Abstract:

A PCR procedure based on the intergenic region (IR) separating two genes encoding a recently identified mycobacterial two-component system, named SenX3-RegX3, was developed and was shown to be suitable for identifying Mycobacterium bovis BCG. ThesenX3-regX3 IR contains a novel type of repetitive sequence, called mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units (MIRUs). All tested BCG strains exclusively contained 77-bp MIRUs within the senX3-regX3 IR, whereas all non-BCGM. tuberculosis complex strains contained a 53-bp MIRU, in addition to the 77-bp MIRUs. All 148 strains analyzed so far could be divided into eight different groups according to the copy numbers of the 77-bp MIRU and to the presence or absence of the 53-bp MIRU. BCG strains contained either one, two, or three 77-bp MIRUs. The other strains contained one to five 77-bp MIRUs invariably followed by a 53-bp MIRU. The consistent absence of the 53-bp MIRU in BCG strains and its presence in virulent strains allowed us to develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using specific capture oligonucleotide probes to distinguish between BCG and other M. tuberculosis complex strains.

Abstract:

Using 243 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates obtained in 2001 in Osaka City, Japan, the discriminatory power of variable numbers of tandem repeats (VNTRs) of 12 standard mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units (MIRUs) was assessed. The biggest cluster defined by MIRU-VNTRs consisted of 57 (23.5 %) isolates and they belonged to the Beijing family based on spoligotyping. When additional VNTR loci were included in the MIRU-VNTR analysis, the 57 originally clustered strains were further differentiated by the addition of Queen's University Belfast (QUB)-VNTRs, but not exact tandem repeat-VNTR. The allelic diversity of additional VNTR loci such as VNTR 3232 (QUB-3232), VNTR 2163a (QUB-11a), VNTR 2163b (QUB-11b) and VNTR 1982 (QUB-18) was high in the 57 strains. When the 243 M. tuberculosis isolates were analysed using 16-locus VNTR (the 12 standard MIRUs and the 4 QUB loci) and IS6110 RFLP, the respective Hunter–Gaston discriminatory indexes were 0.9966 and 0.9971. The discrimination power of 16-locus VNTR was equal to that of IS6110 RFLP analysis. If appropriate loci are added to the standard MIRU analysis, VNTR genotyping could be a valuable tool for strain typing and epidemiological research of M. tuberculosis in Japan.

Abstract:

The successful use of DNA amplification for the detection of tuberculous mycobacteria crucially depends on the choice of the target sequence, which ideally should be present in all tuberculous mycobacteria and absent from all other bacteria. In the present study we developed a PCR procedure based on the intergenic region (IR) separating two genes encoding a recently identified mycobacterial two-component system named SenX3-RegX3. The senX3-regX3 IR is composed of a novel type of repetitive sequence, called mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units (MIRUs). In a survey of 116Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains characterized by different IS6110 restriction fragment length polymorphisms, 2 Mycobacterium africanum strains, 3 Mycobacterium bovis strains (including 2 BCG strains), and 1Mycobacterium microti strain, a specific PCR fragment was amplified in all cases. This collection included M. tuberculosis strains that lack IS6110 ormtp40, two target sequences that have previously been used for the detection of M. tuberculosis. No PCR fragment was amplified when DNA from other organisms was used, giving a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 100% in the confidence limit of this study. The numbers of MIRUs were found to vary among strains, resulting in six different groups of strains on the basis of the size of the amplified PCR fragment. However, the vast majority of the strains (approximately 90%) fell within the same group, containing two 77-bp MIRUs followed by one 53-bp MIRU.

Abstract:

The thelytokous egg parasitoid Ooencyrtus mirus Triapitsyn and Power (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was recovered from brassica plant debris in Pakistan in an effort to find a biological control agent of the invasive bug Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in North America. As the first step in determining the overall host range of this parasitoid, adult females were exposed to the eggs of eight alternate pentatomid host species, two non-pentatomid heteropterans, and two lepidopterans, in choice and no-choice tests. Although O. mirus was more successful on B. hilaris than the other species in terms of the number of the eggs laid, the number of emerged progeny, and the developmental time of the progeny, it was able to reproduce on all of the alternate hosts except for one of the lepidopterans, whose eggs appeared too small for this parasitoid. The results show O. mirus to be a generalist parasitoid species with a preference for B. hilaris. The results also indicate that there is a linear relationship between the mean body length of O. mirus females and the mean host egg weight with an adjusted R 2 of 0.90. The implications of this study on the release of O. mirus for the control of B. hilaris are discussed.

