Abstract:
AbstractThe fundamental problem of dislocations in incompatible isotropic strain gradient elasticity theory of Mindlin type, unsolved for more than half a century, is solved in this work. Incompatible strain gradient elasticity of Mindlin type is the generalization of Mindlin’s compatible strain gradient elasticity including plastic fields providing in this way a proper eigenstrain framework for the study of defects like dislocations. Exact analytical solutions for the displacement fields, elastic distortions, Cauchy stresses, plastic distortions and dislocation densities of screw and edge dislocations are derived. For the numerical analysis of the dislocation fields, elastic constants and gradient elastic constants have been used taken from ab initio DFT calculations. The displacement, elastic distortion, plastic distortion and Cauchy stress fields of screw and edge dislocations are non-singular, finite, and smooth. The dislocation fields of a screw dislocation depend on one characteristic length, whereas the dislocation fields of an edge dislocation depend on up to three characteristic lengths. For a screw dislocation, the dislocation fields obtained in incompatible strain gradient elasticity of Mindlin type agree with the corresponding ones in simplified incompatible strain gradient elasticity. In the case of an edge dislocation, the dislocation fields obtained in incompatible strain gradient elasticity of Mindlin type are depicted more realistic than the corresponding ones in simplified incompatible strain gradient elasticity. Among others, the Cauchy stress of an edge dislocation obtained in incompatible isotropic strain gradient elasticity of Mindlin type looks more physical in the dislocation core region than the Cauchy stress obtained in simplified incompatible strain gradient elasticity and is in good agreement with the stress fields of an edge dislocation computed in atomistic simulations. Moreover, it is shown that the shape of the dislocation core of an edge dislocation has a more realistic asymmetric form due to its inherent asymmetry in incompatible isotropic strain gradient elasticity of Mindlin type than the dislocation core possessing a cylindrical symmetry in simplified incompatible strain gradient elasticity. It is revealed that the considered theory with the incorporation of three characteristic lengths offers a more realistic description of an edge dislocation than the simplified incompatible strain gradient elasticity with only one characteristic length.

Abstract:
This paper presents the first-known exact solutions for the vibration of multi-span rectangular Mindlin plates with two opposite edges simply supported. The Levy type solution method and the state-space technique are employed to develop an analytical approach to deal with the vibration of rectangular Mindlin plates of multiple spans. Exact vibration frequencies are obtained for two-span square Mindlin plates with varying span ratios and two-, three- and four-equal-span rectangular Mindlin plates. The influence of the span ratios, the number of spans and plate boundary conditions on the vibration behavior of square and rectangular Mindlin plates is examined. The presented exact vibration results may serve as benchmark solutions for such plates.

Abstract:
The method of superposition is further developed to analyze free flexural vibration of clamped rectangular Mindlin plates. Comparison of results given by Mindlin’s theory of plates with those previously obtained by Reissner’s theory has shown that the rotatory inertia does not significantly affect plate flexural vibration. Accurate eigenvalues are presented for a number of values of plate aspect ratio along with two representative values of thickness ratio.

Abstract:
A new Hermitian Mindlin plate wavelet element is proposed. The two-dimensional Hermitian cubic spline interpolation wavelet is substituted into finite element functions to construct frequency response function (FRF). It uses a system’s FRF and response spectrums to calculate load spectrums and then derives loads in the time domain via the inverse fast Fourier transform. By simulating different excitation cases, Hermitian cubic spline wavelets on the interval (HCSWI) finite elements are used to reverse load identification in the Mindlin plate. The singular value decomposition (SVD) method is adopted to solve the ill-posed inverse problem. Compared with ANSYS results, HCSWI Mindlin plate element can accurately identify the applied load. Numerical results show that the algorithm of HCSWI Mindlin plate element is effective. The accuracy of HCSWI can be verified by comparing the FRF of HCSWI and ANSYS elements with the experiment data. The experiment proves that the load identification of HCSWI Mindlin plate is effective and precise by using the FRF and response spectrums to calculate the loads.

