Perlaky, Andreas. "Russia's intervention in the modern Syrian conflict : A small contribution to understand Russian warfare in Syria through the lense of hybrid warfare theory." Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-10056.

Abstract:
Russian warfare is one of the most currently debated topics between military experts. Some define it as something wholly new and name it hybrid warfare. Others say that hybrid warfare is nothing but an old method brought back to life. Some experts also argue that any nation at war will use any method to win, regardless of being a defender or aggressor. One thing, however, binds these experts together—the will to understand Russian warfare.  Hybrid warfare uses both state and non-state actors together to achieve a common goal. Because of mixing these actors, it becomes hard to define further. Because of that, experts still struggle to understand Russian warfare and the use of hybrid warfare. Thus allowing Russia to continue to act within the grey area between a state of neither peace nor war.  By analysing Russia’s intervention in the ongoing conflict in Syria with Lewickis military and non-military dimensions. This study shows that Russian warfare and its actions in Syria are based more on international reputation. When there is a risk for tarnished reputation, they act through non-state actors. When there is a chance for improved reputation, they act through state actors. This study also shows that there are fundamental differences in what Russia does officially and unofficially, which is also based on international reputation.

Abstract:
The dissertation seeks to modify, update and bring back the tradition of political theory which based its understanding of political in the state and the society mainly on the perspective of the military dimension. The dissertation argues this forgetfulness creates serious obstacles when trying to understand contemporary military changes and their wider implications. Historical turn of political science is seen as a way to make this update real. Historical notion of Military revolution is seen as specific conceptual “tool” that will make this turn. Using historiographical analysis development of military revolution, changing character of war, transformation of armed forces and development of American civil-military, military and police relations are discussed. American case is analysed because by being the most militarily advanced Western state this country had to felt first the effect of changes in state and society caused by military transformation.

Antonson, Mats. "Comprehensive Approach : Civil-militär filosofi eller allsidigt strategiskt koncept?" Thesis, Swedish National Defence College, Department of Military Studies, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-642.

Full text
Abstract:

Gray, Lisa A. "Exploring Dimensions of Well-Being among Spouses of Active-Duty Service Members." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3690.

Full text
Abstract:
During an era when the United States has been engaged in the longest waging wars in U.S. history, military families have been exposed to extraordinary amounts of stress and have had to learn to adapt in a culture where repeated deployments, recurrent family separations, and frequent relocations have become the norm. A surge in research in recent years on the families of Service members has brought increased attention to the unique challenges and demands of spouses, raising concerns about how to best meet their needs. Despite the increased attention, few studies have focused on spousal well-being. Acknowledging this lack of research, the present dissertation study utilized a mixed-methods approach to explore various dimensions of well-being, as directly experienced by spouses of active-duty military personnel. Data was collected from a web-based survey completed by 300 spouses of active-duty Service members. Quantitative data included a wide range of demographic, family, military lifestyle, and service utilization questions along with a battery of standardized instruments measuring various risk and protective factors, which represent components of well-being. Qualitative data were collected from four open-ended questions and analyzed thematically. Qualitative and quantitative components were corroborated in the final analysis. Results of the study found significant differences in well-being scores among subsamples of participants divided by employment status, race, and Service member rank. However, subsamples divided on the basis of having children, education level, and Service member combat deployment history did not result in significantly different well-being scores. Separate hierarchical regression analyses were performed on the outcome scores for each component of well-being (social, mental, and physical). The findings revealed that selected risk & protective factor variables were significant predictors within each model. On the other hand, socio-demographic characteristics only added to the predictive power of outcomes scores in the mental component of well-being. Qualitative findings included data on participants’ perspectives of the rewards and challenges of military life, the impact of the military lifestyle on parenting experiences, and advice to spouses new to the military lifestyle. Implications and limitations of this study, as well as suggestions for future research to enhance the well-being of military spouses, are discussed.

Helliker, Mark. "Degradation of fabrics used in military fragment protective clothing due to selected laundering regimes." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2018. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/13231.

