Abstract:
Il presente lavoro costituisce il risultato preliminare delle ricerche archeologiche condotte nel corso delle campagne di scavo 2008-2014 nell'area del Ploutonion di Hierapolis (Pamukkale - Turchia). Le operazioni di scavo si sono svolte nell'ambito delle attività dalla MAIER - Missione Archeologica Italiana a Hierapolis, diretta dal Prof. Francesco D'Andria. Il complesso monumentale posto in corrispondenza della faglia sismica che attraversa l'area centrale della città, da cui sgorgano sorgenti termali e emissioni di biossido di carbonio, era noto nell'antichità come uno degli ingressi al mondo degli inferi e descritto da una serie di fonti letterarie. L'obiettivo della ricerca consiste nella ricostruzione delle fasi di frequentazione e monumentalizzazione del complesso architettonico, attraverso la ricomposizione dei numerosi dati relativi alle strutture ed alla complessa stratificazione dell'area. Per la ricostruzione della sequenza cronologica, fondamentale è stato lo studio del materiale ceramico rinvenuto sia nei contesti chiusi che in giacitura secondaria. Lo studio di ricerca ha interessato sia le fasi di vita del Ploutonion, che abbracciano un ampio lasso di tempo compreso tra il II sec a.C. e l'età medio imperiale, sia le fasi medievali che si impiantano sulle strutture del santuario tra il VI e il X sec. d.C.
This work is the preliminary result of the archaeological investigations conducted during the 2008-2014 excavation campaigns in the area of Ploutonion in Hierapolis (Pamukkale – Turkey). The fieldwork was carried out as a part of the activities of MAIER – Italian Archaeological Mission at Hierapolis, directed by Prof. Francesco D’Andria. The monumental complex is located along the seismic fault that runs through the city centre and from which hot water and poisonous gas flow out. The Ploutonion was known in Antiquity as one of the entrances to the underworld and described by several literary sources. The aim of the research is the chronological reconstruction of the phases of frequentation and monumentalization of the architectural complex, through the analysis of the stratification, the archaeological data and the structures. In order to reconstruct the chronological sequence, great attention has been given to the study of the ceramic finds, in both primary and secondary contexts. The research focuses on the life of the Sanctuary of Pluto and Kore (Ploutonion), between the second century BC and the middle imperial age, but also on the Medieval phase, lasted from sixth to tenth century AD.
