Abstract:
Discourses, values and connotation attached to the concept of social mix in housing studies are strongly shaped by the broad socio-economic and historical context as well as the specifics at national, city, and neighbourhood level. In the 1990s, the notion of social mix entered the housing and urban agenda of many Western European countries in the policy frame of area-based, state-led urban renewal programmes against residential segregation. The 21st century society is characterized by global dynamics and societal trends, such as the growing socio-economic inequalities and residential segregation; the increasing problem of housing affordability affecting a variety of social groups, and the growing urban diversity, which provide new opportunities to reframe the ideal of social mix. Such macro dynamics unfold differently from context to context, due also to the role played by different welfare regimes and housing systems. In this light, the aim of this dissertation is to better understand whether and how contemporary macro trends and societal challenges are reshaping the current framing of social mix, and to provide a better understanding of the role of contextual factors, in particular those related to current developments in welfare and housing systems, in determining different and/or similar patterns of such reframing process. The dissertation specifically looks at how the current framing of social mix is re-shaping housing professionals’ roles, strategies and missions as well as the interactions between tenants and their relationships with professionals. This dissertation compares Italy and the Netherlands, which are characterized by different welfare regimes and housing systems. However, facing rising demand for affordable housing by a widespread and differentiated audience, in both countries policy-makers and practitioners address this emerging need by implementing new social housing projects targeting diverse social groups, which results in a fine-grained social mix between ‘resourceful’ tenants (e.g. students, young households, etc.) and ‘vulnerable’ tenants (e.g. welfare dependents, refugees, etc.). The dissertation is based on case study analysis of two Magic Mix projects, i.e. Startblok Riekerhaven in Amsterdam and Majella Wonen in Utrecht, and three Housing Sociale projects, i.e. Casa dell’Accoglienza, ViVi Voltri and Ospitalità Solidale in Milan and its metropolitan area. Totally, 48 semi-structured interviews with professionals, project managers, policy-makers and one focus group with tenants have been conducted. This dissertation contributes the existing literature on social mix by elaborating a new conceptualization of this notion. While the 1990s-framing of social mix was mainly focused on combating residential segregation at neighbourhood level, central to such new conceptualization of social mix is the promotion of individuals’ self-responsibilisation. The dissertation examines specific strategies that are promoted by professionals to increase tenants’ responsibilities. First, it investigates innovative housing management approaches, e.g. self-management and Social Management, in which tenants’ are assigned wider roles and obligations in the processes of housing management,. Second, it examines the principle of conditionality underling these projects, i.e. allocating social dwellings provided that tenants regularly engage in supportive activities within the housing project. The dissertation shows that the eligibility for new social housing opportunities, which aim to address the widespread problem of affordable housing, entails also new obligations and behavioral patterns for tenants in terms of additional duties towards the community.

Abstract:
This thesis gives to see the future of Cabinda society in the Republic of Angola, country located in Southern Africa. It calls almost all of the public conscience, and especially that of the authorities, the interest of progress of the XXI century, especially in education, integration and development problem of social and cultural construction balanced. Recognizing thatdevelopment of a country depends, among other things, by the education process as a supreme value. Rather every citizenmust be in possession of intellectual and affective openness to the world and knowledge to prepare them for building his own identity, because education is a fundamental basis of human evolution and society. From a sociological point of view, attention to education of people returns to the entry in a modern and democratic society. This education is provided essential empirical implementation of the personal responsibility of Cabinda, which is the first founding document of its ethics. The classic pattern is that this education is provided in a democratic way, with democratic content; that is to say, it goes through the formal education. The fact remains that formal education can also play a role in a process of social change that socialization is needed. To this, this thesis shows that it is in the mix-education based on democratic values, the Cabinda, could become master of its destiny

Abstract:
The order and disorder. This simple phrase sums up the evolution of the Urban Planning Law. Once ambitious, sometimes abstruse but still clear on its objectives, effective, this right has become talkative, messy, and incoherent. The purpose of our research was to understand this relaxation which does not seem to end. To do that, we had to identify the main theme of the discipline : the fight against urban segregation. The L.O.V., as well as the S.R.U. and A.L.U.R. laws confirmed it. The study to fight urban segregation with the urban planning law requires to be addressed under different approaches. The first is very chronological, and refers us to the legal beginning of the material, at the time of the creation of the urban order, which never ceased to grow and develop. It later took us to the criticism of this order, then to its slow dismantling, destruction, and its replacement. It led us finally to the point where masks fell, illusions were dispelled and urban distress appeared ; the moment where public authorities seemed to give credit to what Henri Bergson once said : “Mess is simply the order we do not search for”. This admission of failure was the starting point of our second approach. This obscure right continues to live against winds and waves. The study of treatments of urban segregation illuminates a reality, Governments have focused their attention on cities, and have left out the “peripheral France”. This explains both why this right has maintained so far and is condemned at the same time

