In diesem Jahr 1992 wird an zahlreichen Kongressen und Tagungen des 400. Todestages von Michel de Montaigne gedacht (1533—1592). Ich komme der Aufforderung des Redaktors des Gesnerus gerne nach, einen Beitrag zu diesem Zentenarium, zu liefern. Als Anthropologe gehört Montaigne zweifelsohne auch zur Geschichte der Medizin. In der vorliegenden Abhandlung wird der Perigourdiner Michel de Montaigne in einzelnen seiner Auffassungen und Äusserungen dem aus Einsiedeln gebürtigen Paracelsus (Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, ca. 1493— 1541) gegenübergestellt. Beide waren sich einig in der Kritik, die sie, jeder auf seine Art, an der Medizin ihrer Zeit ausübten. Montaigne hat mehrmals Paracelsus erwähnt. Beide sind heute noch modern; beide erleben in unserer Epoche eine Renaissance.

An essay is a piece of writing that methodically analyses and evaluates a topic or issue. Fundamentally, an essay is designed to get your academic opinion on a particular matter. The word essay derives from the French infinitive essayer, "to try" or "to attempt". In English essay first meant "a trial" or "an attempt", and this is still an alternative meaning. The Frenchman Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) was the first author to describe his work as essays; he used the term to characterize these as "attempts" to put his thoughts into writing, and his essays grew out of his commonplacing.

¿Por qué reseñar en español un libro publicado en catalán? ¿Acaso no existen más introducciones a la obra de Montaigne? Ciertamente sí, de hecho, puede decirse que los Ensayos del escritor renacentista Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) han tenido un eco amplio y duradero en el curso del tiempo. Pues, este autor no sólo inauguró con su obra el género ensayístico contemporáneo, sino que escribir sobre Montaigne y su libro (único si no tuviésemos en cuenta el Diario del viaje a Italia) constituye en nuestros días un género en sí mismo, que mientras haya papel y tinta suficiente en el mundo no parece que vaya a dejar de crecer.

Desde el Cours du Collège de France (1975 /1976) de Michel Foucault, titulado Il faut defender la societé (la 1ª edición en español, lo tituló: Genealogía del racismo: de la guerra de razas al racismo de Estado, sin justificación o base editorial e institucional alguna) se hace un análisis del poder (fuerza y ley) en el vacío o violencia estructural que existe hasta la consolidación de la teoría o doctrina jurídica—política de la soberanía de los contractualistas, especialmente Thomas Hobbes. Se aportan tres ejemplos: dos muestras, guerra de los campesinos alemanes de 1525 y guerra civil en Inglaterra que termina en 1650. Todo ello, tercer elemento, examinado a partir del concepto de justicia, que tiene un escéptico, Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592), y sus reflexiones religiosas y civiles que asolaron Francia durante todo el siglo XVI. Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) contended that "Nature has committed herself not to make any other thing that was not different." On this assumption, the diversity and variability of sexuality instantiates the principle of Nature’s continuous branloire and gives the lie to the regnant scheme of binary sexual distribution. As a result of Montaigne’s Heraclitean approach of reality, the hypostatized categories of man and woman subtending the sexual bipartition of humanity become the internalized poles of the male/female opposition that configure the uniquely nuanced sexuality of the individual. Against this backdrop, Montaigne’s love of Étienne de la Boétie (1530-1563) emerges as the supersedure of the age-old distinction between same-sex and other-sex configurations. Signally, womanizing Montaigne gave a tense response to the question as to why he loved La Boétie: "Because it was he."

Neste artigo, buscaremos aproximar dois autores distanciados por quatro séculos: Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) e Karl Popper (1902-1994). O primeiro procede em consonância com a adaptação pirrônica às tradições e costumes sociais aliada a uma defesa adogmática do catolicismo tradicional. O segundo procede pela defesa adogmática dos ideais do cristianismo primitivo enquanto molas propulsoras da tradição liberal-democrática. Para tanto, iniciaremos com uma exposição do fideísmo de Montaigne e da referida adaptação pirrônica. Em seguida, exporemos o modo de Popper lidar com a tradição, colocando-a como principal vetor da ordem social. Ademais, mostraremos como a tradição cristã influenciou o seu pensamento a ponto de o filósofo concebê-la como um dos principais ingredientes da sociedade aberta. Concluímos ressaltando que, apesar das diferenças entre os dois autores, ambos estão unidos tanto na crítica das pretensões cognitivas humanas quanto na consideração das tradições como um fator de estabilidade social.

