Abstract:
While Raphael’s guidance of Adam has provoked much discussion, his origin in the Apocrypha, which Milton in Christian Doctrine derided as “fabulous, low, trifling, and quite foreign to real sagacity and religion,” deserves more attention. This article argues that his origin in Tobit, considered canonical by Catholics, is only the beginning of his Catholic identity. Through the “divine” Raphael, who encourages in Adam an exaggerated confidence in his own nature, Milton critiques another charming, philosophical, Catholic storyteller whose teachings are grounded in the analogia entis, the author of The Divine Comedy. Milton imitates Dante’s practice of making the epic predecessor a character—Raphael guides Adam as Virgil had the Pilgrim—to critique Dante’s poetic presumption and deficient understanding of sin. Michael, the angel from the Protestant Bible whose teaching hews closely to Scripture, with his emphasis on sin and obedience then provides a model for the Protestant poet.

Abstract:
In this article, Michael Ullyot explores the possible implications for literary reading of a vast textual database of sonnets. Ullyot argues that a growing library of texts and tools will help us to read the sonnet in less linear and more “scalable” ways. Although not fully developed yet, Ullyot’s prototype already has produced useful results by focusing on Milton’s admittedly small corpus of English sonnets. Ullyot suggests that if textual analysis techniques can confirm critical insights about Milton’s sonnets, then more confidence can be placed in these tools and techniques when, later, they are scaled up to larger bodies of texts. While displaying a healthy pragmatic realism about the challenges ahead, Ullyot’s article tantalizingly suggests the scholarly advantages of building the world’s largest sonnet anthology.

Don Patinkin (1922-95) was a co-author of the Keynesian neoclassical synthesis, and became engaged in several important controversies. One of them involved Milton Friedman's (1956) assertion about a supposed Chicago quantity theory “oral tradition.” From 1968 until his death, Patinkin hardly seemed to miss an opportunity of denigrating what he regarded as Friedman's “invention.” This controversy was taken to the 1970 American Economic Association (AEA) meeting by Harry Johnson (1971), and divided at least two economics departments, Chicago and the University of Western Ontario, where Patinkin and Johnson were frequent visitors, and where two influential monetarists, David Laidler and Michael Parkin, had migrated from Britain (Parkin, 1986; Patinkin, 1986).

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the novel argument that John Milton’s Paradise Lost shows clear evidence of Gnostic influence. While the potential influence of gnostic concepts on Milton has been noted before, previous work has been partial, suggestive, and/or limited to other of Milton’s works. Here, we build on the case made by Michael Bryson regarding Milton’s Paradise Regained by providing our own reading of four core themes in the prior Paradise Lost through a gnostic lens: (1) the manner of creation through the Son, (2) Milton’s understanding of materialism, (3) the Son’s attitude orientation toward outward displays of power, and (4) the parallels between Milton’s Eve and the gnostic Sophia. We ground this argument around Milton’s Gnosticism by presenting the historical case that Milton had access to, and was likely persuaded by, key aspects of ancient Gnosticism found within both Christian heresiologists (e.g., Irenaeus, Tertullian) and Neoplatonism (Plotinus). We then survey our core themes of Paradise Lost, presenting evidence around where ancient Gnosticism – in concert with other, often overlapping influences such as Neoplatonism and parabiblical literature – seems to provide the best framework for understanding certain, distinct elements of Milton’s conceptual and poetic frameworks.

Abstract:
In the two novels, from a simple commotion of tenants in a Paris block of flats, come to light aspects much more mysterious than those expected from a simple realist story. Zola and Butor nurture their text on a strong touch of imagination and symbolism. We started from an analysis of two stories describing first the complicated network of established links in this Paris house. So, it’s a matter of social portrait of problematical relationships between characters in each book. Psychological analysis leads us to an analysis of the places, to a space and time study and to the influence of their interaction on characters from the block of flats. After, we surpass this spatiotemporal equation to have a look purely mythical at the two stories. Analysing mythical dimension hidden in these two stories, we draw, from ambivalents pictures, indeed conflicting, an hymn song by the two authors to vital equilibrium, universal harmony and human plenitude

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with the work of Michal Viewegh from the point of view of functional and value division of literary production. It tries to prove that bipolar model, established in Czech environment, in his case does not work, since it cannot be assigned not only to highbrow literature, nor to popular literature, because the work of Viewegh is in comparison with them too sophisticated. Therefore the author proposes to revive forgotten trichotomic model of literary classification and use it for situation Viewegh's work. The author, contrary to literary criticism, is of the opinion that every single Viewegh's novel does not substantially differentiate from each other. The author supports this argument using comparative analysis of positively and negatively evaluated novels, resulting into finding that both groups despite of differences in critical assessment contain the same constitutive characteristics that are typical for midcult. This conclusion is further investigated by comparison of selected Viewegh's works with prose works of typical writers, typically low (Lanczová) and high (Kundera) literary level, through their work with love theme. Result confirms the rightness of situation of Viewegh's literary prose into the midcult: Viewegh handles love's theme in a more sophisticated and...

