This work describes the design and implementation of a fault-tolerant microcomputer for real-time control applications. The system consists in a duplex structure and the dissimilarity concept is used in order to minimize the probability of common-mode faults. Several fault detection mecanisms were incorporated to increase the coverage of the system.

Abstract:
The mining of coal within 110 feet below a previously mined seam creates interaction effects which can be detrimental to work in the lower seam. These interaction effects are characterized by zones of very high stress and result in floor and roof instability and pillar crushing. Recent developments in the field of ground control make it possible to determine with a certain degree of confidence the location of these zones and estimate the degree to which the interaction will affect the lower seam. This information has been incorporated into a software package for microcomputers which will predict lower seam problems and suggest design criteria for minimizing the difficulties which will be encountered.

The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) publishes only the results of those surveys that their agency performs, as well as other surveys that meet certain criteria. The advantages of a state office which would disseminate NGS control data as well as all other survey data within the state are discussed. Since NGS now distributes its data on floppy diskettes, the design of a microcomputer database to access this information is investigated. This thesis focuses on such a database system operated mainly by the end-user of control data. An integrated software system, in which. related computational programs are linked to the database, is also considered. The dBase III package, as one software alternative, is examined. Applicability to geographic information systems is also explored. Data formats, file sizes, and administrative concerns are dealt with, and future research and development in these and related areas are proposed.

Abstract:
This thesis dwells on the issue of using personal computers in real-time control and data acquisition applications. A data acquisition and control system is designed to acquire temperature, humidity, air volume and solar radiation data and control the inside temperature, air volume and maximizes solar radiation inside an ecologically closed test structure. The focus is on an Intel 8088 or 80286 based personal computer. A personal computer is used for development of the software and the final real-time system runs on a PC as well. This eliminates the need of expensive cross compilers and in-circuit emulators. A control and data acquisition task is selected and a solution using an IBM compatible personal computer is demonstrated. Various advantages and disadvantages for selecting the personal computer and development software and environment are discussed. Solutions to various problems encountered are discussed.

Moyers, Kevin Keith. "A microcomputer-based data acquisition system for diagnostic monitoring and control of high-speed electric motors." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41576.

Full text
Abstract:
A microcomputer-based data acquisition and control system was designed for the diagnostic monitoring and control of high-speed electric motors. The system was utilized in high-speed bearing life-testing, using an electric motor as a test vehicle.

Bearing vibration and outer race temperature were continuously monitored for each ball bearing in the motor. In addition, the stator winding and motor casing temperature were monitored.

The monitoring system was successful in detecting an unbalance in the rotor caused by the loss of a small piece of balancing putty. The motor was shut down before any further damage occurred. In a separate test, excessive clearance between a bearing outer race and the motor caused high vibration readings. The motor was monitored until the condition began to deteriorate and the bearing outer race began to spin significantly. Again, the monitoring system powered down the motor before any significant damage occurred.

The speed of the motor tested is controlled by a PWM (pulse width modulation) technique. The resulting voltage and current waveforms are asymmetrical and contain high frequency components. Special circuitry was designed and constructed to interface sensors for measuring the voltage and current inputs to a spectrum analyzer. Using frequency and order analysis techniques, the real and reactive power inputs to the three·phase motor were measured.

Abstract:
This report discusses in great detail the various research, design, and development stages of the Produce Sorting Microcomputer developed for HAGAN ENGINEERING Inc. The two-semester Clinical Research project has been approved by the graduate committee at the School of Engineering at the University of the Pacific and fulfills the requirements towards a Master Degree in Electrical Engineering. The project was selected based on its complexity, feasibility, the time span it required to complete, and its relevance to the area of real time microcomputer design. In addition, the design constraints and specifications were to be dictated solely by HAGAN ENGINEERING Inc. and all further modifications were to be discussed and approved by HAGAN. These limitations created a professional industry-like atmosphere, which is one of the goals of the Clinical Research Program. A brief User's Manual will accompany the MC68000 board; it will contain all the vital information about the system that a programmer or a technician might need to understand the system. The manual wall contain the complete circuit schematic, a parts list, general design features, and all the software properties of the system (memory map, interrupt tables register map).

