Abstract:
The article studies the poetics of M. Miller’s novel in the context of the initiation plot representation. The search for the hero is considered as one of the main problems of modern American literature. We use the cultural-historical and comparative methods and the method of narrative analysis in our research. The relevance of the study is the synthesis of approaches to the analysis of the novel “The Song of Achilles” by M. Miller. The study hypothesizes that, the technique of remythologization enables the writer to represent the universality of the human development stages and the crisis trials that adolescents face. The novel is considered both in the context of rethinking of the mythological narrative and in the aspect of representing the archaic model of initiation. The mythological plot basis, which implies plot determinism, makes it possible to emphasize the axiological, emotive discourse and protagonists’ inner changes. The parallel initiation of Patroclus and Achilles explicates the dichotomy of the godlike and the human elements in the inner nature of the characters. Patroclus, being close to the hero, shares his fate. He literally and metaphorically becomes Achilles in the finale of the novel, entering the battle in his armor and under his name. Achilles, on the contrary, shows human features due to the fact that he matures next to Patroclus. The article concludes that the theme of formation and internal evolution of the person in the context of the initiation rite and mythological narratives plays a plot-forming role in modern American literature.

Abstract:
AbstractWith the debate about same-sex marriage raging in the United States, this paper asks whether the canonical scriptures of Judaism and Christianity offer any justification for blessing same-sex unions. It looks to the ways that the Bible is used by proponents and opponents of same-sex marriage. It analyzes the hermeneutics of the religious left and the religious right, particularly as they grapple with the "clobber texts" of Lev. 18:22 and 20:13. It then turns to the biblical book of Ruth, which critic J. Hillis Miller describes as having "been alienated from itself, translated from itself" through new uses. The paper puts the book of Ruth to yet another new use/misprision, using it as a prooftext to support same-sex marriage. The book has already been upheld by lesbian readers of scripture because of the intimate relationship between the protagonists, Ruth and Naomi, but this paper "misreads" the text differently. Ruth describes how a marriage made between an Israelite and a Moabite brings about the line of King David, one of the most important figures in the Bible and the man from whose line the Messiah is expected to come. The biblical law, however, is unequivocal: Moabites are not permitted to enter into the community of Israel. Juxtaposing the levitical laws (ostensibly) prohibiting homosexuality with those banning Moabites from Israel, this paper argues that the religious left could hold up the book of Ruth as a biblical model for allowing marriage that seems explicitly forbidden by biblical law.

Abstract:
This paper considers the manifestations of nostalgia in the narrative and plot scenes of the protagonists of Russian young emigrants’ fiction of the 1930s – early 1940s. The focus is on the works of B. Poplavsky, G. Gazdanov, and J. Felzen. A reduction of nationally oriented nostalgic myths and feelings can be seen in the prose of young emigrants. However, a strengthened existential nostalgia is evident: a longing for the fullness of existence and wholeness of being or awareness of the impossibility of finding a new Home in the reality where one is abandoned and unrooted. The national nostalgia reduction determines the national identity reduction. The internal crisis of the heroes under study proves to be an identity crisis, intensified by an existential crisis. Their situation in an alien world is an existential dead end amid total disorientation. The heroes’ attempts to overcome existential nostalgia are different but equally fruitless: the entry into the “paradise of friends” and the Russian women’s love (“Apollo Bezobrazov” and “Home from Heaven” of Poplavsky), the myth of the House and the understanding of one’s past (“A Tale of One Travel” and “Night Roads” of Gazdanov), an appeal to the poet’s work, bringing the feeling of fullness of being in Russia (“Letters about Lermontov” of Felzen). To conclude, when interpreting nostalgia (its reduction), we find the prose of young emigrants to be closer not to the “older” generation of Russian emigration but to the Western emigrant prose (“Tropic of Cancer” by Miller and “Triumphal Arch” by Remarque).

