Abstract:
The quality of caregiver-child interactions influences child, parent, and family wellness. Although the existing body of literature links mindfulness to positive outcomes within the family, little is known about how specific dimensions of mindful parenting are associated with parenting practices or child behavior reactivity. Based on a mindful parenting model and differential susceptibility model, this quantitative study used an online survey method to examine how specific dimensions of mindful parenting are associated with parenting practices and child behavior reactivity among a sample of 152 parents of elementary-age children. This study also explored how parent life stress modifies the relationship between mindful parenting dimensions and parenting practices and child reactivity. A model estimation was calculated using least squares regression-based path analysis to test the strength and direction of the association between the 5 dimensions of mindfulness and child behavioral reactivity through mediation and moderated mediation models. Results revealed that the mindful parenting dimensions of acceptance and attention had significant positive associations with child behavior reactivity. Emotional awareness and attention were mediated by positive parenting; however, no moderated mediation of any dimension of mindfulness and child behavior reactivity was found. The results from this study may be used to promote positive social change by helping service providers develop effective parenting programs and properly identify parents who might benefit from mindfulness interventions and stress reduction techniques.

McCaffrey, Stacey. "Mindfulness In Parenting Questionnaire (MIPQ): Development and validation of a measure of mindful parenting." NSUWorks, 2015. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/cps_stuetd/81.

Full text
Abstract:
Mindful parenting has been defined as “paying attention to your child and your parenting in a particular way: intentionally, here and now, and non-judgmentally” (Kabat-Zinn & Kabat-Zinn, 1997). Although it is hypothesized that increasing mindful parenting improves parent and child functioning, the development of a measure of mindful parenting is needed to support this assumption. The aim of the present study was to develop and psychometrically evaluate a measure of mindful parenting (the Mindfulness In Parenting Questionnaire: MIPQ) for use with mothers and fathers of both children and adolescents, ranging in age from 2- to 16-years-old. The current study contained three phases. First, content experts in the area of mindfulness and parenting provided content for preliminary items. Second, parents participated in cognitive interviewing in order to reduce measurement error and increase the psychometrics of the measure. The third and final phase consisted of large-scale data collection to explore the psychometrics of the new MIPQ. Two-hundred and three parents recruited from academic and after-school programs in South Florida completed the MIPQ, along with measures of intrapersonal mindfulness, parenting behavior, parenting style, and a demographics questionnaire. The Partial Credit Model, which evidenced significantly better fit than the Rating Scale Model, was used to evaluate the MIPQ using WINSTEPS 3.74.01. The MIPQ was iteratively refined based on statistical and clinical considerations, resulting in a 28-item measure with 4 response categories. Further, results supported a 2 factor mindful parenting construct. The first factor (Parental Self-Efficacy) reflects a parent’s self-efficacy, as well as nonreactivity and awareness within the parenting role, while the second factor (Being in the Moment with the Child) pertains to the child, and reflects present-centered attention, empathic understanding, and acceptance of the child. Factors were correlated (r = .67) and explained 42.3% and 43.4% of the variance, respectively. Correlations between the MIPQ and parenting style, parenting practices, practice of mindfulness, and participant demographics provided support for convergent and discriminant validity. The MIPQ exhibited a positive and weak correlation with the MAAS, indicating that interpersonal and intrapersonal mindfulness are related, but separate and distinct constructs. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
In this study, a concurrent randomized multiple baseline across three parent-child dyads single-case design was employed to evaluate the effects of a brief three-week parent training program, titled Practiced Routines. The Practiced Routines parent training program included positive behavior supports (PBS) and mindfulness strategies within the context of natural family routines. Three mothers and their children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) participated. Visual analysis combined with a standardized mean difference analysis revealed mixed results with a medium effect found for increases in parent behavioral strategy use and small effects found for reductions in parent stress and child challenging behavior. All three mothers rated the social validity of the Practiced Routine program favorably. Implications for science and practice in educational and behavior health early intervention for families of children with ASD are discussed.

