Abstract:

Abstract:
Both mindfulness and authentic leadership base themselves on self-awareness. Authentic leadership has positively predicted organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and mindfulness has been positively correlated to work engagement, which has shared positive relationships with OCB. Job demands (JD) have been shown to compromise work engagement. Using a sample of 134 MBA and undergraduate students, a longitudinal design evaluated the meditational role of authentic functioning (AF) between mindfulness and OCB and the moderating role of JD. Over the course of three months, three questionnaires were administered to measure mindfulness, AF, OCB, and JD. Despite the positive predictive relationship between mindfulness and AF, there was not a significant predictive relationship between AF and OCB or the predictor (i.e. mindfulness) and criterion (i.e. OCB) variables, so structural equation modeling could not reveal if AF mediates the relationship between mindfulness and OCB. These findings suggest that AF could be a characteristic mechanism of mindfulness that helps facilitate certain behaviors. Future practical implications could suggest the prosocial value of cultivating mindfulness and authentic leadership to promote overall organizational functioning.

Mindfulness may be described as a state of heightened present-moment awareness that we all experience to a greater of lesser extent. Enhancing this quality of awareness through training has shown to alleviate stress and promote mental and physical well-being and, as a consequence, the clinical application of mindfulness is gaining in popularity. Because of this, there is a growing need to understand how mindfulness were investigaged in a series of research studies in this thesis, by means of literature analysis, clinical intervention, functional brain imaging and brain-lesion methods. In Study One a total of 10 commonly proposed mechanisms of mindfulness were identified through a qualitive systematic analysis of the literature: self-regulation, exposure, cognitive flexibility, acceptance, disidentification, awareness/insight, reattribution, attention, metacognition, and relaxation. Mediation analyses in Study Two confirmed that acceptance and cognitive flexibility significantly mediated the relationship between mindfulness and reduced symptoms of stress and the acceptance significantly mediated the relationship between mindfulness and mood disturbance. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was employed in Study Three to further test these findings and state mindfulness shown to mediate midline cortical regions associated with interoception. The findings of Study Three suggest that mindfulness may be associated with positive outcomes through a process of disidentification; a process described as removing the 'self' in the experiencing of passing events. Damage to the midline cortical brain regions identified in Study Three, however, showed to have no significant effect on naturally-occurring mindfulness, according the results of a pilot brain-lesion investigation in Study Four. Based on the findings of the studies in this thesis, it is suggested that mindfulness may reduce vulnerability to stress and emotional distress through a meta-mechanism of disidentification and through more direct mechanisms: acceptance and cognitive flexibility. The collected evidence supports the application of mindfulness training as an intervention to advance affective and cognitive well-being. At a broader level, the findings also establish a firmer relationship between mental control and optimal mental functioning.

Abstract:
Literature is a deeply personal and interpersonal act from the author to the reader. In some way the author is attempting to capture their interpretation of space and time inside the vehicle of language. Through metaphor and enjambment, syntax and imagery, this thesis attempts to render the contemporary experience of the artist as he is grounded in location and interpretation. The lens used in inspecting the world is biological and philosophical, seeking and hiding from the truth. Nature and science are used as linking languages in the collections of poems, seeking to be united with emotion based in the bedrock of Kentucky. Poetry is ephemeral in its brevity, but concrete in the impressions it can leave with the reader. The author has attempted to render the facts as he observed them in language which is specifically universal. No one else could have participated in the experiment of research, but all are welcome to share in the observations. Kentucky is the pivotal element in this research. Experimentation was made with other locations, but the sense of place that can only be found in these hills provides the fertilizer for the elements of literary art to flourish. The author seeks to enrich the landscape that has created him, and to provide a snapshot of this land and its people.

Abstract:

This study was an experimental trial of a classroom-based intervention to influence mindfulness among MBA students at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MBA students at MIT Sloan and elsewhere are conditioned to look forward and reflect on the past only to the degree that it helps plan for the future. They are rarely taught to be aware of what is occurring in the current moment. Training students to be more mindful, that is better able to be aware of and to pay attention to present moment experience would contribute to the mission of MBA programs to create leaders by giving students meaningful insight into their own thoughts, feelings, and actions. Within the literatures of medicine, neuroscience, psychology, and education, investigators have found that mindfulness has been positively correlated with improved well-being, reduced stress, better decision-making and perspective-taking, as well as improved personal relationships (Brown and Ryan, 2003; Block-Lerner, Adair, Plumb, Rhatigan, & Orsillo, 2007; Dekeyser, Raes, Leijssen, Leysen, & Dewulf, 2008; De Dea Roglio & Light, 2009; Kabat-Zinn, 1994). While the potential benefits of mindfulness have been established in multiple fields, there is scant research on mindfulness and MBA students. This research study explored whether brief mindfulness meditation exercises, embedded in an existing course, would influence MBA students' levels of mindfulness as measured by the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) (Brown & Ryan, 2003). In the fall 2014 semester, a sample of 158 first-year MBA students from MIT Sloan participated in an experiment with modified randomization of a pre/post design. Data analysis revealed that participant scores on the MAAS decreased significantly from pretest to posttest, though less so in the treatment group. These findings suggest that the intervention was not robust enough to exert a positive influence on participants' levels of mindfulness in the graduate business school context. This research contributes to the literature by providing important information about the requisite exposure to and scalability of the intervention in research on mindfulness meditation in higher education

