Abstract There is general agreement among media and communication scholars that a monumental shift is occurring in the media and communication habits of young people. In the present paper, this shift is discussed within the framework of a long-term study of six samples of Icelandic youths, covering a period of 35 years. A persistent decline in use of the “old” media, such as books, newspapers and radio is demonstrated, while the social role of television is shown to be undergoing a transformation comparable to what happened to book reading centuries earlier. All this is discussed in the light of the onslaught of new technologies and new media of communication.

Abstract:
AbstractThe changes in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current system associated with the Polar, sub-Antarctic and Subtropical Fronts in the Atlantic are examined in a ten-member ensemble using the Community Earth System Model. Results for the ensemble average mean show that the Polar Front at 25°W shifts to the south by 0.8° during 1970–2000 compared to its mean latitude over the period 1050–1950. This shift is significant because it is more than twice the standard deviation of the mean latitude time series during 1050–1950. The shift is caused by a slight southward displacement of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which in turn is caused by a southward shift in the latitude of the maximum zonal wind stress. The sub-Antarctic Front also shows a small southward shift after 1970, with a maximum latitudinal displacement of 0.2°. However, this shift is not significant compared to the standard deviation of the time series during 1050–1950. The Subtropical Front does not change its latitude during 1970–2000 compared to 1050–2000 because there is very little change in the wind-stress curl in the subtropics. Differences in temperature and salinity throughout the water column at 25°W reveal that during 1970–2000 there is freshening of Antarctic Intermediate Water, whereas the Circumpolar Deep Water becomes saltier.

Abstract:
Achieving Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5 still remains a challenge to Nepal. It is necessary to collect reliable evidence on maternal health for tackling MDG 5 with limited resources. A continuous assessment of maternal mortality is required to assure the progress towards the MDG 5. This study aims to assess the results of the different studies on maternal mortality in Nepal. The results published in PubMed, Lancet, Medline, WHO and Google Scholar web pages from 1990 to 2012 have been utilized to prepare this paper. In spite of the low proportion of births attended by skilled persons and institutional delivery, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Nepal has declined drastically between the years 1990 and 2011, from 850 to 229 deaths per 100,000 live births. In recent years, Nepal is also reaching progress in different maternal health indicators such as mothers receiving antenatal care from skilled providers (60%- up from 24% in 1996). More than one-third births in the past five years have been assisted by skilled care providers. Nearly, 45% of women received postnatal care for their last birth in the first two days after delivery, 38% of women is aware of abortion which has been legalized since 2003.Though maternal health is a priority agenda of Nepal among the policy makers and the country is likely to achieve Millennium Development Goal 5 by the year 2015, there is still a wide gap between policies and charted targets, and the real accessibility and availability of the quality health services. Abstract:
Starting with an analysis of the significance of the French New Wave for postmodern cinema, this essay sets out to make a study of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia (1999) as the film that marks the beginning of what could be considered a paradigm shift in American cinema at the end of the 20th century. Building from the muchdebated passing of postmodernism, this study focuses on several key postmodern aspects that take a different slant in this movie. The film points out the value of aspects that had lost their meaning within the fiction typical of postmodernism—such as the absence of causality; sincere honesty as opposed to destructive irony; or the loss of faith in Lyotardian meta-narratives. We shall look at the nature of the paradigm shift to link it to the desire to overcome postmodern values through a recovery of Romantic ideas.

