Abstract:
Sulfoxaflor belongs to a new class of insecticides which are effective against many sap-feeding pests. Sitobion miscanthi, Rhopalosiphum padi, and Metopolophium dirhodum are the predominant pests coexisting on wheat plants. It is unknown whether these aphid species have developed resistance to sulfoxaflor. Here, the susceptibilities of three wheat aphid species from different regions of China to sulfoxaflor were evaluated. The results showed that two S. miscanthi, one R. padi, and two M. dirhodum field populations were highly resistant to sulfoxaflor. Additionally, 13 S. miscanthi, 9 R. padi, and 4 M. dirhodum field populations were moderately resistant to sulfoxaflor. Analysis of differences in toxicity showed that the susceptibility levels of R. padi in 9 of 20 regions, M. dirhodum in 5 of 9 regions, and M. dirhodum in 3 of 9 regions to sulfoxaflor were greater than those of S. miscanthi, S. miscanthi, and R. padi in the same regions, respectively. Thus, each wheat aphid species has field populations that are highly sulfoxaflor resistant. The R. padi and M. dirhodum populations were more susceptible to sulfoxaflor than those of S. miscanthi. These findings provide new insights into insecticide resistance development and rational sulfoxaflor use.

Abstract:
Aphid salivary effectors play important roles in modulating plant defense responses. The grain aphid Sitobion miscanthi is one of the most economically important cereal aphids worldwide. However, little information is available on the identification and functional analysis of salivary effectors of S. miscanthi. In this study, a candidate salivary effector Sm9723 was identified, which was specifically expressed in aphid salivary glands and highly induced during the aphid feeding phase. Transient overexpression of Sm9723 in Nicotiana benthamiana suppressed BAX and INF1-induced cell death. Further, Sm9723 overexpression inhibited N. benthamiana defense responses by reducing pattern-triggered immunity associated callose deposition and expression levels of jasmonic and salicylic acid-associated defense genes. In addition, the salivary effector Sm9723 of S. miscanthi was effectively silenced through nanocarrier-mediated dsRNA delivery system. After silencing Sm9723, fecundity and survival of S. miscanthi decreased significantly, and the aphid feeding behavior was also negatively affected. These results suggest salivary effector Sm9723 is involved in suppressing plant immunity and is essential in enabling aphid virulence, which could be applied as potential target gene for RNAi-mediated pest control of S. miscanthi.

Abstract:
The grain aphid, Sitobion miscanthi causes serious damage by removing nutritional content from wheat plants and transmitting viral diseases. The use of resistant wheat cultivars is an effective method of aphid management. To identify S. miscanthi resistant cultivars, preliminary antixenosis resistance screening was conducted on 112 Ethiopian and 21 Chinese wheat accessions and varieties along with bioassay to test for further antixenosis resistance, identification of aphid feeding behavior using electrical penetration graph (EPG), and imaging of leaf trichome densities using a 3D microscope. According to antixenosis resistance screening, one highly-resistant, 25 moderately-resistant, and 38 slightly-resistant wheat cultivars to S. miscanthi were identified. Aphid choice tests showed that Luxuan266, 243726, and 213312 were the least preferred after 12, 24, 48, and 72 h of S. miscanthi release. Longer duration of Np, longer time to first probe, and shorter duration of E2 waveforms were recorded in Lunxuan266, 243726, and 213312 than in Beijing 837. The trichome density on adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces of Lunxuan266, 243726 and 213312 was significantly higher than on those of Beijing 837. We concluded that Lunxuan266, 243726, and 213312 were antixenosis resistant to S. miscanthi based on the choice test, EPG results, and leaf trichome densities.