Abstract:
Margaret Atwood’s famous work, The Handmaid’s Tale, offers innovative and intriguing perspectives on gender and gender roles, as they are dramatized and problematized in the context of a dystopian society that in many ways is a projection of our own. Particularly interesting in the novel are the roles on men, represented by the principal male characters: the Commander, Nick, and Luke. As Atwood employs these personae to describe at least three different manifestations of masculinity —all with their own conflicts and possibilities—, the first season of the television version of the novel, created by Bruce Miller and resealed in 2017, explores, expands, and exploits various visions of manhood that help understand not only the protagonist’s but also the reader’s/viewer’s world. This paper is an attempt to establish a dialogue of sorts between Atwood’s and Miller’s viewpoints on masculinity through their portrayals of these three characters and their interactions with their protagonist and their context.

Abstract:
Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” (1949) presents the working-class masculinity under threat. This paper has sought to argue that the threat is posed not only by the protagonist’s inability to assert his working-class masculine identity due to his (fear of) unemployment, but also by the instrumental use of reason by the employer and hegemonic masculinity. It has tried to unfold this threat in terms of R. Connell’s idea of ‘hegemonic masculinity’ and CALM report on crisis of modern masculinity published in 2014. The assumption is that Miller has depicted this threat by presenting the male protagonist in such an unfavorable situation that it relegates him to the vulnerable position of not being able to assert his masculine identity. It is also assumed that this threat is further validated by the presence of dominant masculinity. This research has sought to dramatize the playwright's consciousness of the masculinities in conflict and its outcome in America. This research is critically significant because reading this drama from the perspective of the crisis of subordinate or working-class masculinity is a far cry.

Abstract:
This research paper investigates the theme of imprisonment in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. This play demonstrates persons who are crushed and stifled by society which filled its citizens' mindswith certain myths, values, and systems that may contrast with honour and ethics. As a result, they appear to be formed of a number of contradicting selves, and sometimes torn between two worlds: the internal world of fantasies of a lost past and the external reality of an unwelcoming present world. The clash, between these two worlds, grows unstable and volatile till pushing its victim to submersion or even death. As Death of a Salesman begins, the audience would notice the existence of two time lines or plots. The first is that of the present time during the year1948 which moves on through a series of scenes that ends with Willy Loman’s suicide. The second is the 1931 action which moves on through a series of scenes that ends with Biff’s discovery of his father with a woman at a hotel in Boston. This play is concerned with the tension between the external reality and the protagonist’s private inner world. The original title chosen by Arthur Miller for this play is The Inside of His Head. Under his friends request, he changed it to the present title with a subtitle, “Certain Private Conversations in Two Acts and a Requiem”. Taking into consideration the play’s three titles, one would guess how far Miller relies onmemories and present events to reveal not only what his protagonist, Willy Loman, suffers from but the American society as well.

Abstract:
Since the late 2010s, when the Black Protests were sparked in Korea (September 2016) and the Constitutional Court of Korea ruled that criminalizing abortion is unconstitutional (April 2019), contemporarily and internationally produced films, series and documentaries focusing on abortion have been actively introduced to the Korean public alongside with the popularisation of global OTT services. Most of them explicitly or implicitly support women's choice and the right to abort, but they often perpetuate the suffering, shame, and victimization of women who undergo abortions. For exemple, they make maternal grief inseparable from the pregnant body, embody the excruciating physical suffering of the protagonist’s abortion to the point of making the audience shudder, or keep the protagonist (slut-)shamed, without cause, throughout the story of abortion experience. Erica Millar puts ‘emotion’ at the center of abortion politics, criticizing the politics of ‘choice’, whether anti-abortion or pro-choice, for naturalizing, depoliticizing, and normalizing desperation, grief, and shame as the experience of abortion. This article extends her ideas into the dimension of ‘affect’ and, building on Brian Massumi's discussion of politics of affect, explores affect via film, how anti-abortion power operates and the cinematic practices that resist it.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the teamwork in first-degree’s schools. This is a descriptive research based on observation and description of teams organisation through the views of actors of national education, in St. Martin Island first and then in Guadeloupe. The challenge is to study the impacts that will bring various elements chosen on the implementation of the teamwork in schools, as it is recommended by the minsterial official texts. This study is based on the model of Engeström. It’s a qualitative approach and which favours the use of semi-directive interview. The corpus consists of 80 inter- views, supplemented by four surveys. In a first part, the thesis concentrates on the functioning and the organization of the headmasters in schools, as manager of the teaching team. The second part is based on the accurate analysis of the initial and continuous training system of personal of education (headmasters, teachers and inspectors) in France and in the world. The observations of the teamwork in difficult areas will show if the geographical location of schools promotes the organisation of the staff that officiates in those places

