Loureiro-Koechlin, Cecilia. "Human and social aspects of software development for complex organisations : an online ethnography of software developers." Thesis, University of Hull, 2006. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5667.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of human and social issues that affect software development. It is situated within the field of Information Systems and focuses on the processes of software production used within complex organisational processes: particularly decision-making, collaboration and workflow. Human and social issues are problems and situations caused by the members of the target organisations, software developers, and the dynamics of their working and social interactions. The objective of this thesis is to identify these human and social issues and see how they affect software developers' work. The methodological approach adopted here, is designed from the interpretive point of view. This study takes the perspective of software developers as they possess practical knowledge of complex business settings and current software development practices. Online ethnography is the chosen method that allows this investigation access to virtual communities in which software developers work and exchange experiences. The design of this thesis is as follows: 1. Online data is collected which reflect software developers' beliefs about their work and their target organisations. 2. Data categories are created which show a picture of the current state of affairs in software development. 3. An interpretive theory building strategy is used to create a model of software development based on data categories. The final outcome of this thesis is developed as a complement to Orlikowski's (2000) structurational model of enactment of technologies-in-practice and takes the form of a descriptive, theory based model. This model contributes to the deeper understanding of software development issues. It presents human and social issues that affect the production of software within three different contexts: software development environment, software development practices and complex business organisations. The model generated in this thesis also suggests that software developers' perceptions of human and social issues in complex business organisations are influenced by the developers' background knowledge and experience.

Abstract:
Many software development organizations today are keen on improving their software development processes in order to develop software products faster, cheaper or better. For that reason, Software Process Improvement (SPI) has received significant attention from the research community over the last few decades. Process maturity models have become widely known for benchmarking software processes against predefined practices and for identifying processes to be improved or implemented, whereas process improvement approaches were developed for guiding the actual process improvement process. However, despite a wide number of provided guidelines on how to standardize the processes and how to run process improvement efforts, only a few SPI initiatives have succeeded. About 70% of the SPI initiatives fail and a significant number do not even get started. Many studies argue that the success of the SPI initiatives is dependent on the organizational, social and managerial aspects of process improvement. Those aspects however are not sufficiently covered by the existing SPI approaches and models. The little knowledge on organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI that is available is mostly scattered across the domain. Hence, there is lack of a holistic overview of the current SPI domain that provides sufficient coverage of organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI. This thesis has explored the organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI and placed them into the context of the SPI domain. Its main research result is Software Process Improvement Framework (SPIF). The framework provides an overview of the SPI domain and positions theories representing organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI in the context of existing SPI approaches, models, methods and practices. SPIF is based on the existing theoretical framework for SPI environment proposed by Sami Zahran. The SPIF framework has been additionally complimented with four additional outcomes of this study. Those are: 1) a list of organizational, social and managerial factors facilitating SPI effort, 2) a list of contextual factors impacting process change, 3) a process model for guiding software method adoption, and 4) a checklist representing the properties of successful and sustainable SPI projects. The research was based on a strong industrial cooperation. As many as thirty software development organizations were involved in this research. Methodologically, the research was conducted in line with the inductive reasoning, which guided the research into building the knowledge from empirical studies. However, at some stages of this research, literature studies were incorporated. The main research methods of this study are action research and case studies, whereas data collection methods are primarily structured interviews, participatory observations and surveys. The thesis concludes that implementing a recommended software development processes or practices using well defined SPI approaches is not enough. In order to implement successful and lasting process improvement, organizations also need to consider organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI. The SPIF framework and other results of this thesis may significantly benefit software development organizations that plan to conduct software process change, or have already done it. These organizations may use SPIF for getting an overview of the process improvement process and the theories, methods and tools that should support it. The other results of this thesis can be used for: 1) incorporating organizational, social and managerial aspects in process changes, 2) for adapting process improvements in various organizational contexts, 3) for guiding adoptions of new software development methods, and finally 4) for evaluating and improving process improvement efforts.

Saleh, Mehdi. "Built-in software quality in Agile development."

