Abstract:
Full wave analysis of microstrip lines at microwave frequencies is performed by using method of moments in conjunction with closed-form spatial domain Green&rsquo
s functions. The Green&rsquo
s functions are in general Sommerfeld-type integrals which are computationally expensive. To improve the efficiency of the technique, Green&rsquo
s functions are approximated by their closed-forms. Microstrip lines are excited by arbitrarily located current sources and are terminated by complex loads at both ends. Current distributions over microstrip lines are represented by rooftop basis functions. At first step, the current distribution over a single microstrip line is calculated. Next, the calculation of the current distributions over coupled microstrip lines is performed. The technique is then, applied to directional couplers. Using the current distributions obtained by the analysis, the scattering parameters of the structures are evaluated by using Prony&rsquo
s method. The results are compared with the ones gathered by using simulation software tools, CNL/2&trade
and Agilent Advanced Design System&trade
(ADS).

Abstract:

Microstrip structures became very attractive with the development of cost-effective dielectric materials. Among several techniques suitable to the analysis of such structures, the discrete mode matching method (DMM) is a full-wave approach that allows a fast solution to Helmholz equation. Combined with a full-wave equivalent circuit, the DMM allows fast and accurate analysis of microstrips lines on multilayered substrates.

The knowledge of properties like dispersion and electromagnetic fields is essential in the implementation of such transmission lines. For this objective a MATLAB computer code was developed based on the discrete mode matching method (DMM) to perform this analysis.

The principal parameter for the analysis is the utilization of different dielectric profiles with the aim of a reduction in the dispersion in comparison with one-layer cylindrical microstrip line, showing a reduction of almost 50%. The analysis also includes current density distribution and electromagnetic fields representation. Finally, the data is compared with Ansoft HFSS to validate the results.

Full text
Abstract:
Series-fed printed slot antenna arrays excited by microstrip lines are low profile, easy to manufacture, low cost structures that found use in applications that doesn&rsquo
t require high power levels with having advantage of easy integration with microwave front-end circuitry. In this thesis, design and analysis of microstrip line fed slot antenna arrays are investigated. First an equivalent circuit model that ignores mutual coupling effects between slots is studied. A 6-element array is designed by using this equivalent circuit model. From the measurement and electromagnetic simulation results of this array, it is concluded that mutual coupling effects should be considered in order to achieve a successful design that meets the design specifications related to the main beam direction and sidelobe levels of the antenna. Next, an improved equivalent circuit model proposed for stripline fed slot antenna arrays is studied. It is observed that, the mutual coupling effects are incorporated into the equivalent model through the utilization of active impedance concept. Finally, the design equations proposed in the improved equivalent circuit model are derived for the microstrip line fed slot antenna array structure. To demonstrate the validity and the accuracy of the derived design equations, results obtained by the proposed analysis method are compared with simulation and measurement results. It is concluded that the proposed method successfully predicts the radiation pattern of the array by including the mutual coupling effects.

Abstract:
Currently two main tracks are considered for integration of photonic circuits. Silicon based integration may be more cost effective; however implementation of some functionalities like laser, is problematic. In contrast InP offers complete solution of photonic integration including laser diodes. Additionally, much higher speeds may be anticipated from InP based integration. As in the case of ordinary integrated circuits, attempts to increase degree (density) lead to undesired coupling-crosstalk between the components. Three types of cross coupling may be clearly distinguished: optical, RF(electric) and thermal. Each of them has its specifics, physical mechanisms and methods of analysis. Modeling RF crosstalk will be in the focus of this project. To drive active components, such as laser and photodiodes, conducting tracks are integrated with photonic components. In multichannel photonic IC chips these tracks become very dense leading to strong parasitic electrical couplings between them. This crosstalk becomes more problematic in high speed photonic IC chips where the frequency of the RF signals (modulation, detection) is in the range up to 10GHz and beyond. Thus modeling of the crosstalk between RF tracks (also between RF and DC) is of prime importance. This is the main task of the project. A further task is analysis of the crosstalk using developed models and considering designs allowing reduced cross coupling.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2009
This thesis presents the design, analysis and implementation of an eight-element phased array antenna for wideband X-band applications. The microstrip phased array antenna is designed using eight quasi-Yagi antennas in a linear configuration and is printed on RT/Duroid 6010LM substrate made by Rogers Corporation. The feeding network entails a uniform beamforming network as well as a non-uniform -25 dB Dolph-Tschebyscheff beamforming network, each with and without 45° delay lines, generating a squinted beam 14° from boresight. Antenna parameters such as gain, radiation patterns and impedance bandwidth (BW) are investigated in the single element as well as the array environment. Mutual coupling between the elements in the array is also predicted. The quasi-Yagi radiator employed as radiating element in the array measured an exceptional impedance bandwidth (BW) of 50% for a S11 < -10 dB from 6 GHz to 14 GHz, with 3 dB to 5 dB of absolute gain in the frequency range from 8 GHz to 11.5 GHz. The uniform broadside array measured an impedance BW of 20% over the frequency band and a gain between 9 dB to 11 dB, whereas the non-uniform broadside array measured a gain of 9 dB to 11 dB and an impedance BW of 14.5%. Radiation patterns are stable across the X-band. Beam scanning is illustrated in the E-plane for the uniform array as well as for the non-uniform array.