The influence of the Oriel Noetics was crucial but that of John Keble and Hurrell Froude on the impressionable John Henry Newman and others was no less significant. A parting of the ways between those who would become Tractarians and the Noetics, first evident in the Peel election of 1829, was reflected in Oriel’s tutor dispute of 1830, giving a foretaste of the deepening divisions of the 1830s discussed in a later chapter.

Abstract:
This book recounts the amazing life story of a 16-year-old American Revolutionary-era soldier, including his captivity, adoption, and eventual flight to freedom from the Iroquois Six-Nation Indian tribes. The story is retold with historical accuracy and an even-handed treatment of the conflicting interests of the loyalists, Iroquois, and Patriots. David Ogden was born into an unusually tumultuous time in America—the colonials were struggling to throw off the yoke of British rule while also battling the Iroquois tribes for control of their ancestral lands. The bibliography of anyone who survived a life in the late 1700s frontier days of New York would be a great tale, but David Ogden’s story stands alone, even within historical context of his times. Captive! The Story of David Ogden and the Iroquois is a compelling true adventure story of one young colonial soldier’s bravery, choosing a daunting 126-mile race to freedom fraught with the risk of death over being assimilated into an alien society. This story is told with all the factual historical information that was missing from all the original captivity narratives, but accurately retains the flavor of the period and the voice of the 18th-century protagonist.

Abstract:
Chapter 3, continuing Chapter 2’s intellectual history of the impression, begins by exploring British aestheticism and its roots in Kant and romanticism (Walter Pater, Oscar Wilde, Immanuel Kant, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth). It then turns to twentieth-century theories of performativity, which, it argues, combine elements of the empiricist and the aesthetic (J. L. Austin, Jacques Derrida, Paul de Man, Judith Butler, J. Hillis Miller). James followed Pater in resurrecting the ‘impression’. Pater found in Hume’s impression a role for the imagination at the heart of consciousness. But the interpretive excesses of James’s protagonists’ cognitive impressions must also be understood alongside the more flamboyant aestheticism of Pater’s disciple Wilde, and his ‘critic as artist’. The most active of James’s impressions, however, are performative: they are impressions made, not received. Performativity helps frame an account of the impression that encompasses both the receiving and making of impressions, and the confusion between the two.

Abstract:
The third chapter takes up this tradition of the developmental novel (the bildung), and seeks to understand it in its canonical form in India. In this context, it looks at two of the most influential such novels in India, both published in the 1940s—Agyeya’s Shekhar and Ismat Chughtai’s The Crooked Line. The former, though essentially a story from childhood to the twenties of the protagonist also plays with the form of the novel—there is experimentation with non-linear storytelling, with fragmentation and ellipsis. Such techniques convey the darkness of the protagonist—the novel begins with the intimation that he is to be hanged (hanging also evokes the first chapter). Chughtai’s work is also a bildung, though in a playful mode that nevertheless invokes the difficulties of establishing a working-woman protagonist from a conservative milieu.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the ways in which Sterne in Tristram Shandy may have anticipatedaspects of the concepts of 4E cognition. It sets Sterne into his historical-philosophic milieu, especially in the dualist traditions of Locke and Hume, and seeks to understand how Sterne’s narrative and its protagonist are living systems embodying cognitive worlds. Autopoiesis, the term used to describe systems capable of maintaining and reproducing themselves, is shown to be applicable to Sterne’s creation of a protagonist who cannot figure out who he is or how he got to be where he is. The chapter particularly emphasizes the runaway digressive loops driving Tristram’s cognitive mindset and demonstrates how the continual perturbations he experiences whenever he tries to get outside his own head disturb his self-organization. It shows that when Tristram aims to traverse the autopoietic borders he has set for himself, as he often does, he becomes progressively disturbed.

