My research focuses on how the Church of Milan related in many ways with the industrial labour’s world during the transformations triggered by the economic development that hit some part of Italy between 1953 and the mid-Sixty’s – and by the Second Vatican Council (1958-1965) from its calling to its completion. I mostly referred to original papers stored in the Archivio diocesano di Milano (Archive of the diocese of Milan) and in the Archivio per la storia del movimento sociale cattolico in Italia (Archive for the history of the catholic social movement in Italy) at the Università cattolica di Milano (Catholic University of Milan) analysing them through the comparison with reviews and journals of the time, also exploiting the main critical studies related to these issues. Within this frame, my research contributes to reveal the conflicts but also the dynamism of the Ambrosian Catholicism mostly supported by the political debate and by the economical and social transformations that the Italian society was undergoing in those period. The Milanese dioceses presents itself – in the time span between the mid Fifties and the 1965 – as a laboratory that anticipated some of the tensions and trends followed by the worldwide Catholicism after the end of the Second Vatican Council.

Abstract:
The dissertation deals with the complex evolution of theories and practices of industrial relations between the interwar years and postwar growth. “Fordism” is the catchword usually associated with relations between the corporation, labor and government in this period and, more generally, with the supposed social compact arising from the very structure of mass production and its supposed virtuous circle with mass consumption. In this wider sense, Fordism has often been coupled, sometimes overlapped, with Keynesian macroeconomics, government economic interventionism, and the welfare state. The dissertation attempts to disentangle and discuss this supposedly simple notion of “Fordism” by tracing its manifold history and international circulation. Therefore, it involves a wide discussion of the conflict between labor and management in the mass production industries, and a focus on three case studies: the history of Elton Mayo’s “human relations” doctrine, from its origins in Australia to its applications in Europe; the evolution of the surveillance system at Fiat factories in Turin, from the last years of the Fascist regime to the late 1960s; labor scholar Gino Giugni’s experience as a student at Madison, Wisconsin, and later as a translator of American theories of the labor movement and of industrial relations, in the 1950s and 1960s

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to trace a «history of italian TV audiences», conceived on readers’ and users’ perspectives, investigating cultural consumption of Italian working classes during the so called «miracolo economico». Historical studies on Italian television have always focused on broadcasting rather than receivers. Analyzing a wide range of statistical, oral and autobiographical sources (letters, diaries, memories), the thesis tries to capture the voice of the Italian working classes and hence to understand the change that collective identities and societies went through during the «miracolo economico». No other cultural product was shaped by, and at the same time and for, popular Italian culture as TV programs did, determining collective and social behavior. Therefore, my thesis aims to display the organizing procedures of the working audiences: to catch the role played by TV in popular classes' everyday life.

