Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the brief encounter between a 2000 year old city and a revolutionary movement personified by a young conqueror. There are 15 chapters and 4 annexes, the last of which gives a detailed description of Milan, district by district and street by street around 1800. Despite a number of enlightened reforms during the second half of the 18th century, Milan was not ready in 1796 for economic and social revolution. Napoleon Bonaparte made it the political capital of a state of more than 6 million inhabitants and it was to have a profound influence on public opinion, on administrative institutions and on town and country planning. But while the former land-owning aristocracy and the working classes managed to survive, the middle classes did not really grasp the opportunities offered by the new legislation. Napoleon's rule could have been accepted for a longer period had he not carried his anti-Catholic policy too far and had not his ambition led to conscription, increased taxes and the imposition of a continental blockade. After the interlude of the restoration, another capital was chosen for the new independent and united kingdom of Italy, and Milan had to wait for the full development of the industrial revolution before at last becoming the national economic centre we know today

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The thesis The signs of memory in Milan Kundera intends to think how the images grasped by the memory, when translated through the language, become signs filled with meanings in Kundera's process of creation. In order to that we delve into Henri Bergson's theory that the memory is an instance that establishes the relationship between the body and the spirit and finds in intuition the way to reach the inner side of the human being. Our hypothesis is that Milan Kundera uses his memories as a basis for creation and, having in language a means to unveil the world, he is not limited to a closed conceptual language, but instead he uses a language that explores the extension of the meaning of the words.

Abstract:
Urban manufacturing is a concept of new interest in the academic world. In the past ten years we observed a new interest in artisanal and manufacturing realities in different areas of the world. The observations started from the United States and spread across the world. With time, scholars detected a concentration of initiatives regarding both traditional craftsmanship and innovative manufacturing in the main cities of the world. Every city or country is now trying a different approach and lead a transformation that offers the chances to create employment and social equality in big metropolitan areas. The most outstanding case study regards New York, but more observations are now focusing on European cities. In this scenario, Milan is trying to earn a spot. The city holds knowledges and skills as well as many innovative initiatives within it. For this reason, the city hall is interested in the topic of urban manufacturing, trying to find the right model for Milan as artisanal and manufacturing city. Within this thesis, we will explore the different realities present in the city, starting from master craftsmen, who hold a long tradition and are the flag of Made in Italy. Alongside with them, other realities present traditional Made in Italy characteristics as well as innovative approaches to design, use of technology and commercialization of the product, in order to understand which are the next suitable actions for development.

Abstract:
The research concerns the Eritrean community resident in Milan where it originated around forty years ago. In this thesis I reflect on how people who migrated from Eritrea at different times, and young people who were born from Eritrean parents in Milan, perceive themselves as a community away from their native country; how they perceive the differences and similarities between each other and those considered to be outside this community; and how the memories of the past are perceived by people with different personal and social histories. Since this research relates to the formation of identities and perceptions of the self among a migrant community, issues are analysed with the awareness that movement, dislocation, and re-location have great impact on the perceptions of home and of the self in cultural, historical and social terms.

Jones, Tim. "'Slowness', 'Identity' and 'Ignorance' : Milan Kundera's French variations." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2012. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/50555/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores in detail three academically neglected novels by Milan Kundera: Slowness (1995), Identity (1998) and Ignorance (2002). Originally written in French, the author’s second language, after six novels, a short-story collection and a play originally written in Czech, these texts are often bracketed off from the rest of his writing and seen as something of an inferior addendum. This is despite clear thematic similarities that cross the linguistic divide and that I demonstrate here are of central significance to the author’s entire novelistic project. This exploration not only reveals that these three French novels place in the foreground themes that have rippled in and out of focus across Kundera’s earlier Czech work and so are of central importance to Kundera as a novelist. It also shows that the lateness of the variations on the themes of slowness, identity and ignorance within these three French novels does not hold everything in common with the lateness that Adorno locates in late Beethoven. It is true that like late Beethoven, Kundera’s late variations on these themes demonstrate the manoeuvres of an oeuvre sensing its death across the horizon. But through the specific nature of the late variations on slowness, identity and ignorance, the oeuvre works hard to pull its readers down into the textual spaces of these three late novels with a fresh urgency, rather than truculently push them away, so that Kundera’s audience might be adequately prepared to continue its own voyages once the oeuvre has played its final notes.