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Waterfall and Agile are the two most popular software development methodologies. Waterfall as the traditional one, is a progressive method. The progress flows in one direction, and upon the completion of previous process. Agile is another software development methodology with more iterative approach and possible change of requirements; with incremental delivery. Agile introduces freedom to requirement change and iterative delivery. However, such a liberty should not disrate software quality. Especially in automotive industry that deals with human safety and security. In such an iterative environment, there is a higher risk to compromise on quality checks before each delivery, due to short intense lead times. There will not be enough time for intensive quality assurance activities after each iteration. The solution to downsize the intensive quality check after each iteration, is to improve development quality during the development and building quality into development processes. This is what we refer as “Built-in quality”; the quality that is built during software artefacts development on a continuous basis. This study conducted at Volvo Cars during Agile transformation time and the main objective was to connect and emphasize the importance of built-in quality in agile software development. In this study we look at existing challenges that decrease quality of software artifacts during the development. Thus, by prevailing those challenges we can improve the software quality during iteration delivery. Such an improvement decreases the amount of intensive quality check after each iteration. Additionally, we look at guidelines and tools that used by different development teams to improve software artifacts’ quality. We also investigate how quality assurance engineer can support builtin quality during agile transformation.

Full text
Abstract:
Social media services are used by around 60% of the world's population and the use is growing. Studies have shown that social media have both positive and negative effects on users and as social media is used by such a large part of the population and is used within many aspects of society it can have a very high impact on society in general. That is why it is important to try to reduce the negative aspects of social media that individuals experience so that those negative aspects do not transfer from the service to society in general.  The aim of this study is to investigate both positive and negative aspects individuals experience when using Facebook and then take a deeper look at what is creating the negative experiences. The goal is to be able to find possible ways to change the aspects that create negative experiences to something less negative or positive instead.  To achieve the purpose and goal of this study a survey was sent out and follow up interviews were held with individuals to clarify what the positive and negative aspects were. In the interviews this study took a more detailed look at what is creating the negative experiences and how certain social media aspects might be changed to create less negative or more positive experiences.  The result concludes that the individuals that were interviewed indeed believe there are ways to change the aspects in social media that currently create negative experiences to something that creates more positive experiences. Some of those are using AI, giving users more control or transparency into the service they use and new ways to create trust between the users and the platform they are using. These results can be used by developers to create better platforms and services with less negative experiences for users.

Andjelkovic, Maja. "Mimetic processes in entrepreneurship ecosystems : the cases of mobile technology entrepreneurship networks in Nairobi, Kathmandu and London." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:935a8a55-f63f-458f-b462-17cad23c040e.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study of networks of entrepreneurs in the mobile technology industry in three ecosystems - Kathmandu, Nairobi and London - examines perceptions and attitudes of entrepreneurs related to their networking activities. The focus is on understanding the entrepreneurs' motivations for, and benefits and risks of networking, as well as the overall trends of development of the three ecosystems, which are very different from each other in terms of socioeconomic circumstances. The findings provide new insights into the link between the concept of a community of supportive peers and the acquisition of subjective resources, such as self-efficacy and legitimacy, while also supporting conclusions of earlier empirical and theoretical work linking networks with the acquisition of resources necessary for founding and building a new firm. A comparison of results across the three ecosystems uncovers a strong tendency towards institutional convergence of the three ecosystems based on a model inspired by the Silicon Valley experience. The mechanisms through which this is found to occur are mimesis and storytelling, motivated primarily by learning goals and the pursuit of legitimacy for entrepreneurial action in the mobile technology industry, as well as for the individual ventures. The overall finding emerging from the cases is that, despite significant differences, the three ecosystems are reliant on a shared pool of relevant information and knowledge, via the Internet and through personal and organizational connections. They resemble one another not only in terms of resources sought by entrepreneurs through their networks, but also in the ways entrepreneurs signal their purpose and value to their community, and in the way the describe their environment - through references to other entrepreneurship ecosystems. In the absence of an existing theoretical approach to analyzing convergence of diverse entrepreneurship ecosystems, the study proposes a framework based on DiMaggio and Powell's theory of institutional isomorphism, and integrating the works of Wiewel and Hunter, on legitimacy-building by association through networks, and Djelic, on the process of cross-national transfer, or export, of economic models. The type of isomorphism perceived is termed "aspirational," since it is found to occur in the context of pursuing a specific outcome previously achieved by the application of a particular institutional model. The difference between "aspirational isomorphism" and behaviours described by DiMaggio and Powell lies in the interpretation and adaptation of a model that can then be embedded in a nascent institutional environment (in this case, an entrepreneurial ecosystem). Rather than pure mimesis, aspirational isomorphism is a flexible and creative endeavor.

