ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Uniting Reformed Congregation of Koelehof on the road from maintenance to be missional: the development of sustainable farming communities. The changing global and local context of the church and the decline of the church‟s influence on society, call for a need of honest introspection. It is important how the church respond to these changes as it has an impact on the church‟s role in the world. This research aims to help the Uniting Reformed Congregation of Koelenhof to respond properly to its own context. Chapter one gives an outline of the research with regard to the goal, motivation and method. Chapter two lays the basis for the research which is grounded in the Triune God who is a sending God (missio Dei). The question here is how life in the Trinity affects the task of the church and destination of the world. In Chapter three the relationship between the church and God is highlighted. The church must exercise spiritual discernment to discover its missional vocation in the world. Spiritual discernment is also vital with regard to the decision processes of the church. This implies that the church, as a missionary of God, must have a personal relationship with Him so that the church can be sensitive enough to hear His voice. In chapter four the emphasis is on the church‟s relationship to the world in which she finds herself. For the church to really be faithful to her calling, she needs not only listen to God, but also to the context. Since the time of Jesus, the church has to face different challenges and has always react differently to each situation. A change of context often requires a change of heart. This is the focus of chapter five. What is the nature of these changes and especially the role of the church leadership in this regard? The answer is a transformation from being maintenance driven to being missionally inspired. This transformation is never a goal in itself. This transformation aims at the transformation of society. The transformation must enable the church to be an effective sign and foretaste of the kingdom of God. Therefore the title of chapter six is: From missional transformation to community transformation. In conclusion a summary is given of the results of this research.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research was done from the viewpoint that because of different reasons believers and congregations of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa are struggling to make a significant contribution to processes of reconciliation in this country and thereby to a certain extent fail to live out the church’s witness in this regard. Therefore the question was asked how this church can be guided to play a bigger part in processes of reconciliation in the midst of phenomena like race-prejudice, race-discrimination and subtle and blatant forms of racism in South Africa today. By focusing on few of the causes of these phenomena as well as certain perspectives on missio Dei theologies, an attempt are made to guide the Dutch Reformed Church towards involvement in processes of reconciliation, the transformation of broken relationships between people of different races and the eradication of racism. A number of hermeneutical processes are being emphasized in order to guide the church towards a miss ional praxis of reconciliation. The essence of this praxis entails the eradication of stereotypes regarding ‘the other’, by focusing on an inculturation approach in the light of missio Dei theology. By focusing on an interpretation of missio Dei as God’s reconciliation through the poor, an attempt was made to guide the church towards involvement in processes aiming at economic justice. This research is therefore an attempt to guide the church towards the discernment of her role as the witnesses of Christ within this context in South Africa today.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Small rural congregations like Marken with a member count of 60 often battle with the question if the congregation will be able to survive. This question is influenced through individuals and larger congregations' perception that bigger is better. The vitality of small congregations is being judged by a modernistic approach. According to this viewpoint a large member count is an important factor for survival. The uniqueness of small rural congregations is not taken into account when the vitality of such congregations comes under the spotlight. The style of ministry and the program approach of larger congregations is the model normally associated with success and vitality and leads to small congregations' attempt to follow that model and in