Abstract:
The research offered in this submission presents the case for a PhD by portfolio and is presented in two parts: an 'Overview' and 'The Evidence'. It explores the synergies between resource planning, sustainability, and regeneration policy associated with the development of tourism. These processes are linked particularly with environmental and cultural resource issues within European and global contexts as well as more specific planning issues within the UK and Wales. Three projects are presented; they address culture and environmental tourism themes in project 1, specific interests in urban planning, regeneration and tourism in project 2, and rural tourism issues in project 3. The projects follow a chronological course that illustrates how the research has progressed between 1995 and 2003. They show development from an initial broad interest in planning and sustainable development issues, to more focussed work on heritage and cultural tourism niche markets within more recent urban and rural contexts. The findings from the projects explore notions of planning, regeneration, sustainability and the relationships and synergies that occur between these processes and the development of specialist tourism. The research conclusions from all three projects suggest there still remain critical policy, resource planning and management issues for achieving sustainability, protecting resources and developing new tourism opportunities. This is particularly pertinent for the effective implementation of sustainable tourism. Issues concerning the development of niche tourism markets as a sustainable option have been a key research focus. Concerns are raised regarding the role of planning policy, long term strategy, institutional support for sustainable tourism, empowerment of local communities, and tensions between market priorities vis-a-vis conserving environmental and cultural resources. The degree of 'trade off between these often conflicting policy goals are also discussed. In a broader context, evidence from the projects document the changing dimensions of planning, regeneration and sustainable development and tourism policies over nearly a decade and draw conclusions on the challenges still confronting these processes today. In this respect evidence from the projects shows that there is generally more divergence than convergence in policy initiatives which encourage tourism development linked to sustainability. This is particularly the case when alternative forms of tourism are considered. The main conclusion synthesised from the projects illustrate that the development of alternative tourism will challenge resourcing and planning activities as these markets look set to grow over the next decade. The portfolio proposes that developing a framework to ensure the successful implementation of new sustainable tourism markets will make strategic planning an increasingly important priority and a future focus for tourism research in this respect. The emerging and fairly recent concept of 'cultural regeneration' is proposed as a focus for this further research.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis is tasked to evaluate the company Kordárna Inc. with the view of its sale within the frame of reorganization as a nonliquidating solution to its insolvency. The evaluation of the company Kordárna Inc. is performed to the date of January 1st, 2009. By then the company, due to many unfavorable conditions, falls into existential problems that have to be immediately solved. The reorganization plan is allowed and processed within the framework of higher creditors' satisfaction. An integral part of this plan is also the desirable evaluation of the company Kordárna Inc. with the view of its sale to a new investor. Within these issues, both the detailed external and internal analysis of the company and the financial analysis of the 5 preceding fiscal periods are processed (years 2004-2008). Consequently, based on many assumptions, the financial plan for the 4 following fiscal periods (2009-2012) is conducted, and the evaluation of the company Kordárna using 4 evaluation methods -- FCFF, FCFE, EVA and Liquidation value methods -- is processed.

Abstract:
City models in 3D are a growing factor in GIS and it has been demonstrated that rescue times will be reduced for emergency services with the use of 3D GIS. The work presented in this thesis deals with network analysis in 2D and 3D and has been carried out on behalf of Gävle municipality. The task has been carried out with two main objectives. The first objective was to compare processing times for Dijkstra's search algorithm for networks (one smaller network based on the house of administration (förvaltningshuset) in Gävle and one overdimensioned network) in 3D and the corresponding ones in 2D in order to determine the difference. The second objective was to develop an application which allows 3D guidance for visitors from the reception to the required personnel; the resulting route is then obtained and visualized in a 3D model. The work has mainly been conducted with ESRI ArcGIS Desktop 10 and ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit 10. The programming has been carried out with C# in Visual Studio 2010. The application works by dynamically retrieving employee information from a table by using SQL-queries and individual routes are generated for each search. The analysis results for the process times show that there are no significant differences between the 2D and 3D networks. The conclusion to be drawn is that the process time is not a reason to opt out of a 3D environment for network analysis. In the future there is great potential for network analysis in 3D, especially in conjunction with 2D networks.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work a new material, the conducting polymer-DNA composite, has been reported for the first time due to its promise in micro extraction, transfer, and release of cations under controlled potential conditions by using electrochemically assisted solid phase micro extraction (SPME). The Polypyrrole/DNA composite can be formed easily by oxidation of pyrrole monomers in the presence of chromosomal DNA by electropolymerization. Environmental significant pollutants such as Cd, Pb, Hg, Co, Zn, Cu, and Bi metal ions can be extracted from the aqueous solution and are able to be transferred to another medium defined as the release solution where the metals were detected by anodic stripping voltammetry. Using Cd2+ as a model, this method has been examined to optimize its operational condition. Extraction efficiency and potential interference for this method were studied.

Boone, George E. "Emotion, community development, and the physical environment: An experimental investigation of measurements." UKnowledge, 2013. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/cld_etds/10.