Abstract:
In this study, a dynamic Mindlin–Reissner-type plate is developed based on a simplified version of Mindlin’s form-II first-strain gradient elasticity theory. The governing equations of motion and the corresponding boundary conditions are derived using the general virtual work variational principle. The presented model contains, apart from the two classical Lame constants, one additional microstructure material parameter g for the static case and one micro-inertia parameter h for the dynamic case. The formal reduction of this model to a Kirchhoff-type plate model is also presented. Upon diminishing the microstructure parameters g and h, the classical Mindlin–Reissner and Kirchhoff plate theories are derived. Three points distinguish the present work from other similar published in the literature. First, the plane stress assumption, fundamental for the development of plate theories, is expressed by the vanishing of the z-component of the generalized true traction vector and not merely by the zz-component of the Cauchy stress tensor. Second, micro-inertia terms are included in the expression of the kinetic energy of the model. Finally, the detailed structure of classical and non-classical boundary conditions is presented for both Mindlin–Reissner and Kirchhoff micro-plates. An example of a simply supported rectangular plate is used to illustrate the proposed model and to compare it with results from the literature. The numerical results reveal the significance of the strain gradient effect on the bending and free vibration response of the micro-plate, when the plate thickness is at the micron-scale; in comparison to the classical theories for Mindlin–Reissner and Kirchhoff plates, the deflections, the rotations, and the shear-thickness frequencies are smaller, while the fundamental flexural frequency is higher. It is also observed that the micro-inertia effect should not be ignored in estimating the fundamental frequencies of micro-plates, primarily for thick plates, when plate thickness is at the micron scale (strain gradient effect).

Abstract:
The present work of the thesis deals with the theoretical formulation and the evaluation of a new first order finite element for multilayered/sandwich plates and shells. It’s based on a displacement variational model that we consider as discrete, insofar as we introduce kinematic and mechanical hypothesises in a discrete manner. This model, labelled DDM (Discrete Displacement Mindlin), leads to a finite element which is geometrically simple (4 node) and efficient, owing to the linearity of bending curvatures obtained from a quadratic approximation of the normal rotations to the plate mid-surface. The new element takes into account the transverse shear effects along thickness direction and gives thin plate results when the ratio L/h (Length/ thickness) becomes big. It has been successfully validated across some known testing problems, from thin to thick laminated and sandwich

The considered circular plate is of several step-wise variation in thickness in the radial direction. The Mindlin first order shear deformable plate theory is employed to derive the governing differential equations for the annular and circular segments. The exact solutions to these differential equations may be expressed in terms of the Bessel functions of the first and second kinds and the modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds. The governing homogenous system of equations is assembled by implementing the essential and natural boundary conditions and the segment interface conditions. Vibration solutions are presented for circular Mindlin plates of different edge support conditions and various combinations of step-wise thickness variations. This thesis is concerned with the dynamics of Mindlin-Timoshenko system for beams and plates. We study issues relating to the asymptotic limit in relation to the parameters and decay rates. In the context of asymptotic limit, as the main result, we present a positive response to the conjecture made by Lagnese and Lions in 1988, where the Von-Kármán model is obtained as singular limit when k tends to infinity, the Mindlin-Timoshenko system. Introducing appropriate damping mechanisms (internal and boundary), we also show that the energy of solutions for the Mindlin-Timoshenko system has decay properties exponential and polynomial, with respect to the parameters.

Abstract:
Implicit boundary method enables the use of background mesh to perform finite element analysis while using solid models to represent the geometry. This approach has been used in the past to model 2D and 3D structures. Thin plate or shell-like structures are more challenging to model. In this paper, the implicit boundary method is shown to be effective for plate elements modeled using Reissner-Mindlin plate theory. This plate element uses a mixed formulation and discrete collocation of shear stress field to avoid shear locking. The trial and test functions are constructed by utilizing approximate step functions such that the boundary conditions are guaranteed to be satisfied. The incompatibility of discrete collocation with implicit boundary approach is overcome by using irreducible weak form for computing the stiffness associated with essential boundary conditions. A family of Reissner-Mindlin plate elements is presented and evaluated in this paper using several benchmark problems to test their validity and robustness.