Abstract:
In this article, Katie Normington outlines the increasing interest in Meyerhold's work and assesses previous applications of his methods to contemporary production work. She goes on to consider how working as movement director for Red Shift Theatre Company's adaptation of Herman Melville's short story, Bartleby, enabled research into the application of Meyerhold's system of Biomechanics. Rehearsals for Bartleby combined actor-training and text rehearsals so that the Stanislavskian-trained actors gained ownership of biomechanical principles and could apply aspects to their independent exploration. This article analyzes the results of the work, and concludes that Meyerholdian techniques developed a physical architecture for the performance which, even during an arduous tour, maintained the clear shape and rhythm of the production. The use of principles such as rakurs, often neglected within present-day experimentation, proved to be essential in providing actors with a sense of composition and an awareness of their bodies in space. However, aspects such as facial expression and emotional excitability require further investigation. Katie Normington is Senior Lecturer in Drama at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Abstract:
This work presents updated reconstructions of watershed runoff to San Francisco Estuary from tree-ring data to AD 903, coupled with models relating runoff to freshwater flow to the estuary and salinity intrusion. We characterize pre-development freshwater flow and salinity conditions in the estuary over the past millennium and compare this characterization with contemporary conditions to better understand the magnitude and seasonality of changes over this time. This work shows that the instrumented flow record spans the range of runoff patterns over the past millennium (averaged over 5, 10, 20 and 100 years), and thus serves as a reasonable basis for planning-level evaluations of historical hydrologic conditions in the estuary. Over annual timescales we show that, although median freshwater flow to the estuary has not changed significantly, it has been more variable over the past century compared to pre-development flow conditions. We further show that the contemporary period is generally associated with greater spring salinity intrusion and lesser summer–fall salinity intrusion relative to the pre-development period. Thus, salinity intrusion in summer and fall months was a common occurrence under pre-development conditions and has been moderated in the contemporary period due to the operations of upstream reservoirs, which were designed to hold winter and spring runoff for release in summer and fall. This work also confirms a dramatic decadal-scale hydrologic shift in the watershed from very wet to very dry conditions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries; while not unprecedented, these shifts have been seen only a few times in the past millennium. This shift resulted in an increase in salinity intrusion in the first three decades of the 20th century, as documented through early records. Population growth and extensive watershed modification during this period exacerbated this underlying hydrologic shift. Putting this shift in the context of other anthropogenic drivers is important in understanding the historical response of the estuary and in setting salinity targets for estuarine restoration. By characterizing the long-term behavior of San Francisco Estuary, this work supports decision-making in the State of California related to flow and salinity management for restoration of the estuarine ecosystem.

Subject area Strategic marketing, Downturn, Optimal utilisation of minimal resources, Consolidating profitability, Focus shift from features to benefits and cost savings. Study level/applicability Management students who have knowledge of basic concepts of management discipline to derive the maximum benefit and understand the applicability; budding entrepreneurs; middle- and senior-level executives in an executive development program; people running family-owned businesses. Case overview In 2008-2009, the Indian manufacturing sector was facing stiff competition from China on account of the latter's ability to provide cheap labour and handle large volumes. The 2008-2009 economic down turn saw consumers cut down on their requirements with manufacturing companies getting fewer orders. Manufacturing companies therefore adopted the principle of optimal utilisation of minimal resources. Millennium Company Ltd (MCL) also succeeded in overcoming the 2008-2009 downturns through a shift in focus during the recession of 2009 from achieving pure revenue to consolidating its profitability. MCL is probably the only company in the world to have extensive expertise in both steam and control instrumentation. The dual expertise allows them to engineer industry-specific systems that focus on energy efficiency and utilities management for sectors as diverse as textiles, food processing, paper, power and chemicals etc. The company shifted its attention from features to benefits, cost savings, and profitability. MCL trained its people as to what to talk to whom. Today, MCL is a leader in India in process efficiency and energy conservation through technology tie-ups and focused investments in manufacturing and research. Expected learning outcomes The purpose of this case is to enable student managers to evaluate effectiveness of corporate strategies; make the student managers understand the resources–businesses–systems framework and the need for focused connection between these three through appropriate coordination and control mechanisms for a corporate strategy to deliver value; encourage students to apply their knowledge of Turnkey Projects, BCG/Porters/SWOT/Mackensys Model; encourage the students to research and find out how other companies in this field fared and what were the strategies adopted by them to overcome the recession and compete with MCL in a highly competitive market like that of India; and encourage student managers to go on field visits with the institute's help to similar organisations within the same city and if possible get live projects. Growing urban populations and the increasing prevalence of the millennial generation are profoundly changing personal travel behaviors and patterns. As a result, cities, planners, and developers must understand and act upon the shifting preferences and expectations of these public transit users in order to align costly public transit services with user needs in efficient ways. While public transit systems are becoming an increasingly vital part of urban life, few jurisdictions have considered the need to tailor these systems to millennials – those most likely to incorporate public transit into their daily lives. This paper examines the travel behaviors of University Students engaged in a forced travel intervention caused by a sudden relocation of their work site. The change in work location encouraged the use of a free public transit system as means of commuting. Longitudinal survey results, taken pre and post-intervention, indicate statistical differences between transit preferences and actual habits related to transit use and other modes of travel. Survey findings suggest that there is a statistically significant difference between the stated willingness and actual travel behaviors of public transit users and of drivers, and that modal shifts can assist in overcoming the attitude/behavior split related to personal travel among millennials.