Full text
Abstract:
A wide range of research fields have studied how emotions and behavior are affected by the physical environment. This gestalt theorist approach of experimental research as well seeks to measure emotion (using the valence-arousal scale) and micro-scale community development interactions when weighted physical environment factors are adjusted. Community development (CD) interactions at the micro-scale have received but slight attention from scholars in the CD research field and this study aims partially to investigate developing objective measures from social observations. CD interactions from recordings along with self-reported emotion through surveys in four quasi-experimental groups (where the environments were constructed based on peer-reviewed literature to cause emotional reactions) and one control group made up the data collected for this experiment. While the results of this experiment displayed apparent convincing quantitative differences in both CD interactions and emotion when the physical environment was manipulated, the results of a one-way ANOVA indicated no statistical significance to either dependent variable. The conclusions suggest limiting the physical factors of the environment to produce more precise changes as a result of the manipulated quasi environments.

Chapman, P. D. "Application of diffusion laws to composting : theory, implications, and experimental testing : a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D. [i.e. Doctor of Philosophy] at Lincoln University /." Diss., Lincoln University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/819.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding the fundamentals of composting science from a pragmatic perspective of necessity involves mixtures of different sizes and types of particles in constantly changing environmental conditions, in particular temperature. The complexity of composting is affected by this environmental variation. With so much "noise" in the system, a question arises as to the need to understand the detail of this complexity as understanding any part of composting with more precision than this level of noise is not likely to result in greater understanding of the system. Yet some compost piles generate offensive odours while others don‟t and science should be able to explain this difference. A driver for this research was greater understanding of potential odour, which is assumed to arise from the anaerobic core of a composting particle. It follows that the size of this anaerobic core could be used as an indicator of odour potential. A first step in this understanding is the need to determine which parts of a composting particle are aerobic, from which the anaerobic proportion can be determined by difference. To this end, this thesis uses a finite volume method of analysis to determine the distribution of oxygen at sub-particle scales. Diffusion laws were used to determine the thickness of each finite volume. The resulting model, called micro-environment analysis, was applied to a composting particle to enable determination of onion ring type volumes of compost (called micro-environments) containing substrates (further subdivided into substrate fractions) whose concentrations could be determined to high precision by the application of first-order degradation kinetics to each of these finite volumes. Determination of the oxygen concentration at a micro-environment's inner boundary was achieved by using the Stępniewski equation. The Stępniewski model was derived originally for application to soil aeration and enables each micro-environment to have its own oxygen uptake rate and diffusion coefficient. This first version of micro-environment analysis was derived from the simpler solution to diffusion laws, based on the assumption of non-diffusible substrate. It was tested against three sets of experimental data with two different substrates: Particle size trials using dog sausage as substrate – where the peak composting rate was successfully predicted, as a function of particle size. Temperature trials using pig faeces and a range of particle sizes – the results showed the potential of micro-environment analysis to identify intriguing temperature effects, in particular, a different temperature effect (Q10) and fraction proportion was indicated for each substrate fraction. Smaller particle sizes, and possibly outward diffusion of substrate confounded a clear experimental signal. Diffusion into a pile trials which showed that the time course of particles deeper in the pile could be predicted by the physics of oxygen distribution. A fully computed prediction would need an added level of computational complexity in micro-environment analysis, arising from there being two intertwined phases, gas phase and substrate (particle) phase. Each phase needs its own micro-environment calculations which can not be done in isolation from each other. Unexplainable parts of the composting time course are likely to be partly explained by the outward diffusion of substrate towards the inward-moving oxygen front. Although the possibility of alternative electron acceptors can not be discounted as a partial explanation. To test the theory, a new experimental reactor was developed using calorimetry. With an absolute sensitivity of 0.132 J hr-1 L-1 and a measurement frequency of 30 minutes, the reactor was able to detect the energy required to humidify the input air, and "see" when composting begins to decline as oxygen is consumed. Optimisation of the aeration pumping frequency using the evidence from the data was strikingly apparent immediately after setting the optimum frequency. Micro-environment analysis provides a framework by which several physical effects can be incorporated into compost science.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Zulu
The environment in which a business operates consists of various forces which exert positive or negative influences on the business. Since they contribute to or deter from the achievement of business objectives, it is essential that they be identified and investigated. The aim of this study was to determine the environmental forces which affect the operations of small, medium and micro independent caterers in Cape Town. In this context, the micro, market and macro-environments were examined. It is hoped that the results of the study will assist these caterers in their awareness of pertinent factors in their business environment, as well as the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats arising therein. They can use this information in strategy development, to reach their objectives, and to enhance their competitive advantage and profitability. Primary data was collected from the business owners or managers through an online survey. The survey covered firmographic business details, as well as demographic details of the owners/managers. Thereafter, their opinions were elicited regarding the impact of various factors in their business environment. The main findings are the following: The greatest positive impacts on the small, medium and micro independent caterers are the abilities of the owners/managers, relationships with suppliers, the internet, and the control of materials and production processes. The greatest challenges faced are financial resources, marketing strategies, online services, competitors, customer demands, the current state of the economy and legal regulations.
