Abstract:

Förändringar på arbetsmarknaden har medfört att anställda i allt större utsträckning upplever anställningsotrygghet. Syftet med föreliggande studie är att undersöka huruvida autonomi, deltagande i beslutsfattande och arbetsrelaterat socialt stöd kan moderera sambandet mellan anställningsotrygghet och framtida psykisk ohälsa samt bristande arbetstrivsel. En enkät besvarades av 181 anställda på en revisionsfirma vid två tillfällen. Resultatet av hierarkiska regressionsanalyser indikerar att kvantitativ och kvalitativ anställningsotrygghet predicerar bristande arbetstrivsel och att kvalitativ anställningsotrygghet även predicerar psykisk ohälsa. Varken autonomi över arbetsuppgifterna, deltagande i beslutsfattande, socialt stöd från kollegor eller från chefer dämpande dessa samband. Möjligen har tidigare tvärsnittsstudier överskattat den modererande effekten av arbetsrelaterad kontroll och socialt stöd.

Abstract:

Ökad osäkerhet på arbetsmarknaden har lett till att allt fler uppleveranställningsotrygghet, vilket har visats påverka både individ ochorganisation negativt. Samtidigt har transformativt ledarskapsammankopplats med positiva konsekvenser för både hälsa ocharbetsrelaterade attityder. Syftet med studien var att fastställasambanden mellan kvantitativ respektive kvalitativanställningsotrygghet och arbetstrivsel, organisationsengagemang ochpsykisk hälsa, samt att undersöka om transformativt ledarskap kanmildra dessa samband. En enkätundersökning som besvarades av 467medlemmar från ett fackförbund utfördes och därefter beräknades trehierarkiska multipla regressionsanalyser med arbetstrivsel,organisationsengagemang respektive psykisk hälsa som beroendevariabler. Studien erhöll negativa samband mellan kvalitativanställningsotrygghet och arbetstrivsel, organisationsengagemangrespektive psykisk hälsa, samt ett negativt samband mellan kvantitativanställningsotrygghet och psykisk hälsa. Undersökningen kundevidare påvisa att en hög grad av transformativt ledarskap mildradesambandet mellan kvantitativ anställningsotrygghet och psykisk hälsa.Eftersom anställningsotrygghet påverkar både individ ochorganisation är satsningar på transformativt ledarskap därmed bådeviktigt och betydelsefullt.

Abstract:

Denna uppsats behandlar två olika strategier för hur skuldproblematiken, som idag är utbredd

i många u-länder, ska kunna lösas. Världsbankens och IMFs strukturanpassningsprogram

(SAP), med dess tyngd på makroekonomisk stabilitet, beskrivs och analyseras. En slutsats är

att SAP inte löst skuldproblematiken och att de dessutom medfört ett antal allvarligt negativa

sidoeffekter som påverkat mottagarländernas kapacitet för framtida utveckling. För att råda

bot på detta har initiativ lett fram till att varje land ska utforma en egen utvecklingsstrategi

(PRSP), för att uppnå bättre resultat. PRSPs ligger till grund för budgetstöd som diskuteras i

uppsatsen och som är ett bidrag som går rakt in i mottagarlandets statsbudget. Trots vikt på

PRSPs ligger än idag mycket makt kvar hos Världsbanken och IMF, och mottagarländerna

uppvisar inte tillräckligt ägarskap.

Abstract:

Syftet med denna studie är att studera pedagogers styrningsstrategier i förhållande till barns lek. Vår ambition med studien var att problematisera de styrningsstrategier som framkom i en förskolas praktik. Forskningsfrågorna som låg till grund för studien var: Vilka styrningsstrategier i relation till barns lek är framträdande i en förskolas praktik? Hur kan pedagogers styrningsstrategier problematiseras utifrån barns lek? För att uppnå syftet och besvara forskningsfrågorna valde vi att göra ett strategiskt urval gällande studiens omfattning och antal deltagande. Undersökningen genomfördes på en förskola vid flera tillfällen genom videodokumentation. Det insamlade materialet analyserades och delades in i teman utifrån pedagogernas styrningsstrategier. Teorigenomgången som var till underlag för analysen belyser Michel Foucaults teorier om Governmentality som i stora drag innefattar alla maktprocesser i exempelvis skolan. I resultatet framkom det i de olika sekvenserna att det förekom styrningsstrategier i förskolans praktik på olika sätt. Huvudresultatet av vår studie var att pedagogernas styrningsstrategier verkade både explicit/ implicit, medvetet/ omedvetet och motiverat/ omotiverat. Eftersom det från pedagogernas håll många gånger är ofrånkomligt att påverka barnen och därmed styra deras handlingar i leken, så kom vi även fram till att styrningsstrategierna kan ses som en form av mild maktutövning, eftersom styrningen i det dokumenterade resultatet sker via subtila metoder, såsom blickar, närvaro etcetera. Oavsett i vilken riktning pedagogers handlande styr barns lek är styrningsstrategierna viktiga att få syn på, uppmärksamma och problematisera eftersom de påverkar barns lek och därmed deras utveckling. De situationer vi uppmärksammat och analyserat kan fungera som inspiration för andra pedagoger som vill arbeta självreflekterande och anta ett medvetet förhållningssätt.

Abstract:

Dagens komplexa försörjningskedjor försvårar informationsdelning mellan företag där främst kommunikationen brister. Inom livsmedelsbranschens färskvaruhantering kan detta få finansiella, sociala och miljömässiga konsekvenser. Teoretiskt har det visats att livsmedelsbranschen präglas av osäker efterfrågan och svårigheter i lagerhantering. Den komplexa interaktionen mellan efterfrågan, utbud, kapacitet och lager gör det svårt för företag att hitta en balans där en avvägning ofta måste göras mellan att ha ett överskott eller brist. Ett överskott innebär nöjda kunder men kan även innebär finansiella förluster och negativ påverkan på miljön genom matsvinn, medan en brist kan innebära förlorad försäljning och missnöjda kunder. Att efterfrågan är svår att förutspå samt kommuniceras felaktigt genom försörjningskedjan kan leda till att en bullwhip-effekt skapas vilket har negativa konsekvenser för samtliga aktörer i hela försörjningskedjan. Denna studie har således avsett besvara forskningsfrågan: Hur kan användningen av blockchain mildra bullwhip-effekten för färskvaror inom livsmedelsbranschen? Denna studie avser besvara dess syfte genom en kvalitativ forskningsmetod. Detta eftersom forskarna strävat att nå en djupare förståelse för problemområdet. För att skapa en uppfattning om hur bullwhip-effekten uppstår inom livsmedelsbranschens försörjningskedjor har teori kopplat till bullwhip-effekten och dess orsaker presenterats. För att vidare förtydliga de problem bullwhip skapar har även teori kring dess konsekvenser redogjorts för. Studien använder semi-strukturerade intervjuer där respondenterna verkar som producenter och återförsäljare i olika försörjningskedjor. De aktörer som intervjuats beskrev att de upplever diverse delar av problematiken bullwhip-effekten skapar, samt visade på att de själva, eller andra i deras försörjningskedja, bidrar till en risk för uppkomst av bullwhip. Vidare har intervjuerna visat att aktörer efterfrågar mer informationsdelning, där de framställt för- och nackdelar med detta. Nackdelarna som föreslogs av respondenterna ansågs kunna bemötas av studiens föreslagna blockchain-teknik. Studiens resultat visar att osäker efterfrågan samt en bristande kommunikation upplevs inom livsmedelsföretags försörjningskedjor vilket kan orsaka en bullwhip-effekt som blockchain-tekniken potentiellt kan mildra. Detta genom dess transparens, säkerhet och effektivitet i informationsutbyte. Den form av blockchain som anses lämpa sig bäst för ändamålet har varit privat blockchain.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse the institutionalized Swedish Psychiatric practice during the period 1850 and 1970 - the era of the large mental hospitals - in terms of a modem disciplinary project. Point of departure relates to the meeting between the admitted patient and the educational work of the mental hospital and its everyday practice. The main sources of information for this study consists among other things of case sheets and texts closely related to the work of the mental hospitals. The study has two important aspects. The first deals with the normalized procedures in the practice of mental care, and draws the attention to the relation between social and cultural standards and the way the mental hospitals reviews, treats and handles the patient. The second aspect deals with the actual administration and the techniques of the hospital to correct the patient and his/her actions in a desirable direction. An overarching discussion deals with the relation between liberating and Controlling practitioners, and how the Controlling power of the hospital relates to the modem society's conception of a independent man. At the same time as the physical coercion of the mental hospital diminished, controlling methods were required which were not merely based on obedience and Submission, but also on the participation and will of the patient. Informal system of rewards, confession-techniques as well as various forms of a conditionalised and regulated freedom is combined with a more concealed potential of coercion of the institution. The compulsory work is being analysed as the most important educational therapy - both socially and ethically. Work is being described as a liberal Controlling technique. By connecting work to the system of rewards as well as increased physical freedom enables the hospital to exercise control and predictability without resorting to coercion. How the hospital looked upon and handled the sexual body, and how cultural conceptions regarding sexual normality dominated the practical care-taking is being analysed with the starting point in case sheets. The sexual behaviour, especially concerning women, resulted in a meeting of different opinions between restraining and testing practitioners where moral reliability was a condition for physical freedom. The thesis describes a movement over time towards increased physical freedoms for the patients of the mental hospitals. This did not imply that the control or the normalization decreased in intensity. But rather that the forms and the conditions for these processes changed. The freedom that was placed in sight was always connected with the well behaviour of the patient.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the life and ministry of William Van Mildert (I765-I836) and his membership of the early nineteenth century High Church group known as the Hackney Phalanx. It considers Van Mildert's experiences before ordination and as deacon, priest and bishop, and their influence on his conception of the nature and mission of the Church of England. It relates the measures initiated by the Phalanx for reforming and extending the work of the Church to its members' understanding of their social and political context, and indicates some features of their shared theological position, particularly their ecclesiology. Among the undertakings of the Phalanx, the restructuring of the S.P.C.K, and the founding of new Church Societies to promote education and church-building receive particular attention. Van Mildert's labours as a member of the House of Lords are considered in detail, especially during his Durham episcopate (1826-36), when he was prominent in the unsuccessful opposition to Roman Catholic emancipation and to the Church Temporalities (Ireland) Act of 1833.The founding of Durham University owed much to Van Mildert, Besides contributing an estimated £10,000, he was closely involved both in developing the plans and in piloting the necessary legislation through Parliament. Van Mildert's theological writings are more notable for their extensive acquaintance with the work of earlier theologians than for originality: he disliked Innovation in matters of religion. Besides sermons and episcopal charges, he published Boyle Lectures taking a systematic view of the rise and progress of Infidelity and (while Oxford Regius Professor of Divinity) Bampton Lectures on the principles of Scripture-interpretation. He also produced a complete edition of the works of Waterland. Cited as a theological authority by the Oxford Movement, he nevertheless held aloof from the Movement’s beginnings.

Abstract:

Organisations have been under enormous pressure due to the changes that they are constantly faced with. Most organisations have at some stage been involved in restructuring, laying-off of employees, and outsourcing of non-core business activities with the aim of coping with the change process. When organisations go through these changes, they still need to support their employees. They must ensure that the employees' roles are clarified, and that they feel secure in their jobs in order to improve their commitment to the organisation. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between perceived organisational support, role clarity, job insecurity and organisational commitment. Employees from a business unit in a petrochemical organisation were targeted for this research. The study population included employees from managerial, non-managerial and specialist categories. A cross-sectional design was used to achieve the research objectives. Measures of Perceived Organisational Support (POSQ), Role Clarity (RCQ), Job Insecurity (JIQ), Affective Organisational Commitment (OCQ) and a biographical questionnaire were administered for the study. The statistical analysis was carried out with the help of the SPSS program as well as the AMOS program. Pearson product-moment correlations indicated that when perceived organisational support increases, affective organisational commitment and role clarity will also increase. When perceived organisational support increases, role conflict and job insecurity will Vll decrease. Affective organisational commitment as well as role clarity is predicted by perceived organisational support. MANOYA analysis indicated that male employees experience higher levels of role conflict than their female counterparts. It seems that employees in first line management and professional categories experience significantly higher levels of perceived role conflict than employees in lower level positions. Employees in non-management positions experience significantly higher levels of affective job insecurity than employees in senior management positions. Employees in senior management positions experience significantly lower levels of cognitive job insecurity than employees in non-management positions. Recommendations were made for future research.

Abstract:

The current global scenario is such where impact on the environment is becoming a rising concern. Global automotive manufacturers have focused more towards hybrid and electric vehicles as both more aware customers and governmental legislation have begun demanding higher emission standards. One of the many ways that Volvo Car Group approaches this trend is by mild hybridization which is by assisting the combustion engine by a small electric motor and a battery pack. A smart energy management strategy is needed in order to get the most out of the benefits that hybrid electric vehicles offer. The main objective of this strategy is to utilize the electrical energy on-board in such a manner that the overall efficiency of the hybrid powertrain becomes as high as possible. The current implementation is such that the decision for using the on-board battery is non-predictive. This results in a sub-optimal utilization of the hybrid powertrain. In this thesis, a predictive energy optimization tool is developed to maximize the utility of hybridization and the practical implementation of this tool is investigated. The optimization considers both the capacity as well as the thermal loadconstraints of the battery. The developed optimization tool uses information about the route ahead together with convex optimization to produce optimal reference trajectories of the battery states. These trajectories are used in a real-time controller to determine the battery use by controlling the adjoint states in the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy equation. This optimization tool is validated and compared with the baseline controller in a simulation environment based on Simulink. When perfect information about the road ahead is known, the average reduction in fuel consumption is 0.99% relative the baseline controller. Several issues occurring in the real implementation are explored, such as the limited computational speed and the length of the route ahead that can be predicted. For this reason the information input to the optimization tool is segmented and the resulting performance is investigated. For a 30 second segmentation of the future route information, the average saving in fuel consumption is 0.13% relative to the baseline controller. It is shown that the main factor limiting the amount of savings in fuel consumption is the introduction of the thermal load constraints on the battery.
Det nuvarande globala scenariot är sådant där miljöpåverkan håller på att bli en växande angelägenhet. Globala fordonstillverkare har fokuserat mer på hybrid- och elfordon, eftersom både mer medvetna kunder och statlig lagstiftning har börjat kräva högre emissionskrav. Ett av de många sätt som Volvo Car Group närmar sig denna trend är genom mild hybridisering genom att bistå förbränningsmotorn med en liten elmotor och ett batteripaket. En smart strategi för energihantering behövs för att få ut det mesta av de fördelar som hybrida elfordon erbjuder. Huvudsyftet med denna strategi är att utnyttja den elektriska energin ombord på ett sådant sätt att den totala effektiviteten hos hybriddrivlinan blir så hög som möjligt.Den nuvarande implementeringen är sådan att beslutet att använda det fordonsbaserade batteriet är inte-förutsägbart. Detta resulterar i en suboptimal användning av hybriddrivlinan. I denna avhandling är ett prediktivt Energioptimeringsverktyg utvecklat för att maximera nyttan av hybridisering och det praktiska implementerandet av detta verktyg undersöks. Optimeringen beaktar både kapaciteten och de termiska belastningsbegränsningarna hos batteriet. Det utvecklade optimeringsverktyg använder information om vägen framåt tillsammans medkonvex optimering för att producera optimala referenstrajektorier av batteritillståndet. Dessa trajektorier används i en realtidsstyrenhet för att bestämma batterianvändningen genom att kontrollera adjungerade tillstånden strategiekvationen för den ekvivalenta förbrukningsminimiseringen. Optimeringsverktyget verifieras och jämförs med den ursprungliga styrenheten i en simuleringsmiljö baserad på Simulink. När perfekt information om vägen framåt är känd, är den genomsnittliga minskningen av bränsleförbrukningen 0,99 % relativt den ursprungliga styrenheten. Flera frågor som uppstår i den verkliga implementeringen undersöks, såsom den begränsade beräkningshastigheten och längden på den väg framåt som kan förutses. Av denna anledning är segmenteras informationen till optimeringsverktyget och den resulterande prestandan undersöks. För en 30 sekunders segmentering av framtida väginformation är den genomsnittliga besparingen i bränsleförbrukningen 0,13 % i förhållande till den ursprungligastyrenheten. Resultaten visar att den viktigaste faktorn som begränsar bränsleförbrukningsbesparingen är införandet av de termiska belastningsbegränsningarna på batteriet.

