Howells, Coral Ann. Major Authors: Robertson Davies, Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199679775.003.0024.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the works of three Canadian novelists best known internationally: Robertson Davies, Margaret Atwood, and Michael Ondaatje. The careers of Davies, Atwood, and Ondaatje, although overlapping chronologically, represent distinctive stages in Canada's evolving cultural traditions and publishing practices since the 1950s. Davies's novels signal the first stage in a transition from colonial to postcolonial identity in post-war Canada. Atwood in the 1970s provided the script for a Canadian cultural and literary identity separate from British and American in what Carol Shields called ‘a period of explosive patriotism’. Ondaatje's novels and family memoir epitomize the ‘refocusing and defocusing’ of Canadian literature since the 1980s, coinciding with the nation's shifts into multiculturalism and transnationalism. The chapter first provides a background on Davies, Atwood, and Ondaatje's careers before considering some of their works, including the Deptford trilogy (Davies), The Handmaid's Tale (Atwood), and The English Patient (Ondaatje).

Abstract:
Klein, Scott W., and Michael Valdez Moses, eds. A Modernist Cinema. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199379453.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In A Modernist Cinema, edited by Scott W. Klein and Michael Valdez Moses, sixteen distinguished scholars in the field of the New Modernist Studies explore the interrelationships among modernism, cinema, and modernity. Focusing on several culturally influential films from Europe, America, and Asia produced between 1914 and 1941, this collection of essays contends that cinema was always a modernist enterprise. Examining the dialectical relationship between a modernist cinema and modernity itself, these essays reveal how the movies represented and altered our notions and practices of modern life, as well as how the so-called crises of modernity shaped the evolution of filmmaking. Attending to the technical achievements and formal qualities of the works of several prominent directors—Giovanni Pastrone, D. W. Griffith, Sergei Eisenstein, Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock, F. W. Murnau, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Dziga Vertov, Luis Buñuel, Yasujiro Ozu, John Ford, Jean Renoir, Charlie Chaplin, Leni Riefenstahl, and Orson Welles—these essays investigate several interrelated topics: how a modernist cinema represented and intervened in the political and social struggles of the era; the ambivalent relationship between cinema and the other modernist arts; the controversial interconnection between modern technology and the new art; the significance of representing the mobile human body in a new medium; the gendered history of modernity; and the transformative effects of cinema on modern conceptions of temporality, spatial relations, and political geography. The contributors are Richard Begam, Maurizia Bascagli, Enda Duffy, Laura Frost, Andrzej Gąsiorek, Scott W. Klein, Douglas Mao, Laura Marcus, Jesse Matz, Tyrus Miller, Michael Valdez Moses, Michael North, Elizabeth Otto, Carrie J. Preston, Lisa Siraganian, and Michael Wood.

Abstract:
Roads, bridges, aqueducts and canals are amongst the physical infrastructures that allowed Roman dominance over the Empire, while meeting economic, social and strategic needs. Due to their structural role in the management and control of a territory, they must be examined in view of the “longue durée”, which necessarily raises the issue of their regular maintenance and occasional restoration. By studying the interactions between different political and administrative authorities, but also the involvement of private individuals, be they users or riverside occupants, the papers gathered in this volume highlight the rehabilitation procedures of road and hydraulic facilities, but also the prevention strategies against potentially irreversible damages. To understand the overall legal framework, along with the technical constraints and socio-political modalities of these interventions, a multidisciplinary approach was adopted to foster the dialogue between history, archaeology and Roman law.
