Magwira, Mashonelo Anderson. "Land for mission and mission for land: A missiological reflection of the Kranspoort Mission Station in Soutpansberg within the Vhembe district of the Limpopo Province." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/56960.

Abstract:
The relationship between the Messina Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) in Africa and the group that left Kranspoort Mission Station, who settled in Nancefield in Musina, had an effect on the researcher. The despondent feelings, sentiments of bitterness and grief of the group were felt during church services, Holy Communion services and even during choir practices. The attitude of the Kranspoort arrivals affected many leaders including the researcher s father who was one of the leaders in the congregation in Musina. The continued resistance and ill feelings of the Kranspoort forced removals were always echoed in their conversations. Events were repeatedly told, which demonstrated the deepest dissatisfaction of how the land was lost unexpectedly. The myth of how the land was rightfully acquired by the missionaries and how it was bought remained unanswered. The big question that was always asked was how the aim of mission work related to the occupation and sudden takeover of the land. The land for Africans was never for sale, but for sharing, for the sense of belonging and even for building good relations. The approach of the whites was to obtain land first and do mission work second. This approach was a recipe for conflict. The researcher s deep question then is this: why did these conflicts arise if the core reason for the mission station was the Gospel? Why was there so much pain if the aim of the mission station was the Gospel? Chapter One of this dissertation is an introduction to the study. Chapter Two of the study starts with the events in the Cape that led to the DRC getting involved in mission work outside of the Cape. Influences from other churches that made the DRC get involved in missionary work are also mentioned. This is followed by a discussion of the arrival of DRC and Lutheran missionaries in the north. The role of black evangelists and their coincidental convergence with missionaries around the area of Soutpansberg is also mentioned. Although black missionaries played a vital role in pioneering mission work among their people, they are missing from the records of missionaries despite the fact that white missionaries would not do anything without them. These black evangelists served as preachers in the remote areas where missionaries could not go and served white missionaries personal needs such as getting wood and maintaining their gardens and surroundings. The black evangelists were also bodyguards and served as advisers to the white missionaries in cases where these missionaries were ignorant. These unsung heroes knew the language of their people, they knew the cultural impediments that held people back from accepting Christian teaching and they were also more mature and human to interact with their people. Chapter Three traces the factors that were responsible for the development of mission policy. Land issues, the plight of the poor white and the emergence of the black elite that fought against inequalities made the white government introduce stringent rules that would ensure forced compliance. The 1935 DRC Mission Policy was a direct product of the forces of the 1913 and 1936 Land Tenure Acts that pushed black people into barren land, rendering them hewers of wood and drawers of water (Malala 2015:23). Chapters four, five and six analyse the actual events that took place at the Kranspoort Mission Station. The roles played by resident missionary Rev. Lukas Van der Merwe and mission secretary B.F. Stofberg are discussed. Moreover, individual black leaders such as Walther Segooa, Ramphele and others are scrutinised. Conflicts between Stephanus Hofmeyr s descendants and the DRC about the ownership of the land are also assessed. In addition, ensuing court cases including the Land Claim Court of 1998 with former Kranspoort residents who were forcefully removed in 1957 receive attention. The last chapter contains a summary and conclusions. Lastly, the question posed for the researchers who will explore the question further is: How can the former and the present community that originated from Kranspoort benefit from this history and avoid making the same mistakes? Does the aim to do mission in South Africa still exist? How does one read the signs of time?

Abstract:
This PhD analyses the missionary presence in the Palestinian inner city of Hebron during the interwar period, the links between the Protestant spiritual authorities and the British colonial administrators. It investigates this presence from a religious and a political point of view, during two major political crises. It proposes an entangled history based on missionary, British colonial and Zionist archives, normative and personal documents. Hebron has been prominent in the Protestant missionary rhetoric towards the Jews and later towards Muslims. On the ground, missionaries cooperated with Government officials in the health sector and as authorities’ agents. This case study also brings to light the missionary analysis and reaction towards the British misunderstanding and mishandling of the situation during two major crisis: the riots of August 1929 (which lead to the massacre of the Hebron Jewish community) and of the Great Arab Revolt against the Mandate authorities in 1936-1939 (during which the Hebronites participated actively and resisted to the British civil and military administrations for several months). This PhD argues that the Missionary presence in Hebron enlightens the terms, the challenges, and to some extent the failure of the British faced in Palestine. Through this analysis of the ‘imperial and missionary cultures’ in Hebron, the homogeneity of the British presence in Palestine and its responses to local situations is discussed