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes some enhancements of the control and communication aspects of the implementation of a National Plan in any developing country. A cybernetic model for the viable system is used following the approach developed by Beer. Weaknesses of typical current practice are identified and a hierarchical organization, based on the model, is suggested as an alternative, in which all the systems implementing and monitoring the N. P. are considered as one single system, making its functions easier to recognize. Deficiencies, which are characteristic of the situation of developing countries, are identified and remedies are suggested to increase effectiveness. The model provides for the cybernetic principle of freedom, allowing the creation of autonomous subsystems with their own computational needs. A distributed system using micros, databases, and national communication networks, is described, which provides the requirements for realizing the suggested organization, together with packaged software to compensate for missing experience and know-how. The proposals are made in the form of a comprehensive package whose built-in complexity (sophistication) is very high. It is still effective even with inexperienced users but can take full advantage of their developing knowledge. This thesis includes listings and sample runs of some portions of the package which, for purposes of demonstration, have been implemented in dBASE II and an 8080 assembly program on an Intertec Superbrain QD microcomputer.

Full text
Abstract:
Run-of-mine (ROM) coal sampling is one of the most important factors in determining the disposition of ROM coal for an overall emission control strategy. Determination of the amount of sample, or still better, the frequency of ROM coal sampling is thus essential to the analysis of overall emission control strategies. A simulation model of a portion of the Upper Freeport coal seam in western Pennsylvania was developed employing conditional simulation. On the simulated deposit, different mining methods were simulated to generate ROM coal data. ROM coal data was statistically analyzed to determine the sampling frequency. Two schemes were suggested: (1) the use of geostatistical techniques if there is spatial correlation in ROM coal quality, and (2) the use of classical statistics if the spatial correlation in ROM coal quality is not present. Conditions under which spatial correlation in ROM coal quality can be expected are also examined. To link the ROM coal and coals from other sources to coal stockpiles and subsequently to solve coal blending problems, where varying qualities of stockpiled coals are normally used, an interactive computer program was developed. Simple file-handling, for stockpiling problems, and multi-objective goal programming technique, for blending problems, provided their solutions. The computer program was made suitable for use on both minicomputer and microcomputer. Menu-driven and interactive capabilities give this program a high level of flexibility that is needed to analyze and solve stockpiling and blending problems at the power plant.

Abstract:
A serial to parallel interface (SPI) has been designed for a personal computer (PC) controlled solar spectroradiometer. The SPI allows for serial RS-232 communication between the radiometer and the PC. The serial data from the PC is converted to discrete, parallel control lines that connect to the various subunits of the radiometer. Data from these subunits are received in parallel at the SPI and converted to serial for transmission to the PC. Pascal programming is used to control all of the radiometer functions including tracking, filterwheel rotation and data gathering.

Abstract:

Recent developments in virtual instrument technologies and interactive educational environments, greatly change the traditional approach to teaching and practical experimentation at educational level and training and studying in the industry. Software technologies can be used to simulate real experiments in a virtual laboratory. We can also conduct the experiment at any time and any place through the Internet. Besides, the experimental efficiency can be increased and the cost of the instruments and equipments of the laboratory can be reduced. The purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of the virtual laboratory and the effect to traditional experiments. In order to resolve the problem of the microcomputer I/O control experiments in the industrial high school, we develop, design and implement a virtual laboratory for microcomputer I/O control. Five models are provided in this system, including example simulation, circuit debug, circuit test, circuit application and work assessment. It can assist students in solving the problems caused by a software program or a hardware circuit and performing a testing of the developed I/O control system. The system can also be used to promote the learning efficiency through self-assessment. Besides, by choosing some industrial high students as experimental objects, experiments and questionnaire have been conducted to evaluate the effect of this system.