Abstract:
How the non-consumptive effects (NCEs) of predators influence the development, survival, fecundity, and population growth of prey has not been well documented, which is the primary consideration for the compatibility of prey with its natural enemies in agricultural ecosystems. We herein employed the age-stage, two-sex life table to examine the NCEs of the predator Coccinella septempunctata on the life-history traits and population growth of prey Sitobion miscanthi via caged predator (prey co-existing with caged predator) and caged prey (predator co-existing with caged prey) treatments with daily different exposure times (i.e., 0 h (control), 12 h, and 24 h). The results indicated that the predation risk of a caged predator could reduce the first nymphal duration and net reproductive rate (R0) of S. miscanthi at 12 h, and the first nymphal duration, preadult duration, and mean generation time (T) at 24 h. However, the predation risk of the caged prey resulted in the prolongation of the pre-adult development time and total pre-reproductive period (TPRP) as well as lowered the intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (𝜆), R0, life expectancy, and reproductive value of S. miscanthi after both 12 h and 24 h. Furthermore, the predation risk of both the caged predator and caged prey could increase the percent of winged morph at 24 h. These findings indicate that S. miscanthi could respond to the predation risk of the caged predator by either accelerating the developmental rate or reducing the net reproductive rate, while S. miscanthi might reduce their fitness in response to the predation risk of caged prey. Furthermore, S. miscanthi might also alter to winged morphs for dispersal under both of the above treatments. The findings obtained have practical ramifications for managing this economically important pest in wheat production with reduced insecticide applications.

Abstract:
We provided a new diagnosis of the genus Stigmaeopsis. Then we described two new species that are very closely related to Stigmaeopsis miscanthi (Saito) from Miscanthus spp. in Japan and China. The Japanese species, named Stigmaeopsis sabelisi Saito and Sato n. sp., was previously referred to as Stigmaeopsis miscanthi low aggressiveness form , and is characterized by its low male-to-male aggression behavior. The other species, Stigmaeopsis continentalis Saito and Lin n. sp., was found in China (Fujian district). Thus four species could be discriminated from the species inhabiting Miscanthus and reed grasses. However, the two new species and S. miscanthi resemble each other very closely, thus they are considered to be sibling species. To identify them several naive characters, geographic distribution and genetic data are needed. An updated key to all known species of Stigmaeopsis is also proposed.

Abstract:
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based remote sensing platform was used for high-throughput phenotyping (HTP) of hemp and miscanthus traits. UAV remote sensing, through the acquisition of multispectral images and the calculation of different vegetation indices, is able to estimate the crop traits. In this thesis, the crop traits estimated were leaf area index and leaf chlorophyll content for hemp, while light interception, plant height, green leaf biomass, standing biomass, and moisture content for miscanthus. The estimation of the traits was carried out using machine learning algorithms and the inversion of the PROSAIL model. The HTP of hemp and miscanthus was carried out by applying the generalized additive model (GAM) to the time series of traits values estimated from UAV flights. UAV remote sensing enabled to analyse of the traits' dynamics during the growing season. Combining estimation models and GAM modelling applied to time series of crop trait values estimated from multiple multispectral images of UAV flights proved to be a powerful tool for HTP.

Abstract:
In the last years there has been a growing interest in energy biomass crops especially in the industrialized countries, in relationship to the pressing demands to exploit new energetic sources. The new technologies that can make fuel from lignocellulosic biomass, open up interesting prospects for some species that have proved particularly promising for the characteristics of perenniality and productivity: Arundo donax, Cynara cardunculus Miscantus spp and even if they have, however, still points weakness related to propagation techniques, harvesting and storage, the availability of genotypes and mechanization. At the end of the introduction of energy crops in the Mediterranean area have been taken to poliennal three species. Specifically, for the Arundo donax and miscantus studies have been conducted on the response to irrigation and nitrogen fertilization, while for the cardoon, autumn winter crop, were evaluated different genotypes. The species reached the highest dry biomass production of the third year of planting. The Arundo has provided the highest dry biomass production of about 26 t ha-1, Miscanthus production reached approximately 20 t ha-1; the Miscantus species is no longer produced from V years due to the lack of irrigation and fertilization. Nitrogen fertilization did not affect the production behavior of the species in the study, while the reduced irrigation administration in reduced yields, with effects more pronounced in the miscanthus. The genotypes of Cynara cardunculus showed a great variability; S16 (20 t ha-1) and C5 (16 t ha-1) were more genotypes productive. Important informations was obtained on the potential in bioethanol production that reached 3000 liters ha-1 in arundo.