Abstract:
Southern immigration in Turin in Italy in the economic miracle. The case of Sardinia during the season of Rinascita. The aims of this work to analyze the Italian migration phenomenon during the 1950s and 1960s of the twentieth century. Italian emigration was a social phenomenon of great importance in the Italian society and the analysis of the history of migration in its various economic, social and political, he joined the Italian national history. It is a known fact that Italy was a nation of great emigration from the nineteenth century to the present day and therefore in the following work I have tried to reconstruct the history of Italian emigration during the second world war. This topic is devoted the first chapter of this work. At the end of World War II, Italy was a poor and agricultural nation and the lack of jobs pushed the Italians to emigrate to Europe and northern Italy to obtain better living conditions. The emigration of Italian workers was at the base of Italian foreign policy and the President of the Italian Government Alcide De Gasperi, who shook economic agreements with European countries to encourage the emigration of the Italian workforce. After the catastrophe of Marcinelle the emigration to northern Italy (more precisely to the city of Turin) represented an important alternative to emigration to Europe. Immigration to the city of Turin is dedicated the second chapter of this work. The city of Turin during the fifties and sixties of the twentieth century was hit by a large flow of migrants coming from southern Italy. Italians from southern Italy went to Turin to look for a job, a home and a better future. With immigration in Turin were born numerous problems: immigrants were living in old houses in the historic center of Turin, were heavy jobs that did not guarantee good living conditions, also the relationship between Italians from southern Italy and the Turin population were very difficult. After analyzing the Southern Italian Immigration in Turin, in the third chapter of this work, I have tried to describe the events and stories of the many Sardinian arrived in Turin during the fifties and sixties of the twentieth century to look for a job and better living conditions. The Sardinians in Turin managed to integrate into the city and were praised for their qualities of honesty, hard work, seriousness and for their intellectual abilities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is the analysis, by documentary images, shoot from post-war period until the “economic boom”, of landscape, anthropological, cultural and economic transformation which took place in North-East Italy. Thanks to a multidisciplinary approach which deals with sociological, artistic, psychoanalytic, philosophic, historic and economic aspects, the work develops enabling a deeper, more stratified and complex reading of the cinematographic representation of this transformation. After a short introduction in which the methodological and content choices are explained, we pass to the body of the thesis, divided into three main areas: The work, the rite, the sacred; The landscape, the soul of the places, the places without a soul; The loss of human importance towards the space. In the first domain, after realizing the total lack of religious or anthropological documentaries as the ones shoot in South Italy in the same period, the presence of the sacred is investigated from other points of view. Since the sacred always slopes down, after all, into the rite, a possible comparison can be found in the rite of work. It is thanks to the short films realized by Ermanno Olmi for Edisonvolta that work becomes the symbol of the holy rite, of the human demiurge who keeps his knowledge and his own individuality in spite of the quick passage to the modern. However, this perspective is counterbalanced by other film directors who show, instead, the dehumanization of the worker inside the factory, thus analysing the different aspects of the same issue. In the second area, work is no more related to the sacred but it becomes a tool which frees from hunger, sorrow and humiliation, as evident in Florestano Vancini’s works. Supported by the “Camera del lavoro” of Ferrara, these works associate the civil and political commitment to a style which is influenced by both the neorealist and the “macchiaioli” painting. The landscape, which in Vancini’s works is subject of denouncement because of its decay, or a matter of pictorial digressions if interpreted in a bucolic perspective, in film directors like Piavoli and the less known Renzo Ragazzi, becomes immediately a myth bearer. In the third part, in comparison with the anthropocentrical vision of the first one and with the balanced perspective between man and nature of the second one, there is a process of depersonalisation of man until his final disappearance. The results are empty spaces or disturbing architectonic buildings in a De Chirico style. The filmmaker who better grabs this tendency is Michelangelo Antonioni whose works not only deal with philosophic existential and aesthetic problems but also directly reflect upon this vision. Antonioni’s short films are compared with those of other film directors who, consciously or unconsciously, are influenced by him. They are charmed by the “shapes” of his rural and urban landscapes, stating at the same time the loss of the human being bearing. In the conclusion, besides summing up the different trends focused by the analysis of the cinematographic material taken into account, we try to identify the film directors who, still today, both in documentary and in fiction, talk about the changes of the territory. We also try to identify the ones who are looking again for the soul of the landscape by putting art, literature, poetry and especially cinema as places of the memory and by considering them as tools able to hinder the levelling and the barbaric destruction.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
For my BFA Capstone exhibition Preying For a Miracle I analyzed the Biblical book of Job found in the Old Testament in relation to my own life. My interest in the Book of Job stems from a human desire to understand suffering, especially suffering that is unprovoked. At the beginning of the book of Job, Job is described as “blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil”. (Job 1:1) As the first chapter of the book progresses, Satan comes to God and presents a wager. Satan insinuates that Job is only faithful to God because God has “put a hedge around him”. (Job 1:9) Satan proposes that he can make Job curse God’s name if he removes the abundant blessings he has received. God accepts this wager and declares that as long as Job’s life is spared Satan can do with him as he wants, which begins a series of brutal trials. I found myself asking how can such violence and human suffering be justified?

Abstract:
This thesis reports the results of a study designed to investigate the influence of exposure to televised medical dramas on perceptions of medical miracles. Four hundred and eighty-one college students participated in a survey in which they responded to different questions about their medical drama viewership and their different beliefs with regard to medical miracles. Results found that heavy medical drama viewers perceived belief in medical miracles to be less normal than non-viewers. Similarly, heavy viewers perceived medical miracles to occur less often than non-viewers. Interestingly, heavy viewers perceived medical dramas to be less credible than non-viewers. In addition, this study found that personal experience with medical miracles affected responses across all three measured viewership levels. The study concludes that, when compared to no exposure to medical dramas, heavy exposure has the potential for creating a more realistic view of medical miracles. Future research should continue to study genre-specific cultivation effects with regard to health perceptions.

Mendoza, Waldo. "The Peruvian Miracle: Good luck or good policies?" Economía, 2014. http://repositorio.pucp.edu.pe/index/handle/123456789/117224.

