Abstract:
This study politicizes the mixed relationship in Israeli-Palestinian literature. I examine Arab-Jewish and interethnic Jewish intimacy in works by Palestinian national poet Mahmoud Darwish, canonical Israeli novelist A. B. Yehoshua, select anthologized Anglophone and translated Palestinian and Israeli poetry, and Israeli feminist writer Orly Castel-Bloom. I also examine the material cultural discourses issuing from Israel’s textile industry, in which Arabs and Jews interact. Drawing from the methodology of twentieth-century Brazilian miscegenation theorist Gilberto Freyre, I argue that mixed intimacies in the Israeli-Palestinian imaginary represent a desire to restructure a hegemonic public sphere in the same way Freyre’s Brazilian mestizo was meant to rhetorically undermine what he deemed a Western cult of uniformity. This project constitutes a threefold contribution. I offer one of the few postcolonial perspectives on Israeli literature, as it remains underrepresented in the field in comparison to its Palestinian counterparts. I also present the first sustained critique of the hetero relationship and the figure of the hybrid in Israeli-Palestinian literature, especially as I focus on its representation for political options rather than its aesthetic intrigue. Finally, I reexamine and apply Gilberto Freyre in a way that excavates him from critical interment and advocates for his global relevance.

Basave, Benítez Agustín Francisco. "A current of Mexican nationalism : Andrés Molina Enriquez's theory of miscegenation." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1991. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:323ace75-06f1-4a41-a284-645f3375db5f.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with Andrés Molina Enriquez's pro-miscegenation theory. Molina (1868-1940), a Spencirian evolutionist who believed race struggle is history's driving force, departs from the premise that Mexico will not be a cohesive, progressive nation until all Mexicans become Mestizos - i.e., the product of racial intermingling between Spaniards and Indians. Thus, the analysis of this theory is the main objective of the thesis. In order to analyse Molina's theory within its historical context, however, the preliminary section of the thesis briefly describes the thoughts of those Mexican intellectuals who had previously proclaimed ethnic homogeneity -via miscegenation- the key to national stability and development. Similarly, the last part of the thesis presents the ideas of some of Molina's successors, those who were in favor of miscegenation - not only a racial one but also a cultural one - in postrevolutionary Mexico. The first and last parts of the thesis allow us to see pro-miscegenation as a current of the Mexican intelligentsia's quest for national identity. The central part of it - the one devoted to Molina's theory, undoubtedly the most important and sophisticated contribution in the field - gives us a general picture of the contradictory nature of this current of thought. Even though it is clear that a pervasive miscegenation made ever more Mexican intellectuals endorse the idea that Mestizos are the real people of Mexico. The analysis of Molina's writings shows that he attempted to predict the supremacy of Mestizos with a theoretical framework that leads him to the opposite direction. Indeed, no matter how much he twisted it, Spencerian evolutionism did not serve him (or his contemporary pro-miscegenationists) to prove white-racism wrong. The conclusion is that Molina, as most of his fellow "Mestizophilia" supporters, chose to hail the ethnic group that represented an ever-growing majority of the Mexican population, and tried to build a scientific theory to prove the supremacy of that group. But in doing so he had to use the only methodological tools he had learned at the positivist schools of Porfirian Mexico. The result is a contradictory theory that, nevertheless, sheds light on the path to national identity in Mexico.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a new paradigm for understanding the historical roots of the myth of racial democracy in Brazil. In order to better comprehend the co-existence of race discrimination and racial democracy in Brazil it is argued that the myth itself needs to be subjected to an analysis which foregrounds the historically unequal relations of both race and gender. This study demonstrates how the enigma that is Brazilian race relations is the result of two major oversights in the scholarly work to date. First, the lack of critical attention to the historical processes and practices which gave rise to the so-called unique version of race relations in Brazil: manumission and miscegenation. Second, the sidelining of the role of gender and sex, as well as the specific and central place of black women’s labour, in theoretical formulations about Brazilian race relations. The overarching intellectual aim of this thesis is to invert the way notions of familiarity and intimacy have been represented in the history of miscegenation and manumission in Brazilian slave society. The role of intimacy in the social history of race relations is instead shown to be firmly located within a hierarchy of race and gender inequalities predicated on the inferiority of blacks and women. In turn, this thesis explores how these race and gender inequalities intersected to inform and shape enslaved women’s versions of resistance and visions of freedom. In doing so this study unpicks some of the notions of advantage and privilege traditionally associated with women in general and light skin colour in particular in the processes of manumission and miscegenation; notions that are foundational to the myth of racial democracy. Through an examination and analysis of primary sources pertaining to the lives of enslaved and freedwomen and their descendants in nineteenth-century Bahia, this study brings together different areas of their lived experiences of enslavement, manumission, miscegenation and freedom as these women came into contact with the authorities at pivotal moments in their lives. Collectively, these sources and the analysis thereof expose the limitations of advantage or privilege that have been associated with being female, parda or mulatta in the historiography of Brazilian slave society in general and the literature on manumission in particular. By foregrounding and highlighting the ways in which overlapping inequalities of race, gender and status determined experiences of enslavement and expectations of freedom during slavery, this study produces a new approach to interpreting race and gender history in Brazil, and a more comprehensive understanding of Brazilian slave labour relations.