the process lose its God given uniqueness. The congregations' question of survival is addressed through a guided journey in an attempt to help the congregation realize its missional calling. A congregation like Marken must realize that a small congregation also can and should be a mirror of God's kingdom. Missional theology and Trinitarian theology cannot be discussed without taking into account the missio Dei of God. The Dutch Reformed Congregation of Marken' expression as church in and for the world must be modelled in God's missio Dei. The Trinity is the foundation for missional theology. The purpose of the study is the transformation of the Dutch Reformed Congregation of Marken who battles with a question of survival to become a missional congregation who takes part in God's mission. The history of the congregation, her identity and culture plays an important role. In the history of the congregation it became evident that a number of factors, the long absence of a minister, shortage in funds and a schism in the congregation lead to the question of survival. A pattern became evident in which the congregation described herself as small. This became part of the identity and culture of the congregation and is confirmed in the ethnographic research. All of these factors contributed to the single deepest question in the hearts of the congregation: How can the Dutch Reformed Church in Marken survive? To be able to understand these questions, one must underline the importance of the context in which the congregation finds herself. The congregation is situated in Limpopo province and form part of the Mogalakwena municipality which consists of roughly 300,000 Pedi speaking people. Realities like demography and migration patterns in the contextual analysis are indications that the congregation can't rely on growth through birth rate. The contextual analysis was also a step to open the blinded eyes of the congregation to the realities around the congregation. This was done to motivate the congregation to take part in the missio Dei. The congregation's involvement in the missio Dei can be described as a journey. In the study the first steps of Marken on this missional road is also researched. It shows that the Spirit of God is already transforming Marken and it can be seen in normal, natural experiences which helped people to recognize the work and the intention of the Spirit (Marais, 2007:120) This should give hope to a congregation who battled with a question of survival in the past.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The AFM came into being as a result of the Pentecostal Movement, which in turn owes its existence to the worldwide revivals at the beginning of the twentieth century. The president of the AFM, Dr. Isak Burger, writes in his book concerning the history of the church: Die Geloofsgeskiedenis van die Apostoliese Geloofsending van Suid-Afrika, that the First Evangelical Awakening (18th century), the Second Evangelical Awakening (19th century), as well as the worldwide revivals at the beginning of the twentieth century, had a causal effect on one another. It goes without saying that the musical practices of these Awakenings would also, indirectly, influence that of the AFM. This study serves a twofold purpose. It is just as important to examine the origin and development of the AFM, as it is to examine internal and external factors that have influenced its musical practices. The music that has been used during different periods also receives due attention. In order to view the AFM in the correct perspective, Chapter 1 deals with the factors leading up to the origin of the Pentecostal Movement. However, the historical development within the AFM also receives attention, with special reference to those events which influenced the practice of church music directly or indirectly. Chapter 2 includes a history of Church Music since the Reformation, since the Reformers strove to get the congregation involved into the service of worship. Music practised during the First and Second Evangelical Revivals, as well as the subsequent revivals at the beginning of the twentieth century, also receives mention. The musical practice within the AFM forms the main theme of Chapter 3. Subdivisions of this chapter reflect historical events within the AFM, the influence of the Charismatic Revival Movement, the role and function of music during church services, the rendition of music items, as well as the leading figures who contributed to this practice. Chapter 4 provides a chronological summary of songbooks used by the AFM since 1908 until 1998, while Chapter 5 presents analyses of the music mentioned in Chapters 2,3 and 4.

