Pei, Long. "Evaluation of environmental impacts of buildings in China." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UPSLM068.
Full textThe urbanisation process in China brings a high pressure on the environment. The highest potential to reduce these impacts corresponds to decisions made during the building’s design phase, which can be supported by numerical simulation. This thesis is dedicated to the study of three boundary conditions related to the energy and environmental performance evaluation of buildings in China: - The ground: a ground coupled heat pump model is proposed integrating a fast calculation ground heat exchanger model for a large-scale boreholes field. This model can be used to improve the energy performance of the system in the design and operation phases. - The microclimate: a site-specific weather file generation method which can provide local hourly air temperature is proposed, accounting for the urban heat island effect. The effects of the microclimate on the building’s energy performance are quantitatively investigated. - The background system for life cycle assessment: the effects of the spatial and temporal variation of the electricity production mix in China on the environmental impacts are investigated. The environmental database is adapted to the Chinese national and local context. The results show that the environmental impacts of buildings could be more reasonably evaluated by considering these three boundary conditions

Full textDuring the design phase of an electrical generator, the topology is generally imposed by preliminary criteria. This thesis aims at providing a decision support for the choice of high power generator structures. The interest for high efficiency machines is driven by strong environmental objectives. Consequently, understanding the origin of losses in power generation machines is a major issue. Thus, a methodology for iron loss calculation is developed for high power generators. In the energy production and conversion sectors, Hybrid Excitation Synchronous Machines have a great potential to respond to the challenges of energy transition. It is important to quantify the impact of these new structures compared with existing solutions. This thesis proposes analytical and lumped models to design a set of generator structures. The modeling approach is also compared with two high power generators, including one for a direct drive wind turbine. Then, this modeling is used in an optimization design process. The optimal Pareto structures are compared according to different specifications. These optimized designs show significant gains compared to the existing solutions, especially on wind profile from a Weibull probability density function

Full textRational management of the environment requires knowledge of the costs of environmental impacts. This thesis seeks to define methods for assessing the health costs of atmospheric pollution in order to apply them to the valuation of damages induced by the fossil fuel-based electricity generation. The multifacetted aspects of health maintenance and the principle of sovereignty of individuals' preferences require to look beyond the mere market prices of health expenses. They call for the measurement of the loss of wellbeing resulting from health degradation or the increase in death risk. Theoritical answers to measurement problem of environmental damages have been provided by methods developed in the field of envirommental economics. Indirect market methods used to reveal individuals'preferences in the field of morbidity and mortality have proved to lack efficacy. The examination of health-related contingent valuations shows that individuals make hypothetical trade-offs between money and changes in their wellbeing. This evidence weakens the theory set forth by Kahneman and Knetsch (1992) developed around the existence of embedding effects. Although monetary measurements of variations in satisfaction are undeniably a function of the change in security that individuals are proposed with, their elasticity seems particularly low. This characteristic is observed in both areas of morbidity and mortality. The relative imprecision of contigent valuations in these areas leads to the problem of individuals' capacity to make clear-cut trade-offs between their income and their security. Such an issue calls for cautious utilization of contigent valuations in health damages assessments, in particular as this applies directly to the setting of an optimal pollution level in the framework of public health policies

Full textThe European Union is pursuing a major policy to develop renewable energy aimed at increasing its share to 20 % in total energy consumption in 2020. In this context, France has set up a policy to support renewable electricity generation, through support mechanisms that directly subsidize this generation. However, this mode of support faces several issues, which question its durability. On the one hand, the evolution of the internal electricity market policy renews the question of the compatibility of the support mechanisms with the provisions of European Union law on free movement of goods and State aid. On the other hand, the significant development of renewable electricity generation risks threatening the balance of the French electricity system. In order to cope with these obstacles, France has adopted a major reform of these support mechanisms and has set up several linked mechanisms aimed at adapting the growth of renewable electricity generation to the constraints posed by the electricity system. By using some recent developments of the positive law and the doctrines developed by the institutional players in the internal electricity market, the thesis evaluates the capacity of this reform to adapt the policy of support for renewable electricity generation to these legal and systemic constraints