Abstract: This thesis aims to investigate the free software movement seen as a broad social movement, constituded not only by programmers and developers but also by a complex group of promoters and enthusiasts. This work gives special emphasis to topics involving culture, power, labor and ideology, stating that there is a fundamental political division between the "free" and "open" groups in the international free software movement scenario. It also tries to understand how this process re-signifies such categories in regard to the Brazilian context. The method of analysis is an ethnography report of the ninth edition of the Fórum Internacional de Software Livre, the world's biggest event in the area, and the one which brings together the militants of the Brazilian movement in a social drama. The thesis highlights elements found on the ethnography and puts together data gathered in more than six years of field work, as well as information collected in other events, mailing lists, interviews and meetings of the Brazilian social movement. The relations between the free software ideology and some of the issues that emerged in the end of the 20th century, such as Neoliberalism and the acts of resistance to it, are strongly analyzed. The aim is to observe how these relations articulate themselves with some of the characters and ideas imagined by the movement, such as "freedom", the "hacker" - and their culture -, the "nerd" and the "geek"

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to research the environment in which the IT-artifact exist, rather than the IT-artifact itself. Researching how founders of software startups manage their growth strategies, by researching essential internal and external factors and how they are represented in the founder’s growth strategy. This thesis is interested in the growth journey of startups, therefore we will study both software startups and software SMEs (small medium size enterprise). Research question: How does strategic management choices in the internal and external environment affect growth for software startups? Method: In this research we use a deductive approach, furthermore a qualitative research method was applied in order to gain a deeper understanding about the companies researched to answer our research question. We applied a comparative case study design as we wanted to analyze different cases/ companies and compared them both to each other using more or less identical methods. Semi-structured interviews were used as our preliminary data collection method as it allowed for flexibility. Conclusion: There is no perfect management strategy for software startups to achieve growth. The software industry is complex and rapidly changing, therefore the need to adapt and change the strategy to internal and external environment is essential to achieve growth. This research shows that the three most important factors affecting management strategies for growth in software startups are; (1) customers, (2) competitive advantage and (3) culture. Talented employees influence all the internal and external factors though the entire growth journey, both startups and SMEs. As the startup grows into being an SME, the internal organization factors become more important as well as scalability to achieve growth.

Abstract:
Agile project management emphasizes flexibility and adapting to change. Embracing change often means that specified requirements get changed, removed or replaced under the course of a software project. Another consequence of the nature of agile projects is that everything that does not directly contribute to the working software gets dropped from the product lifecycle. Traceability – the ability to trace requirements back to their origins and forward to design artifacts, code, and testcases – is one such thing that may be overlooked. At the same time, traceability may be crucial to making sure that the delivered product meets the product goals. This thesis investigates the concept of decision traceability – the ability to trace decisions that relate to the evolution of a software product, as well as the fulfillment of product goals. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the importance of decision traceability in relation to product goals and changing requirements in agile software projects. For this purpose, two research questions were developed. (1) What are the challenges of achieving decision traceability in agile projects? And (2) What are important aspects of achieving decision traceability in agile projects? An interpretive qualitative case study was conducted at an IT-consultancy firm. In the case study, two of the organization’s in-house projects were observed, and six informants were interviewed. In answer to the research questions, seven challenges and six important aspects of achieving decision traceability were identified. A conclusion that can be made from the findings is that other aspects than just well-defined processes– such as team engagement, value perception, and communication – may be essential to achieving decision traceability in agile software projects.