Abstract:
Aided by American antiquarians, the Royal Society of Northern Antiquities of Denmark produced Antiquitates Americanae (1837) which argued Vinland of the Norse sagas was in southern New England. Editor Carl Christian Rafn published a borderline fraudulent interpretation of Dighton Rock that turned it into a Viking inscription. A colonial windmill in Newport, Rhode Island was misinterpreted as the ruin of a Christian Norse church. An Indigenous burial near Dighton Rock at Fall River was miscast as Norse or Phoenician and immortalized by Henry Longfellow in “The Skeleton in Armor.” This chapter argues Antitquiates Americanae and the RSNA’s Mémoires represented an elaborate exercise in transatlantic Gothicism. White Tribism also factored in Rafn’s analysis, as he made Norsemen the improvers of ancestral Native Americans.

Abstract:
Abstract Oscar Levant claimed that Hollywood miscast him as himself. The joke speaks to how closely intertwined failure, achievement, and identity were interwoven for Levant, whose many occupations (pianist, composer, actor, and comic writer) reflected both the opportunities and liabilities of such multifaceted talent. But unlike other secondary characters, Levant brought with him a crossover star persona that served as foil and ballast for the marquee stars he supported. This chapter argues that while Levant’s performances of himself changed only slightly, the shifting emphasis he received across these films through musical performances presented competing solutions to the problem that Levant’s characters posed. How does a cynical, marginalized pianist “play” in the earnest, optimistic genre of the Hollywood film musical, where singing and dancing drive the entertainment? This chapter addresses this question by setting analysis of his onscreen roles within the context of his broader celebrity. Levant’s work as a concert artist and writer, his close relationship with the Gershwins, and his struggles with mental health informed his onscreen roles and characterized the peculiar authenticity that Levant’s characters embodied within the film musical.

Abstract:
In the world, fossil fuel resources are constantly decreasing and increasing energy use. This leads to wider use of biomass in various industrial areas. Also, for the production of heat and electricity. Depending on the situation of current market, much attention is being paid to increasing the potential of biomass and to ensure the needs of users. Recently, much attention is paid to non-food energy plants, which could be used in thermochemical conversion technologies. These plants must be well adapted to climatic conditions, to grow a high biomass yield, to possess high energy value, easy to use for biofuel production and low environmental impact. Having a high energy potential and promising plants for cultivation in a changing climate conditions can be characterized and these plants: this is Miscantus spp. (namely miscanthus), Artemisia dubia Wall. (mugwort) and Cannabis sativa L. (fiber hemp). The article summarizes long-standing biometric and thermal performance results on Miscantus spp. (namely miscanthus), Artemisia dubia Wall. (mugwort) and Cannabis sativa L. (fiber hemp). In Lithuania climate condition, it is possible to grow from 3.26 to 17.06 t ha-1 of dry biomass per year from the mentioned plants. The calorific value of biomass has a huge influence on assessment of energy potential from plants. After combustion of 1 kilogram of Miscantus spp., Artemisia dubia Wall. and Cannabis sativa L. biomass it stands out on average 18.3±0.06, 18.5±0.66 and 17.43±0.06 MJ of heat, respectively. An equally important property which assesses the suitability of biomass for biofuels is ash content. The average ash content of biomass from Miscantus spp. and Artemisia dubia Wall was 1.51±0.03 % and 2.69±0.33 %, i.e. 2.22 times and 1.25 times lower than Cannabis sativa L.

Abstract:
Abstract The need for creating new manufacturing methods for sustainability is apparent given the harmful environmental effects of perpetual mining of raw materials. There are two common themes that dominate the work on sustainable design and manufacturing. One is using checklists during design to ensure reusability in the future by designing products with sustainability built into its life cycle. The other is developing design guidelines for designers to follow. The aim of this study was to explore a novel method of sustainable design through compositional manufacturing which enables resynthesizing nonfunctional pieces of scrap or waste material into functioning products. We conducted an exploratory case study with casting, where risers, gates, and miscast parts were resynthesized in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way than remelting them. To do this, parts with arbitrary functions were created using various geometric properties taken from a selection of scrap parts. Based on initial observations, we identified few heuristics. One of the main discoveries was that groups of scrap parts with greater geometric differences resulted in final parts with more varied functions. The data gleaned from more targeted implementations of this process are required to create a more robust understanding of how effectively scrap parts can be utilized and how sustainable this process is compared to other design for sustainability methods.