Belova, Maria. "Giovanni Raboni and the city : tableaux of Milan." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2017. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/103329/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis sets out to analyse the image of the city in the writings of Giovanni Raboni, in both his own poetry and his translations of Baudelaire. Raboni makes frequent references to Manzoni, not as the author of I promessi sposi, but of Storia della colonna infame, showing particular interest in the plague and the Lazzaretto. While Raboni’s writing looked to the future, it was firmly rooted in every aspect of post-war Milan, which he compared to the Milan of the preceding generation. The thesis investigates the theme of cityscape in three different ways, focusing on the cross-fertilisation seen in Raboni the critic, Raboni the poet and Raboni the translator of poetry. It explores Raboni’s poetry and the evolution of the cityscape, drawing on the interaction of translation and urban studies and approaching the poetry through the lens of Russian formalism. Chapter 1 provides the context for a detailed analysis establishing Raboni as a Milanese poet and highlighting the importance of the urban setting and architecture through the framework of critics including Benjamin, Certeau, and Augé. Chapter 2 looks at the motif of walking through Porta Venezia, Raboni’s favourite area of Milan, closely analysing the use of space and time in his poèmes en prose ‘Piccola passeggiata trionfale’ and ‘Nell’ora, ormai, della cenere’ and drawing on insights provided by two of his essays. Chapter 3, through a close reading of a selection of Raboni’s poems, investigates the urban space in domestic and public areas including such typical elements of cityscape as houses, streets, cinemas, and squares. Finally, Chapter 4 considers Raboni’s work as a translator of Baudelaire’s Les fleurs du mal and looks closely at the interaction between Raboni the poet and Raboni the translator. Thus, the thesis shifts from a focus on Raboni’s own city of Milan to Baudelaire’s city, Paris.

Abstract:
This study is about René Girard's and Milan Kundera's essays on the art of the novel. According to these two authors the novel is pre-eminently a source of knowledge. At the first, we attempted to grasp the way in which Kundera and Girard perceive the novel's gnoseological function, as being distinguished, opposed or supplementing to the knowledge within social sciences and philosophy. Secondly, we tried to clarify the prospects that such an idea offers to literary criticism. The dead ends of structuralism and the emergence of the cultural studies force criticism to redefine its own function as well as the function of literature itself. By studying the relations that Girard and Kundera maintain with the literary criticism of the second half of the 20th century, we tried to show that their work can contribute actively to the current debates