Thesis, Paris Est, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PEST1153.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the vote of the orientation law in August 1st, 2003 on urban renewal, housing diversity is at the centre of new national injunctions by the government through the introduction of a new instrument: the diversification of the housing tenure. From the very first urban renewal program planning in France, social mix is used as a tool against poverty concentration. The introduction of housing diversity into the working-class neighbourhoods is therefore not a novelty. But, it has taken today a different turn in France's current urban renewal policy. Indeed, since the implementation of the Agence Nationale pour la Rénovation urbaine (ANRU) (national agency for urban renewal) we observe a shift in the financing sources of the urban renewal policy budget; the public sector has considerably reduced its participation while private investors such as Action Logement have become major investors. Second, we observe a quasi-systematic intervention of two types of private actors on the reconstruction projects, namely indepedant private developers and the Association Foncière Logement (AFL).This new economic setting gives another dimension to the implementation of social diversity in these areas. This notably raises the question of the ability of private actors to realize a public mission while being constrained by the necessity of profitability. The main hypothesis tested in this thesis is that private actors involved in urban renewal adjust their actions in order to provide an offer adapted to the newly targeted market. We test this hypothesis on three different sites: Mantes-la-Jolie (78), Le Blanc-Mesnil (93) and Le Havre (76) in which different diversification strategies have been applied. By investigating the implementation plans of diversification housing on each site, this thesis puts in evidence the different gaps existing between the initial intentions and the programs' achievements, both in terms of housing characteristics and of targeted populations. Such gaps potentially jeopardize the initially announced objectives of social mix

Abstract:
Economic and social changes of old industrial societies have contributed to the transformation of the downtown of many cities. The centripetal flow of capital and population has initiated and intensified in recent decades. The suburbs of cities, initially so attractive, seems to decline for a new type of population who prefers the downtown way of life. This is gentrification. Barcelona, and most recently Marseille, have not escaped this dynamic. Firstly, based on interdisciplinary works, this thesis proposes to record the definition of the process and to grasp the steps and procedures in the field. However, this study leads us to understand the gentrification as an aspect of metropolization, in its economic, urban, social, political and cultural dimensions. Since the 1990s, what have the changes been, that allow us to affirm that "a back to the city" is running? A quantitative approach based on an extensive statistical corpus and the confrontation of these statistical results of the qualitative data, we can answer this question, while revealing an idiosyncratic reality that questions the theory. Finally, the modes and rates of development of a process that is no longer confined to the old and central areas but spreads by capillary action in the inner-suburbs, demonstrates in both north -Mediterranean cities, that there is not one process of gentrification but differentiated processes

Abstract:
In response to increasing patterns of socio-spatial segregation, Swedish cities have adopted policies to promote social mix, which is generally considered positive due to its effect on spatial justice and social cohesion. However, institutional changes have negatively impacted the possibilities of fulfilling this policy objective. Moreover, there is a suggested discrepancy between objective and outcome. This paper is a comparative study on the operationalisation and outcomes of social mix policies in Sweden, focusing on two large-scale urban development projects; Stockholm Royal Seaport and RiverCity Gothenburg. Qualitative content analysis of planning documents and interviews with key actors have been conducted and the results demonstrate that in both cases, social mix has been promoted to some extent by planning for a diverse housing structure. In Gothenburg, additional measures have been taken in order to safeguard affordability. However, the absence of such measures in the case of Stockholm has resulted in the exclusion of low-income households. I argue that while there is a perceived inability among the planners of Stockholm to influence housing costs, the planners of Gothenburg have found ways of utilising the current institutional setting in favor of social mix. By applying a social justice perspective, I conclude that a policy approach safeguarding the affordability of housing is critical for combating residential segregation and spatial injustice.

Abstract:
Promulgated on December 13th 2000, the SRU law decreesed with its article 55 that there should be a 20% minimum limit of social housing in most of the communes located in big urban areas. Therein, it was designed to contribute to the right to housing and above all to promote « social mix ». Although strongly criticized, many times jeopardized, the SRU law was eventually reinforced in 2013 through the rise of the minimum limit up to 25% of social housing. More than 15 years after coming into force, the law entered a phase of development that allows a detailed and objective assessment of this thesis. This study focuses on the analysis of quantitative and qualitative datas on the construction of social housing in the non-law abiding communes of the Yvelines, the department with the highest number of non-law abiding communes on a national level. By doing so, it appears that overall, the non-law abiding communes respect the letter of the law- by building the required social housing - while getting round its spirit - by limiting social mix. Indeed, the social housing that they build have several specific features and at the same time, numerous private housing continue to be set up, making it impossible to reach the demanded percentage. So as to understand the reasons for this partial and biased implementation, it was necessary to study the interplay of stakeholders that the SRU law results in. This survey thus puts forward the fact that it is the everlasting rejection of social housing in the field that hinders the mechanism introduced by the legislator and prevents the SRU law from achieving its intended effect

