Full textThe subject of this thesis is the brief encounter between a 2000 year old city and a revolutionary movement personified by a young conqueror. There are 15 chapters and 4 annexes, the last of which gives a detailed description of Milan, district by district and street by street around 1800. Despite a number of enlightened reforms during the second half of the 18th century, Milan was not ready in 1796 for economic and social revolution. Napoleon Bonaparte made it the political capital of a state of more than 6 million inhabitants and it was to have a profound influence on public opinion, on administrative institutions and on town and country planning. But while the former land-owning aristocracy and the working classes managed to survive, the middle classes did not really grasp the opportunities offered by the new legislation. Napoleon's rule could have been accepted for a longer period had he not carried his anti-Catholic policy too far and had not his ambition led to conscription, increased taxes and the imposition of a continental blockade. After the interlude of the restoration, another capital was chosen for the new independent and united kingdom of Italy, and Milan had to wait for the full development of the industrial revolution before at last becoming the national economic centre we know today

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The thesis The signs of memory in Milan Kundera intends to think how the images grasped by the memory, when translated through the language, become signs filled with meanings in Kundera's process of creation. In order to that we delve into Henri Bergson's theory that the memory is an instance that establishes the relationship between the body and the spirit and finds in intuition the way to reach the inner side of the human being. Our hypothesis is that Milan Kundera uses his memories as a basis for creation and, having in language a means to unveil the world, he is not limited to a closed conceptual language, but instead he uses a language that explores the extension of the meaning of the words.

Full textThis study is about René Girard's and Milan Kundera's essays on the art of the novel. According to these two authors the novel is pre-eminently a source of knowledge. At the first, we attempted to grasp the way in which Kundera and Girard perceive the novel's gnoseological function, as being distinguished, opposed or supplementing to the knowledge within social sciences and philosophy. Secondly, we tried to clarify the prospects that such an idea offers to literary criticism. The dead ends of structuralism and the emergence of the cultural studies force criticism to redefine its own function as well as the function of literature itself. By studying the relations that Girard and Kundera maintain with the literary criticism of the second half of the 20th century, we tried to show that their work can contribute actively to the current debates

Full textThe thesis describes and analyzes the geography of mosques in Italy, a topic of great relevance and originality, in particular as regards the scope of geographical studies. This is a topic that has been investigated in other European countries, and beyond, while its urgency in Italy is becoming more stringent. Such an urgency is determined by the rapid immigration changes that have affected the Italian territory. The centrality of the Muslim component among foreigners living in Italy is now a reality, suffice to think to the affirmation of Islam as the second most popular religion in Italy, and it is expected to grow stronger during the next generations. On the grounds of these considerations, this thesis traces what the process of establishment of mosques in Italy was, by means of the study of case studies, and it analyzes the impact that such a presence has had upon the Italian territory, particularly in the urban context of the city of Milan. This work indeed shows the process of a visible manifestation that a religion, absent until a few decades ago in the Italian landscape, imprints upon the ground, from a privileged point of view, the places of worship, that is mosques. The heart of this work reflects the size of the "construction of space" highlighted by the construction of mosques. In fact, the heated debates that often accompany the proposal or the creation of mosques show that not everyone has equal "rights to the city" or to a "place" in space. And the construction of this right implies the sharing of a range of actors, discourses (the legal and mental representation of space) and for space leading to the legitimacy of this presence. Mosques are not only the symbol of the presence of Muslims in Europe. Through them one can read the position of Muslims in Italian society. The construction of mosques should represent the transition from an era of spontaneous settlement of a religious minority recently arrived at the time of institutionalization, with the attribution instead of a recognized and legitimate "place." Hence, the transition from the time of hospitality, in which the presence is temporary and revocable, and the welcome is "tolerated," to the "time of the right to the city" and recognition. This is the transition from the private to the public sphere of Islam. From the initial fate of the prayer rooms in the Italian cities, in this specific case in Milan, which are precarious and residual places (i.e. basements, garages, etc.). These represent the first phases of the settlement of Muslims in the urban space. A barely visible settlement and poorly organized, seen by the institutions and society in an almost benevolent and curious way, an exotic gaze towards diversity, with no major negative reactions. In this early period agreements were even actually reached for the new construction of purpose-built mosques. The mosque in Milan, however, was founded in an almost accidental manner, and rather little had been said about it until its inauguration. The Mosque of Rome is, instead, more the result of institutionalization, but mostly of international relations (i.e. the good relations between Italy and the Middle East, even more important during the 1973 oil crisis) than the presence of the local Muslim community. Conflicts are instead unleashed at the time of recognition and institutionalization, when a presence that was thought might be temporary or accidental becomes stable, organized, visible and centrally located. Furthermore, at the same time the Muslim minority is endowed with a negative connotation as a result of the tragic events relating to international terrorism and the ensuing conflicts