Abstract:
Writing the history of sexuality in the United States is a notoriously slippery task. For years, scholars ignored the history of American sexuality, abiding by the assumption that sex belongs in the bedroom, the private realm, and thus has no bearing on the high politics and economics that used to dominate American historiography. Interracial sexuality occupied a particular historical silence in a nation whose Supreme Court would not strike down all laws against interracial marriage until 1967. In his 1995 presidential address to the Organization of American Historians, Gary Nash declared that of race-mixing and mixed-race people in America to be a "hidden history." Since the late 1990s, however, dozens of monographs and anthologies have appeared exploring sexuality in colonial and early America. Despite the best intentions of colonial authorities to establish order and social hierarchy in the New World, both environment and human nature militated against the observance of ironclad sexual regulations and racial boundaries. Reinforcing this new American sexual history has been a sophisticated historiography on legislation against interracial marriage. These works recognize the public nature of marriage as a means of ordering society, defining citizenship, and even constructing racial and gender difference. While the physical act of race mixing has occurred throughout American history, the settings in which this mixing acquired meaning - positive and negative - have necessarily been linked to imperatives of social control and the maintenance of that control. Yet scholars of interracial marriage assert that antimiscegenation laws were not historical absolutes but contingent, contested, shifting measures across time and space subject to debate and contravention. The twin revelations that interracial sex was both privately common and publicly important do not yet tell us how the civil and political associations that operated as intermediaries between individuals and the state dealt with it. And in the case of associations that sought emancipation and civil rights for African-Americans, we still lack a thorough understanding of how they grappled with the strong prejudice against interracial marriage and mixed-race people as they agitated for black inclusion in society and the polity on equal terms. This study contributes to that understanding by taking a broad view of both the African-American civil rights struggle and the paradoxical history of interracial marriage in the United States between 1833 and 2000. It divides that one hundred sixty-seven-year span into five periods of struggle (with occasional overlap) and focuses on those organizations that were in the vanguard of protest at the time: the American Anti-Slavery Society (1833-1870), the African Methodist Episcopal Church (1865-1910), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (1909-1967), the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (1960-1972), and the Multiracial Movement (1975-2000). Each of the civil rights organizations under study here possessed a historically-informed understanding of the role antimiscegenation laws played in establishing and maintaining racial hierarchy. This historical awareness created an internal logic, or "organic intellect," that shaped the attitudes these organizations adopted to interracial sex, marriage, and love as potential protest targets or as long-term means of ending prejudice. Part of this study recounts these organization's unexpected engagement with interracial intimacy despite its long history of criminalization. Far from a non-issue or a liability better left ignored, criticism of the sexual enforcement of racial boundaries permeates the sources these activists left behind. As much as they were influenced by external hostility, however, attitudes toward interracial love were also shaped by their internal organic intellect. This organic intellect acknowledged that restrictions on cross-racial intimacy served the ends of white supremacy. It also knew that interracial sex was as old as America, and neither it nor the presence of generations of ambiguously-complected mulattoes had eradicated that prejudice. This historical pragmatism acted with a sense of group loyalty that complicated any advocacy of wholesale interracial marriage, because to do so suggested a racial self-loathing and hankering after whiteness that ran counter to the freedom struggle itself. For all its apparent power, antimiscegenation laws never convinced activist African-Americans and their white allies that the color line was impermeable or that black and white could not love each other. Even so, the black freedom struggle could also never be convinced that love - or at least sex - would fix everything. This study uncovers the unexpected ways in which racism and white supremacy have infiltrated not only American sexual mores but our very notion of family and our definition of love. Both the permissive and prohibitive impulses that have shaped the contradictory history of interracial sexuality in America reveal complicated truths about our ancestors and ourselves.

Collins, Corrine Esther. "70's "Miscegenation" and Blaxploitation: Fran Ross's Interracial Oreo, and the Super Bad Blaxploitation Hero." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3875.

Full text
Abstract:
Fran Ross's only novel, Oreo, explores the nature of multiethnic American identities through an empowered female character that embarks on a Theseus-like journey. Ross devotes significant portions of the novel to the introduction of Oreo's family and individual character, in order to carefully outline her interracial and multiethnic upbringing as an African-Jewish American girl. In order to understand Oreo's political and aesthetic sensibilities, this thesis explores the cinematic representations of interracial relationships during the time that Oreo was written, and argues that Fran Ross's main character is in direct conversation with the predominant 70s black movie and political culture of blaxploitation and Black nationalism. Blaxploitation cinema's rise during the early 70s was facilitated by a burgeoning literary genre depicting an urban black experience aligned with Black nationalist ideologies, to which Fran Ross responds with her interracial protagonist. While not all Black nationalist leaders and supporters felt that blaxploitation movies furthered the revolution, the politics of the movement were still present in the movies, especially in regard to interracial relationships. Black nationalist ideologies regarding interracial relationships positioned sexual relationships between black people and white people as counter-revolutionary, because they did not result in the propagation of the black race, and were reminiscent of the rapes that occurred during the slave period and beyond. In contrast with these cinematic depictions, Oreo is a desexualized, witty, and athletic mixed raced female, who challenges the stereotypes of black cinematic culture and the politics of Black nationalism. As Oreo was written at the end of the blaxploitation genre's height (1974), its politics appear to be in direct dialogue with the representation of blackness in the movie genre. Ross even goes as far as rewriting scenes and stereotypes from blaxploitation movies, positioning Oreo as a critique of the Blaxploitation genre, and the genre's Black nationalist political agenda surrounding interracial relationships.

Marais, Marcia Helena. ""Passing women": gender and hybridity in the fiction of three female South African authors." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/3696.