Pino, Marianna. Thesis, Paris Est, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PEST1036.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis describes and analyzes the geography of mosques in Italy, a topic of great relevance and originality, in particular as regards the scope of geographical studies. This is a topic that has been investigated in other European countries, and beyond, while its urgency in Italy is becoming more stringent. Such an urgency is determined by the rapid immigration changes that have affected the Italian territory. The centrality of the Muslim component among foreigners living in Italy is now a reality, suffice to think to the affirmation of Islam as the second most popular religion in Italy, and it is expected to grow stronger during the next generations. On the grounds of these considerations, this thesis traces what the process of establishment of mosques in Italy was, by means of the study of case studies, and it analyzes the impact that such a presence has had upon the Italian territory, particularly in the urban context of the city of Milan. This work indeed shows the process of a visible manifestation that a religion, absent until a few decades ago in the Italian landscape, imprints upon the ground, from a privileged point of view, the places of worship, that is mosques. The heart of this work reflects the size of the "construction of space" highlighted by the construction of mosques. In fact, the heated debates that often accompany the proposal or the creation of mosques show that not everyone has equal "rights to the city" or to a "place" in space. And the construction of this right implies the sharing of a range of actors, discourses (the legal and mental representation of space) and for space leading to the legitimacy of this presence. Mosques are not only the symbol of the presence of Muslims in Europe. Through them one can read the position of Muslims in Italian society. The construction of mosques should represent the transition from an era of spontaneous settlement of a religious minority recently arrived at the time of institutionalization, with the attribution instead of a recognized and legitimate "place." Hence, the transition from the time of hospitality, in which the presence is temporary and revocable, and the welcome is "tolerated," to the "time of the right to the city" and recognition. This is the transition from the private to the public sphere of Islam. From the initial fate of the prayer rooms in the Italian cities, in this specific case in Milan, which are precarious and residual places (i.e. basements, garages, etc.). These represent the first phases of the settlement of Muslims in the urban space. A barely visible settlement and poorly organized, seen by the institutions and society in an almost benevolent and curious way, an exotic gaze towards diversity, with no major negative reactions. In this early period agreements were even actually reached for the new construction of purpose-built mosques. The mosque in Milan, however, was founded in an almost accidental manner, and rather little had been said about it until its inauguration. The Mosque of Rome is, instead, more the result of institutionalization, but mostly of international relations (i.e. the good relations between Italy and the Middle East, even more important during the 1973 oil crisis) than the presence of the local Muslim community. Conflicts are instead unleashed at the time of recognition and institutionalization, when a presence that was thought might be temporary or accidental becomes stable, organized, visible and centrally located. Furthermore, at the same time the Muslim minority is endowed with a negative connotation as a result of the tragic events relating to international terrorism and the ensuing conflicts

Abstract:
The research studies the relationship between the immigrants and the housing in the context of the Municipality of Milan. It takes into account both of the economic aspects and the creation of a modern real estate market and the limits of the welfare system, in particular of the social housing. The research continues with the analysis of some main trends of contemporary post-modern society, such as the urbanization, the ageing and the impoverishment of parts of the population. The research focuses on Milan, in particular on the spatial effects of these aspects and it presents three case study of the history of Milan considered best practices of welfare.

Abstract:
This study aims at defining what the urban properties represent for the Milanese patrician elite in an urban, social and economic historical perspective. Are the construction of magnificent palaces only a sign of prestige and status ? Do these properties constitute an economic investment which provide an additional source of income ? Do they contribute, through renting practices for instance, to the creation and consolidation of a social network ? In order to answer such questions, a geographical information system based on the cadastral survey of Milan in 1784 was closely examined, as well as the documentation of family archives and the study of construction certificates, by looking at both statistical analysis and case studies. Light is thrown on the great diversity of the Milanese elite patrimony by a prosopographic study of the three-hundred patrician families. Their social background, their status, the degree to which they participated in the institutions of the city and their wealth, are criterias which help to understand how they conducted themselves in the urban landscape. The patrimonies are also studied in their temporal and spatial dimension (strategies of appropriation, methods of residential implantation). This research finally examines the symbolic and economic dimensions of properties, by considering them in their relationship to public space, to the patrician building activity, and to urban rent

Abstract:
The treatise entitled Noe, written by Ambrose of Milan, represents his thought and his activity in 378. Firstly, it summarises the studies and work he completed throughout the four liturgical cycles he had known since the beginning of his episcopacy in 374. While following the thread of the story of The Genesis, the Milanese exegete draws the portrait of The Just Man to the faithful eager to live their daily Christian commitment, in times of lent, and enrich their knowledge of the biblical text and spirituality. We have used the Latin text of the Italian edition SAEMO dating back to 1984, in order to translate it. We have added notes, showing the link with Ambrose's other works and his reading of Philon of Alexandria, as well as a commentary as an introduction. We are describing the method of the Milanese pastor's exegesis through their literary and rhetorical angles, so as to enter then the liturgical life which gives its meaning to the treatise, before evoking the aspects of Ambrose's theology

Abstract:
For several critics, Milan Kundera's novels illustrate the disenchantment of the world and the demystification of all myths. In this thesis, we accept this point of view while insisting on the persistence of sacred elements in the works of Kundera. We formulate the hypothesis of the "inoculation" of a sacred part (i.e. myths, scenes and figures of the Holy Bible, etc.) in the prose of the novel---"le caractere concret, quotidien, corporel de la vie", as Kundera wrote---in order to anchor this often unstable matter and alleviate the brevity of the character's life. Our analysis of three novels (The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Farewell Party and The Joke) reveals an oscillation between the sacred and the prose within the works of Milan Kundera. This movement is illustrated, in the text, by the motif of the baroque angel.