Abstract:
Mindfulness practice is used to treat mental and physical symptoms. The problem is that research on the long-term effects and the neural changes involved, correlated with well-being, are inconsistent. The purpose of this review is to create a deeper understanding of mindfulness and its neural correlates related to stress. In mindfulness, one can use focused attention meditation (FA), involving anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), prefrontal cortex (PFC), parietal areas, thalamus, visual cortex, intraparietal sulcus, and amygdala. In open monitoring meditation (OM), ACC, PFC, insula, somatosensory cortex, limbic areas and amygdala are involved. In exposure to a high amount of stress, the grey matter volume decreases in the hippocampus, PFC, and amygdala. Research has also shown that 19 000 hours of mindfulness practice increases activation in areas involved in FA and OM. This increased activation might also enhance the subject’s ability to control emotions. After 44 000 hours of meditation, areas involved in FA showed less activation which might imply that more hours of mindfulness practice involve less cognitive activity and a calmer state of mind. Regardless of hours spent on meditating, a decreased activation in the amygdala and ACC occurs, which correlates with less response towards negative stimuli. The neural changes involved in mindfulness practice was related to less experienced stress and enhanced psychological well-being. For future research, an investigation of the interaction between attentional networks and stress would be of relevance.

Abstract:
Mindfulness research has historically focused on individual benefits (e.g., Brown & Ryan, 2003), yet more recently also has considered relational outcomes influenced by mindfulness, such as romantic relationship quality (e.g., McGill, Adler-Baeder, & Rodriguez, 2015) and parent-child relationship quality (e.g., Coatsworth et al., 2016). Overall, mindfulness research has assessed global measures of mindfulness and does not consider the distinct elements of mindfulness and their relationship with various outcomes. Based on the assumption that there are multiple components of mindfulness, Baer and colleagues (2006) delineated and validated a measure of five facets of mindfulness. With a growing trend of incorporating mindfulness into prevention programs for parents (Cohen & Semple, 2010), it is valuable to examine the relationship between parenting outcomes and facets of mindfulness. Specifically, our research questions are: Are facets of mindfulness related at baseline to parenting efficacy and do some facets of mindfulness have a stronger association with parenting efficacy than others? Does initial change in mindfulness dimensions (after exposure to relationship education) result in subsequent change in parenting efficacy? Does the age of the child(ren) affect these relationships? Parents (n=578 parents—308 mothers, 270 fathers) were recruited as part of a larger randomized control trial (RCT) examining the program effectiveness of couple relationship education programs. Measures utilized include the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (Gibaud-Wallston & Wandersmann, 1978) and three subscales—nonreactivity to inner experience, acting with awareness, and nonjudging of inner experience—from the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (Baer, Smith, Hopkins, Krietemeyer, & Toney, 2006). Analyses utilized three waves of data—baseline, 6-week and 6-month follow-up. We utilized linear regression to test for a relationship at baseline between the three facets of mindfulness and parenting efficacy for both mothers and fathers, separately. Level of parenting efficacy was predicted by nonreactivity to inner experiences for mothers (β=.184, p=.001) and fathers (β=.126, p=.03) and by acting with awareness for mothers (β=.192, p=.004) and fathers (β=.179, p=.009), accounting for other variables in the model. Nonjudging of inner experience marginally predicted level of parenting efficacy for fathers (β=.127, p=.058), but not for mothers (β=.053, p=.421), considering all other variables in the model. Path models were conducted using only the program participant group (n=370 parents). We tested with mothers and fathers separately whether initial change in three facets of mindfulness predicted change in parenting efficacy six months after couples relationship education intervention. Positive change in nonreactivity to inner experience for fathers after intervention was significantly (β=.150, p=.041) associated with positive change in parenting efficacy six months later. Our cross-sectional findings suggest that the facets of mindfulness are not equally predictive of parenting efficacy. The findings from our path models suggest that enhanced nonreactivity to inner experience promotes greater parenting efficacy six months after receiving relationship education for fathers. This is an important first step to discovering what aspects of mindfulness may be particularly important for educators to emphasize when teaching mindfulness to parents. Final analyses presented in March will test if the age of the child(ren) affects these findings.