Abstract:
Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face many challenges which lead to low levels of psychological well-being, partly caused by inability to parent in accordance with one’s values. Child-directed play, a moment of being fully attentive and responsive to one’s child, has the potential to increase parental values. A non-concurrent multiple-baseline experimental design investigated whether daily exercises of child-directed play improved valued parenting and parental perspective-taking. Eight parents of children with diagnosed or suspected ASD were followed daily for six weeks. The intervention comprehended daily practice of child-directed play and video supervision. Child-directed play increased ratings of parental values for all but one participant (Hedges’ g* = 1.67) with effect maintained at follow-up, and increased ratings of parental perspective-taking. A gradual effect indicates the need for greater difference in baseline length between participants. No effects on children, nor on parental well-being were investigated in the present study.

Townshend, Kishani. "Evolving Emotions: Critically Analysing the Associations between Mindful Parenting and Affect Regulation." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/120132.

Abstract:
Ancient scholars, theologians and philosophers have debated for centuries about the nature of the mind. Yet depression is the leading cause of disability across the world. The ubiquitous growth of mindfulness has in recent decades, been applied to assist parents with affect regulation. Mindful parenting is defined as a set of parenting skills that enhance present-centred, discerning awareness in parent–child relationships. The potential benefits of mindful parenting could span across generations to promote affect regulation for both children and parents. However further clarity is needed on how mindful parenting facilitates affect regulation. To date the literature examining the effectiveness of Mindful Parenting (MP) programs has been plagued by poor methodological design, diversity of interventions, questions surrounding program fidelity and a lack of clarity about change processes. Aims: The overall purpose of this dissertation was to critically analyse how mindful parenting is associated with affect regulation to evolve emotions. The focus of this dissertation is on mindful parenting of children aged 0 to 18 years. More specifically it aims to: - 1. Systematically review the international and national literature on the effectiveness of MP programs in promoting the wellbeing of children and parents (Study 1). 2. Investigate the effectiveness of an Australian MP program called Caring for Body and Mind in Pregnancy (CBMP) in reducing perinatal depression, anxiety and stress amongst a sample of at-risk pregnant women (Study 2). 3. Critically analyse how change processes utilised by MP programs are associated with affect regulation (Study 3). 4. Clarify which factors in the change processes of self-compassion and mindfulness scales have the strongest correlation with the reduction of perinatal depression (Study 4). xvi Method: Four diverse epistemologies were utilised to investigate the overarching research aim. Study 1 utilised the systematic review methodology to review the best available evidence on the effectiveness of MP Programs. Study 2 employed a repeated measures design to investigate the effectiveness of CBMP from a seven-year hospital dataset. Study 3 critically analysed the change processes that promote affect regulation by using Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to examine semi-structured interviews with four facilitators of MP programs. Finally, Study 4 utilised Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to analyse the change processes associated with the reduction of perinatal depression. Results: The systematic review yielded inconclusive evidence to support the effectiveness of MP programs due to the poor methodological quality of studies. Study 2 found CBMP significantly improved perinatal depression, anxiety, stress, mindfulness and self-compassion. The findings from Study 3 resulted in the anchor, a novel theoretical framework to investigate change processes. The anchor incorporates closely interconnected change mechanisms namely reflective functioning, attachment, cognitive, affective, somatic and social change mechanisms. The results from Study 4 indicated that self-kindness, observing and acting with awareness were associated with significant reductions in perinatal depression. Conclusion: Although the systematic review was unable to conclusively establish the effectiveness of Mindful Parenting programs, the other three studies provided suggestive evidence of its effectiveness. Contributions to new knowledge include conducting one of the first systematic reviews on mindful parenting, clarifying change processes associated with the reduction of perinatal depression and developing, a novel model of change, the anchor. The phenomenology of affect regulation still appears to puzzle humanity. Keywords: mindful parenting, mindfulness, affect regulation, attention regulation, emotions, perinatal depression, perinatal anxiety and stress.