Abstract:
A model is presented which incorporates the advantages of a mixed mode simulation to characterize transmission line behavior in multiple coupled Transmission line systems. The model is intended for use by digital circuit designers who wish to be able to obtain accurate transmission line behavior for complex digital systems for which continuous time simulation tools such as SPICE would time prohibitive. The model uses a transverse electromagnetic wave approximation to obtain solutions to the basic transmission line equations. A modal analysis technique is used to solve for the attenuation and propagation constants for the transmission lines. Modal analysis done in the frequency domain after a Fast Fourier Transform of the time-domain input signals. Boundary conditions are obtained from the Thevinized transmission line input equivalent circuit and the transmission line output load impedance. The model uses a unique solution queue system that allows n-line coupled transmission lines to be solved without resorting to large order matrix methods or the need to diagonals larger matrices using linear transformations. This solution queue system is based on the method of solution superposition. As a result, the CPU time required for the model is primarily a function of the number of transitions and not the number of lines modeled. Incorporation of the model into event driven circuit simulators such as Network C is discussed. It will be shown that the solution queue methods used in this model make it ideally suited for incorporation into a event-driven simulation network. The model presented in this thesis can be scaled to incorporate direct electromagnetic coupling between first, second, or third lines adjacent to the line transitioning. It is shown that modeling strictly adjacent line coupling is adequate for typical digital technologies. It is shown that the model accurately reproduces the transmission line behavior of systems modeled by previous authors. Example transitions on a 8-line system are reviewed. Finally, future model improvements are discussed.

Abstract:
The demand for high-speed data services for portable device has become a driving force for development of advanced broadband access technologies. Despite recent advances in broadband wireless technologies, there remain a number of critical issues to be resolved. One of the major concerns is the implementation of compact antennas that can operate in a wide frequency band. Spiral antenna has been used extensively for broadband applications due to its planar structure, wide bandwidth characteristics and circular polarisation. However, the practical implementation of spiral antennas is challenged by its high input characteristic impedance, relatively low gain and the need for balanced feeding structures. Further development of wideband balanced feeding structures for spiral antennas with matching impedance capabilities remain a need. This thesis proposes three wideband feeding systems for spiral antennas which are compatible with wideband array antenna geometries. First, a novel tapered geometry is proposed for a symmetric coplanar waveguide (CPW) to coplanar strip line (CPS) wideband balun. This balun can achieve the unbalanced to balanced transformation while matching the high input impedance of the antenna to a reference impedance of 50 . The discontinuity between CPW and CPS is accommodated by using a radial stub and bond wires. The bandwidth of the balun is improved by appropriately tapering the CPW line instead of using a stepped impedance transformer. Next, the tapered design is applied to an asymmetric CPW to propose a novel asymmetric CPW to CPS wideband balun. The use of asymmetric CPW does away with the discontinuities between CPW and CPS without having to use a radial stub or bond wires. Finally, a tapered microstrip line to parallel striplines balun is proposed. The balun consists of two sections. One section is the parallel striplines which are connected to the antenna, with the impedance of balanced line equal to the antenna input impedance. The other section consists of a microstrip line where the width of the ground plane is gradually reduced to eventually resemble a parallel stripline. The taper accomplishes the mode and impedance transformation. This balun has significantly improved bandwidth characteristics. Characteristics of proposed feeding structures are measured in a back-to-back configuration and compared to simulated results. The simulated and measured results show the tapered microstrip to parallel striplines balun to have more than three octaves of bandwidth. The tapered microstrip line to parallel striplines balun is integrated with a single Archimedean spiral antenna and with an array of spiral antennas. The performance of the integrated structures is simulated with the aid of electromagnetic simulation software, and results are compared to measurements. The back-to-back microstrip to parallel strip balun has a return loss of better than 10 dB over a wide bandwidth from 1.75 to 15 GHz. The performance of the microstrip to parallel strip balun was validated with the spiral antennas. The results show the balun to be an effective mean of feeding network with a low profile and wide bandwidth (2.5 to 15 GHz) for balanced spiral antennas.