Abstract:
Inadequate nutrition and physical inactivity have been recognized as key sources of morbidity and mortality (U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, 2005). The current study is interested in integrating mindfulness into interventions geared towards changing health behaviors. Mindfulness is a Buddhist-based concept that has received an increasing amount of attention by clinicians and researchers in the field of psychology and medicine over the past 20 years (Bishop et al., 2004). Although mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist spiritual practices, the integration of mindfulness into medical and mental health treatment has transpired primarily in a secular manner (Baer, 2003). Mindfulness has already been incorporated into the treatment of many psychological and physical disorders (e.g., Kabat-Zinn, 2003). The ultimate goal of this line of research is to develop and test a mindfulness-based intervention for health behavior change. As an initial step, the current study examined whether mindfulness is related to diet, physical activity, and self-efficacy. Method: Participants (204 females and 93 males, mean age = 20.9 years) were recruited from the Introduction to Psychology subject pool at the University of Montana for participation in this study. Participants completed the Five Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), the FFMQ modified for mindful eating, as well as measures of physical activity, diet, self-efficacy, and stress. Results: Certain aspects of mindfulness appear to be related to specific health behaviors, lending partial support to the research hypotheses. Degree of mindfulness in everyday life was correlated with physical activity, fruit and vegetable intake, fat intake (males only), and self-efficacy. The results suggest that different aspects of mindfulness are important for males versus females. Clinical implications and future research areas are discussed.

For a mindfulness literature raises one more bridge between western and eastern wisdom, by pointing at buddhism as the path to knowledge. The dissertation reveals the creative process of the novel O homem dos patos, from the author herself, in two schemes. The first refers to the framing of her knowledge about the world around the Three characteristics: Anicca (Impermanence), Anatta (Egolessness) and Dukkha (Suffering). The second explains how this knowledge is directly and indispensably connected to the practices of Satipatthana (Mindfulness) and Vipassana meditation (Insight meditation), and how these affect the literary exercise. Excerpts of the novel are interwoven with the dissertation, which is an entirely new literary work.

Abstract:
Background: Mindfulness is considered a transdiagnostic process of change (Baer, 2007) which aids emotion regulation (Chambers, Gullone, & Allen, 2009). Clinically, mindfulness-based interventions can reduce depressive relapse (Kuyken et al., 2008) and increase wellbeing (Schroevers & Brandsma, 2010). However, it is not yet clear how mindfulness alters emotion processing (Davidson, 2010). This thesis examines the impact of both a brief lab-based mindfulness training, and longer term practice, on emotional response and related memory recall. Methods: We examined the impact of mindfulness on emotional response in both longterm meditators and matched controls. Participants underwent a brief training in adopting either experiential (state mindfulness) or evaluative self-focus whilst viewing a series of personality traits on a screen (Farb et al 2007). Images from the International Affective Picture System (Lang et al 1999) were then shown to investigate differences in emotional response. Self-reported arousal and valence ratings were collected, and skin conductance response (SCR) measured. We also investigated the impact of mindfulness on memory recall by administering a surprise recognition test. Results: People with more than 500 hours of meditation experience rated normatively negative stimuli as less unpleasant, and negative and positive stimuli as less arousing than controls. They also showed reduced SCR to positive stimuli. In addition, meditators scored higher on self-report measures tapping ‘non-reactivity’, ‘non-judging’ and ‘nonattachment’. No between condition differences in emotion processing were observed nor group differences on a memory task. Conclusion: Meditators showed measurable differences in emotional processing, both in subjective reports of their emotional experience and on a more implicit measure of physiological response. These data, while observational, are consistent with a state of calm equanimity in those with experience of meditation (Desbordes et al., 2014). The effects observed have clinical relevance, and may aid the understanding of the processes of change in mindfulness-based interventions.

Abstract:
The main aspect of this paper will focus on mindfulness in organizational settings. In recent years mindfulness has evolved into a range of secular therapies and courses, most of them focused on being aware of the present moment and simply noticing feelings and thoughts as they come and go. Moreover, mindfulness techniques, having long played an important role in various traditions around the world, are now recognized as having the potential to support employees in the workplace to manage and cope with various changes. The aim of this paper is to gain better understanding about mindfulness and how it could be beneficial in organizational settings, from an educational perspective. This thesis is based on literature review of the latest research on mindfulness and will be collected with the aim of completing Master Thesis. The literature review is composed of well-known researchers related to the research question, while identifying opportunities and challenges about mindfulness in the workplace. Moreover, the present study is providing insight for future research about mindfulness in educational settings. The different results obtained in this bachelor thesis confirm that there is a lack of research about mindfulness in educational settings. Especially, in the Northern European context. However, research that has been conducted about mindfulness in organizational settings, clearly shows that mindfulness has potential to influence on the overall well-being and effectiveness of employees. Moreover, practising mindfulness can help employees to adjust to changes with realistic expectations and the techniques to cope. Furthermore, current study could be seen as a good starting point for future educators, who would like to conduct their research about mindfulness in educational settings or introduce mindfulness in their workplace.