Abstract:
Diploma thesis "I become speech." Death and Return of the Author in the Perspective of Philosophy of Identity focuses on the question of inclusion of the author into the interpretation of literary text and aims to highlight the fruitfulness of such inclusion as well as some of its dangers. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part the author of the thesis presents a polemic account of some antiauthorial approaches, especially the "death of the author" as appearing in the texts of R. Barthes, M. Foucault and Jacques Derrida, along with a short mention of antiintentionalism of W. K Wimsatt and M. C. Beardsley and a theory of the model author by U. Eco. The common feature of the aforementioned antiauthorial theories is a reductive idea of the author and his relation to text - the problematic aspects of authorial interpretation, which their texts wish to make evident, is then only a consequence of the problematic underlying notion of the author-subject. The second part of the thesis intends to present an alternative theoretical understanding of the "real author" using the philosophy of identity od J. Butler and P. Bourdieu. These authors are proposing a theory of a person who is not understood as a "real thing" that would be available for a complete delimitation, description and...

Abstract:
Texts and Readers in the Age of Marvell offers fresh perspectives from leading and emerging scholars of seventeenth-century British literature, focusing on the surprising ways that texts interacted with writers and readers at precise cultural moments. With particular interest in how texts entered the seventeenth-century public world, some of these essays emphasise the variety of motivations – from generic distaste to personal frustration – that explain how ideology and form fuse together in various works. Others offer fine-grained and multi-sided contextualisations of familiar texts and cruxes. With an eye to the elusive and complicated Andrew Marvell as tutelary figure of the age, the contributors provide novel readings of a range of seventeenth-century authors, often foregrounding the complexities these writers faced as the remarkable events of the century moved swiftly around them. The essays make important contributions, both methodological and critical, to the field of early modern studies and include examinations of prominent seventeenth-century figures such as John Milton, Andrew Marvell, John Dryden, and Edmund Waller. New work appears here by Nigel Smith and Michael McKeon on Marvell, Michael Schoenfeldt on new formalism, Derek Hirst on child abuse in the seventeenth century, and Joad Raymond on print politics. Because of their relevance to contemporary critical debates, the studies here will be of interest to postgraduate students and scholars working on seventeenth-century British literature, culture, and history.

Abstract:
The chapter explores the distinction between pseudo and real knowledge. Several episodes in which knowledge is being conveyed in Paradise Lost are discussed (Adam’s exchange with Raphael, Eve’s temptation by Satan, and Adam’s instruction by Michael). Milton’s challenge is not only to distinguish benign from malign forms of knowledge-seeking, but to convincingly communicate what prefallen knowledge involves, and to achieve this as a fallen mind writing for other fallen minds. The notion of hosting is introduced: in (some) real knowledge, one hosts a higher element. One’s knowledge-seeking ought not to devolve into mere curiosity, but should be driven by a hope to bond further with God. A distinction between Adam and Eve’s folly is proposed. Finally, the poem’s view of postlapsarian wisdom is presented.

AbstractIn this chapter, Raphael Heiberger and Michael Windzio examine which topics are important for major education international organization (IOs). IOs in the field of education follow different ideological paradigms in the global education discourse. Yet, it is an open question as to whether different types of IOs focus on different topics and thereby support different paradigms of education. Based on more than 1000 documents with over 40 million words published by the World Bank, UNESCO, the ILO, the OECD, ISESCO, and SEAMEO, they explore education issues addressed in this sample. Using standardized methods of quantitative text analysis and topic modeling, Heiberger and Windzio reveal that major topics found in these documents do indeed differ between the different types of organizations.

Abstract:
Examines the euphrasy and rue which Michael applies to Adam’s eyes in book 11 of Paradise Lost, which have been variously glossed by editors of the poem. In medieval and early modern herbals euphrasy was associated with joy or cheerfulness in contrast to rue’s association with sorrow, reinforcing the poem’s “ethical message of tempering joy with sorrow,” which “accords with other exhortations toward moderation” in Paradise Lost. Euphrasy was also, thanks to false etymology, associated with pleasing eloquence and poetry, allowing Milton an occasion for wordplay. Noting that Adam “does not always judge or interpret the visions [shown to him in books 11 and 12] correctly,” Stelzer suggests that “the remedy Michael administers in book 11 is temporary and imperfect, albeit extraordinary.”

Abstract:
The introductory chapter elaborates definitions of two opposed but entangled poetic tendencies, calling one mortalist and the other spiritualist. It draws extended examples from John Milton (particularly from Paradise Lost [1667] and De Doctrina Christiana); from Edward Young (especially from Night Thoughts [1742–6], identified as the poem central to the study); and from several late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century Anglophone poets, including Lucie Brock-Broido, Michael Symmons Roberts, Danez Smith, Tracy K. Smith, and Kevin Young. Some of these writers, the chapter argues, surprisingly keep alive a poetics of disembodiment derived from the Enlightenment. The introduction ends with a discussion of some relevant questions in literary criticism (concerning materialism, Pre-Romanticism, historical poetics, and lyric studies) and then a personal word about the author’s perspective on the spiritualities explored in the book.