Abstract:
This work presents the equivalent circuit model, ringing and overshoot characteristics, as well as the ability of a new magneto-static responsive structure (MRS) to achieve the recon gurabil- ity of a variable e ective permittivity structure (VEPS). Through the use of a static magnetic eld and micro-sized conductive magnetic particles, the MRS can be used to connect separate transmis- sion lines (TL) that operate up to a radio frequency of 5 GHz. The simulated and measured results show the MRS functions well compared to other switching methods. The VEPS's ability to achieve e ective permittivity recon gurability is also demonstrated, showing that the VEPS functions as the well-known mushroom structure when the MRSs are in the on state and as a regular TL when the MRSs are in the o state. Finally, several brief studies of the MRS are performed, including the activation methods, MRS geometry, di erent types of magnetic particles, and smaller embedded MRSs within the VEPS.

This thesis is concerned with the design and implementation of compact hybrid couplers with similar bandwidth and performance to the conventional branch-line coupler. To achieve this, a class of structures, called artificial transmission line (ATL), was used. A new structure of this type, made of three transmission lines connected in cascade, is analyzed and used. Mathematical equations have been derived for the design of this type of structure that can be used to obtain ATLs with an identical scattering matrix, for a given frequency of operation, to that of a transmission line with a given characteristic impedance and electrical length. This technique was applied in the design of microstrip quadrature hybrid couplers for the 920 MHz GSM band and for the 2.45 GHz ISM band using a 1.6 mm-thick FR-4 substrate. These couplers have surface areas approximately 70% smaller than the area of the conventional branch-line coupler operating at 920 MHz and approximately 50% for the 2.45 GHz coupler. The couplers obtained were simulated, manufactured and tested, showing that their performances are comparable to the conventional coupler. The technique developed here is general enough to be applied to the design of other devices using transmission line sections.

Abstract:
Band-pass filters play a vital role in wireless communication systems. Transmitted and received signals have to be filtered at a certain centre frequency with a specific bandwidth. Band-pass filters are used as frequency selective component in many RF and Microwave applications. There are several applications of a band-pass filter, for instance, at the receiver end it is used to eliminate the image frequency and to bandlimit the received signal. In the transmitter, they are used to reject the spurious signals generated by the local oscillator (LO). This project deals with the analysis, design, simulation, fabrication and testing of parallel coupled band-pass filter. Advanced Design System (ADS) 2011.10 Software is used for mathematical calculations and simulations. The filter is designed at the centre frequency 2.4 GHz using FR-4 as a substrate.

In this study, we created a new structure as a couple circuits in the differential micro-strip line, which on differential line both sides or single side engraved with different periodic pattern to see whether this structure can effectively transmit surface plasmon polariton (SPPs). The trapping pair has entirely different and complementary for signal transmission, in herein, we simulated the frequency range from 200MHz to 10GHz by numerical analysis to discuss the structure effect for transmission bandwidth, color dispersion and attenuation constant. Finally, together with a conventional microstrip line simulation S parameters section, it can be learned from the simulation results, this special structure can transmit low frequency surface polaron, showing the ability to more effectively restrain the electromagnetic field, therefore can inhibit disturbance between micro-strip line, furthermore, can significantly reduce the differential signaling common mode effects because transmission line is too close so can more effectively in enhancing the Integration level of speed circuits and microwave circuit.