Abstract:
The state of the art technology has been penetrated every corner of people's life. It is a path to transfer to a new way of life with the artificial intelligence and big data resources. The next generation of transportation should not only be a mobile accommodation or a productive studio. It should be a second home or a companion to tackle individual problems and social issues to pervade the physical and mental ground with the mindful and natural approach. This project aims to provide a whole new experience in a vehicle. The supportive concept should stay within people's daily life. The engagement of the time gap and spacial shifting is the role to make people's lives stable with the smooth flow of emotional state. The concept is about offering people to recognise the individual condition and the current situation for better mental condition and stable emotion. Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Social relevance and industrial background of the wellness have been witnessed these days such as rapid growth of the economy and researches about an urban mental issue. It is signs of an eagerness to pursue a balance of life and encouraging mindfulness. The thesis will deliver a proper solution to design a product with proposing in-car activity and experience to cover the original subject within the automotive design field. Benchmarking of existing therapeutic solutions was a one of the main approaches for the research. Every design solution is proposed based on the fundamental element of the current solution in the market such as the verified mental care process, resources and basic principle. Architectural trend and structure were adopted to propose the different atmosphere and composition to tackle the emotional element within the moving world. Manual drawing initiated the key idea. Quick sketch modelling was utilised to build the core design solution and to demonstrate the interior transformation. Digital rendering/modelling software and physical soft mockup were important tools to prove feasible movement, proper space and right volume for the conceptual activity and product. 3D animation film is the out-put for the final visualisation. The film contains how each design element works and all parts are in harmony for the mindful space. The vehicle frames the new role beyond the smart transportation. Through various fields of mental solution, the concept STAY takes a part of the role of consistent emotional care in daily life. Its preventative approach blends into people's lifestyle. Abstract:
Mindfulness can be a method in health promotion for the prevention of work-related stress. In the current study six informants provide their experiences, through semi-structured interviews, how mindfulness can be practiced at work, what conditions are considered to increase and decrease implementation in everyday work and how mindfulness changed the individual in their way of work. The thematic analysis resulted in  four themes; become a lifestyle, focused presence, the organization's role and perception of mindfulness. To enable implementation of mindfulness in everyday work, it is important that the individual is motivated and that the organization creates conditions for implementation. There’s a need for further research, of how psychological organization factors and conditions enable the implementation of mindfulness in everyday work.

Abstract:
Mindfulness derives from meditative traditions and is a form of mental training that is increasingly incorporated into Western treatment approaches for common mental health problems. This thesis addresses the prophylactic effects of mindfulness practice and the implications for the treatment of anxiety. The first paper considers the role of attention as a predominant mechanism of mindfulness. The paper reviews the evidence for the effects of mindfulness on attentional subsets and suggests that mindfulness may in part exert its benefits by ameliorating maladaptive attentional processes that have been implicated in the aetiology of anxiety. The empirical paper reports the results of a randomised controlled trial that directly compared the prophylactic and differential effects of two mindfulness practices on pharmacologically-induced state anxiety and negative affect through inhalation of 7.5% carbon dioxide (CO2). 60 participants engaged in 10 minutes of focused mindfulness, open mindfulness or relaxation prior to a 20-minute inhalation of 7.5% CO2 or air. Consistent with the evidence-base, this study found that mindfulness reduced self-reported state anxiety and negative affect significantly more so than a period of relaxation. In the context of non-significant reductions in autonomic measures of arousal, these findings support that mindfulness exerts its benefits through specific rather than non-specific effects. The results are consistent with contemporary conceptualisations of mindfulness mechanisms that highlight the key role of attention and suggest that clinical effects are exerted through top-down control mechanisms that support emotion regulation.