Abstract:
Although an increasing effort has been observed in order to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parents and adolescents, many of the psychological mechanisms involved in that impact remain unstudied. The aim of this study was to investigate how the pandemic has affected parents and adolescents, as well as to examine if mindful parenting and compassion, processes that have been continuously linked to mental health, were implicated in the way parents and their children cope with the distress caused by these unprecedented times. The cross-sectional study included a sample of parents (N = 73; Mage = 47.28; SD = 5.66), a sample of their children - adolescents between 12 and 18 years old - (N = 45; Mage = 15.52; SD = 1.76), and a third sample in which parents and their children were paired up (N = 25). Correlations revealed that the positive impact of the pandemic on the parental role was positively and significantly associated with life satisfaction in the role as a parent, self-compassion, and mindful parenting, and negatively and significantly associated with depression and anxiety. In the adolescents’ study, the positive impact of the pandemic on the family was positively and significantly associated with the soothing emotions adolescents feel inside their family and compassion from parents. Two simple mediation models were estimated, revealing that the impact of the pandemic on the parental role was directly and indirectly associated with parents’ satisfaction with life in their role as a parent, through mindful parenting, and that the impact of the pandemic on the family was indirectly associated with the soothing emotions adolescents feel inside their family, through compassion they receive from their parents. Two moderation models were also estimated, showing that parents’ compassion for their children, unlike mindful parenting, moderated the relationship between the impact of the pandemic on the parental role and children’s self-compassion. In conclusion, results highlight the importance of processes like mindful parenting and compassion for children in understanding how the COVID-19 pandemic impacts parents and adolescents’ mental health and relationship. Other results are discussed, as well as contributions of the present study and possible clinical implications.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status quo of mindful parenting in 5th and 6th graders' parents as well as its relationship with personal background variables, parental stress, and coping strategies. The survey participants were 730 pupil's parents from two primary schools in Tainan City. The questionnaire comprised background information, the Mindful Parenting Scale, the Parental Stress Scale, and the Coping Strategies Scale. Statistical methods used to render the results included descriptive statistics, independent t test, Hotteling's T2 test, one-way analysis of variance, one-way multivariate analysis of variance, simple regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. The main results were as follows: 1.The degrees of mindful parenting in 5th and 6th graders' parents, whether on the whole scale or on the subscales of "awareness to self", "awareness to child", and "parent effectiveness", were medium to high level. 2.The degree of mindful parenting in 5th and 6th graders' parents varied with family's economic status and parents' educational level. However, they would not vary with parents' gender, age, and the numbers of children in the family. 3.Parents' mindful parenting could negatively predict overall parental stress and the stresses resulted from "parental factors", "child factors", and "parent-child interaction". 4.After controlling the impact of parental stress, prentents' mindful parenting could positively predict the uses of "facing the problem actively", "adjusting cognitively" and "adjusting emotion positively" coping strategies, and negatively predict the use of "playing down the problem passively" coping strategy. However, it could not predict the use of "venting negative emotions" coping strategy. Finally, the researcher discussed the above results and provided suggestions for the reference of child caregivers, educators and prospective researchers.

Objectives: The current study aims to explore if mindful parenting is associated with adolescents’ emotional regulation difficulties and if this relationship is mediated by adolescents' self-compassion. Method: The sample comprised 361 dyads from the general population, composed of mothers and their respective children (aged 12-19). The sample was collected in two school units from the district of Coimbra and all participants completed self-report measures. Mothers completed the Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Scale and adolescents completed the Self-compassion Scale - Short Version- and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale – Short Version. Results: An indirect effect of mindful parenting on adolescents’ emotional regulation difficulties through adolescents' self-compassion was found. Specifically, higher levels of mindful parenting were associated with lower levels of emotional regulation difficulties, through higher levels of self-compassion. In addition, an indirect effect of the compassion for the child dimension on adolescents' emotional regulation difficulties through their self-compassion was observed. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that adolescents’ self-compassion is an important explanatory mechanism of the relationship between mindful parenting and adolescents' emotional regulation difficulties. This study underlines the importance of intervening with mothers through parental training programs that promote mindful parenting, especially the compassion for the child dimension. This type of approach could have a positive impact on adolescents' self-compassion and, consequently, on their emotional regulation.