Full textThe second half of the 20th century marks a paradigm shift from Christendom to missional theology with implications for missional ecclesiology. The being of a triune, missional God urges the church towards a critical-hermeneutical self reflection on it’s identity and calling in terms of evangelization and active involvement in an all-inclusive witnessing in the world. Missional ecclesiology emphasizes diaconial involvement in the world. The reflection of the Dutch Reformed Church on diaconia can be learnt in its conceptualization of missional diaconial work and how it is being implemented in the practice of the church. This ecclesiological development is being studied using the ministry of compassion of the Dutch Reformed Congregation, Onrusriver as case study.

Full textThe Swedish Armed Forces have declared that by the year 2023, the Swedish Armed Forces C2-systems are to be fully FMN compliant. This thesis is to answer what initially needs to change in the C4ISR to enable them to achieve FMN compatibility. The current FMN Spiral specification provides, in principle, only support for the essential human-to-human communication services. With this, the SA, JISR and MEDEVAC Mission Thread are to be conducted. The Swedish Armed Forces is clear about the importance of interoperability in order to act together with others, both within and outside its region. But it is less clear which of the Swedish Armed Forces C2-system that is affected by FMN. This thesis has come to the conclusion that SWECCIS probably is the C4ISR that best represents what FMN is trying to achieve today, and that SWECCIS basically is FMN compliant. SWECCIS provides, however, only four of the six human-to-human communications services, and the Swedish Armed Forces' current solution to provide audio-based collaboration services is not FMN compliant. The future FMN Spiral specifications will place more demands on the Swedish Armed Forces C4ISR for those to maintain their FMN compliant.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the relationship between koinonia and diakonia. Where koinonia and diakonia are in proximity, an opportunity arises to draw individuals from different context together. This leads to an inter-cultural space where individuals from different contexts are encouraged to welcome and support each other in a mutual way. Chapter 3 presents a hermeneutical Scriptural and a theological framework illustrating the important relationship between koinonia and diakonia. It is argued that such a “full koinonia” is embodied in the life of Jesus Christ. Not only did Christ came to live among human beings (koinonia ) but He also gave his life to us (diakonia). In chapter 4 the early Christian Church is evaluated as a community that exemplified a form of “full koinonia”. Within the cultural diverse community in the Roman Empire, the church was able to reach out to the so called “other” by their positive approach to the many crises and challenges of the day. Christian help and support presented itself as a unique support network. In chapter 5 “ full koinonia” is evaluated through an interdisciplinary approach by listening to sociology and community development. Both disciplines argue for a more personal or holistic approach in rendering service to communities. This calls for the addressing of greater societal issues over and above individual interests. In chapter 6 “full koinonia” is discussed from a missional perspective. A cross-cultural or intercultural framework for servanthood is explored. Six principles for a “full koinonia” is outlined: openness, acceptance, trust, learning, understanding and serving. With this hermeneutical framework as point of departure, the empirical component of the research is discussed in the following chapters. The research focuses on three Christian community projects, Shiloh Synergy, Sarfat Community Projects and the Elsiesrivier Care Centre exploring how they dealt with “full koinonia.” The design of the empirical study in chapter 7 is presented in the form of a comparative study for the discernment of: 1) The processes and structures within inter-cultural Christian community projects; and 2) an evaluation of the level of a transformation in relationships. The qualitative data is analysed and discussed in chapter 8. The study concludes in chapter 9 by establishing a meaningful interpretation of “full koinonia” in faith based involvement within a context full of societal challenges. The literature study as well as the empirical component of the research proved the hypothesis that stated that faith based personal involvement leads to holistic growth for all concerned and contributes to social transformation.