Full textThe subject of this thesis is the brief encounter between a 2000 year old city and a revolutionary movement personified by a young conqueror. There are 15 chapters and 4 annexes, the last of which gives a detailed description of Milan, district by district and street by street around 1800. Despite a number of enlightened reforms during the second half of the 18th century, Milan was not ready in 1796 for economic and social revolution. Napoleon Bonaparte made it the political capital of a state of more than 6 million inhabitants and it was to have a profound influence on public opinion, on administrative institutions and on town and country planning. But while the former land-owning aristocracy and the working classes managed to survive, the middle classes did not really grasp the opportunities offered by the new legislation. Napoleon's rule could have been accepted for a longer period had he not carried his anti-Catholic policy too far and had not his ambition led to conscription, increased taxes and the imposition of a continental blockade. After the interlude of the restoration, another capital was chosen for the new independent and united kingdom of Italy, and Milan had to wait for the full development of the industrial revolution before at last becoming the national economic centre we know today
