Abstract:
Mishkan ha-‘Edut, is the last important work written by Castilian cabalist R.Moshe de Leon (1240-1305). One can consider this work as an oeuvre of maturation of the author’s thought. Known by several works written in Hebrew, R.Moshe de Leon is, according to historians, one of the main authors of the prestigious Sefer ha-Zohar, written in Aramean, that the popular and rabbinic tradition attributes to R. Shim’one bar Yohaï, Galilean rabbi living in the first and second century of the Christian era. The Mishkan ha-‘Edut addresses several fundamental questions: the reason of the existence of the world and its foundation in divinity; the place of man in this world, the profound theological signification and the reason of its path on earth; the nature of transgression of divine commandment and the possibility of repentance for men as psychological beings carrying a divine derived soul; eschatology of the soul, the fate of each of its components after death, its purification in the géhenne and the nature of its stay in the garden of Eden. R.Moshe de Leon goes over, in a more structured way, several topics addressed in his previous writings. In particular, a theory of the soul and its “protections” (malbushim) after death. He insists on the esoteric aspect of the developed topics considering himself as owning a given knowledge. On several occasions, he also insists on his hesitation to disclose “the secrets of formidable and interior wisdom”. He stresses he addresses an elite, those who are seeking this necessary interiority to listen to the message of transmission based on esoteric teaching. One can find in this work some of the Kabbalah’s most fascinating ideas: that god existence is only one in the context of the merging of different worlds, the divine, the celestial and terrestrial; that the relationship between god and the world mimics breathing. This reflects to the task of man during his path on earth, not being directed by a cruel creator but that corresponds to the project of unification of these worlds. Naturally, R. Moshe de Leon takes inspiration in the bible text to confirm his ideas and many others. Mishkan ha-‘Edut is dotted with biblical citations, its arguments are built as a biblical commentary, from which is excluded, as if superficial, the spontaneous interpretation. Talmudic rabbi’s affirmations are equally present, as well as the “old”( qadmonim), who are in reality the kabbalists of his time or previous generations

Abstract:
This thesis looks into the examination of polymer composite wreckage from the perspective of the aircraft accident investigator. It develops an understanding of the process of wreckage examination as well as identifying the potential for visual and macroscopic interpretation of polymer composite aircraft wreckage. The in-field examination of aircraft wreckage, and subsequent interpretations of material failures, can be a significant part of an aircraft accident investigation. As the use of composite materials in aircraft construction increases, the understanding of how macroscopic failure characteristics of composite materials may aid the field investigator is becoming of increasing importance. The first phase of this research project was to explore how investigation practitioners conduct wreckage examinations. Four accident investigation case studies were examined. The analysis of the case studies provided a framework of the wreckage examination process. Subsequently, a literature survey was conducted to establish the current level of knowledge on the visual and macroscopic interpretation of polymer composite failures. Relevant literature was identified and a compendium of visual and macroscopic characteristics was created. Two full-scale polymer composite wing structures were loaded statically, in an upward bending direction, until each wing structure fractured and separated. The wing structures were subsequently examined for the existence of failure characteristics. The examination revealed that whilst characteristics were present, the fragmentation of the structure destroyed valuable evidence. A hypothetical accident scenario utilising the fractured wing structures was developed, which UK government accident investigators subsequently investigated. This provided refinement to the investigative framework and suggested further guidance on the interpretation of polymer composite failures by accident investigators.