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The missio Dei is understood as the initiative, movement and sending love of the triune God to the world for the purpose of establishing his kingdom. When the phrase “missional” is used within the context of the church, it describes a congregation that finds her identity within this theological framework, and understands that her calling lies in collaborating with the missio Dei. The human response to the missio Dei can be described by the concept “spirituality”. Trends within the macro-context of our time show spirituality is subject to subjective interpretation. It is therefore necessary to define and frame Christian spirituality within the context of faith, and more specifically, within the context of missional theology. For this reason this study poses the following research question: What is the essence and nature of missional spirituality? What would a spirituality that uses the missio Dei as its theological epistemological core look like? The study found that the essence of missional spirituality lies therein that the initiative of man’s search for and connection to God, belongs to God himself. The Trinity provides the landscape in which missional spirituality can be described and understood. Missional spirituality insists, though, that a believer’s knowledge of God (theology) is meant to be fully embraced in life as response to God (spirituality). It thus invites a believer towards participation in the missio Dei, within the following three spheres: - A process of spiritual formation: God takes the initiative in the salvation of man and restores Him, through the atonement of Christ, to a relationship with Him. God further invites and enables the believer in becoming a participant in a process of spiritual formation, which is meant to impact his life holistically. A way of life, characterised by faith and love, becomes the measure of an adequate response to the missio Dei. - A community of faith: God also takes the initiative in the formation of a faith community. Communion with Christ assumes communion with the body of Christ. Missional spirituality invites believers towards mutual relationships within the community of faith that strives towards reflecting the unity and love of the Trinity. - Social transformation: It is distinctive of missional spirituality that God takes the initiative in the transformation of society. There is an underlying connection between the agenda of God’s kingdom and the transformation of reality. A call to Christ involves believers in a call towards social transformation, incarnate to the conditions of time and place. The study shows that a reciprocal interiority exists between these spheres of participation, which is characteristic to missional spirituality. The embrace thereof opens the door to the believer towards finding meaning in life. A believer can further his participation in the missio Dei by engaging in spiritual practices, which grows his capacity for a greater awareness of God’s movement and the discernment of his will.
Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/96852.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The congregation of Kathu is the largest Dutch Reformed Church congregation in the Northern Cape. It is a congregation with a huge potential to show signs of the kingdom of God, especially in the countryside. The congregation has the ability to be a leader to effect meaningful change in society. Many people living in the countryside are losing hope because of economic regression. It is their experience that politicians do not keep their promises, with the result that everyone experiences declining living standards. The potential of the congregation has to do with the following: (1) there is a lot of economic development and progress in the area, (2) there is a lot of energy in the congregation because of the large number of young people as well as the many ambitious people working on the mines. The opportunities for the congregation to make a difference go hand in hand with the development of a whole new town. The population of Kathu has already doubled in size since 2001 and it is expected to grow even further. There are many opportunities for the congregation to get involved with community projects in a fast changing environment. The needs and the opportunities are endless. The congregation has credibility in our local society and there are good relationships and cooperation between the congregation and other role players. Despite these opportunities the congregation is reluctant to get involved. In the beginning the hypothesis was that it is due to a skewed view of what the church is. Because the congregation is in the countryside it was thought that the members might have a politically conservative opinion about the church getting involved in community matters. This study has proved that it is not the case. It is much more likely that the problem lies with the leadership or even with the systems and structures that are (not) in place. If the leadership would be more willing to take risks, they might find that they have many members waiting to follow them. Or if the systems were in place, it would be much easier for the members to know where and how to get involved.