Full text
Abstract:
A key aim of this study is to shed light on the representation of coloured women with reference to racial passing, using fictive characters depicted in Sarah Gertrude Millin’s (1924) God’s Stepchildren,Zoë Wicomb’s (2006) Playing in the Light, and Pat Stamatélos’s (2005) Kroes, as presented by these three racially distinct female South African authors.Since I propose that literature provides a link between a subjective history and the under-represented narratives from the margins, I use literature to reimagine these. I analyse the ways in which the authors present ‘hybrid’ identities within their characters in different ways, and provide an explanation and contextual basis for the exploration of the theme of ‘passing for and as white’ within South Africa’s complex history. I provide a sociological explanation of the act of racial passing in South Africa with reference to the United States by incorporating Nella Larsen’s (1929) Passing. Since the analyses will concentrate on coloured females within the texts, gendered identity and female sexuality and stereotypes will be the focus. I look at the act and agent of passing, the role of raced and gendered performance in giving meaning to social identities, and the way in which the female body is constructed in racial terms in order to confer identity. Tracing the historical origins of coloured identity and coloured female identity, I interrogate this colonial, post-colonial, apartheid and post-apartheid history by employing a feminist lens. A combination of postcolonial feminist discourse analysis, sociological inquiry and feminist narrative analysis are therefore the methods I use to achieve my research aims.

Abstract:
For over forty years, at the turn of this century, the white settlers of Southern Rhodesia devoted considerable energy to the discussion and the regulation of inter-racial sexual relations. The settlers' worries about maintaining their position in power were expressed, in part, in the periodic outbreaks of 'black peril' hysteria, a term which well-captures white fears about the threat that African men were thought to represent to white women. Although voluntary sexual encounters between white women and black men were prohibited from 1903 onwards, no such prohibition existed for white men in their relations with black women. The white women made several attempts to have legislation passed prohibiting such liasons, and failed largely because in doing so they were perceived to be challenging the authority of the white men. The regulation of interracial sexual intercourse thus served to reinforce the white male domination of Rhodesian society.

This dissertation focuses on the issue of hybridity in Marguerite Duras' corpus of Indochinese texts, as well as on the meeting of identities in the colonial realm. In order to identify the problematics of colonial coexistence, we will address the themes of the encounter between the Orient and the Occident, the use of hybrid discourse and the role of memory in the process of rewriting. Edward Said's Orientalism theory as well as Homi Bhabha's concept of ambivalence in colonial discourse will serve as the basis for the analysis of the Indochinese cycle. Far from being a totalizing experience, hybridity will reveal itself as being a harrowing dichotomy.

Abstract:
My research deals with the novel A Mulata by Carlos Malheiros Dias, focusing on its use of naturalist aesthetics to represent the racial question in late-nineteenth-century Brazil. I also examine the controversial literary-critical dialogue Dias established with the Brazilian and Portuguese intellectual currents of his time. Taking the author\'s antirepublican ideals into account throughout, I argue that A Mulata features a set of preconceptions regarding Brazilian national identity that would gain followers in some sectors of Brazil\'s intelligentsia and which persisted explicitly or in more covert form into the twentieth century. These preconceptions explain many aspects of the way in wich Brazil conceived of itself as a nation and how it represented itself through literature. Despite this connection, A Mulata was rejected by the intellectual class of Brazil.

Abstract:
The 'Indian' as an allegorical figure is highly significant in American cultural history, representing not only the assumptions and racial logics surrounding the Native American but also engaging with beliefs about the frontier experience, the nation's origins, and American exceptionalism. By 1887 this figure had been formed into the 'vanishing' and 'noble' Plains Indian, which remains the popular image of the Native American today. Between 1887 and 1934 however the national policies on Native American issues experienced a revolutionary change from the enforced assimilation of the Dawes Act to the preserving concerns of the Indian Reorganization Act. By examining the way in which cultural productions of the time negotiated the figures of the 'Indian' when brought into contact with the 'white' in tales of interracial relationships, and the resultant 'half breed' which was the outcome of such contact, this study highlights the consistencies in the racial logics which supported both acts and illuminates their shared roots. By analysing over seventy novels and short stories along with numerous early films and images this study adds depth to our understanding of the images of the 'Indian' and the 'half breed' as well providing a new perspective on both the Dawes Act and the Indian Reorganization Act. It clarifies the racial logics at the heart of late-nineteenth and early- twentieth century American society and examines how these logics were constructed in new ways around old assumptions. In this way the importance of immutable racial classification and a belief in inheritable racial 'character' is highlighted, in an America shown to be particularly concerned with racial demarcations to support its political and social structures. Ambiguity is shown to be the greatest challenge to these structures and to have given rise to new ways of reasserting essentially racist ideologies. This study is a contribution to a growing body of research into marginality in American history and racial belief, and brings a new perspective on the image of the 'Indian' in American culture while shedding light on the little studied figure of the' half breed' .

Abstract:
At first hand, this thesis aims at observing the identitary construction of landowning multiracial women in Jean Rhyss Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), Janice Windles True Women (1993) and Bernardo Guimarãess Rosaura: a enjeitada (1883), considering three distinct aspects: the emphasis on Multiculturalism in novels concerning interracialization in the 19th century; the protagonists attempt to pass as Caucasians before local elites and their repressed identification with the culture from lower classes. In this realm, I highlight interceptive and disjointing points between Bernardo Guimarães and the other authors, once the former discusses identity as a hereditary and national factor, and the latter ones interpret it as a free-willing and cultural construct. On the whole, this research shows how these three authors resist an 18th and 19th-century scientific discursive formation which envisaged the mestizo as a degenerated creature, with metabolic and ontological unbalance, and how they strive to advocate the image of the miscegenated on the world very idiosyncratically. Considering that Wide Sargasso Sea and True Women are rereadings of 19th century novels, the thesis also encompasses intertextuality in two different manners: on the one hand, it focuses on the intrinsic relations between the hypertext and the hypotext; on the other hand, it points out the likely relation between Guimarães and the authors Rhys and Windle revisit