Abstract:
While the geographic literature has explored the role of artists as either harbingers or victims of gentrifying processes, this thesis examines the ways in which a particular group of artists contests gentrification. This challenges prevalent narratives in the literature. The Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP) is a grassroots, multi-venue neighborhood event featuring art and performance in San Francisco's Mission District. Occurring every other month with no external funding, no formalized organizing committee, and no official leader, it is currently in its tenth year. One of its stated goals is to facilitate community interaction across cultural divides. The purpose of this study was to explore how the individuals and groups involved with the MAPP work to contest gentrification and empower themselves and their multivalent communities through discursive and material practices. Broadly, I aim to interrogate the conditions under which such gatherings take place, the effects, and the implications for understanding how collaborative creative practice can contest gentrification and affect urban change.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
This d~ssertation concerns the modernisation of Islam-oriented schooling in Cape Town and environs whereby Muslim Mission Primary Schools emerge as a socio-cultural compromise between community needs and State school provision policy. It proceeds from the recognition of the cultural diversity that has since the pioneering days characterised the social order of the Mother City. Two religious and cultural traditions have coexisted here in a superordinate and subordinate relationship; one developed a school system for domestication and cultural assimilation, and the other a covert instructional programme for an"alternative religious system and behaviour code. The thrust of the argument is that the Islamic community, developed on the periphery of society that excluded non-Christians, were in the main concerned with cultural transmission, first in the homes of Free Blacks during the Dutch regime, and later in the mosques that arose when religious freedom was obtained. Traditional schools for Islamic culture transmission were conducted by imams and tended to attract in large numbers the children of slaves and other non-white children causing concern among evangelists In 1863, a political understanding between the governments of Britain and Turkey resulted in Abu Bakr Effendi being assigned by the Sultan to conduct a school in Cape Town to effect some uniformity of Islamic instruction. A latent consequence of this Turkish funded school was the production of the first Afrikaans textbook on Islam, a step in the modernisation of cultural transmission. After Effendi's demise the school was discontinued. State education policy ensured that non-white children generally were educated only at State-funded Christian Mission schools. Most Muslim children received only Islamic instruction at the various madressahs (traditional schools) as a result. An increasingly rigid segregation of public schools oriented towards reproducing the superordinate-subordinate culture relationship resulted in a widening gap of literacy which was increasingly important for the economic and political dispensation. Concerned Muslims organised themselves to address the educational deficiency. The South African Moslem Association urged mOre educational opportunity but floundered before accomplishing anything noteworthy. Their importance lay in their making the Muslims more aware of the need to have a secular education in a changing social order. It was self-evident that education had to be seen in the political context: the weaker community was most likely to suffer the greatest lack of schools. Dr A. Abdurahman, foremost political figure of the first forty years of this century, took the first steps in establishing State-aided primary schools for Muslim children. Whatever success he had in this regard was entirely due to his personali ty and political acumen. In contrast to Abdurahman was the philanthropic effort of Hajee Sullaiman Shah Mohamed to build a school with an Islamic ethos. Why he failed is considered against the social historical background of the Cape Muslims and the communities' manifest needs. Politically, Abdurahman was in a better position and better equipped to address the problem. He served as manager of three Muslim primary schools, the development of which form a substantial part of this study. Abdurahman could harness the creative energies and resources of immigrant and indigenous Muslims in creating these schools. But the Cape Malay Association, disenchanted with Abdurahman's perceived partisanship, politically sought to advance Malay communal interests in the political patronage of the Afrikaner political faction in power. In terms of schooling policy they were to be disillusioned.

Abstract

Several of researchers have reflected that the school ought to be developed to a learning organization. A method as proceed from such a perspective and should be able to match a local child- and educations administration is problembased school development. To investigate in which ways a child- and educations administration prosecute a problem based learning inside the organization a case study was used as research strategy. The question this report gives answer to is:

In what/which way works a child- and educations administration in a rural district with a method to fulfil a problembased learning.

To collect empiric data a canvassing inquiry was accomplished among the child- and educations administrations group of management. According to the research result it can declares that there are good conditions for the organization to prosecute problem based school development, but there is yet a great deal to do before it´s can be said totally fulfilled. In the organizations group of management there is a varying understanding of the school’s mission, because they are seeing the mission from different perspectives. To be able to develop the organization there is important in the future to establish a common dialogue how the coming vision are going to elaborates, because the vision of today is apprehend as indistinct. Within the organization their communication system is well-developed and the culture of the organizations group of management is cooperating. The group of managements meeting ought to engage more time in having challenging conversations how the pedagogical activities in the organization are going to be continuously developed.

