Abstract:
Research has demonstrated that mining activities can cause serious impacts on the environment, as well as the surrounding communities, mainly due to the unsafe storage of mine tailings. This research focuses on the sustainability assessment of new technologies for the recovery of metals from mine residues. The assessment consists in the evaluation of the environmental, economic, and social impacts through the Life Cycle based methods: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA). The analyses are performed on the Mondo Minerals bioleaching project, which aim is to recover nickel and cobalt from the Sotkamo and Vuonos mine tailings. The LCA demonstrates that the project contributes to the avoided production of nickel and cobalt concentrates from new resources, hence reducing several environmental impacts. The LCC analysis shows that the company’s main costs are linked to the bioleaching process, caused by electricity consumption and the chemicals used. The SLCA analyses the impacts on three main stakeholder categories: workers, local community, and society. The results demonstrated that a fair salary (or the absence of it) impacts the workers the most, while the local community stakeholder category impacts are related to the access to material resources. The health and safety category is the most impacted category for the society stakeholder. The environmental and economic analyses demonstrate that the recovery of mine tailings may represents a good opportunity for mine companies both to reduce the environmental impacts linked to mine tailings and to increase the profitability. In particular, the project helps reduce the amounts of metals extracted from new resources and demonstrates that the use of the bioleaching technology for the extraction of metals can be economically profitable.

Abstract:
Major impacts of current and pre-regulatory mining activities on the environment include the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) and metal(loid)-laden acid sulfate soils. Current remediation techniques are mostly cost prohibitive due to high energy, material, and labor requirement. This study investigated two complementary low-cost methods that harnessed the metal(loid)-removing and acid-neutralizing properties of drinking water treatment residuals (WTRs) and the uptake (phytoremediation) potential of vetiver (Vetiviera zizanioides L.) and pokeweed (Phytolacca americana L.) to attenuate and immobilize metal(loid)s from natural AMD and metal(loid)-contaminated soil. Metals were removed from AMD by using a reverse flow fluidized column filter and hydroponic phytoremediation with vetiver and pokeweed. Metals were immobilized in soil through the amendment with Fe and Ca-WTR complimented by the uptake and translocation of metals by vetiver and pokeweed. Experiments were performed under controlled greenhouse conditions as well as under natural Illinois environment in simulated field conditions. Furthermore, the integrated effects of WTR application and the growth of vetiver on soil erosion were also studied. Physicochemical analysis of AMD and soil samples from the Tab-Simco abandoned mine in the Illinois Coal Basin, U.S.A, showed significant concentrations of major metals and metalloids such as Fe, Al, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cu and As at acidic pH levels. The degree of soil contamination at the site was spatially variable with respect to the location of the main AMD seep. Physical, chemical, agronomic and mineralogical characterization of locally acquired water treatment residuals (WTR) showed that the silty and alkaline (pH ≈ 7.0-9.1) materials also contained significant amounts of plant required micronutrients. The presence of amorphous phases of mostly metal (oxy)hydroxides, alkalinity, and porosity of the WTRs suggested the potential to neutralize acidity and capability to remove metal(loid)s in contaminated soils and AMD. Recorded metal removal (%MR) rate by WTR was rapid in the first 80 min in a batch agitation study, except for Mn. Thus, high metal removal ranging from 99.8% to 84.9% at selectivity sequence of Al>Fe>Cu>Zn and Mn (9.6%) was obtained at equilibrium. The pH of the AMD was also increased from 2.6 to 6.7. Analysis of leachate samples from gravity-drained columns following simulated rain events in a greenhouse study showed reduced concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, As and Pb at sustained neutral pH compared with unamended control columns during the 12 weeks study period. Metal immobilization in soil by the lower amendment rates of WTR was comparable to the higher application rates and also showed lower oxalate extractability of metals. Tissue analysis of pokeweed and vetiver hyperaccumulators showed appreciable uptake of relevant elements although translocation was relatively low in both. The analytical results at the greenhouse scale was reproducible in a simulated field scale study under natural Illinois environmental condition where the best amendment rate including 50 g/kg Fe-WTR and 15 g/kg of Ca-WTR and manure helped to improve metal(loid) retention, soil structure and enhanced vetiver growth which subsequently aided in reducing the rate of erosion to levels comparable to bermudagrass which was used as control. The developed integrated WTR fluidized column and phytoremediation technique with vetiver and pokeweed under hydroponic conditions sequentially removed significant quantities of most heavy metals from AMD. Thus, the overall findings showed that the locally collected WTRs - the otherwise waste materials, showed high metal-removing and acidity-reducing capabilities in AMD and contaminated soil treatment applications. The similarity between the results obtained from the laboratory and simulated field study also showed that laboratory/greenhouse experiments may serve as reliable proxies for field responses in applications such as soil and water conservation in agricultural environments, remediation of abandoned mine lands, as well as wastewater treatment systems.

"The application of high capacity ion exchange adsorbent material, synthesized from fly ash and acid mine drainage, for the removal of heavy and trace metal from secondary Co-disposal process waters." Abstract:
In South Africa, being the second largest global coal exporter, coal mining plays a pivotal role in the growth of our economy, as well as supplying our nation’s ever increasing electricity needs; while also accounting for more than 10% of the 20 x 109 m3 water used annually in the country. Coal mining may thus be classified as a large-scale water user; known to inevitably generate wastewater [acid mine drainage (AMD)] and other waste material, including fly ash (FA). Current and conventional AMD treatment technologies include precipitation–aggregation (coagulation/flocculation) – settling as hydroxides or insoluble salts. The process stream resulting from these precipitation processes is still highly saline, therefore has to undergo secondary treatment. The best available desalination techniques include reverse osmosis (RO), electro dialysis (ED), ion exchange and evaporation. All available treatment methods associated with raw AMD and its derived process stream fall prey to numerous drawbacks. The result is that treatment is just as costly as the actual coal extraction. In addition, remediation only slows the problem down, while also having a short lifespan. Research conducted into converting fly ash, an otherwise waste material, into a marketable commodity has shown that direct mixing of known ratios of FA with AMD to a pre-determined pH, erves a dual purpose: the two wastes (AMD and FA) could be neutralized and produced a much cleaner water (secondary co-disposal [FA/AMD]-process water), broadly comparable to the process water derived from precipitation-aggregation treated AMD. The collected post process solid residues on the other hand, could be used for production of high capacity ion exchange material (e.g. zeolite A, faujasite, zeolite P, etc.). The produced ion exchange material can subsequently be utilized for the attenuation of metal species in neutralized FA/AMDprocess waters.

Benaiges-Fernandez, Robert. "Bioreduction of iron (hydr)oxides from mine tailings under marine conditions." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/673411.

