Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the main aims of Component adaptation [Szy97] is to help application developers reuse components so that they can plug-in third party components into their application. This research concentrates on this type of adaptation but in the context of Web Services. Web Services are becoming increasingly popular. Web Services often fit the requirements of being a component, and can be reused in a very similar manner. Hence there is a requirement for adaptation of Web Services just as there is the need for adaptation of software components. There are now quite a few adaptation techniques, but few of them have identified adaptation techniques for Web Services. This approach to adaptation allows for the modification of data and behaviour of existing Web Services. The approach to adaptation uses eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) transformation applied to the message passed between Web Services. These messages are commonly in XML format, hence XSL can be used to modify them. The application of the transformation is guided by a specification written in XML. The adaptation is executed by a generic runtime system that uses these specifications which are referred to as Guiding Specifications. This has been demonstrated by way of a motivating real world example implemented on the .Net platform. It is shown how an adapter can be specified using a simplistic Guiding Specification and related XSLT documents. This allows the implementation to work more efficiently than hand coding each adapter. It is the underlying generic runtime support that provides much of this benefit. Component based software engineering (CBSE) constructs applications by assembling components together, CBSE has been of great help to application developers due to the very fact that tailor made components can be purchased from third party vendors and can be plugged-in to a system to form a working application. But in practice 'as-is' reuse is very unlikely to occur, and most components need to be changed in some way to match the requirements of the application architecture and other components. The process of changing thecomponent for use in a particular application is often referred to as Component Adaptation.

Abstract:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly gaining ground in our daily life. There is a trend that the number of devices and data increases rapidly in the future. Meanwhile, IoT platforms are emerging to enable people conveniently deal with the IoT and these huge amount of data and devices. Therefore, the goal in this paper is to perform a quantitative evaluation on Microsoft Azure, one of the IoT platform, about its advantages and disadvantages under press to determine if Azure IoT is fit for future IoT. In order to reach this goal, Azure IoT Hub is used as a bridge to connect and manage lots of IoT devices which send and receive huge amount of data. .NET is used to simulate devices and connect them to the IoT Hub. The two-way communication from sensor to cloud and from cloud to actuator is implemented through MQTT protocol. This paper makes measurements on three metrics including response time from sensor sending messages to actuator receiving messages, scalability and cost and analyzes them in detail. Besides, the analysis is also made in a specific scenario which has high demand on sensor update to see how Azure IoT performs. Finally, conclusion is made on Microsoft Azure IoT's advantages and disadvantages under stress.

Abstract:
Customer Relationship Management has been an integral part of the enterprise since two decades. Today, enterprises that focus on customer satisfaction need to manage their relationships with their customers effectively. This demand has allowed software vendors to create CRM solutions. The technology and broadband advancement allowed the CRM vendors to enhance their product portfolio by developing web-based CRM systems, in addition to their CRM on-premise solutions. These vendors adopted the business model in which CRM on-demand systems are provided via monthly-subscription fees, decreasing the total cost of ownership massively for enterprises in need of these systems. This business model is especially attractive for Small-To-Medium Enterprises who are searching for cost-efficient CRM systems. Currently, CRM on-demand market is quite saturated with more than 40 vendors providing similar solutions. Furthermore, CRM on-demand is delivered via Software-as-a-service method, which is a relatively new technology with unique benefits along with drawbacks. Thus, it’s of vital importance for managers in SMEs to make the right decision while evaluating the CRM on-demand option and systems. This research is meant to address this issue by building a proposed framework for CRM on-demand system evaluation. The inductive research uses qualitative and quantitative approaches for data collection and analysis. The evaluation criteria for CRM on-demand systems at a functional and general level were proposed. The general criteria were refined via collecting data from CRM on-demand experts and users in SMEs by structured questionnaires. Combining these criteria created the proposed framework which was applied to evaluate two major CRM on-demand systems in the market. The results indicate that CRM on-demand systems cover the basic functionalities of CRM including sales, marketing and service modules and offer enhanced functionality such as mobile CRM, social CRM and customizations. The research also revealed drawbacks of CRM on-demand systems such as disintegration with legacy applications, limited language support, limited country availability and technology maturity which needs to be addressed in the future. This research provides valuable insight for managers in SMEs when selecting CRM on-demand systems for their companies. Furthermore, the academicians interested in CRM and cloud computing could improve this initial proposed framework and adapt it further to different cases.

Coppejans, Hugo Herman Godelieve. "RGB-D SLAM : an implementation framework based on the joint evaluation of spatial velocities." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/64524.

