Abstract:
Migraine is one of the most common, disabling neurological disorders in women of reproductive age. It is a disabling condition that can lead to a compromised health-related quality of life. Often `migraineurs' are unable to carry out everyday tasks due to a reduction in functioning and productivity. This burden impacts not only at work, but also on social and family life. Migraine affects not only the physical but also mental and social health. Chapter 5 discusses the available evidence of a correlation between migraine and pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia complicates 3-5% of all pregnancies and remains a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity, and mortality. Although the primary mechanisms of both migraine and pre-eclampsia are not yet well understood, they do share some common pathogenetic aspects. However, studies investigating the clinical association between migraine and pre-eclampsia are sparse. The majority suggest a close association between headaches and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, and eclampsia. There also appears to be a significant increase in the incidence of severe pre-eclampsia in women suffering from migraine. Clinical manifestations of both migraine and pre-eclampsia appear to result from an interaction of the mind and body. A relation with stress has been identified. Further robust research is needed to elucidate the psychosomatic contributions to the pathogenesis of migraine and pre-eclampsia, and the clinical application of their relationship in improving materno-fetal health.

Abstract:
Headache disorders are the dominant cause of neurological disability in the world and the most common reason for neurological referral in any country studied. Yet for much of the first half the twentieth century, research was mired in peripheral mechanistic sideshows. Migraine, the most common disabling primary headache disorder, has been established as primarily a brain problem, with important advances in classification, treatment, and biological understanding. Cluster headache, perhaps the most severe pain experience of humans, has found its nidus in the diencephalon; treatments are evolving and biology being unravelled. Contributions to headache disorders resonate across humanity, so important work here has a global impact for good.

Abstract:
Exploring the roots of four keywords for our times: Europe, the citizen, the individual, and the people, Mariarosaria Gianninoto’s and James Underhill’s Migrating Meanings (2019) takes a broad view of conceptualization by taking on board various forms of English, (Scottish, American, and English), as well as other European languages (German, French, Spanish & Czech), and incorporating in-depth contemporary and historical accounts of Mandarin Chinese. The corpus-based research leads the authors to conclude that the English keywords are European concepts with roots in French and parallel traditions in German. But what happens to Chinese words when they come into contact with migrating meanings from Europe? How are existing concepts like the people transformed? This book goes beyond the cold analysis of concepts to scrutinize the keywords that move people and get them excited about individual rights and personal destinies. With economic, political and cultural globalisation, our world is inseparable from the fates of other nations and peoples. But how far can we trust English to provide us with a reliable lingua franca to speak about our world? If our keywords reflect our cultures and form parts of specific cultural and historical narratives, they may well trace the paths we take together into the future. This book helps us to understand how other languages are adapting to English words, and how their worldviews resist ‘anglo-concepts’ through their own traditions, stories and worldviews.

Abstract:
The definition of data in qualitative research is expanding. This book highlights the value of embodiment as a qualitative research tool and outlines what it means to do embodied research at various points of the research process. It shows how using this non-invasive approach with vulnerable research participants such as migrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking women can help service users or research participants to be involved in the co-production of services and in participatory research. Drawing on both feminist and post-colonial theory, the author uses her own research with migrant women in London, focusing specifically on collage making and digital storytelling, whilst also considering other potential tools for practicing embodied research such as yoga, personal diaries, dance, and mindfulness. Situating the concept of ‘embodiment’ on the map of research methodologies, the book combines theoretical groundwork with actual examples of application to think pragmatically about intersectionality through embodiment.