Full text
Abstract:
Mining industry faces environmental problems concerning waste management. Given the environmental issues associated with storage of mine wastes on land, one disposal option that has gained attraction is submarine tailings disposal (STD). This practice involves disposal of mine tailings under seawater through underwater pipelines. Discharged mine wastes may be geochemically altered by microbial communities that living in the seabed have an ecophysiology that is compatible with the mine tailings. These communities (e.g., Shewanella, Geobacter) would be able to reduce the structural Fe(III) of oxides and oxyhydroxides (henceforth referred to as (hydr)oxides) of iron contained in the tailings, leading to a release of Fe(II) and Trace Elements (TEs) into the marine environment. The present study aimed at understanding the reaction of bioreduction of iron (hydr)oxides that are contained in mine tailings and assessing the environmental impact of STD. For this purpose, different samples of iron (hydr)oxides and mine tailings were reacted in batch and column experiments in the presence of Shewanella loihica, a dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria. The release of Fe(II) and TE was monitored throughout the experiments, and the surface of the reacted oxides were examined. Geochemical simulations of the experimental data were used to quantify the extent of the overall reductive dissolution reaction. Furthermore, to understand the influence of aqueous iron in the ocean’s nitrogen cycle, a series of experiments were carried out with Fe(II) released from bioreduced iron oxides in the presence of nitrite. Results showed that Shewanella loihica bioreduces Fe(III) from the iron (hydr)oxides contained in the mine tailings under marine conditions. The dissolution process leads to a release of Fe(II) and TEs, which are harmful for the marine environment. It was deduced that the reactive surface area of the iron (hydr)oxides is a key factor in the bioreduction process as it provides available Fe(III) and available surface, on which Shewanella loihica attach for electron transferring. However, adsorption of some of released Fe(II) onto the surface leads to a decrease in the reactive surface area, which lowers the total available Fe(III), and to a transformation of the former oxide to a new biogenic phase containing Fe2+/Fe3+ (i.e. magnetite). Moreover, it was demonstrated that the Fe(II) released promotes a nitrite removal, interfering thus with the nitrogen cycle of the ocean. The nitrite removal was characterized using chemical and isotopic analyses, which allowed a better understanding of the mechanisms controlling the Fe(II)-N interaction and an identification of the source of nitrite reduction in the sea. From the results, it is inferred that STD can become a major environmental concern because (1) the Fe(II) released may lead to fertilization and eutrophication of disposal sites, resulting in an oxygen depletion and an expansion of the oxygen minimum zone and (2) the TEs released bioaccumulate in the environment and trophic webs, ultimately affecting human health and social economic development.

Abstract:
Surface mining is important to our modern way of life and to coal mining in the United States of America. Unfortunately old and new surface mining sites produce a metal-rich acidic solution termed acid mine drainage (AMD), which contaminates water and soil. Acid sulfate soil is unstable and prone to erode, and spreading this acidic sulfate–rich liquid across mine sites may increase the amount of AMD that can be generated. The current study focused on evaluating two affordable passive treatments of AMD and AMD-impacted water which could be used together to construct a semipermeable membrane for erosion control of acidic soils, immobilization of heavy metals, and to increase the pH. The first treatment was the land application of an inexpensive industrial by-product, drinking water treatment residuals (WTRs) to treat AMD with its alkalinity and metal binding affinity. The second treatment, intended for placement behind the WTR to clean metal-contaminated water and provide erosion control was the perennial grass, sunshine vetiver (Chrysopogon Zizanioides). Sunshine vetiver is fast-growing, non-invasive, extremely tolerant of adverse AMD conditions, and a hyperaccumulator of some metals. In this experiment, all the sunshine vetiver grasses were able to grow in the practical mixtures of WTR and AMD-soil considered. With exposure to acidity the investigated WTRs released greater amounts of toxic heavy metals, the RCRA8 metals and aluminum, than ideal for use as a soil amendment on AMD sites. i

Morokane, Tebogo Molefe Shadrack. "The impact of gold and coal mine residue on water resources in the Roodepoort and Newcastle areas." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/30818.

Full text
Abstract:
Large quantities of tailings are produced during gold and coal mining activities. These tailings consist of ash dumps, waste rock dumps, in-pit deposits and any other heap, pile or accumulation of residue in the tailings or slimes dams. It has been reported that these tailings can have a significant impact on water quality in the vicinity of gold and coal residues in South Africa. Water quality deterioration in the vicinity of gold and coal mines in the Johannesburg and other areas has been reported. However, little information is available on the potential impact of residues on water quality near Roodepoort and Newcastle where gold and coal, respectively, are mined. The objective of this investigation was therefore to determine the potential impact of gold and coal mine residues on the environment in the vicinity of Roodepoort and Newcastle. Secondary objectives were to identify the metal constituents of gold and coal mine residues, to evaluate and define the current knowledge with regard to the short-term water quality impact of gold and coal residues in terms of concentration of metals leaching from the residues, to assess the potential impact of gold and coal tailings on the water environment within the study areas and to suggest methods to prevent pollution from taking place. Acid Base Accounting (ABA), Toxicity Characteristics Leaching (TCLP), Acid Rain Leaching Procedure (ARLP) and Inductively Plasma Coupled – Mass Spectrometry (IPC-MS) were used as tools to determine the potential impact of gold and coal tailings on the environment. Acid Base Accounting comprises two components that show the potential of the mine residue to produce acid mine drainage, that is, the total sulphur and the net neutralisation potential (NNP). It has been reported that any pyrite mine residue containing more than 0.5% total sulphur may generate acid mine drainage. Mine residues with a net neutralisation potential of less than zero ppt CaCO3 produce acid drainage. The acid base accounting results show that the gold and coal mine residues contain sulphur which has the potential to produce acid mine drainage. Lithium (Li), sodium (Na) magnesium (Mg), aluminium (Al), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and nickel (Ni) were identified to be present in the gold mine residue. The concentrations of some of the metals that leached from the gold residue according to the TCLP tests were as follows: Al (22 mg/L); Ca (242 mg/L); Fe (29 mg/L); Mn (88 mg/L) and Ni (87 mg/L). The metals that leached from the gold residue according to the ARLP results were as follows: Na (43 mg/L); Al (169 mg/L); Ca (246 mg/L); Fe (771 mg/L); Mn (16 mg/L) and Ni (11 mg/L). Higher concentrations of metals generally leached from the gold residue with the ARLP test than with the TCLP test. The sulphate concentration up-stream of the gold residue was determined at 225 mg/L. This concentration increased to 3 490 mg/L at the decanting point and to 11 577 mg/L downstream of the decanting point. The surface and possibly groundwater are therefore polluted with sulphates. Lithium (Li), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), aluminium (Al), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and nickel (Ni) were identified to be present in the coal mine residue. The concentrations of some of the metals that leached from the coal residue according to the TCLP tests were as follows: Al (3 mg/L); Ca (56 mg/L); Fe (0.21 mg/L); Mn (1 mg/L) and Ni (0.082 mg/L). The metals that leached from the coal residue according to the ARLP test results were as follows: Na (3 mg/L); Al (15 mg/L); Ca (136 mg/L); Fe (0.91 mg/L); Mn (1 mg/L) and Ni (0.07 mg/L). Higher concentrations of metals generally leached from the coal residue with ARLP test than with the TCLP test. The sulphate concentration up-stream of the coal residue was determined at 26 mg/L. This concentration increased to 3 615 mg/L at the decanting point and to 6 509 mg/L downstream of the decanting point. The surface and possibly groundwater are therefore polluted with sulphate. The upstream Na (26 mg/L), Ca (41 mg/L), Fe (0,02 mg/L), Mn (3 mg/L) and Ni (0.065 mg/L) concentrations were low in the case of the gold residues. These concentrations at the decanting point were: Na (289 mg/L); Ca (266 mg/L); Fe (0.2 mg/L); Mn (0.01 mg/L) and Ni (2 mg/L). Fifty metres downstream these concentrations were: Na (140 mg/L); Ca (389 mg/L); Fe (722 mg/L); Mn (395 mg/L) and Ni (15 mg/L). There was a significant increase in the metal concentration from up-stream of the gold residue, to the decanting point and further downstream of the gold residue. The surface and possibly ground water are therefore polluted by the metals leaching from the gold residue. The upstream Na (5 mg/L), Ca (8 mg/L), Fe (0,12 mg/L), Mn (0.015 mg/L) and Ni (0.05 mg/L) concentrations were low in the case of the coal residues. These concentrations at the decanting point were: Na (189 mg/L); Ca (337 mg/L); Fe (68 mg/L); Mn (13 mg/L) and Ni (0.06 mg/L). Fifty metres downstream these concentrations were: Na (65 mg/L); Ca (129 mg/L); Fe (0.48 mg/L); Mn (5 mg/L) and Ni (0.06 mg/L). There was a significant increase in the metal concentration from up-stream of the coal residue, to the decanting point and further downstream of the coal residue. The surface and possibly ground water are therefore polluted by the metals leaching from the coal residue. The gold and coal mine residues are polluting the surface and possibly ground water. Therefore, in order to ameliorate the current status within the Roodepoort and Newcastle catchments, mitigation and management measures such as that the residues should be covered and capped with soil material that would prevent infiltration of the oxygen and rain water into the soil, are recommended. A more comprehensive water quality analysis of the surroundings of the residues is also suggested to be able to better quantify the extent of the problem. Copyright