Abstract:
Through analysis of written texts produced by school districts and high schools with predominantly Mexican American populations, beliefs about Mexican American students that mediate attitudes and expectations can be exposed. In this work, I conduct comparative critical discourse analyses (CDA) of school district and high school mission statements from a total of 35 schools and 20 school districts in the Southwestern United States and Chicago, Illinois. The sites were selected because of their large to predominantly Mexican American students populations. Of the 35 school mission statements I researched, 19 were from predominantly Mexican American high schools and 16 were from predominantly White high schools. Of the 20 school district mission statements I collected, 11 were from largely to predominantly Mexican American school districts and 9 were from largely to predominantly White school districts.Analyses conducted in this study of the mission statements utilizing several `tools' of CDA revealed ideologies, or ideological discursive formations (IDFs), of low expectations and negative attitudes for Mexican American students when compared to White students. These IDFs materialize by way of frames and signs that are (re)created in the district and school mission statements. The IDFs serve to mediate the discourses that are utilized to describe Mexican American students and the districts and schools they attend. These discourses serve to mediate beliefs about Mexican American students that in turn reinforce the IDFs already in place.Understanding the types of discourses that (re)produce low expectations for and negative attitudes about Mexican American students is a first step in changing these schooling discourses that ultimately contribute to low academic achievement.

Grey, Mashoko Stephen. "The missing ingredient: rethinking the drought disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation nexus in Chirumhanzu District, Zimbabwe." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/58298.

Abstract:
Two of the main challenges facing communities and governments in developing countries are the reduction of risks of hydro-meteorological hazards and adaptation to climate change. As climate variability and change impacts are becoming more visible in the form of disasters, and are negatively affecting climate sensitive livelihoods and eroding communities' ability to fully recover, leading to increased vulnerability to subsequent climate risks. The unpredictability of current weather systems, therefore, makes it very difficult for poor governments and households to deal with adverse impacts of climate change. Furthermore, the fragmented approach to DRR and CCA with regards to practice, policy and organisational frameworks for dealing with climate risks is resulting in coordination challenges for the government departments. This study aimed to explore how local households and communities perceive and are experiencing and coping with climate change and drought, and what that means for integrating hydro-meteorological disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. The study was carried out in Chirumhanzu district and the methods used for data collection included: 217 household surveys; six focus group discussions; participatory learning actions methods; key informant's interviews and document review. The majority of households owned low value material assets and had low levels of livelihood capitals and this exposed them to the impacts of climate variability and successive droughts. This low adaptive capacity largely affected their ability to engage effective drought risk reduction and adaptation strategies for their livelihood activities in small-scale farming and livestock rearing. Vulnerability to climate risks was exacerbated by seasonal weather forecasts, which were deemed by some households to be unreliable, inaccurate and not easily understood, while others used of indigenous knowledge. Successive droughts affected households' access to food and cash income for other household demands. Other non-climatic factors that contributed to adverse drought impacts at the household level were an emphasis on reactive humanitarian aid approach and the poor economy in Zimbabwe. Additionally, the policy framework for dealing with climate change and drought hazards is fragmented and weak; and is housed in different government departments making it difficult to coordinate and implement. To improve climate risk management, there is need for the government to appreciate that drought risk reduction and climate change adaptation are all about reducing vulnerability. Understanding this, might assist in improving government focus on addressing the underlying causes of vulnerability and mainstreaming DRR and CCA into development processes through addressing specific and generic adaptive capacities. The thesis argues that as long as rural households are involved in climate sensitive livelihood activities and not getting meaningful intervention to diversity and/or better intensify their livelihood activities, they will continue to be vulnerable to successive climate risks. This fragmented approach to dealing with climate risks, is not yielding any successful results with regards to building resilience, risk reduction or adaptation of rural households.