Lahtinen, Ville. "Assessing the effectiveness of the marketing mix in social marketing." Thesis, Griffith University, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/381271.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates whether a program utilising a full commercial marketing mix (4P) is more effective than a program using a promotion-only approach in increasing fruit and vegetable (FV) intake of children. Additionally, this research examines the effectiveness of the parental component of the same program examining the attitudes, subjective norms, behavioural control and intentions of parents for serving more fruit and vegetables to their children. Finally, the last study investigates the benefits and barriers of parents for serving fruit and vegetables, as separate groups of food, to their children as a first step to enhance the effectiveness of the parent component of the program. This research program responds to previous criticisms in social marketing about the relevance of the marketing mix. While social marketers such as Gordon (2012), Peattie & Peattie (2003), Wood (2008) and Tapp & Spotswood (2013) have criticised the marketing mix their criticisms are not founded on empirical data examining the effectiveness of the 4Ps. Further, systematic social marketing literature reviews show that most social marketing programs do not use the full marketing mix (4P) and most programs rely on promotion strategies (Carins & Rundle-Thiele, 2014b; Kubacki, Ronto, Lahtinen, Pang, & Rundle-Thiele, 2017; Kubacki, Rundle-Thiele, Lahtinen, & Parkinson, 2015; Kubacki, Rundle-Thiele, Pang, & Buyucek, 2015). Therefore before one can criticise the marketing mix or develop new models (see Tapp & Spotswood, 2013) and move beyond the 4Ps altogether, fundamental field experimental research is required to test whether a 4P approach is superior to a 1P approach. As a result, the first research question in Study 1 is: RQ1: Is an intervention using 4Ps more effective than an intervention using only 1P in increasing FV intake for Finnish children? The study demonstrated that the program using a full commercial marketing mix (4Ps) was more effective than the program using a promotion-only approach in creating behaviour change. The children participating in the 4P program showed a significant increase in FV intake at breakfast and breakfast and dinner combined. The children in the 1P program and control group showed no significant differences. Future research could benefit from empirically testing alternative marketing mix models. The second study aims to expand views beyond the downstream audience (children) and focus on an important midstream audience, the parents, who have a significant impact on their children’s FV intake. The social marketing discipline has been known for focusing on downstream audiences, while the importance of midstream and upstream audiences has been recently acknowledged (Gordon, 2013; Hoek & Jones, 2011; Russell-Bennett, Wood, & Previte, 2013). To contribute to the midstream literature in social marketing, the second research question asks: RQ2: Can a social marketing FV campaign increase the attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and intentions for parents to serve more FVs to their children? The results of the study showed some promising effects for the parent component, as there was a significant increase in subjective norms and behavioural control towards parents serving more FV to their children. The control settings showed significant decreases in attitudes and subjective norms of parents when considering to serve FVs to the children. While the results showed some promise, future research is needed to build a more effective parent program component. Finally, Study 3 investigates the barriers and benefits for parents for serving fruits and vegetables for their children. While the previous literature has examined the barriers and benefits of fruits and vegetables as one single group; this study aimed to understand if the barriers and benefits were different for fruits and vegetables. This led to the last two research questions: RQ3a: What are the perceived benefits and barriers for Finnish parents when serving fruit for their children? RQ3b: What are the perceived benefits and barriers for Finnish parents when serving vegetables for their children? The results showed that the benefits and barriers are very different for fruits than they are for vegetables. Additionally, most of the benefits and barriers were fruit or vegetables specific, and cannot be generalised to a whole fruit or vegetable category. Limitations of the research and future research directions are outlined.

Abstract:
Of all the events with which SMEs are confronted, takeover is one of the most important. It can have an effect on foundations, property and power of management, while bringing into question the seller / buyer / employee relationships. Indeed, each of the stakeholders acts according to different processes. While the assignor has to manage the mourning of his company, the rescuer has to limit resistances to change and be accepted, and staff, for their part, have to cooperate. This research takes a particular interest in the key employees of the assignor, qualified here as ?human hard core?. More precisely, it looks to estimate the impact of the preservation of the Hard core in the success of a takeover. In order to comprehend the concept of Hard core, the theory of the Human Specific Assets (HAS) has been considered and, more exactly, the imperfectly Transferable Human Specific theory of Assets (ASHIT) as well as the social Mix. Based on a study of multiple cases, the results raise the idea of the existence of a "latent" human hard core and show the advantages of maintaining the human hard core of the company which represents a fruitful extension of the concept of human hard core of the assignor. Finally, a support tool to assist the management and piloting of SMEs which centered on the management of the human Hard core was proposed

Abstract:
Corporate social responsibility is becoming more and more an integral part in Portuguese companies' management. This paper deals with Portuguese companies corporate social responsibility: (1) why do the companies assume it, (2) in which management areas does this responsibility has implications, (3) what kind of initiatives are there promoted in order to foster this responsibility. It is given a special attention to the relationship between social responsibility and marketing, namely (4) to the way it determines marketing activity and (5) to the way in which it has influence upon the company's brands. Once information available about social responsibility in Portugal does not include data regarding the afore-mentioned aspects, we used a structured questionnaire over a non-probabilistic sample, in order to make this empirical and exploratory study. In order to compare groups, a second sample was selected, a non-probabilistic as well, using other criteria. Using descriptive statistics and indexes computation, the more important reasons, and the lesser ones, why social responsibility is assumed in companies were identified. It was also identified in which management areas social responsibility make itself more, and less, felt, which tools are being used to manage this responsibility and which initiatives are being taken accordingly. Regarding the implications of the new issue of social responsibility upon marketing activity, we assessed quantitatively professionals' perception of it (2.06 points for the main sample and 1.64 for the control group. These values are placed on a scale with a maximum of 4) and its influence upon companies' brands (2.32 points for the main sample and 2.01 for the control group, on a scale up to 4).