Furlong, Patrick Jonathan. "The Mixed Marriages Act (1949) : a theological critique based on the investigation of legislative action and church responses to this legislation." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17013.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 208-228.
The thesis is concerned with the nature of the interaction between church and state, and more generally between politics and religion, in the matter of so-called mixed marriages, and more particularly the debate surrounding the South African Mixed Marriages Act of 1949. The methodology of the study is interdisciplinary, dealing in detail with historical material as a basis for theological reflection and analysis. In the first chapter, marriage is dealt with generally from a theological viewpoint. Various approaches to marriage are considered, such as those in African society, the Bible, and in the Catholic and Reformation traditions. In contrast with the fertility-lineage, group-oriented ethic detected in the early part of the Old Testament and in many preliterate and patriarchal societies, a personalist and essentially 'sacramental' model of marriage is developed on the basis of New Testament teaching and later Christian theological reflection. The effects of a fertility-lineage and group-oriented ethic of marriage in South Africa are demonstrated in chapter two, which deals with the drive for anti-miscegenation laws in that country, with special reference to the role of the Afrikaans Reformed churches in this regard. The third chapter takes up this historical material, examining the nature of the initial debate on the Mixed Marriages Act in 1949-1950 and the aims of the Nationalist Government in introducing this legislation. The contrasting responses to the Act on the part of the Afrikaans Reformed churches and the more 'liberal', non-racial, mainly English-speaking churches are also considered here. In the fourth chapter the developments in the debate surrounding the Act since 1949 are discussed, with special reference to key points in the changing attitudes of the churches (especially the Afrikaans Reformed churches) to this legislation. This provides the background to the heated debate since the mid-seventies, when the Government began to show apparent signs of favouring a reformulation of apartheid which purportedly aimed at eliminating the most obviously racially biased aspects of that policy. The final chapter examines the theological assumptions of Afrikaans Reformed thought, and attempts to show how its roots in a particular view of Calvinism, Kuyperian Neo-Calvinism and the Bible result in the kind of fertility-lineage ethic which makes support for the Act possible. An effort is made to show the theological inadequacies of this thought from a Christian perspective, and to suggest an alternative, more dynamic theology, which recognizes the importance of individual choice and human rights. The impediments to such a fundamental reorientation are recognised, however, and it is argued that any major changes in position on the miscegenation laws on the part of either reformist government politicians or the Afrikaans Reformed churches in the near future will face major resistance.

Rosenthal, Olimpia Eurydice. "Condemning Mestizaje: Spatial Segregation and the Racialization of Sex in Colonial Latin America." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/311453.

Abstract:
The central objective of this project is to chart the relationship between early-modern notions of race that developed in the Iberian-Atlantic world and systems of colonial racialization that emerged in the Americas in relation to mestizaje. By analyzing three case-studies from Latin American's early-colonial period, I show that as anxieties about racial mixture got intertwined with the Iberian notion of purity of blood, spatial segregation and the curtailment of interracial sex became two of the main issues around which early-colonial discourses on mestizaje were articulated. In chapter one, I justify the use of the term race for analyzing this period by drawing from current scholarship whose aim is to historicize this notion as a means to better theorize it. Moreover, I explain the specific elements that inform the theory of race that I develop throughout this project, including Bernasconi's formulation of race as a border concept, JanMohamed's notion of racialized sexuality, and Foucault's account of how biopower can help us theorize the interconnections between race and reproductive sex. In the second chapter, I examine Vasco de Quiroga's decisive influence in the formation of the Dual Republic model of spatial segregation in Mexico, and I show how the racialization of space during this period led to a dualistic conception of society that by definition left no place for the liminal figure of the mestizo. In chapter three, I examine a policy adapted by the Portuguese Crown during the sixteenth century whereby white Portuguese women were taken to Brazil in an effort to reduce interracial sex and miscegenation. Lastly, in chapter four I analyze Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala's abject characterization of mestizos in Peru, and I demonstrate that two of the key issues around which he organized his demand for colonial reforms were spatial segregation and the curtailment of interracial sex. By examining these three cases-studies comparatively, and further incorporating a transatlantic perspective that situates them within broader developments that were taking place during the early-modern period, I emphasize the importance that the study of colonial Latin America has for current efforts to historicize the notion of race.

Abstract:
Violent Disruptions contends that the works of Richard Wright and William Faulkner are mirror images of each other and that each illustrates American race relations in distinctly powerful and prescient ways. While Faulkner portrays race and American identity through sex and its relationship to the imagination, Wright reveals a violent undercurrent beneath interracial encounters that the shared imagination triggers. Violent Disruptions argues that the spectacle of the interracial body anchors the cultural imaginations of our collective society and, as it embodies and symbolizes American slavery, drives the violent acts of individuals. Interracial productions motivate the narratives of Richard Wright and William Faulkner through a system of displacement of signs. Though these tropes maintain their currency today, they are borne out of cultural imaginings over two hundred years old. Working within the framework of the imaginary, Violent Disruptions places these now historical texts into the twenty-first century's discourse of race and American identity.

Magister Scientiae Dentium - MSc(Dent)
Aim To analyze the demographic profile, clinical data and radiographs of patients who had third molar surgery under general anaesthesia at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of the Western Cape over a 10 year period. Introduction Minor oral surgical procedures are carried out by Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons daily. The surgical removal of third molars is a large part of Minor Oral Surgery which is common throughout the world. The general impression of third molar surgery performed by experienced professionals is the ease of the operation, however no-matter how experienced one may be, a simple procedure should never be underestimated (Carvalho and Do Egito Vasconselos, 2011). New surgical techniques, as well as extensive training, skill and experience have led to the evolution of oral surgery and allowed this procedure to be carried out in a less traumatic manner. Certain factors precipitate third molar surgery to be performed in theatre as opposed to the dental clinic setting. These factors will be discussed in this research report.