Abstract:
For Milan Kundera, the question of identity is one of the essential questions around which a novel is constructed. The novelist attempts to define the issue by exploring the existential themes that are tied to it. These themes are examined from different angles with the aid of what the author calls "motifs". Our study is centered on one of those motifs, that of the mirror, through which the author explores the "enigma of the ego". The typological analysis of this motif in Kundera's ten novels brings out in the characters two fundamental attitudes with regard to their identity. The first consists in clinging to it, which results in the character's disquiet, while the second consists in freeing oneself from it, which leads to a better understanding of reality as well as to a certain form of wisdom.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2002.

[Transformed Materials] is an exploration into today's design methodologies of architecture production. The emergence of architectural form is questioned in relation to the temporal state of design intent and the physical material construct. At a time when there is an increased awareness of the current state of technology, material innovation and methods of fabrication, there are new speculations of what materiality is and can be. This thesis will propose an architecture that emerges through an exploration of the material concept that directly informs and expresses the fundamental ideas of the project. Building methods have changed widely over time, and are co-responsible for creating a dialog between functional requirements, technological invention, and material implication that reflects the current cultural state. Today's architectural products have in a sense reverted back to thin surfaces. Current cultural issues such as socioeconomic, environmental impact, transportability, efficiency, lightness, storability, technology, and mass production, have over time created a state of "thinness ". This project tries to offset the current trend of building by accepting the norms of architectural products, and reinventing their role within a contemporary language that explores more deeply the material qualities and properties associates with it. This thesis will use steel as the primary building material. Steel is a material that has become standardized in how it is shaped and formed, thus its ability to produce an architecture has been reduced purely to a dogmatiC approach of engineered solutions or preconceived results. Steel, is artificial by nature; if we suspend our preconceptions of steel, could the material be designed such that its role is critical in defining space, structure and program in a tectonic system? The area of research and examination will be focused on the design of a Material Research Center (mRC). located in Milan, Italy.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses Milan's literary milieu in the first half of the 19th century. It focuses mainly on two problems. The first one is the underdevelopment of the publishing market. A complementary question is the unachieved status of the writer as an intellectual figure, along with the inadequacy of the publishing business. Although Milan may be considered the literary capital of the 19th century Italy, it is clear that writers could not make their living through their professional skills. A majority was thus forced to apply to the Government for economic patronage. The inquiry is based on a double methodological approach. On the one side, it is fouded on a large survey based on the available information about nearly 700 "writers". On the other, it consists in a serie of case-studies. It confirms that, in many cases, writers had to deal with the public authorities to gain favours, to receive subsidies and mostly to seek employment in bureaucracy and in the public schooling system

Abstract:
During the twentieth century, the former Czechoslovakia was at the forefront of Communist takeover and control. Soviet influence regulated all aspects of life in the country. As a result, many well-known political figures, writers, and artists were forced to flee the country in order to evade imprisonment or death. One of the more notable examples is the writer Milan Kundera, who fled to France in 1975. Once in France, the notion of exile became a prominent theme in his writing as he sought to expose the political situation of his country to the western world--one of the main reasons why he chose to publish his work in French rather than in Czech. This thesis analyzes the themes of language and memory in connection with exile in two of Kundera's novels, Le livre du rire et de l'oubli (1978) and L'Ignorance (2000). We contend that these concepts serve as anchors and tethers, stabilizing forces meant to help exiled characters recreate their identity outside of their homeland. By exploring notions of language and memory in these novels, Kundera demonstrates how the experience of exile affects the human condition during the latter half of the twentieth century.