Abstract:

The highly successful pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) has evolved strategies to adapt to various stress conditions, thus promoting survival within the infected host. The two-component regulatory system (2CRS) senX3-regX3, which has been implicated in the Mtb response to inorganic phosphate depletion, is believed to behave as an auto-regulatory bicistronic operon. Unlike other 2CRS, Mtb senX3-regX3 features an intergenic region (IR) containing several mycobacterium interspersed repetitive units (MIRU) of unknown function. In this study, we used a lacZ reporter system to study the promoter activity of the 5′ untranslated region of senX3, and that of various numbers of MIRUs in the senX3-regX3 IR, during axenic Mtb growth in nutrient-rich broth, and upon exposure to growth-restricting conditions. Activity of the senX3 promoter was induced during phosphate depletion and nutrient starvation, and IR promoter activity under these conditions was directly proportional to the number of MIRUs present. Quantitative reverse transcriptase (qRT)-PCR analysis of exponentially growing Mtb revealed monocistronic transcription of senX3 and regX3, and, to a lesser degree, bicistronic transcription of the operon. In addition, we observed primarily monocistronic upregulation of regX3 during phosphate depletion of Mtb, which was confirmed by Northern analysis in wild-type Mtb and by RT-PCR in a senX3-disrupted mutant, while upregulation of regX3 in nutrient-starved Mtb was chiefly bicistronic. Our findings of differential regulation of senX3-regX3 highlight the potential regulatory role of MIRUs in the Mtb genome and provide insight into the regulatory mechanisms underlying Mtb adaptation to physiologically relevant conditions.

Abstract:

The True’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon mirus, True 1913) is a poorly known member of the Ziphiidae family. Its distribution in the northern hemisphere is thought to be restricted to the temperate or warm temperate waters of the North Atlantic, while a few stranding records from the southern hemisphere suggest a wider and antitropical distribution, extending to waters from the Atlantic coast of Brazil to South Africa, Mozambique, Australia and the Tasman Sea coast of New Zealand. This paper (i) reports the first molecular confirmation of the occurrence of the True’s beaked whale at the southern limit of its distribution recorded in the northeast Atlantic: the Azores and Canary Islands (macaronesian ecoregion); (ii) describes a new colouration for this species using evidence from a whale with molecular species confirmation; and (iii) contributes to the sparse worldwide database of live sightings, including the first underwater video recording of this species and close images of a calf. Species identification was confirmed in two cases using mitochondrial DNA control region and cytochromebgene markers: a subadult male True’s beaked whale that stranded in El Hierro, Canary Islands, in November 2012, and a subadult male found floating dead near Faial, the Azores, in July 2004. The whale that stranded in the Canary Islands had a clearly delimited white area on its head, extending posteriorly from the tip of the beak to cover the blowhole dorsally and the gular grooves ventrally. This colouration contrasts with previous descriptions for the species and it may be rare, but it exemplifies the variability of the colouration of True’s beaked whales in the North Atlantic, further confirmed here by live sightings data. The recording of several observations of this species in deep but relatively coastal waters off the Azores and the Canary Islands suggests that these archipelagos may be unique locations to study the behaviour of the enigmatic True’s beaked whale.

We here describe Merothrips meridionalis sp.n. based on specimens originally treated by J.D. Hood as an apterous form of M. mirus. The available data on the distribution of this new species suggest that it is widespread through Brazil, living in sympatry with M. floridensis, M. mirus and M. tympanis. However, the distribution of this new species is possibly further south than other Merothripidae species recorded from South America.

Australodelphis mirus (Delphinidae n. gen., n. sp) is a small extinct Early Pliocene dolphin known from five individuals from shallow-water strata of the Sørsdal Formation, Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica. Australodelphis mirus is the first higher vertebrate named from the Oligocene-Pleistocene interval on land in Antarctica, and is the first cetacean fossil from the polar margin of circum-Antarctic Southern Ocean that postdates the break-up of Gondwana. The dolphin is convergent in skull form with some living beaked whales (Mesoplodon spp.; Family Ziphiidae) in its long, narrow and toothless upper jaw and face, but skull suture patterns, basicranial sinuses, and ear-bones indicate close relationship with living long-beaked dolphins (Delphinidae). Australodelphis mirus perhaps was a suction-feeding squid-eater which occupied quiet near-shore shelf waters influenced by glaciers but probably lacking major sea-ice. Possible ecological equivalents of A. mirus (small ziphiids, long-beaked dolphins) do not occupy Antarctic waters today, perhaps excluded by cold conditions and/or sea-ice cover. Earlier Pliocene cetaceans worldwide reveal significant extinct and sometimes bizarre taxa, and extant families with ranges quite different from today, pointing to climate-related changes in cetacean ecology in the last 2–3 million years.