Abstract:
Asian/American women occupy a highly circumscribed subject position in popular Western culture that entails a unique reading of our bodies. My discussion of this group will gain greater depth and scope by using Black body theory as a theoretical framework to better understand how Asian/American bodies become a site to enact a multitude of fantasies, fears, and anxieties. I will examine three case studies: the construction of the interracial “romance” featuring Asian/American women produced in classical Hollywood cinema, interracial pornography featuring Asian/American female performers, and the independent works of Asian/American feminist filmmakers. Topics interrogated include the over-determination of non-White bodies and possibilities for destabilizing bodies and crafting their new legibility.

Abstract:
This essay will explore the notion of mestizaje in the Republic of Argentina. Specifically, it will use the Argentine Patagonia as a point of departure for this analysis, an area in which conquest resulted in a community of mixed-race and mixed culture individuals. The juxtaposition of the struggle between white settlers and Mapuche-Tehuelche Indians of the region demonstrates a continuity in discrimination in the nation's history. For this very reason, the area represents a general pattern present throughout the country, and, hence, I use it as a prototype to draw conclusions about race relations in the nation as a whole. I will show that this is a discussion not openly explored in the historiography of the republic. The popular discourses that promoted the creation of a white population is at the core of this issue. Furthermore, the continuation of such discourses into the twenty-first century contribute to the notion of separatism within mainstream, academic, and government circles. Argentina, however, both today and over the past four hundred years, has been diverse and mixed. Because of the complexity of its population, mestizaje is a viable area of study for Argentina. The history of whites and Indians in Patagonia exemplify this analysis.

Abstract: This work aims to seek elements to see how was the process of implementation of Law 10.639 / 03- which amended Law of Directives and Bases of National Education No. 9396 to include in the official curriculum of the Public Education Network and the mandatory private theme "History and Afro-Brazilian and African" - in municipal schools in the city of Campinas, state of São Paulo, Brazil and reveal the silence on racial themes in the curriculum of public schools, considering the existence of two local laws that already provide for the inclusion of racial themes in the curriculum of public schools prior federal law 10639 / 09. The 1990 Organic Law of the municipality predicts in the Article 224 that "the school curriculum in all educational units of the municipality, subjects with an interdisciplinary approach covering, among others, environmental education, history of Africa and the black people in Brazil, history of women in society, the traffic code education" and the law no. 9778 of 1998 which " included in the Municipal School curriculum, not excluding Adult Education Program, in the history subject, teaching concerning the study of the black people in the social, economic and cultural Brazilian training but what was noticed in fact was a silence regarding the race issue in the school curriculum". By means of the Official Gazette of the Municipality from 1990 to 2008 were rescued the normative acts that had been posted by the executive and legislative powers to meet the provisions in municipal and federal laws. The text sets out from the author¿s memory, on how she learned the Brazilian history and how students learn it nowadays, questioning what this country is and why there is the necessity of a mandatory legislation to ensure the teaching of African Brazilian history and culture, judging that this is a country made up of three ethnic groups: white, black and indigenous people. From this point, the research will deconstruct some myths and add information to the history, such as the claims of black movement for education, how the racial issue entered the government agenda, how was the Slavery in Brazil, about the history of Campinas where it was developed this research and your great importance during the colonial period and the beginning of the century due to the accumulation of capital generated from slave labor. A survey of documentary character, in the official gazettes of the municipality of Campinas were analyzed - São Paulo, in the period from 1990 to 2008, revealed that although the racial issue has entered the Government's agenda in 1990 through Organic law of the Municipality and the Department of Education Agenda through Ordinance No. 1163/90, the normative acts which indicated to the adequacy of the curriculum of the schools of the City Department of Education in order to meet the provisions of municipal law, were only made from the publication of the Federal Law 10,639 / 03. Until this date were rare normative acts that indicated to an intention to implement the Municipal Education Network actions that produce changes in the school curriculum. Through Hip Hop, the theme of sickle cell anemia and capoeira, the race issue was introduced in city schools. Other acts followed from a training policy through training courses, workshops, create a program designed specifically for the training of managers, faculty and staff, exhibitions, lectures, among others, that led the subject into the school space and consequently an adjustment of the curriculum that would meet the requirements by law

Abstract:
This dissertation makes an analysis about the Brazilian miscegenation, mainly between black and white people, from the alagoano anthropologists perspective Arthur Ramos in his book on miscegenation in Brazil (A mestiçagem no Brasil). The objective is to understand the role he played in miscegenation reversing positive image, especially since the 1930s, when Arthur Ramos, belonging to a Brazilian intellectuals group, concerned with the building national unity, raised the mestizos figure to a particular category, thus, a national singularity, but always linked the idea of racial democracy. In this operation, Ramos denied the thesis of the mestizos degeneration, which earned his intellectual and political debates ahead about the miscegenation defense (physical and cultural). He was one of characters for focus interpretation of national history changing, who left from the race to the cultural context. In this way, acted vigorously to brazilian racial democracy defending, seen by him as a result of the legal barriers absence original from the Portuguese colonization. Thus, this studying treats about the function and meaning of Ramoss action in the international scientific space for his short but significant work in the Department of Social Sciences of UNESCO, which surrendered to the Brazilian Social Sciences visibility as a scientific producer of knowledge, as well as UNESCO project coming to Brazil in the 1950s. This research examines a posthumous work, The miscegenation in Brazil (A mestiçagem no Brasil), little bit known and worked, but unique meaning, considering his production from the World War II atrocities and the racist conception return in the nineteenth century by the Nazis.