Abstract:
The Uncanny Child in Transnational Cinema illustrates how global horror film depictions of children re-conceptualised childhood at the turn of the twenty-first century. By analysing an influential body of transnational horror films, largely stemming from Spain, Japan, and the US, Jessica Balanzategui shows how millennial uncanny child characters resist embodying growth and futurity, unravelling concepts to which the child's symbolic function is typically bound. The book proposes that complex cultural and industrial shifts at the turn of the millennium resulted in these potent cinematic renegotiations of the concept of childhood. By demonstrating both the culturally specific and globally resonant properties of these frightening visions of children who refuse to grow up, the book outlines the conceptual and aesthetic mechanisms by which long entrenched ideologies of futurity, national progress, and teleological history started to waver at the turn of the twenty-first century.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter maps the field of international organizations (IOs) in food that has been institutionalized as a global policy field since WWII and has undergone several shifts since then. The chapter traces the emergence of the major IOs of the field, especially the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Bank, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the World Food Program, and more recently also the International Labor Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. The second half of the twentieth century began with visionary ideas about the global regulation of food production and consumption, moved to a concern with smallholders and food security, and ended with a neoliberal shift away from production toward ensuring consumption through world trade. The new millennium is marked by a rhetorical consensus between the main IOs, new debates about production, hopes in the social protection agenda, as well as increasingly vocal organized critics of the dominant order.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the period when Greece was essentially a minor province of the Christian Roman empire of Byzantium. During “The Dark Ages,” there was a very slow and uncertain shift from a society organized according to the principles of the ancient world—a world of half-autonomous cities—to one dominated by the Byzantine Empire. The chapter first describes the upheavals that disrupted the empire during the first half of the seventh century before discussing how it regained stability during the late seventh and eighth centuries. It then considers the disastrous results of the Fourth Crusade for the empire and the emergence of Byzantium as a theocracy. It also examines how Byzantium reclaimed the provinces of Greece and how the Slavs were integrated into Byzantine society. It concludes with an overview of Byzantine economy, society, and culture during the period as well as the legacy of the Byzantine Empire.

With the 1988 consolidation that brought the BSW program that had been housed at Clark College to the School, and the 1983 addition of the PhD program, the School now awarded the social work degree at all levels of the BSW, MSW, and PhD. Curriculum renewal during this period saw a shift from a from the generalist approach to the advanced clinical concentration, becoming again like all other schools of social work, a change that was influenced as much by the Council on Social Work Education’s reaffirmation requirements as by professional trends favoring micro practice. The “Republican Revolution” and the enactment of 1996 welfare reform bill resulted in the abandonment of the safety net philosophy, even as poverty rates soared upward. The aftermath of the election of America’s first African American president dispelled then myth of America as a post racial society, with resurgence of hate groups operating under a banner of white nationalism and white supremacy.

Abstract Selected as one of the 2001 ASME / IMECE industrial highlight sessions, this panel focuses on the paradigm shift from the traditional capstone design course structure towards new design experiences formulated through industry-university educational partnerships. Such partnerships feature collaboration of multidisciplinary student, faculty and industrial teams for product and process realization. The two-session symposium addresses the following topics: • Integrated product and process design • Modern design methodologies integration • Frameworks for university and industrial partnerships • Recruitment, student profiles, graduation and placement • Effective evaluation of student, team and project • Grading and motivation techniques • Program assessments and outcomes • Implementation, institutionalization, and sustainability strategies The ten-person panel brings together a group of faculty, program administrators, students and industrial sponsors from three different undergraduate engineering programs incorporating the new industry-university educational partnerships. The panel discussion highlights the attributes, pros/cons, obstacles/challenges, lessons learned, intellectual property issues, project failure drivers, role of industrial liaisons, recruitment, the effect on faculty and student participants, and program outcomes. The university programs represented are Brigham Young University, University of Florida, and Lehigh University. The symposium organizers extend many thanks to the panelists and session chairs for providing the program content and energized discussions required for making this panel and symposium a success. Last but not least, R. Keith Stanfill’s continual behind-the-scenes leadership and assistance in bringing together the key elements of the program is greatly appreciated.