Abstract:

Abstract Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) is an invasive pest of cole crops in the southwestern United States. To find potential biocontrol agents of B. hilaris, three egg parasitoids were imported from Pakistan, including Ooencyrtus mirus, a recently described uniparental species. We investigated the effect of temperature on survival and developmental rate in O. mirus from egg to adult. At 14 and 16°C, no adults emerged unless the immatures were transferred later to a warmer temperature. At constant 18°C, a low percentage emerged, but again more emerged if the immatures were transferred to a warmer temperature. Survival ranged from 80 to 96% at 20–37°C and did not differ significantly among these temperatures. No adults emerged at 38°C. Regardless of the amount of time the parasitized eggs were held at 14 and 16°C, the developmental times after returning the eggs to 26°C were similar, suggesting a quiescence process rather than simply slow development. At higher temperatures, the developmental rate increased linearly from 18 to 36°C and then declined at 37°C. The Wang model provided the best fit of the data and estimated a lower developmental threshold at 13.0°C, an optimal temperature at 35.6°C, and an upper developmental threshold of 38.3°C. The thermal constant for total immature development is 168.4 degree-days. The results show 36°C to be the best temperature for rearing O. mirus, and that O. mirus-parasitized eggs can be stored at 14°C for months without losing viability. These are crucial data to consider when mass rearing this biological control agent.

Abstract:

We describe a new frog species of the Spinomantis bertini species complex based on congruent genetic evidence from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences as well as minor morphological differences. A molecular phylogeny derived from the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene revealed that Spinomantis mirus sp. nov. is sister to a clade containing the other two described species of the species complex, S. bertini and S. beckei, but strongly differentiated from these two species by 8.1–9.8% pairwise distances in this gene. DNA sequences from two nuclear genes revealed that S. mirus sp. nov. shares no alleles with these two species. Phenotypically, S. mirus sp. nov. differs from the other species of the complex by its larger size and some aspects of its coloration, including clear mottling on the flanks, tri-color banding on the legs, and distinct brown dots on the dorsum. The new species is so far only known from Pic d’Ivohibe Special Reserve. Its distribution thus appears to not overlap with those of the other two species, which as far as known are restricted to the Andohahela Massif in the extreme South-East of Madagascar, at a distance of about 250 km from Ivohibe.

Abstract:

Mesoplodont beaked whales are one of the most enigmatic mammalian genera. We document a pod of four beaked whales in the Bay of Biscay breaching and tail slapping alongside a large passenger ferry. Photographs of the animals were independently reviewed by experts, and identified as True’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon mirus). This is the first conclusive live sighting of these animals in the north-east Atlantic, and adds information to previous sightings that are likely to have been M. mirus. Photographs of an adult male appears to show two supernumerary teeth posterior to the apical mandibular tusks. Whilst analysed museum specimens (n = 8) did not show evidence of alveoli in this location, there is evidence of vestigial teeth and variable dentition in many beaked whale species. This is the first such record of supernumerary teeth in True’s beaked whales.

Abstract:

Several types of salsify or goat's-beard, Tragopogon species (Asteraceae), are found in Canada as biennial or monocarpic perennial herbs with yellow or purple flowers. Introduced from Eurasia, T. pratensis and T. dubius have become established in all provinces in Canada except Newfoundland and the territories. Tragopogon porrifolius tends to be more local, but is also found in southern areas of most provinces. Tragopogon species hybridize readily, and the tetraploid species T. mirus and T. miscellus have resulted from crosses among the three diploid Tragopogon species in North America. Salsify species produce relatively large umbrella-like pappuses which promote long-distance dispersal. These species also invade rangeland, and are considered noxious weeds in some parts of Canada. Abstract The invasive stink bug, Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is a serious pest of cole crops. Studies are underway to assess the potential of an exotic egg parasitoid from Pakistan, Ooencyrtus mirus Triapitsyn & Power (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), as a biological control agent for this pest. In the present study, the ovipositional preference of O. mirus reared for multiple generations on B. hilaris, Thyanta pallidovirens (Stal), or Nezara viridula (Linnaeus) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) for eggs of these three stink bug species was evaluated. The first host accepted for oviposition, the number of parasitoid eggs (as indicated by pedicels) laid on each host egg at different time intervals, and the number of wasps that emerged from parasitized eggs were recorded. Results show that O. mirus prefers eggs of its primary host, B. hilaris, for oviposition over the alternate hosts tested regardless of whether the parasitoids were reared on the primary or alternate hosts. The percent parasitism in the first 2 h of exposure also was higher on B. hilaris eggs although it was not significantly different from T. pallidovirens eggs for parasitoids reared on B. hilaris and N. viridula eggs. For all parasitoid populations, the mean number of emerged wasps per host egg ranged from 0.9 to 1.1 with no significant differences. Bagrada hilaris eggs were significantly smaller than T. pallidovirens and N. viridula eggs and female wasps that emerged from B. hilaris eggs had significantly shorter body length and head width than those that emerged from T. pallidovirens and N. viridula eggs.

In support of a biological control program in California, USA, against the bagrada bug, Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae), an invasive pest of Asian origin, colonies of two species of Ooencyrtus Ashmead (Hymenoptera, Encyrtidae) are maintained using B. hilaris eggs as host. One of them, Ooencyrtus mirus Triapitsyn & Power, sp. nov., is of Pakistani origin. It displays natural preference for bagrada bug eggs and is being evaluated in quarantine as a candidate for classical biological control. The other, Ooencyrtus lucidus Triapitsyn & Ganjisaffar, sp. nov., appears to be native to California, and we believe it switched to B. hilaris from native pentatomid hosts. Both new species are described and illustrated, as is the Old World species Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev), for which a neotype is designated. The presented morphometric evidence as well as mitochondrial and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence data separate Ooencyrtus mirus from O. telenomicida. A lectotype is designated for Ooencyrtus californicus Girault from California, which is morphologically similar to O. lucidus.

Abstract:

An obviously unhealthy plant identified as Tragopogon mirus Ownbey (remarkable goatsbeard) was sent for diagnosis to the Division of Plant Industry (DPI), Gainesville, FL in May of 2008. T. mirus is a recently formed allotetraploid that has T. dubius Scop. and T. porrifolius L. (goatsbeard or salsify) as parents. The parents (family Asteraceae) are diploid and originate from Eurasia. They were introduced to the northwest United States in the early 1900s. The allotetraploid T. mirus, which does not occur in Eurasia, was discovered in 1949 and named in 1950. It has been found in the northwest states of Washington and Idaho. It has also been found in Arizona (4). The plant sent to the DPI was grown in a greenhouse for research purposes at the Botany Department of the University of Florida (Alachua County). Symptoms exhibited on the leaves included mottling, chlorotic and necrotic spots, and mild distortion. Epidermal leaf strips from a mottled leaf were stained with the Orange-Green protein stain and Azure A nucleic acid stain (1). With a light microscope, granular inclusions typical for Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) (1) were seen in leaf strips from both stains. The remainder of the leaf was ground in buffer and tested serologically for TSWV by TSWV-specific ImmunoStrips (Agdia, Elkhart, IN). The ImmunoStrip was positive for the presence of TSWV. This test was confirmed by double-antibody sandwich-ELISA using antiserum and conjugate for TSWV (Agdia). Further serological testing of other Tragopogon species with similar symptoms growing in the same greenhouse revealed that T. miscellus (another recently formed allotetraploid found in the northwestern United States; parents T. dubius and T. pratensis), T. dubius, T. porrifolius, and T. pratensis were also infected with TSWV. Total RNA was extracted from symptomatic leaves of T. mirus, T. dubius, T. porrifolius, and T. miscellus. Reverse transcription-PCR was performed with universal tospovirus primers BR60 and BR65 that amplify part of the nucleocapsid protein gene (2). Target amplicons of 454 bp were produced for all four samples. The PCR product from T. porrifolius was cloned and sequenced. The resulting sequence (GenBank Accession No. FJ655913) shows high homology, 98%, to several isolates of the Tomato spotted wilt virus deposited in the GenBank (Accession Nos. AY870391, AY744477, and AF020659). T. porrifolius has been reported to be naturally infected with TSWV in Italy (3); however, to our knowledge, this is the first report of this virus in the allotetraploids T. mirus and T. miscellus and in the diploids T. dubius and T. pratensis. ABSTRACT A novel category of variable tandem repeats (VNTR) called mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units (MIRUs) has been identified for Mycobacterium ulcerans (n = 39), M. marinum (n = 27), and one related organism. Fifteen MIRU loci were identified in the genome of M. marinum and were used to genotype M. ulcerans, M. marinum, and an M. marinum-like organism that is considered a possible missing link between M. marinum and M. ulcerans. Seven MIRU loci were polymorphic, and locus-specific PCRs for four of these loci differentiated seven M. ulcerans genotypes, four M. marinum genotypes, and a unique genotype for the missing link organism. The seven M. ulcerans genotypes were related to six different geographic origins of isolates. All isolates from West and Central Africa, including old and recent isolates, belonged to the same genotype, emphasizing the great spatiotemporal homogeneity among African isolates. Unlike the M. ulcerans genotypes, the four M. marinum genotypes could not be clearly related to the geographic origins of the isolates. According to MIRU-VNTR typing, all M. ulcerans and M. marinum isolates of American origin were closely related, suggesting a common American ancestor for these two pathogenic species on the American continents. MIRU typing has significant potential value for discriminating between reoccurrence and reinfection for M. ulcerans disease.