A new quasistatic and fullwave analysis of microstrip line structures with multidielectric layers is presented, using a hybrid approach that combined the finite-element method and the conformal-mapping technique. In this hybrid approach, the Wheeler's mapping function is firstly adopted to transform the half-infinite original domain into a finite image domain and to overcome both the problems of infinite field extension and the field singularity difficuty around the conductor edges. Then, the integral formula for the quasistatic analysis is derivved from the Laplace's equation in a way similar to that of weighted residual method in the finite-element analysis, while the variational formula for the fullwave analysis is derived from the Maxwell equation and then obtained from variational reaction theory. In the final part of this approach, numerical results for effective dielectric constants, characteristic impedances, charge distributions, current distributions and dispersion conditions for various multilayer microstrip lines structures are presented and discussed. Comparsions of the present results with the available quasistatic and fullwave ones are made, and good agreements are obtained.

The objective of this research is to apply a full-wave rigorous integralequation method for the analysis of superstrate-loaded cylindrical microstriptransmission lines. The approach started with Maxwell's equations, considering the effects of all appropriate boundary conditions, and then evaluated theGreen's function for the system of interest. The integral equation for the analysis expresses the unknown electric field in a convolution form of the microstrip current and the Green's function for the cylindrically layeredmicrostrip structure. Effects of boundary conditions on the behavior of the fields incorporated in their full generality in the Green's function. For numerical computation of the effective propagation constant and other quantities,we follow Galerkin's method of moments. The trigonometric functions incorporated appropriate edge conditions are used for current expansion and testing. In this thesis,we have completed some computation work. The effectivepropagation constants of the fundamental mode and the first higher-order modeand the characteristic impedance under the variation of the structure parameters will be presented. Results obtained from this work were compared to other researcher's work available in the literature, and good agreement was observed.

The purpose of this thesis is to study the dispersive characteristics of microstrip lines. Firstly, the microstrip structure and its relative quasi-static characteristics are discussed, and the existed dispersion models are also compared. Secondly, the frequency-dependent characteristics of microstrip lines are analyzed, including normalized phase constant, characteristic impedance, and losses etc. From the results of numerical analysis, it is noted that all the waveguiding parameters of microstrip lines are increased with the frequency. Finally, under the consideration of conductor and dielectric losses, the time-domain analysis of microstrip dispersion is executed. From the results of numerical analysis, it is noted that the dispersion effect will be more pronounced when the microstrip lines are designed with larger aspect ratio or substrate dielectric constant, and thicker strip conductor or substrate.

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the theory and application of periodically loaded microstrip coupled lines. By adding periodic loads on a parallel coupled line, Bloch wave modes can be generated. The characteristic impedances and propagation constants can be derived by applying even-odd analysis to the structure. We found that codirectional, contradirectional and trans-directional couplers, the three common types, can be realized. Compared to conventional microstrip parallel couplers, this new structure can provide higher coupling factors and reduce the length of the coupler. These three kinds of couplers are designed and fabricated to operate at 2.4 GHz with coupling factor 3-dB. The measured fractional bandwidths are 15%, 2.1% and 26.25%, respectively. The measured insertion losses are 4 dB、4.15 dB and 3.38 dB. A planar crossover is also realized by a 0-dB codirecitional coupler with measured bandwidth and insertion loss 24.2% and 1.32 dB, respectively. All these measured results are in good agreement with simulated results, proving our concept and theory.