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Industrial processing to refine alumina from bauxite ore produces millions of tonnes of refining residue each year in Australia. Revegetation of bauxite residue sand (BRS) is problematic for a number of reasons. Harsh chemical conditions caused by residual NaOH from ore digestion mean plants must overcome extremely high pH (initially >12), saline and sodic conditions. At such high pH, manganese (Mn) is rapidly oxidised from Mn2+ to Mn4+. Plants can take up only Mn2+. Thus, Mn deficiency is common in plants used for direct BRS revegetation, and broadcast Mn fertilisers have low residual value. Added to this, physical conditions of low water-holding capacity and a highly compactable structure make BRS unfavourable for productive plant growth without constant and large inputs of water as well as Mn. However, environmental regulations stipulate that the residue disposal area at Pinjarra, Western Australia, be revegetated to conform with surrounding land uses. The major land use of the area is pasture for grazing stock. Hence, pasture revegetation with minimum requirement for fertiliser and water application is desirable. This thesis investigates a number of avenues with potential for maintaining a productive pasture system on BRS whilst reducing the current level of Mn fertiliser and irrigation input. Emphasis was placed on elucidation of chemical and physical factors affecting Mn availability to plants in BRS

Coal-fired power stations produce large volumes of coal combustion residues (CCRs), which are disposed of in hold ponds or landfill sites. These ash storage facilities are limited in space and are approaching the end of their capacities, thus additional land is required for extensions. If new land is not sourced, power plants will be forced to cease operations, resulting in increased expenditure costs and environmental liability. A proposed disposal solution is to backfill opencast coal mines with CCR monoliths. However, there is limited knowledge on the hydraulic behaviour of CCRs in an opencast coal mine environment. This leads to an inability to assess this applications feasibility and determine whether this activity will have a positive, negligible or negative effect on groundwater quality. This study aims to address this gap in knowledge by assessing the flow and transport properties of CCRs under numerous theoretical backfilling conditions.

Abstract:
This study reviews the requirements for an effective reliable inspection and discard policy based on monitoring the condition of ropes used in Indian mines. This contrasts with current practice which is based upon a policy of 'Statutory Life Policy'. Data have been collected data on rope service to study the influence of operating parameters on the degradation mechanisms affecting hoisting ropes in Indian mines. In addition to this, records on failed/premature discarded hoisting ropes from Indian mines have been also collected to classify the prominent causes of failure in terms of operating parameters. These data include 645 records of ropes (606 from 303 drum winders and 39 from 11 friction winders) which have been In service, and 45 records of failure and premature discard categorized in terms of different parameters. These data inform the proposed recommendations for policy to minimised failure through the adoption an efficacious inspection procedure.

Abstract:
Menopause is associated with disorders such as osteoporosis and ovarian cancer. It is unclear whether the postmenopausal ovary retains steroidogenic capacity and how it can impact the development of these disorders. The present studies used the VCD-treated follicle-depleted mouse model of menopause to test the hypothesis that residual ovarian tissue retains steroidogenic capacity following ovarian failure and, thus, affects the development of these disorders. Microarray technology was used to evaluate gene expression in residual ovarian tissue of follicle-depleted mice compared to that in ovaries from cycling animals. Among the genes identified were those encoding proteins for synthesis of androgens. Steroidogenic capacity of residual ovarian tissue was further evaluated by determining the expression of genes and proteins involved in ovarian steroidogenesis, and by measuring levels of circulating and rostenedione and gonadotropins. Follicle-depleted ovaries were enriched in mRNAs for androgenic enzymes, receptors involved in the internalization of cholesterol, and luteinizing hormone receptor. Increased circulating levels of FSH and LH and detectable and rostenedione were measured throughout the study. Protein for 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, 17α- hydroxylase/17,20-lyase and luteinizing hormone receptor was detected in follicledepleted ovaries by Western blot analysis and localized by immunofluorescence staining. The contribution of retaining residual ovarian tissue to accelerated bone loss following ovarian failure was evaluated by comparing bone mineral density from young and aged VCD-treated mice to that in age-matched ovariectomized (OVX) animals. Retaining residual ovarian tissue resulted in protection against accelerated bone loss in young but not aged VCD-treated mice. Whether residual ovarian tissue is more susceptible to development of ovarian neoplasms compared to ovaries from cycling animals was addressed by combining the VCD-treated mouse with the DMBA model of ovarian carcinogenesis. VCD-treated follicle-depleted mice that received DMBA developed Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors while no tumors were observed in cycling animals. Residual ovarian tissue following ovarian failure appears to have a protective effect against loss of bone integrity, but a detrimental effect on development of ovarian neoplasms. Findings from these studies: provided evidence of a physiological role for residual ovarian tissue following ovarian failure, and furthered the use of the VCD-treated mouse as a relevant model for menopause and associated disorders.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
MinC is the principle inhibitor of cell division in the Gram negative coccus Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Multiple alignment of 28 minC homologues from prokaryotic organisms revealed the conservation of four glycines in the C-terminus. Radical mutations of these residues, G138D, G157D, G164S, and G174E, were introduced to minCNg using site-directed mutagenesis and were expressed heterologously in Escherichia coli. Microscopic analysis of cellular morphology revealed abrogation of MinCNg function as indicated by the inability of the overexpressed protein to induce filamentation, and flow cytometry substantiated these data. The radical mutation of a non-conserved residue was also performed, and no impact on MinCNg function was observed. Circular dichroism was employed to confirm the preservation of protein structure in all mutants. Using the crystal structure of MinC from Thermotoga maritima, the position of the mutations of conserved and non-conserved residues was ascertained. The glycine residues were thus demonstrated to be of paramount importance to protein functionality and their conservation indicates a role for these residues in MinC function among bacterial species. The N-terminus of MinCNg is not conserved across species, but contains common structural motifs that were similarly mutagenized with moderate effect on the resultant protein as ascertained using similar methodology. Truncations of MinCNg revealed the necessity of the thirteenth amino acid for division inhibition function. Although the first ten amino acids were not necessary for protein function, the resultant protein was expressed and present in abundance, implicating a role for the extreme N-terminal region in protein stability. Plasmids for MinCNg localization and purification were also constructed to facilitate future experimentation.

