Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
- The various types of resources mobilised by European social enterprises The objective of this paper is to analyse, on the basis of the substantive definition of the economy (elaborated in the footsteps of Polanyi), the various types of resources mobilised by European social enterprises. European social enterprises use a complex mix of resources based on four types of economic relations: the market, redistribution, the socio-politically embedded market, and the reciprocity. A European typology of Work Integration Social Enterprise (WISEs) is put forward, in order to understand these enterprises' dynamic across national borders.

Abstract:
Abstract Studies by Savage et al. (2013) and Vrooman, Gijsberts and Boelhouwer (2014) introduce new class typologies that combine Bourdieu’s work with latent class analysis. This paper identifies this new research approach as Bourdieusian latent class analysis. We discuss the role of these studies within the social class debate and we review the merits and limitations of this approach. In addition, we show how the class structure of Rotterdam can be empirically established by studying the distribution of economic, social and cultural capital. We use the Neighbourhood Profile data (N = 14,040; 71 neighbourhoods) to develop a class typology that includes eight social groups. This class typology complements conventional indicators of neighbourhood socioeconomic status and can be used to study ‘social mix’ and gentrification.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper analyzes changes to the definitions of “authorized users” contained in electronic resources licenses and embedded in access control technologies from the mid-1990s to the present. In analyzing changes to the license and technology-based definitions, it tracks shifts in major stakeholders’ perceptions of authorized users and describes developments in licensing and access control technologies. The paper demonstrates that the concept of authorized users has been shaped by a mix of social and technical elements, including changes to information providers’ and libraries’ business models and missions, shifts in norms for license terms, and development of technological tools used to facilitate or constrain access.

Abstract:
With the rise of microfinance in developing countries and its evolution to a business model in developed nations, microfinance has fully transitioned to the internet, taking the distinctive form of social lending. However, the marketing trends of emerging peer-to-peer micro-lending websites have been largely unexplored during its rise to recognition due to most studies focusing on financial, economic, political and humanitarian issues in context to microfinance. However, based on a sample of eight popular social lending websites, this paper uses cases to analyze the marketing elements of these sites to better understand how they function and to predict the future.

Abstract:
This paper discusses literature around school mix (the school’s social diversity) and school mixing (the interactions between students/parents from different backgrounds), and their possible relationship with the development of democratic dispositions. I draw on the current global context, which is moulded by a tension between national ideologies driven by democratic values and the challenges posed by increasing levels of social diversity. Studies addressing the possible effects of school mix argue that both democratic and exclusionary dispositions may emerge depending on the form heterogeneity takes, particularly depending on whether school mix is translated or not into school mixing. Based on Bourdieu’s concept of habitus or dispositions, the paper outlines an analytical framework to conceptualize the possibilities for democratic dispositions to emerge through the experience of social difference.

Abstract:
We are entering the end game for this Parliament and so it is now time to focus on the policy horizon. In the run-up to the next election, the government’s pieces will be moved by our fourth Prime Minister since the announcement of the advisory referendum on EU membership in February 2016. The rapidity in turnover of political leadership tells us starkly that there are deep problems with our economic and social performance, relative to expectations and to that of our main trading partners. The overriding narrative is of a kingdom of nations that have taken a huge step backwards in international standing and in the fulfilment of domestic objectives. At this historic moment with the accession of Charles III, we are not this time faced with post-war reconstruction, industrial decline, the need to deregulate or the need to hitch our colours to the rise of the City. It is more a problem of how to bring the country and devolved nations together and aim for economic and social progress for all. That implies both broadening our regional focus and narrowing our gambit to what institutions and policies the UK needs as a small open economy in order to deal with a global economic situation we must take as given and no longer made in our image. No new IMF or World Bank would, for example, offer the UK a seat at the top table, which was certainly the natural order in the first half of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Levitt's famous article, 'Marketing Myopia' (1960), led to widespread acceptance that a marketing orientation is superior to a product orientation and brought the marketing concept to greater prominence. Writers have tended to present the discussion of fundamental concepts in marketing as an historical progression culminating in the marketing concept which is then presented as the ideal orientation, with universal application, for the formulation of an appropriate marketing philosophy. Over the last ten years or so, several writers have questioned this notion; in particular, the importance of an emphasis on product has been stressed. Another matter which has received some attention in the marketing literature is the impact on marketing philosophy of the pressure on firms to behave in a socially responsible manner. The outcome has been the incorporation of this dimension in the marketing concept. In this paper, the authors point out that the selection of marketing concepts by a firm is influenced by the nature of the firm and the conditions prevailing in its environment; the marketing concept is not an automatic choice and it is not appropriate under all circumstances. They argue further that a firm may be better equipped by adopting a marketing philosophy which draws on two or more concepts and that such a 'hybrid' philosophy is more likely to explain the way in which firms shape their marketing philosophy in practice. Under current conditions, all firms are required to consider their stance on social responsibility in formulating strategy. As marketing philosophy is central to strategy formulation, the societal dimension should feature in it; the authors accordingly suggest that this dimension should be incorporated into any of the fundamental concepts comprising a firm's marketing philosophy. This contrasts with suggestions made to date which appear to be limited to the marketing concept.

Abstract:
We present a strategic network formation model based on membership in clubs. Individuals choose affiliations. The set of all memberships induces a weighted network where two individuals are directly connected if they share a club. Two individuals may also be indirectly connected using multiple memberships of third parties. Individuals gain from their position in the induced network and pay membership fees. We study the club congestion model where the weight of a link decreases with the size of the smallest shared club. A trade-off emerges between the size of clubs, the depreciation of indirect connections, and the membership fee. (JEL D71, D85, Z13)

Abstract:
The marketing mix is a key component of social marketing providing one of the differential points in bringing about behavior and social change. There is a dearth of information regarding the strategies used for the mix in social marketing interventions. This systematic review identifies the strategies used in the social marketing mix, product, price, place, promotion, policy, and partnerships, and their associated outcomes, in health behavior change interventions. A systematic literature search was conducted for peer-reviewed articles published in English from 1990 to 2009 that reported social marketing interventions addressing disease prevention, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, HIV, STDs, reproductive health, physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco. Articles must have identified at least 3 of the Ps of the marketing mix, reported the evaluation, and met the 6 social marketing benchmarks criteria. Twenty-four studies describing 17 interventions met the inclusion criteria. The complete marketing mix was identifiable in 5 interventions. Strategies such as removing perceived barriers, using the Internet for placement, applying innovative promotion, involving communities, and supporting policies were identified as current practices. The results identified a number of strategies that showed potential for the marketing mix with important implications for practice.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The French suburbs, or banlieues, have long been associated with marginalization and peripheralization, characterized by unemployment, a high proportion of ethnic minority populations and low education attainment levels. Since 2000, the ‘crisis’ of the banlieue has been addressed through a policy of ‘social mixing’ which aims to promote mixed communities in certain neighbourhoods, to dilute the ‘problematic elements’ of the suburbs. This ‘social sustainability fix’ however has had mixed results. Questions can be raised over whether a policy based on increasing a neighbourhood’s social mix is an appropriate sustainability fix for the suburbs, and whether it has actually resulted in the outcomes that were intended. Rather than encouraging social integration, it is argued here that the policy of social mixing reinforces segregation and has done little to tackle inequalities and social exclusion. We suggest that there are alternative solutions to the challenges of fostering social sustainability in the suburbs, which could be implemented in partnership with citizens and neighbourhoodbased groups (associations) that would be more effective in addressing social sustainability solutions in the future.
