Abstract:
Delay-and-sum beamforming for classic (line-by-line) ultrasound imaging is usually performed in real-time by FPGAs and GPUs. However, when a high-frame-rate (HFR) has to be achieved, beamforming becomes challenging. Here, the echoes following the transmission of multi-line focused beams, plane waves, or diverging waves, must be simultaneously beamformed along multiple view lines. Such parallel beamforming is feasible online when the scanner is endowed with high flexibility and processing power. This talk will show how the FPGAs of the ULA-OP 256, a hardware-based open scanner, were efficiently utilized to enable parallel beamforming at high speed. The talk will also discuss how the data transfer between the scanner boards impacts the frame rate, which actually achieved 4400 frames per second through a new communication topology. The talk will also examine the image quality deterioration emerging when HFR imaging sequences are implemented in probes equipped with a microbeamformer (uB) that was designed for focused beam transmission. Simulations show how the transmitted beamwidth and uB size impact the image contrast and resolution, taking into account that the uB ASIC cannot handle multiple sets of delays and apodization weights after each transmit event. Technological improvements needed in the next generation uBs will be finally discussed.

Abstract:
Nowadays, sensors with built-in SDM are widely used in consumer, industrial, automotive, and medical applications, as they have become a cost-effective and convenient way to deliver data to digital processors. This is the case for micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS), digital microphones that convert analog audio to a PDM bitstream. However, as the SDM output a PDM signal, sensors require either built-in or external high-order decimation filters to demodulate the PDM signal to a baseband multi-bit pulse-code modulated (PCM) signal. Because of this extra circuit requirement, the implementation of sensor array algorithms, such as beamforming in embedded systems (where the processing resources are critical) or in VLSI circuits (where the power and area are crucial) becomes especially expensive as a large number of parallel decimation filters are required. This article proposes a novel architecture for beamforming algorithm implementation that fuses delay and decimation operations based on maximally flat (MAXFLAT) filters to make array processing more affordable. As proof of concept, we present an implementation example of a delay-and-sum (DAS) beamformer at given spatial and frequency requirements using this novel approach. Under these specifications, the proposed architecture requires 52% lower storage resources and 19% lower computational resources than the most efficient state-of-the-art architecture.

Abstract:
Distributed sensing has been used for enhancing signal to noise ratios for space-time localization and tracking of remote objects using phased array antennas, sonar, and radio signals. The use of these technologies in identifying mobile targets in a field, emitting acoustic signals, using a network of low-cost narrow band acoustic micro-sensing devices randomly dispersed over the region of interest, presents unique challenges. The effects of wind, turbulence, and temperature gradients and other environmental effects can decrease the signal to noise ratio by introducing random errors that cannot be removed through calibration. This paper presents methods for dynamic distributed signal processing to detect, identify, and track targets in noisy environments with limited resources. Specifically, it evaluates the noise tolerance of adaptive beamforming and compares it to other distributed sensing approaches. Many source localization and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation methods based on beamforming using acoustic sensor array have been proposed. We use the approximate maximum likelihood parameter estimation method to perform DOA estimation of the source in the frequency domain. Generally, sensing radii are large and data from the nodes are transmitted over the network to a centralized location where beamforming is done. These methods therefore depict low tolerance to environmental noise. Knowledge based localized distributed processing methods have also been developed for distributed in-situ localization and target tracking in these environments. These methods, due to their reliance only on local sensing, are not significantly affected by spatial perturbations and are robust in tracking targets in low SNR environments. Specifically, Dynamic Space-time Clustering (DSTC)-based localization and tracking algorithm has demonstrated orders of magnitude improvement in noise tolerance with nominal impact on performance. We also propose hybrid algorithms for energy efficient robust performance in very noisy environments. This paper compares the performance of hybrid algorithms with sparse beamforming nodes supported by randomly dispersed DSTC nodes to that of beamforming and DSTC algorithms. Hybrid algorithms achieve relative high accuracy in noisy environments with low energy consumption. Sensor data from a field test in the Marine base at 29 Palms, CA, were analyzed for validating the results in this paper. The results were compared to “ground truth” data obtained from GPS receivers on the vehicles.

Abstract:
We present a near-field diffraction model for spin waves in perpendicularly magnetized films applicable in any geometries of excitation fields. This model relies on Kalinikos–Slavin formalism to express the dynamic susceptibility tensor in k-space and calculate the diffraction patterns via inverse 2D-Fourier transform of the response functions. We show an excellent quantitative agreement between our model and MuMax3 micro-magnetic simulations on two different geometries of antennas. Our method benchmarks spin wave diffraction in perpendicularly magnetized films and is readily applicable for future designs of magnon beamforming and interferometric devices.