This present thesis manuscript studies the new Thermo-hydraulic process CAPILI and its respective applications especially the production of electricity for houses and for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC). The performance of the new process CAPILI have been evaluated firstly on steady state; and secondly by a dynamic study based on equivalent Gibbs system which was performed to evaluate more precisely the performance of such engine and optimize its different components. Finally after the implementation of a simplified experimental CAPILI engine and the validation of the different results, the dynamic behavior and the performances of a small CAPILI-OTEC plant, of about 10kWe, have been simulated

Full textMixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is a very popular and useful framework to model industrial optimization problems. This success is due to the facility to model complex optimization problems, the work can be focused on modeling, with a black box generic resolution to optimality with Branch&Bound (B&B) algorithm, or with a specialized decomposition algorithm. If MILP made lots of progresses on the last decades, it is often not sufficient to tackle real world size instances. In such cases, heuristic methods are commonly used to find good quality solutions, without any guarantee to reach the optimum and any proven bound to the optimum. Our work focus on two complex optimization problems from energy management. First application is a discretized daily Unit Commitment Problem of thermal units with specific dynamic constraints. Second application comes from the EURO/ROADEF 2010 challenge, scheduling problem of nuclear power plants' outages for maintenances and refueling. In both cases the methodology was first to model efficiently the considered problem with a MILP compact formulation, and analyze the frontal resolution's limits with B&B. Decomposition methods could also be investigated, before the exact methods are derived in a matheuristic, to be able to tackle real size instances. In particular, Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) with MILP neighborhoods gave outstanding results on our problems. Our work allowed to estimate the impacts of usual and natural hypothesis. Furthermore, we derived dual bounds for these optimizations problems

Full textToday, the Overseas departments have more than 25% of photovoltaic systems of the French territory. French Guiana is itself equipped with a park of more than 600 kWc, 75% being located in isolated areas. This leads to the problem of the installation of a suitable maintenance policy related mainly to the difficulties of provisioning raw materials and spare parts, to the lack of qualified local manpower and to the complexity to give a fast diagnosis of the installation. Aiming to reach a quality of the provided service, it proves to be crucial to develop a diagnosis tool of the different breakdowns and defects which can occur on the production chain. On the basis of research element of the Thesis of Miss Sidonie SALVAT, illustrating in detail the philosophy of the preventive maintenance, the work of this memory presents the development of a tool for functional simulation to validate these first results. By the realization of models for the simulation of each system subset, including a statistical modelling of the solar resource and load, we present a detailed analysis of the dysfunctions. This tool, which proves to be a key element of the diagnosis development, allows the use of detection methods based on the principle of the pattern recognition. The supervised training realize a classification by the search for a parametric discriminating function minimizing the quadratic error on the basis. The algorithms carrying out the real time monitoring of the system in presence of defects are established in an experimental kit representing with reduced scale the production of an individual generator. The experimental detection procedures are then tested on production and regulation defects, and compared with those obtained by simulations under the same operating conditions

Full textThe objective of this thesis was to assess the feasibility of the microbial fuel cell technology for the production of electrical energy coupled with the treatment of pulp and paper effluents. The first part of work showed that various pulp and paper effluents are suitable to form efficient anodic biofilms. When the effluent was supplemented with acetate and the anode polarized between at -0.3 V/SCE, current densities of 12 A/m² and Coulombic efficiencies up to 90% were obtained. When effluents were provided as the sole substrate, current densities reached 6 A/m² and Coulombic efficiencies 30%, with COD removal around 50%. The optimal anodic biofilms were associated with associated with abiotic air cathodes to design complete microbial fuel cells. Power densities from 294 mW/m² to 596 mW/m² were obtained with two different effluents

A high-mix, make-to-order production system can become inefficient when non-value added operations consume too much time, space or labour. To address these issues, cell re-layout is conducted and a CONWIP system is proposed. The cell re-layout started with data collection on current layout, product mix and routings, then the current layout was modified to develop several alternatives, and finally the best alternative was selected based on a set of criteria. The Pull system design began with comparison between Kanban and CONWIP with respect to an actual production system, and then the CONWIP system was selected and a sample case study based on ARENA 12.0 was included to study the characteristics of CONWIP. Finally, transformation of the actual production system to CONWIP was studied in ARENA simulation to determine its optimal CONWIP setting. It can be concluded that the cell layout resulted in improved operator efficiency and savings in area occupied, while the CONWIP system leads to reduction in amount of work-in-process, and stabilization of manufacturing lead time.