Abstract:
In pursuit of creating a fully automated navigation system that is capable of operating in dynamic environments, a large amount of research is being devoted to systems that use visual odometry assisted methods to estimate the position of a platform with regards to the environment surrounding it. This includes systems that do and do not know the environment a priori, as both rely on the same methods for localisation. For the combined problem of localisation and mapping, Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) is the de facto choice, and in recent years with the advent of color and depth (RGB-D) sensors, RGB-D SLAM has become a hot topic for research. Most research being performed is on improving the overall system accuracy or more specifically the performance with regards to the overall trajectory error. While this approach quantifies the performance of the system as a whole, the individual frame-to-frame performance is often not mentioned or explored properly. While this will directly tie in to the overall performance, the level of scene cohesion experienced between two successive observations can vary greatly over a single dataset of observations. The focus of this dissertation will be the relevant levels of translational and rotational velocities experienced by the sensor between two successive observations and the effect on the final accuracy of the SLAM implementation. The frame rate will specifically be used to alter and evaluate the different spatial velocities experienced over multiple datasets of RGB-D data. Two systems were developed to illustrate and evaluate the potential of various approaches to RGB-D SLAM. The first system is a real-world implementation where SLAM is used to localise and map the environment surrounding a quadcopter platform. A Microsoft Kinect is directly mounted to the quadcopter and is used to provide a RGB-D datastream to a remote processing terminal. This terminal runs a SLAM implementation that can alternate between different visual odometry methods. The remote terminal acts as the position controller for the quadcopter, replacing the need for a direct human operator. A semi-automated system is implemented, that allows a human operator to designate waypoints within the environment that the quadcopter moves to. The second system uses a series of publicly available RGB-D datasets with their accompanying ground-truth readings to simulate a real RGB-D datasteam. This is used to evaluate the performance of the various RGB-D SLAM approaches to visual odometry. For each of the datasets, the accompanying translational and angular velocity on a frame-to-frame basis can be calculated. This can, in turn, be used to evaluate the frame-to-frame accuracy of the SLAM implementation, where the spatial velocity can be manually altered by occluding frames within the sequence. Thus, an accurate relationship can be calculated between the frame rate, the spatial velocity and the performance of the SLAM implementation. Three image processing techniques were used to implement the visual odometry for RGB-D SLAM. SIFT, SURF and ORB were compared across eight of the TUM database datasets. SIFT had the best performance, with a 30% increase over SURF and doubling the performance of ORB. By implementing SIFT using CUDA, the feature detection and description process only takes 18ms, negating the disadvantage that SIFT has compared to SURF and ORB. The RGB-D SLAM implementation was compared to four prominent research papers, and showed comparable results. The effect of rotation and translation was evaluated, based on the effect of each rotation and translation axis. It was found that the z-axis (scale) and the roll-axis (scene orientation) have a lower effect on the average RPE error in a frame-to-frame basis. It was found that rotation has a much greater impact on the performance, when evaluating rotation and translation separately. On average, a rotation of 1deg resulted in a 4mm translation error and a 20% rotation error , where a translation of 10mm resulted in a rotation error of 0.2deg and a translation error of 45%. The combined effect of rotation and translation had a multiplicative effect on the error metric. The quadcopter platform designed to work with the SLAM implementation did not function ideally, but it was sufficient for the purpose. The quadcopter is able to self stabilise within the environment, given a spacious area. For smaller, enclosed areas the backdraft generated by the quadcopter motors lead to some instability in the system. A frame-to-frame error of 40.34mm and 1.93deg was estimated for the quadcopter system.

Abstract:
CRM Treasury Systems AB is one of the Nordic Countries’ leading companies within treasury management. Their main product CRM Finance is a software program for financial administrators with roots back to the early 90s. Computer usage and software has changed considerably since then and the company is currently considering choosing a new technology to base future products upon. In this thesis Oracle ADF, Microsoft Lightswitch beta 1 and Silverlight with WCF RIA Services, are compared in order to select a suitable technology to base future applications on. The frameworks are used to implement a simple application with a small number of screens displaying database data in order to get to know the frameworks and capture the time required to get started. After the basic applications have been implemented in all the three frameworks and evaluated it is decided to continue by implementing a number of more advanced authorization and internationalization scenarios. It is decided to continue with only two of the selected frameworks due to lack of time once the simple application has been implemented successfully. Lightswitch beta 1 is chosen for discontinuation due to an uncertain future for the application as it is the first public available beta of the product. Based on the experience from the implementations performed, the time required for them as well as how the platforms fit the company’s requirements the .NET platform with Silverlight + WCF RIA Services is recommended as the base for future applications.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the problems Distributed Caching can be used to solve and evaluates a couple of Distributed Caching Platforms targeting the .NET Framework. Basic concepts and functionality that is general for all distributed caching platforms is covered in chapter 2. We discuss how Distributed Caching can resolve synchronization problems when using multiple local caches, how a caching tier can relieve the database and improve the scalability of the system, and also how memory consumption can be reduced by storing data distributed. A couple of .NET-based caching platforms are evaluated and tested, these are Microsoft AppFabric Caching, ScaleOut StateServer and Alachisoft NCache. For a quick overview see the feature comparison-table in chapter 3 and for the main advantages and disadvantages of each platform see section 6.1. The benchmark results shows the difference in read performance, between local caching and distributed caching as well as distributed caching with a coherent local cache, for each evaluated Caching Platform. Local caching frameworks and database read times are included for comparison. These benchmark results are in chapter 5.

