Full textSleep disorders are one of the most common medical complaints today. There is a growing interest in sleep medicine, attitude of doctors and society is changing and knowledge about sleep and its disorders is increasing. One of the most tedious and understudied sleep problems is non-restorative sleep. Researchers are still debating about what determines persons rest sense after the sleep. A lot of attention recently is paid for sleep integrity and a role of sleep fragmentation for the rest sense. It is thought that sleep fragmentation with short arousals could have effect on the sleeps restorative function. The aim of our study was to analyze sleep structure and sleep quality through sleep cycles, phases and stages and to evaluate structure’s relationship with subjective sense of rest after the sleep without paying attention to the type of insomnia. We have analysed three types of arousals (behavioural, vegetative and microarousals) and their dynamics during the night, in different sleep cycles and stages. Subjective sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index. Work results showed that for the subjective sense of rest after the sleep it is more important the stability of sleep in the initial than in the last sleep cycles. Sleep stage and arousal type regardless of sleep cycle are significant factors for the arousal index values and that increase of all arousal indices in NREM 2 stage (especially increase of microarousal index) has strongest impact for... Full textAuthor: Jurgita Janonytė Title: Evaluation of sleep quality of patients with stroke Work supervisor: doc. dr.Vita Danilevičiūtė Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Institute of Rehabilitation, Sport’s medicine and Nursing One third of our life we spend sleeping. Furthermore, sleep is the condition, which is critically important for our physical, mental and emotional health. Today about half the people in the world are risking to confront or are confronting with sleep problems. Also, sleep disorders increase the affect of other illneses. 10 percent of adults and one in two of older aged people have sleep disorders or are ill with chronicle insomnia. It is important to have a suitable instrument to evaluate the quality of sleep in order to notice the changes in sleep quality and to correct them in time. The work purpose was to evaluate the sleep quality of patients with stroke in the area of Vilnius. To reach the purpose the main tasks were: 1. To find out the group’s of patients who had suffered a stroke time when they go to bed and wake up. Also, the time spent in bed and the sleeping time. 2. To find out the group’s of patients who had suffered a stroke soporific use and cheerfulness at daytime. 3. To calculate the Pitsburg‘s sleep quality index of group of patients who had suffered a stroke. 4. To evaluate how Pitsburg‘s sleep quality index depends on patients‘ age, illness manifesting time, education and living place. The object and methods of research: The research was... [to full text]

Full textThe onset of sleep under normal circumstances in young adult humans is normally through Non-REM sleep after 15 minutes of being awake. The abnormal entry into sleep through REM sleep can be diagnostic in patients with narcolepsy. One important investigation in diagnosing narcolepsy is the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), where onset of sleep and occurrence of REM – if any is measured 4 times per day. This test is traditionally scored by visual analysis of sleep onset and onset of REM sleep. There is tight relation between sleep and epilepsy. During sleep epileptiform activity is frequent and seizures make influence on the quality of sleep ant it’s phases. In some types of epilepsy (e.g. idiopathic focal) seizures occur during onset of sleep, in others (juvenile myoclonic) – short time after awaking. Detection of sleep onset is very important for the evaluation of the sleep quality of epilepsy patient’s and for accurate diagnosis of narcolepsy. EEG interpretation strongly depends on the skills of the EEG reader. Therefore automatic sleep onset detection could be useful diagnostic tool for EEG interpretation. We have found it of interest to investigate if an automatic analysis amplitude – integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) method could reliable identify sleep onset by comparing it with visual analysis in 25 narcolepsy patients, who were treated in Copenhagen University hospital and 23 children with epilepsy (idiopathic focal and juvenile myoclonic), who were treated in...
