Abstract:
Modern GPUs can execute multiple kernels concurrently to keep the hardware resources busy and to boost the overall performance. This approach is called simultaneous multiple kernel execution (MKE). MKE is a promising approach for improving GPU hardware utilization. Although modern GPUs allow MKE, the effects of different MKE scenarios have not adequately studied by the researchers. Since cache memories have significant effects on the overall GPU performance, the effects of MKE on cache performance should be investigated properly. The present study proposes a framework, called RDMKE (short for Reuse Distance-based profiling in MKEs), to provide a method for analyzing GPU cache memory performance in MKE scenarios. The raw memory access information of a kernel is first extracted and then RDMKE enforces a proper ordering to the memory accesses so that it represents a given MKE scenario. Afterward, RDMKE employs reuse distance analysis (RDA) to generate cache-related performance metrics, including hit ratios, transaction counts, cache sets and Miss Status Holding Register reservation fails. In addition, RDMKE provides the user with the RD profiles as a useful locality metric. The simulation results of single kernel executions show a fair correlation between the generated results by RDMKE and GPU performance counters. Further, the simulation results of 28 two-kernel executions indicate that RDMKE can properly capture the nonlinear cache behaviors in MKE scenarios.

Abstract:
Modal kinetic energy (MKE) method gives a measure of the dynamic contribution of each finite element model physical degree of freedom to each of the target mode shapes, and provides a rough idea where the maximum responses could be measured. It could help to select those sensor positions with possible large amplitudes, and to increase the signal to noise ratio, which is critical in harsh and noisy circumstances. Kammar proposed a new optimal placement method of triaxial accelerometers based up on the effective independence algorithm (EfI3), which places triaxial accelerometers as single units in an optimal fashion. On the basis of EfI3, this paper fully considers the mutual influence of three directions and makes some improvements for the traditional MKE method. A novel optimal placement method of triaxial accelerometers called MKE3 is proposed which is proved rational and effective by analysis the relationship between the EfI algorithm and MKE method.

Abstract:
Many existing damage identification or quantification methods can be employed only if the internal and external mass changes are negligible when tested at two different states of a structure. This paper presents a new Modal Kinetic Energy (MKE)-based method to detect and quantify damage using modal properties of structures, which can be employed even in situations when mass change is not more than a certain extent. A new damage sensitivity parameter has been developed using measured modal characteristics of baseline structure. The MKE change (MKEC) concept is then employed to locate damage and to estimate relative perturbation at each element. The relative damage extent vector is estimated by searching the best correlation between the analytical and experimental MKEC vectors with the help of genetic algorithm optimization tool. The extent of damage is calculated after computing damage scaling coefficient using measured eigenvalue change vector. A numerical study is carried out on a simply supported single span beam to confirm its performance under various test conditions. The robustness of the proposed MKE method and the significance of mass variation in the damage detection approach are evaluated by comparing the damage quantification results with a traditional approach. Finally, the proposed damage detection method is applied on a two-span simply supported beam for single and multiple damage scenarios by extracting the modal properties experimentally. The results revealed that the proposed approach is capable of detecting and estimating single and multiple damages with reasonable accuracy even in moderate noise contaminated and mass change environments.

Abstract:
The goal of the current research was to study the relationship among learning contexts and, levels of metalinguistic knowledge of the Iranian intermediate EFL learners. This research explores the level of learners’metalinguistic knowledge in English in two different contexts (traditional and intensive courses). Participants included 44 intermediate students at Shoukoh Language Institute, Zanjan, Iran. The selection violated the randomization criterion, thus the quasi-experimental was taken for the current study. The instruments used for data collection were Nelson English Language Proficiency Test (NELPT) as a placement test which used to measure level of students prior to the experiment and, a metalinguistic knowledge English test (MKET) was also, administered at the beginning and ending the semester as pre and post-test to measure their metalinguistic knowledge. The data collected from the administration of the above mentioned two tests were submitted to different statistical analysis such as ANCOVA, one independent sample t-test and, one paired sample t-test. The results revealed that there was a significant distinction between two sets performance in the metalinguistic test. An intensive English course had an important helpful influence on MKE of the students. They enhanced their MKE in an intensive semester. As an implication of this study, the findings will motivate language teachers to focus on intensive semester because intensive instruction was found to be effective in improving the EFL learners’ MKE. Further study is needed before the results of the research can be generalized.