Full textThe Central African Republic is one of the countries in Central Africa the most affected by a serious energy crisis. Recurrent failures of facilities inherited from colonization and untimely cuts in electrical power endanger the social development and security of Central African citizens. In this context of political, technological and institutional crisis, my thesis questions in particular problems in the management, production and transmission of skills within the maintenance crews of electrical power plants owned by the ENERCA energy company. On the basis of new concepts, theories and methods in the anthropology of knowledge, this study focuses on deciphering the dynamics that structure production, trade and the relationships with knowledge as well as issues of access to such technical knowledge and the possibilities for their promotion to benefit a responsible public service

Full textThe issue of design of stand-alone systems for the generation of electricity with renewable energies is composed of two parts, the sizing of the different components, and the choice of the energy management in hybrid systems, which include a controllable energy source. If the two questions have been thus treated separately for many systems of varied sizes, on the other hand the choice of the strategy of management of the most efficient energy management according to the sizing remains an unaddressed topic. This is exactly the topic of this thesis. Applied to the interconnected decentralised production, the goal is to know if the system control strategy should be reconsidered following a power change of the components. Detailed modelling also made it possible to contribute to the discussion regarding the choice between connection by dc current or ac current, by comparisons of performances of the systems

Full textThe subject of this thesis consists of an analysis of the relationship between electricity consumption and Gross Domestic Product from the perspective of Competitive Intelligence. More specifically, it analyzes the evolution of the electrical intensity of economic activity from 2003 to 2012 in the developed countries of the G7, and then estimates their electricity needs from 2013 to 2022. Part one attempt to explore theoretical and practical aspects of Competitive Intelligence to understand and apply them, while part two is devoted to the empirical analysis itself.Concerning the latter, our results are as follows:First, the electrical intensity curves of two countries—Canada and the United States—dominate those of other developed countries; thus, the economies of these two North American countries are more energy-hungry than those of Japan and the countries of the European Union. The overall temporal evolution of electricity consumption per GDP unit over a ten-year period (2003-1012) has gone down in five countries: Canada (-12%), the United Kingdom (-5.3%), the United States (-5%), France (-4%), and Germany (-3%). On the other hand, this evolution has gone the other direction in Japan (+5%) and Italy (+6%). The effect of “structure” is negative across all analyzed data, suggesting general “tertiarisation”. However, the effect of “electricity efficiency” is mixed: it is negative in the United States and Canada, but positive for the rest of group.Second, estimations indicate an overall growth in electricity demand across all G7 countries from 2013 to 2022. Additionally, electrical elasticity coefficients/GDP units are down in all countries except Italy. This tells us that the average annual demand for electricity in these countries should increase at a slower rate than their respective GDPs.Lastly, the primary research perspectives that appear at the beginning of this thesis concern the transposition of our model of analysis (energetic intelligence) onto other forms of energy such as oil, natural gas, coal, and renewable energy sources. In the end, this model could be useful to economic and political authorities (governments, private companies, NGOs, IGOs, etc.) as an instrument of economic, energy, and environmental policy
Nepveu, François. "Production décentralisée d’électricité et de chaleur par système Parabole/Stirling : application au système EURODISH." Perpignan, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PERP1268.
Full textSince July 2004, a 10 kW el Dish/Stirling unit is in operation at the PROMES laboratory in Odeillo in France. This system is one of the several country reference units of the EnviroDish project. In the area of this project, the objective of this doctorate is to evaluate the technico-economical potential of this micro-concentrated solar plant. In a first time, after an introduction on the development potential of the concentrated solar plant, a state of art concerning Dish/Stirling systems is achieved. In a second time, the EURODISH system operation is described and the instantaneous, daily and monthly performances and operation experiences of this system are presented on a period from July 2004 to February 2008. In one hand, the solar to electricity efficiency has reached instantaneous and monthly record values for a EURODISH unit of 23. 6 % and 22 % respectively. But in the other hand, the system reliability is too low and 963 breakdowns have been noticed. The next chapter presents a global thermal model of the energy conversion of the EURODISH Dish/Stirling unit, from solar energy to electricity provided to the grid. In addition to study problem linked to the modelling of the parabolic concentrator, solar receiver and Stirling engine, the objective is to develop a tool to evaluate the optical and thermal losses of the system components, to identify the key parameters of the design and to study their influences on the performances of the components according to various operation conditions. The parabolic concentrator behaviour is simulated using the ray-tracing code SOLTRACE. The comparison between simulation results and experimental measurements made in July 2006 by a PROMES/DLR team shows a good agreement and that SOLTRACE is a good code to simulate a parabolic concentrator. Then, a nodal method is used to calculate the heat losses by reflection, thermal radiation, convection out of the cavity and conduction through the ceramic walls. The absorber is divided in 8 control-volumes in order to take into account the inhomogeneous solar flux distribution. Compared to experimental measurements, simulations give results with a good agreement in particular for the absorber temperatures. To complete the global model, a nodal analysis of the Solo V161 Stirling engine is performed using some assumptions to simplify mass equation and energy equation written for each control-volume. A comparison of the model results with experimental measurements of the power input and output of the EURODISH unit shows that the differences are dues to Stirling engine model. A difference of 6 % is calculated for the Stirling cycle efficiency. The last chapter is dedicated to the technico-economical study of a Dish/Stirling based cogeneration system electricity/domestic hot water. In a first time, a dynamic model of the conversion from solar energy to electricity and heat of the EURODISH Dish/Stirling unit coupled to a solar domestic hot water system is built using results of the last chapter and a classical nodal analysis. Then, the hourly Direct Normal Insolation are calculated from DNI measurements data over a period upper than 5 year in two locations in France (Vignola, Corsica island and Odeillo, Pyrenees). Simulations are performed for a domestic hot water supply of 15 rooms corresponding to the consumption of a “summer” hotel in Vignola, a “winter” hotel in Odeillo and a “classical” hotel in both cases. Simulations show that the recovery of the thermal energy evacuated by the Stirling engine could improve performances of the EURODISH dish/Stirling unit. Levelised Electricity Cost reaches 25 c€. KWh -1 under some assumptions and a EURODISH unit based cogeneration system could be a very good investment without economical risk

