Full textThis paper describes the design and construction of a semi-autonomous quadrotor aircraft approximately 1 meter in diameter. Because of the mechanical simplicity of the aircraft, the design challenges primarily centered on the electrical and computer engineering (ECE) tasks, and was used as a capstone design experience in an undergraduate ECE program. An onboard microcontroller based system uses a network of digital sensors and differential thrust for autonomous attitude control. A wireless telemetry and command link allows a user to monitor the vehicle, control its direction of flight, and for flight safety control.

Spacecraft avionics initially commanded the development of the microprocessor industry, enabling microprocessors to be designed specifically for the reliability demands posed by the radiation environment of space. However, microprocessor have shifted their focus from ensuring reliable operations to maximizing performance, forcing the price of spacecraft avionics to balloon. Costing over three orders of magnitude more than current state of the art general purpose processors, while performing operations an order of magnitude slower. These differences stem from the reliability requirements of operating in space, typically achieved through hardware-based modifications. While these solutions generate the necessary reliability, they limit the engineering options for the system and force the use of outdated technology. A solution researched but never widely implemented, is the use of error detection and correction software algorithms. An ideal design lies in the combination of hardware and software methods for providing reliability. A new avionics architecture was designed to implement a system using hardware and software to achieve reliability with COTS products. The architecture was applied to the CASTOR satellite as its primary avionics system, for verification testing of the architecture's functionality. This architecture further aims to expand spacecraft usage of microcontrollers as the primary spacecraft avionics computers.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis is based on that the different tissues have different characteristics to obtain the relevant biological information. It has been wildly used to detect much biological information for decades. No matter what kind of application, their measurement hardware and algorithm are very important. Traditional LCR meters are certainly accurate, however its size, and power consumption will make it difficult for portable applications. Furthermore, previous impedance measurement can not distinguish a very small amount of the phase change, leading to considerable deviation from the actual value. This study develop a low-frequency, high-accuracy impedance measurement platform. The system utilized a microcontroller, MSP430, as the core unit. It was compared with a LCR Meter to determine the accuracy and reliability. The resulting system is a portable, low-cost, automatic and real-time display device for the convenience of the impedance measurement.

The needs of home health care systems are getting stronger day by day in the aging population. This research used a device called ‘Vital-Belt’ designed by Dr. Chih-Cheng Lu, NHRI. The device acquires two bio-signals in real-time: ECG and signals from 3-axis accelerometer for detecting falling. We added a very low power microcontroller MSP430 into this device to process these bio-signals. Motion artifact is the most critical problem in the ambulatory ECG. In this research, we emphasized the processing of the ECG disturbed by motion artifact. A dynamic threshold was determined by calculating the activity levels from accelerometer. We used this method to detect heart rate and abnormal beats in real-time and transmitted abnormal ECG to a computer or PDA via Bluetooth. From five healthy persons, the averaged accuracy of R-peak detection was 99.85%, 99.26% and 99.16% in standing, walking (4 miles/hr) and slow running (6 miles/hr) situations, respectively. The averaged detection error rate was 1.45%, 1.84% and 1.89%, respectively. The experiments were performed in a treadmill. For atrial premature contraction (APC) and ventricular premature contraction (VPC) detection, test four MIT/BIH data sets (105, 116, 118, and 119) were used. The averaged accuracy of R-peak detection was 99.89%. The averaged accuracy of APC and VPC detection was 93.81%.

The objective of this dissertation is to carry out a bio-medical monitoring system based on the embedded System-on-a-Chip(SoC) tech. We design two systems, which are the simple ECG signal record system and complex pulse signal measurement system. Both systems are developed by Programmable SoC Microcontraller(PSoC),and discuss the advantages and faults between them. In this study, they can provide a standard industrial interface RS232 to real-time measure bio-signal and display in PC . In order to identity the performance of both systems, We test and verify separately for each function of the model for PSoC. The results showed that it meets our specification of systems. It is proved by the embedded SoC tech, the occupied area can be minimized, and the expense of the system can be reduced. Therefore, this way is convenient to use.