Abstract:
This work falls within the field of public health from an interdisciplinary perspective as it mobilizes knowledge from epidemiology, planning and human and social sciences. Our main objective was to analyze the political viability of participatory planning within Tirecatinga Indigenous Territory, DSEI Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The theoretical framework used was the Theory of Social Game by Carlos Matus, created by visiting and extending two other theories formulated by the same author: the Theory of Situations and the Theory of Social Production. The selected methodological strategy was a case study with a view to formulate a local level situational strategic planning used to treat a case. Therefore the process and the results cannot be generalised to other indigenous communities within the national territory. All reports were submitted to Discourse Analysis according to Dominique Mainguenaus hypothesis. We hope that the exercise of planning within indigenous territories can expand the understanding of the health status of Indians living within Tirecatinga Indigenous Territorry, a territory attached to the DSEI Cuiabá; extend the understanding of the logic of action that permeates the practices of the subjects in the spaces of social participation; that planning can be used as a reflection tool and promote changes to the organization providing support for the institutionalization from a perspective which recognizes the needs of individuals and, above all, promote reflexivity and critical activity within the participating indigenous community

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to look at mission driven school district leadership in Massachusetts public schools and attempt to identify any relationship, or lack thereof, between district mission statements and student achievement. In this study, 288 Massachusetts public school districts are ranked according to their 2011 high school graduation rate and their 2011 tenth grade Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) results. From the 288 districts, a sample of the top thirty and the bottom thirty were selected. All district wide mission statements were obtained from the websites of the top 30 and bottom 30 school districts with a 100% return rate. The mission statements were then coded using Bebell and Stemler's 2011 coding rubric. Bebell and Stemler's coding rubric contains 11 themes with 42 subcategories. The 11 themes are: academic/cognitive, social development, emotional development, civic development, physical development, vocational preparation, integrate into local community, integrate into global community, integrate into spiritual community, safe nurturing environment, and challenging environment. The 42 subcategories are indicators composed of key words and phrases for each of the eleven themes in Bebell and Stemler's 2011 coding rubric. Results from the present study found the academic/cognitive theme occurred more than any other theme in both the top and bottom public school districts in Massachusetts. Statistical differences did appear for two of Bebell and Stemler's themes: civic development and vocational preparation. The civic development theme was correlated with the top 30 school districts, while the vocational theme was correlated with the bottom 30 school districts. Subcategories of the civic theme include productive, responsible, contributing members of society involved in public service and character education, while vocational subcategories include competition in the workforce and marketable skills. This study is limited in size and scope and more research is suggested. This study is unique because it is the first time that mission driven leadership in Massachusetts school districts is being analyzed to see if there is a connection with student achievement. The present study would be of interest to policy makers and practitioners who are interested in mission driven leadership and student achievement.

Dube, Elijah Elijah Ngoweni. "Getting married twice: the relationship between indigenous and Christian marriages among the Ndau of the Chimanimani area of Zimbabwe." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/23809.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the Ndau people of Chimanimani, Zimbabwe. Contact with Westerners brought significant changes to their marriage practices. South Africa General Mission (SAGM) missionaries required Ndau people to conduct church (“white”) weddings for their marriages to be recognised by the church. This has caused a problem whereby Ndau Christians marry traditionally/customarily and yet still have to conduct church weddings. The church has not rethought its position on the necessity for having this duplication of marriages. The thesis sought to develop an in-depth understanding of Ndau people’s perceptions and experiences on the connection between and the necessity for both marriages in Chimanimani, Zimbabwe. Data regarding Ndau people’s understanding of marriage practices was collected using in-depth semi-structured and focus group interviews. Following a qualitative research design, the study used the phenomenological approach to collect data and postcolonialism as the research paradigm. Using these, twenty individual and five focus group interviews were conducted. Seven themes emerged from the data. These covered marriage practices of the Ndau, the most preferred way of marriage, various reasons for having church weddings, perceived relationship between the two marriages, different views on the sufficiency of traditional marriages, thoughts on the expenses of church weddings, and how participants married and reasons thereof. The findings showed that Ndau Christians conduct church weddings for several reasons. These are because they:  want to celebrate their marriages  desire God’s blessings when they convert to Christianity. It is regarded as God’s biblical requirement  understand it as a church requirement/rule  get church teaching that encourage church weddings  need recognition and acceptance in the church as well as general social recognition  associate Christianity with Westernisation vi  regard it as a deterrent to unfaithfulness and polygyny  regard church weddings as having wider official recognition than traditional marriages and  want associated material advantages. The conclusion states that there is neither a theological nor a biblical basis for requiring Ndau Christians to have church weddings. Using a postcolonial hybrid approach, the thesis suggests a merging of the two marriages into one ceremony. More recommendations were given and the church was challenged to be more responsive to its people’s struggles.