Abstract:
This study was done against the backdrop that executives should carefully consider all the options to manage difficult periods before letting employees go, especially if they are going to rehire employees shortly after the economic recovery. Therefore, the study investigated whether investing in operational development of a plant can be used to increase feasibility, rather than to make across–the–board labour cuts. Two South African mining companies were chosen for this study. They are two investment centres at AngloGold Ashanti, Mine X Ltd. and Mine Z Ltd. The investigating project was done at Mine X to extract gold from the neighbouring Mine Z. Mine X will have access to the minerals 40 years in advance of Mine Z due to insufficient essential infrastructure at Mine Z. The life–time of the project is 18 years (estimated). The main objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility, from Mine X’s point of view, with a deepening project including Mine Z. The most significant aspect will be to determine which investment timeframe decision will gain Mine X a feasible position in terms of economic growth. This will be achieved by the following secondary objectives in making a capital investment decision: 1. To describe the nature and significance of investment decision making. 2. To recognise appropriate capital investment evaluation techniques in conjunction with sensitivity analysis. 3. To apply the techniques and sensitivity analysis in order to make a decision of a possible, feasible investment opportunity at Mine X. 4. To develop a framework to identify the project’s components and associate and access difficulties for Mine X‘s project lifecycle. The feasibility study undertakes multiple scenarios and provides recommendations and a final report, based on the scenario that is the most viable. The following techniques which were identified were used to analyse the feasibility of the project: Net present value, internal rate of return and payback period. All these above techniques will be analysed in three different scenarios, namely: 1. Mine X will stay with its current operations without any new projects. 2. The development project will begin immediately. 3. A six–month delay in development of the project. The study found that the net present value was positive, the internal rate of return was more than the discount rate and the payback period was shorter than the project’s life–time regarding to all three above–mentioned scenarios. The highest net present value is calculated in case the project starts immediately. Both the internal rate of return and the payback period indicated that a six month delay in the project is the most viable. After considering all the facts, the study concluded due to the highest net present value the best feasible recommendation would be to start the project immediately. The value of this study is that it is the first study to investigate the relationship between the viability to delay or to start the investment project immediately in the South African mining industry. This study is also unique, since it takes into account how mining industries world–wide can achieve long–term success through development projects without losing key players, due to impulsive short–term downsizing decisions.

Abstract:
In general, the performance evaluation of productive systems considers normalized criteria of the efficient use of technological transformation resources (such as machines and raw materials), information processing and handling/transportation operations. However, there are no normalized criteria or rules to evaluate the performance of a productive system in the context of sustainability. Thus, this paper introduces an approach to identify and to evaluate the performance indicators related to the sustainability of productive systems, specifically for geographically disperse cases, i.e., disperse productive system (DPS), in which the processes are in a distributed and disperse architecture. The proposed approach is based on a framework aimed to measure sustainability key-performance-indicators (KPIs) that evaluate the sustainability of a system. The framework considers the ANSI/ISA-95 standard and productive processes modeled using Petri net. The sustainability assessment methodology considers the balance of sustainability indicators, which depend on economic, environmental, social, and technological aspects, besides the commitment of all the partners involved.

Jum'a, Luay. "Analysis of Logistics Service Quality (LSQ) factors among Net Promoter Score (NPS) segments for third party logistics (3PL) industry in Jordan : development of LSQ evaluation framework & improvement matrix." Thesis, Brunel University, 2016. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.707769.

