Abstract:
The paper presents the letters of Dr Milan Dimitrijević and his family, kept in the Archives of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, in the legacy of Patriarch German Anđelić (1822-1888). Milan Dimitrijević (1844-1901) was a teacher in the Grammar School in Sremski Karlovci and a reliable associate of Patriarch German. This correspondence reveals the biographies of Dimitrijević and his wife, and also offers a new insight into the political scene in Hungary of the 1880s and 1890s.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article deals with the effects of COVID-19 on the urban governance of Milan. The author argues that, despite the changeable situation still ongoing, looking at the measures assumed in 2020, the Municipality of Milan took middle-term strategies and radical decisions for the design and the use of the city from a perspective of sustainable prosperity together with the pandemic management. According to the "Milano 2020" Adaptation Strategy, several policies were adopted in order to decongest public areas through the enlargement of spaces and services. In particular, during that period, the administration planned new policies in order to empower urban flexibility, rhythms and times, diversified mobility, public and green spaces, infrastructures, cooperation, and inclusion. In conclusion, the author argues that the pandemic has redefined the urban prosperity of Milan in relation to the sustainable transition and the new social challenges determined by the global scenario.

Abstract:
We present a first attempt to analyse the effect of a large urban park (Parco Nord Milano—PNM) on the Urban Heat Island (UHI) of the city area of Milan. Specifically, analysis of the effect of three cyclonic and three anticyclonic circulation weather types (CWTs) on the frequency distribution of the daily thermal range (DTR) of five weather stations in Milan shows the stabilizing effect of the city on the DTR when compared with suburban and rural areas, generating a modal class of 4 °C in winter and 9 °C in summer. In parallel, a temperature transect of the urban park Parco Nord Milano was performed by bicycle during a day of anticyclonic summer weather in order to understand the effect of the park on the UHI. This investigation highlighted the homogenization effect on temperatures induced by the thermal turbulence triggered by intense sunshine.

Abstract:
Milan Sunko (Zidani Most, 5 December 1860 – Zagreb, 9 March 1891) was a heraldic artist, numismatist, and collector, who studied and started his carrer in Vienna working with the most renowned heraldists of the “classical” Austrian heraldic period. He moved to Zagreb where he made number of well received paintings and graphics and was supported by the intelectual elite of the fastly developing city. His brief spectacular carrier was abruptly ended by laryngeal tuberculosis, and he died in his 31st year. His works are preserved in several museums and galleries in Zagreb, and his heraldic lithographs and ex libris bookplates are remembered in specialized bibliography. However, the Croatian heraldic historiography has forgotten all about him and this paper attempts to remedy this. After the establishment of the Brotherhood of Croatian Dragon Society – one of its founders being Emilij Laszowski, notable Croatian heraldist; it took upon a project to preserve Sunko’s grave, exhuming his remains and providing a modest but dignified grave for him at the Zagreb cemetary in 1910. To achieve that, the Draconian Society raised funds in an international action, activating his foreign friends and fans, documenting the project in respectable heraldic periodicals.

Abstract:
328 Background: Liver transplant (LT) remains the best curative standard for HCC within Milan criteria (Milan). Nonsurgical locoregional treatments, including TACE and ablation, offer a bridge to surgical management and attempt to downstage or maintain patients (pts) within Milan pending liver transplant and donor organ availability. We investigated clinical factors that predict successful downstaging of HCC and liver transplant. Methods: In this single-institutional retrospective analysis, pts with early-intermediate stage HCC within Milan (control) vs beyond Milan were evaluated for clinical outcome. Clinical factors including treatment and response, demographics, TACE distribution (number of treatments, timing, and response), and status of liver transplantation (timing and if received) were correlated to overall survival (OS). OS was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: HCC pts (n = 343) considered for LT or downstage to LT were included in the study: 75% male, 13% African American, 55% Caucasian, and 14% Asian. 12% of pts had HBV, 53% had HCV, 2% had both HBV and HCV. 221 pts were diagnosed within Milan vs 122 beyond Milan, in which 36% (n = 44) were still within UCSF criteria (UCSF). 43% of those diagnosed within Milan ultimately received LT vs 16% of those diagnosed beyond Milan. 49% of pts (n = 60) initially beyond Milan were downstaged to within Milan, via TACE, wherein 27% received LT; this group accounted for 13% all LT. However, in the subset of pts beyond Milan but within UCSF, 68% were downstaged to within Milan, wherein 40% received LT. In pts initially within Milan, 21% (n = 47) progressed beyond Milan, but 40% of this subset was downstaged back to within Milan. Pts both within and beyond Milan had a median of 2 TACE procedures. Differences in the rates of LT relative to the number of TACE were significant (p = 0.022) for pts initially within Milan; for < / = 2 TACE, 54% had LT; for > 2 TACE, 26% had LT. Similar comparison was nonsignificant for pts initially beyond Milan (p = 0.95); rates of LT for < / = 2 TACE and > 2 TACE were 17% and 16% respectively. Median OS for non-LT recipients was 5 years vs not reached for LT recipients ( > 70% alive at 8 years, p < 0.001). Pts initially beyond Milan but within UCSF criteria had similar OS vs those initially within Milan (both 75% at 4 years), but OS was worse (50% at 4 years) for those beyond UCSF (p = 0.024). Conclusions: Liver transplantation significantly increased OS in early-intermediate stage HCC. Increased number of TACE procedures was associated with decreased likelihood of ultimate LT in pts initially diagnosed within Milan, particularly when they had > 2 TACE. Pts initially beyond Milan but within UCSF criteria had similar OS vs those initially within Milan; this former subset had a good chance of being downstaged to Milan and ultimately receive LT. Additional clinical factors that predict successful downstaging of HCC and LT are being investigated.