One of the main requirements for a transmission structure to be suitable as a circuit element in microwave integrated circuits( MICs) is that the structure should be planar in configuration.A planar configuration implies that the characteristics of the element can be determined by the dimensions in a single plane. Microstrip line is the most popular transmission line structure that satisfies the requirement of being planar.Ease of fabrication by photolithographic techniques and a good range of impedances and couplings allow it to be used for a wide variety of circuit components. Also, simple transitions to coaxial circuits are feasible. For frequency up to 26 GHz,99.6% alumina substrate (dielectric constant=9.8)has been used by many designers. At higher frequency above 26 GHz,fabrication difficulty becomes significant due to the shorter effective wavelength, which results in the smaller size of the circuit. Since the effective wavelength(and hence the group velocity) is inverse proportional to the square root of the effective dielectric constant, which is closely related to the dielectric constant,a new substrate with lower dielectric constant will solve the problem.Futhermore, the group velocity will also increase when the dielectric constant is reduced. In this work, the cordierite sol-gel glass ceramic powder was used to construct the substrate(dielectric constant : 5-6@1KHz). Basic properties of microstrip lines on cordierite substrate were examined.A comparison to those in alumina substrate is also given. Experiments show that the cordierite substrates have good performance and are suitable for millimetre-wave microstrip designs.

The characteristics of single microstrip line or coupled microstrip lines on a cylindrical substrate are rigorously studied. For the single microstrip line study, theoretical and experimental investigations on a wide cylindrical microstrip line are conducted. The theoretical treatment using a full-wave analysis incorporating with the exact Green''s function in the spectral domain is applied. And moment-method calculation is used to obtain the frequency-dependent numerical results of the relative permittivity and characteristic impedance. From the comparison of the calculated results and the measured data, the contribution of the transverse current component to the characteristics of a cylindrical microstrip line is analyzed. A rigorous full-wave analysis of cylindrical microstrip open-end and gap discontinuities is also presented. The electric currents on the microstrip line are expanded in terms of entire- domain sinusoidal and piecewise sinusoidal basis functions. The entire-domain sinusoidal modes represent incident, reflected, and, for the gap, transmitted waves away from the discontinuity; the piecewise sinusoidal modes are used in the vicinity of the discontinuities. For the open-end case, results for the frequency-dependent reflection coefficient and the equivalent terminal conductance and capacitance at the discontinuity are presented. For the gap case, the frequency- dependent reflection and transmission coefficients and the gap capacitance and conductance are presented. The characteristics of cylindrical microstrip open-end and gap discontinuities for various curvatures are analyzed.

In this thesis, we developed a new kind of microstrip line on which the spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can propagate in the low frequency (such as microwave or terahertz regime). The metal strip is designed by introducing periodical subwavelength structure on the edge of conventional microstrip line. Numerical methods are used to analyze the dispersion relation, asymptotic frequency, attenuation coefficient and surface current distribution. Such periodically structured microstrip lines support spoof SPPs in the frequency range between 200MHz and 8GHz are verified. Compared with the quasi-TEM modes on conventional metal strip lines, the spoof SPPs can be highly localized on the surface of the structured microstrip lines, so the crosstalk between different structured microstrip lines is very weak. Therefore this new kind of periodically structured microstrip line will be of great use in the high density microwave circuits or high speed systems.

The electronic industry PCB circuit design of product . The conventional signal-end transmission working on low speed in design engineer knowledge. The differential transmission line used in circuit is very popular application. The Advantages of differential transmission line are of fast transmission speed , immunity against electromagnetic interference, But the drawback is necessary to support 2 symmetry characteristic transmission line need same impedance and equalize propagation delay, the differential signal will not distortion and function down. But electronic industry product and PCB size is very small of specification for cost down . A lots component will mounting on PCB. It will reduce differential transmission space and path to straight connect with component or chip input . How to meet and support 2 symmetry characteristic transmission line need same impedance and equalize propagation delay . In this thesis we will find out solution. The object of this thesis is to propose a method for compensate as un-desired phase delay cause by unequal-length differential transmission lines. The propagation delay of a bend of differential transmission lines can be improved by disposing structure to the unequal length differential transmission lines. In this thesis release method is added transmission line into bend of transmission line two side . It will coupling two line and cause inductor and capacitor effect of lump circuit structure to improved unequal length differential transmission propagation delay problem. We use CST simulation software to simulate 90° find propagation delay problem and try to find some technique of solution to solve problem. Than use TDR to extract lump element into AWR program from bend of differential transmission line fixture and added line into bend of differential transmission line fixture also AWR program simulation time delay of result . Finally we use oscilloscope to measurement all fixture and compare with simulation data. We are not consider UC-PBG and Meander line additional method because complex structure and high cost issue not good for electronic industry product usable.