Full text
Abstract:
The Peruvian economy has performed extraordinarily over the last 10 years. The 2012 per capita GDP is 66 percent above that of 2002, and more than double its 1992 level. In a long term perspective, the cumulative growth of GDP per capita recorded in the last 10 years has been the strongest since 1900. This is the «Peruvian miracle». This paper aims to find the determinants of the Peruvian miracle. In theory, countries’ macroeconomic performance can be determined by two factors: i) the «good (bad) luck effect» that relates to the international context, which may be favorable or unfavorable, and ii) the «good (bad) policies effects», associated with short-term macroeconomic policies or structural reforms, which are policies that alter the current development model. The hypothesis of this work is that the Peruvian miracle of the last 10 years has much to do with good luck, and, in part, with good short-term macroeconomic policies.

Abstract:

Background

After a successful launch in early 2007 Pond’s Age Miracle, Unilever Vietnam’s anti-aging skincare product, is now experiencing falling sales and a declining market share having failed to complete its mission of counter-attacking its main competitor – P&G’s Olay Total Effect. This predicament poses a question of how Unilever Vietnam can improve market performance of this product.

Purpose

To determine Pond’s Age Miracle customer perceived value and propose recommendations on how to improve it.

Method

A combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches was pursued. In-depth interviews with consumers were used to discover relevant attributes of anti-aging skincare. A consumer survey was employed to measure relative importance and relative performance of the identified attributes – a basis for determining Pond’s customer perceived value.

Findings, Analysis and Conclusion

Customer perceived value of Pond’s Age Miracle was found to have a negative character on the entire market scale and across most of the listed consumer groups.

Recommendations

A re-launch of the upgraded version of Pond’s is suggested to maintain the current consumers and recruit the potential anti-aging skincare users.

Full text
Abstract:
On 27 April 1994 the most hated flag in Africa was lowered, signifying the end of the Apartheid regime. As the world watched the transformation of South Africa taking place – without the bloodshed that the state‟s direst cynics had predicted – words like "miracle" and "inspirational" abounded. Since then, the world has continued to watch South Africa‟s transition to democracy and even those who were its greatest supporters have begun to ask questions about the quality and quantity of democratic reforms. The increasing centralisation and monopolisation of power by the African National Congress, declining rates of formal participation by citizens and considerable failures in service delivery are major factors contributing to the concerns about the long-term prospects for democracy in South Africa, especially given the record of democratic failure across the rest of the continent. While significant contributions have been made to the study of South African democracy – both theoretical and empirical – there are few, if any, that have sought to combine both these methodologies and hence the scholarship is not, in my view, paying the dividends it should. This research thus explores contemporary politics in South Africa, examining its assets and liabilities in order to provide a clearer picture of the state of democracy in the country. It does so by measuring practices in South Africa in terms of the role accorded to participation in three conceptions of democracy: liberal representative accounts, deliberative accounts and what I term the "categorical" account. In so doing the research will show that although concerns about democracy in South Africa are justified, if we shift our focus from the instrumental value of participation to its categorical one we may find a way to ensure that the miracle continues.

Full text
Abstract:
At the end of the Middle Ages, the miracle was at the crossroads of fundamental religious beliefs and practices : cult of the Virgin Mary and of the saints, devotion to images and relics, vows and pilgrimages. Since the Reformation has rejected the miracle as such and everything connected with it, it is often regarded as a crucial step in the « disenchantment of the world » which results in the progressive purification of Christianity of its magical elements. The analysis of miracle during the period from 1500 to 1620 in France shows that this was not the case. The theoretical comprehension of miracle remained practically unchanged through over the considered period. The same should be stated concerning the practices connected with the miracle. The relations that people had with supernatural beings whose assistance they hoped for were based on the principle of gift and counter-gift codified long time ago, which underwent no change during the sixteenth century. Even the protestants, supposed to have rejected the miracle and the beliefs and practices attached to it, shared to some extent traditional attitudes. On the theological level, a radical providentialism allowed to reintroduce the possibility of direct divine interventions in the material world. As for the simple believers, great number of them continued to rely on saints, vows and relics, which appeared to them as an efficient help against the vicissitudes of existence