Abstract:
The present study explored the association between positive mental health and mindful parenting among mothers of babies with up to 24 months of age, analysing the mediating role of parenting stress on this association. As sample collection occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, the present study also tested the perceived impact of COVID-19 as a moderator. The present study had a cross sectional design, using self-report instruments validated for the Portuguese population. The sample, gathered online, was constituted by 142 women who had a child between 0 and 23 months of age. As hypothesized, higher levels of positive mental health were associated with lower levels of parenting stress and higher levels of mindful parenting. Parenting stress mediated the association between positive mental health and mindful parenting. The perceived impact of COVID-19 moderated the association between positive mental health and parenting stress; this association was stronger when the COVID-19 impact was more negative. These results are consistent with previous literature and allow us to understand the importance of studying the mechanisms behind this association and to reflect about new guidelines for early interventions. These results show the importance of understanding the mechanisms behind the associations between positive mental health, parental stress and mindful parenting during the transition to parenthood, especially in stress inducing circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic. The results also made clear the need assess and intervene on positive dimensions of maternal mental health during the first years of the transition to parenthood. That way, it will be possible to identify moments in which positive mental health may be compromised and, even if psychopathology is not present, intervene early to promote adaptative parental approaches.

Abstract:
Introduction: Mindful parenting refers to the parental approach in which parents adopt an accepting and compassionate stance towards their children and themselves, while being entirely present and attentive in the interactions with their children. However, little is known about the role that self expressiveness in the family plays in the relationship between mindful parenting and maternal adaptation. Objectives: The present study analyzed whether the levels of mindful parenting, self expressiveness of the family, parental stress and maternal depression varied among mothers from different socioeconomic backgrounds, with one or more children, with or without chronical illnesses, and with or without history of psychiatric illness. This study also analyzed the associations between mindful parenting, family's positive and negative self expressiveness, parental stress, and maternal depression, as well as assessed the direct and indirect effects of mindful parenting in parental depression and stress among mothers of school aged children, through the self expressiveness of the family context. Methods: The sample was comprised of 253 mothers of school-aged children. The participants completed the following instruments, in an online survey: sociodemographic questionnaire, Self-Expressiveness in the Family Questionnaire -short form, Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Parental Stress Scale. Regression analyses and PROCESS computational tool in particular were used to examine main and interaction/moderating effects. Results: Mindful parenting was positively associated with family’s self expressiveness, and positively and negatively associated with negative family’s self expressiveness, parental stress, and maternal depression. In the mediation model, mindful parenting showed to have a direct effect on maternal depression and parental stress, as well as an indirect effect through its association with positive self expressiveness in the family. Conclusions: This study’s results suggests mindful parenting has important effects on stress and depression reduction, as well as family’s positive self expressiveness is a potential explanatory mechanism of the relationship between mindful parenting and these indicators of maladaptation. This study emphasizes the importance of interventions that increase competences inherent to the exercise of mindful parenting and positive emotional expressiveness in the family context, particularly to increase mothers’ psychological adjustments indexes.

