demonstrates that work-sharing among adjacent mobile phones is feasible and that the speedup is significant when the shared work is large enough compared to the overhead introduced by the communication.

Abstract:
Nowadays Android operating system based mobile phones and tablets are widely used and had millions of users around the world. The popularity of this operating system is due to its multi-tasking, ease of access and diverse device options. “Java Programming Speech Recognition Application” is an Android application used for handicapped individuals who are not able or have difficultation to type on a keyboard. This application allows the user to write a compute program (in Java Language) by dictating the words and without using a keyboard. The user needs to speak out the commands and symbols required for his/her program. The program has been designed to pick up the Java constant keywords (such as ‘boolean’, ‘break’, ‘if’ and ‘else’), similar to the word received by the speech recognizer system in the application. The “Java Programming Speech Recognition Application” contains external plug-ins such as programming editor and a speech recognizer to record and write the program. These plug-ins come in the form of libraries and pre-coded folders which have to be attached to the main program by the developer.

Abstract:
Advances in wireless networking technology have engendered a new paradigm of computing, called mobile computing; in which users carrying portable devices have access to a shared infrastructure independent of their physical location. Mobile computing has matured rapidly as a field of computer science. In environments of mobile computing, the mobility and disconnection of portable computing devices introduce many new challenging problems that have never been encountered in conventional computer networks. New research issues combine different areas of computer science: networking, operating systems, data and knowledge management, and databases. This thesis studies data and knowledge transaction in mobile environments. To study transaction processing at the fundamental and theoretical level in mobile environments, a range of classical notions and protocols of transaction processing are rechecked and redefined in this thesis, and form the foundation for studying transaction processing in mobile environments. A criterion for mobile serial history is given and two new concurrency theorems are proved in mobile environments. In addition to data transaction, this thesis explores knowledge transaction in mobile environments. To study knowledge transaction in mobile environments this thesis presents and formalizes a knowledge transaction language and model for use in mobile computing environments. The thesis further formalizes a framework/model for a mobile logic programming multi-agent system which can be used to study knowledge transaction in multi-agent systems in mobile environments and is a very early effort towards a formal study of knowledge base and intelligent agents in mobile environments. This work provides a foundation for the formal specification and development of real-world mobile software systems, in the same way as traditional software systems have developed.

ABSTRACT Currently, digital technologies, notably mobile technologies, are part of the daily people lives. Aware of these technologies expansion in society, Brazilian educational managers have sought their insertion in the country's public schools, developing specific policies and programs for this purpose. However, the mobile devices provided by the government projects have specific technical and conceptual characteristics distinct from other equipment available in the market, and have some use limitations, compromising the development of certain practices. In this context, research problems are configured: what are education conceptions present in the insertion programs of digital technologies in education that determined the technical and conceptual characteristics of the mobile devices available to public schools? Would it be necessary to have specific features, such as those found in the hardware and software devices, for them to be used in schools? The research was based on the quantitative and qualitative approaches, involving the analysis of the technical and conceptual characteristics of the mobile devices that were part of the Pilot phase of the One Computer Per Student (UCA), Proinfo Integrado and PROUCA Programs, as well as the study of policies Public and federal programs of insertion of the digital technologies in the schools, with focus in the understanding of some of the main documents that served as base for the implementation of the mentioned programs and project. Among the findings, it should be noted that the low cost was decisive for the characterization of the devices, prevailing over other aspects, such as performance, ergonomics, usability and durability, which indicates the need for more attention regarding the cost-benefit relation when specification of the equipment for the public schools, in order to seek the most advantageous proposal for public management and Education.