Abstract:
The first body chapter sets the stage for subsequent chapters by showcasing the different literary afterlives of Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer and Richard Wright's Native Son, texts that emblematize the divergent reception scripts that haunt later debates. Miller's novel was banned in the U.S. over explicit descriptions of the protagonist's sexual adventures, and the book catalyzed a legal process that cemented its status as a major literary event while securing Miller's reputation as an outsider genius. In contrast, in order to make Native Son its first work by an African American, the Book-of-the-Month Club required that several passages be removed from the manuscript to assuage concerns over cross-racial desire. The resulting expurgation not only diluted the novel's challenge to racialized sexual norms, but also diminished the psychological complexity of the main character Bigger Thomas while amplifying his pathological reputation, making the novel less innovative and its legacy more conflicted.

Abstract:
In Shoes (1916), Lois Weber re-examines the relationship between shoes and social mobility. Far from guiding the working-class protagonist’s progress, a pair of worn boots trap her into a moral compromise, which destroys her hope of future advancement, either romantically or socially. Weber’s investigation into wage inequality, the rights of women and the influence of consumer culture via footwear continues in The Blot (1921), which revisits the same plot in a lower middle-class milieu and expands on the theme. Here, shoes are again a danger to women, but also an indicator of genteel distress and a cheap, impractical commodity, good only for profiteering rather than practicality.

Abstract:
Explores recent animated films that embrace the idea that belonging to a community does not require conformity to social expectations, but rather builds on the protagonist’s individuality and seeming queerness. In box office hits like Ratatouille (Bird, 2007), Kung Fu Panda (Osborn and Stevenson, 2008), and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Lord and Miller, 2009), and in the lesser known Bee Movie (Hickner and Smith. 2007), The Tale of Desperaux (Fell and Stevenhagen, 2008), character development connects closely with food, which becomes the instrument of the heroes’ redemption even when it would initially appear to be the very cause of their social isolation. This raises the question: What models of acceptable adulthood – in terms of gender, class, ethnicity, and body image - does the interaction with food present to viewers, in particular children, who are arguably among the main marketing targets of these productions? Although cooking is still often culturally framed as an element of the domestic and feminine sphere, in these films food is not domestic or related to care work, and as such appears as more culturally acceptable for males.

Abstract:
The Civil War era posed profound challenges to the six presidents. There is widespread agreement that Abraham Lincoln met that test in a superlative manner while Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan responded to it abysmally. It is also widely held that Millard Fillmore's performance was pedestrian and James K. Polk's was unusually effective. This chapter reviews the way each of these protagonists rose, or failed to rise, to the challenges of his times. It then explores the ways in which the leadership criteria employed in this book figured in the period under consideration. It concludes by discussing a pair of theoretical issues implicit in Allan Nevins' assertion in the epigraph to this chapter that if the nation had “possessed three farseeing, imaginative, and resolute” chief executives “instead of Fillmore, Pierce, and Buchanan, the [Civil] War might have been postponed.”