The noise of jets formed using conical and lobed nozzles has been measured. The possibility of jet noise reduction by using a lobed nozzle shape has been demonstrated. The localization of noise sources in jets formed using various nozzles has been carried out. A planar 9-beam 54-channel Bruel & Kjaer micro-phone array and Delay-and-Sum Beamforming technique were used. As a result, the position of noise sources in a turbulent jet in one-third octave frequency bands was obtained. The deviation effect of the position of noise sources when using lobed nozzles relative to the standard jet formed by a conical nozzle is demonstrated.

In order to tackle the explosive growth of data traffic and the number of terminals, 5G heterogeneous network (HetNet) has become an important evolution direction of 5G networking architecture. Densely deployed micro base stations (gNBs) in 5G HetNets will dramatically increase the handover frequency of user equipment (UE), resulting in more handover failures, and seriously reducing the user experience of mobile UE. Aiming at tackling this problem, this paper proposes a beam enhancement handover scheme with an adaptive threshold. Firstly, different beamforming gains are configured for the mobile UE in the overlapping area of two gNBs to improve the signal strength received by the UE at the edge of gNB coverage. Secondly, for mobile UE with different speeds, adaptive handover decision parameters are configured, and reference signal receiving strength (RSRP) as well as reference signal receiving quality (RSRQ) are used for joint handover decisions to achieve reliable handover. The simulation results verify that the proposed scheme can effectively improve the signal strength of the edge area, and the adaptive joint handover decision algorithm based on UE speed can also effectively improve the handover success probability.

In this paper, we introduce a novel acoustic source localization in a three-dimensional (3D) space, based on a direction estimation technique. Assuming an acoustic source at a distance from adjacent microphones, its waves spread in a planar form called a planar wavefront. In our system, the directions and steering angles between the acoustic source and the microphone array are estimated based on a planar wavefront model using a delay and sum beamforming (DSBF) system and an array of two-dimensional (2D) microelectromechanical system (MEMS) microphones. The proposed system is designed with parallel processing hardware for real-time performance and implemented using a cost-effective field programmable gate array (FPGA) and a micro control unit (MCU). As shown in the experimental results, the localization errors of the proposed system were less than 3 cm when an impulsive acoustic source was generated over 1 m away from the microphone array, which is comparable to a position-based system with reduced computational complexity. On the basis of the high accuracy and real-time performance of localizing an impulsive acoustic source, such as striking a ball, the proposed system can be applied to screen-based sports simulation.

RF-MEMS, i.e., Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) for Radio Frequency (RF) passive components, exhibit interesting characteristics for the upcoming 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, in which reconfigurable broadband and frequency-agile devices, like high-order switching units, tunable filters, multi-state attenuators, and phase shifters will be necessary to enable mm-Wave services, small cells, and advanced beamforming. In particular, satellite communication systems providing high-speed Internet connectivity utilize the K and Ka bands, which offer larger bandwidth compared to lower frequencies. This paper focuses on two design concepts of multi-state phase shifter designed and manufactured in RF-MEMS technology. The networks feature 4 switchable stages (16 states) and are developed for the K and Ka bands. The proposed phase shifters are realized in a surface micromachining RF-MEMS technology and the experimentally measured parameters are compared with Finite Element Method (FEM) multi-physical electromechanical and RF simulations. The simulated phase shifts at both the operating bands fit well the measured value, despite the measured losses (S21) are larger than 5–7 dB if compared to simulations. However, such a non-ideality has a technological motivation that is explained in the paper and that will be fixed in the manufacturing of future devices.

With an increasing number of applications of terahertz systems in industrial fields and communications, terahertz beamforming and beam steering techniques are required for high-speed, large-area scanning. As a promising means for beam steering, micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS)-based reflection gratings have been successfully implemented for terahertz beam control. So far, the diffraction grating efficiency is relatively low due to the limited vertical displacement range of the reflectors. In this paper, we propose a design for a reconfigurable MEMS-based reflection grating consisting of multiple subwavelength reflectors which are driven by 5-bit, high-throw electrostatic actuators. We vary the number of the reflectors per grating period and configure the throw of individual reflectors so that the reflection grating is shaped as a blazed grating to steer the terahertz beam with maximum diffraction grating efficiency. Furthermore, we provide a mathematical model for calculating the radiation pattern of the terahertz wave reflected by general reflection gratings consisting of subwavelength reflectors. The calculated and simulated radiation patterns of the designed grating show that we can steer the angle of the terahertz waves in a range of up to ± 56.4 ∘ with a maximum sidelobe level of −10 dB at frequencies from 0.3 THz to 1 THz.