Full textCompetition between manufacturing companies is constantly increasing and this causes high demands on product quality and ability to deliver products in time. For companies to be able to reach these goals it is necessary to work with development and continuous improvements and respond to the current pace of the market. This can be achieved in different ways, but a common method is to work with improvement methodologies. Selecting which improvement methodologies to use depends on a company’s manufacturing, knowledge, and resources. Many organisations find it difficult to choose improvement methodologies for their particular organisation and ask the question: “Which method is best suited for our organisation?”. The goal of this study is to examine whether and how Lean Production and Theory of Constraints can be utilized in companies with high-mix low-volume production. By performing a literature review and a case study the following questions have been answered: 1) how Lean production and Theory of constraints are utilized in a HMLV production system and how they can be combined, 2) how the production flow is controlled according to Lean Production and Theory of Constraints to improve the efficiency of a production process in a HMLV company, 3) what personal paradigms and policys arise according to Lean Production and Theory of Constraints in HMLV company and what the relationship between these and quality is. Results from the literature review and case study show that Lean Production and its tools are possible to use in a combination with Theory of Constraints in HMLV companies with some exceptions. However there is no exceptions saying that Lean Production and its tools combined with Theory of Constraints can not be utilized in HMLV companies. These exceptions only need to be adjusted for HMLV production. The results also showed that standardized work in a production process plays a crucial role when combining Lean production with Theory of Constraints. Standardized work contributes to facilitation of further development and implementation. The results show that the production flow can be adjusted using methods from Lean Production and Theory of Constraints, and that this is done best by combining these two methodologies. Furthermore, the results showed that in many cases new investments in the form of new equipment are not necessary. This assumes that bottlenecks, such as personal paradigms and policies are identified. The results showed that quality is directly linked to these two bottlenecks and that an investment in management is preferable.