Abstract:
AbstractThe seasonal cycles of the mean kinetic energy (MKE) and eddy kinetic energy (EKE) are compared in an idealized flow as well as in a realistic simulation of the Gulf Stream (GS) region based on three commonly used definitions: orthogonal, nonorthogonal, and moving-average filtered decompositions of the kinetic energy (KE). It is shown that only the orthogonal KE decomposition can define the physically consistent MKE and EKE that precisely represents the KEs of the mean flow and eddies, respectively. The nonorthogonal KE decomposition gives rise to a residual term that contributes to the seasonal variability of the eddies, and therefore the obtained EKE is not precisely defined. The residual term is shown to exhibit more significant seasonal variability than EKE in both idealized and realistic GS flows. Neglecting its influence leads to an inaccurate evaluation of the seasonal variability of both the eddies and the total flow. The decomposition using a moving-average filter also results in a nonnegligible residual term in both idealized and realistic GS flows. This type of definition does not ensure conservation of the total KE, even if taking into account the residual term. Moreover, it is shown that the annual cycles of the three types of EKEs or MKEs have different phases and amplitudes. The local differences of the EKE cycles are very prominent in the GS off-coast domain; however, because of the spatial inhomogeneity, the area-mean differences may not be significant.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to isolate functional Bacillus strains from Korean fermented soybeans and to evaluate their potential as probiotics. The L-asparaginase activity of MKHJ 1-1 was the highest among 162 Bacillus strains. This strain showed nonhemolysis and did not produce β-glucuronidase. Among the nine target bacteria, MKHJ 1-1 inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella sonnei, Shigella flexneri, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis resulted in MKHJ 1-1 identified as Bacillus subtilis subsp. stercoris D7XPN1. As a result of measuring the survival rate in 0.1% pepsin solution (pH 2.5) and 0.3% bile salt solution for 3 h, MKHJ 1-1 exhibited high acid resistance and was able to grow in the presence of bile salt. MKHJ 1-1 showed outstanding autoaggregation ability after 24 h. In addition, its coaggregation with pathogens was strong. Therefore, MKHJ 1-1 is a potential probiotic with L-asparaginase activity and without L-glutaminase activity, suggesting that it could be a new resource for use in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:
In this article, a novel ensemble model, called Multiple Kernel Ensemble Learning (MKEL), is developed by introducing a unified ensemble loss. Different from the previous multiple kernel learning (MKL) methods, which attempt to seek a linear combination of basis kernels as a unified kernel, our MKEL model aims to find multiple solutions in corresponding Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHSs) simultaneously. To achieve this goal, multiple individual kernel losses are integrated into a unified ensemble loss. Therefore, each model can co-optimize to learn its optimal parameters by minimizing a unified ensemble loss in multiple RKHSs. Furthermore, we apply our proposed ensemble loss into the deep network paradigm and take the sub-network as a kernel mapping from the original input space into a feature space, named Deep-MKEL (D-MKEL). Our D-MKEL model can utilize the diversified deep individual sub-networks into a whole unified network to improve the classification performance. With this unified loss design, our D-MKEL model can make our network much wider than other traditional deep kernel networks and more parameters are learned and optimized. Experimental results on several mediate UCI classification and computer vision datasets demonstrate that our MKEL model can achieve the best classification performance among comparative MKL methods, such as Simple MKL, GMKL, Spicy MKL, and Matrix-Regularized MKL. On the contrary, experimental results on large-scale CIFAR-10 and SVHN datasets concretely show the advantages and potentialities of the proposed D-MKEL approach compared to state-of-the-art deep kernel methods.