Abstract:
Competence based self-esteem (CBSE) refers to a disposition where an individual strives for self-worth by achievements to compensate a low basic self-esteem (BSE). This kind of self-attitude is linked to burnout. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of an 8-week mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) intervention on self-ratings of CBSE, BSE, burnout and mindfulness. Four MBSR groups were enrolled and a total sample comprised 29 participants. Results of repeated measures ANOVAs showed a significant decrease in CBSE and burnout as well as significant increases in BSE and mindfulness. It was further found that pre test - post test change in mindfulness was significantly associated with reduced CBSE. These results indicate the effectiveness of MBSR to reduce burnout and suggest the program’s applicability in treating self-esteem related problems.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
Mindfulness and the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programme is becoming increasingly popular in the Western world. These days, there are many institutes and organisations that support and promote mindfulness, while there is also a growing body of research and academic literature on the topic. Yet, despite the implicit connection to social change, the focus of secular mindfulness in the Western world has primarily remained on the benefits that mindfulness hold for the individual. This notion prompts the question whether there is a relationship between mindfulness and social change. The key theoretical constructs that constitute the theoretical framework of my study include Habermas’s critical theory and his emancipatory-cognitive interest in knowledge creation, and Mezirow’s transformative learning theory, which expanded the Habermasian theory in terms of adult education and learning. Guided by my theoretical framework, the primary research question was formulated as follows: ‘What are the relationships between mindfulness, emancipatory learning and social change?’ In order to address this research question, I selected a case study research approach and collected data using both quantitative and qualitative instruments. For my empirical investigation I selected, as my case study, an MBSR programme offered in Cape Town, South Africa. The data were collected from 55 adult learners who participated in the programme. To my knowledge, this is the first academic research study that investigates the MBSR programme in the field of adult education and learning in a South African context.

Abstract:
The three chapters of this thesis are united under a common theme of exploring mindfulness, specifically with reference to older people. Chapter one: The systematic literature review critically evaluates the evidence for mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for use with older adults (aged 60 years and older). 12 articles met pre-specified criteria for inclusion. In studies of relatively healthy, high functioning older adults, there were few benefits observed. For samples of older people with clinical levels of mood and physical health difficulty, benefits were observed in some studies across a range of psychosocial domains. The present review indicates that MBSR is both a viable and a feasible approach for use with older people. As methodological concerns were evident, further research could usefully build upon this initial evidence-base. Chapter two: The empirical paper was a cross-sectional survey of community dwelling, English-speaking younger adults aged 18-34 years (n = 162) and older adults aged 65-93 years (n = 134), using a group difference design. In accordance with initial hypotheses and theories of lifespan development, the present findings indicated higher levels of dispositional mindfulness, affect and well-being for older adults, compared to younger adults. Future research and clinical implications are discussed. This may inform the development of age-appropriate mindfulness interventions. Chapter three: In the reflective paper, I share my experiences of conducting research with people in later life and of researching the topic of mindfulness. I then provide a reflective and reflexive account of the stages of research and go on to discuss implications for my professional and personal development.

Abstract:
Perinatal depression is widespread and disabling with a number of negative consequences for the mother, father and child. Prenatal depression, stress and anxiety and a history of depression are significant predictors of perinatal depression suggesting a need for preventative interventions. Helpful psychological interventions for this period are currently scarce and expensive and research examining preventative interventions is lacking. Preliminary evidence suggests that generic and pregnancy-tailored mindfulness courses can reduce stress, anxiety and depression in this population. Because, more broadly, access to mindfulness courses is inequitable, research has begun to focus on the possibility of delivering such courses online, resulting in potentially beneficial courses becoming available with a reduction in cost to the participant and health service. The aim of this doctorate was to conduct a series of sequenced studies culminating in an overall evaluation of mindfulness courses for expectant mothers. In cross-sectional analyses, higher levels of dispositional mindfulness were associated with healthier mood levels suggesting that increasing mindfulness in this population (via a course) may be beneficial. A preliminary evaluation of a face-to-face mindfulness-based course for childbirth and parenting showed promising results for prospective mothers and fathers and further research would be useful. An online mindfulness course delivered to expectant mothers improved prenatal mood compared to a waitlist control group but there was a high level of drop-out for course completers. This high attrition rate, though often noted in internet intervention research, is concerning and warrants further investigation. More generally, mindfulness courses for expectant parents show potential and future work would benefit from larger samples and control group comparisons.

Abstract:
Although mindfulness interventions with college students have yield positive results, many students are not continuing to engage after the interventions. This may be because very little research has been done to investigate the health behavior beliefs of college students in regard to mindfulness for stress reduction. The purpose of this investigation was to identify the most influential components of the Integrated Behavioral Model (IBM) that potentially assist with predicting college student participation in mindfulness activities for stress reduction. Interviews, informed by the IBM, were conducted with 20 current college students and 5 current mindfulness instructors working with college students. The attitudes and perceived control constructs were most prominent for both samples with less participant reference to perceived norms. The most common engagement barriers for the college students, mentioned by both samples, were the lack of time and demands of school. The college student participants most often focused on the benefits of the practice whereas the instructor participants focused on the discomfort the students experience when engaging in mindfulness. Inconsistencies emerged when comparing the mindfulness definitions from the college student participants. Overall, the college student participants displayed positive health beliefs towards mindfulness for stress reduction. These findings could support future mindfulness research utilizing the IBM to further investigate college student participation in mindfulness activities.

