Abstract:
The relationship between temperature and humidity of the environment with visibility of mirage has been studied by observing mirage on the runway of Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport (SIM) Aceh, Indonesia. Temperature and humidity data were obtained from the Blang Bintang Meteorological Station database, Aceh Besar, Aceh, Indonesia. The observation shows that the mirage has been found since 07.00 AM in the morning until the afternoon at 18.00 PM, even until sunset. Mirage is also still visible when the weather is cloudy or drizzling, but disappears when heavy rain. The lowest and highest temperatures where the mirage can still be observed are 26 0C and 32 0C, respectively. Meanwhile, the lowest and highest air humidities where mirages can still be observed are 51 % and 92 %, respectively. Observation shows that changes in temperature and humidity in the runway environment greatly affect the appearance and visibility of mirages. When the air temperature is high and the humidity is low, the mirage appears with high visibility (very thick), so that it can be observed clearly. Conversely, when the air temperature is low and the humidity is high, the mirage appears with low visibility (very thin) or almost non-existent or completely gone

Abstract:
AbstractA method has been developed for deducing the variation with height of the atmospheric temperature, using the observed form of a mirage as the input. This method is applicable to the class of mirages in which the object appears undistorted, although magnified, vertically displaced, and quite possibly inverted: here applied to an observation of this class of mirage made by Dr William Scoresby in 1822, it is used to deduce the nature of the temperature inversion prevailing on that occasion.

Abstract:
The organization of homologous protein sequences into multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) is a cornerstone of modern analysis of proteins. Recent focus on the importance of alternatively-spliced isoforms in disease and cell biology has highlighted the need for MSA software that can appropriately account for isoforms and the exon-length insertions or deletions that isoforms may have relative to each other. We previously developed Mirage, a software package for generating MSAs for isoforms spanning multiple species. Here, we present Mirage2, which retains the fundamental algorithms of the original Mirage implementation while providing substantially improved translated mapping and improving several aspects of usability. We demonstrate that Mirage2 is highly effective at mapping proteins to their encoding exons, and that these protein-genome mappings lead to extremely accurate intron-aware alignments. Additionally, Mirage2 implements a number of engineering improvements that simplify installation and use.

Abstract:
AbstractThe overview of the recent results for discovery and investigations of a very exotic phenomenon – optical mirage in the X-ray spectral range – is presented. It was found that the mirage could be created in the form of coherent virtual point source, emerging in the vicinity of the second plasma in two-stage oscillator-amplifier X-ray laser. The X-ray source-mirage, rigidly phased with the initial radiation of generator, occurs only when amplification takes place in the amplifier plasma and leads to the appearance of the interference pattern in the form of concentric rings in the spatial profile of the output X-ray laser beam. The equation describing the emergence of X-ray mirage was found, numerical solution of which shows that its formation is similar to that of the optical mirages observed at propagation of light rays through an inhomogeneously heated air. Obtained results have already demonstrated novel comprehension into the physical nature of amplification of X-ray radiation, opening additional opportunities for X-ray interferometry, holography, and other applications, which require multiple rigidly phased sources of coherent radiation.

A senior analyst has recently completed an on-site visit to the Las Vegas properties of MGM Mirage. She must value the enterprise after her preparation of projected financial statements. Assumptions for these statements come from a combination of standard account relations delineated in the case and from specific company projections that must be gleaned from MGM's MD&A. This case introduces students to pro forma financial statements and their relevance to cash flow and earnings-based valuation. Tools relevant to spreadsheet modeling can also be introduced. The case precedes MGM's announced acquisition of Mandalay Bay Corporation in 2004.

Abstract:
An antimetabolite, administered orally, which alleviates the symptoms and signs of severe psoriasis, azaribine (triacetyl-6-azauridine), was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA of the USA) for clinical use in 1975, but 18 months later approval was withdrawn. The mechanism of action of azaribine (as a precursor of 6-azauridine 5’-azauridine 5’-monophosphate) is described and the probable cause of the infrequent vascular thromboses and a means of preventing them (by the co-administration of pyridoxine) are discussed.