Abstract:
Following the success of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, Microfinance institutions (MFIs) which apply group-lending method through the medium of small credit have been regarded as a new and effective tools for poverty alleviation for the poor in many Less Developed Countries. This study analyses the role of two MFIs, namely KUKESRA, a government administered programme and Mitra Karya East Java (MKEJ) which is a privately managed institution in poverty alleviation in Indonesia. It examines to what extent these institutions have been successful in helping the poor, and improving the living standards of the recipients. Two alternative approaches, namely the institutionalist and the welfarist approaches, are used to examine the question of whether the poor benefited from the two programmes, followed by a comparison of the performances between the two. Using data obtained from a sample survey of 393 respondents in the District of Malang in East Java, from December 1998 - June 1999, it was found that the differences in management, organisational structure, programme design, and the system of coordination all resulted in differences in performance of the two MFI institutions studied. It was found that both programmes increased the incomes of the recipients, but the impact of KUKESRA was much lower than that of MKEJ. However, KUKESRA had a greater positive effect on employment than MKEJ. Neither of the programmes resulted in a significant improvement in the consumption of basic needs of the recipients. Of the two approaches used in the evaluation of the programmes, a good performance in terms of outreach and sustainability under the institutional approach did not imply that the poor really benefited from the programme. It was found that the welfarist approach is much more appropriate in evaluating the effectiveness of MFIs in Indonesia.

Abstract:
Part A:Cathode wear is the limiting factor in the lifetime of electrolytic cells in aluminium production. One important reason for wear in carbon cathode materials is the penetration and diffusion of sodium from the melt, through the cathode materials. A long-term goal is to use quantum chemistry methods to investigate this phenomena on an atomic scale. In order to investigate large systems, density functional theory (DFT) must be applied. A comparison of results from calculations on a small model system using various density functionals to results from high level ab initio calculations shows that TPSS is the best suited functional for sodium-graphite interactions. Using this functional, a larger system consisting of two coronene molecules and a sodium atomhas been investigated and and diffusion coeffcients have been calculated based on harmonic transition state theory. Results show that calculated diffusion coeffcients match experimental observations well, but also confirm that the model system considered is not large enough to describe bulk graphite.Part B:Halogenated alkanes is a group of molecules that has received much attention, both in experiments and theoretical investigations. Here we focus on the 1,2-dihaloethanes. The restricted rotation around the C-C bond leads to a mixture of two rotamers, anti and gauche. Experiments and previous theoretical results show which conformer is lowest in energy depends on the subsituted halogen, gauche is the preferred conformer for fluoro-subsituted molecules, while anti is lowest in energy for the other halogens. This is attributed to steric repulsion. In order to further inestitgate this phenomena, the geometries of 1,2-difluoroethane and 1,2-dichloroethane are optimizedat the CCSD(T)/cc-pVDZ level. By replacing one or both of the carbon atoms by silicon, the corresponding halo(halomethyl)silane and 1,2-dihalodisilanes are formed. These molecules are also investigated using the same methods. Strutural parameters and conformational energies are compared to experimental observations and theoreticalresults from literature. Results from calculations correspond well with experiments (for the molecules where experimental values are available) and with previous calculations (in the case of silane analogues). As predicted, the accuracy of the calculations increase when including electron correlation (MP2 and CCSD(T)) compared to the results from HF.Part C:A computational method using wave functions constructed as a linear combination of non-orthonogal Slater determinants is proposed in an article by Koch and Dalgaard in 2003. Removing the requirement of orthogonality leads to a much more flexible wave function and more electron correlation can be recovered by using fewer determinants. The method is implemented in Dalton. Test calculations for systems where FCI results are available shows the method has favourable performance compared to MP2 and CCSD(T).