Abstract:

With nearly 2.9 million work related injuries in the United States each year and nearly 5,000 work related deaths, opportunities exist to build on existing safety management interventions to improve workplace safety. In addition to the impact on worker’s lives related to workplace safety accidents, workplace related injuries and deaths account for nearly $200 billion in direct costs to U.S. organizations. Current research in the application of workplace mindfulness offers the potential for a leading edge intervention that can lead to increased attention and situational awareness, which could greatly enhance workplace safety. The current study explored the relationship that low-dose mindfulness practice has on workplace safety.

Included in the current study was an examination of current and historical interventions for managing safety as well as a review of mindfulness research, with an emphasis on workplace mindfulness, and finally a review of the limited research that has begun to explore the relationship between mindfulness and workplace safety. A case study was conducted with a lab in a large bio-tech company in Southern California. 16 participants engaged in daily mindfulness training for six weeks. After the six-week trial, participants were interviewed, results were analyzed and organized into results, theoretical implications, and practical implications. The case study concluded with summarizing key themes, surfacing limitations of the study and recommendations for further study were identified. The findings of this study suggest there are great opportunities for low-dose mindfulness to positively impact workplace safety, potentially saving individuals from harm and organizations from costly accidents.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the transformation of the Buddhist technique of mindfulness as it is applied in psychotherapy. It is based on primarily on the experience of a Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) course as taught in Montreal in 2015, as well as some prior experiences of mindfulness meditation at the Palyul Center and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Ottawa. Written as an auto-ethnography, the thesis provides an intimate first hand immersion experience into mindfulness meditation through a phenomenological approach in anthropology. The sociopolitical aspects of MBSR are also discussed through a related Deleuzo-Guattarian framework. The central argument of the thesis is that while effective in the management of stress MBSR fails to address deeper and more severe forms of suffering, stressing the management of emotions rather than their exploration. This fact coupled with the omission of the Buddhist concept of no-independent self and training in mindfulness results in MBSR being a territorializing force of self-surveillance and a social pacifier .The question emerging from this exploration brings us to revisit the role of ethics in the application mindfulness in therapy.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the study of the psychological process variables that are active in the beneficial effects of meditation as well as in other therapeutic practices. The thesis’s main focus is the ability of decentering, described as the ability to observe one’s thoughts and feelings as temporary, objective events in the mind, as opposed to reflections of the self that are necessarily true. The ability of decentering is a key process for healthy psychological functioning, hence it is a common factor identified in different pathologies and psychotherapies. The first piece of work presented in this thesis consists on the validation of the Spanish version of the Experiences Questionnaire‐Decentering scale. The scale showed good psychometric properties. It also demonstrated that the participants with psychiatric diagnosis scored lower than the non‐clinical control group, and that the subjects without meditative experience scored lower than the subjects with meditative experience. We also present here the analysis of the relationship between meditative practice and valued behavior and the mediating processes involved in it. We demonstrated that daily meditators are more aware of their values, more consistent with them and have overall more life fulfillment. The measures of values correlated with the processes of mindfulness and decentering, and we could observe their mediating role amongst meditative practice and values. Decentering mediated the relationship between meditative practice and value‐related behavior. The association between meditative practice and valued living and life fulfillment was mediated by both the capacity of decentering and the dimensions of description and nonjudgment of mindfulness. Finally, since ayahuasca’s consumption has been demonstrated to have therapeutic potential for depressive symptomatology, substance abuse and complicated mourning; this thesis explores whether the psychological processes underlying the benefits of taking ayahuasca are common with the psychological processes underlying mindfulness. Our results show that ayahuasca intake produces significant increases in the mindfulness facets of nonjudgment and non‐reaction of the FFMQ scale and in decentering. In addition, the scores obtained after consumption are in the range of those observed after an extensive practice of mindfulness.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis was to investigate the association between mindfulness and self-regulated learning. Mindfulness is used in the treatment of stress and anxiety, and has been associated with attention regulation and affect-regulation. Mindful individuals have been found to use more strategies to keep attention on task to enhance their performance. It was therefore predicted that mindfulness would be positively associated with self-regulated learning. The data was collected using self-rapport questionnaires and consisted of three different measurements; the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) [(Baer, R. A., Smith, G. G., Hopkins, J., Krietemeyer, J. & Toney, L. (2006). Using Self-Report Assessment Methods to Explore Facets of Mindfulness. Assessment, 13(1), 27 – 45.)], test anxiety and the strategy section of the “Motivational Strategic Learning Questionnaire” (MSLQ) [(Pintrich, P. R., Smith, D. A. F., Garcia, T., & Mckeachie, W. J. (1991). A Manual for the Use of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Non-Journal item.)], and a sample from Locke and Latham goal – setting questionnaire. The respondents were 346 students from the “Norwegian University of Science and Technology” (NTNU), with a response rate of 41%. A theoretical link between mindfulness and self-regulated learning is initially introduced, before the empirical investigation. The reliability of the instruments used and dimensional structure was checked to investigate the measurements reliability and consistencies with previous finding. The main aim was then tested, which consisted of testing association between mindfulness and self-regulative learning components, measured as students use of learning strategies, meta-cognitive self-regulation strategies, test anxiety and as goal-setting. Inter-correlations between the indices were performed. Cluster analysis was used to determine response tendencies within the mindfulness dimensions and MANOVA was applied to test differences between the clusters in self-regulated learning. The results indicated that the dimensional structure of the FFMQ was replicated with satisfactory Chronback alpha. Reliability of the learning strategy indices was consistent with previous results. The correlations between the different measurements revealed the facets of mindfulness to be positively correlated with learning strategies, and negatively correlated with test anxiety. Mindfulness was furthermore, across all facets, consistently and significantly positively correlated with goal accomplishment and negatively with goal dissatisfaction. Cluster analysis revealed that the cluster with a combination of high scores on mindfulness facets scored consistently better on the self-regulated learning facets. These results stayed significant even when gender, age and education were controlled for.