Abstract:
This paper shows that the Mindlin problem involving two spheres in contact under the action of oscillating tangential force can lead to the account of static-kinetic friction transition. In Mindlin’s problem two spheres experience partial slip as a result of application of oscillating tangential load. When the problem is extended to multi-sphere contact, i.e. two rough surfaces, the application of tangential oscillating load results in partial slip for some asperity contacts while others experience full slip. Increase in the amplitude of the oscillating tangential force results in more contacts experiencing full slip, thereby decreasing the number of contacts in parial slip. Constitutive relation proposed by Mindlin at small scale, governing asperity interaction, is used to obtain the large scale slip function through a statistical summation of asperity scale events. The slip function establishes the fraction of asperity contact in full slip. The complement of the slip parameter is a fraction of asperities in partial slip. Through slip function it is shown that it is possible to define a slip condition for the entire surface. The derivation of the slip function allows the account of transition between static friction and kinetic friction.

Abstract:
An improved Reissner-Mindlin theory for composite laminates without invoking ad hoc kinematic assumptions is constructed using the variational-asymptotic method. Instead of assuming a priori the distribution of three-dimensional displacements in terms of two-dimensional plate displacements as what is usually done in typical plate theories, an exact intrinsic formulation has been achieved by introducing unknown three-dimensional warping functions. Then the variational-asymptotic method is applied to systematically decouple the original three-dimensional problem into a one-dimensional through-the-thickness analysis and a two-dimensional plate analysis. The resulting theory is an equivalent single-layer Reissner-Mindlin theory with an excellent accuracy comparable to that of higher-order, layerwise theories. The present work is extended from the previous theory developed by the writer and his co-workers with two sizable contributions: (a) six more constants (33 in total) are introduced to allow maximum freedom to transform the asymptotically correct energy into a Reissner-Mindlin model; and (b) the semi-definite programming technique is used to seek the optimum Reissner-Mindlin model. Furthermore, it is proved the first time that the recovered three-dimensional quantities exactly satisfy the continuity conditions on the interface between different layers and traction boundary conditions on the bottom and top surfaces. It is also shown that that two of the equilibrium equations of three-dimensional elasticity can be satisfied asymptotically, and the third one can be satisfied approximately so that the difference between the Reissner-Mindlin model and the second order asymptotical energy can be minimized. Numerical examples are presented to compare with the exact solution as well as the classical lamination theory and first-order shear-deformation, demonstrating that the present theory has an excellent agreement with the exact solution.

Abstract:
Abstract An assumed-stress hybrid 4-node plate element is developed based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle modified with a generalized least-squares operator for accurate vibration and wave propagation response of Reissner-Mindlin plates. The least-squares operator is proportional to a weighted integral of a differential operator acting on the residual of the steady-state equations of motion for Reissner-Mindlin plates. Through judicious selection of the design parameters inherent in the least-squares modification, this formulation provides a consistent framework for enhancing the accuracy of mixed Reissner-Mindlin plate elements that have no shear locking or spurious modes. Improved methods are designed such that the complex wave-number finite element dispersion relations closely match the analytical relations for all wave angle directions. For uniform meshes, optimal methods are designed to achieve zero dispersion error along given wave directions. Comparisons of finite element dispersion relations demonstrate the superiority of the new hybrid least-squares plate element over the underlying hybrid element, and standard Galerkin elements based on selectively reduced integration. Numerical experiments validate these conclusions.

Abstract:
Abstract In the first part of this paper, it is demonstrated how the superposition of four judiciously selected forced vibration solutions to rectangular mindlin plate vibration problems permits the obtaining of an eigenvalue matrix from which the resonant frequencies of fully clamped mindlin plates can be extracted. Subsequently, it is shown how the same forced vibration solutions can be obtained much more efficiently by the Galerkin Method. After superposition of the latter solutions, it is shown how the same resonant frequencies are obtained. The vast advantages of exploiting this latter “Superposition-Galerkin” method are enumerated and discussed in detail.