Abstract:

Ziel des Projektes war es, die klinische Beeinträchtigung der chronisch mild und moderat hyponatriämen Patienten in einem longitudinalen Vergleich vor und nach Elektrolytkorrektur zu erfassen, um neue Therapieansätze in der Behandlung der als asymptomatisch eingestuften Erkrankung zu erlangen. Die Studie unterteilte sich in einen diagnostischen Teil, in welchem Spontanurin und eine Blutprobe analysiert, sowie die klinische Anamnese erfasst wurden, und einen experimentellen Teil, in welchem eine kognitive und neuromuskuläre Testung erfolgte. Die kognitive Untersuchung erfasste die Reaktionsschnelligkeit und Konzentrationsfähigkeit der Patienten. Hierfür standen die validierte Testbatterie zur Aufmerksamkeitsprüfung (TAP 2.0 für Windows) und das Softwarepaket Wiener Testsystem 32.0 zur Verfügung. Die neuromuskuläre Testung erfolgte mit Hilfe der Messplattform Balance-X-Sensor. Das Vorgehen war standardisiert und reproduzierbar. Zusätzlich wurde anhand eines Anamnesebogens die Ausprägung klinischer Zeichen einer symptomatischen Hyponatriämie erfragt (Kopfschmerzen, Konfusion, mentale Verlangsamung, Reizbarkeit, Streitsüchtigkeit, Desorientierung zu Zeit/Ort/Person, Müdigkeit, Leistungsfähigkeit, Schwindel, Übelkeit, Erbrechen, Gangunsicherheit, Stürze, Krämpfe) und abschließend Daten über die aktuelle Lebensqualität der Patienten mit Hilfe des SF-36 Fragebogens erhoben. Im Anschluss an die Testungen wurden die Patienten dazu angewiesen, ihren Natriumhaushalt mithilfe einer individuellen Medikation, die unter Beachtung der aktuellen Behandlungsrichtlinien ausgewählt wurde, zu korrigieren. Eine Wiedervorstellung der Patienten erfolgte nach 14 Tagen um die Testungen im elektrolytkorrigierten Zustand zu wiederholen. Ein longitudinaler Vergleich der Messergebnisse soll Aufschluss über das Ausmaß einer Veränderung bezüglich der Leistungsfähigkeit und dem Empfinden der Patienten geben. Um den Querschnittsvergleich mit einem gesunden Kontrollkollektiv zu ermöglichen, fanden die neuromuskulären und kognitiven Testungen ebenfalls mit normonatriämen, gesunden Probanden statt. Für den Querschnittsvergleich der Lebensqualitätsmessung diente die international anerkannte US-Kontrollpopulation aus dem Jahr 1998. Die Studie wurde zur übersichtlicheren Darstellung in zwei separate Arbeiten aufgeteilt. Der vorliegende Teil befasst sich mit der neuromuskulären Gleichgewichtstestung, sowie mit der Evaluierung der subjektiv empfundenen Lebensqualität der Patienten vor und nach Elektrolytkorrektur. Im Rahmen dieser Studie konnten Daten über das Gleichgewicht und die subjektive Lebensqualität von insgesamt 19 Patienten mit chronischer Hyponatriämie (121-133 mmol/l) erhoben werden. Die Auswertung des Gleichgewichtstests mittels Balance-X-Sensor wies auf ein reduziertes Gleichgewichtsvermögen der Patienten nach Elektrolytkorrektur hin. Hierbei konnte in keinem der ermittelten Parameter (Kraftvektorfläche, Muskelleistungsfrequenz, Stehleistung) ein signifikanter Unterschied gezeigt werden. Vorangegangene Studien zum verbesserten Gleichgewichtsvermögen nach medikamentöser Einstellung der Serumnatriumkonzentration konnten somit nicht bestätigt werden. Einzelne Stehübungen wurden zudem von dem gesunden Kontrollkollektiv mit einem signifikant besseren Gleichgewicht, bei zugleich niedrigerer Standardabweichung, ausgeführt. Die Erfassung der Lebensqualität erfolgte mit Hilfe des SF-36 Fragebogens. Die Patienten wiesen nach Elektrolytkorrektur insgesamt keine signifikant verbesserte Lebensqualität auf. Im Querschnittsvergleich mit einer gesunden Kontrollpopulation wies die Auswertung der Fragebögen auf eine insgesamt verminderte Lebensqualität, sowohl vor als auch nach Elektrolytkorrektur, hin. Die vorliegende Studie zeigt eine körperliche Beeinträchtigung, sowie eine tendenziell verschlechterte subjektive Lebensqualität, chronisch mild hyponatriämer Patienten. Eine signifikante Verbesserung der Werte konnte nach Anheben der Serumnatriumkonzentration nicht festgestellt werden. Die gewonnenen Ergebnisse sollten in Folgestudien mit einem größeren Patienten- und Probandenkollektiv, einem krankheitsspezifischen Fragebogen, sowie einem doppelblinden Studienaufbau überprüft werden. Auch die Möglichkeit der Durchführung einer multizentrischen Studie sollte geprüft werden. Der SF-36 Fragebogen und der Balance-X-Sensor können hierbei als kostengünstige Messinstrumente den subjektiven und objektiven Erfolg der Therapiemaßnahme dokumentieren. Ein konsequentes Anheben der Serumnatriumkonzentration bis in den Normbereich liefert zudem eine bessere Vergleichbarkeit mit internationalen Studien