The cetacean fauna at the Tristan da Cunha archipelago has been assessed from ship-based, aerial and land-based observations from 1983–2000, from strandings on Tristan da Cunha and Inaccessible Island between 1983 and 1995, and from whaling catch data from 1934–1967. Five species (Eubalaena australis, Megaptera novaeangliae, Tasmacetus shepherdi, Globicephala melas and Orcinus orca) have been sighted within the territorial waters of the archipelago, eight species (Balaenoptera physalus, B. borealis, B. acutorostrata/bonaerensis, Physeter macrocephalus, Mesoplodon mirus, M. bowdoini, Delphinus sp. and Lissodelphis peronii) have been seen or taken within 200 nautical miles (360 km) of the group or have been found stranded on its shores, while another two species (Caperea marginata and Lagenorhynchus obscurus) have been recorded close enough to be considered likely to occur within 200 nautical miles. The records of Mesoplodon mirus and M. bowdoini represent significant extensions to their known distribution. Apart from its possible importance as a mid-oceanic nursery area for southern right whales, the waters of the Tristan Archipelago seem to be a concentration area for T. shepherdi, one of the least-known of the world's cetaceans.

A recently discovered tetrapod-bearing locality (OMNH V1005) in the Upper Pennsylvanian Ada Formation of Oklahoma has produced the remains of six taxa: the pelycosaurian-grade synapsid Ophiacodon cf. mirus, an indeterminate sphenacodontian pelycosaur, the temnospondyl Eryops? sp., the rare diadectid Diasparactus zenos, and two unidentified taxa known only from jaw fragments. The skeletal material comprises an allochthonous assemblage transported by low-velocity currents prior to burial. Except for four articulated Ophiacodon vertebral segments, all fossil material recovered in situ was disarticulated. The bones were not exposed to prolonged periods of weathering prior to burial. OMNH V1005 records the first occurrence of Eryops, Diasparactus, and Ophiacodon from the Pennsylvanian of Oklahoma. The presence of Diasparactus zenos indicates that this species was not endemic to New Mexico, as formerly believed. An associated dentary provides the first well-preserved cheek teeth of Diasparactus zenos. Compared to other North American diadectid genera, these teeth resemble more closely those of Diadectes than those of Desmatodon. The occurrence of Ophiacodon mirus, which was previously known from Lower Permian strata of New Mexico, extends both the stratigraphic and geographic range of this species. The Ada assemblage resembles those found in Permo-Carboniferous deltaic deposits in the southwestern United States.