Abstract:
Thanks to their extensive literature, the rabbinic movement which was a marginal minority during the early centuries CE became, by late antiquity, the Jewish mainstream, and the rabbinic practice of Judaism became Jewish orthodoxy. Rabbinic writings do not aim to make one laugh, but we have noticed that academic research into the ancient rabbis’ humor contribute significantly to the understanding of rabbinic writings. Our tools for analyzing the humor in tannitic texts are based on previous studies, modern theories about humor, literary analysis techniques and our own personally developed methodology. The research results about humor in the Talmud Yerushalmi, the Talmud Babli and in Midrash Aggada are echoed in the results of our work.We have found in the Mishna and the Tosefta humor in various forms and functions. A comprehensive study of humorous anecdotes in these two textual corpora lends a new perspective about the rabbis and their writings: it also sheds light on the rabbis’ personalities and the house of study atmosphere, struggles within the rabbinic movement as well as with outside opponents, and the evolution of humor between the Mishna, the Tosefta and the Talmudim. The large majority of the stories found in the Mishna and the Tosefta are not humorous, but this proportion is reversed in certain themes: in polemics within the tannaitic movement we find an equal number of humorous and serious texts, and in polemics with opponents to the tannaitic movement, humorous texts are predominant. The tannaitic humor is complex and diversified, it traces the origins of modern Jewish humor not only to the Talmud but back to the tannaitic period, it helps explain some enigmatic texts, and to better know the tannaitic ideology

Abstract:

Title

The anatomy of financial crises and the current one´s effects on the Swedish economy.

Authors

Ifete Binaku and Niklas Holmström

Background

The subprime crisis started in the United States, but was soon transmitted to other countries and even to Sweden. The impact of the financial crisis has had negative consequences for the Swedish real economy, especially in its output. Since Sweden is a big exporting country, its macro economy has been negatively affected by the present global financial crisis.

Purpose

We are interesting to illustrate how the theories can explain the causes and effects of financial crises. Therefore, the aim of this study is simply to acquire knowledge on how the impacts on the Swedish economy can be described by theories on financial crises.

Method

The theoretical models guided our choices of the financial and economic indicators. The thesis employed a quantitative research approach where the empirical materials are collected from the yearly data period: 2005 to 2009. The secondary analysis has been applied where yeas 2005 to 2009 were selected in order to get an overview of variables developments before financial crises started and in meantime.

Results

Our findings showed that the financial crisis has affected the Swedish economy negatively. Furthermore, the repercussion on the Swedish economy can be better explained by certain parts of the theories combined, than by one theory left alone.

The intense circulation of the sacred Jewish writings at the end of the 1st Century CE not only has transferred to the literature a large place of memory and tradition, as it has opened the doors to the regency of rabbinic Judaism as the dominant form of Jewish experience. The great volume of writings that has circulated inside and outside of Palestine has outlined the necessity for the standardization of the Jewish canon by a portion of the Pharisaic rabbinate and, at the same time, it was a representative of the illegitimacy that many communities have seen in some writings, as well as the autonomy that has been directed to the interpretations of the Mitsvah (oral Law) from different halakhot (practical form of the Mitsvah). In face of this process, we return our analyzes to the distinct voices present in this course and which are represented mainly by the Mishnah and the Qumran Manuscripts. The first source, has declared official, contains the compilation of the Oral Law from the studies made by the Schools of Pharisaic Sages established in the ancient Near East from the 4th Century BCE ; the second, resulting of the writings from the Palestinian diaspora, contains a rich collection of the precepts designated in the Oral Law, as well as a sectarian legislation belonging to the Qumran community. Since we have the possibility to find in the Qumran Manuscripts distinct halakhot from those present in the writings that have given shape to the Pharisaic Jewish canon, we place the understanding of the events that have allowed the rise of rabbinical Judaism to the voices that were hidden from this process, provinding a greater clarity to the (in)fidelity of the official Jewish canon with other literary traditions, since the sources do not demonstrate any legislative homogeneity even within Palestine.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in Engineering and Management)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, System Design and Management Program, 2012.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 150-152).
During a 22-month period, between 2008 and 2010, the U.S. Coast Guard experienced seven Class-A aviation mishaps resulting in the loss of 14 Coast Guard aviators and seven Coast Guard aircraft. This represents the highest Class-A aviation mishap rate the Coast Guard has experienced in 30 years. Following each Class-A mishap, the Coast Guard conducted Mishap Analysis Boards (MAB) in accordance with Coast Guard aviation policy. A MAB involves a detailed investigation and report on the causal and contributing factors of a specific mishap and is conducted in accordance with the Department of Defense Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (DOD HFACS) which is based on the 'Swiss Cheese' accident causal analysis model. Individual MAB results did not identify common causal or contributing factors that may be causing systemic failures within the aviation safety system. Subsequently, the Coast Guard completed a more system-focused safety analysis known as the Aviation Safety Assessment Action Plan (ASAAP) comprised of five components: 1) Operational Hazard Analysis; 2) Aviation Safety Survey; 3) Aviation Leadership Improvement Study; 4) Independent Data Analysis Study; and 5) Industry Benchmarking Study. ASAAP recently concluded "complacency in the cockpit and chain of command as the leading environmental factor in the rash of serious aviation mishaps." Although the ASAAP study examined Coast Guard aviation more holistically than individual MABs, it did not apply systems theory and systems engineering approaches. This thesis applies Dr. Leveson's Systems Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP) model to identify, evaluate, eliminate, and control system hazards through analysis, design, and management procedures, in order to more fully examine the Coast Guard's aviation system for potential systemic sources of safety hazards. The case study used in this thesis is the September 2008 mishap, involving a Coast Guard helicopter (CG-6505) conducting hoist training with a Coast Guard small boat, which resulted in the loss of the helicopter and its four-person crew. The analysis identified enhancements to Coast Guard aviation system controls that were not expressly identified as part of the MAB and ASAAP study. These findings will complement the Coast Guard's MAB and ASAAP results to better understand and eliminate systemic Coast Guard aviation safety hazards with the aim of preventing future mishaps. Finally, by comparing the results of the STAMP analysis and the MAB, this thesis attempts to answer the question, 'is the STAMP model better than the 'Swiss Cheese' model in identifying causes to the accidents?'