Abstract: The Information and Communication Technologies are constantly becoming more present in the everyday lives of a great part of the population, influencing many different aspects of social life. These Technologies are being constantly modified, receiving new usages and functionalities, becoming more and more flexible and interactive. As a result, the user and artifact relation and also the roles imputed to producers and consumers are changed as well. One of the most expressive examples of this phenomenon is the production of free/open source softwares: since mid 1980's, its collaborative culture of operational systems and application softwares development made possible the outspring of new models of distribution and new software technologies, in a certain way foretelling the collaborative production currently know from wiki platforms and web 2.0. The objective of this work is to analyze one aspect of this phenomenon throughout the case study of the BrOffice.org and the application of frameworks from the Social Studies of Science and Technology. In a strict sense, the BrOffice.org is a software package for office automation, derived from a international free/open source software initiative. However, this term is also used to identify a community of developers, users and activists, and a Non Governmental Organization associated to the software. In order to analyze these two dimensions of the object the work is divided in four chapters. The first chapter searches to familiarize the reader with the free/open source software subject. It shows a general contextualization of this movement trying to highlight some historical elements, its state of art and current importance. Chapter two is devoted to the Social Studies of Science and Technology (SSST), highlighting the emergence and establishment of this multidisciplinary field as well as its main theoretical and methodological approaches, like the Actor Network Theory. Above all, it tries to present the conceptual elements which guided the case study of BrOffice.org, described in the third chapter. The third chapter presents the methodological procedures used in the case study, a historical revision of the product and the collective and, finally, the application of the Actor Network Theory. It describes the object and the BrOffice's collective as components of a Techno-Economic Network, constituted from heterogeneous elements. On the one hand, it describes the process of constitution of the technical artifact from the simultaneous assemblage of technical and social elements, its importance for the definition of the relation among the many actors involved in the network by a translation of interests process. On the other hand, the case study tries to describe the dynamics of the network throughout the analysis of its convergence and irreversibility processes. In the end, the fourth chapter tries to summarize a few conclusions from the case study, pointing some of its specificities and indicating some possibilities of future studies

Abstract:
The software development business today is a land of constant change. The change requires the organizations who operate within this business to be flexible and quick to respond. This has led to multiple agile organization methods being developed, one of them is DevOps. A cornerstone in DevOps is self-selection - a method for assembling teams. This method gives hope of less administration, autonomy in teams and increased performance. In this essay we investigate the promises - the challenges and the possibilities - of self-selection. The case in this essay is IFS - a big software development company, implementing self-selection department by department also facing the challenges of combining traditional project values with the short iterations of an agile method. Our qualitative study investigates which the main challenges and possibilities are. We also investigate how these findings should be managed. How could the diversity, team size and autonomy be enhanced or diminished? We found that some parts of the case, and practice, were like our prior literature - but some were not. For example, the feeling of being in homogeneous teams were not always negative, and the majority of those taking part of the self-selection at IFS said they chose team by assignment - not social network as the prior literature said. Our conclusion reveals that there are several different factors to consider when having selfselection implemented in a traditional project environment. The main areas where we have found possible improvements are Team Choice, Team Diversity, Overlapping Assignments, Experienced Ownership, Management Influence and Performance.

Hutton, Luke. "Applying contextual integrity to the study of social network sites." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7795.

Abstract:
Social network sites (SNSs) have become very popular, with more than 1.39 billion people using Facebook alone. The ability to share large amounts of personal information with these services, such as location traces, photos, and messages, has raised a number of privacy concerns. The popularity of these services has enabled new research directions, allowing researchers to collect large amounts of data from SNSs to gain insight into how people share information, and to identify and resolve issues with such services. There are challenges to conducting such research responsibly, ensuring studies are ethical and protect the privacy of participants, while ensuring research outputs are sustainable and can be reproduced in the future. These challenges motivate the application of a theoretical framework that can be used to understand, identify, and mitigate the privacy impacts of emerging SNSs, and the conduct of ethical SNS studies. In this thesis, we apply Nissenbaum's model of contextual integrity to the study of SNSs. We develop an architecture for conducting privacy-preserving and reproducible SNS studies that upholds the contextual integrity of participants. We apply the architecture to the study of informed consent to show that contextual integrity can be leveraged to improve the acquisition of consent in such studies. We then use contextual integrity to diagnose potential privacy violations in an emerging form of SNS.