Full textIn this essay I want to investigate how the poodle strategy affects a person’s credibility when he or she uses it. The poodle strategy is a strategy, which someone uses when he or she is scrutinized by the media. It’s primary purpose is to suppress further media coverage but it is also a strategy for defending oneself and hence rescuing one’s reputation either as a private person or as an official.
The essay’s research questions are:
- How has the strategy been applied for defensive purposes and what are the results?
- To which extent can the Stasis theory and Benoit’s theory on Apologia be connected to the strategy?
- Does the strategy affect the user’s credibility?
To answer these questions four cases from the political sphere in Sweden where persons have been said to have “done a poodle” have been analyzed. In order to analyze the strategy and to judge how successful it has been these cases have been connected to the Stasis theory, Benoit’s theory on apologia and theories about credibility and trust.
Additionally this essay investigates how applicable the Stasis theory is as a model for analyses and how relevant analyses based on stasis theory are today. Furthermore it investigates wheteher a fusion of the Stasis theory and Benoit´s theory on Apologia can be profitable.
An important conclusion is that the poodle strategy is a strategy, which is more complicated than one might first think. Whether the strategy works depends on a series of factors; for example the person’s initial credibility (or ethos) and the morality of the actions. These factors need to be assessed before the strategy is put into use.

Full textAperture synthesis is an interferometric technique similar to Earth rotation synthesis employed in radio astronomy in which the signals received by a pair of small antennas are processed in a way to synthesize a single large antenna. The aperture synthetic concept used in radioastronomy was readapted to Earth remote sensing for large thermal sources. Thanks to this technique, limitations on antenna size in passive microwave remote sensing have been overcome. The correlation, or visibility, function obtained by cross-correlating the signals received by the antennas of an interferometric system using aperture synthesis is linked to the brightness temperature map of the observed scene by means of a Fourier-transform law. This is know as the standard form of the Van Cittert-Zernike theorem for fixed observers with respect to sources of temperature. This stan- dard formulation is derived by cross-correlating the instantaneous temporal components of the measured electric fields by different antennas. A new concept based on a passive spatio-temporal interferometry was proposed as the new generation to follow the well-known SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission successfully operating since November 2, 2009. The aim of the proposed concept is a jump in the current achieved geometric resolution to orders capable of meeting the stringent users' needs for the study of hydrological applications in the local scale where sub-kilometric resolutions are required. This interferometric concept is based on the idea of integrating the displacement of the observer (satellite's antenna), and hence the time variable, in the calculation of the correlation function, which yields the creation of virtual baselines between the positions of antennas at different instants, in addition to the physical ones formed between the instantaneous antennas' spatial positions. Sadly, the additional information due to the virtual baseline was shown to be exactly canceled by the induced Doppler shift due to the observer's motion. We show furthermore that when using the aforementioned spatio-temporal interferometric system combined with a revolutionary Fourier Correlation Imaging (FouCoIm) procedure, consisting in cross-correlating, at slightly different frequencies, the Fourier components of the fluctuations of the re- ceived electric fields by a pair of antennas separated by a distance Δr on board of a satellite flying at height h, the 2D position-dependent brightness temperature can be reconstructed. Besides, the analytical derivation of the correlation function gives rise to a relationship linking the measured cor- relations to the position-dependent brightness temperatures by means of a Highly Oscillatory Integral (HOI) kernel. Interestingly, the analytical study of the HOI kernel showed the remarkable property that a corre- lation between both antenna-signals remains within a small frequency interval (different frequencies) outside the simple auto-correlation (same frequency). As a matter of fact, while existing systems had, until now, only considered the simple 1D information contained in the auto-correlation, it appears that the resulting correlation function from this concept bears a 2D information for the measurement of the position-dependent brightness temperature. Based on this, one is capable of reconstructing 2D bright- ness temperatures starting from a simple 1D geometry (two antennas arranged perpendicularly to the flight direction)

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is an exploratory study of Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa. It is anticipated that this thesis will shed light on the identity and role of local congregations towards strangers and foreigners. Concepts such as openness, hospitality, acceptance, trust, willingness, and true understanding are used to try and establish understanding and reconciliation between South Africans and immigrants. The research follows the violent attacks on Zimbabwean immigrants because of the conception that the increase in Zimbabwean immigrants are to the detriment of South African citizens. In the opinion of the researcher, this is only one side of the issue – there is also another side. These foreigners are people who have valid reasons for coming to South Africa. The living conditions in their own countries have become unbearable and they turned to South Africa for a better life and future. The scale of illegal immigration came as a surprise to both the immigrants and locals in South Africa. These groups together have formed a new South African society, and with it came new economic, social, and welfare problems. This new society needs to form a new understanding of each individual’s background, personality, and cultural differences. The challenges experienced by the Zimbabwean migrants in South Africa are unacceptable and insensitive. From this study, it can be concluded that the South African Government does not play its part to the full extent, but relies on the Church to deal with the immigrants and their challenges.

The dissertation reflects a study of what pastors in the Mission Covenant Church in Sweden say in their sermons about society and social responsibility and represents an attempt at finding factors such as gender, education, age, values, and faith behind what has been said in the sermons.
The results show that in general pastors have a negative picture of society irrespective of which of its aspects they are addressing. The pastors’ view of Christian responsibility for society is that it is primarily something for the individual to take, not for the congregation. Above all, Christian responsibility for society is about individual Christians' taking responsibility for her fellow human beings.
For theoretical clarification the findings are discussed within the framework of the concept of secularisation, following Casanova (1994) sub-divided into differentiation, decline of religion and privatisation. In the study differentiation is identified when pastors do not relate theological reflection to their description and analysis of society. Thus they do not provide an integrated system of meaning for everyday life. As for privatisation, even when pastors are mainly speaking about public events, they are unable to place those events in a religiously interpreted context. According to the pastors social problems are to be met with private and individual solutions through Christians' actions to the benefit of their fellow men.
The MCC is a part of what in Swedish can be called a popular movement, a kind of "social movement" or "voluntary organisation." The analysis shows that its pastors in their sermons do not embrace some of the central parts of the ideology that generally pertain to popular movements, namely concern with reforming society.