Abstract:
Despite the robust evidence base highlighting that paranoia is common in the nonclinical population, interventions to reduce non-clinical paranoia have not yet been examined. The aim of the study was to (I) investigate the effect of a brief mindfulness task on non-clinical paranoia, measured using a behavioural indicator (the Prisoner's Dilemma Game; PDG), and (2) determine whether Chadwick et al's (2005) model of responding mindfully to psychotic sensations applies to non-clinical paranoia, examining the relationship between cognitive processes and facets of mindfulness with paranoia. A student sample was used for the study (N = 60). Participants were randomly allocated to one of two conditions, brief mindfulness or control condition. Changes in paranoia and mindfulness were examined at baseline and following the intervention. Participants also completed trait measures of cognitive processes (experiential avoidance, judgement and rumination), mindfulness and paranoia. Three key findings emerged from the study; (1) state paranoia decreased and state mindfulness increased in both conditions, suggesting that both paranoia and mindfulness are amenable to experimental manipulation; (2) the findings suggest that the PDG provides a behavioural signature of state paranoia and (3) the cross sectional analysis suggests that cognitive processes operating in psychotic symptoms, as identified in Chadwick et al's (2005) model, also appear to occur in non-clinical paranoia. The findings provide further support to an emerging evidence base regarding mindfulness and paranoia and provide a foundation for further research into the application of mindfulness to non-clinical paranoia.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The present mixed method study examined the impacts of brief mindfulness training on cultivation of mindfulness traits, physical and emotional well-being, and relationship quality. Twenty-nine graduate students were organized into a control (n = 14) and a treatment (n = 15) group. All participants completed pre/post measures of their mindfulness competencies, physical and emotional well-being, and relationship quality. The treatment group participated in a 4-week mindfulness training workshop. The control group exhibited no significant changes over the study period. The treatment group exhibited significant improvement of self-reported mindfulness competencies and improved emotional and physical well-being and relationship quality. The results of the present study are encouraging, emphasizing the value of brief training designs for cultivating mindful awareness. Continued practice and research in this area is expected to introduce more and more people to the benefits of mindfulness, enabling them to experience the benefits of more personally attuned and aware living.

Abstract:

Abstract:
First part of Volume I of the thesis presents a systematic review exploring the effects of mindfulness based stress reduction on sleep disturbance. The reviewed studies showed a mixed picture - no clear conclusions could be drawn regarding effectiveness of the intervention on the sleep disturbance. Next an empirical study focused on the relationship between changes in mindfulness and changes in neurobehavioural functioning among people with acquired brain injury attending a mindfulness group is presented. The data was collected and analysed using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative study suggests that a decrease in depressive symptoms (measured by Neurobehavioural Functioning Inventory) is related to improved ability to describe (measured by Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire). The qualitative analysis identified four themes: “pain”; “understanding / experiencing of mindfulness”; “mindfulness as a state with distinct sensory quality” and “mindfulness as a source of calmness”. Volume I concludes with an executive summary of the systematic review and the research study. Volume II presents five clinical practice reports covering psychological models, single case experimental design, service evaluation, case study and leadership and consultancy presentation.