Full text
Abstract:
With the introduction of fragment protective fabrics into combat clothing, there was a need to understand the effect of laundering on the performance of these fabrics. This thesis investigated the effect of typical laundering regimes on selected ballistic protective fabrics representative of those suitable for clothing applications. This study presents evidence that knitted silk and felted ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene retained their ballistic protective performance after laundering. The para-aramid fabrics showed significant improvement from laundering. The dimensional stability of the selected fabrics was affected by laundering and the effect was cumulative. The damage imparted to the fibres was determined to be due to mechanical wear. This mechanical wear was significantly increased when the fabrics were wet. This was due to the water increasing the friction between fibres during the laundering process. The fabrics investigated were shown to be suitable for use in fragment protective clothing, and were more robust than was generally considered.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis: The local dimensions of defence: the standing army and militia in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex 1649-1660. Par t l: Interregnum governments faced numerous threats to their security and military power: internally from Royalist conspiracies and political dissidence, and externally from the danger of a combined Royalist and foreign invasion. The Eastern Counties were of strategic importance to Interregnum governments because of their proximity to London and the Continent, and because of their considerable economic resources. Interregnum governments were able to maintain their control over the region, and draw upon its resources for defence through the region's local and central administrative structures. Part II: The first arm of the Interregnum system of defence was the standing army. This consisted first of the units of horse and foot stationed in the region. The horse were used primarily to respond quickly to internal threats. The foot were stationed in the region primarily to await embarkation for foreign service. The coast was protected by a series of fortifieti garrisons, the governors of which played a key role in coordinating the defence and security of the region. A uniform assessment was levied which provided a sound basis for the pay and supply of the standing forces. Part Ill: The standing army was complemented by the militia. Like the standing forces, the traditional county and borough forces were reorganized and put on a sound basis after the Civil War. The new organization provided the framework for local defence up to and after the Restoration. Within this framework, Interregnum gover nments experimented with various select militias, but with only limited success. Both the 'general' and 'select' militias were administered in the localities by a group of trusted appointees, who worked closely with the garrison governors, and later with the Major-Generals of 1655 and 1659 to coordinate the regions' defence and security. The financial structure of the militia was based on a uniform and statutorily defined scale of rates. Conclusion: Together the standing army and militia formed part of a single system comprised of three mutually dependent elements: the deployment of men and materials , the maintenance of security, and the raising of funds. The system was put on an efficient basis during the Interregnum and embodied the ideal of publicly uniform administration which characterized Interregnum government as a whole.

Abstract:
Louisiana developed an extensive system of levees throughout the Atchafalaya Basin and along its territorial Mississippi River. This system reached its zenith on the eve of the American Civil War. It went into dramatic decline following the conflict due to the confluence of military activity, protracted irregular warfare, and neglect stemming from labor and capital revolution. These shifts intensified with the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and finally consolidated after the ratification of Louisiana’s Constitution of 1879. The shift of responsibility for the construction and maintenance of levees during the Reconstruction Era led to many significant changes in the character and function of many of the State’s institutions as it struggled to adapt to the postwar order it confronted.

Visual perception modeling is generally weak for game AI and computer generated forces (CGF), or agents, in computer games and military simulations. Several tricks and shortcuts are used in perceptual modeling. The results are, under certain conditions, unrealistic behaviors that negatively effect user immersion in games and call into question the validity of calculations in fine resolution military simulations. By determining what the computer-generated agent sees using methods similar to that used to generate the human players' screen view in 3- D virtual environments, we hope to present a method that can more accurately model human visual perception, specifically the major problem of a entity "hiding in plain sight"

Abstract:
Abstract Nowadays constant competitiveness requires companies to become more effective and efficient, and ethics, along with labourer’s conduct, became a main issue. The need for creating plans to prevent corruption, to enhance professional conduct and ethics and to increase the responsibility of those who run public money -i.e. the financial resources of the State -is greater than ever. Being the Army a part of the State which is entitled a portion of the State’s budget it is of utmost importance that the Army makes use of its financial resources efficiently and effectively. Once the people in charge of managing the Army’s financial resources are trained inside the Army institution (with its rules, values and principles), would it make sense to talk about plans to prevent corruption, professional conductandethics? This study’s aim is to research the ethical dimension of financial management, i.e. its importance inthe definition of the skills’profile of the Military Administration officer. It is a studybased uponbibliographic research from books, magazines, articles and legislation, and also based upon the analysis of interviews and surveys to Military Administration officers. The resultsare therefore based on the opinion of thoseofficers. In order toperform itstasks well, the Military Administration officermust possess values such as integrity, responsibility andhonesty, and must always showhigh levels of competence, in order to respond tothe necessary requirements. Thus, to meet both current and future challenges inside the military institution, continuous training and constant updating must be a priority for Military Administration officers.