Abstract:
There is currently a clear boundary between web UX design and frontend development and thispaper explores the possibility of bridging said gap with the help of WYSIWYG (What You See IsWhat You Get) tools. In such a situation, WYSIWYG tools would generate markup code fromprototypes created by UX designers that could be directly handed over to frontend developers –saving time and decreasing misunderstandings between the two roles. However, despite thesetools dating back more than two decades, the tools are not actually commonly used for thispurpose. The aim of this paper is therefore to find out why, as well as explore what is necessaryfor these tools to bridge the web UX design-frontend gap. In order to do so, two studies wereconducted – first an evaluation study in which two WYSIWYG tools were methodically testedusing a software quality framework, whereas the second study consisted of two interviews withUX designers and web developers. It was ultimately discovered that the tools – apart fromconstraining its users within the tools’ own technical limitations – produced markup code thatwas neither human-readable, semantically correct nor easy to maintain. Thus, it was concludedthat a reformation was necessary for the web UX design and frontend development gap to bebridged with the help of these tools. The paper also theorises on the possibilities of using artificialintelligence to solve some of the tools’ most critical issues.

Abstract:
Collaboration between caregivers is a must to make it possible to deliver high-quality care to care recipients, but if the collaboration fails, the care recipients risk suffering. One way to promote collaboration is through social software, which, due to its communicative and relational properties, has shown positive results regarding the ability to promote collaboration within various organizations and professional areas. Previous research on social software in healthcare has focused on healthcare requirements and care recipients, and partly neglected the collaboration between caregivers in real work processes. Care-related professions also include several ethical and legal adjustments, which have led to complex services that will be used in environments full of disruptions. This study was conducted with a design study methods approach, in which design elements from aspects of collaboration in the form of trust, communication and awareness were implemented in a prototype to investigate how collaboration can be promoted in a healthcare context. The healthcare context in which the study was conducted was a facility for activities of daily living stationed in Sweden. The study resulted in seven design proposals for how social software in healthcare can be designed to promote collaboration.

Abstract:
Agile software development is a high-technology environment with several challenges. One of these is how to manage knowledge. Knowledge sharing is an important part of software development and is supported in agile practices, but mainly within teams, and not between teams. There is much research done about knowledge sharing within teams and a current trend is to research knowledge sharing in globally distributed teams. However, there’s little research about knowledge sharing between co-located teams, and what barriers and drivers exist. We conducted a case study within an IT-company with four co-located development teams to answer the research question: What are the drivers and barriers for knowledge sharing between co-located agile software development teams and how do they relate to different contexts.  Ten semi-structured interviews and one focus group was conducted and analyzed by using thematic analysis. This analysis constructed 6 themes, where 15 drivers and 21 barriers were identified. We contribute to the research field by presenting these barriers and drivers and show which barriers and drivers that exist in several contexts. We also relate our findings to other research. By our findings we also contribute to practitioners to understand when forming inter-team strategies for KS there is not only one way to success, but strategies need to be formed in several levels of organization.

Abstract:
Within Scrum framework the role of the product owner is critical for the success of a Scrum project. Today, there exist little empirical evidence of how the role of product owner is practiced and the challenges they are faced with. This research seeks through a multiple-case study approach to explore the role of product owners. The aim of the research was to investigate the existence of a gap between theory and practice in terms of the product owner role. Qualitative data collection consisted of eight semi-structured interviews with product owners and agile coaches which then was analyzed according to what theory of the role suggests. Results showed partly multiple factors confirming a gap, for example regarding vision, prioritizing and communication, and challenges that arise from the gap, for example concerning decision-making.

This study has   focused on system development approaches and system development   methodologies. The purpose of the study has been to present a view on the   current situation of different development approaches (agile, traditional,   iterative and hybrid) and methodologies by highlighting the situation from a   number of perspectives. Questions that are answered are: which system   development approaches and methodologies that can be said to be most   frequently used based on the respondents, if the mentioned approaches can be   given certain characteristics based on a selection of factors and the   respondents' attitude towards the approach they practice. The study has been   conducted as a survey where the answers have been obtained via social media.   The result shows that agile methodologies dominate and that they are often   included in various forms of hybrid and agile approaches. Furthermore, it has   not been possible to create an in-depth knowledge of the approaches based on   the selected factors. Finally, it is noted that project members who practice   an agile approach have a great confidence in the approach and have a strong   conviction that it contributes to increase the quality of the software.