The aim of the project was to grasp the clinical interference of the patients with mild and moderate chronic hypontremia in a longitudinale comparison before and after electrolyte correction to attain new therapy attempts in the treatment of the as asymptomatic classified illness. The study divided itself into a diagnostic part in which spontaneous urine and a blood test was analysed, as well as the clinical anamnesis were grasped, and an experimental part in which a cognitive and neuromuscular test occurred. The cognitive investigation grasped the reaction quickness and concentration ability of the patients. For this were available the validated test battery to the attention check (TAP 2. 0 for Windows) and the software package Viennese test system 32. 0. The neuromuscular test occurred with the help of the measuring platform balance X sensor. The action was standardised and reproduceable. In addition, the clinical signs of a symptomatic Hyponatremia were asked with the help of a questionnaire (headaches, confusion, mental slowing down, irritability, quarrel addiction, disorientation to time/place/person, tiredness, efficiency, dizziness, feeling of sickness, vomiting, walking insecurity, falls, cramps). The quality of life of the patients was asked with the help of the SF-36 questionnaire. After the tests the patients were depended to correct her sodium household with the help of an individual medication which was selected considering the topical directives of treatment. A reimage of the patients occurred after 14 days in the electrolyte-corrected state. A longitudinale comparison of the measuring results should give explanation about the magnitude of a change with regard to the efficiency and the feeling of the patients. To allow the cross section comparison with a healthy controlling group, we took the neuromuscular and cognitive tests also with healthy test persons in Normonatremia. For the cross section comparison of the quality of life measurement the internationally approved US-controlling population from 1998 was used. The study was split to the more clear representation in two separate parts. The present part deals with neuromuscular balance tests, as well as with the evaluation of the subjectively felt quality of life of the patients before and after electrolyte correction. Within the scope of this study data could be raised above the balance and the subjective quality of life of a total of 19 patients with chronic Hyponatremia (121-133 mmol/l). The evaluation of the balance test with balance X sensor showed a diminished balance property of the patients after electrolyte correction. A significant difference could be shown in none of the ascertained parametres (strength vector surface, muscle achievement frequency, standing achievement). Preceding studies to the improved balance property after medical setting of the serum sodium concentration could not be confirmed. Standing exercises were absolved by the healthy controlling group with a significantly better balance, with at the same time lower standard divergence. The patients showed after electrolyte correction no significantly improved quality of life. In the cross section comparison with a healthy controlling population the quality of life is lower before as well as after electrolyte correction. The present study shows a physical interference, as well as a by trend worse subjective quality of life of patients with chronically mild Hyponatremia. A significant improvement of the values could not be ascertained on raising the serum sodium concentration. The results should be checked in subsequent studies with a bigger patient and test person group, a questionnaire specific for illness, as well as a double-blind study construction. The possibility of the realisation of a multicenter study should be checked. The SF-36 questionnaire and the balance X sensor are reasonable measuring instruments to document the subjective and objective success of the therapy. Besides, raising of the serum sodium concentration till the norm area would deliver a better comparability with international studies