Abstract:
Although evolving mobile technologies bring millions of users closer to the vision of information anywhere-anytime, device battery depletions hamper the quality of experience to a great extent. The massive explosion of mobile applications with the ensuing data exchange over the cellular infrastructure is not only a blessing to the mobile user, but also has a price in terms of rapid discharge of the device battery. Wireless communication is a large contributor to the energy consumption. Thus, the current call for energy economy in mobile devices poses the challenge of reducing the energy consumption of wireless data transmissions at the user end by developing energy-efficient communication. This thesis addresses the energy efficiency of data transmission at the user end in the context of cellular networks. We argue that the design of energy-efficient solutions starts by energy awareness and propose EnergyBox, a parametrised tool that enables accurate and repeatable energy quantification at the user end using real data traffic traces as input. EnergyBox abstracts the underlying states for operation of the wireless interfaces and allows to estimate the energy consumption for different operator settings and device characteristics. Next, we devise an energy-efficient algorithm that schedules the packet transmissions at the user end based on the knowledge of the network parameters that impact the handset energy consumption. The solution focuses on the characteristics of a given traffic class with the lowest quality of service requirements. The cost of running the solution itself is studied showing that the proposed cross-layer scheduler uses a small amount of energy to significantly extend the battery lifetime at the cost of some added latency.  Finally, the benefit of employing EnergyBox to systematically study the different design choices that developers face with respect to data transmissions of applications is shown in the context of location sharing services and instant messaging applications. The results show that quantifying energy consumption of communication patterns, protocols, and data formats can aid the design of tailor-made solutions with a significantly smaller energy footprint.

Abstract:
Mobile Commerce (MC) can be defined as any transaction carried out over a wireless network, using a wireless device, such as a mobile phone, and that has monetary value (Wang and Liao, 2007). MC is a rapidly developing industry in tenns of its technological capabilities. With these increasing developments, come greater forecasts of potential benefits to societies, economies, industries and individuals. However, the growth and development ofthe underlying MC technology, has not been met by the creation and adoption of the services meant to accompany MC. It is said that the success of MC will ultimately lie in its services. As MC Service Providers (MCSP) are responsible for delivering these MC Services (MCS), the success ofMC can be said to rest on them. In order for MCSs to be successfully adopted, both the initial use and continuous use thereof should be targeted. In other words those that have used MCSs (users) and those that have yet to use MCSs (non-users) should be targeted. It is thus pivotal that an understanding of the factors that generate MCS adoption be sought. This research purposed to uncover the factors that generate MCS adoption within the user and nonuser group. In defining successful adoption ofMCS's, two separate measures were used for each group. User satisfaction is a well accepted construct among researchers for measuring system success among users. User satisfaction is also accepted to be a detenninant of service re-use and loyalty. Intention to use is a measure used for MC success among non-users and is accepted to be a detenninant of actual use. Factors affecting both detenninants, user satisfaction and intention to use, were investigated. After a review ofliterature and current models, ten (10) factors were hypothesised to be significant factors in determining user satisfaction and intention to use namely: ease of use, cost, speed, personalisation, pennission, privacy, security, convenience, relationship (with MCSP) and awareness. A questionnaire was developed to test the hypothesised factors. Not all factors were proven to have a significant impact on both user satisfactions and intention to use. One main recommendation is that both initial and continuous adoption should be the focus ofMC strategy. Services that cater to specific user needs and offer convenience at a low cost should be offered. MCSPs can use the factors proved to be significant to generate and evaluate their service offering, to users and non users, to increase the probability of successful adoption from initial to continuous use. The research concludes that MCSPs need to begin to offer MCSs that meet user needs and add value to their lives in order to realise the professed potential ofMC.

Abstract:
The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has recently released network mobility standards that allow deployment of TCP/IP networks onboard a vehicle and maintain permanent network connectivity to the Internet via a vehicular mobile router. This recent development opens up new opportunities for providing efficient mobile computing for users on the move, especially for commuters traveling on public transports. Moreover, central and coordinated management of mobility in a single router, rather than by each user device individually, has numerous advantages. In this architecture, however, it becomes challenging to guarantee network performance due to the mobility of the network and inherently vulnerable nature of wireless links. In this thesis, a detailed performance study of onboard networks is conducted. It has been shown that disruptions in the mobile router connectivity can significantly degrade network throughput. Moreover, factors such as the limited wireless bandwidth of the access link, variations in the bandwidth due to technology switching, and the communication diversity of onboard users all contribute to the problem of unfair sharing of wireless bandwidth. By leveraging the fact that all onboard communications go through the mobile router, performance enhancing solutions are proposed that can be deployed in the mobile router to transparently address the throughput and fairness problems. In this architecture, when the route is known in advance and repetitive (e.g. for public transport or a regularly commuting private vehicle), a certain degree of prediction of impending link disruptions is possible. An anticipatory state freezing mechanism is proposed that relies on the prediction of link disruptions to freeze and unfreeze the state machine of TCP, the widely used transport protocol in the Internet. Simulation study shows that TCP throughput has a non-linear relationship with the prediction accuracy. As prediction accuracy increases, throughput problem diminishes quickly. An adaptive mobile router based fairness control mechanism is proposed to address the unfair sharing of wireless bandwidth in highly dynamic scenarios. The fairness is controlled by dynamically estimating the round-trip-times of all onboard TCP connections and transparently adjusting the protocol control parameters at the router. The thesis also discusses implementation issues for the proposed solutions.