Abstract:
How has the EEAS affected, if in any way, the coherence of the CFSP on the vertical dimension in security and defence matters? In this thesis I answer this research question in order to draw a conclusion on the affect of the EEAS on the cooperation and coordination of the MS with and within the CFSP in security and defence matters. Coherence within the EU’s foreign policy is an issue that its leaders have emphasized on developing for more than four decades. The introduction of the EEAS through the Lisbon Treaty in 2009 is perceived to enhance the cooperation and coordination of the MS with and within the CFSP, as well as coordinate the actions of the MS outside the boundaries of the EU. By conducting a multiple case study, in this thesis I compare how the most powerful MS: the UK, France, and Germany, interacted with and within the CFSP in the 2003 Iraq War, and the 2011 military intervention in Libya. Relatedly, a qualitative content analysis approach is applied in order to uncover all relevant information from the primary and secondary literature concerning the two cases. In contrast to most of the previous studies conducted on this topic, I combine and apply the theoretical perspectives of liberal institutionalism and social constructivism in order to explain and explore the phenomenon under investigation. Conclusively, this thesis suggests that the coherence of the CFSP on the vertical dimension in security and defence matters has not been affected in any way after the EEAS has been implemented in the CFSP. This is due to the inherent characteristic of the MS of always prioritizing their national interests, determined by their value-based normative ideas gained through social interaction, before a collective, effective, and coherent CFSP in defence and security terms.

Bouzanda, Diassonama Kiesse. "Dimension militaire de la présence chinoise en Afrique noire : contribution à l’étude de l’outil militaire dans la politique étrangère des Etats." Thesis, Lyon 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LYO30015.

Full text
Abstract:
The reinforcement of China presence in Africa particularly constitutes a remarkable event during the first decade of the twenty-first century. As the matter of fact, China has become an important partner in various domains of cooperation such as trade, military, culture…This is hereby the reason why this study is essentially based on the military dimension of China presence. This aspect is barely analyzed in comparison with those of the USA, France, and the USSR in the past. The study deals with the Chinese strategic Policy and the theories of international relations. It intends to decipher what is at stake, the ins and outs of the Chinese military Policy in a context where upheavals and strategic conflicts are pregnant (1960-2010). Moreover, the study will analyze different strategic choices that have been taken so far. This effort of analysis will not only concern China, but Africa will be fully taken into account as well. The reflection will stretch onto the analysis of decisions inherent to the foreign Policy, notably thanks to an approach that can be qualified as a ‘hybrid approach’, that is, a combination of a rational pattern and the bureaucratic approach of decision. Then, in the Chinese and African cases, the decision in foreign policy is not only the prerogative of the president, although he allegedly seems to be a pre-eminent actor. A lot of actors partake in the foreign Policy elaboration; these ones have real capacities to curb it either way

Soldiers need to carry personal equipment and military products at ordinary times or in training. Under high-intensity and high load military activities, their feet bear much more pressure than ordinary people. The research found that the long-time load will change foot structures and cause foot injuries which play a negative role in training effects. Therefore, as for soldiers, foot health and protection should be put emphasis on. However, the domestic design of military footwear has not taken the influence of load exerting on the foot into consideration, thus, it’s necessary to discuss the effects of load playing on the foot. The research recruited 30 male military personnel as research subjects and observed the change of foot type of right foot under slight weight-bearing load, half weight-bearing load, half weight-bearing load of front and half weight-bearing load of back with the application of 3D scanning measurement technique and then calculated 25 foot dimensions. We can learn from the research that the measurement size of foot under light load was significantly different from those under 3 other loads and the length and width would increase with weight growth; the height reduced relatively and the girth kept the same. Later, we found from one-way analysis of variance that the load had significant effects on “Maximum Heel Width, Width at Distal Instep, Width at Short Heel Girth, Arch Height, Short-Heel Height, Instep Height, Max. Toe Box Height, Height of the Most Medial Point of Medial Malleolus, Height of Sphyrion”. Among them, the foot arch height changed the most and the research analyzed the influence of weight-bearing position playing on the foot with Post-hoc Test, from the research findings, we can conclude that the loads on font and back foot have no significant difference on foot size. This research aims at providing academic references for the designs and improvements of footwear, shank fillers and other relevant products based on the analysis results of size changes of foot.

Research on military families has increased since the beginning of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; however, the research focuses on military families is general with little specific information on Black families within the military. Given the known general impact of race, this is a critical gap in the research into military families. This qualitative descriptive study explores the life of Black daughters in military families by examining the challenges and benefits of growing up as a Black daughter in a military family. There were three primary research questions asked of the participants about their experiences: 1) What challenges did you experience growing up in a military family; 2) What benefits did you experience growing up in a military family; and, 3) Do you believe that being Black affected the challenges and benefits you experienced? If so, in what way(s)? The participants also answered two additional questions of importance to social workers and health practitioners who work with military families: 1) What advice would you give to social workers who work with military families?; and, 2) What advice would you have for the military to help families address the challenges you have mentioned? The answers to the primary research questions are reviewed through the Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity (MMRI), models of systems theory, mettle, adaptability, and transformability. Consideration of the “Strong Black Woman” perspective is also examined. A look at the roles that women play as well as roles imposed on women by others is explored. Implications for social workers, health practitioners, and schools of social work are discussed, inclusive of military family culture and the importance of cultural competence in considering the intersections of a person’s life: racial identity in addition to military implications.