During our work, a gasification pilot plant was built according to a patented concept. Its operation with 7 kg.h - 1 of wood chips and 10 kg.h - 1 of wood pellets was tested successfully. An average composition of 14% CO, 15% H 2 , 20% CO 2 , 1% CH 4 and 49% N 2 , was obtained. In parallel, operation of SOFC cells with gases similar to those of biomass gasification has been proved. Results showed that some ppmv of H 2 S lead to a 20% decrease of cell's power while 100 ppmv of HCl doesn’t affect the electrochemical reactions. Our work confirmed the use of Bauxaline® to eliminate H 2 S at high temperature. This material is an industrial byproduct derived from alu mina extraction which contains 50% of iron oxides. A content of 200 ppmv H 2 S can be reduced to 8 ppmv for several hours. Treatment capacity was estimated at 70 gS.kg - 1 with a breakthrough of 1 ppmv and an operating temperature of 400°C

The finished goods inventory management in the accessories area of a material testing company is complex. There is interdependence between the demands of products and they can be sold both as part of systems and as individual after sales items. Besides, there is uncertainty in determining replenishment lead times. An optimization problem is formulated considering customer satisfaction, inventory holding costs and correlation between demands. To ascertain its validity, a discrete event simulation is executed over historical demand. Simulation also helps to check the solution robustness by executing the proposed inventory levels over statistically generated demands. The result provides the right mix of finished products which should be stored on the shelves. 90% reduction in lost sales and 35% in inventory value on hand have been projected. The results have been further implemented at the part level inventory.

Full textTritium and carbon 14, produced in the primary coolant by neutron activation, are the main contributors to the radioactivity released in the discharges of nuclear power plants. The dosimetric impact depends on the form in which tritium and carbon 14 are found. The bibliographic study identified the organic molecules likely to be present in liquid effluents. They come from the conditioning of the various circuits and their degradation products. These molecules are transiting through liquid effluents and are therefore likely to be radiolabelled due to the proven presence of tritium and carbon-14. The objective of the thesis is to identify the different organic forms present and their potential radiolabelling with tritium and carbon 14. The approach used to address this issue is divided into two key stages. The first concerns the identification and quantification of organic molecules (by chromatographic techniques). The second is related to the quantification of the different forms (organic and inorganic) of tritium and carbon 14. The latter is a real challenge given the radiological composition of the effluents. Indeed, the potentially expected labelled organic fraction is very small (1-3%) and the separation of organic forms and the soluble organic matter is delicate. A separation step is therefore necessary before quantification of the fractions (organic and inorganic) by liquid scintillation

A mass customization (MC) strategy is characterized by allowing high variety and volume of production with low costs, with a high variety of causes, difficulties in planning a production mix that optimizes the resources available in the company. This thesis aims to develop a model to measure the impacts in ideal mix of production on the MC strategy at furniture company. In the theoretical framework, the MC concepts and levels are defined, the MC enabled, the practices that enable the success of the strategy, also bring the theme of the operational research and the tools for the calculation of the ideal of production. The research method has a quantitative approach and a case study is proposed ten steps in which are taken into account not the products, but rather their lower levels, these are grouped according to their similarity to perform a modeling and optimization. Optimization results are compared with the data obtained from the actual production of the company. The main expected results are a method for analysis as parts of the product by process similarity, an algorithm for optimizing the production mix and a model that measures the impacts of adopting the ideal production mix in the MC strategy. Model created showed in the case that ideal mix production allows to increase revenue value by up to 44.27%.

This thesis is a compilation of the analysis and recommendations gathered from two industry projects conducted at Applied Materials Varian Division in Gloucester, MA and at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, MA. This thesis addresses the improvement of a quality metric used at Applied Materials through the means of material shortage reduction and lead time reduction of system sub-assemblies. Manufacturing quality was found to be impacted by material shortages across the facility and capacity constraints in an area of the facility that manufactures equipment subassemblies. Implementing a new inventory policy would result in an expected 74% to 80% reduction in material shortage occurrences. The capacity increase recommended in this thesis would reduce average lead time for sub-assemblies from about 5-6 days to under 2 days. At the MIT Lincoln Lab, this thesis addresses a possible approach to improving the accuracy of production scheduling and delivery date quotes through the use of job shop scheduling software and historical data analysis. The recommended fabrication request delivery date prediction process involves using a scheduling software to find the optimal delivery date for a job, and then adding a Shop Capacity Buffer time that is calculated using historical data on schedule delays. Schedule delays can be caused by a variety of random events that occur in machine shops, such as machine failures or operators falling ill. By selecting a Shop Capacity Buffer of 90%, a 90% on-time completion rate should be observed. This new method would achieve improved results from the 75% on-time completion rate at present. The final recommendation is a policy change that aims to characterize sources of delay and accurately compensate for the delay using the Shop Capacity Buffer in the delivery date quote process..