Abstract:
Mindfulness may be one way in which common factors could be enhanced in trainee therapists. Previous research has found some support for mindfulness increasing empathy, compassion and emotion regulation, but research is affected by a lack of active control groups and interventions with multiple components. An experimental design was used with a brief (15 min) mindfulness practice compared to a brief (15 min) ‘mind-wandering’ control group, in order to overcome some of these confounds. Participants were 48 trainee therapists who were randomly assigned to two groups of equal sizes. Measures were taken at baseline and post-induction. The predicted findings for empathy and compassion for others were not found. The mindfulness group did show lower negative affect at post-test than the control group, but only in participants who were high in negative affect at baseline, a result which should be viewed tentatively due to the small number of participants in each subgroup of the analysis. Issues limiting confidence in the results are discussed, particularly that the two groups did not report different levels of state mindfulness after the brief exercises. Implications for future research, particularly in considering appropriate active controls for mindfulness, are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Due to the health and relational benefits associated with mindfulness, interest has increased in researching the topic. Typically, samples have been more homogeneous with no attention given to variations in mindfulness levels that may exist based on individuals’ characteristics. Therefore, this study assessed levels of three facets of mindfulness – non-reactivity, awareness, and non-judgement - with 1796 diverse individuals. Results indicate differences in mean level of non-reactivity based on sex, education level, income, and relationship status, with higher levels, on average, for males, individuals without a high school degree, individuals with an annual salary of $75,000+, and married individuals; differences in mean level of awareness based on sex and race, with higher levels, on average, for females and white individuals; and differences in mean level of non-judgement based on income, with higher levels, on average, for low income individuals. Findings highlight the value of considering social address in mindfulness studies.

Abstract:

Organizations continue to invest time and money in diversity programs to provide people with the competencies to work effectively in an increasingly diverse workplace. Most programs are based on cognitive theories of behavior change and research however fails to show long-term changes in attitudes and behavior (e.g., Brynes & Kiger, 1990; Hogan & Mallot, 2005; Sanchez & Medkik, 2004). Empirical work on mindfulness demonstrates that greater awareness of the process of one’s own thinking, and the process of active categorization has been associated with reductions in stereotypes, prejudice, and the emotional discomfort related to cognitive dissonance (e.g., Djikic et al., 2008; Hayes et al., 2004; Lillis & Hayes, 2007; Kuscera, 2009). Unfortunately, only one study of diversity programs that included a formal mindfulness intervention was found (e.g., Lillis & Hayes, 2007). Given the prevalence of experiential exercises in programs as well as a theoretical argument that can be drawn between Kabat-Zinn’s (2003) definition of mindfulness and experiential exercises, this study utilized meta-analytical procedures to investigate whether programs that included experiential activities showed stronger and longer lasting positive effects. Results indicated that programs that included experiential activities were indeed correlated with better affective outcomes (i.e., attitudes, feelings, and interracial comfort and tolerance) in academic settings, at least in the short-term. Future recommendations regarding the intentional use of mindfulness interventions are made to further enhance affective outcomes among diversity programs both inside and outside of academia.

Abstract:
It is well documented that the perinatal period (the time from pregnancy until the first year of a child’s life) is a crucial window of opportunity for foetal and infant development. Evidence suggests that parental psychopathology can have harmful consequences for the parent-infant relationship, parents’ relationship, infant’s development and later mental-health into adulthood. The focus of this thesis will be on exploring mindfulness as one possible non-pharmacological intervention that could benefit parents’ emotional well-being during the perinatal period. Chapter one contains a mixed methods systematic review of 14 published studies of Mindfulness and Acceptance Based Interventions (MABIs) during the perinatal period, for mothers experiencing anxiety and stress. The synthesis of quantitative and qualitative results were integrated and demonstrated tentative findings that MABIs can reduce anxiety, pregnancy anxiety and stress for mothers, whilst increasing self-efficacy and mindfulness. Qualitative themes discussed propose possible explanations for these findings. Methodological limitations are discussed in line with implications for clinical practice and recommendations for future research. Chapter two explores mothers’ and fathers’ experiences of mindfulness during parenting, one year following their attendance on the Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting programme (MBCP). Ten semi-structured interviews gathered rich, in-depth, idiosyncratic accounts which were subject to Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Two superordinate themes emerged from the data, ‘Getting closer to really living’ and ‘Greater connectedness and attunement’. Finally, Chapter 3 provides a reflective account of the author’s lived experience of the parallels between her own research journey and personal experience of becoming a mother. It addresses the author’s epistemological position and the researcher’s influence on the research process.