A filosofia de Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) oferece a possibilidade de uma pedagogia pautada no ceticismo intelectual e no estoicismo moral, pois, segundo ele, sendo impossível a aquisição do conhecimento definitivo ou inquestionável, restaria apenas a busca incessante por algo que seja, ao menos, um pouco mais confiável ou provável, da mesma forma que seria imperativo educar o indivíduo para uma conduta virtuosa e implacável no cumprimento do dever. O objetivo deste artigo, justificado pela necessidade de aproximar a filosofia e a educação, é esboçar os tópicos principais do pensamento de Montaigne, para apresentar um panorama geral da sua filosofia, assim como das suas ideias sobre educação, tratando-se do contexto histórico ao qual pertence (Renascimento), assim como da sua obra magna (Ensaios). Como resultado, demonstra-se que o cepticismo intelectual e o estoicismo moral de Montaigne permanecem como alertas contra possíveis enganos, equívocos, erros ou ilusões causados por concepções que não fazem questionar até que ponto o saber é confiável, do mesmo modo que fazem ignorar a importância da formação da conduta humana. Espera-se que estas considerações acerca das ideias filosóficas e educacionais de Montaigne possam suscitar reflexões sobre a fundamentação teórica da educação.

Eine außergewöhnliche, fingierte Verwandtschaftsrelation bestand zwischen der späteren Herausgeberin sowie Schriftstellerin Marie de Gournay (1565-1645) und dem Verfasser der Essais, Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592). 1588 trafen sich die junge Unbekannte und der arrivierte Renaissancedenker zum ersten Mal in Paris und schlossen einen Bund (alliance). Fortan nahmen sie auf einander Bezug als père d’alliance und fille d’alliance. Die lebensweltliche Tragweite dieser früh-neuzeitlichen Allianz zwischen dem „geistigen Ziehvater“ Montaigne und seiner „geistigen Ziehtochter“ Marie de Gournay ist nur schwerlich fassbar, handelte es sich doch weder um eine durch Blutsverwandtschaft legitimierte, noch um eine rechtlich beglaubigte Verwandtschaftsbeziehung. Eine komparative Lektüre der Essais und verschiedener, von Marie de Gournay verfasster Texte lässt allerdings den Schluss zu, dass eine Kontinuitätslinie zwischen fille d’alliance und père d‘alliance auf einer textuellen Ebene festzustellen ist: Das semantische Feld rund um die Metaphorik des textuell erzeugten, geistigen, „vererbten“ und letztlich „verwaisten“ Kindes findet sich sowohl intra- als auch intertextuell zwischen den Essais sowie von Marie de Gournay verfassten Texten aufgespannt. Die Gesamtwerke Montaignes und Marie de Gournays, Les Essais beziehungsweise Les Advis, werden textuell „vererbt“, indem sie metaphorisch als „geistige Kinder“ einem Vormund angetragen werden. Einzelne Passagen der untersuchten Texte und Paratexte fungieren somit als autoreferenzieller und metatextueller Aushandlungsort nicht nur der Konstitution, sondern auch der Überlieferung jener schutzbedürftigen geistigen „(Waisen)Kinder“ (orphelins). Unter Bezug auf affekttheoretische und praxeologische Ansätze wird das „textuelle Kind“ bei Marie de Gournay als affektive Transmissionspraxis beleuchtet.

Nesse nterim, o objetivo deste artigo, que se justifica na necessidade de aproximar a filosofia e a educao, demonstrar a aplicabilidade do pensamento filosfico de Montaigne reflexo educacional, oferecendo, para isso, uma viso panormica do contexto histrico ao qual pertence, isto , o Renascimento, assim como da sua obra magna (Ensaios), dela extraindo elementos para a compreenso da sua filosofia em geral e, em particular, da contribuio de suas reflexes para uma fundamentao filosfica da educao, sob perspectiva ctica e estoica. Como resultado, apresenta-se que o cepticismo intelectual e o estoicismo moral de Montaigne permanecem como alertas contra possveis enganos, erros, iluses ou equvocos causados por concepes que no fazem questionar at que ponto o saber confivel, do mesmo modo que fazem ignorar a importncia da formao da conduta humana. Espera-se que estas consideraes no tocante s ideias filosficas e educacionais de Montaigne, vinculadas ao seu contexto histrico, possam suscitar reflexes sobre a problemtica da fundamentao terica da educao, em prol de uma prtica pedaggica que usufrua das contribuies tericas oferecidas pela filosofia.