Full textThis essay is about development and developmental work within preschools. Development is a well-acclaimed term within preschools in Sweden. A term usually used without much thought. What does development really mean and how does something or someone develop? In this essay I will investigate factors which are considered to have an influence on developmental work within the preschool’s educational system. The purpose of this essay is to discover small and large aspects that makes a difference for, both the individual and for the preschools, education in a developmental work. My research questions are as follows: - What does the phenomenon of development work mean for the preschool’s education? - What opportunities/difficulties does experienced preschool teachers see within a developmental work? - What factors influences the development process? - Which forms of practical and theoretical knowledge is demanded for a development work to proceed? This empiricism consists of stories from my own daily life, about experiences and thoughts that through the years have come and gone. To gain a perspective on my experiences, I participate in a couple of different discussion forums and I also see a focus group. Throughout my conversations and through reading scientific and literary texts, I draw attention to various aspects on development and development work within preschools. My research shows that development work is a complex phenomenon. Small factors can affect whether development takes place or not. There are factors that can help in a development work, but also factors that can overturn it. There is no quick fix for development to take place, it is a long process that requires commitment from everyone. By paying attention to these aspects, we can change and develop our preschool education much more easily. Working together can be a challenge, but it is also the strength of preschools. We need to support each other and work together for development to take place. Development takes place largely in our present actions rather than in the administrative work. The essay is divided into four chapters that show the complexity of the development work: culture, administration work, trust and practical knowledge.

Using certain qualitative methods, a literature study is done on Kwa Siza Bantu Mission (KSB). The reason is to come to a conclusive answer to the difference in opinions with regards to KSB. Chapter 1 gives an overview of the problem as well as the result of the inquiry of the Evangelical Alliance into KSB. Information on the researcher as well as his research methods follow. Chapter 3 is a summery of the history of KSB and the Stegen family. In Chapter 4 a review is made of the unique literature. From Chapter 5 - 7 a statement of the Evangelical Alliance is discussed. The statement implies that the misuse of supernatural experiences, iead to paternalistic or elitistic methods resulting in tensions and divisions. Chapter 8 discusses the findings and Chapter 9 tries to formulate a base-theory and suggests some solutions to the problems of KSB,

Full textThe calling of the church is put in no uncertain terms. A lost word must be reached with the good news that there is salvation and new life in Christ Jesus. The local congregation is mainly carrying the responsibility for this. In the modern, rapid changing, consumer oriented society, congregations don't always succeed in reaching the people in their neighbourhood with this good news. A new genration of church growth experts suggest that good marketing principles can be helpful. Although the congregations already make use of certain marketing practices, a new world of marketing is opened up in the church. Church marketing originate from this. This is, however an unknown area for the most congregational leaders and require thorough study. The Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa is standing within a rapid changing context, that direct enormous challenges to the local congregation. With great social crisis, a rapid changing society and drastic internal changes, there are almost unlimited opportunities for congregations. The question is thus, how these new tendencies in church marketing can help congregations in the the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa to meet these challenges. In this study an incisive inquiry is conducted into the new tendencies of church marketing, in order to get insight into marketing practices. Next, the specific situation of the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa is investigated in order to identify how church marketing can help local congregations. Practical guidelines for church marketing in the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa are suggested in order to help church leaders with implementation.

Full textVision and mission are often incorrectly seen as synonyms. In this study the vision and mission are defined separately. A vision is defined as a dream of an ultimate goal of the organisation in the future. This must be a clear and specific image or word picture that requires imagination. The vision must become ideology and summarise the core values of the organisation. A mission is defined as the type of business that the organisation is carrying out. It says why the organisation has a right to exist and the immediate goal of the organisation. A vision and a mission have definite advantages for the organisation. Some of the advantages are an ultimate and an immediate goal to strive for. A vision helps employees to decide if its actions are correct or incorrect. A mission gives employees responsibility and the employees' performance can be measured against it. There are certain requirements a vision and a mission have to meet. The joined requirements are it must inspire, motivate and energise the employees. Secondly, management with the input of the employees must formulate it. Thirdly, the vision and the mission must be shared with all the employees to ensure goal concurrency. Fourthly, the vision and mission must be positive. Lastly, it must encourage employees to think long term. Vision specific requirements are it must be a leap in the future, specific and understandable to all the employees, unique and original, timeless, something worth the organisation's while, make sense in the market and create a environment of risk taking and experimentation. Mission specific requirements are it must describe the type of business clearly, must be in line with the external environment, state the right to exist, help with the allocation of resources, lead by the vision of the organisation and persuade employees emotionally to achieve the mission. The mission should include a ten to thirty year goal against which employees performance can be measured...