In this thesis, we propose a PID-Fuzzy logic controller for improving speed control of the voltage-frequency control (V/f control) -based induction motors. The proposed speed controller combines a modified Ziegler-Nichols PID, with fuzzy inferences. The proposed controller is also implemented using an Arduino microcomputer. Matlab/Simulink experimental show that the speed tracking of induction motors using the proposed controller can achieve satisfactory performance under cases with/or without load disturbances. Experimental results coincide with Matlab/Simulink experimental. This demonstrates that for low cost consideration, the microcontroller-based speed tracking of induction motors is viable.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
A group of lesser used analog control system design techniques, generally termed parameter plane methods, is examined through the use of an IBM compatible microcomputer program developed as part of this thesis. The coefficients of a system's characteristic polynomial are determined by the plant and any added compensators. As these coefficients are varied , so too are the roots of the characteristic equation and therefore the system response in terms of bandwidth, settling time, etc. In the parameter plane method, a designer selects two parameters of a system's compensator(s) . The parameters commonly represent such attributes as a compensator gain, pole, or zero but can be any linear system function. One or more system characteristics dictating desired system performance, such as relative damping or undamped natural frequency, are computer model inputs. This paper provides a microcomputer-based control experience for a transverse flux linear switched reluctance machine (TFLSRM) with rule-based compensation techniques. By using the developed state-space modeling and the derived system parameters, various control strategies will be developed to improve the dynamic characteristics of the TFLSRM under different operating condi- tions. By appropriate microcomputer hardware and software design and experimental verifications, the adequacies of the overall control schemes can be confirmed. It is thus believed that the proposed microcomputer-based TFLSRM control system can provide satisfactory characteristics suitable for dynamic linear motion operations.

In Taiwan, beverage stands selling bubble tea are prevalent. Tea-based beverages from these stands are prepared manually and fully automated machines for preparing tea-based beverages have not yet been developed. Thus, in this study, a fully automated beverage blender was successfully developed. The requirements for making tea-based beverages differ depending on the flavor selected. A single-chip microcomputer was embedded in the beverage blender to control the complex procedures for making tea-based beverages; they tasted as though they were made manually. This method is more efficient than the manual method for handling large quantities of orders, and it is also more consistent at preserving the original flavor. The beverage blender in this study was designed to produce tea-based beverages at beverage stands. A single-chip microcomputer was employed to control the proportion of the ingredients. A layer of foam over the tea-based beverage was then produced when it was stirred. The beverage blender prepared tea-based beverages faster than a human could and of identical quality. An automatic process provided customers with plenty of choices for flavor and ingredients. The beverage blender did not occupy much space and could efficiently process various flavors of tea-based beverages with guaranteed quality. In addition, it could process numerous orders in a short time, thereby solving the problem of personnel shortages at beverage stands. Artificial intelligence for controlling these beverage blenders could be incorporated into their production in the future. The objective is to sell the blender to families and businesses and eventually to global markets.

Abstract:
Information security has become a much discussed subject all over the world in the last few years. This is because information security is no longer a luxury, but a necessity in all organisations. The securing of information is not an easy task because information security is flexible and always seems to be in a state of development. This means that information security has undergone different development changes due to new technologies in the past few years. Information security became prominent around 50 years ago and had a very strict technical approach. In this approach, industries mainly worked with mainframes, with little or no concept of management aspects such as security policies or awareness programmes. The technical approach thus included little or no management effort in terms of information security. The need to manage information security began when new technologies such as the Internet and the World Wide Web were introduced to the information security environment. This caused information security to shift from the technical to the more managerial approach. The move of information security from the technical to the managerial approach may be identified through different development trends. These development trends have occurred mainly to improve information security management in any organisation. The primary purpose of this dissertation is therefore to identify and investigate different development trends that have an influence on information security, especially from a managerial point of view.

With the great advance of technology, the stable and efficient power requirements are highly demanded. The power converters used in parallel can provide the power supply with high reliability and high power output. The paralleled power converters must ensure that the output current of each module is with the same current according to current sharing technology. Therefore, this study intends to use Arduino as a control core to replace multiple analog control IC and implement the current sharing controller by software. The developed multi-module parallel DC-DC digital power converter ensures each power module can evenly share the load current, then improve the efficiency of multi-module power supply. The experimental results show that the error rate of the paralleled current sharing technology in this study can maintain in 5% and the efficiency can achieve 90% or more. In addition, by Bluetooth interface, we use App Inventor based on Arduino environmental development tools to write a remote monitoring program. Then we can make the connection between a mobile device and Arduino via a wireless way. Users can adjust the controller parameters from remote online to save the tuning time of the controller, and monitor the system information by mobile devices from remote area in real time.