Abstract:
Introduction: Identifying factors that contribute to occupational accidents has been a general concern of companies in the present millennium. One of the factors identified is the quality and quantity of food, as well as meals times. In this context, the present systematic review aimed to identify how food intake influences the occurrence of accidents in shift work, with some focus, although not exclusive, on the mining industry. Methodology: The research-based literature was carried out in four electronic databases: Medline/PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science. Have been combined the following words “occupational accident” and “food intake”; “mining injury” and “food choice”; “meal timing” and “workplace”; “eating at night” and “mining injury”;“Circadian rhythm” and “diet shift”; “Food safety” and “ Health risk”; “workplace accidents” and “food choice”. Results: It was possible to identify 24 articles related to food intake. To better understand the analysis, the results were organized into five groups: Author surname and year, Study type, Accidents/injury causes, risk factor, Conditions for accidents/injuries to occur. Through the groups of causes, it was possible to regrouped on three, which facilitated the discussion of the topic; food choice n=10 (42%) articles, eating habits n=9 (37.5%), and emotional commitment n=5 (20.5%), showed the relativity of food intake causes for the occurrence of accidents and illnesses in shift workers. Discussion: The reviewed articles demonstrated that the materialisation of accidents was due to the relationship between food intake and consumption of nutrient-poor foods in shift work. That can develop chronic diseases, metabolic disorders such as blood pressure abnormalities, blood sugar fluctuation (dyslipidemia, dysglycemia), and obesity, neurobehavioural performance. Foods contain high content As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Fe, and Mn above the recommended standards by the FAO/WHO. Sleep disturbance during the 12-hour shift interferes with circadian rhythm and, consequently, with performance. These factors can be related to food and the precarious physical environment, increased workload, fatigue and poor diet, especially at night. Conclusion: In conclusion, the study demonstrated how food intake impacted workers' health on shifts but did not determine the causes or risk factors contributing to accidents/injuries. Further studies are needed to demonstrate a direct relationship which the risk factor of food intake and causes accidents/injuries.

Abstract:
Abstract In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly set up the Sustainable Development Goals as a follow up on the Millennium Development Goals and a masterplan to attain a better and more sustainable world by the year 2030. One of these goals (SDG 7), seeks to achieve affordable and clean energy for all the world's population by the year 2030. As a result, global efforts are being made to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to limit pollution as well as enhance the development of renewable energies such as solar, wind, hydrothermal amongst others into the worlds energy system. The oil and gas industry has played a vital role in meeting the world's energy demand to date. 60% of world energy consumption was supplied by the oil and gas industry for year 2020 and as this demand keeps rising, the industry will continue to play this vital role in powering and enabling industries. Therefore, even as the world clamours for a shift from a world powered by fossil fuels to one sustained by green energy, the success of this global energy transition would still be heavily dependent on the drivers and players of fossil fuel technology. As such, there is a need for the African oil and gas industry to realize that although it may no longer be business as usual, this shift presents an opportunity for the industry to contribute to the emerging energy mix as well as correct negative perceptions the general public might have of the industry. To remain relevant, companies must adapt, invest in renewable energy research and development and build on existing technology. This paper explores and gives insight into the ways oil and gas companies have begun harnessing renewable energy in their operations, challenges being faced to reduce carbon emissions to achieve net zero and how hydrocarbon production operations can be done in a more environmentally safe manner. To strengthen this cause, stakeholders, policy makers and engineers in the African clime must investigate the dynamics, parallels and interdependency between conventional and renewable energy, to be strategically positioned to play a key role in the transition to a more sustainable future.