Abstract:

Travel writing is by definition an open and hybrid form that encompasses a variety of genres, styles, and modes of presentation. This study focuses on four little-known travel texts about Italy written between 1840 and 1880 by two English and two German women writers and shows how, by exploiting the openness of the form of travel writing, they broadened its scope beyond mere description to provide insight into national ideologies and identities while expanding the boundaries of the female sphere of influence. This study considers the following texts: Mary Shelley’s Rambles in Germany and Italy, in 1840, 1842, and 1843 (1844), Adele Schopenhauer’s Florenz: Ein Reiseführer mit Anekdoten und Erzählungen (1847/48) (2007), Frances Power Cobbe’s Italics: Brief Notes on Politics, People, and Places in Italy, in 1864 (1864), and Fanny Lewald’s Reisebriefe aus Deutschland, Italien und Frankreich 1877, 1878 (1880). In the first chapter, the four texts under consideration are presented against the backdrop of nineteenth-century sexual ideology of the ‘separate spheres’ and the conventions of women’s travel writing. A survey of the long tradition of English and German travellers to Italy and their writings is provided to establish the context in which the texts were produced. Also considered is the role they play in the narrative of Italian nation-building. In the second chapter, the discussion of Rambles in Germany and Italy examines how, by presenting herself as a mother and an educator, Shelley foregrounds the pedagogical purpose of the book, which aims at garnering the sympathy of her British audience for the oppressive political situation of the Italian people and their growing nationalism. The third chapter explores Schopenhauer’s attempt in Florenz to create her own gendered version of the guidebook for travellers in the style of Murray and Baedeker and to revive the memory of the democratic institutions of thirteenth-century Florence at a time when Italians were fighting for democratic reforms and independence. The fourth chapter shows how, in Italics, the representation of Italy in the wake of its partial unification in 1861 is closely intertwined with Cobbe’s own thinking on politics, religion, and women’s emancipation. The fifth chapter examines how, in Reisebriefe, the discussion of the social and political changes that had affected both Italy and Germany in the previous forty years allows Lewald to engage in a reflection on her own femininity and on the role of women in the newly formed German nation. Shelley, Schopenhauer, Cobbe and Lewald each used travel writing to explore their own identities as women and as writers. Pushing the form beyond exposition into the realm of social commentary, they used it to shape public opinion and to explore new roles for women in society.