Abstract:
Logistics Service Quality (LSQ) is considered one of the most important tools contributing to customer satisfaction which explains the concern of Third Party Logistics service providers (3PLs) in analysing, measuring and improving their LSQ. The limited research performed investigating LSQ and customer satisfaction relationships with adequate segmentation considerations, as well as the limited managerial tools developed to improve LSQ factors in a business-to-business (B2B) context are the main motivations for this study. Therefore, the aim of the study is focused on investigating the LSQ factors that are of most importance to different types of B2B customers, which will be segmented through Net Promoter Score (NPS) latent variable. In addition to this, this work seeks to develop a tool that provides guidance for LSQ improvements in the context of 3PL industry in Jordan. This study utilised systematic literature review (SLR) process in order to identify existing published work; this was achieved through searches in 14 well-known online databases. As a result, a comprehensive LSQ evaluation framework comprising 14 LSQ factors was developed by combining all LSQ factors from previous works. Quantitative analyses were conducted based on questionnaires’ data collected from 293 B2B customers of 3PLs in Jordan. The findings of the study showed that LSQ of 3PL companies in Jordan is at a satisfactory level and supported the significance of the 14 LSQ factors in achieving B2B customer satisfaction. Further, an equation has been developed to predict B2B customer satisfaction based on LSQ factors. In addition, a significant difference in the declared and inferred LSQ importance has been found amongst NPS segments (promoters, passives and detractors) in Jordan and consequently an LSQ improvement matrix has been developed for each segment. Although the study has some limitations of being completed in one country, using crosssectional time horizon and a single key informant for data collection but it contributes to the existing body of knowledge by enhancing current understanding of LSQ factors that lead to B2B customer satisfaction and identifying priorities of LSQ factors to different segments in the 3PL industry. Further, it provides methodological contributions in the use of SLR and post-hoc segmentation. Finally, its managerial implications are useful to practitioners in the 3PL industry since the study developed a comprehensive LSQ evaluation framework and an LSQ improvement tool that can be used by 3PLs in Jordan or any other country which add value to this study.

Abstract:
Software deployment is all of the activities that make a software system available for use. An examaple of such activites can be installations, updating and removing of software. Each deployment platform can differ in quality attributes such as performance, maintainability, etc. Docker, a deployment platform using container technology offering a more modular way of deployment has become increasingly popular over the past few years. The aim of the project is to find out how a deployment with Docker would affect the performance of a clientserver application from the mining industry. Three scenarios were performed in a simulated environment for the existing as well as the potential deployment platform. Measures of roundtrip time were made for both sets of the scenarios. Results show a general decrease in performance when running the application on Docker. This is especially seen in early stages of each scenario, where Docker in average has 15 times higher roundtrip times than the existing platform. However, results gathered from each scenario suggests that while Docker does start much slower than the existing platform, in later stages of each scenarios, Docker manages to narrow the gap and be at most 1.14 times higher than the existing platform. In conclusion, while the deployment in which the existing platform is deployed on does out perform Docker, it still shows some promise and could potentially be a worthy option to look at for further work.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to get familiarized with software component Microsoft .NET Framework and the problems of methods of interest point detection. On the basis of this knowledge, it is required to develop a method for the evaluation of used detectors and then implement a console application that is simply able to evaluate the results of interest point detection methods. Such evaluation is important in the process of development of the algorithms for the detection using projected method of evaluation. The interest points are searched in several images which represent the same scene from different angles of view. The requirements also inculde creation of graphic user interface that allows an easy way to setup the evaluation conditions.

Graphic user interface has become the mainstream of today’s web-based systems. The object oriented technique and the diagrams from the Unified Modeling Language (UML) are becoming the major tools for modeling the platform independent model (PIM) of a web-based system. Once the PIM is constructed, the results can then be transformed into its platform specific model and template code based on the model driven architecture (MDA) approach. However, the detailed guideline for the transformation from PIM to the Microsoft .Net platform is lacking. Therefore, this study presents a methodology which provides guidelines for the transformation from PIM to Microsoft .Net platform for a web-based system. The research methodology is articulated using the design science research methodology. A usability evaluation with a real-world web-based system case is performed to demonstrate its applicability. The results indicated that with this proposed method, the system developer can effectively transform the PIM of a web-based system into its Microsoft .Net platform and template code.

Efficient analysis of equipment scenarios can reduce time to confirmation of equipment scenarios in the equipment developing phase, and it also can enhance feasibility analysis of scenario reconfiguration in the equipment usage phase. However, regardless of developing, reconfiguration, and extension of equipment scenarios, these results of scenario analyses were limited from the conventional models which should be reconstructed and re-evaluated by change to answer whether the reconfigured scenario is feasible. Consequently, this paper will consider how to effectively construct an equipment behavior model, especially behavior sequences, to efficiently analyze the scenario with a model framework. We propose a method for evaluating feasibility of Reconfigurable Equipment Behavior (REB) based on the Extendable Petri Nets Framework (EPNF). In the EPNF, a variety of REB components were constructed to specify various equipment behaviors. The specific scenarios by equipment are described by UML based notation use cases and sequence diagrams, transformed into Petri Nets using the proposed mapping rules and forward transformation method, and synthesized with the corresponding REB components to construct the specific Petri Nets behavior model. After the model constructed in developing phase, the feasible behavior sequences of the equipment can be evaluated by the proposed hierarchical method and the partial reachability tree. As a case study on a semiconductor cluster tool, the results indicated that the EPNF can efficiently integrate and unify the scenarios reconfigured into the behavior model to evaluate variety combinations of the equipment behaviors. Especially, on acquiring the feasible sequences, the REBs can be derived by the partial reachability tree that avoids the explosion problem in searching sequences.