Abstract:
Human activities that lead to fragmentation and habitat loss are big problems in the world. Due to global climate change the negative effects of fragmented habitats can be catastrophic for many organisms. In the Amazon rainforest, that is most sensitive to human impact, stands a big risk to lose its species diversity. Fragmentation and climate change together seems to escalate the death rate of rainforest plants and that will change the whole ecosystem. Birds and insects are depending on the trees and the trees faces big challenges now. Many of the rainforest organisms have been noticed to emigrate further up to northern altitudes due to the warmer climate and maybe also because of deforestation. Many of the lowland forest birds are predicted to distribute from their origin habitats. The national reserve Allpahuayo Mishana in the Peruvian Amazon is known for its diversity of birds. It is a big challenge for the reserve to maintain the origin forest composition from climate change, which will lead to losses of species. The reserve allows the local community to utilize the land for small-scale uses inside the protected zone. Many of the birds are sensitive for external disturbance. Most human activities are resulting in that the forest becomes less dense, which can lead to that the territory for the birds decreases. This makes it important for the reserve to improve the human land use not to restrict the birds' habitat inside the reserve. This project will investigate if the small-scale land uses affects the understory birds’ diversity and habitat negative. The purpose is to see if the fragmented forests in the reserve, closest to the utilized land, can functioning as a secondary forest for the understory birds, or are the understory birds limited by the small-scale land use, in the national reserve Allpahuayo Mishana? Four sites with various human activities were chosen to investigate if the sites contain any understory birds. The result showed that the most disturbed sites had poor bird diversity compare to the sites with no human disturbance.

This PhD dissertation is a compendium of publications in the field of educational research and pedagogical innovation. These articles are based on the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) Framework by Mishra and Koehler (2006). In order to guarantee an effective learning environment, different aspects need to be considered. On the one hand, the learning methods should be applied in line with the curricular contents to be taught. On the other hand, it is essential to take into account Information and Communication Technologies as a key element in the syllabus design. Finally, it is necessary to count with contrasted mechanisms to assess the learning process and ensure that the aims have been achieved effectively and efficiently. This PhD dissertation presents a series of contributions related to the different elements that form part of the learning and teaching process. The research has been structured around the conceptual framework provided by the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) Framework by Mishra and Koehler. Research has been carried out in the context of innovative pedagogical methodologies such as critical analysis through case studies or the design of new strategies to foster active learning. We shall also present the contributions made to integrate Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in this process and use them as indispensable tools for an efficient implementation to take place. Special emphasis will be laid on evaluation processes, specifically on competencies assessment as a primordial mechanism to guarantee the achievement of learning by presenting new assessment models, and on how, from the gathered information, the students’ knowledge can be gauged so as to improve their learning processes.