How French have perceived the economic miracle of Italy after second world war, in spite of accumulated resentment between the two countries ? It's only at the end of fiftee's that tese difficulties disappeared realy. Why this italian take off from extreme end of fortee's ? And how its reasons were perceived by french leaders ? In the same direction we are looking for the moment from which these leaders have understood this remarkable development of Italy. We are looking for the inflluence of interne debates of our neighbour on the french leaders way of approaching french problems. The question of housebuilding is particularly revealing of this italian influence at the beginning of fiftee's. As such the study of three problems implying the two countries, is very important : the union customs at the end of fortee's, the italian emigration and the tunnel of Mont Blanc. But all these requires to stop our study to 1963-1964 who are strategics years in Italy, economic and politic speaking

Full text
Abstract:
Transplantation has revolutionised the management of end stage organ disease, and is currently the treatment of choice in many developed western nations. The success of this treatment has led to an increasing demand for it, and concomitant increase in the demand for transplantable organs. Organ scarcity is widely acknowledged as the dominant, and most persistent, problem faced in contemporary transplantation. Scarcity of available organs undergirds the gift-of-life metaphor, upon which all transplantation discourses have been founded (Fox & Swazey, 2002). Gift-of-life discourse is routinely utilised in a bid to increase donation rates and enforce a ‘construction of care’ in recognition of, and reciprocity for, the scarce and precious gift received (Sothern & Dickinson, 2011). Shaw (2012) argued that gift-of-life rhetoric is prescriptive; directing, in large part, what can be felt and said in the context of transplantation. This can be problematic, as although transplantation undoubtedly extends life, it does not do so without incurring physiological and psychological cost. The immunosuppression regimens that recipients must adhere to and the psychosocial outcomes of transplantation mean that, in effect, transplantation may represent the exchange of one set of hardships for another (Sharp, 2006). Recipients often exist in a state of ‘persistent liminality’, caught between the worlds of the healthy and the sick (Crowley-Matoka, 2005). This research was undertaken to explore the lived experience of transplantation. I was particularly interested in exploring how gift-of-life understandings of transplantation might influence this experience. Given the normative expectation of gratitude in response to a gift/benefit received (McCullough & Tsang, 2004) and the centrality of gratitude to gift-of-life discourse (Shaw, 2012), I was also interested in exploring gratitude in the iii context of transplantation. Participants were 19 (i.e., 13 heart, 6 liver) recipients, and 11(i.e., 1 liver, 10 kidney) prospective recipients. I conducted semi-structured interviews, and adopted an interpretative phenomenological approach to analysis. Results indicated that a generic model cannot be applied across the range of transplantation experiences. The psychosocial experience of receiving a heart is not the same as the experience of receiving a liver, or that of receiving a kidney. Social constructions of the particular organ being received (e.g., the liver, a life-saving organ, is more ‘precious’ than the kidney, a quality-of-life organ), and of those most likely to need that organ (e.g., liver recipients are alcoholics who are responsible for their illness) shape the experience of receiving (or waiting to receive) a heart, liver, or kidney. While all participants acknowledged an awareness of gift-of-life discourse, and its potential to direct their experience (e.g., considerations of whether or not they were worthy or deserving of the gift-of-life), many reported they did not understand transplantation in this way. Recipients did not uniformly express gratitude and, here too, the particular organ being received appeared to exert an influence (e.g., heart recipients most often expressed gratitude, while many liver recipients did not report gratitude in relation to their transplant). These findings provide new insights with respect to the experience of transplantation, and also to the experience of gratitude.

Abstract:
The PhD thesis consists in a reconstruction of the different phases of the decoration of the ambulatory of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Miracoli presso San Celso (between 1540 and 1566) through the examination of works, documents and bibliography. The first part is dedicated to the Sanctuary as a whole, and consists of: a chapter that analyzes the art historiography from the end of the Sixteenth century to today; three appendices, respectively dedicated to the guides (of the Sanctuary and of Milan), the visual fortune and the "fabbricieri" (the Sanctuary holders). The second part is dedicated to the phases of the decoration of the ambulatory and consist of: a chapter that analyzes in chronological order the making of the decoration (with digressions on the period prior to 1540 and next to 1566, in particular on the Borromaic period and on the nineteenth-century restorations); a entry for each work (altar piece) or decorative intervention (stuccoes and frescoes). The thesis is accompanied by a substantial array of images (largely derived from a photo campaign thanks to the instrumentation made available by the Department), a rich document summary and a bibliography.