Abstract:
Background: The companies of Industry 4.0 need to invest in digitalising their organizations as software is growing into a decisive manufacturing determinant. Especially in the SaaS business and the transformation to Industry 4.0, there are many small companies that are driving the transformation while competing for market share. In this context, the SaaS providers need to develop an understanding of the success of their solution. While the Information Systems Success Model by DeLone and McLean has found some application in the context of SaaS solutions, there is no specific model for the SaaS industry. Furthermore, there is the underlying need to understand which antecedents cause or influence the success of an information system. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop an Information Systems Success Model for Software-as-a-Service companies and to understand the antecedents and their relationships to the success of SaaS solutions from the SaaS provider’s point of view. Method: This study followed an abductive approach due to the possibility to simultaneously review existing theory and examine the empirical findings in the analysis. Furthermore, an exploratory study was conducted utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative data was gathered through a standardized online survey of the customers of a SaaS provider and then analysed using Structural Equation Modelling. The qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with SaaS providers, SaaS customers, and researchers of related fields and then analysed using a hermeneutic data analysis approach. The results of both methods were then triangulated to create the adapted model. Conclusion: Three antecedents of information systems success in the SaaS context were identified as part of this study. The antecedents are Management Support, User Involvement, and Trust. These antecedents can be used as levers by the SaaS provider to steer the success of their solution. Furthermore, the antecedents are integrated in a comprehensive Information Systems Success Model to measure and understand the success of SaaS solutions from the SaaS provider’s point of view.

Abstract:
Traditional methodologies of software development are burdened with number of problems, especially its complexity, bureaucracy and sticking on detailed processes defined in advance. This all often mean overtiming and overpricing the project as well as other negative effects. Agile methodologies of software development pursue solving such problems. They are built on principles of team-work, communication and developers' relations and sharing their knowledge. These values are one of the most important in agile development concept. This thesis's target is to identify and describe those principles of agile software development which impact development team functioning, working motivation of developers and focus on the project goals. Reader is first shortly familiarized with general theory of working motivation, team-working and leading to achieve the target. Then particular agile development principles are analyzed and the impact on developers' motivation, whole team functioning and focusing on the project goals is described. Another target of the thesis is to identify requirements on agile software developers, to explain what the need of them lies in and how the absence of these personal characteristics would impact whole team's productivity and the development progress. The last target of this thesis is to examine agile development as a whole. A SWOT analysis is used to achieve this. It states the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities (advantages) and risks of agile development. There is a list of 11 serious mistakes that can take place in the agile development process and heighten the risk of the project fail stated at the end of the thesis.

Abstract:
Software testing is becoming more prominent within the automotive industry due to more complex systems, and functions are implemented in the vehicles. The vehicles in the future will have the functionality to manage different levels of automation, which also means that vehicles driven by humans will have more supportive functionality to increase safety and avoid accidents. These functionalities result in a massive growth in the number of test scenarios to indicate that the vehicles are safe, and this makes it impossible to continue performing the tests in the same way as it has been done until today. The new conditions require that the test scenarios and Test Cases both be generated and executed automatically. In this thesis, an investigation and evaluation are performed to analyze the Automatic Test Case Generation methods available for inputs from Natural Language Requirements in an automotive industrial context at NEVS AB. This study aims to evaluate the NAT2TEST strategy by replacing the manual method and obtain a similar or better result. A comparative analysis is performed between the manual and automated approaches for various levels of requirements. The results show that utilizing this strategy in an industrial scenario can improve efficiency if the requirements to be tested are for well-documented lower-level requirements.

Abstract:
This thesis presents which factors contribute to efficiency in distributed teams working with software development, and how these factors affect the efficiency of the work process. Working effectively in software development projects is a challenge and the distributed factor, that project members are distributed across more than one office, brings additional complexity. Through the study, we want to help make this complexity more manageable. We have carried out a qualitative case study where we have studied a selected distributed project at a software development company. The empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed based on identified themes. We have mainly identified social factors, but also some technical factors that contribute to an efficient work process. The factors comprise communication, group identity, mood, culture and norms as well as leadership. They include, among other things, implementing well-adapted communication and documentation, holding frequent meetings, few groupings, common IT tools, promoting social communication, having transparent leadership and the team members having a high level of responsibility. In the conclusion we also describe how the listed factors help to achieve an efficient work processes.