Background: Childhood obesity is a major global public health issue. (1) To assess the efficacy of MX program on improving children’s knowledge, attitude, and practice of physical activities and healthy diet, and healthy growth in rural elementary schools. (2) To assess the sustainability of the health behaviors and health indicators after MX program ended. (3) To compare the pre-post changes in the health behaviors and health indicator between the intervention group and the control group. (4) To assess the efficacy of MX on the health behaviors and health indicators by school environment. Methods: This study was a delayed-start, cluster randomized control trial. The intervention took place in the 1st semester of 2016 school year. Eight rural elementary schools at the north coast of Taiwan were participated. Schools were matched by school location and student number of 3rd and 4th grades, and the matched schools were randomly assigned to the intervention group and the control group. The intervention group received eight weeks MX program intervention and was followed up eight weeks later. The control group started the same program after the intervention group completed the program. The efficacy of the intervention was tested by the mixed effect model, using intention-to-treat analysis. Results: About half of students in the intervention group and a third of students in the control group were overweight or obese at baseline. (1) Efficacy of intervention: compared to the control group, the intervention group had significantly increased in physical knowledge score (+0.91 vs. +0.25, p = 0.002), diet knowledge score (+0.62 vs. +0.17, p = 0.044), and the score of interests in NASA and space exploration (+0.34 vs. -0.07, p < 0.0001). Most of students stayed at the same stage of change for three health behaviors, while the intervention group (32.9%) had a higher percentage of improvement on exercise habit than the control group (27.6%). (2) Sustainability: KAP scores and perceived norm toward the health behaviors remained constant after the intervention. The interests in NASA and space exploration decreased after the end of intervention (-0.19, 95% CI = -0.06 – -0.33, p = 0.006). (3) Pre-post changes between two groups: significant differences of pre-post change between the intervention group and the control group were found in height (+1.36 vs. +0.48, p < 0.0001), height z-score (+0.07 vs. -0.07, p < 0.0001), weight (+0.82 vs. -0.06, p = 0.009), diet knowledge score (+0.62 vs. +0.15, p = 0.029), behavioral belief score (+0.28 vs. -0.10, p = 0.045), dietary behavior score (+2.68 vs. -0.42, p = 0.0002), and score of interest in NASA and space exploration (+0.34 vs. -0.08, p = 0.0006). (4) Environmental factor that modified the intervention efficacy: the models showed a significant interaction of monthly milk provision and intervention on children’s height (p = 0.012) and on behavior belief of “Drinking milk helps me grow taller” (p = 0.041). Conclusion: The present study is the first to examine the effects of the NASA MX program, and our study demonstrated the efficacy in improving children’s knowledge of healthy eating and active living. The present study also demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability in Taiwan children population.

Abstract:
______________________________________________________________________________

Tyler, John. "A Pragmatic Standard of Legal Validity." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2012-05-10885.

Full text
Abstract:
American jurisprudence currently applies two incompatible validity standards to determine which laws are enforceable. The natural law tradition evaluates validity by an uncertain standard of divine law, and its methodology relies on contradictory views of human reason. Legal positivism, on the other hand, relies on a methodology that commits the analytic fallacy, separates law from its application, and produces an incomplete model of law. These incompatible standards have created a schism in American jurisprudence that impairs the delivery of justice. This dissertation therefore formulates a new standard for legal validity. This new standard rejects the uncertainties and inconsistencies inherent in natural law theory. It also rejects the narrow linguistic methodology of legal positivism. In their stead, this dissertation adopts a pragmatic methodology that develops a standard for legal validity based on actual legal experience. This approach focuses on the operations of law and its effects upon ongoing human activities, and it evaluates legal principles by applying the experimental method to the social consequences they produce. Because legal history provides a long record of past experimentation with legal principles, legal history is an essential feature of this method. This new validity standard contains three principles. The principle of reason requires legal systems to respect every subject as a rational creature with a free will. The principle of reason also requires procedural due process to protect against the punishment of the innocent and the tyranny of the majority. Legal systems that respect their subjects' status as rational creatures with free wills permit their subjects to orient their own behavior. The principle of reason therefore requires substantive due process to ensure that laws provide dependable guideposts to individuals in orienting their behavior. The principle of consent recognizes that the legitimacy of law derives from the consent of those subject to its power. Common law custom, the doctrine of stare decisis, and legislation sanctioned by the subjects' legitimate representatives all evidence consent. The principle of autonomy establishes the authority of law. Laws must wield supremacy over political rulers, and political rulers must be subject to the same laws as other citizens. Political rulers may not arbitrarily alter the law to accord to their will. Legal history demonstrates that, in the absence of a validity standard based on these principles, legal systems will not treat their subjects as ends in themselves. They will inevitably treat their subjects as mere means to other ends. Once laws do this, men have no rest from evil.
