Abstract:
The utilization of Islamic social finance instruments is far behind what is expected. To realize its full potential, Islamic social finance instruments must be integrated. This study examined solutions and priority strategies for integrating sustainable Islamic social finance that could be implemented in the short and long term using the Benefit, Opportunity, Cost, and Risk (BOCR) framework, which includes six aspects: Governance, sustainable financing, institutional aspect, human resources, regulations, and supporting technology. This qualitative research employed the Analytic Network Process (ANP) method using the benefit, opportunity, cost, and risk analysis. The data were obtained mainly through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with respondents among academics, practitioners, associations, regulators, and community leaders. The respondents were selected for their expertise and experience in the selected topic. The data were processed using the Microsoft Excel and Super Decision software. There are several findings worth considering from the analysis. First, the highest priority in integrating Islamic social finance aspects are human resources (0.97), regulation (0.86), and technology (0.76). Second, based on the short- and long-term analysis, financial integration through sustainable financing (0.01 and 1.44, respectively) and improving human resource quality through certification and training (0.01 and 1.56, respectively) is a priority solution and strategy to integrate sustainable Islamic social finance. Meanwhile, according to expert judgments, integrating national data (0.24) and optimizing technology use (0.18) are priority solutions and strategies. The findings emphasize the critical role of improving human resource quality to utilize technology, with experts identifying a national data integration as the most critical solution. As a result, relevant stakeholders are concerned about technology management training for Islamic philanthropic managers, with the goal of maximizing the potential of technology’s growing role and adoption.

Abstract:
This research will develop a groundwater irrigation system performance index model with the aim of identifying the groundwater irrigation system performance index; this information can be used by stakeholders to determine management steps. The research location is in Gunungkidul Regency and includes surrounding areas — acknowledging that the karst aquifer has complex characteristics and non-karst aquifer, namely high heterogeneity as a result of the formation of a groundwater flow system through fractures which eventually becomes completely underground runoff. Screening for the variables was carried out using the smart-PLS (Partial Least Square) tool, which was then analyzed using the GRG (Generalized Reduced Gradient) method which is useful for solving non-linear equations. In this research, it examines the physical aspects, social aspects and management aspects as variables. The groundwater irrigation system performance index model examines 3 (three) variables, namely physical aspects, social aspects, and management aspects, then 11 (eleven) dimensions and 42 (forty two) indicators. The analysis using PLS SEM using smart PLS tools determined that the 3 (three) variables, 11 (eleven) dimensions and 30 (thirty) indicators are interrelated and effective. Whereas by using GRG (Generalized Reduced Gradient) analysis with the solver tool in Microsoft Excel, the most influential weights were obtained from the physical aspects, namely physical infrastructure (0.5782), geological conditions (0.2311), water quality (0.1286) and recharge area conditions (0.0475); the social aspects that obtained the most influential weight are socio-cultural (0.7471) and economy (0.2529); the management aspects that obtained the most influential weights are budgeting (0.2534), plant productivity (0.2270), WUA organizational conditions (0.2090), JIAT management organizational conditions (0.1987) and spatial planning directives (0.0674). In general, the weight of the influence of groundwater irrigation performance for these three aspects is 0.6686 physical aspects, 0.0856 social aspects and 0.2458 management aspects which are formulated into a performance index model for groundwater irrigation systems "Kautsar", namely IL = 0.6686 physical IL + 0.0856 social IL + 0.2458 IL management. For development, further research is needed on the performance index model of the groundwater irrigation system using Geography Information System (GIS) and a software application on android, iOS, or windows operation systems. A groundwater irrigation system performance index that consists of these three aspects is unique and has never been assembled in previous studies; it conveniently allow the user to determine survey results immediately.

Abstract:
The "Software as a Service" (SaaS) model of cloud computing popularized online multiuser collaborative software. Two famous examples of this class of software are Office 365 from Microsoft and Google Workspace. Cloud technology removes the need to install and update the software on end users' computers and provides the necessary underlying infrastructure for online collaboration. However, to provide a good end-user experience, cloud services require an infrastructure able to scale up to the task and allow low-latency interactions with a variety of users worldwide. This is a limiting factor for actors that do not possess such infrastructure. Unlike cloud computing which forgets the computational and interactional capabilities of end users' devices, the edge computing paradigm promises to exploit them as much as possible. To investigate the potential of edge computing over cloud computing, this paper presents a method for engineering interactive collaborative software supported by edge devices for the replacement of cloud computing resources. Our method is able to handle user interface aspects such as connection, execution, migration, and disconnection differently depending on the available technology. We exemplify our approach by developing a distributed Pictionary game deployed in two scenarios: a nonshared scenario where each participant interacts only with their own device and a shared scenario where participants also share a common device, including a TV. After a theoretical comparative study of edge vs. cloud computing, an experiment compares the two implementations to determine their effect on the end user's perceived experience and latency vs. real latency.