Abstract:
We present a novel ultrasound transducer technology based on piezo polymers. Its fabrication process (PillarWaveTM), based on creating hexagonal micro-structured PVDF-TrFE pillars. This makes it fully flexible and allows scaling to large apertures (>15 × 15 cm2). Large area flexible transducers enable to select relevant field of view in automated post-processing. This can alleviate the need for a skilled sonographer and enable applications of echography outside clinics. To demonstrate its performance, a 128 element 8 MHz linear array is designed and manufactured. Its total thickness is 0.1 mm. Its acoustic characteristics are determined demonstrating 5.2 kPa/V transmit efficiency and 150 mV/Pa sensitivity. The receive bandwidth at -6dB is larger than 100%. A peak pressure in excess of 1 MPa at 4 cm from the array is measured in water. The transducer array is connected to a Verasonics Vantage research medical ultrasound system. The imaging performance of the array is demonstrated experimentally. Real-time imaging of an in vitro- medical phantom using plane wave compounding and delay-and-sum beamforming is demonstrated at 15 frames per second, with point spread functions at -20 dB of 1.3 and 0.92 mm in the lateral and depth directions, respectively. Finally, imaging of a human carotid in vivo is demonstrated.

This paper describes different variants of broadband and simple attenuator modules for beamforming applications, based on radio frequency micro electro-mechanical systems (RF-MEMS), framed within coplanar waveguide (CPW) structures. The modules proposed in the first part of this work differ in their actuation voltage, topology, and desired attenuation level. Fabricated samples of basic 1-bit attenuation modules, characterized by a moderate footprint of 690 × 1350 µm2 and aiming at attenuation levels of −2, −3, and −5 dB in the 24.25–27.5 GHz range, are presented in their variants featuring both low actuation voltages (5–9 V) as well as higher values (~45 V), the latter ones ensuring larger mechanical restoring force (and robustness against stiction). Beyond the fabrication non-idealities that affected the described samples, the substantial agreement between simulations and measurement outcomes proved that the proposed designs could provide precise attenuation levels up to 40 GHz, ranging up to nearly −3 dB and −5 dB for the series and shunt variants, respectively. Moreover, they could be effective building blocks for future wideband and reconfigurable RF-MEMS attenuators. In fact, in the second part of this work, combinations of the discussed cells and other configurations meant for larger attenuation levels are investigated.

In recent years, ultrasound imaging has become an indispensable tool for intra-surgical guidance. Most neuro and spine surgeries, however, are now trending towards minimally invasive approaches. In these surgeries, the entire surgery is performed using endoscopic instruments inserted into a small surgical pathway. Consequently, surgical imaging technologies such as ultrasound, must also adapt to be compatible with these new approaches where they are confined to narrow surgical corridors. We have recently developed a novel, high-resolution, endoscopic ultrasound system specifically for guiding these minimally invasive surgeries. The entire system including the probe, the electronics, and software has been designed and fabricated from the ground up. This imaging platform has recently been approved for a preliminary patient imaging study has already produced promising, first-of-its kind data during brain tumour resection and spinal cord surgeries. This presentation will discuss the challenges associated with developing high frequency (30 MHz) miniaturized micro-arrays and the associated electronic beamformer. The beamformer we have developed is based on parallelized FPGAs, can process data at rates higher than 10Tb/s, and generate frame-rates higher than 1kHz. The beamforming architecture incorporates a hybrid imaging mode that interleaves ultrafast imaging for Doppler, and line-by-line focusing for B-Mode. The Doppler mode is overlayed on the BMode image in real-time.

AbstractThe Aselliscus Stoliczkanus bat, studied here, has intricately shaped structures surrounding the nostrils. These structures are hypothesised to have influence on animals’ acoustic radiation patterns. Using micro-tomography scanning technique, a 3D digital model of the noseleaf is reconstructed and biosonar beam pattern is analysed using a finite element method based on the 3D noseleaf model. The present research focuses on the conspicuous furrows in noseleaf, and our analysis allows to conclude the followings: a) structural details in noseleaf of Aselliscus Stoliczkanus bat can produce acoustic effects even if it is not adjacent to the nostrils, b) the furrows possess frequency-selective characteristics, c) the furrows have the function to manipulate the direction and width of the outgoing ultrasound wave.

Abstract Traditional ground micro-seismic monitoring is performed by laying long survey lines. This is expensive and difficult to implement in complex mountainous areas and deep marine shale gas reservoirs in China. To address these challenges, this study has proposed a ground micro-seismic monitoring method using a sparse planar array that offers greater flexibility in implementation. This study has presented a weak signal enhancement method based on a broadband array adaptive beamforming algorithm to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of micro-seismic data collected by sparse planar arrays and to suppress coherent noise. The proposed method involves establishing a signal model for a broadband planar array, estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of broadband signals using a grid search method, and setting constraint conditions and objective functions based on the DOA results. The optimal weight vector is then calculated by solving the objective function to obtain the desired signal and suppress noise. This study has demonstrated that the proposed method effectively improved the SNR and suppressed coherent noise in synthetic and real data. It has also highlighted the effectiveness of the sparse planar array as a ground micro-seismic monitoring method and the adaptive broadband beamforming method as a practical weak signal enhancement technology.