Abstract:
Test driven development [TDD] is an iterative technique where unit   tests are written before production code. General idea is that quality,   especially code design, improves with usage of TDD. Previous studies have had   difficulties proving these benefits. Qualitative studies about TDD are rare   and a deeper understanding how developers’ view relates to usage of TDD has   been sought after. How experience affects usage and perception about TDD is   of particular interest, and the study’s basis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three experienced and   three inexperienced developers in a qualitative survey study. Obvious   differences could be determined by letting those groups represent the   experience range that exists. A deductive thematic analysis was performed with   the help of a theoretical framework. Results show that   workplace’s culture greatly affects how TDD is used. TDD is not commonly used   and low adherence to protocol is also made visible. Differences in basic view   about TDD is evident as well – creation of the code’s design is starting   point for experienced developers, inexperienced use TDD as a tool in creation   of unit tests and to control system correctness.

Abstract:
The after-sales pricing industry has, as many other industries, transformed with the digital era which have enabled automatization and scalable solutions. For companies pricing over 35 000 after sales items, scalable, digital solutions is needed. “The Company” International AB offers their SaaS solution Price, which integrates with the company’s ERP system and helps gain as much profits as possible by assisting with value-based pricing.  But lately, “The Company” has realized to be able to be market leading they need to ensure a better user experience (UX). This research’s aim was to understand how design affect customer value by understanding what UX factors are important to succeed in a B2B after-sales spare part market. The main research question were thereby: How do the UX design affect the customer value on an after sales digital service?. An important note to make is that this study will focus on the market, UX design trends and customers and their needs – not how the design should be done per se (e.g. “this button should be green, not blue”).  From the literature review, the sub-elements of UX were found to be Functionality, UI Design, Usability and Affect. Moreover, Organization is found to be a vital part to enable as good the UX as possible. The review suggested all sub-elements and their units could play a part of creating enhanced customer value.  The study is based upon qualitative interviews, followed up by a quantitative validation form studying the sub-elements and CSI. The interviews were held online with video calls and lasted for about 1–1,5 hr.  The findings verify earlier studies and implications, that all UX sub-elements do affect customer value significantly. The factor with least correlation to CSI is functionality which could be explained by being a hygiene factor, not motivator factor. Another finding, in contrary to B2C research, suggests that positive emotions is not wished for in B2B software’s as the users are “forced” to use the software as it is a part of their job, but this implication need to be further researched.  To be able to use UX as a market strategy “The Company” is advised to, within the product development team, not only prioritize new functionalities but also improving existing functionalities. It is also advised to share UX goals and vision throughout the different division working with Price. Some actions advice to take to enhance Price’s UX is making error messages actionable, enabling the user to save drafts in wizards and make it possible for the user to terminate any actions in the system.

Abstract:
Modern societies are affected by various threats and hazards, including natural disasters, cyber-attacks, extreme weather events and inter-state conflicts. Managing these challenging situations requires immediate actions, suspension of ordinary procedures, decision making under uncertainty and coordinated action. In other words, challenging situations put high demands on the command and control (C2) capability. To strengthen the capability of C2, it is vital to identify the prerequisites for effective coordination and direction within the domain of interest. This thesis explores C2 capability and effectiveness in three domains: interorganizational crisis management, military command and control, and cyber defence operations. The thesis aims to answer three research questions: (1) What constitutes C2 capability? (2) What constitutes C2 effectiveness? and (3) How can C2 effectiveness be assessed? The work was carried out as two case studies and one systematic literature review. The main contributions of the thesis are the identification of perspectives of C2 capability in challenging situations and an overview of approaches to C2 effectiveness assessment. Based on the results of the three studies, six recurring perspectives of capability in the domains studied were identified: interaction (collaboration), direction and coordination, relationships, situation awareness, resilience and preparedness. In the domains there are differences concerning which perspectives that are most emphasized in order obtain C2 capability. C2 effectiveness is defined as the extent to which a C2 system is successful in achieving its intended result. The thesis discusses the interconnectedness of performance and effectiveness measures, and concludes that there is not a united view on the difference between measures of effectiveness and measures of performance. Different approaches to effectiveness assessment were identified, where assessment may be conducted based on one specific issue, in relation to a defined goal for a C2 function or using a more exploratory approach.