Abstract:
Multipath fading is one of the major practical concerns in wireless communications. A multipath transmission takes place when a transmitted signal arrives at a receiver by two or more paths of different delay. Such multiple paths may be due to atmospheric reflection or refraction, or reflections from buildings or other objects. A multipath fading channel is usually modeled as a time-variant tapped delay system. RAKE receiver can be used to detect the signal from the multipath fading channel. However, the number of delay taps, the time delay of each path, and the tap weight for each delay path need to be determined. The objective of this thesis is to explore the possibility of using the advance signal processing algorithms to estimate the number of delays, the time delay of each path, and the tap weight for each delay path in multipath channels and to investigate the performance of the RAKE receiver based on chip rate channel estimates in a realistic mobile environment. Simulations show that the new approach outperforms the existing approaches.

Keshariya, Mayank. "Extended Policy-Based Management Framework to Provide Always Best Connected Services in Heterogeneous Mobile Environments." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Computer Science and Software Engineering, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2549.

Abstract:
The growth in the popularity of Internet services, increasing demands of mobile users together with a wide range of access technologies and mobile-networked devices, introduces the notion of integration and inter-working of heterogeneous access networks. Sometimes referred to as 4th generation (4G) networks, the overall objective of this research is to provide a managed Always Best Connected (ABC) service over underlying heterogeneous wireless and mobile platforms while maintaining negotiated security and Quality of Service in a scalable and modular environment. This research proposes a new model and its architecture for policy-based management (PBM) to provide a framework for the centralised management of networks based on business-level policies. This work extends existing IETF Policy-based Network Management (PBNM) model by introducing a new layered-approach which facilitates the negotiation of management services over interconnected heterogeneous mobile platforms, thus achieving an ABC scenario. The proposed layered-approach provides flexibility to the organisations so that they can choose favourable semantic and syntactic approaches and facilitates the separation of management policies from their implementation in a distributed and heterogeneous environment. The extended Policy Information Model and a new policy conflict detection technique are also introduced. Further, we have proposed and implemented a new model of a policy-managed mobile client and its architecture to support seamless handoff across multiple access networks. The proposed mobile client supports multi-domain authentication and security along with downloadable user profiles. We have also proposed and implemented a network selection algorithm and introduced a new Infrastructure parameter, which assists in selecting an optimum time and the best available access network to handoff. We present performance analysis to validate our architectural approach.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to enhance the network performance under realistic mobile ad-hoc networks environments without modification of the standard. Overview of this research is summarized as follows: First, a packet-fragmentation technique to improve network throughput under the worst channel conditions is proposed. While the conventional packet-fragmentation technique research focuses only on random-bit errors, the proposed technique employs both random bit errors and hidden-node collisions. The analytical models based on Markov-chain model shows that the optimal fragmentation technique can effectively reduce the number of retransmissions caused by both collisions from hidden nodes and corrupted packets by random bit errors, and eventually improving throughput in noisy VANETs channels. As a second contribution, a dynamic service-channel allocation (DSCA) scheme is proposed to maximize the network throughput by dynamically assigning different service channels to the users. The theoretical analysis in this thesis will consider wireless access in the vehicular environment (WAVE) protocol, which is the main characteristic of the vehicular ad-hoc networks standard (the IEEE 802.11p). To summarize, the main contribution of this research is that two schemes will improve the network throughput significantly without modification of the standard. Therefore, there is no implementation issue to deploy the proposed schemes in real devices.