This study investigates the performance of the popular group Os Guaranys in the festivities of the Independence of Itaparica in Brazil, between 1939 and 2003. The research is guided through the perspective of Cultural History and it is run essentially based on oral sources. Throughout its career, the group joined the civic parade and started out staging the unique outdoor popular theatrical performance A Roubada da Rainha. By the participation of Os Guaranys in the festivities it is possible to identify a reconfiguration of the tradition that refers to the memory of the battles of 1822-23 and to the Caboclo. The analysis of this collective body promotes the understanding of the conditions of possibility for permanence and change in the hybrid identity references, especially those that relate to the figure of Caboclo. The object of study is part of a broader phenomenon of construction of Brazilian nationality that refers to the elaborated ethnic plurality as miscegenation. In another way, Os Guaranys developed in the field of festivities and manipulated better the resources available, which allowed its permanence until today, despite the disappearance of other groups. This process was enabled by its institutionalization, in which civic, religious and ethnic references that referred to the figure of Caboclo were driven. It gave opportunity to the group take the centrality of the commemorations between Six and Nine on January every year and forge a discourse of Brazilian nationality.

The study environment of this thesis is the region of Arraial (Village)/Freguesia (Parish) de Santa Luzia, in the Captaincy of Goiás, since its foundation in 1746 until 1800. The objects of this research are the plots people lived during that period, which shaped and formed that "saludável" (healthy) village, as have reported, in 1758, some of the main authorities of the place, the Captain-Major and Ordinary Judge Manoel Jozé de Andrade and the Ordinary Judge and Captain Bento de Souza e Menezes. As leading thread of this study, we propose thinking the process of occupation of gold rich areas of the Captaincy of Goiás from the point of view of the Portuguese economic scenario throughout the 17th and 18th centuries; analyzing the traffic and trade practiced by businessmen who crossed the paths and tracks that lead to Minas dos Goyazes, as well as understanding the strategies developed by the slave and freed population, miners, Indians and mixed-race peoples in shaping the family relationships and ritual kinship. This work is the result of the uneasiness that has emerged by finding only a few studies on the Frequesia de Santa Luzia in the 18th century. The main goal was to know the subjects who, in the second half the 1700´s, have dealt with forced migration, sought fast enrichment, got acquainted with marriage and the various types of family, experienced social rise and lived with the stigma of miscegenation. With such characters, we resume the pristine traces of the formation of this Captaincy. Observing the passports issued in the Captaincy of Bahia and the notes of Faithful Records (Fiéis de Registro) we came into contact with businessmen and blacks convoys (comboieiros) mina, angola, congo and Mozambique. The aged manuscripts written by pastors bring out Creoles, goats, mixed-race children, atapuyados (miscegenation with Tapuia Indians) and semi-caboclos. In official letters we observed the demands of mulattoes who, ennobled by patents, behaved as pardos (Brown) and "good men" and; sensing the "certain death and uncertain times ahead," men made their wills acknowledging illegitimate children, and freed African and Brown women distributed their fortunes. To perform this work we sought information on reference books on micro-history, specialized bibliography and several kinds of documents and, what we found was a dynamic society, although marked by hierarchies and (im)permeabilities.

In Rio Grande do Sul as well as Portuguese and Spanish, was significant immigration from other European, especially Germans and Italians. This study aims to evaluate the European, Amerindian and African contribution to formation of gaucho population. For this we used the two uniparental systems and surnames of individuals. Has been analysed 190 volunteers, borned in the seven mesoregions has compound Rio Grande do Sul, those colected a blood sample. It was observed that a high frequency of European contribution (87% on the Y chromosome and 76% in mtDNA), consistent with the couple’s coming of Portuguese immigrants, Germans and Italians. Surnames’ data demonstrate also these surnames are most commonly found in gaucho population.

The present study examines the performance of Mexican essayist and intellectual Justo Sierra Méndez (1848-1912), in the project of problematization and defense of a mestizo identity for Mexico in the late nineteenth century. The main point of the research is to analyze the categories listed by Sierra in his essays, starting from the assumptions of Cultural History, in order to systematize and provide the debate on mestizaje, identity and politics in nineteenth century Mexico. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine Sierra's thinking regarding the multicultural formation of the Mexican nation amid the social and political problems that besieged social thought in that country between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This research proposes to investigate the translations between textualities of the proverb from the Angolan and African contexts and discourses that these ones cross: from a model of experimentation of avant-garde art that mix between chromaticism and sounds to the graphicvisual forms. In the corpus are listed bases of these textualities of three regions: the pot script, mats, in Cabinda, northern Angola; the sand on drawings or lusona, and rock art in Lunda, east of Angola; the dances of shepherds in the southern region of Angola. These cases are analyzed from the perspective of cultural miscegenation, of baroque cultures mechanisms in Africa and how assumptions of border cultures. The narratives in vehicles of different media are examined taking for granted the assumption the hypothesis that the images and textualities are constantly created, recreated and updated by each other, with this vehicle to take up the role of traditional artistic forms with intersecting forms. As Amalio Pinheiro, this circularity is treated by zigzags in reframing of cultural elements, being Africa the place of miscegenation and intersecting par excellence. Investigate these media-art procedures noncanonical from primitive realities also means understanding the processes of abstraction and migration of things in relation nature-human-culture-city, it sets the fictionalization of the life and textualization of quotidian elements. Ana Hatherly speaks of the need to reconnection between people and the tradition, which it can be dynamic. To some extent, these media practices carried out by the proverb suggests to reformulate the social reality with reallocations and changes of power in a spectacular way and into the fantastic and fable by the hypertext formation, which is dynamic and has several meanings. The role of the media has proved preponderant as a guide for these elaborations. But it is precisely from there that the problem this study arose: what are the translations undertaken for the media used by the proverb also converted on the way to the various textualities? This work is linked to the study of culture and media environments and their methodology is based on immersion in printed and oral literature through collected documents and meetings with popular storytellers and professionals who are involved in this important episode of the culture. This research revealed the expanded notion of proverb in the cultural tissue