Millou, Yves. Thesis, Normandie, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018NORMR008/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The miraculous can be understood as a category of event, either profane or religious. Only the latter, in its Christian perspective, will be dealt with in this present work. But in order for this believer’s point of view to mean anything to the impartial observer, the choice has been made to examine the reactions of surprise and wonder felt by the beneficiaries of these unusual events. Could these reactions inform us about what supposedly takes place in the miraculous? The phenomenological methodology which has been implemented in order to answer this question relies on two corpuses: one consists in a set of New Testament texts, in which the reactions of surprise and wonder which accompany the miracles are evaluated to understand how they operate in the mechanism of revelation at work in those texts; the other is composed of narratives told by beneficiaries of miracles who have been interviewed within the frame of the micro-phenomenological 1st person method. Once they have been transcribed and analyzed for their emotional content, these narratives make available experiential resources which exemplify how the miraculous is lived by the beneficiaries, how it surprised and overwhelmed them. The phenomenology of surprise thus brought forward and confronted to that which can be drawn from Scripture narratives enables, first, to understand better how affects of surprise and wonder operate during so-called miraculous irruptive events, and how their materiality, can account for such an experience. But the work also aims at characterizing surprise and wonder as full-fledged phenomenological tools usable for the understanding of the human reality confronted to what exceeds it

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO
COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR
PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTS. DE ENSINO
A produção do arquiteto carioca Sergio Bernardes (1919/2002) é tão vasta quanto desconhecida.
The production of the Brazilian and native of Rio de Janeiro architect Sergio Bernardes is as vast as unknown. Assertive and questioner, since the beginning of his career, he presented himself against the conceptual, stylistic and projective formats. Graduated in 1948 at the Universidade do Brasil, he worked until 1990s in the large field of the project with abrupt change in the architectonical scale of the 1960s and 1970s. Starting from the experimentation of more restrict and defined programs, he interspersed a complex universe of the megastructures and headed prospective and visionary to the territory scale. By experimenting steel as structural source of architecture, he threw himself into the universe of the non euclidianas geometries; he hung pavilions as bridges, houses as cable cars; tested light materials in the construction, and increased the industrial production through the development of elements for series manufacturing. Through an ambitious way of multidisciplined associations of knowledge, laboratorial research and experimental investigation of the construction site, he pursued a type of systemic idealism, based on a technological virtuousism. From architect to a social inventor , he reassured his belief in the modern individual, in the power of reason, in the potency of the project and in a preventive action of future. In the Brazilian architectonical context of the 1960s and 70s, he truly believed in the renovation of his architecture, taking advantage of the good relationship he had with the Military, especially, during a period of economical force (concentration of incomes) and the progressive development of the country during the Dictatorship era, the Brazilian Miracle (1968/73). A moment in which, the architect takes over the protagonism of the just built, Federal Capital, Brasilia. This research is about four of the Sergio Bernardes emblematic projects for Brasilia– Instituto Brasileiro do Café – IBC (1968/71); Ministério da Marinha – MM (1970/73); Escola Superior de Guerra (1970/74); Monumento ao Pavilhão Nacional (1972) – all destined to the military government and finished within the period of time called the miracle , in order to understand how much of a possibility without precedents they meant for his architecture, and at the same time, how much of this opened the way to a curse that haunts his work since then.

Abstract:
Masters of Art
study analyses the concept of al-Karāmah al-Sūfīyah (the Sufi Saintly Miracle) in both its religious and literary dimensions. The researcher will shed more light on this genre of narrative literary phenomena by developing its definition and placing it in the social and historical context of the Sufi thought as a whole. Many communities in the Islamic world embrace and practice the Sufi doctrine and also believe in the Ṣūfī Sheikhs’ saintly miracles and its paranormal aspects, which they also consider to be parallel in its sacredness to the miracles of the Prophets. Furthermore, in this study the researcher will not only focus on the religious significance of the saintly miracle but also on their literary approach and aesthetic dimensions. In fact many of the contemporary Arab scholars and Litterateurs categorize this narrative discourse to fall under the cloak of al-Adab al-‘ajāibī (miraculous literature) due to the nature of its narrative style and structure from which it achieves its goals, such as: Myth – Legend – Superstition – Storytelling, etc. The study will be mainly qualitative. It is a content analysis study in the sense that the researcher will analyse the stylistic, formal and rhetorical techniques of the saintly miracles’ discourse with specific reference to extracts taken from al- Sheikh al-Hassan al- Shadili and al-Sheikh Abdelssalam Bin Machich. The study will use an eclectic theoretical and conceptual framework which combines the historical approach with the reception theory.