Abstract:
The contamination of natural ecosystems resulting from Human activity is a problem with increasing ecological relevance. The mining activity, in particular, involves serious changes (e.g., landscape, chemical, biological) that may cause serious environmental impacts. Thus, the mining activity may cause the accumulation of heavy metals in the water column and in the sediments associated with the mineral beds, which are susceptible to determine serious environmental consequences. In the Cunha Baixa mine, until 1993, was performed the extraction of radioactive ore, such as uranium. Not only radioactive material was detected (about 1 million tons of material, with average levels of 300 ppm of U, associated with 226Ra), but also metals such as zinc, aluminium, and beryllium were determined. The aim of this study was to assess the toxicity of water and sediment of Cunha Baixa mine using two cladoceran species (Daphnia magna and Daphnia longispina), through acute and chronic tests and, also, using the bacteria Vibrio fischeri. According to the obtained results, the most sensitive species was D. longispina for both water and sediments immobilization assays, being D. magna the less sensitive. The treatment of water performed in situ, shows good results concerning the water column toxicity, as it was minimal, or practically inexistent in immobilization and chronic assays. Therefore, the water that circulates through the limitrophe agricultural fields to the mine can be classified as of good quality for irrigation, once the observed parameters are within the legislated limit values. For a better toxicological evaluation it would be necessary to perform more assays during the hydrological year, at least one assay per season. In order to characterize potential effects or ecological risks in natural populations, further studies should be performed concerning the change in the community structure, associated with bioassays with different metals to determine the potential acute and chronic effects in aquatic organisms.

Abstract:
Access to energy is crucial to human welfare; no residential, commercial or industrial activity can be conceived without energy supply. At the same time, current dependence on fossil fuels and their negative effects on global climate claim for urgent alternatives. The situation in Sub-Saharan Africa is poignant: over half of the population, mainly in rural areas, live without access to electricity services. Crop residues from farming communities in those areas are unused; while technology for electricity production from agricultural biomass is progressing, managing decentralised rural electricity projects is still a challenge, especially in developing countries like Ghana, given the variety and complexity of the factors conditioning biomass to energy supply chains. Such complexity has been previously formulated in academic exercises, but with limited practical applicability for energy planners, practitioners and investors. This research has deployed a holistic approach to biomass-to-energy planning, yet flexible to adapt to different regulatory scenarios and energy supply configurations. A qualitative framework has been developed, taking into consideration four critical components: social development, organisational/institutional, technical, and financial, with their respective metrics. Then, the framework has been applied to three real case study configurations in Ghana, involving primary data collection, sustainability modelling and discussion of the techno-economic feasibility results with policy makers and practitioners. The first configuration consists in decentralised power generation using crop residues from clustered smallholder farms in 14 districts in Ghana; the number of clustered farms, reference residue yields, and residue densities are determined to assess the distances within which it would be feasible to supply feedstock to biomass power plants. The findings show that a minimum of 22 to 54 larger (10 ha) farms would need to be clustered to enable an economically viable biomass supply to a 1000 kWe plant. Financial analyses indicate that such investment would not be viable under the current renewable feed-in-tariff rates in Ghana; increased tariff by 25% or subsidies from a minimum 30% of investment cost are needed to ensure viability using internal rate of return as an indicator. Carbon finance options are also discussed. The second configuration focuses on co- and tri-generation from clustered crop residues. Techno-economic results show that 600 kW and 1 MW biomass fuelled plants to generate power, heating (for cassava or maize drying) and cooling (to refrigerate tomatoes) are feasible, considering a minimum 20% yearly profit for investors’ equity. Additional income between 29 and 64 US $/tonne of crop residue would be possible for farmers if a minimum of 60% of the heat produced can be traded. The consideration of carbon financing under the most common traded prices has little impact on the project results; if more favourable schemes (like the Swedish carbon tax) are considered, the viability of co- and tri-generation plants run on agro residue can be possible even with a low level of residual heat sales. The third configuration analyses minigrid electricity generation and services based on biomass gasification in five Ghanaian communities. Results show that the projected electricity demand compares favourably with the potential supply from available crop residues. Project financing via 100% private funding would not be viable under current national uniform tariffs; however, by applying an end-user tariff equal to the current expenditure on electricity-equivalent uses in the communities, a subsidy of about 35% on initial investment would enable a private entrepreneur an internal rate of return of 15%, whereas a 60% subsidy could enable internal rate of return of 25%. The outcomes of this research have triggered the interest of Ghanaian and international policy makers, developers and private investors.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The need to minimize the impacts caused by disasters, and the solid waste generated, motivated the development of methods and practices for the management of disaster residues all over the world. Orbital remote sensing platforms and manned aircraft have been used in the management of disasters and their residues, even though it restricts them to the most extreme cases. The technological development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), especially low-cost commercial civil models, and the formulation of legislation that deals with their use, has made their application viable in different areas, including precision mapping. In order to analyze the applicability of these platforms in aid of the diagnosis of disaster waste generation, two sets of photographs previously obtained with an \"off the shelf\" UAV were selected. Then, the processing of these data in PhotoScan was carried out, aiming at the generation of informative maps. It was sought to analyze the capacity of identification, quantification and characterization of the solid residues disposed in the mapped areas. Legal, economic and technical aspects associated to the use of the tool were contemplated, in order to better base the applicability on the question. The results indicated relevant potential of identification and quantification of the residues found, and some limitations in their capacity of characterization. The current legislation, and the economic and technical aspects raised favor the use of commercial mini-VANT for the proposed use, even though in a limited way to disasters where the affected extension is not too extensive. The observance of good practices in the choice of equipment, in the planning and execution of its execution are fundamental for the generation of informative maps containing the positioning, the estimated volume and the estimated composition of the amounts of residues found.