Abstract:
Abstract With the approach of the new millennium and the emergence of the global market, significant restructuring of university education in general, and science and engineering education in particular, is taking place with the objective of preparing the students for the new social and economic order. The paradigm shift and emerging trends in engineering education demand a holistic integration of “soft” and “technical” skills. There is also an emphasis on “educational outcomes” as evidenced by student design projects and other outcome evaluation criteria. “Service-Learning”, an approach that endeavors to integrate “community service” and “student learning” has found wide acceptance in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Implemented in a novel and creative fashion, it may well provide an effective pedagogical tool consistent with the new paradigm of engineering education. The design project described in this paper integrates both “Service-Learning” and “Design Project” requirements in the first course in “Engineering Mechanics” offered at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), Engineering Program. One of the desired “outcomes” of the course is that the student not only understands the theory as discussed in class but also learns to apply the knowledge to develop and design engineering products useful for the society. The project demonstrates the development of a device that visually reinforces concepts related to Newton’s laws of motion and mechanical advantage in simple machines (lever arms, pulley systems, and springs), in consultation with a science and mathematics teacher in a local high school. In the future, the device will be utilized in the school and benefit education efforts not only at the high school level but also in the elementary and middle schools. It is anticipated that it will also help introduce the field of Engineering to school students. During the implementation of the project, other learning outcomes were accomplished in concert with the demonstration of application of engineering mechanics and providing service to the community. The student has reflected that the project has helped him in realizing the “role” of the customer in engineering design, developing a clear perception of constraints in space, time and budget in implementing projects, and improving communication skills. It has also given him a better appreciation of the role of engineering in society and helped his inner growth as an individual and a citizen.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Massage refers to a wide range of techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, tapping, friction, and vibration, yielding pressure on soft tissues done manually or with devices. Nowadays, massage is widely used in everyday life, sport, and medical care as a complementary and alternative therapy. Although its millenniums of use, there is very little research on its effects on health and disease conditions. As one of the main reasons for this can be pointed out, research methods, most of which need special equipment, and different professionals, are subjective or invasive. Recently, some studies have assessed the physical and physiological effects of massage, such as electroencephalography (EEG). EEG is a rapidly non-invasive test that provides evidence of how the brain functions over time. EEG matured over the decades due to advances in technology. Now it has greater sensitivity, digital recording on hard drives, allowing different processing, and are developed consumer-grade devices, which provide easier obtaining of EEG signals outside of the traditional laboratory settings. Advanced dry wireless headsets enable the use of EEG diagnostic in a natural environment at home, working place, sports halls, fields, etc. EEG has been used for the evaluation of effectiveness and in the comparison between different massage processes. Research investigating the physiological effects of massage therapy with EEG has suggested that massage therapy reduces anxiety, increases frontal delta activity, decreases frontal alpha and beta activity, shifts frontal alpha asymmetry from right-hemisphere dominance to left-hemisphere dominance, increases resting-state alpha activity in the left anterior cingulate cortex, etc. Conclusion: Together, these findings provide evidence that massage therapy acts to modulate EEG activity and that EEG diagnostic can be a useful non-invasive, and accurate, objective research method for investigation and illustration of massage therapy effects.

Abstract:
By the new millennia gas turbine technology standards the size of the first gas turbines of Von Ohain and Whittle would be considered small. Since those first pioneer achievements the sizes of gas turbines have diverged to unbelievable extremes. Large aircraft turbofans delivering the equivalent of 150 megawatts, and research micro engines designed for 20 watts. Microturbine generator sets rated from 2 to 200kW are penetrating the market to satisfy a rapid expansion use of electronic equipment. Tiny turbojets the size of a coca cola can are being flown in model aircraft applications. Shirt button sized gas turbines are now being researched intended to develop output powers below 0.5kW at rotational speeds in excess of 200 Krpm, where it is discussed that parasitic frictional drag and component heat transfer effects can significantly impact cycle performance. The demarcation zone between small and large gas turbines arbitrarily chosen in this treatise is rotational speeds of the order 100 Krpm, and above. This resurgence of impetus in the small gas turbine, beyond that witnessed some forty years ago for potential automobile applications, fostered this timely review of the small gas turbine, and a re-address of the question, what are the effects of size and clearances gaps on the performances of small gas turbines?. The possible resolution of this question lies in autopsy of the many small gas turbine component design constraints, aided by lessons learned in small engine performance development, which are the major topics of this paper.