This causes faster recovery and lesser post-operative pain.Methods: In authors institute, stapled haemorrhoidopexy was being carried out using two rows proximate PPH circular haemorrhoidal stapler. In February 2018, MIRUS three rows circular stapler was introduced. This is a retrospective observational study carried out at Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, India. Authors studied records and operative notes of all patients who underwent stapled haemorrhoidopexy between February 2018 and September 2019 and compared key parameters.Results: A total of 224 patients underwent stapled haemorrhoidopexy between February 2018 and September 2019. 116 using MIRUS three rows circular stapler and 108 using two rows proximate PPH circular haemorrhoidal stapler. Most of the studied parameters were comparable with only significant statistical difference seen in higher use of haemostatic sutures in two rows stapler group compared to three rows stapler group. Haemostatic sutures were needed in three row stapler group for 27 patients and in two rows stapler group for 39 patients.Conclusions: Author’s initial experience shows slightly better haemostasis with three rows stapled haemorrhoidopexy with no significant difference in other parameters.

In recent years, inhaled sedation has been increasingly used in the intensive care unit (ICU). The aim of this prospective, controlled trial was to compare washout and awakening times after long term sedation with desflurane and isoflurane both administered with the Mirus™ system (TIM GmbH, Koblenz, Germany). Twenty-one consecutive critically ill patients were alternately allocated to the two study groups, obtaining inhaled sedation with either desflurane or isoflurane. After 24 h study sedation, anesthetic washout curves were recorded, and a standardized wake-up test was performed. The primary outcome measure was the time required to decrease the endtidal concentration to 50% (T50%). Secondary outcome measures were T80% and awakening times (all extremities moved, RASS −2). Decrement times (min) (desflurane versus isoflurane, median (1st quartile—3rd quartile)) (T50%: 0.3 (0.3–0.4) vs. 1.3 (0.4–2.3), log-rank test P = 0.002; P80%: 2.5 (2–5.9) vs. 12.1 (5.1–20.2), P = 0.022) and awakening times (to RASS −2: 7.5 (5.5–8.8) vs. 41.0 (24.5–43.0), P = 0.007; all extremities moved: 5.0 (4.0–8.5) vs. 13.0 (8.0–41.25), P = 0.037) were significantly shorter after desflurane compared to isoflurane. The use of desflurane with the Mirus™ system significantly shortens the washout times and leads to faster awakening after sedation of critically ill patients.

Abstract:

El género Adelpharctos era solo conocido por una especie A. mirus representada por una única mandibular (p2-m2) procedente de las colecciones antiguas del Quercy, cuya edad geológica es desconocida. Nuevo material procedente de la localidad de Pech-du-Fraysse completa nuestro conocimiento sobre el género, en particular para el maxilar y la dentición superior. Adelpharctos pertenece a la subfamilia Hemicyoninae, familia Ursidae. El género difiere de los hemicioninos del Mioceno medio, que tienen dentición más robusta, y de los del grupo Cephalogae-Phoberogale por algunos caracteres morfológicos. Se interpreta como perteneciente a una línea procedente del grupo ancestral primitivo de la subfamilia Hemicyoninae.

Abstract:

Himalcercyon Hebauer, 2002 stat. nov. is elevated to genus rank based on the unique form of its mesoventral elevation. The genus is reviewed, redescribed, and illustrated in detail. Two species are recognized: Himalcercyon mirus (Hebauer, 2002) comb. nov. from Nepal and H. franzisp. nov. from Chinese Himalaya (Xizang Autonomous Region). Both species are illustrated and diagnosed. An updated key to the Asian genera of the tribe Megasternini (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae, Sphaeridiinae) is provided, along with the SEM micrographs of ventral morphology of these genera. New replacement name Oreosternumnom. nov. is proposed for Oreocyon Hebauer, 2002 which is preoccupied by Oreocyon Marsh, 1872 (Mammalia, Oxyenidae) and Oreocyon Krumbiegel, 1949 (Mammalia, Canidae).

Abstract:

Two plant-inhabiting species of Mediolata were collected in the Iberian Peninsula during biodiversity assessments between 2000–2002. Mediolata roigi, sp. nov. and M. chanti Gonzalez were collected in Spain and Portugal respectively. The studies were conducted in citrus orchards in Portugal and apple orchards and vineyards in Spain. Because of some incorrect data in the original description of M. chanti, it is re-described. Eupalopsis vandergeesti Gomaa & Bolland is revealed to be a junior synonym of M. chanti and Mediolata mirus Chaudhri et al. is transferred to the family Eupalopsellidae under the genus Exthothoris. A key to the known species of the genus Mediolata is provided.