Abstract:
With with rapid change of climate, sustainable diets considering environmental, economic and social aspects of food system emerged as an important concept worldwide. In this study, the college students’ perceptions on sustainable diets were examined to diagnose their level of understanding and to be used for their future education. The basic data were collected from 115 college students taking an on-line class on food and diets in 2020 and 2021 located in Seoul. The word files of each report were analyzed by using Taguette program, an open-source software for qualitative research and Microsoft Excel. The results were as following. Firstly, the words occurred in the respondents’ mind by sustainable diets were health, environment, being eco-friendly, nutrition/nutrients in order. Abstract concepts occurred by sustainable diets were Health and nutrition, environment and being eco-friendly, and definite concepts related with food were vegetables, organic/no pesticide vegetables, local food, fruits, cooked rice for positive aspect and fast food/instant food, food waste for negative aspect. Secondly, the phrases describing the characteristics of sustainable vs non-sustainable diets were suggested as eco-friendly vs environmental contamination/destroy, health vs non-health, nutritionally balanced diet vs non-balanced diet/diet, eating proper amount vs overeating/eating at night, natural food vs processed food, vegetarian diet/vegetables vs meat diet/meat. Based on the results, the respondents seemed to perceive that sustainable diets are eco-friendly, healthy and nutritionally balanced diets by consuming proper amount of natural or vegetable food rather than process food. Thirdly, the definition of sustainable diets described as a sentence could be categorized into 9 groups by the key words of environment, health, and future. And the most frequent one was a diet that protects environment as well as human health. Above results showed that the respondents do not perceive social and economic aspects of sustainable diets other than envrionment and health when compared with the defition of FAO, the 3rd National Food Education Plan and concept of sustainability. Therefore, social and economic aspects of sustainable diet along with environment and health should be stressed and further education needs to be provided for college students to practice sustainable diets in their daily life.

Loureiro-Koechlin, Cecilia. "Human and social aspects of software development for complex organisations : an online ethnography of software developers." Thesis, University of Hull, 2006. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5667.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of human and social issues that affect software development. It is situated within the field of Information Systems and focuses on the processes of software production used within complex organisational processes: particularly decision-making, collaboration and workflow. Human and social issues are problems and situations caused by the members of the target organisations, software developers, and the dynamics of their working and social interactions. The objective of this thesis is to identify these human and social issues and see how they affect software developers' work. The methodological approach adopted here, is designed from the interpretive point of view. This study takes the perspective of software developers as they possess practical knowledge of complex business settings and current software development practices. Online ethnography is the chosen method that allows this investigation access to virtual communities in which software developers work and exchange experiences. The design of this thesis is as follows: 1. Online data is collected which reflect software developers' beliefs about their work and their target organisations. 2. Data categories are created which show a picture of the current state of affairs in software development. 3. An interpretive theory building strategy is used to create a model of software development based on data categories. The final outcome of this thesis is developed as a complement to Orlikowski's (2000) structurational model of enactment of technologies-in-practice and takes the form of a descriptive, theory based model. This model contributes to the deeper understanding of software development issues. It presents human and social issues that affect the production of software within three different contexts: software development environment, software development practices and complex business organisations. The model generated in this thesis also suggests that software developers' perceptions of human and social issues in complex business organisations are influenced by the developers' background knowledge and experience.