Abstract:
Curtiz arrived in New York City via the ocean liner Leviathan on June 10, 1926; the story that his ship docked on July 4 and he thought the holiday fireworks were a celebration of his American arrival was a PR fiction that would be repeated for decades by Warner, Hal Wallis, and Curtiz. Curtiz arrived in Hollywood with his treatment of Noah’s Ark, but instead Jack Warner assigned him a crime drama, The Third Degree (1926), based on a 1908 stage play. He scrambled to learn about American criminal procedures by spending time in the L.A. County Jail and having the script translated into Hungarian. He added a great deal of unscripted material to the picture, a harbinger of future strife between him and the studio. As he completed more pictures for Warner Bros., including A Million Bid and The Desired Woman, he began his long association with Darryl F. Zanuck. He also met the screenwriter Bess Meredyth, who would become his second wife. His immigration status proved to be a problem, as it had to be extended each year by Warner Bros. until he could become a legal resident.

Abstract:
Curtiz’s career is summarized during the pre-Code era of Hollywood films. The evolution of the Production Code from the 1922 appointment of Will Hays as the czar of the MPPDA to the lack of enforcement of the Code is contextually chronicled as a key driver of the nature of Warner Bros. pictures during the early years of the Depression. Zanuck pioneered the “ripped from the headlines” gangster dramas that struck a chord with audiences. After he directed The Mad Genius, with John Barrymore, Curtiz’s pay was cut as Warners lost $8 million in 1931.Following The Woman from Monte Carlo and the visually creative Alias the Doctor, Curtiz was assigned the contemporary Strange Love of Molly Louvain, starring Ann Dvorak. He hit box-office gold with Doctor X (1932), a gruesome pre-Code horror film starring Fay Wray, who recounted Curtiz’s cold, sometimes cruel behavior on the set. Curtiz’s production of The Cabin in the Cotton included his racial faux pas and his alienation of Bette Davis during their first film together. His masterly direction of 20,000 Years in Sing Sing concluded a year of worsening economic conditions for the country.

Abstract:
Housing affordability is an ever-growing concern in rapidly urbanizing countries like India. The need for affordable housing can hardly be overemphasis in India. Government has many policies and programs running for fulfilling the requirement. But it is essential to define affordability standards for the success of any such policies and programs. The Ratio Method, which is currently used as the base for determining affordable housing, doesn’t have the flexibility to match the varied scale and standards across Indian cities. This paper is based on Michel E stone’s residual income’ method to measure housing affordability for India’s million-plus city. It gives a new approach for measuring housing affordability based on the minimum living cost for survival. It uses Poverty Line data (2014) and NSSO economic survey data (2012) for defining the minimum standard of living in the city. Stakeholders can use the city-specific measurement for affordable housing generated from this paper in affordable housing policies and programs.

Abstract:
The implementation, support, and ultimate success of digitally-informed innovations to teaching and learning practices requires focused intentionality whose approach is grounded in academic rigour, practical experience and organizational maturity. The success of technology-supported innovation in higher-education teaching and learning practices, driven by external factors like COVID and the resultant economic challenges, will be explored in relation to teaching faculty and administrative leaders developing and maintaining positive motivation towards change including addressing major organizational challenges. // Innovation, Change and Transformation // As Senior Instructor Emeritus, Ron Murch has more than 45 years of experience with the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. Ron maintains that digital transformation requires faculty members to adopt the requisite innovations in practice and technologies as imagined by the Technology Acceptance Model and expanded upon by two key principles - each new practice or technology must have recognizable and positive value for the individual who is changing; and it cannot be too difficult for the adopter to work with. // Guiding Principles // Dr. Peter Chatterton is a Chartered Physicist and digital innovator. He worked in roles such as critical friend, evaluator and change management consultant with the UK Government’s multi-million £s HEI digital innovation and transformation programmes during 2000-2020. From this experience, Peter asserts that HEIs can be both creative and effective at digital innovation. However, scaling-up and embedding such innovations to build long-term resilience and effect digital transformation across the institution invariably faces numerous challenges. These are explored through the lens of seven key guiding principles for digitally transforming learning programmes for open and flexible learning. // Commitment and Motivation // Michael Barr is Chief Information Officer at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta, and a doctoral student in higher education management at the University of Bath, UK. Building on a theory of behavior in organizations, Michael explores the motivation process and its impact on the construction of strategic plans and the organization’s ability to deliver successful outcomes. He draws upon 28 years’ of IT practitioner experience to ground his scholarly work with practical advice and considerations for undertaking digital transformation of teaching and learning practices.