Objectives: The present study aimed to explore whether the relationship between psychological flexibility (represented by behavioral awareness, valued action and openness to experience) and mindful parenting was mediated by depressive symptomology experienced in the postpartum period. Methods: This study comprises a sample, collected exclusively online, of 361 women in the postpartum period (0-2 months postpartum) who completed the following instruments: Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Scale - Baby Version, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and Comprehensive Assessment of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Processes (CompACT). Since this is a longitudinal study, data collection occurred in two moments about 3 months apart. Results: There were significant direct effects of the behavioral awareness and valued action dimensions in mindful parenting. Specifically, higher levels of behavioral awareness and valued action were associated with higher levels of mindful parenting. Significant indirect effects were found between psychological flexibility (i.e, behavioral awareness, valued action and openness to experience) and mindful parenting through depressive symptomatology experienced in the postpartum period. These indirect effects occurred through negative associations between psychological flexibility and depressive symptomatology, as well as negative associations between these symptoms and mindful parenting. Conclusions: The results suggest that depressive symptomatology experienced by mothers in the postpartum period constitutes an important explanatory mechanism of the relationship between psychological flexibility and mindful parenting. These results suggest that interventions with mothers in the postpartum period, may benefit from psychological flexibility approaches to reduce depressive symptomatology and promote mindful parenting.

Objectives: The present study aimed to explore whether the fatigue, the difficulties in emotion regulation and the mindful parenting levels differed across mothers with clinically significant anxious and/or depressive symptomatology levels and mothers with normal levels of symptomatology in the postpartum period. It also aimed to examine if the difficulties in emotion regulation mediated the relationship between fatigue and mindful parenting and if the levels of maternal anxious and/or depressive symptomatology moderated these relationships. Method: The sample comprised 295 mothers of newborns until 12 months of age. The majority of the participants (88.8%) was recruited online and only 11.2% of the participants were recruited in person in nurseries located in the central region of Portugal. The participants completed the following self-reported measures: Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Scale - Infant Version; Fatigue Assessment Scale; Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale - Short Form. Results: It was verified that mothers with clinically significant anxious and/or depressive symptomatology levels showed higher levels of fatigue and of difficulties in emotion regulation and lower levels of mindful parenting than mothers with normal levels of symptomatology. In the moderated mediation model, fatigue presented a significant direct effect on mindful parenting, but only in the group of mothers without clinically significant symptomatology. Specifically, higher levels of fatigue associated with lower levels of mindful parenting. It was also observed a significant indirect effect through difficulties in emotion regulation in both groups of symptomatology, that is, higher levels of fatigue associated with higher levels of difficulties in emotion regulation which, in turn, associated with lower levels of mindful parenting. Conclusions: Our results suggest that difficulties in emotion regulation are a relevant explanatory mechanism of the relationship between fatigue and mindful parenting, particularly in mothers with clinically significant symptomatology levels. This study highlights the need and importance of intervening with mothers in the postpartum period, namely in reducing fatigue and anxious and/or depressive symptomatology, as well fostering adaptive emotion regulation and mindful parenting skills.

Objetives: The current study aimed to explore if there were differences in parental reflective functioning and in mindful parenting between mothers with clinically significant levels of anxiety and/or depression, and mothers with normal levels of symptomatology, in the postpartum period, and if the relationship between anxiety symptomatology and depression symptomatology with mindful parenting was mediated by parental reflective functioning. Method: The sample included 295 mothers of babies up to one year old. The majority of participants were collected online (88.8% of the participants) and 11.2% were collected in person in several nurseries in the central area of Portugal. Participants completed the following self-report measures: the Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Scale-Baby Version, the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Results: Mothers with clinically significant levels of anxiety and/or depression symptomatology presented lower levels of mindful parenting and of the dimension Certainty about Mental States of parental reflective functioning, as well as higher levels of the dimension Pre-Mentalizing Modes than mothers with normal levels of symptomatology. In the mediation model, an indirect effect of depression symptomatology on mindful parenting through two dimensions of parental reflective functioning was found. Specifically, higher levels of depression symptomatology were associated with lower levels of parental reflective functioning (higher levels of Pre-Mentalizing Modes and lower levels of Certainty about Mental States) that, in turn, were associated with mindful parenting. In addition, a direct effect of anxiety symptomatology on mindful parenting was found, in which higher levels of anxiety symptomatology were associated with lower levels of mindful parenting. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that parental reflective functioning is an important explanatory mechanism of the relationship between the depression symptomatology and mindful parenting. Our results also suggest that there is a direct relationship between the anxiety symptomatology and mindful parenting. This study underlines the importance of intervening with mothers with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression in the postpartum period, especially in decreasing psychopathology and in promoting reflexive and mindful parenting skills.