Foureaux, Charlotte, and Stephanie Liang.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a big gap in knowledge when it comes to how segregation is influenced by people’s own preferences, which is what we aim to shed light on in this study. Since social mix is a leading concept amongst policy makers in Sweden we also wanted to study whether residents of Halmstad want to live in socially diverse neighbourhoods or not. This study investigates how residents of Halmstad reason about the city’s segregation and the city planners’ use of social and housing mix to combat the residential segregation. Through 106 surveys we determined the main themes of segregation and social mix, which we then where able to explore by using 6 interviews with locals. Our empirical findings were analysed with the help of the following sociological theories: Jenkin's identity theory, May’s theory of belonging, Goffman's stigma theory, Wilkinson and Pickett's definition of the social evaluative threats and Lidskog's theory of public space and the multicultural society. Our findings show that the segregation in Halmstad is largely linked to structural factors such as the economy and the labor and housing market. It is however clear that social and cultural issues related to the feeling of safety, rumors, social identity and different senses of belonging are crucial for the choice of one's residential area. Furthermore, it also shows that a self-chosen segregation exists in the city, where people actively choose residential areas where like-minded residents live. The self-chosen segregation is based on how different groups create their identities and a sense of belonging and safety in different ways. Although our interviewees and respondents saw opportunities in social mix they also problematised the implementation of social mix in a neighbourhood. They argued that economical aspects, such as the housing prices, and social aspects, such as conflicts and fear among different socio-cultural groups, hindered the process of creating social mix.

Wang, R. W. T. "Social mix in central post-reform Shanghai." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1307083/.

Full text
Abstract:
Social mix can be observed in many post-reform Chinese cities, yet the topic has so far remained scarcely researched. Using central Shanghai as a focus, this research asks how socially mixed neighbourhoods have emerged, what is their internal structure, and how have locally-based social interactions been affected by the emergence of social mix. Based on a neighbourhood of 5 housing estates and other relevant examples, this study shows that mixed neighbourhoods have emerged from an unplanned and uncoordinated interplay among new market-driven commodity housing developments, counter-market retention mechanisms on traditional estates, government-led socially-orientated housing projects, residents’ resistance to redevelopment, and the lingering socialist legacy of welfare housing and unclear property rights. Significant differences were found in residents’ socioeconomic attributes, living conditions, tenure and housing expenditure between the traditional, new middle-income, and new upmarket housing. The process of housing redevelopment and the creation of social mix have diminished locally-based social interactions. Residents’ intra-estate interaction is the strongest in traditional estates, lower in the middle-income estate and minimal in upmarket estates. The level of inter-estate interaction in the mixed neighbourhood is weak. The emergence of social mix has brought about a divergence in lifestyles and lifeworlds among the changed set of residents, which is reflected in the spheres of mobility, residential stability, shopping, and children’s education. The level of inter-estate interaction has reduced from the past when the neighbourhood was more socially homogenous. Findings suggest that social mix and a weakening of local social interaction will likely continue, and these will demand more scrutiny considering China’s development agenda on social harmony. Findings here concur with Western studies on mixed communities that social mix does not lead to social mixing. New policies and programmes to foster social interaction should be explored.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to highlight the subject of adolescent dating violence, focusing on digital dating violence, and therefore contribute with knowledge regarding social work amongst young people. This is achieved through researching young people's views on domestic- and adolescent dating violence, gender and social media. In the government's national strategy regarding violence against women, domestic violence is included as part and young girls are pinpointed as a particularly targeted group. One of the viewpoints in the strategy is that focus should be on stereotypical gender and masculinity norms to prevent violence against women. Furthermore The empirical material of the study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with six people between the age of 18-21. The material has further been analyzed through a gender perspective to explain the separation of masculinity and femininity and thereby the superiority of the male gender, since domestic violence and adolescent dating violence can be seen as a result of this. Our result shows that the youths of today experience that stereotypical gender norms have a big impact on both their everyday life but also in their interpersonal relationships. They express a perceived pressure to act accordingly to what is viewed as stereotypically male or female, which is expressed as limiting. Additionally the result is showing of young peoples perception of an inadequacy in knowledge regarding the subject of dating- and domestic violence, as well as a desire to know more. Their experiences show a divide between youths and the adult world today, which is largely due to a lack of understanding towards young people and their relationship with the internet. The result shows a shortage of trust towards the adult world. Finally the study demonstrates the emphasis that should be made on an increasing knowledge about adolescent dating violence both amongst youths and professionals, in order to prevent it.

Abstract:

Wu, Min-Lin (Winnie). "The relationship between chronic disease self-efficacy and nutritional status, functional ability and quality of life in older adults at risk of hospital readmission." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2012. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/50925/1/Min-Lin_Wu_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Background and significance: Older adults with chronic diseases are at increasing risk of hospital admission and readmission. Approximately 75% of adults have at least one chronic condition, and the odds of developing a chronic condition increases with age. Chronic diseases consume about 70% of the total Australian health expenditure, and about 59% of hospital events for chronic conditions are potentially preventable. These figures have brought to light the importance of the management of chronic disease among the growing older population. Many studies have endeavoured to develop effective chronic disease management programs by applying social cognitive theory. However, limited studies have focused on chronic disease self-management in older adults at high risk of hospital readmission. Moreover, although the majority of studies have covered wide and valuable outcome measures, there is scant evidence on examining the fundamental health outcomes such as nutritional status, functional status and health-related quality of life. Aim: The aim of this research was to test social cognitive theory in relation to self-efficacy in managing chronic disease and three health outcomes, namely nutritional status, functional status, and health-related quality of life, in older adults at high risk of hospital readmission. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed for this research. Three studies were undertaken. Study One examined the nutritional status and validation of a nutritional screening tool; Study Two explored the relationships between participants. characteristics, self-efficacy beliefs, and health outcomes based on the study.s hypothesized model; Study Three tested a theoretical model based on social cognitive theory, which examines potential mechanisms of the mediation effects of social support and self-efficacy beliefs. One hundred and fifty-seven patients aged 65 years and older with a medical admission and at least one risk factor for readmission were recruited. Data were collected from medical records on demographics, medical history, and from self-report questionnaires. The nutrition data were collected by two registered nurses. For Study One, a contingency table and the kappa statistic was used to determine the validity of the Malnutrition Screening Tool. In Study Two, standard multiple regression, hierarchical multiple regression and logistic regression were undertaken to determine the significant influential predictors for the three health outcome measures. For Study Three, a structural equation modelling approach was taken to test the hypothesized self-efficacy model. Results: The findings of Study One suggested that a high prevalence of malnutrition continues to be a concern in older adults as the prevalence of malnutrition was 20.6% according to the Subjective Global Assessment. Additionally, the findings confirmed that the Malnutrition Screening Tool is a valid nutritional screening tool for hospitalized older adults at risk of readmission when compared to the Subjective Global Assessment with high sensitivity (94%), and specificity (89%) and substantial agreement between these two methods (k = .74, p < .001; 95% CI .62-.86). Analysis data for Study Two found that depressive symptoms and perceived social support were the two strongest influential factors for self-efficacy in managing chronic disease in a hierarchical multiple regression. Results of multivariable regression models suggested advancing age, depressive symptoms and less tangible support were three important predictors for malnutrition. In terms of functional status, a standard regression model found that social support was the strongest predictor for the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, followed by self-efficacy in managing chronic disease. The results of standard multiple regression revealed that the number of hospital readmission risk factors adversely affected the physical component score, while depressive symptoms and self-efficacy beliefs were two significant predictors for the mental component score. In Study Three, the results of the structural equation modelling found that self-efficacy partially mediated the effect of health characteristics and depression on health-related quality of life. The health characteristics had strong direct effects on functional status and body mass index. The results also indicated that social support partially mediated the relationship between health characteristics and functional status. With regard to the joint effects of social support and self-efficacy, social support fully mediated the effect of health characteristics on self-efficacy, and self-efficacy partially mediated the effect of social support on functional status and health-related quality of life. The results also demonstrated that the models fitted the data well with relative high variance explained by the models, implying the hypothesized constructs under discussion were highly relevant, and hence the application for social cognitive theory in this context was supported. Conclusion: This thesis highlights the applicability of social cognitive theory on chronic disease self-management in older adults at risk of hospital readmission. Further studies are recommended to validate and continue to extend the development of social cognitive theory on chronic disease self-management in older adults to improve their nutritional and functional status, and health-related quality of life.

Zouari, Nabil. Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSE2022.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the role of commerce in a large underprivileged district. In particular, it evaluates the capacity of a local shopping centre, which some public actors aim to destroy, to be a place of opportunity for its inhabitants. To do so, the thesis approaches commerce as a “total” social system, by multiplying the points of view, including planning, urban design, economic, social as well as political perspectives. Commercial polarities of French large social housing estates have, since the 1970s, experienced a decline in their commerciality. This evolution is generally explained by various factors, including the impoverishment of the neighbourhoods in which they are located, or the deployment of hypermarkets on the outskirts of French cities. Architectural and urban design errors are also questioned, especially the disconnection of these places from pedestrian and motorised traffic. At the same time, following the population dynamics within large suburban complexes, the image of these commercial polarity has become ethnicized. From there, urban renewal in disadvantaged neighbourhoods is generally accompanied by major urban transformations and the introduction of regulatory tools. However, some of the commercial polarities involved in urban renewal are economically healthy with important sales figures, low vacancy rates and low turnover. This is notably the case of the commercial polarity of the Mas du Taureau in Vaulx-en-Velin. This thesis thus proposes to understand how this suburban shopping area has been able to adapt. The thesis begins by exploring the resilience capacities of the Mas du Taureau retailers and shopkeepers and their economic development strategies. Those strategies are based on a regime of mutual knowledge and a dense network of sociability. Besides, the shopping centre has been able to radiate on a metropolitan scale. Indeed, the survey shows that the good economic health and high sales of the shopping centre exceed the standards of proximity polarity. The thesis therefore analyzes the main factors that allowed this unplanned shift from proximity polarity to metropolitan shopping centrality. The latter type of centrality is sustained by a bi-weekly market and numerous sedentary businesses (butcher's shops, bakeries, restaurants) that radiate out over a vast quadrant of Lyon metropolitan area. The attractiveness of the Mas du Taureau shopping centre makes it a minority center approaching the standards of "super diversity", a concept introduced in 2007 by Steven Vertovec. It appears that the shopping centre's ability to attract customers from outside the neighbourhood is based on a game of "ethnic" specialisations full of make-believes. However, the thesis focuses on a few locally trained entrepreneurs and ethnic markers that give the Mas du Taureau's commercial offer an image of minority centrality. Finally, the thesis examines the point of view of local public decision-makers. They often perceive this market space through the prism of communitarianism, leading to new forms of public regulation. The commercial polarity is thus administered by powerful management tools that place it at the centre of a lasting tension. As of today, the economic success of Mas du Taureau commercial polarity is not acknowledged by local public actors and its maintenance is minimal. Through the analysis of the current urban renewal project, the thesis shows the representations of local actors that underlie the project to destroy a dynamic shopping centre in order to rebuild another one with an uncertain future