Cogné, Albane. "Patriciat et propriétés urbaines à Milan (XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles)." Grenoble 2, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007GRE29033.
Full textThis study aims at defining what the urban properties represent for the Milanese patrician elite in an urban, social and economic historical perspective. Are the construction of magnificent palaces only a sign of prestige and status ? Do these properties constitute an economic investment which provide an additional source of income ? Do they contribute, through renting practices for instance, to the creation and consolidation of a social network ? In order to answer such questions, a geographical information system based on the cadastral survey of Milan in 1784 was closely examined, as well as the documentation of family archives and the study of construction certificates, by looking at both statistical analysis and case studies. Light is thrown on the great diversity of the Milanese elite patrimony by a prosopographic study of the three-hundred patrician families. Their social background, their status, the degree to which they participated in the institutions of the city and their wealth, are criterias which help to understand how they conducted themselves in the urban landscape. The patrimonies are also studied in their temporal and spatial dimension (strategies of appropriation, methods of residential implantation). This research finally examines the symbolic and economic dimensions of properties, by considering them in their relationship to public space, to the patrician building activity, and to urban rent

Full textThe treatise entitled Noe, written by Ambrose of Milan, represents his thought and his activity in 378. Firstly, it summarises the studies and work he completed throughout the four liturgical cycles he had known since the beginning of his episcopacy in 374. While following the thread of the story of The Genesis, the Milanese exegete draws the portrait of The Just Man to the faithful eager to live their daily Christian commitment, in times of lent, and enrich their knowledge of the biblical text and spirituality. We have used the Latin text of the Italian edition SAEMO dating back to 1984, in order to translate it. We have added notes, showing the link with Ambrose's other works and his reading of Philon of Alexandria, as well as a commentary as an introduction. We are describing the method of the Milanese pastor's exegesis through their literary and rhetorical angles, so as to enter then the liturgical life which gives its meaning to the treatise, before evoking the aspects of Ambrose's theology

[Transformed Materials] is an exploration into today's design methodologies of architecture production. The emergence of architectural form is questioned in relation to the temporal state of design intent and the physical material construct. At a time when there is an increased awareness of the current state of technology, material innovation and methods of fabrication, there are new speculations of what materiality is and can be. This thesis will propose an architecture that emerges through an exploration of the material concept that directly informs and expresses the fundamental ideas of the project. Building methods have changed widely over time, and are co-responsible for creating a dialog between functional requirements, technological invention, and material implication that reflects the current cultural state. Today's architectural products have in a sense reverted back to thin surfaces. Current cultural issues such as socioeconomic, environmental impact, transportability, efficiency, lightness, storability, technology, and mass production, have over time created a state of "thinness ". This project tries to offset the current trend of building by accepting the norms of architectural products, and reinventing their role within a contemporary language that explores more deeply the material qualities and properties associates with it. This thesis will use steel as the primary building material. Steel is a material that has become standardized in how it is shaped and formed, thus its ability to produce an architecture has been reduced purely to a dogmatiC approach of engineered solutions or preconceived results. Steel, is artificial by nature; if we suspend our preconceptions of steel, could the material be designed such that its role is critical in defining space, structure and program in a tectonic system? The area of research and examination will be focused on the design of a Material Research Center (mRC). located in Milan, Italy.

Full textThis thesis analyses Milan's literary milieu in the first half of the 19th century. It focuses mainly on two problems. The first one is the underdevelopment of the publishing market. A complementary question is the unachieved status of the writer as an intellectual figure, along with the inadequacy of the publishing business. Although Milan may be considered the literary capital of the 19th century Italy, it is clear that writers could not make their living through their professional skills. A majority was thus forced to apply to the Government for economic patronage. The inquiry is based on a double methodological approach. On the one side, it is fouded on a large survey based on the available information about nearly 700 "writers". On the other, it consists in a serie of case-studies. It confirms that, in many cases, writers had to deal with the public authorities to gain favours, to receive subsidies and mostly to seek employment in bureaucracy and in the public schooling system