Light controlled phased array has the advantages of fast response speed, compact system, diverse functions, and flexible control, and has been widely applied in many scientific and technological fields. Optical true delay technology (OTTD) is the most direct technical means to achieve phase delay of optical carrier signals, and it is also the most basic technical means to implement optical controlled beamforming systems. In order to fully understand the optical true delay technology, this article first elaborates on the principle of phased array antennas and the reasons for beam strabismus, and analyzes the impact of true delay on the performance of phased array radar. Then, the basic principle, technological progress, and related applications of optical true delay are introduced. Taking four common structures of optical true delay lines as examples,which are micro-ring resonant cavity array, grating ture time delay line, multi-path switchable optical ture time delay line(OTTDL), and wavelength selective optical delay line, their performance in delay accuracy, adjustable delay range, and frequency bandwidth are compared. Finally, the current problems and future development trends of optical controlled beamforming technology were summarized.

Yet, ultrasound spatial resolution remains limited by wave physics and coronaries smaller than ∼100 µm could not be imaged. Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (ULM) [2] was recently introduced to tackle this issue and exploit the micrometric localization of microbubble contrast agents at ultrafast frame rate in order to image blood flows in micrometer vessels. Purpose The objective of this work was to demonstrate that 3D ultrafast ultrasound with contrast agents can provide the full 3D mapping of the coronary microcirculation with quantitative flow velocity on a beating rat heart. Methods Acquisitions were performed on ex vivo rat hearts (n = 5) with retrograde perfusion (Langendorff model). A flow of a Krebs–Henseleit solution mixed with a diluted microbubbles solution (0.22%) was perfused at controlled pressure into the coronary arteries (between 5 and 15 mL/min). We used a 32 × 32 elements, 8-MHz matrix-array ultrasound transducer connected to a 1024-channel programmable ultrasound scanner. An ultrafast Doppler imaging sequence consisting of 9 plane waves was transmitted at a PRF of 20 kHz during 270 ms and repeated 40 times. After beamforming and SVD clutter filtering, the microbubbles were localized and tracked in 3D. Flow velocity were mapped at baseline and after infusion of Adenosine (10e-5 µMol) at constant coronary perfusion pressure (120 mm Hg). Eventually, the hearts were fixed using formaldehyde perfusion and imaged by µCT after injection of radio opaque agent. Results We successfully imaged the coronary blood flows of entire rat hearts. It revealed the entire vasculature from large main coronaries arteries (cross section up to 1 mm) to small arterioles (smaller than 40 µm). Coronary flow velocities ranged from [1 – 50] cm/s depending on the arteries diameter. Velocity estimates were validated in vitro in tubes of Ø0.58mm and were in good agreement with theoretical values of a Poiseuille’s flow (relative ratio of 10% for maximum velocities). After Adenosine infusion, perfusion flow rates increased 102% ± 50% (p < 0.05) on average. Eventually, anatomy revealed by 3D ultrasound coronarography was in accordance with the anatomy revealed by the µCT. Conclusion(s) We demonstrated the feasibility of 3D ultrasound coronarography on isolated beating rat hearts. This technique has the potential to become a novel imaging tool to investigate the coronary micro-circulation and quantify non-invasively the Coronary Flow Reserve (CFR). Abstract Figure. Monitoring the seismicity induced by fluid injections in deep geothermal reservoirs is often limited by the significant anthropogenic ambient noise level inherent to most EGS projects in urban contexts. We report on the performance of a monitoring network made of three small aperture (72 m) seismic arrays composed of 21 3D nodes. We tested the setup for four months (from 12 December 2020 to 8 April 2021) of the Strasbourg sequence of induced earthquakes (2019–2022) related to the EGS Georhin project (Vendenheim, France). The deployment started a few days after the MLv = 3.6 induced earthquake of 4 December 2020 and covered the early shut-in period of the wells. We use a beamforming technique to characterize the main noise sources, which consist of slow apparent velocities of surface waves emitted from mobile anthropogenic sources (motorway and railway traffic). We detect events with a phase-weighted stacking method, which is efficient when wavefronts illuminate the arrays with a high apparent velocity. Earthquakes associated with these detections are located using a matched field processing technique. The obtained catalog includes 216 seismic events, which represent four times more events than the reference catalog from the BCSF-Renass (the national academic agency in charge of seismicity monitoring in France), and a reduction of the completeness magnitude from 0.3 to −0.5. The clustering of the seismicity is analyzed using waveform correlation. The enriched catalog reveals intermittent seismic activity during the slow and continuous decrease in fluid pressure after shut-in.