Abstract:
This portfolio comprises of three papers: a systematic review, an empirical study and a critical evaluation of the research process. Systematic Review: The systematic review explored the influence of psychological flexibility on physical and psychosocial functioning in adults living with chronic pain. All studies revealed psychological flexibility or individual facets of the flexibility model improved daily functioning; including change in pain-related distress; depression-related interference; psychosocial functioning and in two cases improved physical health. There is some evidence that these effects are sustained over time. Proposals for further investigations into psychological flexibility are offered, in light of the methodological limitations associated with included articles. Empirical Study: This study aimed to explore stroke survivor’s experiences of an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) group and the elements that supported them in adjusting to stroke limitations. Thirteen participants with varying residual stroke disabilities were interviewed; responses were analysed using Grounded Theory. Central to participant’s experiences was a concern of needing to accept a changed reality following stroke. Six core categories emerged from the data around processes that help facilitate movement towards improved acceptance. This intervention was found to support most stroke survivors with adjustment; although further replication and extension of this study is warranted due to certain methodological limitations. Implications for clinical practice and service development are considered. Critical Evaluation: Critical appraisal and reflections are offered on the research process.

The technological and economic development growing converge to the necessity of create increasingly efficient materials, which seek to combine high performance and low cost. The composites appear as solution to substitute conventional materials, because they are developed for specific applications and may have desired characteristics. Hybrid fabrics applied to fibrous composites, if adequately designed, allow an even greater improvement in efficiency, since, unlike conventional fabrics, these combine different fibers with different load-dependent alignment and can obtain a more efficient material. In this work, analyzes were carried out with the aim of studying the behavior of a composite lamina reinforced by bi - directional (glass/carbon) hybrid fabric in presence of geometric discontinuities. In order to carry out this study, the composite material was fabricated from the manual molding process (hand-lay up). From the tests performed, according to ASTM standards, the characteristics and properties of the material were obtained (mass and volume percentages of fibers, stressstrain curve, ultimate strength and modulus of elasticity). Configurations were made with fibers aligned in the main directions (0? and 90?) and at angles (30?, 45? and 60?). The composite lamina had a total mass percentage of fibers of 38.98%, being 19.49% of glass fiber and 19.49% of carbon fiber. For the volumetric percentage, the following results were obtained: 10.91% of glass fiber and 14.88% of carbon fiber. From the results obtained in the stress tests it was noted that the materials with angled fibers have lower resistance than those with alignment in the main direction and at the same time they presented greater stretches. The residual strength presented similar results having values around 0.774, except for the material with 30? angulations', which presented a value of 0.676. Considering the found results, it is evident that the geometric discontinuity is a relevant factor in the strength of this composite and should be considered.

Abstract:
The acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most serious environmental problems in mining industry, because it affects the quality of groundwater and surface water, soil and, consequently, human health. This wastewater is formed by the oxidation of sulphide minerals when exposed to weathering, such as water and oxygen, thus causing acid that with the rain is loaded leaching the elements present in the area. This wastewater is characterized by its low concentration of organic material and low pH, high conductivity, high concentrations of sulphate and heavy metals. Conventionally in industry, the AMD is treated by the process of neutralization using calcium oxides, but an alternative to this process is the anaerobic treatment of the AMD in anaerobic reactors containing sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB), which reduce sulfate to sulfide consuming ions (H+), consequently there is an increased of the pH effluent and this sulfide reacts with the metals present in solution, precipitating in the form of metal sulfides. However, in addition to know how to proceed the treatment of wastewater in anaerobic reactors it is important to realize the modeling of data to understand in detail all the process, since the model allows us to clearly see the influence of one variable on the others. So, the main objective of this study was to model the experimental data from anaerobic treatment of the AMD in a batch reactor in bench scale, previously operated. It was proposed the model of Malthus-Monod-Fick to determine which groups of microorganisms were active in the system and also to evaluate whether there was any effect of internal mass transfer in the granule over the overall order of the reaction. And for this specifically, it was explored statistical tools little used in reactor modeling area, such as Maximum Likelihood Method and the Chi-square test of hypothesis, looking for this way to obtain the maximum information through the developed model. The proposed model was implemented in programming language using C ++ with the Root library, used mainly to process large volumes of data and perform statistical analysis, based on the simple premise that evaluates the performance of only one bacterial group working in the system to the most complex premise that takes into account restriction of substrate diffusion inside the granule. It was concluded in this study that more than one bacterial group acted in the system, the SRB and the fermentative bacteria (this group includes all kinds of microorganisms that compete with SRB by electron donor, ethanol), that a long the time the microbial community became more selected because the reactor operating conditions chosed to favor SRB and due to this selection was the growth of a biofilm which acted as a restriction to intern mass transfer. Finally, it has been proven mathematically, with statistical validation model, this mass diffusion restriction over time was responsible for a overall behavior of the first order even using values Monod coefficients small (KS e KA), typical a zero-order kinetics, in which the substrate consumption rate is independent of the concentration of this same substrate.

Abstract:

The qualitative and quantitative water scarcity associated with environmental impacts posed by wastewater has worsened the brazilian environmental scenario. Uranium mining is a prominent sector in Brazil context, since this country owns the sixth biggest uranium reserve in the world and there is large amount of accumulated tailings containing metallic, semi-metallic and radiotoxic ions. In general, biosorption has shown significant efficiency on effluent treatment, removing ions which even in low concentrations present toxicity. This work aimed to reduce the concentration of uranium by using biosorption in both cases, lab scale solutions and acid mining drainage effluent samples from Osamu Utsumi mine, wich belongs to Usinas Nucleares do Brasil. The selected biomasses used as biosorvent were banana peels, moringa’s seeds and coffee waste. Thermal decomposition, nitrogen adsorption porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy were performed for physical characterization. The studied variables for the batch tests as size and mass of biosorvent, temperature of tests, contact time, pH and initial concentration of solutions of uranium were defined by using design of experiments. From the tests carried out it was observed that the biomasses with a higher surface area and smaller pore volume resulted in higher removal efficiency values, with an ascending order of these parameters: banana peels