Abstract:
We evaluate several routing protocols, and show that the use of bandwidth and delay estimation can provide throughput and delay guarantees in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). This thesis describes modifications to the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol to implement the Quality Aware Source Routing (QASR) network routing protocol operating on an 802.11e link layer. QASR network nodes exchange node location and flow reservation data periodically to provide information necessary to model and estimate both the available bandwidth and the end-to-end delay of available routes during route discovery. Bandwidth reservation is used to provide end-to-end Quality of Service, while also utilizing the differentiated Quality of Service provided by the 802.11e link layer. We show that QASR performs significantly better in several performance metrics over the DSR and the Ad-Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocols, and performs more consistently in all quality metrics when traffic demand exceeds network capacity.

Abstract:
Communication between deaf individuals and hearing individuals can be very difficult. For people who are born deaf, English is often a second language with the first language being American Sign Language (ASL). Very few hearing people in the United States sign or are aware of Deafness, Deaf culture, or how to appropriately communicate with people with hearing loss. In this thesis, I concentrate on the role that mobile technologies can play in ameliorating some of these issues. In formative work with Deaf teenagers in the metro-Atlanta area, I investigate the role that communication technologies play in the lives of many Deaf individuals and examine how these devices have effected their communication patterns and social circles. Specifically, the teens identified problems communicating with hearing individuals such as close friends and family in face-to-face situations. Having identified sign language use at home as one of the earliest interventions for Deaf children, I investigated the use of mobile phones for learning survival-level ASL. I created a prototype software application which presented short ASL lessons via either a mobile phone or desktop web-browser. The software presented the lessons via one of two different scheduling methods designed to take advantage of the spacing effect during learning. I designed and conducted a study of forty individuals with no prior ASL knowledge which compared the effects of both scheduling algorithm and platform. My results show that individuals who used a mobile phone platform and received a group of lessons at one time performed better on post-test receptive and generative ASL metrics than did participants in the three other conditions.

Abstract:
Usability is seen as an important aspect for the quality of an M-learning application. Yet very little research has been conducted in this area – particularly in South Africa. Even though the trials of M-learning projects have been witnessed in the country during the last five years, very little is known about the systems that were implemented as regards their usability. Additionally, metrics and measures used in evaluating usability have not been reported. A need exists for relevant metrics to M-learning usability. The primary objective of this work was to propose metrics and measures – for the purpose of evaluating the User-Interfacedesign usability of M-learning application. The research included a literature review of M-learning, as well as the development of metrics and measures based on the Goal Question Metric (GQM) Model. This model has helped provide a reference model and measurements for evaluating the User-InterfaceUsability. A case study was used as a research strategy. An application called Kontax was selected for evaluation by users and expert reviewers. Data-collection methods consisted of User Testing and Heuristics evaluations. Data-gathering instruments included the use of surveys and user- satisfaction questionnaires based on the proposed metrics, task scenarios and expert-reviewed questionnaires based on the proposed metrics; all these instruments were developed. It was found that, although the users thought the system was very interesting, and they wished to hear more about it in the future, the system nevertheless had usability flaws which made it difficult to use. All the users failed to register so that they could use the system; additionally, the system-error messages did not help the users recognize, and recover from an error – leaving the user to simply log out. Help was not adequate, thus making it difficult for first-time users to know what to do when they needed support. The system was also said to have a lot of information presented on its home page, which caused the user to be disoriented. The Kontax application has usability flaws which should be III attended to, in order to improve its usability. The proposed metrics proved to be very useful in evaluating the usability of the tool.

Abstract:
The goal of this master thesis was to automate the compensation of NC-programs. Automatic compensations can reduce errors and make the production more efficient. This is vital for increased precision and meeting the quality demands from the market. The project started with a study of how the feedback-loop between production and measurements was done at the time and also researching how the data could be sent between the different machines. This was done by researching solutions of similar problems and interviewing the machine operators. Simulations of how automation could be done with more in-depth measurements of the production machine were also made. The limitations was also evaluated. Research was done on errors and practical flaws which could be problematic for automation. The automation was implemented using Java to send the data between the measuring machine to the production machine. Furthermore a UI was created for the machine operators so that the information flow was under supervision at all times. The UI would suggest a compensation from a pre-programmed algorithm together with the measuring data, and the operator could then decide whether or not to diverge from the suggested compensation.