Full text
Abstract:
Many software development organizations today are keen on improving their software development processes in order to develop software products faster, cheaper or better. For that reason, Software Process Improvement (SPI) has received significant attention from the research community over the last few decades. Process maturity models have become widely known for benchmarking software processes against predefined practices and for identifying processes to be improved or implemented, whereas process improvement approaches were developed for guiding the actual process improvement process. However, despite a wide number of provided guidelines on how to standardize the processes and how to run process improvement efforts, only a few SPI initiatives have succeeded. About 70% of the SPI initiatives fail and a significant number do not even get started. Many studies argue that the success of the SPI initiatives is dependent on the organizational, social and managerial aspects of process improvement. Those aspects however are not sufficiently covered by the existing SPI approaches and models. The little knowledge on organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI that is available is mostly scattered across the domain. Hence, there is lack of a holistic overview of the current SPI domain that provides sufficient coverage of organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI. This thesis has explored the organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI and placed them into the context of the SPI domain. Its main research result is Software Process Improvement Framework (SPIF). The framework provides an overview of the SPI domain and positions theories representing organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI in the context of existing SPI approaches, models, methods and practices. SPIF is based on the existing theoretical framework for SPI environment proposed by Sami Zahran. The SPIF framework has been additionally complimented with four additional outcomes of this study. Those are: 1) a list of organizational, social and managerial factors facilitating SPI effort, 2) a list of contextual factors impacting process change, 3) a process model for guiding software method adoption, and 4) a checklist representing the properties of successful and sustainable SPI projects. The research was based on a strong industrial cooperation. As many as thirty software development organizations were involved in this research. Methodologically, the research was conducted in line with the inductive reasoning, which guided the research into building the knowledge from empirical studies. However, at some stages of this research, literature studies were incorporated. The main research methods of this study are action research and case studies, whereas data collection methods are primarily structured interviews, participatory observations and surveys. The thesis concludes that implementing a recommended software development processes or practices using well defined SPI approaches is not enough. In order to implement successful and lasting process improvement, organizations also need to consider organizational, social and managerial aspects of SPI. The SPIF framework and other results of this thesis may significantly benefit software development organizations that plan to conduct software process change, or have already done it. These organizations may use SPIF for getting an overview of the process improvement process and the theories, methods and tools that should support it. The other results of this thesis can be used for: 1) incorporating organizational, social and managerial aspects in process changes, 2) for adapting process improvements in various organizational contexts, 3) for guiding adoptions of new software development methods, and finally 4) for evaluating and improving process improvement efforts.

Saleh, Mehdi. "Built-in software quality in Agile development." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för informatik och media, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-413344.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Waterfall and Agile are the two most popular software development methodologies. Waterfall as the traditional one, is a progressive method. The progress flows in one direction, and upon the completion of previous process. Agile is another software development methodology with more iterative approach and possible change of requirements; with incremental delivery. Agile introduces freedom to requirement change and iterative delivery. However, such a liberty should not disrate software quality. Especially in automotive industry that deals with human safety and security. In such an iterative environment, there is a higher risk to compromise on quality checks before each delivery, due to short intense lead times. There will not be enough time for intensive quality assurance activities after each iteration. The solution to downsize the intensive quality check after each iteration, is to improve development quality during the development and building quality into development processes. This is what we refer as “Built-in quality”; the quality that is built during software artefacts development on a continuous basis. This study conducted at Volvo Cars during Agile transformation time and the main objective was to connect and emphasize the importance of built-in quality in agile software development. In this study we look at existing challenges that decrease quality of software artifacts during the development. Thus, by prevailing those challenges we can improve the software quality during iteration delivery. Such an improvement decreases the amount of intensive quality check after each iteration. Additionally, we look at guidelines and tools that used by different development teams to improve software artifacts’ quality. We also investigate how quality assurance engineer can support builtin quality during agile transformation.

Abstract:
Social media services are used by around 60% of the world's population and the use is growing. Studies have shown that social media have both positive and negative effects on users and as social media is used by such a large part of the population and is used within many aspects of society it can have a very high impact on society in general. That is why it is important to try to reduce the negative aspects of social media that individuals experience so that those negative aspects do not transfer from the service to society in general.  The aim of this study is to investigate both positive and negative aspects individuals experience when using Facebook and then take a deeper look at what is creating the negative experiences. The goal is to be able to find possible ways to change the aspects that create negative experiences to something less negative or positive instead.  To achieve the purpose and goal of this study a survey was sent out and follow up interviews were held with individuals to clarify what the positive and negative aspects were. In the interviews this study took a more detailed look at what is creating the negative experiences and how certain social media aspects might be changed to create less negative or more positive experiences.  The result concludes that the individuals that were interviewed indeed believe there are ways to change the aspects in social media that currently create negative experiences to something that creates more positive experiences. Some of those are using AI, giving users more control or transparency into the service they use and new ways to create trust between the users and the platform they are using. These results can be used by developers to create better platforms and services with less negative experiences for users.