De, Beer Misha. "Characterisation of dark chilling effects on the functional longevity of soybean root nodules / Misha de Beer." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8664.

Full text
Abstract:
A large proportion of the world’s nitrogen needs is derived from symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF), which contributes substantially to agricultural sustainability. The partnership between legumes and rhizobia result in the formation of specialised structures called root nodules. Within these nodules SNF is supported by the sucrose transported from the leaves to the nodules for respiration. The end products of SNF in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) root nodules, namely ureides, are transported to the upper parts of the plant to supply nitrogen. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation provides a vital advantage for the production of soybean compared with most grain crops in that soybean fixes the nitrogen required for its growth and for the production of the high-protein content in seed and oil. The process of SNF is dramatically affected by drought, salt, cold and heavy metal stresses. Since SNF is such an important yield-determining factor, a lack in understanding these complexes inevitably delays progress towards the genetic improvement of soybean genotypes and also complicates decisions with regard to the suitability of certain genotypes for the various soybean producing areas in South Africa. The largest soybean producing areas in South Africa are situated at high altitudes, with minimum daily temperatures which can be critically low and impeding the production of soybean. Soybean is chilling sensitive, with growth, development and yield being affected negatively at temperatures below 15°C. Dark chilling (low night temperature) stress has proved to be one of the most important restraints to soybean production in South Africa. Among the symptoms documented in dark chilling sensitive soybean genotypes are reduced growth rates, loss of photosynthetic capacity and pigment content, as well as premature leaf senescence and severely inhibited SNF. Existing knowledge about stress-induced nodule senescence is based on fragmented information in the literature obtained in numerous, and often diverse, legume species. The precise nature and sequence of events participating in nodule senescence has not yet been fully explained. The main objectives of this investigation were to characterise the natural senescence process in soybean nodules under optimal growth conditions and to characterise the alteration of the key processes of SNF in a chilling sensitive soybean genotype during dark chilling. Moreover, to establish whether recovery in nodule functionality following a long term dark chilling period occured, or whether nodule senescence was triggered, and if sensitive biochemical markers of premature nodule senescence could be identified. A known chilling sensitive soybean genotype, PAN809, was grown under controlled growth conditions in a glasshouse. To determine the baseline and change over time for key parameters involved in SNF, a study was conducted under optimal growing conditions over a period of 6 weeks commencing 4 weeks after sowing. The cluster of crown nodules were monitored weekly and analysis included nitrogenase activity, ureide content, respiration rate, leghemoglobin content, sucrose synthase (SS) activity and sucrose content. Further investigations focused on induced dark chilling effects on nodule function to determine the alterations in key parameters of SNF. Plants were subjected to dark chilling (6˚C) for 12 consecutive nights and kept at normal day temperatures (26˚C). The induced dark chilling was either only shoot (SC) exposure or whole plant chilling (WPC). These treatments were selected since, in some areas in South Africa cold nights result not only in shoot chilling (SC) but also in low soil temperatures causing direct chilling of both roots and shoots. To determine if premature nodule senescence was triggered, the recovery following 12 consecutive nights of chilling treatment was monitored for another 4 weeks. It was established that the phase of optimum nitrogenase activity under optimal growing conditions occurred during 4 to 6 weeks after sowing where after a gradual decline commenced. This decline was associated with a decline in nitrogenase protein content and an increase in ureide content. The stability of SS activity and nodule respiration showed that carbon-dependent metabolic processes were stable for a longer period than previously mentioned parameters. The negative correlation that was observed between nitrogenase activity and nodule ureide content pointed towards the possible presence of a feedback inhibition trigger on nitrogenase activity. A direct effect of dark chilling on nitrogenase activity and nodule respiration rate led to a decline in nodule ureide content that occurred without any limitations on the carbon flux of the nodules (i.e. stable sucrose synthase activity and nodule sucrose content). The effect on SC plants was much less evident but did indicate that currently unknown shoot-derived factors could be involved in the minor inhibition of SNF. It was concluded that the repressed rates of respiration might have led to increased O2 concentrations in the nodule, thereby inhibiting the nitrogenase protein and so the production of ureides. It was found that long term chilling severely disrupted nitrogenase activity and ureide synthesis in nodules. Full recovery in all treatments occurred after 2 weeks of suspension of dark chilling, however, this only occurred when control nodules already commenced senescence. This points toward reversible activation of the nitrogenase protein with no evidence in support of premature nodule senescence. An increase in intercellular air space area was induced by long term dark chilling in nodules, specifically by the direct chilling of nodules (WPC treatment). The delayed diminishment of intercellular air space area back to control levels following dark chilling may be an important factor involved in the recovery of nitrogenase activity because enlarged air spaces would have favoured gaseous diffusion, and hence deactivation of nitrogenase, in an elevated O2 environment (due to supressed nodule respiration rates). These findings revealed that dark chilling did not close the diffusion barrier, as in the case of drought and other stress factors, but instead opened it due to an increase in air space areas in all regions of the nodule. In conclusion, this study established that dark chilling did not initiate premature nodule senescence and that SNF demonstrated resilience, with full recovery possible following even an extended dark chilling period involving low soil temperatures.