The Internet of Things (IoT) gateway serves as a key intermediary between a considerable amount of smart things and their corresponding cloud networking servers. Academics and industry members have invested substantial research and development resources into developing IoT gateway-related technology and products. In small and low-power IoT applications, conventional gateway systems mainly use microcontrollers to perform lower-layer device network management, upper-level cloud server functions, and remote mobile computation services. However, regarding system scalability and computation and communication efficiency, solutions that use a single microcontroller cannot cater to the demands of IoT regarding large data collection, management, communication networks, and various other services. Therefore, this study proposed an innovative multimicrocontroller system framework, combining a field-programmable gate array-based hardware bridge and scalable multiple microcontrollers to construct a master–slave architecture of a high-performance multimicrocontroller IoT gateway. The proposed system features distributed processing, high-speed communication among microcontrollers, and compatibility with a wide variety of peripheral devices. In the end of this study, we implement an IoT application system case to verify our multimicrocontroller IoT gateway which has obviously more performance advantages than before.

This thesis aims to design and implement the driving system for the treadmill. The system is designed in a microcontroller ATmega32. The traditional speed sensor uses the reed switch as the sensor component, but its response time is too long while operating in low speed. To improve the stability in low speed and the response time, we adds the voltage and the current of the motor as the compensation signals. The experiment approves that the proposed method has good functions of speed control when the system operates in high and low speed.

Full textNowadays mobile robots are expected to be a desire at several services to afford man facilities and increase safety in any kind of duties. Mobility is a key issue in robotics and a challenging subject for any research and development. It combines cognitive capabilities focused on sensorial input and human interaction with intelligent control of the drive systems and requires real mechatronics engineering solutions to enable robust and reliable operation. In the European Centre for Mechatronics [W1] mobile robots have been research subjects for years. A mobile platform with semi-autonomous functionality has been developed years ago. It has been used as a demonstration and test platform to study mobility and cognitive control. In the University of Minho [W3] and RWTH University [W2] that kind of research is also important and the industry support gives a solid development sign to the institutions. As the control system capacity on board of the vehicle has reached limits, a new system architecture with more powerful controller elements was planned to replace the old one. In this context the key objective of the project was to design and develop a new embedded system capable of controlling the mobile platform drives using ATMega microcontroller technology.

This Thesis investigates the design and implementation of a distributed multi-microcontroller based control system development environment. A DSPIC microcontroller (MCU) based system architecture is established first. The system contains three major parts, namely, sensing and attitude determination section, control section, and ground section. The sensing and attitude determination section consists of four circuit boards (master control board, slave control board, sensor board, and power supply board) with identical size ( ). The sensor boards contains three axes inertial measurement unit (include gyro, accelerometer, and electronic compass) and a GPS receiver. The sensors and the DSPIC MCUs are connected over an I2C (inter-integrated circuit) data bus with the DSPIC on the master control board as the master MCU. Unscented Kalman filter based attitude estimation is incorporated in this embedded system. With incorporation of modular design, combination of the master control board and the slave control board will form the control section of the system. Communications between sections are achieved through USART interface. Because of modular design, the system can be easily expanded to integrate other avionics functions.

At present, mainstream AI technology mostly relies on high-performance computer hosts, and embedded systems running on microcontrollers are rare. If the mature AI technology can be run on the microcontroller, you can not only let AI technology be applied in more fields, but also bring considerable power saving in many applications. In this research, the virtual machine was added to enable the microcontroller to be flexibly deployed, so that the deep neural network application implemented in the microcontroller can be deployed in a more convenient manner. After making up for the gap in the convenience of the deep neural network between the microcontroller and the host computer, the aforementioned goals will become feasible. The subsequent experiments also verified the function of the virtual machine and the correctness of the implemented neural network. This research preserves the advantages of the microcontroller and overcomes its shortcomings while bringing deep neural network applications into the microcontroller-based embedded system. Compared with high-energy and high-cost hosts, the extremely low power consumption system of this research will bring considerable energy savings.