Abstract:
Due to the increasing usage of Sn in different electronics, such as solders and in touchscreens, together with Boliden Rönnskärs increased intake of electronic waste as a secondaryraw material, a Zn-containing product called Zn-clinker has increasing amounts of Sn. TheZn-clinker is shipped to Boliden Zn-smelter in Odda, where the Zn-clinker is mixed in withcalcine (roasted concentrate) and leached in several steps. Since Zn-clinker is a product froma halogen removal in a clinker-furnace, the feed material (Mixed Oxide), for this furnace, wasalso investigated since there are plans to replace clinkering with soda-washing in the future. Most of the Sn ends up in the leaching residue which then is deposited in the mountaincaverns close by the Boliden Odda smelter. Boliden is studying the possibility to recoverPb/Ag and Sn content from the leaching residue and create a valuable by-product. Bystudying how the leaching of Sn behaves, together with a characterization of the materials, thefollowing question should be answered: “During which sulphuric acid leaching conditions, ofZn-clinker and Mixed Oxide, is the leaching of Sn minimized?” The leaching results for Zn-clinker showed that 8-10% Sn will leach out, despite changingtemperature, redox potential, time and pH. A characterization of the material with SEM-EDSand XRD-analysis was also conducted to see if Sn could be identified in any phases in thematerials. The studies provided enough evidence that Zn2SnO4 could be concluded to be themain phase in the leaching residue for Zn-clinker, a form that would not leach underconditions presented in this project. However, 8-10% of the Sn will come together with Feand when Fe leach out, so does Sn. The leaching results for Mixed Oxide pointed towards that different phases from them foundin Zn-clinker was present. Sn losses varied between 10-20% but raised to 47% whentemperature was changed to 80 °C during leaching. The SEM-EDS analysis showed that theidentified Sn-phases contained more Sn than in Zn-clinker and together with the leachingresults, a conclusion that Sn would mainly be found as SnO2 or SnO in the Mixed Oxide, butthere is still uncertainty about the distributions of these forms. Unfortunately half of the As leached out during the soda-washing for Mixed Oxide, creating aleachate with Cl, F and As that need to be taken care of. This could be challenging andpresenting a costly side-project for the route different from the Zn-clinker route used today.Another observation was that PbCO3 formed during the soda-washing, a phase that willconsume more sulphuric acid during leaching.

Abstract:
Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem in mining industries because of the low pH, high levels of sulfate and dissolved metals present in this wastewater. Biological AMD treatment have been used instead of the traditional method, due to high efficiency obtained in these bioreactors, which promote the sulfate reduction into sulfide by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) in the presence of organic matter and anaerobic conditions. An alternative for the biological treatment of AMD consists on the bioremediation using autochthonous SRB that guarantees environmental safety, cost effective and better adaptability. This work studied the potential of autochthonous SRB to sulfate removal in batch anaerobic reactors comparing two inoculum sources. An autochthonous (AUT) biomass, derived from enrichment culture of AMD sediments and, a non-autochthonous (NON-AUT), from a pre-acclimated sludge from a stable sufidogenic reactor adapted with lactate as carbon source, were tested. The sulfate reduction using cost effective electron donors (ethanol and formate) and the acidity resistance of AUT inoculum was also verified. Results showed a maximum sulfate removal of 57% for AUT and 62% for NON-AUT. Phylogenetic study of SRB group using sequencing of dsrB DGGE excised bands revealed the presence of Desulfotomaculum-related bacteria in AUT community, while Desulfovibrio was the predominant genus found in NON-AUT-derived community. When ethanol was used as carbon source, a sulfate reduction of 46% was found and 35% for formate, indicating that at neutral conditions, ethanol is the most viable alternative as carbon source for the enrichment process. At low pH, sulfate reduction still occurred, indicating that these microorganisms were resistants to acidic conditions. However the removal efficiency was reduced when lactate (only 30% on pH close to 3) and ethanol (only 18% on pH close to 5) were used as electron donors. When formate was the carbon source, the sulfate removal efficiency was maintained closely to 38% with pH reduction to 3 and 4, showing that at these conditions, formate is the best carbon source for SRB enrichment. Thus, AUT culture could be used for local AMD decontamination in substitution of pre-acclimated sludge from sulfidogenic reactors.

Abstract:
The thixoforging process is an innovative forming process for the manufacturing ofcomplex parts in the semi-solid state, in fewer forming steps and with a decreased formingforce. The objective of this work is to characterize the microstructure of different steel grades ateach step of the thixoforging process in order to better understand the influence of the processparameters and the mechanisms of deformation, as the microstructure of the material in thesemi-solid state, especially the volume fraction of liquid, is very important. Several 2D and 3Dtechniques (SEM-EDS analyses, CSLM, X-ray microtomography) have been used to evaluatethe liquid fraction of various steel grades (M2, C38LTT and 100Cr6). The results for M2 steelshow a good agreement between 2D SEM - EDS observations and 3D X-ray microtomographyafter quenching, which proves that both techniques are efficient in characterizing high-alloyedsteels in the semi-solid state. The CSLM technique is used to observe the microstructuredirectly at high temperature, with the apparition of liquid and the solidification. Thixoforgingexperiments are finally performed in order to study the influence of the process parameters onthe microstructure: the final part geometry, the material flow etc. After analyzing themicrostructure of the thixoforged parts, some mechanisms of material flow are proposed. Moreover, by comparing the results between the thixoforging experiments and the hot forgingsimulations, it is found that the material flow is very different from that of hot forging process, which results from the material behavior. The latter is very sensitive to the process parameters;an accurate process control is necessary

This thesis is an overview of the processes and procedures used in the production of my artistic practice. In my work, I explore notions such as the ambiguity of the photographic image, what constitutes an image or object as photographic, and the unexplored possibilities of the medium through surface and mark making. In addition, I draw inspiration from artists Wolfgang Tillmans, William Henry Fox Talbot, and Marco Breuer as entrance points to my conceptual interests. For viewers, my work generates an internal dialogue about the limits of the photographic medium.

Abstract:
Most of glass products on the market come from a high-temperature forming operation, followed by a controlled cooling phase to remove (annealed glass) or generate (tempered glass) residual stresses. Since the mechanical behaviour of the glass is highly thermo-dependent, temperature control is a determining factor for the success of the manufacturing process. During numerical simulations, for this semi-transparent medium, heat exchanges by conduction and radiation have to be considered. In this work, the resolution of the ETR (radiative transfer Equation) is carried out using the "P1 method" and the "Back Ray tracing" (BRT). The two developed codes were validated by the comparative study with the temperature and residual stresses data from the literature on cooling in the thickness of the glass subject to various conditions in natural and forced convection. An experimentation which consists in cooling a glass disk on a metal support was developed in order to compare the temperatures and stresses generated by the testing and by the modelling resulting from the thermomechanical coupling with the two codes P1 and BRT. In a more original way, the BRT method was extended to revolving geometries. A first approach was to study the creep of a glass gob and to analyze the influence of the choice of the ETR's resolution model on the temperatures and geometries during the forming

Abstract:

Abstract:
The topic of this study was to mechanically characterize in nanoindentation and nanoscratch thin polymers layers. The goal is to improve the understanding of thin polymer layer elastic behavior laid on hard substrate. Tests in nanoindentation and nanoscratch were done on thin polymer films laid on different substrates. A rheologic model was used in order to extract the film elastic properties from the measured value linked to {film+substrate}. A specific behavior of thin polymer film has been identified: the anvil effect. In indentation, it is observed in two different ways : increase of the conservation film modulus with the hardness, linked to the film hardening, and decrease of the loss tangent with the hardness, which is explained by increasing the vitreous transition temperature. In scratch test, this effect is related to the increase of the film mechanical properties. Nanoindentation tests have highlighted residual stresses, mainly thermal driven. A new methodology to characterize those residual stresses for a thin polymer film was presented. An interpretation of the anvil effect is proposed. This effect is linked to thin layer pressurized, confined between diamond indenter and hard substrate. Its mechanical properties grow with hydrostatic pressure. This phenomenon is greater for thin layers (< 50μm) with lower mechanical properties than those of the substrate. A logarithmic type evolution law is proposed. A temperature study show isothermal curves of the conservation modulus with the pressure are shifted. The anvil effect can be described by a unic curve, applying additive constants determined at a given reference temperature. It is the same for the film loss tangent. Moreover, the consequences of the anvil effect on the use properties of polymer coating are analyzed: scratch resistance and the adhesion to substrate. A fundamental application of thin film was studied multilayer coatings. It seems that anvil effect is a phenomenon to consider for improvement of mono or multilayer coating scratch resistance. The results obtained on thin layers allow to choose two mix of basecoat and topcoat in order to have an improved bilayer. We have demonstrated that a basecoat between the topcoat and the hard substrate allow an improved scratch resistance of the final coating

Abstract:
Penning processes are widely used in industries to apply compressive residual stresses into the most solicited part of mechanical pieces. In that way, the compressive residual stresses limit the priming and the propagation of micro-cracks in the material. This increases significantly the lifespan of the treated mechanical piece under fatigue stresses. These existing peening processes have proved their efficiency and also their limitations and weaknesses. The main recurrent defaults are a shallow depth of treatment, a degradation of the surface condition, a random control of the treatment, a material contamination, etc. These problems have led towards the development of news innovative peening processes which allow better performance avoiding some previous defaults briefly evoked. Among these news processes, the electromagnetic peening process seems especially interesting. This process uses high energy electromagnetic fields to induce Lorentz forces into a metallic piece and thus residual stresses. Actually, there is not much information about this process in the literature and no prototype was ever built. The work of this thesis is dedicated to development and realization of an electromagnetic peening prototype. The first chapter of this thesis adresses the state of the art of major peening processes actually in industrial use. Next, the electromagnetic peening process, or EMP process, is described and the electrical needs are exposed. A second state of the art is made about the technological solutions to respond to the EMP needs. The second chapter is about the conception of the EMP prototype with the electrical structure adopted in the previous chapter. The first step is about the inductor sizing to generate an electromagnetic field sufficient enough for a peening application. Next, the storage system is designed depending on the inductor parameters and finally the closing switch is created considering the electrical parameters used for the EMP process. To validate the previous results, a 3D electromagnetic simulation is done. The prototype assembly is presented in the third chapter and also the first experimental test on the EMP prototype. To begin with, an aluminium alloy with low yield strength is selected to be treated. Two different samples forms are used, a thin one, to realize a similar test to the Almen test and thick one to check the EMP depth of treatment. A 3D multiphysics simulation of these experiments is made and these numeric results are next correlated to the experimental ones. In the fourth chapter, an exploratory study is realized on the effects of the residual stresses on magnetic properties of ferromagnetic material, the mumetal

Abstract:
The multiple constant multiplication (MCM) operation is a fundamental operation in digital signal processing (DSP) and digital image processing (DIP). Examples of the MCM are in finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, matrix multiplication, and transforms. The aim of this work is minimizing the complexity of the MCM operation using common subexpression elimination (CSE) technique and redundant number representations. The CSE technique searches and eliminates common digit patterns (subexpressions) among MCM coefficients. More common subexpressions can be found by representing the MCM coefficients using redundant number representations. A CSE algorithm is proposed that works on a type of redundant numbers called the zero-dominant set (ZDS). The ZDS is an extension over the representations of minimum number of non-zero digits called minimum Hamming weight (MHW). Using the ZDS improves CSE algorithms' performance as compared with using the MHW representations. The disadvantage of using the ZDS is it increases the possibility of overlapping patterns (digit collisions). In this case, one or more digits are shared between a number of patterns. Eliminating a pattern results in losing other patterns because of eliminating the common digits. A pattern preservation algorithm (PPA) is developed to resolve the overlapping patterns in the representations. A tree and graph encoders are proposed to generate a larger space of number representations. The algorithms generate redundant representations of a value for a given digit set, radix, and wordlength. The tree encoder is modified to search for common subexpressions simultaneously with generating of the representation tree. A complexity measure is proposed to compare between the subexpressions at each node. The algorithm terminates generating the rest of the representation tree when it finds subexpressions with maximum sharing. This reduces the search space while minimizes the hardware complexity. A combinatoric model of the MCM problem is proposed in this work. The model is obtained by enumerating all the possible solutions of the MCM that resemble a graph called the demand graph. Arc routing on this graph gives the solutions of the MCM problem. A similar arc routing is found in the capacitated arc routing such as the winter salting problem. Ant colony optimization (ACO) meta-heuristics is proposed to traverse the demand graph. The ACO is simulated on a PC using Python programming language. This is to verify the model correctness and the work of the ACO. A parallel simulation of the ACO is carried out on a multi-core super computer using C++ boost graph library.

Abstract:
This item is only available electronically.
The Brukunga Mine is located approximately 50 km east-south-east of Adelaide and was established in 1952 as a source of sulfur for superphosphate. Due to low sulfur prices, the mine was closed in 1972 and since that time has been a source of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), which has in turn had a dramatic effect of the local and downstream environments. Investigations into the waste dump and mine bench rocks indicate that large quantities of sulfides (up to 22%) are present. Oxidation of sulfides, catalysed by bacteria, quickly form a strongly acidic environment. The lack of significant quantities of rapid neutralising minerals, such as calcite, accentuates and enhances these low pH conditions. Resultant large quantities of acid and heavy metals produced through this oxidation are subsequently released into the surroundings. The contamination is enhanced by the release of lithophile elements formed during slow aluminosilicate neutralisation reactions that are taking place. The pollutants are released into Dawesley Creek, a tributary of the Bremer River, which flows through the mine site. The tailings also add to the acidity problems through similar processes, but here sulfide quantities are much lower. A large accumulation of soluble salts has developed at depth and their location away from the zone of active oxidation indicates that oxidation has not been consistent through time. The development of a cemented layer region at 1-1.4m depth within the tailings is thought to be the preliminary stages of a hardpan. Calculations indicate that the formation of the cemented region is reducing the movement of the oxidation front and therefore the oxidation rate. Combining the two main observations suggests that the oxidation of the tailings is decreasing with time, through a self sealing action. The current environmental hazard the tailings represents is significant. The groundwater movement through the tailings represents a major flushing effect, allowing water with high quantities of ferrous iron to be transported to the dam wall where it is readily oxidised. This, combined, with oxygen from the atmosphere, causes the rapid oxidation of the rocks which make up the dam wall, and represents a major problem. A mechanism to reduce the ground water through-flow needs to be considered.