With the development of Internet technology and the popularity of various types of mobile devices, Internet has become an indispensable source of information access. People often regard e-news as one of the best tool to obtain knowledge and understanding of current news. Due to the expansion of the semantic term or concept via query expansion, the related work on existing news retrieval can effectively improve the precision rate or the recall rate. However, query expansion always raises the amount of the search outcome and resulted in the workload of information filtering for user. On the other hand, news classification is helpful for readers to focus on certain topics, but the outcome of news classification might not meet readers’ expectation. This study proposed a framework of multi-dimensional information retrieval for military news. In knowledge representation, based on the six elements of news, Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How(5W1H), this work not only introduced a framework of three dimensions information retrieval associated with user intent, temporal, and geographic location to closely meet the essence of news but increased temporal and geographical dimensions to speed up the convergence of user’s requirement. In problem solving, the source of military news is coming from the Ministry of National Defense, Military News Agency and Youth Daily. After the entity recognition of temporal and geographic data from the source of military news, the search keywords are used to retrieve the related news. The search outcome is represented by the APIs of visualization, timeline and google map, associated with the related news title and the statistical graphs about the occurrence time and places of news events to reduce the potential workload of information filtering for user and to lower the dissatisfaction of search result derived from misclassification of military news or the time of retrieval again.

Abstract In the wake of the Jing-Jin Program (Armed Forces Streamlining Program), the student body is dwindling. For existing post-exchange (PX), it is essential to improve its operational effectiveness by providing better service quality and gaining customers’ satisfaction. Choosing cleaners and other service businesses, Schvaneveldt has used KANO two-dimensional quality theory to categorize factors and contributes of service quality as to understand the influential factors of customer satisfaction. Latter, many scholars revised this characterization methodology. However, it is found in this study, after a thorough analysis by compiling associated material, that Schvaneveldt is more feasible by practice, though it is a simpler approach. In this study, based on Schvaneveldt’s research and papers on KANO two-dimensional quality theory, I analyzed different tributes of service quality and customer satisfaction to the Cleaner of the R.O.C. Military Academy by undertaking a questionnaire survey to a target audience. In addition, I also utilized Matzler’s quality improvement index to engage in six (each three) negative and positive quality adjustment and a second survey, comparing the differences between two cases in terms of tribute characterization and customer satisfaction. In this study, we found that the cadets of the R.O.C. Military Academy regarded service businesses they are rarely exposed to as service without quality difference and generic quality when they are frequently exposed to that service. There are obvious differences between the Academy Cleaner and other cleaners outside the campus in term of attractive quality. After operating adjustment, the tribute of service quality became unitary. This situation has had a huge difference between the Academy Cleaner and its civilian counterparts. Moreover, the customer satisfaction dropped from M=3.51 to M=3.44. It clearly showed that the operating adjustment deteriorated the customer satisfaction. This study confirmed that there are differences between expected results and final outcomes of particular operating adjustments. It suggests that KANO two-dimensional quality theory is helpful to decision-makers to abandon a take-for-granted mindset. Key word: KANO two-dimensional quality theory, service quality, and customer satisfaction.

Bergström, Helena. "13 years - Freedom or Security? : A theory testing case study about how cultural dimensions of job motivation are related to organizational structure in the military." Thesis, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-4783.

Abstract:
In a world where multinational cooperation and cross-cultural challenges are part of daily life, understanding cultures has become increasingly important. That people and organizations develop together might seem obvious, but that culture can be studied to understand the structure and approach of organizations, is perhaps less so. In this paper, a major structural difference in the armed forces of Germany and Sweden is examined; having to sign a contract to serve for 13 years or not having to sign a contract with service length restrictions. Hofstede's theory Dimensions of National Culture is applied to the case to see whether the cadets' motivation and behavior is affected by this major difference in the two otherwise very similar organizations. The study aims also to explore whether the findings can be considered correct given that semi-structured interviews were conducted to see if the thoughts of the cadets are in line with what the theory claims. The conclusion is that the theory can be used to understand how cadets' motivation and behavior supports the structural organizations present in Germany and Sweden. However, the interviews show that the theory is very generalizing and that not all cadets' thoughts are consistent with what the theory states in every case.