Abstract:
This qualitative study of networks of entrepreneurs in the mobile technology industry in three ecosystems - Kathmandu, Nairobi and London - examines perceptions and attitudes of entrepreneurs related to their networking activities. The focus is on understanding the entrepreneurs' motivations for, and benefits and risks of networking, as well as the overall trends of development of the three ecosystems, which are very different from each other in terms of socioeconomic circumstances. The findings provide new insights into the link between the concept of a community of supportive peers and the acquisition of subjective resources, such as self-efficacy and legitimacy, while also supporting conclusions of earlier empirical and theoretical work linking networks with the acquisition of resources necessary for founding and building a new firm. A comparison of results across the three ecosystems uncovers a strong tendency towards institutional convergence of the three ecosystems based on a model inspired by the Silicon Valley experience. The mechanisms through which this is found to occur are mimesis and storytelling, motivated primarily by learning goals and the pursuit of legitimacy for entrepreneurial action in the mobile technology industry, as well as for the individual ventures. The overall finding emerging from the cases is that, despite significant differences, the three ecosystems are reliant on a shared pool of relevant information and knowledge, via the Internet and through personal and organizational connections. They resemble one another not only in terms of resources sought by entrepreneurs through their networks, but also in the ways entrepreneurs signal their purpose and value to their community, and in the way the describe their environment - through references to other entrepreneurship ecosystems. In the absence of an existing theoretical approach to analyzing convergence of diverse entrepreneurship ecosystems, the study proposes a framework based on DiMaggio and Powell's theory of institutional isomorphism, and integrating the works of Wiewel and Hunter, on legitimacy-building by association through networks, and Djelic, on the process of cross-national transfer, or export, of economic models. The type of isomorphism perceived is termed "aspirational," since it is found to occur in the context of pursuing a specific outcome previously achieved by the application of a particular institutional model. The difference between "aspirational isomorphism" and behaviours described by DiMaggio and Powell lies in the interpretation and adaptation of a model that can then be embedded in a nascent institutional environment (in this case, an entrepreneurial ecosystem). Rather than pure mimesis, aspirational isomorphism is a flexible and creative endeavor.

Abstract: This thesis aims to investigate the free software movement seen as a broad social movement, constituded not only by programmers and developers but also by a complex group of promoters and enthusiasts. This work gives special emphasis to topics involving culture, power, labor and ideology, stating that there is a fundamental political division between the "free" and "open" groups in the international free software movement scenario. It also tries to understand how this process re-signifies such categories in regard to the Brazilian context. The method of analysis is an ethnography report of the ninth edition of the Fórum Internacional de Software Livre, the world's biggest event in the area, and the one which brings together the militants of the Brazilian movement in a social drama. The thesis highlights elements found on the ethnography and puts together data gathered in more than six years of field work, as well as information collected in other events, mailing lists, interviews and meetings of the Brazilian social movement. The relations between the free software ideology and some of the issues that emerged in the end of the 20th century, such as Neoliberalism and the acts of resistance to it, are strongly analyzed. The aim is to observe how these relations articulate themselves with some of the characters and ideas imagined by the movement, such as "freedom", the "hacker" - and their culture -, the "nerd" and the "geek"

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to suggest additional aspects of social psychology that could help when making sense of autonomous agile teams. To make use of well-tested theories in social psychology and instead see how they replicated and differ in the autonomous agile team context would avoid reinventing the wheel. This was done, as an initial step, through looking at some very common agile practices and relate them to existing findings in social-psychological research. The two theories found that I argue could be more applied to the software engineering context are social identity theory and group socialization theory. The results show that literature provides social-psychological reasons for the popularity of some agile practices, but that scientific studies are needed to gather empirical evidence on these under-researched topics. Understanding deeper psychological theories could provide a better understanding of the psychological processes when building autonomous agile team, which could then lead to better predictability and intervention in relation to human factors.

Abstract:
AbstractHomelessness in later life is closely related to social exclusion and can cause further disadvantages in later life. This chapter explores the relationship between studies on older adult homelessness and the domains of social exclusion. A structure review process, in the form of a summative content analysis and a social network analysis, of all geriatrics and gerontology journals published in English was conducted. This review led to the identification of 59 articles on homelessness in older age as the research sample for this chapter. The patterns that emerged from summative content analysis and the social network analysis are visualised using GEPHI software. Our findings reveal the multidimensional aspects of old-age exclusion in the homelessness literature, and how homelessness can be a significant determinant of interrelated sets of disadvantages. Exclusion from services, amenities, and mobility and community and neighbourhood, and material and financial resources are the domains represented most in homelessness studies in the ageing literature. However, civic participation and socio-cultural aspects of social exclusion were partly ignored within this body of work.