Abstract:
Objetive. Mindful parenting is characterized by the application of the concepts, practices and principles of mindfulness to the relationships and interactions between parents and children. Despite the growing number of studies on this form of parenting, we still know very little about the predictive role of the sociocultural context in which the parent-child relationship is embedded. Thus, the main goal of the present study is to explore the role of the sociocultural context in mindful parenting, such as sociodemographic (e.g., parent’s sex; education levels) and work-related characteristics (e.g., work schedule, work-family conflict), social support networks (e.g., help in domestic tasks) and the marital relation (e.g., sharing of parental responsibilities with the spouse) in the different dimensions of mindful parenting.Design and methods. The sample included 410 parents of children and adolescents between 1 and 19 years of age who responded to a sociodemographic questionnaire and to the self-reported measures of the Work-Family Conflict and Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting.Results. In order to test the role of the sociodemographic and contextual variables in the various dimensions of mindful parenting, multiple linear regressions were performed. Concerning sociodemographic variables, higher education levels were significantly associated with higher levels of nonjudgmental acceptance of parental functioning and female gender was associated with higher levels of emotional awareness of the child. Concerning the work context, higher levels of work-family conflict were associated with lower levels of nonjudgmental acceptance of parental functioning, listening with full attention, emotional awareness of the child and self-regulation in parenting. A flexible work schedule was also associated with higher levels of nonjudgmental acceptance of parental functioning. Lastly, the existence of help with domestic tasks and sharing parental responsibility tasks with the partner were both associated with higher levels of self-regulation in parenting.Conclusions. The results suggest that variables such as parent’s sex, education levels, work schedule, social support network, responsibility sharing and work-family conflict seem to play an important role in the dimensions of mindful parenting.

Abstract:
Objectives: This study aimed to extend the research on coparenting and mindful parenting. In a first study, we sought to validate for the Portuguese population an instrument for assessing coparenting, the Parents’ Perceptions of the Coparenting Relationship questionnaire (PCPQ-PT). A second study was also developed to better understand the role that supportive coparenting can play in the relationship between anxious and/or depressive parental symptoms and mindful parenting. Method: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted in parents fluent in Portuguese, with children aged between 1 and 13 years old. In the first study, the participants completed the PCPQ-PT and self-reported measures assessing mindful parenting, parental emotional regulation and parental stress and statistical analyses were performed to analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the PCPQ. In the second study, the subjects completed self-reported measures assessing anxiety and/or depression, supportive coparenting and mindful parenting, and statistical analyses were performed to study the mediating role of supportive coparenting in the relationship between anxious and/or depressive parental symptoms and mindful parenting. Results: It was found that the PCPQ-PT is better represented by a general factor (Supportive Coparenting) than by the two specific factors (Supportive Behaviors and Reduced Supportive Behaviors). The PCPQ-PT proved to be a reliable measure of the quality of coparenting and the construct validity of this instrument was verified. Additionally, there was a significant direct effect of anxious and/or depressive symptomatology on mindful parenting and a significant indirect effect of anxious and/or depressive symptomatology on mindful parenting through supportive coparenting. Conclusions: The results of the first study demonstrate that the Portuguese version of the PCPQ is an appropriate assessment instrument to measure the quality of coparenting. In addition, the results obtained in the second study emphasizes the relevance of intervening in populations of parents, specifically, to reduce anxious and/or depressive symptomatology, as well as to foster supportive coparenting skills and mindful parenting.