Abstract:
Since the foundation of the Nordic welfare state, architecture and urban planning have been central elements in the creation of post‐war, modern welfare cities. Ideals of healthy, socially conscious and productive capitalist futures have been articulated through housing design, planning strategies and infrastructure projects. Today however, the welfare city is under pressure due to the current crises our cities are facing. Central issues to these crises are housing unaffordability, rising inequality and socio‐ economic segregation. Over the past few decades, urban planners have become more concerned about these themes in relation to our cities. Housing policies have taken a turn to a more market‐ oriented approach and while there are high investments in real estate, affordable housing supply is still lacking behind. On the other hand, new housing policies are arising that should help make cities fairer and more just for everyone, often referred to as inclusionary housing policies. In this research, various housing policies are being investigated to explore how inclusionary housing addresses the current housing distribution and rising inequality in our cities. To introduce this research, a theoretical framework is outlined, introducing four different concepts that revolve around affordable housing: inclusionary housing policies, socio‐economic segregation, social mix and people‐based policies. This is followed by a methodology section and analysis consisting of two separate parts. First, a literature review is conducted to see how each of the described concepts relate to the Nordic context, after which the geographical focus is laid on Copenhagen, Denmark. In the second part of the analysis, a socio‐economic and geographical analysis is conducted, investigating the distribution of different tenure types in the city of Copenhagen. In this case study, a total of four different tenure types are analysed, namely (1) owner‐occupied housing, (2) private rental housing, (3) housing cooperatives and (4) non‐profit housing. Geographical information systems were used to map the change in distribution of each tenure type, for the period of 2000 to 2021. In addition, possible relations to patterns of socio‐economic segregation are explored, by comparing the change in distribution of tenure types to changes in distribution of average income levels. A significant overlap was found between new housing development areas and areas showing a higher average disposable income in 2019 compared to 2000. In regard of this, recent literature have warned that more market involvement in housing is expected to contribute to income disparities and segregation (Van Ham et al., 2016). The obtained results of this research can be considered in light of this, confirming that the distribution of tenure types is related to patterns of segregation. While this research brings new insights on housing developments in Copenhagen, it is suggested that the case of Copenhagen provides more widely applicable warnings for other cities undergoing a similar neoliberalization of the local housing market. This calls for a political shift in housing development, in which housing must be approached as a public good. On top of that, affordable housing should be made accessible and equally distributed around cities, to avoid further processes of socio‐spatial segregation and polarization. To achieve this, political and ideological strategies must be restored in order to build further on a modern welfare state, providing affordable and good housing for all.

Abstract:
The role of internet and the digitalized world are more relevant than ever before. The new phenomena of digital marketing has created a paradigm shift of existing marketing with new ways to market. Social media plays a significant role in this change, since it allows businesses to easily engage with its customers and to maintain relationships. For small and local businesses, this change has created great opportunities to interact more with the local audience. However, not all such businesses have the sufficient knowledge to optimize the usage of social media. The focus of the study is to explore the current usage of social media in local businesses context. Furthermore, we will suggest social media marketing strategies that will help local business to improve its customer relations. The qualitative approach is applied in this study by using interviews and observations, which is the main source of primary data collection. The conclusion was that local grocery stores still rely much more on traditional marketing methods. However, local grocery stores still use and value social media, but most are unclear of the true benefits and strategies when using social media. Lacking strategies consist of planning the social media marketing strategies, but also lacks the formal management of critical situations on social media. Overall, local stores perform well in building relations with its customers using social media however, there is a scope of further improvements.

The use of social media has increased considerably the recent years, andusers share a lot of their daily life in social media. Many of the users uploadimages to photo-sharing applications, and categorize their images withtextual tags. Users do not always use the best tags to describe the images, but add tags to get "likes" or use tags as a status update. For this reason, searching on tags are unpredictable, and does not necessary return the resultthe user expected. This thesis studies the impact of expanding queries in image searches withterms from knowledge bases, such as DBpedia. We study the methodsTF-IDF, Mutual Information and Chi-square to nd related candidates forquery expansion. The thesis reports on how we implemented and appliedthese methods in a query expansion setting. Our experiments show thatChi-square is the method that yields the best result with the best averageprecision, and was slightly better than a search without query expansion.TF-IDF gave the second best result with query expansion, and Mutual informationwas the method that gave the worst average precision. Queryexpansion with related terms is an exiting eld, and the information fromthis thesis gives a good indication that this is a eld that should be moreexplored in the future.