Macrae, Duncan Eoin. "The Books of Numa: Writing, Intellectuals and the Making of Roman Religion." Thesis, Harvard University, 2013. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10899.

Abstract:
This dissertation provides an intellectual and social history of learned writing on Roman religious culture during the late Republic and early Empire. I examine the ways in which an elite learned literature, for which I propose the name "civil theology", constructed "Roman religion" as a religious system. The first part of the dissertation is an intellectual history of civil theology, especially focused on how these learned texts generated "Roman religion" as an object of knowledge. In order to elucidate how texts can authoritatively construct a religious system, I pursue a comparison between civil theology and the Mishnah, a rabbinic textual compilation. The second part of the dissertation is a social history of civil theology, concentrating on the social contexts of production and reception of the discourse. Firstly, I demonstrate how the discourse was embedded in the social relations of the profoundly competitive late Republican elite. Civil theology was not a socially marginal intellectual activity. Rather, knowledge about Roman religion provided resources for the social self-presentation of the elite. Secondly, I consider how civil theology became implicated in the new imperial socio-political order. Emperors drew on civil-theological knowledge to legitimize "religious reforms" and their personal rule; for the aristocracy, civil theology became entangled with responses to the new situation of autocracy. In a conclusion, I outline the continuing influence of civil theology and its construction of "Roman religion" in the high imperial period and late antiquity and consider how Roman civil theology can complicate the established scholarly approaches to the relationship between books and religion.

Barth, Timothy. "INFLUENCE MAP METHODOLOGY FOR EVALUATING SYSTEMIC SAFETY ISSUES." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2006. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3271.

Full text
Abstract:
"Raising the bar" in safety performance is a critical challenge for many organizations. Contributing factor taxonomies organize information on why accidents occur. Therefore, they are essential elements of accident investigations and safety reporting systems. Organizations must balance efforts to identify causes of specific accidents with efforts to evaluate systemic safety issues in order to become more proactive about improving safety. This research successfully addressed two problems: (1) limited methods and metrics exist to support the design of effective taxonomies, and (2) influence relationships between contributing factors are not explicitly modeled within a taxonomy. The primary result of the taxonomic relationship modeling efforts was an innovative "dual role" contributing factor taxonomy with significant improvements in comprehensiveness and diagnosticity over existing taxonomies. The influence map methodology was the result of a unique graphical and analytical combination of the dual role taxonomy and influence relationship models. Influence maps were developed for several safety incidents at Kennedy Space Center. An independent assessment was conducted by a team of experts using the new dual role taxonomy and influence chain methodology to evaluate the accuracy and completeness of contributing factors identified during the formal incident investigations. One hundred and sixteen contributing factors were identified using the influence map methodology. Only 16% of these contributing factors were accurately identified with traditional tools, and over half of the 116 contributing factors were completely unaddressed by the findings and recommendations of the formal incident reports. The new methodology is being applied to improve spaceport operations and enhance designs of future NASA launch systems.
