Full textThis thesis analyzes the historical and institutional linkages between the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) and the Catholic Action Movement (CAM) between 1931 and 1971 in Chile. During this period, through the CAM the Chilean Catholic Chruch and the PDC became involved in the implementation of a trining project that aimed to form elites from the popular milieu. Based on an historic and institutional approach as well as the analysis of trajectories of social activists in a rual community of Chile, it seeks to explain the role of this educational policy in the social and territorial implantation of this party in rural areas. This educational policy was consolidated in the mass education programs to the government of Frei Montalva (PDC 1964-1970). These programs were based on two main pillars: development of different organizations involved in "Popular promotion", and mass-education that togrther produced the activists. They both contributed to the homogenization of the PDC by forming peasant leaders around values of conciliation as against notions of agrarian conflict, but also to the professional and social differenciation of activists by engaging diverse trends of professionalization and promoting multiple trajectories of social mobility at the local level. All these socialization instances have rezulted in diverse forms of politicization among the members of the AC (engagement in the PDC and in the movement of the revolutionary left Christian) while renewing the local elites of the PDC

Full textThis thesis shows how, in 1987-2007, Russian nationalism has been defined, conceptualized, studied and fought in Russia and several Western countries. I analyze the scholarly literature on post-Soviet Russian nationalism and specifically three approaches: the comparative study of fascism, "uncivil society," and the socio-analysis of ultranationalist parties. I go on to study the conceptual and cultural baggage that structures contemporary representations of Russian nationalism in Russia, and try to explain the strength and peculiar features of antifascist discourse there. I study the evolution of the terms of the debate (nationalism, fascism, racism, tolerance etc. ) and specifically the role of ethnographers in introducing new terms. I then discuss anti¬fascist organizations and activists in post-Soviet Russia, and end with an analysis of Russian anti-fascist discourse that compares it with anti-fascism in Germany and anti-racism in France and the United States
Bouadjadja, Jawad. "Un antiracisme à distance des racistes : ethnographies de quatre associations de lutte contre le racisme." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Paris Cité, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UNIP7238.
Full textThis thesis draws on an ethnographic investigation led between 2014 and 2017 among activists from four French antiracist organizations: the Conseil représentatif des associations noires de France, the Ligue internationale contre le racisme et l'antisémitisme, the Parti des Indigènes de la République and SOS Racisme. Utilizing anthropology of space, sociology of social movements and sociology of audiences, the thesis aims at exploring a unique aspect of French activism: the distance between antiracist activists and the people they deem racist. In other words, rather than looking at activist antiracism through the sole lens of fighting against racists, this thesis explores a fight without racists. This body of work thus questions the part of activist antiracism which amounts to avoiding any contact with racists. Through a study of organizations' premises and activist fields, of relationships maintained with racist opponents and non-racist audiences, this research endeavors to describe and comprehend the lack of both copresence and dialogue within the relations between activist antiracism and the people it deems racist. It also strives to question an obvious paradox: how do antiracists plan on contributing to ending racism if they keep away from racists ? In order to answer this question, this thesis unveils the way this distance can be seen by antiracists as a way to prevail against racists. By trying to convince a third-party non-racist audience to join in the antiracist fight, activist antiracism hopes to build a majority and become a compelling force which could silence racists
