Abstract:
Abstract The traditional methods of measuring viscosity with rotational viscometers, i.e. cone-plate and concentric cylinder systems, are often not suitable for suspensions. To be able to measure viscosity on suspensions mixer viscometers have been developed. In this study a new design of a helical ribbon impeller has been evaluated and the Metzner-Otto approach has been used to calibrate the impeller. Different kinds of food products were studied. The Metzner-Otto parameter obtained from tomato products was lower than those obtained from starch products. The study showed that the Metzner-Otto parameter varied but seemed rather to be dependent on the composition of the food material than on the flow behaviour index. The impeller could handle high concentration of quite large particles. This type of helical ribbon impeller viscometer is thus recommended for rheological studies of suspensions with high concentration of particles.

Abstract:
In this work, the power draw and shear profile of a novel in-line rotor-stator mixer were studied experimentally and the laminar flow regime was simulated. The power draw of the rotor-stator mixer was investigated experimentally using viscoplastic shear-thinning fluid and the results of the obtained power consumptions were verified through simulations. The power draw constant and Otto-Metzner coefficient were determined from the result of experimental data and through simulations. A new method is suggested for the determination of the Otto-Metzner coefficient for the Herschel–Bulkley model and the term efficiency is introduced. It was shown that the proposed method can be applied successfully for the prediction of the Otto-Metzner coefficient for the mixing of viscoplastic shear-thinning fluids. The effect of geometry and rotor speed on power consumption and shear rate profile in the investigated mixer is discussed from the results of the simulations. It was found that numerical methods are a convenient tool and can predict the power draw of the in-line rotor-stator mixer successfully.

Abstract:
Viscoelastic fluids can be difficult to model due to the wide range of different physical behaviors that polymer melts can exhibit. One such feature is the viscous elastic boundary layer. We address the particular problem of a viscoelastic shear-dependent fluid flowing past a corner and investigate how the properties of the boundary layer change for a White-Metzner fluid. The boundary layer equations are derived and the upstream layer is matched with the far-field flow. It was found that if the fluid is sufficiently shear thinning then the viscoelastic boundary layer formulation fails due to the inertial forces becoming dominant. The depth of the boundary layer is controlled by the shear-thinning parameters. These effects are not a feature of other shear-thinning models, such as the Phan-Thien-Tanner model. This study provides insight in the different effects of some commonly used viscoelastic models in corner flows in the upstream boundary layer, the downstream boundary layer is not addressed.

Abstract:
We show that the asymptotic infinite dimensional enlarged gauge symmetries constructed for QED are anomalous in Weyl semimetals. This symmetry is particularly important in particle physics for its analogy with the Bondi–Metzner–Sachs (BMS) symmetries in gravity, as well as for its connection with QED soft IR theorems. This leads to observable effects, because of the induction of a new current in the material, which carries a memory of the BMS symmetry precursor.

Abstract:
Abstract The phenomenon of hole pressure occurs whenever a polymeric or viscoelastic liquid flows over a depression in a conduit wall. Numerical simulations undertaken for the flow of an aqueous polyacrylamide melt passing over a transverse slot arc considered here. The fluid model used for this study is a White-Metzner constitutive equation describing the non-Newtonian behavior of the melt. The results were computed by an elastic-viscous split-stress finite clement method (EVSS-FEM). a mixed finite clement method incorporating the non-consistent streamline upwind scheme. For verification, the numerical algorithm was first applied to compute the corresponding flow of the upper-convected Maxwell fluid model, a special case of the Whitc-Metzner model characterized by constant viscosity and relation time. The resulting hole pressure (Ph) was evaluated for various Deborah numbers (De) and compared with the analytical prediction derived from the Higashitani-Pritchard (HP) theory. The agreement was found to be satisfactory for creeping flow in the low De range, for which the HP theory is valid. Subsequently, the hole pressure of this flow problem was predicted. The streamlines and pressure distribution along the channel walls arc also presented. Furthermore, the effects of fluid elasticity, shear thinning, the exponent in the viscosity function and the relaxation-time function, and slot geometry on the hole pressure were investigated.

Abstract:
This work is a pedagogical review dedicated to a modern description of the Bondi–Metzner–Sachs (BMS) group. Minkowski space-time has an interesting and useful group of isometries, but, for a generic space-time, the isometry group is simply the identity and hence provides no significant informations. Yet symmetry groups have important role to play in physics; in particular, the Poincaré group describing the isometries of Minkowski space-time plays a role in the standard definitions of energy-momentum and angular-momentum. For this reason alone it would seem to be important to look for a generalization of the concept of isometry group that can apply in a useful way to suitable curved space-times. The curved space-times that will be taken into account are the ones that suitably approach, at infinity, Minkowski space-time. In particular we will focus on asymptotically flat space-times. In this work, the concept of asymptotic symmetry group of those space-times will be studied. In the first two sections we derive the asymptotic group following the classical approach which was basically developed by Bondi, van den Burg, Metzner and Sachs. This is essentially the group of transformations between coordinate systems of a certain type in asymptotically flat space-times. In the third section the conformal method and the notion of “asymptotic simplicity” are introduced, following mainly the works of Penrose. This section prepares us for another derivation of the BMS group which will involve the conformal structure, and is thus more geometrical and fundamental. In the subsequent sections we discuss the properties of the BMS group, e.g. its algebra and the possibility to obtain as its subgroup the Poincaré group, as we may expect. The paper ends with a review of the BMS invariance properties of classical gravitational scattering discovered by Strominger, that are finding application to black hole physics and quantum gravity in the literature.

Abstract:
The symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in four dimensions in the sense of Newman and Unti is revisited. As in the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs gauge, it is shown to be isomorphic to the direct sum of the abelian algebra of infinitesimal conformal rescalings with𝔟𝔪𝔰4. The latter algebra is the semidirect sum of infinitesimal supertranslations with the conformal Killing vectors of the Riemann sphere. Infinitesimal local conformal transformations can then consistently be included. We work out the local conformal properties of the relevant Newman-Penrose coefficients, construct the surface charges, and derive their algebra.

Eilicrinia cordiaria (Hübner, 1790) has been recorded in Croatia after an apparent absence of 36 years at six new localities. The species has a scattered distribution in the country, with historical records originating from both Mediterranean and Continental regions while recent reports are limited to northern Croatia, mostly around the rivers Drava and Mura. For Eilicrinia trinotata (Metzner, 1845) the first record from Croatia is presented, from Bansko hill in Baranja region. Both species can be considered as scarce in Croatia and further studies are needed in order to assess their status and distribution.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Records of 445 new psychology majors—and responses from 301 returned questionnaires—were used to ( a) test and extend a generic model for academic pathways to the undergraduate major and ( b) investigate feminization of the field. The model holds that a student's contact with basic college psychology courses is a crucial element leading to a decision to major in the field. Our data supported this formulation. Concerning feminization, 74% of the applicants were women. As groups, however, women and men were not reliably different on features such as school backgrounds, psychology course histories, self-reported influences on and certain reasons for the decision to major, or plans following graduation. Feminization was thus evident in numbers, not academic characteristics.