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractComprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography is a multidimensional separation technique. A sample is separated by two properties on two different columns, typically by carbon number and polarity. The two columns are connected by a modulator. The modulator is responsible for collection of three to four fractions of each 1st column separation peak, condensation of the fractions, and introducing them as a sharp narrow band onto the 2nd column. It is a continuous process of condensation of succeeding 1st column fractions and transfer to the 2nd column. The individual separations are “sewn” together by the software to produce a two-dimensional chromatogram. The abscissa displays the carbon number separation and the ordinate axis show the separation of polar compounds.Pre-set parameters such as carrier gas, gas velocities, detector temperatures, and column set were kept on recommendation by the installation contractors. Method development and optimisation was performed by exploring injection volume, oven temperature programs, and modulator time parameters. Hydrocarbon standards and petroleum fractions were analysed for determining the optimal parameter values. The result was two methods, one recommended for atmospheric gas oil (AGO) analyses and another for vacuum gas oil (VGO) analyses. Injection volumes of 0.015 to 0.002 µL gave low risk of column overload while still maintaining the abundance of compounds of low concentration. Temperature programmes of constant ramps gave good separation. A compromise between excellent separation and time of analysis resulted in using temperature ramps of 4.5 oC/min with a start and final temperature of 50 oC and 340 oC, respectively, for AGOs, and 3.5 oC/min with a start and final temperature of 150 oC and 340 oC, respectively for VGOs. A modulation time of 8000 ms and a hot jet duration of 500 ms proved to give good correlation between the 1st separation’s peak widths and the time needed for 2nd dimension separation. Straight run and processed petroleum fractions were analysed by the optimised methods. Constructed templates for dividing the sample’s polarity distribution into groups gave a distribution of volume response of all the compounds within the defined groups. The hydrocarbon analyses of the petroleum fractions were straight forward; volume responses were directly proportional to weight percent of the sample. The hydrocarbon standards gave approximately the same response factor. The same did not apply for sulphur analysis. The standards’ responses were not very reproducible, and the response factors were not similar for the polarity classes. Identification of sulphur compounds in AGOs and VGOs is possible although quantification is not recommended at the present. The methods showed to give good separation of both AGOs and VGOs. Although further optimisation especially of sulphur analysis, is highly encouraged.

Abstract:
In this study, parameters influencing the adsorption of dispersed oil droplets to suspended particulate matter (SPM) in seawater were investigated. The interaction between oil and SPMs can alter the ultimate fate of oil spilled in marine environments, and it is therefore of interest to be able to predict the effect of these interactions. The chosen parameters of this study were sediment type (carbonate sand, quartz sand and clay) and concentration (5-80 g/L seawater), temperature (5-20 °C) and oil type (two crudes, one condensate and a heavy fuel oil). Special attention was given to the effect of adding chemical dispersant to the oil prior to mixing with water and SPMs.The experimental outline included the mechanical generation of oil droplets using an oil droplet generator. Water with oil droplets were added to a beaker with sediment and a suspension was induced by stirring. After settling and filtration, both the water samples and the sediment samples were subject to extraction, clean-up and analysis by GC-FID. A selection of samples was also analysed by GC-MS.The study shows that oil droplets adsorb as a bulk to SPM. An absence of water-soluble oil components adsorbed to the sediment was observed. Oil type, sediment size and the use of chemical dispersant stand out as most influencing on the adsorption properties of oil droplets to SPM in seawater. The effect of varying temperature was not considerable compared to the other parameters in this study. Partitioning of oil components to the water column was also monitored in this study, and found not to be influenced significantly by any of the studied parameters.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A vizsgálatban 606 szakember vett részt. A projekt céljaihoz igazodva ebben a felmérésben a közkönyvtárakban dolgozó könyvtárosok vettek részt. Az online kérdőívet összesen 1785 fő töltötte ki. A felmérés eredményei a teljes magyar közkönyvtári körre nézve általános érvényűnek tekinthetők.

Abstract:
Human beings are constantly improving their cognitive ability via automatic learning from the interaction with the environment. Two important aspects of automatic learning are the visual perception and knowledge acquisition. The fusion of these two aspects is vital for improving the intelligence and interaction performance of robots. Many automatic knowledge extraction and recognition methods have been widely studied. However, little work focuses on integrating automatic knowledge extraction and recognition into a unified framework to enable jointly visual perception and knowledge acquisition. To solve this problem, we propose a Dual Track Multimodal Automatic Learning (DTMAL) system, which consists of two components: Hybrid Incremental Learning (HIL) from the vision track and Multimodal Knowledge Extraction (MKE) from the knowledge track. HIL can incrementally improve recognition ability of the system by learning new object samples and new object concepts. MKE is capable of constructing and updating the multimodal knowledge items based on the recognized new objects from HIL and other knowledge by exploring the multimodal signals. The fusion of the two tracks is a mutual promotion process and jointly devote to the dual track learning. We have conducted the experiments through human-machine interaction and the experimental results validated the effectiveness of our proposed system.