Full textThe church does not only exist for its own sake but it functions as an extension of God, in Christ, towards a world, which is getting lost. The understanding of the church as a missionary entity remains a core question (Net 1994:25). In response to this question different church models have tried to interpret their calling in a given situation in terms of metaphors. This has resulted in various patterns of ministry, describing to us the historical stature of the church. The Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa was established as a missionary endeavour coming from America. It had not been the intention to establish a church (Burger 1995:166). The passion for people who are getting lost was a feature of the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa in its early years. A unique pattern of ministry developed over the years, linked to a specific socio- historical history of origin. The pattern of ministry resulted in a Pentecostal tradition where the gifts of the Holy Spirit were regarded as the answer to the missionary calling of the church. Healing, glossolalia, prophecy and to a lesser degree also other gifts of the Spirit became an integral part of the liturgy. Conversion has been regarded as momentary and each service was characterised by a strong appeal to nonbelievers. Over the years the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Mission has experienced a definite tension between freedom and formalism in the liturgy.

Full textSocial, political and economical changes that take place in the present society, as well as new considerations within the Dutch Reformed Church, have necessitated an investigation into the mission, objectives and services of the Christelik-Maatskaplike Raad of Johannesburg as a branch of the Sinodale Kommissie vir die Diens van Barmhartigheid of Southern Transvaal. This investigation has been done by means of the policy management process and the first 3 steps have been completed. A qualitative approach has been used and the study can be described as exploratory/descriptive. The 13 social workers currently working at the CMR of Johannesburg, as well as 5 members of the governing body of the CMR of Johannesburg were involved in the investigation. A questionaire completed by both groups, was used. The purpose of this questionaire was to determine to which extend the official viewpoints concerning the mission, objectives and services correspond with the perceptions of the social workers and members of the governing body. Two focus groups with the social workers took place while interviews with members of the governing body were held. The purpose of this was to determine how the respondents experience the current services of the CMR, which factors influence current services, how they want services to be and who the target group is, to which services should be redered. Apart from that a literature study on policy management as well as the activities of the SKDB of Southern Transvaal has been done. It was found that the perceptions of both the social workers and the members of the governing body concerning the mission, objectives and services of the CMR differ to a large extend from the of"ficial viewpoints as explained in the constitution. Recommendations concerning the mission and objectives of the CMR have been made and guidelines have been set for the amendment of the policy concerning the rendering of services.

Full textThe objective with this study was to develop a management model for assemblies in the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa (AFM). This model is focussed on the development of positive potential and the equipping of assembly members. A number of assemblies instituted a cell-based structure whilst others are in a process of transformation towards a cell-based assembly structure. The management possibilities of such a structure was therefore considered. An analytical and critical approach, based on the social sciences, was taken to develop a better understanding of people's latent potential. The equipping task of the church was also analysed. With the aforementioned as departing point, consideration was given as to what type of management structure would be the most suitable to develop potential and to equip assembly members. The study indicates the following: Every person has latent positive potential that should be developed. The church leadership is responsible to God for the development and equipping of assembly members. A high standard of management effectiveness could be reached through a Body-of-Christ assembly approach with cell groups as a supporting structure. A purpose-driven management approach should be adopted. The best management model is therefore achieved through a combination of a Body-of-Christ assembly model based on a purposedriven management approach. This thesis is a contribution aimed to assist the leadership in assembly management and structuring. It is hoped that this will result in the development of latent potential, and the equipping of assembly members to support them in their Godly purpose and service.