Abstract:
Abstract: The search has as purpose to notice the importance of Christian Zervos (Argostoli 1889 – Paris 1970), a greek art historian and founder of the magazine and publishing house Cahiers d’art, that lived in Paris from 1907 to the end of his life) with Le Corbusier, inserted in the contest of Cahiers d’art. The exceptional versatility of Zervos’s mind had allowed him to realize, through Cahiers d’art, a intellectual environment that exceeded the ordinary publishing house of that period, beacuse it was enchanted and nourished by all sector of knowledge. Zeros, inside the Cahiers d’art, made Le Corbusier protagonist of the section of Architecture, that submits to Sigfried Giedion. In fact since the first number of Cahiers d’art the work of Le Corbusier was broadly taken in examination. The articles related to the work of the Architect have gone since 1926 to 1954; the themes that touch these texts can be separate in four major topics: design, private house, great public buildings, painting. Keywords: Cahiers d’art; Christian Zervos; projects. Abstract:
Farhadi’s The Salesman, which won the Best Screenplay award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and the Best Foreign Language Film in the 89th Academy Awards, got universal acclaim and behooved for academic debates. The intertextual references in The Salesman optimized with the film’s explicit references to Arthur Miller’s drama play, The Death of a Salesman. However, the director, Asghar Farhadi, includes more subtle intertextual references to attract the audience to some masterpieces of art. This study introduces referenced sources to emphasize parallels between Farhadi’s film and other literary and artistic works to determine the central themes of the movie in order to evaluate the protagonist and antagonist’s actions thoroughly and accurately. Out of The Death of a Salesman, the film establishes intertextual relations with plays such as Hamlet by Shakespeare and Out at Sea by Slawomir Mrozek, “The Cow” —a short story—by Gholam-Hossein Saedi, Gilemard—a novel—by Bozorg Alavi, and movies such as Shame by Ingmar Bergman and The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola. These intertextual relations are the film’s central conflict that should be evaluated in the realm of the challenge between tradition and modernity. In addition, of course, various manifestations of such resistance are reflected in the facedown between the past and the future.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Finalment, s’interpretarà l’impacte assolit per URBAN, emprant com a indicador l’anàlisi de diferents casos d’estudi de ciutats angleses, espanyoles, franceses i italianes One of the most notable effects of the economic restructuring undertaken in Europe during recent decades has been the intensification of processes that give rise to urban poverty and social exclusion. This has led to the reinforcing and sharpening of social inequalities and spatial segregation and to the consolidation of a dichotomous urban reality. Situations of social exclusion have tended to concentrate in urban areas that have suffered major processes of degradation and which have levels of quality of life and economic opportunity that are appreciably inferior to those of their nearest urban neighbours. Several European cities are currently working towards the creation of a model of sustainable and more socially just urban development and towards providing responses to the challenges and special needs of neighbourhoods with difficulties. This initiative forms part of what are known as integrated intervention programmes. These programmes explicitly share the will to take appropriate action to influence the many variables that configure and explain situations of urban marginality. They do not only propose interventions aimed at physically transforming space, but also dedicate special attention to the different factors that interact to determine the social and economic configuration of urban space. The integrated approach implies improving on the classical model of sectorial division. The elements that channel public responses are not responsibility and competence frontiers, but rather the deficits and opportunities manifested by a given urban area. This new model for intervention has gained increasing protagonism, both in the political agendas of various European states and regions and in the European Union itself. In 1994, the EU established the URBAN Community Initiative. The general objectives of this programme were related to the need to take measures against the loss of quality of life in certain parts of cities and to take action to promote the socioeconomic and environmental revitalisation of urban areas with difficulties. To date, two editions of URBAN (1994-1999 and 2000-2006) have permitted the co-financing of 188 programmes in 15 EU member states. In this communication, we will present the results of research relating to the URBAN Community Initiative, specifically focusing our attention and analysis on the model for urban reality that it proposes. This model is characterised by the way in which social, economic and environmental questions are addressed from an integrated approach, which serves as a mechanism for providing better responses to local problems. Finally, we will analyse the impact that the URBAN has achieved, using case studies based on British, Spanish, French and Italian cities as indicators in this analysis.