Abstract:
Slavery is something that cannot be taken lightly. Even Butler says no matter how harsh the slavery in her novel is, it does not compare to how gruesome actual slavery was: “As a matter of fact, one of the things I realized when I was reading the slave narrative…was that I was not going to be able to come anywhere near presenting slavery as it was. I was going to have to do a some-what cleaned-up version of slavery, or no one would be willing to read it” (qtd. in Kenan 497). Octavia Butler knew that if she presented slavery directly and in a way that called people, most likely white males, that there would not be an audience for the novel. Instead she had to present slavery as something society shaped, rather than a specific group of individuals. An analysis of Octavia Butler’s Kindred reveals that societal expectations alter the dynamics of such interracial relationships as those between Dana and Kevin, Dana and Rufus, and Rufus and Alice, determining their success or failure without regard to the foundations upon which these relationships were initially built.

Abstract:
Divided into two parts, this dissertation aims to be a reflection on the creative process in visual arts, based on the testimony of the creator/artist. The image of the Virgin Mary as a source of plastic work and theoretical research is seen here from the perspective of miscegenation in the search for understanding the source imagery. The first part, "Birth of the Virgin Mary" is the establishment of the work process and construction of the Virgin Mary and, of personal memory as the trigger that motivated the development of the works. The second part, "Memory of the Virgin Mary" meets the concept of mestizaje, and lies in the use of the Virgin Mary as the appearance of erratic memory that constantly is regarded to the social. There is a meeting of mestizo ways of doing works that is always immersed in an "intertwining" of countless possible interpretations.

This work aims investigate some trainers elements of a peculiar identity project of the Spanish-American, present in the Cuban José Julián Martí y Perez (1853-1895), great intellectual and also political leader of the nineteenth century, to identify echoes present in Martí concepts that dialogue with the area of post-colonial studies. The assumptions of Martí identity project were linked mainly in their quest for political independence of Cuba, his homeland, and also for cultural emancipation of which he called Nuestra America , to the detriment of imported cultural practices in Europe or the United States . Martí such assumptions are also present in the reviews made by postcolonial theorysts, especially with the cultural imitation of Latin American post- colonialism, but mostly post- colonial theory of Indian mother, especially the concepts developed by the Indian theorist Homi K. Bhabha.
Abstract:
In this historical research about the emancipation of slaves in the East Dominican, we attempted to identify the nature and the social force of this legal practice, which has allowed us, at least we hope, to reach a broad understanding on slavery not only in the eastern Dominican between the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, but also in the entire Spanish Latin-American colonial empire. We started with the premise that we are facing a total social phenomenon as established by Mauss and Gurvitch. With this method, we could see the causes and effects of social emancipation in the broadest sense, as the reaction of public opinion, the adaptation of morals, economic impacts, effectiveness and ineffectiveness of laws, etc. In this sense, the study of legal documents has raised important because of their role in the structuring of society. Through social factors involved in them in the process of emancipation, we tried to locate in the documents, the circumstances that produced them. For example, for an emancipation, act by excellence individual in the colonial regime, we asked what was the social class in which belonged the master? What was the economic situation? Etc. That is why we have tried to explore this phenomenon from a historical point of view to understand the dominant models postage (free or paid, put or without conditions) as well as the demographic profile of freedmen (gender, origin, age, etc.). The manumissions are legal documents of a special nature in the directory of judicial decisions. Their analysis is likely to be quantified, but it is clear that the manumissions analyzed do not represent an exhaustive series because they are only traces of a phenomenon that we do not have the exact size. However, beyond the multiplicity of cases analyzed, what matters most are the details they offer us. Thus, this thesis presents a historical-legal study of manumissions in the eastern Dominican Republic in the late seventeenth century until the abolition of slavery

The use of art as a communication tool is a new strategy used by corporations to affect their employees in their cognitive aspects and their interactions with the collective. The goal is to improve internal communication in order to develop new ideas and solutions for unpredictable problems that interfere with the linear planning of a business organization. The objective of this research was to investigate some corporations that included the intervention of artistic doing in their organizational disciplines, in which the employee is the main character of the experience. In order to contextualize the object of this research we worked with theoreticians of Latin-American culture (Néstor García Canclini and Severo Sarduy), miscegenation (Amálio Pinheiro), knowledge and communication sociology (Boaventura de Souza Santos, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, and Jesús Martín-Barbero), art (Marilena Chauí and Jorge Coli) and administration (Marlene Marchiori, Antonio Cesar Amaru Maximiano and Gareth Morgan), reaching the current days with Maurizio Lazzarato. Using a specially prepared questionnaire for this work, an exploratory field research was carried out in three major companies. We considered the possibility of existence of other policies aiming the organizational structure of a company, from the corporative communication point of view, by means of using the artistic language. The presence of art in a corporative environment seems to be a paradox since the arts belong to subjective fields that are open and unrestricted and the corporate structures belong to a rigid way of thinking. It was possible to observe in our exploratory research that corporations which are receptive to the artistic doing improve working environment in aspects such as communication and sociability. We also observed that the artistic doing is easily incorporated due to our cultural miscegenation, which makes us a fast moving society. However, it was impossible to measure its reach, since art overruns any attempt of a rational approach to its results and because the reach of art is vast, once it is polissemic

