Molto vari per consistenza demografica, articolazione sociale, dinamismo economico, questi insediamenti costituiscono nel loro insieme un elemento caratterizzante, costitutivo dell’identità storica italiana: un suo ‘carattere originale’. Questo volume, grazie ad alcuni saggi di inquadramento e a una mappatura di casi singoli che tocca gran parte delle regioni del nord, del centro e del sud, si propone di indagare sulle vivaci ricerche dedicate a tale tematica degli ultimi trenta-quarant’anni.