This Thesis shows how Universities are engaged in a very competitive market place. Marketing services is analyzed as a possible tool for Universities to face this demanding socioeconomic environment. An extensive research of publications brings important information about the weakness of strategic marketing in higher education and on the other hand gives some evidences about how the more successful universities are using marketing management. Using all this information a general model of marketing management for universities is proposed. This model is formed with a general methodological steps to connect three main elements, segmentation, positioning and strategic guidelines. Finally a particular vision of marketing mix is proposed as well, a 10P’s mix especial for the complexity of higher education structure.

The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of women's violence against men in intimate relationships, get an idea of what forms of expression that this type of violence has and to highlight the men's experiences of violence. There is little scientific research in the field in Sweden. Crime Prevention Council has determined that eight percent of all complaints involving domestic violence in 2010, reported by men over 18 years. You can only speculate on how large number of unreported cases is among abused men. The international studies highlight that the abused men feel ashamed of having been subjected to violence by a female partner. I have been based this essay on two theoretical premises, Per Isdal theory of "violence perspective" and Elaine Bergqvist's definition of the suppression technique. The study was conducted through a qualitative content analysis. This type of method used to interpret the various texts, and to this study, three autobiographies was analyzed.    The results from the survey highlights that all men have been subjected to extensive financial, material, latent and psychological violence. Two men have been subjected to regular physical violence and one of the men has been the victim of sexual violence. The discussion highlighted that violence against men in intimate relationships is undetectable and taboo and that the phenomenon must be recognized and made more visible. The conclusion of this study was that the abused men feel ashamed to seek help but that is also exists lack of adequate help and support to give to men which has been abused.

Abstract:
People in Sweden are living longer than ever before, as research and improvements in medical care become progressively more advanced. Yet, absenteeism related to stress and clinical burnout has increased dramatically in the past decade. The purpose of this study is to investigate employers’ support functions regarding rehabilitation from clinical burnout, from the perspective of social workers. The research was conducted using qualitative, semi-structured interview sessions with 16 social workers that either have been or are suffering from clinical burnout. The main theory used was House’s theory on different types of social support, which classifies social support into four categories. The results show that the interviewees describe emotional support in ways that do not entirely correlate with House’s theory. The interviewees emphasised the importance of the support from family and friends, that they never stopped calling or texting. This especially entails the importance of someone recognizing the person’s needs without being asked to do so, being willing to listen, assisting in understanding and processing the anxiety, as well as offering a sense of emotional security and community. The majority of respondents stressed the crucial role of managers in their return to work, for example through continuous monitoring, follow-ups and adaptation of tasks. Relatedly, most respondents meant that they lacked a way of fully recovering. The absolute majority of those claiming to lack different kinds of support from managers. Roughly half of said respondents also experienced the lack of an insufficient sense of influence and autonomy in the process of returning to work. This study shows that emotional support from the employer has great positive effects on rehabilitation and the possibility for social workers to return to work following clinical burnout.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible relationship between social mix and the quality of life in housing. Quality of life is measured by levels of satisfaction, social integration, mobility and freedom of choice, etc. This study has identified some factors which may have an effect on the quality of life in socially mixed housing projects. This study has formulated general observations from these factors which could influence the way the built environment is shaped, especially ways in which residents, can or cannot, appreciate and tolerate social mix. The evidence indicates that design, quality of construction, good management, and the overall environment are much more important for the acceptance and satisfaction of the residents than the question of social mix. Even so, the findings indicate that some of the positive and negative quality of life aspects derive from social mix.

Fu, Yuen-kei, and 傅婉琪. "Can mix-tenure alleviate social stigma in public rental housing?" Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/194920.

Full text
Abstract:
Social stigma on public housing is a deep-rooted and unsolvable problem, places with large-scale public housing are perceived as concentration of unemployment and crimes in which outsiders are reluctant to visit those ghettos. Some empirical researches endeavored to argue social stigma on public housing can be abated by diversifying the tenure type, while UK government is a typical example in implementing mix tenure policy. However, the situation of Hong Kong seems different, social stigma on public housing is less apparent than western countries while living in public housing is sometimes perceived as fortunate due to low rent cost and good quality. In Hong Kong, government has not adopted any mix tenure policy whereas mix tenure of public housing, mix of renters and owners, is an unintended consequence of Tenant Purchase Scheme (TPS). In order to understand why social stigma seems less apparent in Hong Kong, this research is going to examine, first, the situation of social stigma on public housing in particular to Lam Tin district where a place with high density of public housing and mix tenure, second, if mix-tenure can alleviate social stigma on public housing in Hong Kong in which the research area will be focus on the aspects of unemployment and security because public housing is perceived as concentration of unemployment and crimes. In regard to the above research question, two sets of questionnaires were conducted to both residents living in TPS estates and private estates in order to understand their different perceptions on the unemployment and security of public housing, and thereby the survey result will be compared with the actual statistics from governmental bodies. Generally speaking, the survey analysis indicated that both sides of resident have apparent social stigma on the security of public housing while unemployment is less seen. What is more, it is interesting that the survey findings are different from the actual situation. Although residents believed that the crime rate is higher in public housing than private housing, there is neither positive nor negative relation between the variables of high density of public housing and crime rates. Social stigma on security was apparently seen from the survey in which majority of respondents agreed with high crime rate in public housing, yet Hong Kong government is not intended to solve the problem as what UK government did because of its historical political philosophy and financial constraints. For instance, Hong Kong government is reluctant to restrict the private developers through mix tenure policy since it would affect the historical philosophy of free economy for Hong Kong. Second, governors are accountable to explain how the public money was spent, and hence government is sensitive on spending large amount of public money to improve the security service and system. In view of the political and financial considerations, it is believed that tackling social stigma on public housing would put at lower priority in government's agenda. Last but not least, since the survey data is only collected in Lam Tin due to time and cost limits, the findings are not extensive and could not apply to all districts of Hong Kong especially for those areas without mix-tenure. In this regard, to have a further analysis on social stigma of Hong Kong public housing, author suggested widening the data collection to conduct a more comprehensive survey.