The research want to examine some artistic and journalistic trials of Antonio Juraci Smith, artist "marginal" Para over eighty publications. His empirical corpus shall emphasize twine, "Irmã Serafina Cinque: O Anjo da Transamazônica"; "Os Novos Versos Sacânicos" and "O Chapéu do Boto" as well as some short stories, essays and poems in newspapers memories, magazines and poetic anthologies. In his time delimitation, the research will follow the storyline of the artist narrated by print, by the poet himself and voices witnessing this trajectory. From these considerations, the extent to which cultural shifts in Amazons Juraci would "geometricable" and / or neo-baroque features? In the search for answers to the problems, the main hypothesis assumes that, when suturing multiple worldly voices to their Arts, Juraci now relies intercultural narrative tissues, sometimes edge scriptures "necrotic" by centripetal folklore. By the need to test, question and investigate (s) object (s) proposed (s), the following methodological assumptions considering conducting an ethnographic and cartographic were chosen: survey, the municipal public file of Bethlehem, newspapers, magazines and anthologies accepting information about the artist and his works; consulting the staff of the poet file; interviews with Juraci, researchers, craftsmen Pará; participant observation in cultural events in the streets, squares, markets, cemeteries and theaters, and "mining" of research in the light of Communication Theory in Latin America (Martin-Barbero), the Russian Cultural Semiotics (Lótman, Bakhtin), Baroque and miscegenation (Severo Sarduy, Haroldo de Campos, Lezama Lima, Alejo Carpentier, Jerusa Pires Ferreira and Amalio Pinheiro). Subsequently, the holdings of such information, the following analytical and empirical categories were extracted: the academic myopia marquetries Antonio Juraci; the joints micro-macro in Amazonian spacetimes these textures; rearticulations its cultural series using "satanic" representations, and the applicants becomings translation of the symbiotic interaction between Amazon men, animals, nature and culture. To settle the questions raised, it is expected, as of transcriadores voices of an unusual daily life, restore, in multiple forms, provisional and open to contributions, these social maps historically ignored, but full directions

Abstract:
This research analysis the roll of the Brazilian Japanese descendant from the perspective of an artist of the body, with the scenic arts of the city of São Paulo as context: a Brazilian reality of immigration and diaspora, in a practicaltheoretical bias. Our start points are the processes of contamina-tion between West and East, represented here by Brazil and Japan, respectively, and the singular experiences that result from this relation, which are represented by the conversation with six Brazilian nikkei artists. We are considering the Miscegenation (mestiçagem) (PINHEIRO, 2013; LAPLANTINE & NOUSS, 2016; GRUZINSKI, 2001) that occurs from this rendez-vous, using terms from the Japanese culture, inclusive, Ma (?) and D? (?), properly displaced from its meaning and resignified in the context that we mentioned before. The Corpomídia Theory from Greiner and Katz (2001) is important for the comprehension of the co-relation and co-evolution of body and environment which is mutual and non-stagnant. The studies of Hashiguti (2008) and Takeuchi (2016) that reflect specifi-cally the Japanese descendant body also compose the theorical refer-ences of this study.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a socio-historic anthropology of the worship of two saints not recognized by the Church, Gaucho Gil and San la Muerte, in the province of Corrientes, in the North-East of Argentina. It aims at analyzing the genesis of these phenomena and at defining the contribution of popular religion in the construction of collective identities. It means to question the political dimension and the historicity of these symbolic and ritual systems by specifying the links they maintain with the guarani culture and with the resistance to a situation of social oppression. The study begins with a socio-historic exploration of the constitution of Argentina inland populations in order to understand to what extent these cults were born in a context of social and cultural contempt and denial of memory which has categorized the rural popular classes as subordinate and invisible. Secondly, the making of the legends, images and ritual practices related to gaucho Gil and San la Muerte are explained both through historic anthropology and a local ethnographical analysis. Finally, this contextualized exploration leads to consider these worships no longer as simple means of resistance to an established order or as distorted reproductions of the Catholic religion, but as autonomous cultural creations which belong to a new and mixed people, producing a memory and symbols which accurately represent the experience of their condition

This paper investigates the possibility of the author design is a collective act and an opportunity for creative actions in colaborativity. There is interest in the relationship between design, art and crafts combined with the strategic design perspective, since we visualize characteristics consistent with theoretical constructs force in this academic field. Furthermore, we are interested in, as indicated in the question problem of this work: the creative process, as shown in the work of Tina and Lui and Rodrigo Almeida, may indicate methodological ways to promote projective practices in collaboration between designers and craftsmen? Outlining how is this creative process well demarcated by the Brazilian culture. An exploratory survey was conducted among copyright designers recognized in the market and the academic world. For individual case analysis, it was consulted database study. Data were analyzed and compared (triangulation). For the case studies was prepared a report on the structure defined previously and the development of a results framework, as well as a proposed concept of authorial design, since there is a theoretical gap on this domain. As a result we point the antagonistic basis of design for optical marketing imposes contests aesthetics founded by functionality and linear patterns of production and the multicultural and multiracial authorial aspect that indicates a breather, greater openness to interpretation of its temporality and locality, close to the art enables both social and cultural innovation, as the most convincing way to turn something is to know it in depth. There was evidence that the abstention of the rigid formality of the projects and product development enables the "playful" which is an important generator of new meanings and values. Consequently, we believe that this research has helped to illustrate some aspects of the relationship between copyright and design strategic design that even covers that pointlessly, Brazilian culture, territory and miscegenation, however aware that there is much to explore in these professional fields in order to further enrich these search scenarios.