Rusciano, Vincenzo, and Andrea Gatto. "Effects of the COVID-19 Outbreak on the Use and Perceptions of Metropolitan Agricultural Parks—Evidence from Milan and Naples of Urban and Environmental Resilience." Sustainability 14, no. 12 (June 20, 2022): 7509. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/su14127509.

Abstract:
This article describes the multi-function of the metropolitan agricultural parks (MAPs) in Milan (Parco Agricolo Sud Milano) and Naples (Parco De Filippo) and their resilience within the last COVID-19 lockdown period. These parks play an important role in the urban regeneration and social inclusion processes in their relative metropolitan areas. Nevertheless, the restrictions imposed to limit COVID-19 contagions have imposed their closure or severely limited their activities, with evident consequences for the local population’s well-being. This study’s novelty is twofold: it is the first study examining the resilience and sustainability impact of MAPs during COVID-19; additionally, it is the first survey making use of Milan and Naples practices. The work uses primary and secondary data and mixed methods. Exploiting a document analysis and the elaboration of a semi-structured interview with the directors, the article lists the multiple functions of the parks and underlines their multidimensional governance vocations for fostering sustainable development—environmental, economic and social functions. The study also reveals that, during the lockdown, the parks’ activities were strongly reduced or restructured. Recreational and educational activities were lifted in Parco Agricolo Sud in Milan whilst local farms restructured their food supply and fostered their network and linkages with the urban distribution channels. MAP in Naples had to stop its activities and reorganize into a smart-working system. Lastly, our study found that economic and farm network activities were resumed with greater urgency in Milan, whereas in Naples the recovery of the social practices has taken on greater importance.

Prikazat će i analizirati njegovi radovi od kojih posebno treba izdvojiti sljedećih pet: 1) Riječdvije o Baščanskoj ploči (u povodu 890. godišnjice) (1967.; pretisak 1988.), 2) Baščanska ploča u našoj znanstvenoj literaturi (referat 1989., tekst 1997.), 3) Povijest hrvatskoga književnoga jezika (1993., 1995.2, 2009.3), 4) Filološki pogled na starohrvatske pravne spomenike (2000.) i 5) Kako pročitati Baščansku ploču (2011., prethodno objavljeno u Senjskom zborniku, sv. 37/2010).

Abstract:
Writing in 1882, Edmond Vander Straeten was the first to argue that the name ‘Juschino’ among the singers of Galeazzo Maria Sforza's household chapel referred to the composer Josquin des Prez. Assuming a birthdate in the early 1450s, Vander Straeten found it easy to understand why the young Josquin was at the bottom of the salary scale in 1475, the date of the documents. Soon afterwards, Eugenio Motta provided new evidence to support that identification and stretch Josquin's Milanese career to 1479. Since then the years in Milan have had a fixed and central place in all studies of Josquin's life.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Here, we reconstruct the history of the Botanic Garden of Brera of Milan from the Restoration of the Austrian Empire up to the early years of the Kingdom of Italy, when in 1863 the garden passed hands from the Liceo di Sant’Alessandro to the Istituto Tecnico Superiore of Milan. The reconstruction is based mostly on unpublished documentation preserved at the Archivio di Stato of Milan, the Biblioteca Braidense of Milan, the libraries of the Museo di Storia Naturale of Milan and the Archivio di Stato of Milan, the Archivio del Liceo Classico Statale Cesare Beccaria of Milan, the historical archives of the Politecnico of Milan, the Biblioteca di Biologia Vegetale, Dipartimento di Scienze della Vita e Biologia dei Sistemi, University of Turin, the Autografoteca Botanica of the Botanical Garden of the University of Modena, and the library of the Botanical Garden of the University of Padova. Overall, the period was one of slow decline for the Botanic Garden of Brera, against which successive directors – namely, Antonio Bodei, Francesco Enrico Acerbi, Giuseppe Balsamo Crivelli, Vincenzo Masserotti and Giustino Arpesani – combatted in vain. In particular, Balsamo Crivelli fought with great passion for many years to keep the level of the Botanic Garden of Brera at a satisfactory level, but he did not achieve the desired aim. However, he complied a partial list of the garden’s plants, of which an updated version is presented here.