Owen, Kirsten. "Youth in the mix : an exploration of young people's position in a neighbourhood designed for social mix." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6986/.

Full text
Abstract:
Social mix was a common feature of many New Labour neighbourhood-based policies. Within this vision young people are socially constructed as catalysts for social mixing. It was imagined that both their presence and use of local amenities would ensure interaction across pre-existing social divides. Using an innovative mixed methods approach, the research investigated whether young people in a mixed tenure neighbourhood fulfilled this vision. The thesis argues that a number of limitations exist to this vision for young people in the social mix agenda. Young people’s access to amenities such as public space and schools, key sites in this vision, are limited and controlled thereby reducing opportunities for social mixing. Furthermore, processes operating beyond the mixed tenure neighbourhood work to undermine social mix aspirations. Most notably, young people, especially those perceived to be from disadvantaged backgrounds, are socially constructed as ‘other’ and to be avoided, in direct conflict to social mix constructions. Rather than pre-existing social divides being abolished, the thesis proposes that those with the most power ensure that such divides are maintained and even strengthened.

Abstract:
There is no doubt that Covid-19 has affected the world on several different levels. However, it is less clear how the wellness industry has had to adapt to the Government's and the Public Health Agency's recommendations and restrictions. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how gym companies have adapted their marketing mix and their social media marketing as a strategy for taking social responsibility during the Covid-19 pandemic. Empirical information has mainly been collected through interviews with respondents from Nordic Wellness and Studio Aktiverum, which are two different gym companies in Sweden. They have been interviewed about aspects of their attitude towards Covid-19 and their use of social media. Data has also been collected through observations and information on the company's social media platforms. A mixed method was used to link the empirical findings to the theory. The authors of this thesis discovered 5 different themes, namely, measures - training, customer response, challenges and opportunities, marketing communication and finally training support. The overall picture showed that the case companies were hit hard by the crisis, but that they still managed to continue their business by adjusting their marketing mix. Social media has been a useful tool for the case companies as they have been able to market their activities and offers, which has been especially valuable during times of crisis when budgets and income are lower.

Abstract:
The research implements interactive music processes involving sound synthesis and symbolic treatments within a single environment. The algorithms are driven by classical instrumental performance through hybrid systems called hyperinstruments, in which the sensing of the performance gestures leads to open and goal-oriented generative music forms. The interactions are composed with MAX/Msp, designing contexts and relationships between real-time instrumental timbre analysis (sometimes with added inertial motion tracking) with a gesture-based idea of form shaping. Physical classical instruments are treated as interfaces, giving rise to the need to develop unconventional mapping strategies on account of the multi-dimensional and interconnecting quality of timbre. Performance and sound gestures are viewed as salient energies, phrasings and articulations carrying information about human intentions, in this way becoming able to change the musical behaviour of a composition inside a coded dramaturgy. The interactive networks are designed in order to integrate traditional music practices and “languages” with computational systems designed to be self-regulating, through the mediation of timbre space and performance gestural descriptions. Following its classic definition, technology aims to be mainly related not to mechanical practices but rather to rhetorical approaches: for this reason the software often foresees interactive scores, and must be performed in accordance with a set of external verbal (and video) explanations, whose technical detail should nevertheless not impair the most intuitive approach to music making.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis reports on a study which investigated the application of social media in teaching Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) in a University of Brunei. The aim was to complement the on-campus delivery of this module, encourage student engagement and produce more active than passive learners. However, tensions existed between social media and the content of the course because of the potential of social media to drown and influence Bruneian Malay cultures and Islamic beliefs in a way that is not consistent with MIB. A questionnaire to 362 undergraduate students at the University of Brunei Darussalam taking the PB1501 MIB module in the semester 1 2012/2013 provided an initial sense of social media use and expectations. Six MIB teachers were also selected to represent different perspective of using social media in MIB module. Furthermore, the observation of ten MIB Facebook groups spaces and content analysis of ten MIB Facebook groups' transcripts produced information on teaching and learning activities as well as findings as to how teachers facilitate student engagement. The findings of the study indicate that whilst social media is a tool that should be able to solve the pedagogical problems in the MIB course, at the same time cultural obstacles are perceived by some teachers in this particular setting, impacting on its acceptance. Findings suggest that the implementation of social media such as Facebook in order to solve a pedagogical problem have raised tensions in this specific cultural environment. The research also shows the MIB teachers have mixed feelings about the fact that social media could complement MIB education. A way of conceiving the tensions between these issues is provided by the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework developed by Koehler and Mishra (2009), which is used to understand teacher decisions with respect to MIB, MIB pedagogy and social media (TPACK). This shows the connections and interactions between the content of MIB, the MIB pedagogy and social media.