This thesis presents a full-wave, spectral domain technique for the analysis of leakage problem of coupled microstrip transmission lines. The problem is formulated with an electric field integral equation (EFIE) method which is based on a field equivalence principle and the identification of equivalent current induced on the microstrip device surface. The EFIE expresses the electric field in terms of the device current integrated into an electric Green''s function;boundary condition are incorporated in their full generality in the Green''s function. For validation of this approach, the general coupled integral equations are specialized to the case of two identical axially-uniform microstrips. An entire-domain basis method of moments (MoM) is implemented for numerical solution in both lossless and leaky regimes. current distributions for the first three higher-order coupled modes will be presented. Results from this research will serve as valuable reference for the design of novel coupled microstrip devices and for future study in this area.

Abstract:
The main subject of this work is the modular design of multilayer printed arrays. The need for a multilayer feeding network is evident in large arrays with a large number of power dividers or phase shifters. Due to space considerations the spurious coupling between the network and the radiating elements, or between different parts of the network itself, can be significant enough to degrade performance. In addition, corporate feed network radiation can affect the sidelobe and cross-polarization characteristics of the array. The use of a multilayer feed network located in a different plane than the radiating elements can alleviate these problems. The transfer of power between two adjacent layers in a multilayer structure can be done using either a pin which makes an electrical contact, or via coupling apertures in the ground plane separating the layers. Beyond the advantages of fabrication, aperture coupling leads to inherently symmetric feed network layouts which further simplify the design. The Green's functions for multilayer dielectric substrates can be used to compute the characteristic impedance of any printed planar transmission line and the full-wave analysis of an entire multilayer network can be obtained. In the past, full-wave solutions were derived for different configurations involving the coupling from one layer to another by means of a rectangular slot. The number of possible configurations is quite limited, since in a typical planar multi layer structure there may be only two microstrip layers (the outermost layers), while the inner layers are typically stripline. This leaves two types of aperture coupling transitions: microstrip to stripline and stripline to stripline. Assuming that the coupling between separate apertures and the coupling between patches is negligible, having a model for each of these two transitions is enough to analyze and design the whole multilayer structure. The radiating elements can also be fed by aperture coupling, and a separate analysis has to be performed for each configuration. Furthermore, the radiating element layer can be placed in a plane perpendicular to the feeding network. The theory used in the modeling of different transitions will be presented first. The reciprocity technique first developed in (9) and further extended in (10) proves to be computationally efficient and gives good results for these cases. The models for individual transitions are validated by measurements and subsequently used in the design of a number of prototype multilayer planar arrays.

In the thesis, we present a method for the design and synthesis of double and triple coupled nonuniform microstrip lines. The method is originated from an electrical lengthmatched procedure for single nonuniform microstrip line. The system performances we considered are bandwidth and ripple peak of scattering parameter S11, so the Tchebtcheffresponse is adopted as the initial response for our design. Using the electrical lengthmatched procedure double or triple coupled nonuniform microstrip lines with smaller reflection can be synthesized. The reduction of ripple peak and the increase of bandwidthare impossible to obtain at the mean time and there must be a tradeoff between them.According to the system demands, the designer may adjust the parameters such as tolerable reflection coefficient and cutoff angular frequency for each mode so that desired performance can be achieved.

A full-wave spectral-domain integral equation method is employed to analyze the asymmetric gap discontinuities in both outside and inside microstrip lines affixed to the top of a cylindrical grounded substrate. The system integral equation expresses the electric field in terms of the microstrip current integrated into a dyadic Green's function; boundary conditions are incorporated in their full generality in the Green's function. The approach addressed in this work takes into account all the physical effects, including the radiation and surface waves excited in the vicinity of the gap discontinuity. For numerical solution, a Galerkin's method of moments using a combination of entire domain traveling-wave modes and piecewise sinusoidal (PWS) basis functions to represent the unknown strip current is implemented. The characteristics of the frequency- dependent S-parameters, power losses, and the pi-model equivalent circuits for several typical gap structures are investigated. The effects of the superstrate and radius curvature on the behavior of the asymmetric gap discontinuities in cylindrical microstrip lines are also studied.
