Abstract:
This chapter elucidates the ways Somalis tell and read clan in daily life. The social practice of telling helps legitimize clan affiliation and social boundaries of Somaliness (e.g., excluding Somali minorities from Somaliness). Telling opens up the potential for individuals to build clan-based social capital and exchange capital in its various forms. Social conventions of telling clan, particularly how these have changed since the early to mid-1990s, are explored as well as differences in clan competence. It is shown that while telling clan through markers such as language and dialect, cultivate affinity within clans, these same features can be used to form links across clans.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 shifts attention from the makers of anatomical models to their users by examining the creation and employment of anatomical models in mid-eighteenth-century midwifery schools. In particular, it considers the collection of midwifery models assembled by the Bolognese surgeon and man-midwife Giovanni Antonio Galli (1708–1782) in order to establish a midwifery school in his own residence. The collection included some two hundred models realized in different materials, such as wax, clay, and glass, and was subsequently acquired by Pope Benedict XIV who donated it to the Institute of the Sciences. This chapter investigates how the midwifery models of Galli’s collection translated embodied skill and tacit knowledge into the visual and material language of anatomy. Moreover, it examines how models’ visualization of pregnancy and childbirth participated in the redefinition of midwives’ realms of competence and expertise.

Scarre, Chris. Neolithic Figurines of Western Europe. Edited by Timothy Insoll. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199675616.013.042.

Full text
Abstract:
Western Europe has relatively few figurines of Neolithic or Chalcolithic date by comparison with the large numbers known from Southeast Europe and Southwest Asia. Human figurines (mainly of fired clay) are, however, found in Bandkeramik contexts from Central Europe to the North Sea, with others in eastern France. The scarcity of human figurines from areas such as Britain illustrates the diversity of cultural and symbolic practice that privileged human representations in some areas but not others. In the Baltic region, a separate figurine tradition drawing probably on Late Palaeolithic or Mesolithic origins persisted into the Neolithic. It is, however, the Iberian peninsula that stands apart from other regions of western Europe for the abundance and diversity of its human figurines, most of them of Late Neolithic or Chalcolithic date (mid-fourth to late third millennium bc). They include carved schist plaques and ‘eye-idols’ of bone and other materials. The florescence of Iberian figurine production is associated with the emergence of societies on the verge of complexity, characterized by craft specialization and long-distance exchange.

Abstract:
Melodious panpipes and kena flutes. The shimmering strums of a charango. Poncho-clad musicians playing “El Cóndor Pasa” at subway stops or street corners while selling their recordings. These sounds and images no doubt come to mind for many “world music” fans when they recall their early encounters with Andean music groups. Termed “Andean conjuntos” in this book and “pan-Andean bands” in other scholarship, four-to-six member ensembles of this type have long formed part of the “world music” circuit of the Global North, and also been present in the music scenes of Latin America’s major cities. It is only in Bolivia, however, that the Andean conjunto format has represented the preeminent ensemble line-up for interpreting “national music” since the late 1960s. The La Paz band Los Jairas is widely credited, by scholars and local musicians alike, with canonizing the Andean conjunto tradition in the Bolivian context. When the group debuted in 1966, though, their interpretive approach and instrumentation did not represent a radically new direction for the Bolivian folklore movement. As this book reveals, Los Jairas made popular in Bolivia a style of “national music” interpretation with roots in the folklorization practices developed by previous generations of urban criollo-mestizo musicians. A major goal of this book is to illuminate how urban La Paz folkloric musical trends, practices, and initiatives of the early-to-mid 20th century paved the way for Los Jairas’ dramatic ascent to national stardom in the mid-to-late 1960s and facilitated Bolivia’s ensuing canonization of the Andean conjunto. The second principal aim is to shed light on the Bolivian state’s role in the folkloric music movement, from the period when indigenismo first became a major influence on La Paz artists (the 1920s), to the boom decade of the local folklore movement (the 1960s). The third major goal is to elucidate how La Paz folkloric musical practices articulated with non-Bolivian artistic currents. Perhaps surprisingly to many people, given Bolivia’s image internationally as one of the most “Indian” and therefore culturally traditional countries of Latin America, the Bolivian folkloric music movement developed in close dialogue with a wide array of transnational or cosmopolitan musical trends in the pivotal era spanning the 1920s to 1960s.