Doutoramento em Engenharia do Ambiente - Instituto Superior de Agronomia
In this thesis, the effects of different organic matrices, namely (i) compost from unsorted municipal solid waste (MSWC), (ii) compost from garden residues (GWC), and sewage sludge (SS), have been assessed while these amendments were used as immobilizing agents in aided phytostabilization of a highly acidic soil, heavily contaminated by metals, as a consequence of previous mining activities (Aljustrel mine, SW Portugal, western sector of the Iberian Pyrite Belt). Results obtained in this study underlined the importance of an integrated evaluation of soil quality following remediation processes. Actually, despite the ability to correct soil acidity, to immobilize trace metals (Cu, Pb and Zn), and to improve soil nutritional and biochemical features, SS - when used at 100 Mg ha-1 - led to toxicity of soil leachate towards Vibrio fischeri, reduced soil cellulase activity, and exerted toxic effects towards perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). On the other hand, the application of GWC, a compost low in content of both salinity and heavy metals, and without detectable toxicity when evaluated with a battery of bioassays, did not stimulate significantly either the growth of L. perenne or the soil enzymatic activities due to its scarce ability in correcting soil acidity and supplying macronutrients. Surprisingly, MSWC applied at 50 Mg ha-1, with or without liming, was the most effective organic residue to be used in the immobilization of metals, in this type of mine contaminated soil.

Collister, Grant. "The environmental impact of the Robinson Deep mine residue deposit, Johannesburg." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/462.

Full text
Abstract:
The environmental impact of the Robinson Deep mine residue deposit in Johannesburg was assessed by evaluating the water chemistry and surface precipitates, thereby identifying the processes responsible for forming the contamination footprint. Precipitates were compared to a documented paragenetic sequence of mineral formation associated with sulphide rich mine waste. PHREEQC, a geochemical modelling tool, was utilized to predict the formation of precipitates from evaporation ponds. The chemistry of the leachate was analysed and compared to water quality standards in order to determine the possible environmental impact. The chemistry of the water emanating from the mine residue deposit reveals that an Fe-SO4 dominant chemistry persists, this is consistent with acid mine drainage environments. The most toxic cations and anions contained in the water are Fe, Al, Mn, Ca, As, Mg, Cu, Zn, Pb and SO . It is predicted that the impact of toxic metals identified in the water decreases further from the mine residue deposit due to dilution and co-precipitation with different mineral phases such as goethite. Precipitates identified include jarosite group minerals, goethite, melanterite, copiapite, Mg-copiapite, halotrichite, pickeringite, gypsum and alunogen. These secondary minerals may be used as indicator minerals of acid mine drainage. Assessment and prediction of the stage of contamination and possible environmental impact, may, therefore be pursued when comparing the indicator minerals to predicted paragenetic sequences. For example, the precipitation of melanterite is consistent with an early stage of acid mine drainage development. The presence of melanterite thus suggests that oxidation of sulphides is an ongoing process on the Robinson Deep mine residue deposit. Evaporation of water in the evaporation ponds aids in increasing the concentration, hence allowing the predominant precipitation of jarosite group minerals. Alternatively, rainfall dilutes the water allowing dissolution of minerals located on the banks of the evaporation ponds to predominate. This mechanism of precipitation and dissolution is seasonal; formation of precipitates predominates during the dry season, while dissolution is most prominent during the wet season. The development of hardpans indicates that the main mechanism of formation of the associated phases is through capillary action at the sediment surface. Leaching of Fe2+-rich water from the mine residue deposit containment area is indicated by the presence of copiapite, while jarosite and goethite formation tend to form part of a hardpan layer. Goethite is an indication of a late stage mineral predominant at lower sulphate and higher pH conditions. Results of predicted formation of precipitates by PHREEQC are not in very good agreement with actual field observations. This is mainly due to the lack of thermodynamic data for many of the sulphate minerals observed. Hence, precipitates associated with acid mine drainage may be utilized as indicator minerals. Consequently, there identification may facilitate in environmental monitoring and risk assessment.

Abstract:
When mining companies extract minerals from the earth, they leave huge deposits of soil and ore next to the mining site. These deposits are commonly known as tailings. In most instances, tailings contain a considerable amount of valuable mineral resources which cannot be exploited because of a lack of appropriate equipment, or as a result of economic non-viability. However, many mining companies choose to keep and maintain these tailings, in the hope that such minerals can later be exploited when time or technology allows for this. Under common-law the owner of a property is considered to also own any minerals contained on the property, in terms of the principle of cuius est solum. In South African law, however, a practice evolved whereby owners of minerals separated rights to minerals from the surface rights on the property. This created a mining right which was independent from the land and could be transferred to third parties, often in return for compensation. Under the Minerals Act of 1991 the owner of a mining right over a property (be that the owner of the property or a third-party mining right holder) also held the mining right to tailings which were created as a result of mining activities under the right. Thus, if a mining company performed mining activities on a property, the company was also free to exploit the tailings which were left next to its mine, regardless of whether the dump had remained there for a long period of time. Owing to South Africa's long history of mining, some tailings are over a century old and resemble small mountains rather than mining deposits. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act of 2002 changed the entire mineral legislative regime in South Africa. Whereas owners of land were previously free to separate and sell their rights to minerals to anyone they wished, the MPRDA placed the country‟s mineral and petroleum resources under the state's "custodianship." Where the law talks about custodianship, however, it supposedly refers only to minerals that have not yet been extracted from the earth. It is well established in South African law that, once a mineral is extracted, it becomes the movable property of the person who extracted it – in other words, that of the mining company. Does this mean that minerals in tailings also fall under the state's custodianship? The Free State High Court did not think so. In the case of De Beers v Ataqua it held that, in terms of the common law principles of acquisition by way of attachment, tailings are clearly movable property and therefore belong to the mining company who created them. For the MPRDA to hold otherwise would amount to expropriation. The state did not wish for some mining activities to be regulated by a different set of legislation, so it amended the MPRDA to try and define "residue deposits" (the name by which the MPRDA calls tailings) more clearly. However, due to the legislature's unfortunate choice of wording, tailings created before the enactment of the MPRDA are still, strictly speaking, not regulated by that Act. So the legislature proposed another amendment to the Act, this time making sure that any historical mine dump created at any point in South Africa's history are placed under the Act's regime. The subject matter of this study is whether the above amendments to the MPRDA could be considered to be expropriation. For background purposes, a brief overview of the Ataqua decision as well as the subsequent amendments to the MPRDA will be given. Then the history of mining legislation and the development of a separate mining right will be summarised. The reason for this summary is to establish whether, in terms of constitutional litigation, a clear right has been established for purposes of protection under section 25 of the Constitution. The last phase of the study will look at the particular characteristics of expropriation and ask the question whether acquisition of a right by the state is always a fundamental requirement for expropriation to take place. It is submitted that the destruction of an entire class of property by way of legislation, amounts to so-called "institutional expropriation," which is subject to compensation in terms of section 25.
