Full text
Abstract:
WoodWinder is a machine whose job is to interpret the signal from a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) keyboard and make a recorder play accordingly. This was performed by simulating the two human traits needed in order to play the recorder: providing air flow for the mouthpiece and fingers to cover its holes. The air flow was provided by a custom made centrifugal fan and directed through a separation chamber which determined how much air was allowed to travel through the mouthpiece and how much was driven out through an exhaust. The purpose of the separation chamber was to simulate the amplitude of the played tone. The movement of the fingers was enabled by seven servo motors, mounted collaterally to the recorder. All movement was governed by two Arduino Microcontroller Units (MCU), a servo driver and a motor driver. The machine can play any note on demand without hardly any noticeable lag. The two lowest tones D and C were somewhat limited as they produced a distorted sound at high enough velocities. The largest error in accuracy for expected frequencies was around 6Hz.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A software system that automatically classifies MIDI files into hierarchically organized taxonomies of musical genres is presented. This extensible software includes an easy to use and flexible GUI. An extensive library of high-level musical features is compiled, including many original features. A novel hybrid classification system is used that makes use of hierarchical, flat and round robin classification. Both k-nearest neighbour and neural network-based classifiers are used, and feature selection and weighting are performed using genetic algorithms. A thorough review of previous research in automatic genre classification is presented, along with an overview of automatic feature selection and classification techniques. Also included is a discussion of the theoretical issues relating to musical genre, including but not limited to what mechanisms humans use to classify music by genre and how realistic genre taxonomies can be constructed.

Abstract:
The sociology of political elites in Midi-Pyrénées shows the permanence of notability tropisms in the definition of the southern eligibility. It also reveals that there are specific departmental networks which intervene in the selection and the training of its members. These members are mainly selected in the region. However, these facts of internal reproduction can not only be explained in a mechanistic way by referring whether to the paradigm of archaism or the paradigm of modernity. As time goes by, datas are changing. In fact, the combination of acquired or inherited resources simply bring predispositions, potentialities that need to be put up to date following circumstances. This quite particular work is not mechanic but it is more precisely a matter for a complex organization of constraints met in reality. Now, local political elites intervene in various fields. Potential constraints may turn into real resources and vice versa. The conditions of political job practice keep changing following the rhythm of change and social issues. The analysis of the functional aspect of the paradigm of actualization in three different areas shows very well that the position of "adventurer" of the local political leader is all the more claimed since the traditional legitimacy, characteristic of the local origin and the social wealth, is weak. The local ambition significantly increase and now one sells some "local". In the same way, this process of responsibilization which goes hand with their still growing ambition does not make easier their task. The ruling network gets more localized, more technical especially for the regional elites. The changes of political spaces both strengthen local leadership but also put the emphasis on territorial disparities in Midi-Pyrénées