O trabalho apresenta o que pode ser o papel do ceticismo para o direito no pensamento de Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592). Em primeiro lugar, discute a justiça através de uma atitude solipsista. Em seguida, identifica como pode ser configurado o direito a partir do ceticismo pirrônico do ensaísta. Argumenta-se que o ceticismo aparece como diagnóstico e como instrumento de intervenção pela justiça. Ao final do trabalho, apontamos o direito montaigniano como um instrumento de imperfeição contínua, desarticulada de qualquer base dogmática.

Sin duda, Los ensayos del pensador perigordino son conocidos por el lector culto. De hecho, a menudo se dice que su obra ha dado pie a un género nuevo, a una manera de escribir y, quizá, a un modo de pensar, que todavía nos es cercano.

Michel de Montaigne (1533 – 1592) foi um ilustre filósofo francês do período da Renascença. Portanto, viveu em um mundo em transição, rumando na direção do que convencionalmente passou a ser chamado de Modernidade. O momento histórico no qual está inserida sua biografia caracteriza-se por conflitos e perturbações sociais e políticas, bem como por descoberta de um novo mundo e avanços no conhecimento, reflexo de uma busca por desenraizamento de uma tradição medieval e pela construção de uma nova mentalidade pautada pela autonomia em relação aos ditames escolásticos. Montaigne herdou esse ímpeto e propôs uma filosofia humanista da qual deriva uma proposta educativa. Fizemos o presente artigo com o intuito de colher diretrizes para o ensino de filosofia no Ensino Médio. Inicialmente partimos do estudo do texto Montaigne: filosofia e educação para a vida, do professor Márcio Silveira Lemgruber. Posteriomente, aprofundamos a interpretação com o texto contido nos Ensaios, A educação da criança, reforçado com textos de outros autores como Cambi (1999) e Morandi (2002).

On his way to Rome, Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) made a one-day visit to the city of Vitry-le-François on September 10, 1580. There, he met a female-born man whose male sexual organs had been generated as the erstwhile young girl had been making large strides. The narrative of the event in Montaigne’s Essais reflects his interest in the complexities of sexual difference and his critical approach of the regnant scheme of sexual binarity. The present contribution highlights Montaigne’s attentiveness to sexual configurations at variance with the male/female template that subtends the normative views upheld by the ecclesiastical and civil authorities of the French sixteenth century. Not being an outspoken advocate of contrarian sexual takes, Montaigne sufficed himself with pointing to the existence of mythological, anthropological and historical accounts implying the categorial inadequateness of subsuming individuals under one of two mutually exclusive sexes. What appears at first to be merely illustrations of anormative sexual forms, is actually meant to open the way toward the validation, within the ambit of sexuality, of Montaigne’s foremost ontic principle: "Nature has committed herself not to make any other thing that was not different." On this assumption, Montaigne eventually hints in his comprehensive essay "On some verses of Virgil "at a template of sexual differentiation that dispenses with the prevalent (albeit thoughtless) scheme of dichotomous sexuality. Despite introducing a self-deprecative tone to dissipate possible accusations of propounding an un-Christian stance on sexual matters, the brief passage at stake envisages surrendering the immemorial fixity of sexual compartmentations to the limitless sexual variability that occurs in Nature, thereby setting the theoretical stage for his writerly aspiration to portray himself "tout nud" in a world free of taxonomic closures.

Abstract Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592), author of the Essays (published in successive, revised and expanded editions from 1580 until after his death), deserves to be recognized as the first) philosophic architect of modern liberalism, that is, a doctrine that advocates the advancement of individual liberty (under law), and consequently a reduction in the scope and purpose of government to securing what are represented by Montaigne’s successors (Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, and the American Founders) as people’s inherent rights to their life, liberty, property, and the “pursuit of happiness” as they conceive it. His outward, periodic professions of extreme conservatism and of homage to the Catholic Church are merely a rhetorical cover designed to protect the author from being persecuted (and his book from being banned). As a practitioner of what he describes as esoteric rhetoric (attributing it to the ancient political philosophers), Montaigne invites careful readers to see through his rhetorical concealment by noting how his conservative professions are undermined by the overall train of his reasoning and argument. Although Montaigne’s argument for liberal individualism may have gone too far in its influence over the long run (that is, the 21st century), we citizens of modern liberal regimes owe him a debt of gratitude for helping to liberate us from the reign of arbitrary monarchs, oppressive aristocrats, and clerical oppressors.
